Bulk compositions of igneous and microbreccia lithic fragments, glasses, and chondrules from Luna 16 fines as well as compositions of minerals in basaltic lithic fragments were determined with the electron microprobe. Igneous lithic fragments and glasses are divided into two groups, the anorthositic-noritic-troctolitic (hereafter referred to as ANT) and basaltic groups. Chondrules are always of ANT composition and microbreccia lithic fragments are divided into groups 1 and 2. The conclusions reached may be summarized as follows: (1) Luna 16 fines are more similar in composition to Apollo 11 than to Apollo 12 and 14 materials (e.g. Apollo 11 igneous lithic fragments and glasses fall into similar ANT and basaltic groups; abundant norites in Luna 16 and Apollo 11 are not KREEP as in Apollo 12 and 14; Luna 16 basaltic lithic fragments may represent high-K and low-K suites as is the case for Apollo 11; rare colorless to greenish, FeO-rich and TiO2-poor glasses were found in both Apollo 11 and Luna 16; Luna 16 spinels are similar to Apollo 11 spinels but unlike those from Apollo 12). (2) No difference was noted in the composition of lithic fragments, glasses and chondrules from Luna 16 core tube layers A and D. (3) Microbreccia lithic fragments of group 1 originated locally by mixing of high proportions of basaltic with small proportions of ANT materials. (4) Glasses are the compositional analogs to the lithic fragments and not to the microbreccias; most glasses were produced directly from igneous rocks. (5) Glasses show partial loss of Na and K due to vaporization in the vitrification process. (6) Luna 16 chondrules have ANT but not basaltic composition. It is suggested that either liquid droplets of ANT composition are more apt to nucleate from the supercooled state; or basaltic droplets have largely been formed in small and ANT droplets in large impact events (in the latter case, probability for homogeneous and inhomogeneous nucleation is larger. (7) No evidence for ferric iron and water-bearing minerals was found. (8) Occurrence of a great variety of igneous rocks in Luna 16 samples (anorthosite, noritic anorthosite, anorthositic norite, olivine norite, troctolite, and basalt) confirm our earlier conclusion that large-scale melting or partial melting to considerable depth and extensive igneous differentiation must have occurred on the moon.  相似文献

The isotopic composition and abundances of He, Ne and Ar have been measured in a sequence of vertically stacked gas reservoirs at Hajduszoboszlo and Ebes, in the Pannonian Basin of Hungary. The gas reservoirs occur at depths ranging from 727 to 1331 m, are CH4 dominated and occupy a total rock volume of approximately 1.5 km3. There are systematic variations in both major species abundances and rare gas isotopic composition with depth: CO2 and N2 both increase from 0.47 and 1.76% to 14.1 and 30.5%, respectively, and 40Ar/36Ar and 21Ne/22Ne increase systematically from 340 and 0.02990 at 727 m to 1680 and 0.04290 at 1331 m. A mantle-derived He component between 2 and 5% is present in all samples, the remainder is crustal-radiogenic He. The Ar and Ne isotope variations arise from mixing between atmosphere-derived components in groundwater, and crustally produced radiogenic Ar and Ne. The atmosphere-derived 40Ar and 21Ne decreases from 85 and 97% of the total 40Ar and 21Ne at 727 m to 18 and 68% at 1331 m. The deepest samples are shown to have both atmosphere-derived and radiogenic components close to the air-saturated water and radiogenic production ratios. The shallowest samples show significant fractionation of He/Ar and Ne/Ar ratios in atmosphere-derived and radiogenic rare gas components, but little or no fractionation of He/Ne ratios. This suggests that diffusive fractionation of rare gases is relatively unimportant and that rare gas solubility partitioning between CH4 and H2O phases controls the observed rare gas elemental abundances. The total abundance of atmosphere-derived and radiogenic rare gas components in the Hajduszoboszlo gas field place limits on the minimum volume of groundwater that has interacted with the natural gas, and the amount of crust that has degassed and supplied radiogenic rare gases. The radiogenic mass balance cannot be accounted for by steady state production either within the basin sediments or the basement complex since basin formation. The results require that radiogenic rare gases are stored at their production ratios on a regional scale and transported to the near surface with minimal fractionation. The minimum volume of groundwater required to supply the atmosphere-derived rare gases would occupy a rock volume of some 1000 km3 (assuming an average basin porosity of 5%), a factor of 670 greater than the reservoir volume. Interactions between groundwater and the Hajduszoboszlo hydrocarbons has been on a greater scale than often envisaged in models of hydrocarbon formation and migration.  相似文献

