Abstract

Results of a survey to find out whether the GIS program in the Department of Geography at Southwest Texas Stare University (SWT) has served its graduates well are presented. In recent years, a considerable amount of effort has been given to the development of strategies for expanding the existing horizon of GIS education, integrating existing programs, and improving the ways in which GIS education is delivered. This study takes a different approach and seeks to get input from geography graduates who have secured a job in the real world for improving a university GIS program. Based on 26 responses to the survey, employment categories of SWT geography graduates are examined first. Then, geography courses that are considered most helpful in career development by the survey participants are identified. Third, useful GIS courses and essential skills required by the marketplace in the real world as suggested by the survey participants are discussed. It is clear from the results of the survey that the geography program at SWT in general has served its graduates well. Results from the survey also clearly indicate that GIS skills are useful in the career development of most geography graduates, particularly for those who have a concentration area in either GIS/Cartography, Resource and Environmental Studies, or Urban and Regional Planning.  相似文献

从操作对象、数据管理、分析模型、系统功能、GIS应用等五方面对地理信息系统所具有的或所表现出的地理学特性作了初步的探讨,认为:地理学是GIS的理论依托,地理学特性、地理区域分析方法、地理思维方式渗透在GIS的整个工作流程中,成为GIS区别于其他信息系统的本质特征,而计算机等相关技术作为实现GIS功能的技术支持。不应该成为GIS的理论根本。GIS是地理科学体系的重要组成部分,是现代地理研究的重要手段和工具,具有显著的地理性,GIS专业学生应当重视地理学理论的学习。  相似文献

Representing Datum-level Uncertainty in Historical GIS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Geographic information systems have great potential as a tool for studying and teaching historical geography. However, using traditional GIS data models, even spatio-temporal forms, has been difficult due to the prevalence of uncertainty—both ambiguity and fuzziness—in source information concerning space, time, and theme. Explicitly uncertain assertions of a geo-historical datum can be modeled as an Evidentiary Set, a hybrid of a fuzzy set with probability and Dempster-Shafer evidence theory. This set formalism is designed to represent continuous and discrete value ambiguity (e.g., "about 10"), and fuzzy membership (e.g., "somewhat Central European"), including ambiguous membership and other fuzzy-ambiguous combinations. The formal set structure can be stored in GIS by representing continuous variation with a patch model, producing logical models for object-oriented and relational GIS databases. The relational implementation was tested in two GIS databases focused on human historical geography, showing the potential for the model to represent datum-level uncertainty in a wide variety of GIS applications.  相似文献

The relationship between spatial analysis and GIS has been a debating point for over a decade. Some see GIS as leading the way to a new era in which the desire and the ability to analyse spatial data is widespread, not just in geography but throughout all disciplines in which spatial data are encountered. Others see GIS as simply providing a medium for the recycling of out-dated spatial analytical techniques and models. This paper describes a role for GIS through the development of new forms of ‘local’ or ‘context-dependent’ spatial analytical methods in which the focus is on exceptions to the general trend represented by the more traditional ‘global’ methods.  相似文献

The research community of Geographic Information Systems and Science (GIS) has been growing rapidly during the last two decades. Little attention has been paid to understanding its geography, structure and evolution. Taking a new organizational perspective, this article aims to fill the knowledge gap by analyzing collaboration and citation networks between GIS research organizations, including academic institutions, government agencies, businesses, and others. These two networks are analyzed in geographical and bibliographical spaces, respectively, to discover characteristic distributions and structures. The results show an uneven geographic distribution of GIS research organizations, and clustered spatial interactions between them. Both collaboration and citation networks exhibit typical “scale‐free” structures, which came into being around the year 2000 and have remained to the present. Further, the GIS research community is composed of 11 cohesive sub‐groups, with each having a clear hub‐spoke structure and a few highly connected organizations as leaders. These results shed light on the overall picture of the GIS research community, and offer a reference system that stimulates further exploration.  相似文献

随着现代遥感技术和计算机信息处理技术的发展,RS、GIS技术为公路工程可行性分析及线路的比较选优提供了有力工具,对不良地质体的定位分析、预报提供了技术支撑。本文提出了基于RS、GIS的公路工程地质勘察的一整套工作程序和技术路线,并在此基础上完成空间分析演示和专题制图,工程可行性分析及评价取得了很好的技术效果和良好的经济效益。该研究对自然条件恶劣的地区更具现实意义。  相似文献

Abstract

A major concept in urban geography deals with determining the spheres of influence for urban centers. This paper describes an instructional module used in two different geography courses showing students how a model might be developed to measure spheres of influence for multiple urban centers within a given region. A geographic information system (GIS) is employed throughout the development of the model. This module is incorporated into a traditional undergraduate urban geography course and a beginning GIS course. The software packages used are MapViewer and Grapher. The region is the Mississippi Lowlands with five urban centers: New Orlenas, Memphis, Little Rock, Jackson, and Baton Rouge. Keywords: GIS, spheres of influence, MapViewer, urban geography.  相似文献

