The solar wind-induced drag on magnetically large comets is estimated as follows. As the comet approaches the sun, solar radiation striking the comet surface generates a surrounding neutral atmosphere which is subsequently ionized. The resulting plasma cloud interacts with the solar wind to produce a comet magnetosphere and associated collision-free shock wave. An approximation to the accompanying drag is obtained using the similarity between the comet magnetosphere and that of the earth, and is shown to be much less than the mechanical mass loss force.  相似文献

A modified Roche potential which incorporates the effects of radiation pressure due to one component of a binary system is mathematically explored. In some cases, the resulting potentials do not exhibit the familiar contact surfaces of the classical Roche potential. The concept of a contact surface, which has been fundamental to the investigations of close binary systems, must be used with discretion for close binaries in which one component is very luminous. A convenient criterion for the existence of a contact surface is given by (1-μ) ? 3δc 3/2 \((1 - 2(\tfrac{2}{3})^4 \delta _c )\) , (δc?1) where μ is the mass of the very luminous star in terms of the system mass. For systems of given μ, no contact surface exists if δ is greater than δc where δ is the ratio of radiation pressure force to gravitational attraction. Furthermore, energy considerations of the modified Roche potential indicate that binary systems with δ < δc should have a greater tendency to form rings than those with δ < δc.  相似文献

We present a new general scheme for calculating the structure and dynamics of radiation-pressure-driven photoionized flows. The new method goes one step beyond the Sobolev approximation. It involves a numerical solution of the radiative transfer in absorption lines, including the effects of differential expansion and line interactions such as line locking and blanketing. We also present a new scheme for calculating the radiation pressure due to trapped line photons in finite, differentially expanding flows. We compare our results for the radiation pressure force with those obtained using the Sobolev approximation and show the limitations of the latter. In particular, we demonstrate that the Sobolev method gives a poor approximation near discontinuity surfaces and its neglect of line blanketing can lead to erroneous results in high-velocity flows. We combine the newly calculated radiation pressure force with self-consistent photoionization and thermal calculations to study the dynamics and spectral features of broad absorption-line flows and highly ionized gas flows in active galactic nuclei (AGN). A comparison with Sobolev-type calculations shows that the latter overestimates the terminal velocity of the flow and, conversely, underestimates its opacity. We also show that line locking on broad emission lines can have a significant effect on the dynamics and spectral features of AGN flows.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze the dynamical behavior of large dust grains in the vicinity of a cometary nucleus. To this end we consider the gravitational field of the irregularly shaped body, as well as its electric and magnetic fields. Without considering the effect of gas friction and solar radiation, we find that there exist grains which are static relative to the cometary nucleus; the positions of these grains are the stable equilibria. There also exist grains in the stable periodic orbits close to the cometary nucleus. The grains in the stable equilibria or the stable periodic orbits won’t escape or impact on the surface of the cometary nucleus. The results are applicable for large charge dusts with small area-mass ratio which are near the cometary nucleus and far from the Solar. It is found that the resonant periodic orbit can be stable, and there exist stable non-resonant periodic orbits, stable resonant periodic orbits and unstable resonant periodic orbits in the potential field of cometary nuclei. The comet gravity force, solar gravity force, electric force, magnetic force, solar radiation pressure, as well as the gas drag force are all considered to analyze the order of magnitude of these forces acting on the grains with different parameters. Let the distance of the dust grain relative to the mass centre of the cometary nucleus, the charge and the mass of the dust grain vary, respectively, fix other parameters, we calculated the strengths of different forces. The motion of the dust grain depends on the area-mass ratio, the charge, and the distance relative to the comet’s mass center. For a large dust grain (> 1 mm) close to the cometary nucleus which has a small value of area-mass ratio, the comet gravity is the largest force acting on the dust grain. For a small dust grain (< 1 mm) close to the cometary nucleus with large value of area-mass ratio, both the solar radiation pressure and the comet gravity are two major forces. If the a small dust grain which is close to the cometary nucleus have the large value of charge, the magnetic force, the solar radiation pressure, and the electric force are all major forces. When the large dust grain is far away from the cometary nucleus, the solar gravity and solar radiation pressure are both major forces.  相似文献