Sample 10071, 33 is a thin section of Apollo 11 ferrobasalt showing an unusual dual texture. The major portion of the sample is very similar to other fine grained Apollo 11 basalts, but the thin section also includes material with a distinct variolitic texture. The two areas are separated by a sharp boundary and the mineralogy and composition of the two textural types are quite distinct. The mineralogy and chemistry of the variolitic portion show it to be the product of rapid cooling of a liquid, intermediate between the typical Apollo 11 ferrobasalt and the associated Si and K-rich mesostasis. This liquid is the result of fractional crystallization of a magma of composition closely corresponding to the major portion of the 10071 system, followed by crystal-liquid separation. The sample provides strong and direct evidence for igneous differentiation on the lunar surface.  相似文献

The concentrations of the rare earth elements (REE), K, Rb, Sr, Ba, U, Zr and Cr for the Luna 20 soil and four different Apollo 16 soils are reported. These trace element abundances imply: (1) that the lunar highlands consist of a mixture of rocks rich in large ion lithophile (LIL) elements and LIL-element impoverished anorthosites; or (2) that the bulk of the aluminum-rich crust did not originate by upward segregation of plagioclase in a primitive liquid shell. The Luna 20 soil is distinguished from the Apollo 16 soil by lower aluminum and LIL element abundances.  相似文献

The depth profile of the neutron-induced fission rate of235U was directly measured to a depth of 350 g/cm2 by the Apollo 17 Lunar Neutron Probe Experiment. The fission rate rises sharply from the surface to a broad maximum from 110 to 160 g/cm2 and drops off at greater depths. The shape of theoretical depth profile of Lingenfelter et al. fits the measured capture rates well at all depths. The absolute magnitude of the experimental fission rates are (11±17)% lower than those calculated theoretically. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment implies that conclusions drawn previously by interpreting lunar sample data with the theoretical capture rates will not require revision. In particular lunar surface processes, rather than uncertainties in the capture rates, are required to explain the relatively low neutron fluences observed for surface soil samples compared to the fluences expected for a uniformly mixed regolith.  相似文献

Apollo 17 station 7 boulder consortia samples were analyzed for major and minor elements by a combined semimicro atomic absorption spectrophotometric and colorimetric procedure. Lithophile trace element abundances were determined by stable isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Three matrix types samples (77135, 77115, and 77075) were found to be KREEP-rich fragment-laden melts with analogues throughout the Apollo 17 landing site. Of the five clasts analyzed, at least one (77115,19, troctolite) is thought to be a cumulate; 77135, 77115, and 77075 are thought to have originated by impact fusion of material with similar composition. This original material may represent a partial melt of a parent material of the composition of an included, shocked norite breccia (77215).  相似文献

The vesicle size distribution (VSD) and rare gas abundances in popping rocks from 14°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge provide constraints on the behavior of volatiles during ridge crest volcanism. These popping rocks, which contain 16–18 volume percent vesicles, are rare mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) magmas which appear to have retained much of their volatile inventory. The logarithm of vesicle population density displays the same linear correlation with decreasing size in two of the samples studied. This implies that continuous and simultaneous nucleation and bubble growth have occurred during magma ascent, with no significant perturbations due to accumulation, coalescence or loss of bubbles. In contrast, most MORB magmas display low vesicularities and we suggest that they have suffered some degree of pre-eruptive vesicle loss. We tentatively propose that large vesicles are produced by coalescence when MORB melt is at rest in chambers and conduits, and may be lost during early gas-rich episodes. Most MORB would represent residual liquids which erupt after vesicle loss has occurred, whereas popping rocks would represent a rare case where physical sorting of vesicles from melt did not occur, because storage in a magma chamber did not occur. The rare gas concentrations in the studied popping rocks are the highest yet measured in glassy ridge basalts ([He] > 50 μccSTP/g). The rare gas abundance pattern of these popping rocks probably resembles the pattern for non-vesiculated MORB magma and potentially reflects that of the depleted mantle source. This pattern is similar to the “mean MORB” pattern (computed from MORB glasses with40Ar/36Ar > 10,000) although a higher enrichment in He (and possibly Ne) compared to the heavier rare gases is observed in MORB. The overall similarity in abundance patterns for MORB and popping rocks indicates that vesiculation and vesicle loss do not fractionate the ArKrXe relative abundances from those in non-vesiculated magma, and that the modern flux ratios of these gases at ridges are similar to their elemental ratios in the depleted mantle. The degassing flux of He at ridge crests estimated from the MORB He deficit relative to popping rocks is comparable to the flux derived from the3He budget for the abyssal ocean. This suggests that degassing at ridges may be strongly influenced by the dynamics and style of submarine volcanism.  相似文献

