Estimates made of lowland precipitation and evaporation in Britain during the last (Devensian) glaciation suggest that during the cold periods of the Devensian precipitation was probably low, between 260 and 370 mm/year, with winter precipitation between 80 and 120 mm, whereas at the thermal maximum of the Upton Warren Interstadial lowland precipitation was probably in the range 450 to 650 mm/year. Two summer precipitation regimes are identified during the cold periods, one with high values and the other with low. The high summer precipitation variant leads to moist conditions with July and August precipitation values similar to those at the present day, and global circulation models suggest that the moist regime may have existed at the time of the maximum advance of the ice sheets. On the other hand, the low summer precipitation variant leads to a dry summer with wind action creating aeolian deposits, and this variant probably existed at earlier times in the glacial period. About 6500 yr B.P., in the Atlantic period, forest conditions probably caused increased evaporation which more than compensated for the increased precipitation of the time, causing low runoff conditions. The clearance of British forests by man since 6500 yr B.P. has probably led to an absolute increase in runoff values even though precipitation values have fallen.  相似文献

Mineral paragenescs in the prehnite-pumpellyite to greenschistfades transition of the Karmutsen metabasites are markedly differentbetween amygdule and matrix, indicating that the size of equilibriumdomain is very small. Characteristic amygdule assemblages (+chlorite + quartz) vary from: (1) prehnite + pumpeUyite + epidote,prehnite + pumpellyite + calcite, and pumpellyite + epidote+ calcite for the prehnite-pumpellyite facies; through (2) calcite+ epidote + prehnite or pumpellyite for the transition zone;to (3) actinolite + epidote + calrite for the greenschist facies.Actinolite first appears in the matrix of the transition zone.Na-rich wairakites containing rare analcime inclusions coexistwith epidote or Al-rich pumpellyite in one prehnite-pumpellyitefacies sample. Phase relations and compositions of these wairakite-bearingassemblages further suggest that pumpellyite may have a compositionalgap between 0.10 and 0.15 XFe?. Although the facies boundaries are gradational due to the multi-varianceof the assemblages, several transition equilibria are establishedin the amygdule assemblages. At low Xco2, pumpellyite disappearsprior to prehnite by a discontinuous-type reaction, pumpellyite+ quartz + CO2 = prehnite + epidote + calcite + chlorite + H2O,whereas prehnite disappears by a continuous-type reaction, prehnite+ CO2 = calcite + epidote + quartz-l-H2O. On the other hand,at higher XCO2 a prehnite-out reaction, prehnite + chlorite+ H2O + CO2 = calcite + pumpellyite + quartz, precedes a pumpellyiteoutreaction, pumpellyite + CO2 = calcite + epidote + chlorite +quartz + H2O. The first appearance of the greenschist faciesassemblages is defined at both low and high XCOj by a reaction,calcite + chlorite + quartz = epidote + actinolite+ H2O + CO2.Thus, these transition equilibria are highly dependent on bothXFe3+ + of Ca-Al silicates and XH20 of the fluid phase. Phaseequilibria together with the compositional data of Ca-Al silicatesindicate that the prehnite-pumpellyite to greenschist faciestransition for the Karmutsen metabasites occurred at approximately1.7 kb and 300?C, and at very low Xco2, probably far less than0.1.  相似文献

Two different instruments were used over a 17.5 month period to make high-resolution temperature measurements in the VC-2B corehole. The first tool transmits data to the surface and has a 300°C limitation imposed by the logging cable; the second tool has a design capability of 400°C and stores data in an onboard computer. The pressure in the corehole was calculated from an assumed equation of state that accounts for the NaCl dissolved in the borehole fluids. The maximum thermodynamic state achieved in VC-2B (136 bars, 295°C) occurred at a bottom hole depth of 1.76 km. Temperature data and the equation of state were used to calculate the pressure within a closed vessel withdrawn from the corehole. These calculations support experimental observations that fluid sampling devices used in VC-2B leak and return anomalously large amounts of fluid to the surface. The extension of the methods used herein to the investigation of subseafloor systems that approach the critical point of sea water is discussed.  相似文献

Evidence that REE have been metamorphically redistributed between plagioclase feldspar and mafic minerals, as suggested by Weaveret al. (1981) is not forthcoming from the six Fiskenaesset rocks used in the study. REE patterns of the separated feldspars and of two rocks containing small modal amounts of mafic minerals are consistent with a light REE-enriched magma during the formation of the Fiskenaesset Complex.  相似文献

This paper attempts at full characterization of the unique global 8.2 Kyr B.P. cooling event. Significant atmospheric cooling started during 9.5–8.5 Kyr B.P. when the Sun was extremely quiet during three periods of ∼ 50–100 years. The flood of melt water in the N. Atlantic from glacial lakes during the demise of the Laurentide ice sheet, starting at ∼ 8.5 Kyr B.P., adds to the atmospheric cooling. Climatic forcing events occurred at 8.5 Kyr B.P., at 8.2 Kyr B.P. and finally at 8.06 Kyr B.P., leading to concurrent increases or decreases in the atmospheric Δ14C levels, completely consistent with the climatic forcing proposed here.  相似文献

A seasonal reconstruction of the Indian Ocean during the last glacial maximum (18,000 yr B.P.) reveals that its surface circulation and sea surface temperature patterns were significantly different from the modern Indian Ocean. This reconstruction is based on the planktonic foraminiferal biogeography and estimated sea surface temperatures in 42 Indian Ocean samples. Compared to modern conditions, the polar front was 5° to 10° latitude further north during the last glacial maximum; the Subtropical Convergence was 2° to 5° latitude further north. The West Australian Current was more intense as part of the West Wind Drift was deflected northward along the coast of Australia. The Agulhas Current was cooler and weaker during the summer and more saline and subtropical during the winter. In general, the low latitudes underwent little temperature change. The western Arabian Sea was warmer which implies less upwelling and a weaker Southwest Monsoon. On the average, the Indian Ocean was 1.9°C cooler in February and 1.7°C cooler in August during the last glacial maximum.  相似文献