We present three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics calculations of warped accretion discs in X-ray binary systems. Geometrically thin, optically thick accretion discs are illuminated by a central radiation source. This illumination exerts a non-axisymmetric radiation pressure on the surface of the disc, resulting in a torque that acts on the disc to induce a twist or warp. Initially planar discs are unstable to warping driven by the radiation torque and, in general, the warps also precess in a retrograde direction relative to the orbital flow. We simulate a number of X-ray binary systems which have different mass ratios, using a number of different luminosities for each. Radiation-driven warping occurs for all systems simulated. For mass ratios   q ∼ 0.1  a moderate warp occurs in the inner disc while the outer disc remains in the orbital plane (cf. X 1916−053). For less extreme mass ratios, the entire disc tilts out of the orbital plane (cf. Her X–1). For discs that are tilted out of the orbital plane in which the outer edge material of the disc is precessing in a prograde direction, we obtain both positive and negative superhumps simultaneously in the dissipation light curve (cf. V603 Aql).  相似文献

We consider the square configuration of photo-gravitational elliptic restricted five-body problem and study the Sitnikov motions. The four radiating primaries are of equal mass placed at the vertices of square and the fifth body having negligible mass performs oscillations along a straight line perpendicular to the orbital plane of the primaries. The motion of the fifth body is called vertical periodic motion and the main aim of this paper is to study the effect of radiation pressure on these periodic motions in the linear approximation. Moreover, the effects of radiation pressure on the motion of fifth body have been examined with the help of Poincare surfaces of section. By escalating the radiation pressure, surrounding periodic tubes and islands disappear and chaotic motion occurs near the hyperbolic points. Further, by escalating the radiation pressure, the main stochastic region joins the escaping one.  相似文献

We present the results of three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the final stages of in-spiral in a black hole–neutron star binary, when the separation is comparable to the stellar radius. We use a Newtonian smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code to model the evolution of the system, and take the neutron star to be a polytrope with a soft (adiabatic indices     and     equation of state and the black hole to be a Newtonian point mass. The only non-Newtonian effect we include is a gravitational radiation back reaction force, computed in the quadrupole approximation for point masses. We use irrotational binaries as initial conditions for our dynamical simulations, which are begun when the system is on the verge of initiating mass transfer and followed for approximately 23 ms. For all the cases studied we find that the star is disrupted on a dynamical time-scale, and forms a massive     accretion torus around the spinning (Kerr) black hole. The rotation axis is clear of baryons (less than 10−5 M within 10°) to an extent that would not preclude the formation of a relativistic fireball capable of powering a cosmological gamma-ray burst. Some mass (the specific amount is sensitive to the stiffness of the equation of state) may be dynamically ejected from the system during the coalescence and could undergo r-process nucleosynthesis. We calculate the waveforms, luminosities and energy spectra of the gravitational radiation signal, and show how they reflect the global outcome of the coalescence process.  相似文献

We examine the radial motion of a material particle in the intense radiation field of a static spherically symmetric compact object with spherical emitting surface outside the Schwarzschild radius. This paper generalizes previous work which dealt with radial motion in the Thomson limit, where the radiation force is simply proportional to the radiative flux. In the general case the average time component of the 4-momentum transferred to the particle is not negligible compared with its rest mass. Consequently, we find that the frequency dependence of the radiation force owing to Compton scattering for highly energetic photons gives rise to an increase in the effective mass of the test particle. In this work we outline the effects of this frequency dependence and compare these with the results in the Thomson limit. We present the frequency dependent saturation velocity curves for a range of stellar luminosities and radiation frequencies and present the resulting phase-space diagrams corresponding to the radial test particle trajectories. In particular, the stable equilibrium points which exist in the Thomson limit are found to be absent in the general case.  相似文献

The restricted 3-body problem is generalised to include the effects of an inverse square distance radiation pressure force on the infinitesimal mass due to the large masses, which are both arbitrarily luminous. A complete solution of the problems of existence and linear stability of the equilibrium points is given for all values of radiation pressures of both liminous bodies, and all values of mass ratios. It is shown that the inner Lagrange point, L1, can be stable, but only when both large masses are luminous. Four equilibrium points, L6, L7, L8, and L9 can exist out of the orbital plane when the radiation pressure of the smaller mass is very high. Although L8 and L9 are always linearly unstable, L6 and L7 are stable for a small range of radiation pressures provided that both large masses are luminous.  相似文献