Evidence from Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 lunar samples indicates that particle radiation is not important for the production of grains in the lunar soil greater than 22 microns in size even though sufficiently prolonged irradiations by protons, heavy ions and electrons fracture minerals and glasses like those found on the lunar surface.  相似文献

The lunar crust at the Apollo 16 landing site contains substantial amounts of a “primitive component” in which the ferromagnesian group of elements is concentrated. The composition of this component can be retrieved via an analysis of mixing relationships displayed by lunar breccias. It is found to be a komatiite which is compositionally similar to terrestrial komatiites both in major and minor elements. The komatiite component of the lunar crust is believed to have formed by extensive degrees of melting of the lunar interior at depths greater than were involved in the formation of the lunar magma ocean which was parental to the crust. After formation of the anorthositic crust, it was invaded by extensive flows and intrusions of komatiite magma from these deeper source regions. The komatiites became intimately mixed with the anorthosite by intensive meteoroid impacts about 4.5 b.y. ago, thereby accounting for the observed mixing relationships displayed by the crust. The compositional similarity between lunar and terrestrial komatiites strongly implies a corresponding similarity between the compositions of their source regions in the lunar interior and the Earth's upper mantle. The composition of the lunar interior can be modelled more specifically by combining the komatiite composition with its liquidus olivine composition (as determined experimentally) in proportions chosen so as to produce a cosmochemically acceptable range of Mg/Si ratios for the bulk Moon. Except for higher FeO and lower Na2O, the range of compositions thereby obtained for the bulk moon is very similar to the composition of the Earth's upper mantle. The effects of meteoritic contamination on the abundances of cobalt and nickel in lunar highland breccias were subtracted on the assumption that the contaminating projectiles were chondritic. The cobalt and nickel residuals thereby obtained were found to correlate strongly with the (Mg + Fe) content of the breccias, demonstrating that the Co and Ni are associated with the ferromagnesian component of the breccias and are genuinely indigenous to the Moon. The lunar highland Co and Ni residuals also display striking Ni/Co versus Ni correlations which follow a similar trend to those displayed by terrestrial basalts, picrites and komatiites. The lunar trends provide further decisive evidence of the indigenous nature of the Co and Ni residuals and suggest the operation of extensive fractionation controlled by olivine-liquid equilibria in producing the primitive component of the lunar breccias. Indigenous nickel abundances at the Apollo 14, 15 and 17 sites are much lower than at the Apollo 16 site, although rocks from all sites follow the same Ni/Co versus Ni trends. It is suggested that the primitive component at the Apollo 14, 15 and 17 sites was generally of basaltic composition, in contrast to the komatiitic nature of the Apollo 16 primitive component.  相似文献

Magnetic minerals are mostly identified by a combination of rock magnetic and microscopic techniques and the ferrofluid method in combination with an optical microscope was applied during the last decades. But today, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is preferred for the observation of mineral phases because its depth of focus and resolving capability at the same magnification. In this study, we report on a method, which allows ferrofluid application under the SEM. We coated a polished basalt sample containing titanomagnetite grains with high demagnetizing fields, with a colloidal suspension containing magnetite particles (ferrofluid) ranging in size between 11 and 20 nm. Due to large gradients of multidomain grains the ferrofluid particles adhered to their surfaces. Other grains of similar composition present (ilmenohematite) but with low demagnetizing fields do not generate large magnetic gradients and therefore do not attract the colloidal particles. Upon evaporation of the ferrofluid and covering the sample with conducting material the magnetic grains with high demagnetizing field are easily identifiable under the scanning electron microscope. The different mineralogy observed by this method is confirmed by temperature dependent variation of magnetic susceptibility, revealing titanomagnetite and ilmenohematite as magnetic carriers in the basaltic samples.  相似文献