为了研究定性GIS的研究进展,该文借助文献计量学方法对在Web of Science库中1994年到2013年间的文献进行了挖掘分析。通过文献分析软件Histcite和Citespace对定性GIS文献的挖掘与分析,发现定性GIS的研究热点主要集中在空间推理及其方法和算法的探讨、空间信息的定性表示等方面。定性GIS在1999年有了突破性的进展,但定性GIS并没有只单纯应用于地理学范畴,而是在随后的发展中,较多地应用在社会科学和自然科学等领域。  相似文献

针对城市地理时空数据的专业类别多、数据格式多、数据分散等诸多特性,提出了栅格式数据、图形式数据、要素式数据、类GIS数据、ArcGIS数据5大类地理时空数据的管理方案。采用基于富客户端的地图增强技术、基于时间帧的时空数据动态表达技术和空间数据及平台功能自扩展定制技术,对城市地理时空大数据管理与应用平台进行了总体设计,开发了集管理与应用于一体的资源创建与管理系统、信息集成共享系统、数据交互应用系统,实现了城市地理时空大数据的管理与应用的高效性。本文提出的技术方法已在长沙市规划交通勘测信息集成管理与应用共享平台项目建设中得到验证,为城市地理时空大数据的集成管理和共享应用提供了技术经验。  相似文献

This paper examines the status of efforts to implement GIS in Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) education in the United States. Factors promoting and impeding the growth and diffusion of GIS are identified and suggestions for action on the part of higher education GIS specialists are made. In the United States more science teachers have adopted GIS geography/social studies teachers for several reasons. These include science teacher preservice preparation and the essentially different natures of the respective disciplines. Preservice education and teachers' perceptions of geography emerge as key factors influencing the diffusion of GIS in K-12 classrooms. The need for on cognition and GIS before effective curricula and instruction can be developed is emphasized. Three strategies directed at higher education GIS specialists may help implement this eduational innovation. They are: (1) modelling GIS instruction in content classes; (2) including GIS in preservice preparation classes; and (3) outreach to professors who tach educational technology to educate than regarding GIS. The addendum by Paul Heinrich which follows this paper compares US and UK experiences in the diffusion of GIS in elementary and secondary schools.  相似文献

系统地阐述了地图、地理信息系统、地图数据库、地理信息系统(GIS)数据库之间的相互联系,着重指出了地图数据库、GIS数据库之间的差别。针对人们对地图数据库与GIS数据库的模糊认识,以及我国不同阶段地理数据生产、地理数据库建设的途径、生产工艺的特点,指出了当前我国不少GIS数据的建设实际上还是地图数据库的建设,没有达到GIS数据库建设的要求。文章认为,以目前GIS的技术水平,同时建立与维护GIS数据库与地图数据库的必要性。地图数据库为社会提供各种比例尺的地图服务,GIS数据库为其应用提供各种时空尺度的地理信息服务。随着GIS技术及制图综合技术的发展,最终将以统一的GIS数据库同时提供多比例尺地图服务及各种时空尺度的地理信息服务。  相似文献

The ability to visualize location and time information on satellite‐generated maps using geographic information systems (GIS) such as Google Earth has enabled researchers with limited mapping expertise to use GIS for a wide range of applications. GIS holds special benefits for research in historical geography involving visualization of events and time‐based changes in geographical information. This article describes a Microsoft Excel VBA application which automatically converts information contained in a Microsoft Excel workbook into a.kml (Keyhole Markup Language) file suitable for display by mapping systems such as Google Earth. The application requires no knowledge of KML or Excel VBA. An example illustrates how the application can be used to trace the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe.  相似文献

With the increasing demands for geospatial analytics in industry and academia, the need for Geographic Information Systems/Science (GIS) education is on the rise. A growing number of departments in geography have launched or expanded their GIS graduate programs. However, the factors influencing students choosing GIS programs have not been examined yet. In this study, we looked at Chinese students applying for overseas GIS programs and examined factors influencing their decision-making. We distributed the survey in GISphere, one of the largest GIS international student communities, and 84 valid questionnaires were returned. We analyzed the spatial and demographic patterns of Chinese students applying for overseas GIS programs. We identify five main factors that affect their choices of GIS programs: (1) education quality and awareness, (2) physical, social, and political environments, (3) improved employment prospects, (4) personal recommendations, and (5) the application process. Our study offers implications for the development of GIS graduate programs. We anticipate that the conclusions drawn from this research will benefit and advance geography and GIS education globally.  相似文献

GIS自产生至今30多年来,世界各国都竞相开展GIS技术研究和应用开发,使其得到了迅速的发展,已形成较为完整的理论体系和大批实用系统,并已在社会各专业领域得到广泛应用并产生了巨大效益,目前,开始朝着产业化、集成化、智能化和社会化的方向发展。随着3S技术的集成应用,人们对GIS的运行效率及其深入的应用提出了更高的要求,地理信息智能化处理已成为地图学和GIS建设必须解决的问题,也是GIS发展的必然方向。在地理信息处理中采用人工智能技术,发展智能GIS或者专家GIS,是解决复杂地学问题的重要途径,也是目前GIS最吸引人的一个应用方向。目前在地理信息处理的许多领域都在使用人工智能技术,比如地图模式识别、地理数据的自动分类、地学专家系统、智能GIS、空间数据挖掘等。本文通过对当前地理信息智能化处理技术发展现状的阐述,旨在探索人工智能在地理信息处理中的应用前景。  相似文献