We present a numerical analysis of the spin evolution of neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries, trying to explain the discrepancy in the spin period distribution between observations of millisecond pulsars and theoretical results. In our calculations, we take account of possible effects of radiation pressure and irradiation-induced instability on the structure of the disk, and the evolution of the mass transfer rate, respectively. We report the following results: (1) The radiation pressure in the accretion disk leads to a slight increase of spin periods, and the variation of mass transfer rate caused by the neutron star irradiation can shorten the spin-down phase of evolution. (2) The calculated results of the model combining radiation pressure and irradiation show that the accretion is strongly limited by the radiation pressure in the high mass transfer phase. (3) The accreted mass and fastness parameter can affect the number of systems in the equilibrium state.  相似文献

We examine the physical processes of radiatively driven mass accretion on to galactic nuclei, owing to intensive radiation from circumnuclear starbursts. The radiation from a starburst not only causes the inner gas disc to contract via radition flux force, but also extracts angular momentum owing to relativistic radiation drag, thereby inducing an avalanche of the surface layer of the disc. To analyse such a mechanism, the radiation–hydrodynamical equations are solved, including the effects of the radiation drag force as well as the radiation flux force. As a result, it is found that the mass accretion rate owing to the radiative avalanche is given by M ˙ ( r )= η ( L */ c 2)( r / R )2 (Δ R / R )(1 −  e −τ) at radius r , where the efficiency η ranges from 0.2 up to 1, L * and R are respectively the bolometric luminosity and the radius of the starburst ring, Δ R is the extent of the emission regions, and τ is the face-on optical depth of the disc. In an optically thick regime, the rate depends upon neither the optical depth nor the surface mass density distribution of the disc. The present radiatively driven mass accretion may provide a physical mechanism which enables mass accretion from 100-pc scales down to ∼ parsec scales, and it may eventually be linked to advection-dominated viscous accretion on to a massive black hole. The radiation–hydrodynamical and self-gravitational instabilities of the disc are briefly discussed. In particular, the radiative acceleration possibly builds up a dusty wall, which 'shades' the nucleus in edge-on views. This provides another version of the model for the formation of an obscuring torus.  相似文献

A correct understanding of the dynamical effect of solar radiation exerted on fluffy dust particles can be achieved with assistance of a light scattering theory as well as the equation of motion. We reformulate the equation of motion so that the radiation pressure and the Poynting-Robertson effect on fluffy grains are given in both radial and nonradial directions from the center of the Sun. This allows numerical estimates of these radiation forces on fluffy dust aggregates in the framework of the discrete dipole approximation, in which the first term of the scattering coefficients in Mie theory determines the polarizability of homogeneous spheres forming the aggregates. The nonsphericity in shape turns out to play a key role in the dynamical evolution of dust particles, while its consequence depends on the rotation rate and axis of the grains. Unless a fluffy dust particle rapidly revolves on its randomly oriented axis, the nonradial radiation forces may prevent, apart from the orbital eccentricity and semimajor axis, the orbital inclination of the particle from being preserved in orbit around the Sun. However, a change in the inclination is most probably controlled by the Lorentz force as a consequence of the interaction between electric charges on the grains and the solar magnetic field. Although rapidly and randomly rotating grains spiral into the Sun under the Poynting-Robertson effect in spite of their shapes and structures, fluffy grains drift inward on time scales longer at submicrometer sizes and shorter at much larger sizes than spherical grains of the same sizes. Numerical calculations reveal that the dynamical lifetimes of fluffy particles are determined by the material composition of the grains rather than by their morphological structures and sizes. The Poynting-Robertson effect alone is nevertheless insufficient for giving a satisfactory estimate of lifetimes for fluffy dust grains since their large ratios of cross section to mass would reduce the lifetimes by enhancing the collisional probabilities. We also show that the radiation pressure on a dust particle varies with the orbital velocity of the particle but that this effect is negligibly small for dust grains in the Solar System.  相似文献

In this paper the effect of solar radiation pressure on the location and stability of the five Lagrangian points is studied, within the frame of elliptic restricted three-body problem, where the primaries are the Sun and Jupiter acting on a particle of negligible mass. We found that the radiation pressure plays the rule of slightly reducing the effective mass of the Sun and changes the location of the Lagrangian points. New formulas for the location of the collinear libration points were derived. For large values of the force ratio β, we found that at β=0.12, the collinear point L3 is stable and some families of periodic orbits can be drawn around it.  相似文献