The composition of fluid inclusions (FI) often represents the initial geochemical characteristics of palaeo-fluid in reservoir rock. Influence on composition and carbon isotopic composition of gas during primary migration, reservoir-forming and subsequent secondary alterations are discussed through comparing fluid inclusion gas with coal-formed gas and natural gas in present gas reservoirs in the Ordos Basin. The results show that primary migration of gas has significant effect on the molecular but not on the carbon isotopic composition of methane. Migration and diffusion fractionation took place during the secondary migration of gas in Upper Paleozoic gas reservoir according to carbon isotopic composition of methane in Fls. Composition and carbon isotopic composition of natural gas were nearly unchanged after the gas reservoir forming through comparing the FI gases with the natural gas in present gas reservoir.

On the basis of the4He/20Ne ratios in feldspathic particles from Apollo 11, basaltic fragments from Apollo 11, and magnetic separates from Apollo 12 fines, one expects the former to have the highest, and the Apollo 12 material to have the lowest84Kr/132Xe ratios. This is not the case; the84Kr/132Xe ratios from sample 12070 are substantially greater than those from the feldspathic and basaltic fragments in 10084. The trend-reversal in the feldspathic particles could be due to the trapping of genuine primordial lunar Kr and Xe. The reversal in the Apollo 11 basaltic fragments might be due to periodicnear-quantitative loss of the lighter gases by impact heating, with the Apollo 11 fines containing a relatively large proportion of strongly heated fragments.  相似文献

Noble gas elemental and isotopic abundances were measured in seven deep-sea water samples from five different sampling sites in the Nankai Trough, the Japan Trench and the Kuril Trench. The samples were obtained by the manned submersible “Nautile”. Most of the sampling sites are associated with clam colonies and/or fluid venting. Excesses both in3He/4He ratio and He concentration are observed in a seawater sample collected a few kilometers off the clam colonies which were found at a depth of 3830 m at the mouth of the Tenryu Canyon. Concentrations of noble gases (Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) in this sample show progressive depletion from Ne to Xe relative to those in 1°C air-saturated seawater, which can be attributed to mixing of hot water ( 15°C) with cold ambient water ( 1°C). Isotopic compositions of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in this sample are atmospheric. These observations may reflect venting of hot pore water around the Tenryu Canyon. All the other samples show a significant excess in concentration of all noble gases relative to 1°C air-saturated seawater and the isotopic compositions are atmospheric. This excess of noble gas concentrations may appear to be air contamination in the samples. However, results of hydrocarbon analyses of the Kaiko samples imply that such large amount of air contamination is improbable. Decomposition of gas hydrate in deep-sea sediments is a more likely explanation for the observed excess of noble gas concentration.  相似文献

Polymict samples can be used to establish mass-balance constraints regarding the bulk composition of the lunar crust, and to gauge the degree of regional heterogeneity in the composition of the lunar crust. The most ideally polymict type of sample is finely-mixed regolith (lunar soil), or its lithified equivalent, regolith breccia. Fortunately, lunar regolith breccias can occasionally be found at great distances from their points of origin — most of the known lunar meteorites are regolith breccias. We are searching for examples of exotic regolith samples among the Apollo regolith breccia collection. Most of the 21 Apollo regolith breccias analyzed for this study strongly resemble the local soils over which they were collected. Nine regolith breccias from Apollo 16 are surprisingly mature compared to previously-analyzed Apollo 16 regolith breccias, and six of the seven from Apollo 16 Station 5 have lower, more local-soil-like,mg ratios than previously analyzed regolith breccias from this station. Several of the Apollo 14 regolith breccias investigated show significantly highermg, and lower Al, than the local soils. The most interesting sample we have investigated is 14076,1, from a lithology that constitutes roughly half of a 2.0-g pebble. The presence of spherules indicates a regolith derivation for 14076,1, yet its highly aluminous (30 wt.% Al2O3) composition is clearly exotic to the 1.6-km traverse surface over which the Apollo 14 samples were collected. This sample resembles soils from the Descartes (Apollo 16) highlands far more than it does any other polymict sample from the Fra Mauro (Apollo 14) region. The I/sFeO maturity index is extremely low, but this may be a result of thermal annealing. A variety of siderophile elements occur in 14076,1 at typical regolith concentrations. The chemistry of the second most aluminous regolith sample from Apollo 14, 14315, can only be roughly approximated as a mixture of local regolith and 14076,1-like material. However, the low a priori statistical probability for long-distance horizontal transport by impact cratering, along with the relatively high contents of incompatible elements in 14076,1 (despite its high Al content), suggest that this regolith breccia probably originated within a few hundred kilometers of the Appollo 14 site. If so, its compositional resemblance to ferroan anorthosite tends to suggest that the regional crust is, or originally was, far richer in ferroan anorthosite than implied by the meager statistics for pristine rocks from this site. Thus, 14076,1 tends to strengthen the hypothesis that ferroan anorthosite originated as the flotation crust of a global magmasphere.  相似文献

Particle track measurements have been made in nearly 500 individual grains from 13 levels in the 54–80 cm depth range of the Apollo 15 deep core. They reveal a wide range of track densities at all depths and some systematic variations within layers, indicating that both predepositional mixing and subsequent layering are present and that separate sub-layers exist within larger regions where no sub-layers are visible. Minimum track densities are inferred to be useful measures of maximum residence times for undisturbed layers. Using the observed minimum track densities we conclude that the average deposition rate in this section of soil column was ≥ 0.4 cm/million years.  相似文献

The Apollo 11 soil breccias are samplers of the ancient lunar environment due to their history in the regolith and their efficient closure to addition of recent solar wind upon compaction. These breccias contain the lowest15N/14N isotopic ratio yet reported for any lunar sample (in fact, for any natural sample). This extends the range of variation of15N/14N of the solar wind to greater than 30%, from a δ15N of ?190‰ in the past to +120‰ at present. No mechanism is yet known that is capable of accounting for such a large change in the15N/14N ratio without producing a substantial concomitant change in the13C/12C ratio, although some sort of nuclear reaction in the sun appears to be required. Apollo 11 soil breccias and 15086 are all formed by meteoritic impacts which compact the lower regolith against the basement rock without much heating. Rock 15086 formed from the layer of regolith between 100 and 200 cm depth, as shown by the close agreement between the nitrogen content and isotopic ratios of 15086 and those of the Apollo 15 deep drill core. Cosmic ray exposure ages, based on spallation-produced15N, are 2.3 ± 0.4 b.y. for Apollo 11 breccias. This age is much greater than the estimate from cosmogenic21Ne, presumably due to diffusive loss of neon.  相似文献

The Luna 16 regolith sample differs from Apollo 11, 12 and 14 regolith and basalt samples by having smaller negative Eu and Sr anomalies and nearly chondritic Eu/Sm and Eu/Sr ratios although the overall REE, Ba, Sr and U concentrations are 25 to 45 times chondrites. Major element data, in particular FeO vs. Al2O3, show that the Luna 16 regolith sample is composed of materials that follow a quantitatively different Fe/Al variation than do Apollo 11, 12, 14 and 15 samples. The small Eu and Sr anomalies and the displaced Fe/Al variation are two chemical features unique to the Luna 16 regolith sample. The Luna 16 regolith sample can contain little if any of the rock types abundant at Apollo sites, thus indicating that the unique chemical features are typical of local or nearby materials and indicate a separate petrogenetic province for major component rock types of the Luna 16 regolith.  相似文献

A technique employing the resonant nuclear reaction 1H(19F, αγ) 16O has been used to measure hydrogen concentration versus depth in selected coarse fine fragments from the Apollo 11 and Apollo 15 missions, and in glass coated surface chips from two Apollo 15 rocks. The highly variable hydrogen content in the coarse fine fragments is concentrated mainly in a layer extending from the surface to a depth of 2000 ± 500A?. The hydrogen content of the surface region of the Apollo 15 rock chips is comparable to that of the coarse fine samples, but is concentrated mainly within a few hundred angstroms of the surface. The hydrogen depth distribution in a piece of platinum foil from the Apollo 16 Lunar surface Cosmic Ray Experiment was also measured in an attempt to place a limit on the flux of 10–40 keV protons associated with a solar flare event.  相似文献