We investigate the multiple scattering of radiation in semi-infinite homogeneous atmosphere when the sources of the radiation are distributed inhomogeneous, for example, are created by restricted beams penetrating into the medium. The case of isotropic scattering is considered. It is shown that the density of radiation and the intensity of outgoing radiation for any forms of the sources can be represented as some integrals with the real and imaginary parts of the universal H-function, which satisfies the nonlinear integral equation. We calculated the intensity of radiation emerging from the surface after multiple scattering for the case when a beam with a finite radius incident perpendicular on the medium surface. The results allowed us to estimate quantitatively when the intensity of outgoing radiation in the center of a beam coincides with that for the classical case of unbounded flux (the case considered by Chandrasekhar et al.). We compared our exact solutions with those in the diffusion approximation. For conservative medium the difference is ?20–30%, depending on the particular forms of the radiation sources. For absorbing medium the difference is much larger. Our exact semi-analytical solution can be generalized for the cases of multiple anisotropic scattering of the polarized beams. The presented simple theory can be used at the consideration of close binary systems, flare stars etc.  相似文献

The orbital accelerations of certain balloon satellites exhibit marked oscillations caused by solar radiation impinging on the surface of the satellites, which, once spherical, have assumed a spheroidal shape producing a component of force at right-angles to the Sun-satellite direction. Given the characteristics and orientation of the satellite, the equations of force are determined by the formulae of Lucas. Otherwise the phase-angle and magnitude of the right-angle force are determined by trial and error, or best-fit techniques. Using a variation of the approach developed by Aksnes, a semi-analytical algorithm is presented for evaluating the perturbations of the Keplerian elements by direct solar radiation pressure on a spheroidal satellite. The perturbations are obtained by summing over the sunlit part of each orbit and allow for a linear variation in the phase-angle. The algorithm is used to determine the orbital accelerations of 1963-30D due to direct solar radiation pressure, and these results are compared to the observed values over two separate periods of the satellite's lifetime.  相似文献

Previous analyses of the orbits of spherical balloon satellites have attempted to satisfy residuals in observed perturbations in Keplerian elements, assumed to be caused by diffuse radiation pressure, by introducing small variations ins, the parameter representing the reflection characteristics of the satellite's surface. It is difficult to distinguish, however, between those perturbations caused by diffuse radiation and those caused by reflected radiation, as a result of the deformation of the assumed sphere. Following the derivation by Lucas of exact expressions for both incident and reflected radiation forces on a prolate spheroidal satellite, and the subsequent work of Aksnes pertaining to spherical satellites, the theory is extended to include the effects of diffuse radiation whilst at the same time qualifying the assumption that the radiation force acting along the Sun-satellite line can be taken as parallel to the Sun-Earth line.  相似文献

We extend recent work that included the effect of pressure forces to derive the precession rate of eccentric accretion discs in cataclysmic variables to the case of double degenerate systems. We find that the logical scaling of the pressure force in such systems results in predictions of unrealistically high primary masses. Using the prototype AM CVn as a calibrator for the magnitude of the effect, we find that there is no scaling that applies consistently to all the systems in the class. We discuss the reasons for the lack of a superhump period to mass ratio relationship analogous to that known for SU UMa systems and suggest that this is because these secondaries do not have a single valued mass–radius relationship. We highlight the unreliability of mass ratios derived by applying the SU UMa expression to the AM CVn binaries.  相似文献

We apply the ballistic particle-cluster and cluster-cluster aggregation of spherical monomers identical in size and material composition to study the effect of the particle's shape and structure on the radiation pressure force acting on circumstellar dust particles. Furthermore, the influence of the material composition on the radiation pressure is investigated based on the assumption that the constituents of dust aggregates are composed of either silicate or carbon. We show that the ratio of radiation pressure to stellar gravity in the radial direction from a star is weaker for aggregates than for homogeneous spherical grains in the radius range of submicron or less. Therefore fluffy dust particles of submicron radius have a longer dynamical lifetime, compared to compact spherical particles. We also show that the nonradial component of the radiation pressure force can reach the same order of magnitude as the radial component of the radiation pressure reduced by stellar gravity for aggregates of submicron or less in size. This non-radial component of the radiation pressure may yield a component of random motion along the trajectories of the particles.  相似文献
