The present study extends the investigations of the hydrodynamic forces on a cylinder, laid on, or partly buried in the bed. They were determined by measuring the pressure distribution on the cylinder surface in the case of steady current, waves and coexisting flow. The pressure distribution around the cylinder was measured by using pressure transducers, which were replaced in the cylinder. Force coefficients were obtained for the ranges of Re=0.8×104–1.5×104, for steady current, low KC numbers (KC<5) for wave alone case and, for current-to-wave velocity RATIO=0, 3, 6 and infinity (current) for coexisting flow. The forces were also determined for the various burial-depth-to-diameter ratios between 0 and 0.7 values of the cylinder.  相似文献

The problem of oscillating viscous flow over a stationary cylinder of elliptic cross-section is investigated. The free stream direction is horizontal and is always normal to the cylinder axis and oscillations are only allowed in the magnitude of the stream velocity. The flow is incompressible and two-dimensional and the free steam oscillations are harmonic. The elliptic cylinder considered has a major-minor axis ratio of 0.6 and is inclined to the free stream direction at angles of incidence of either 30 or 60°. The investigation is based on the solution of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations together with the mass conservation equation. The parameters involved are the cylinder axis ratio, angle of incidence, Reynolds number, and Strouhal number. The Reynolds number ranges between 102 and 103 and the Strouhal number ranges between π/4 and π/2. The time variation of the flow field is presented in the form of streamline patterns as well as surface vorticity distribution. The surface pressure distribution and the time variation of the in-line and transverse force coefficients are also presented and compared with an inviscid flow solution for the same problem. The comparison between viscous and inviscid flow results shows a better agreement for higher values of Reynolds and Strouhal numbers.  相似文献

Most of the existing relevant materials have been obtained from experiments, in which evaluating the added mass at the resonant frequency corresponding to the peak of a frequency-response curve obtained from the “forced” vibration analysis is the most popular technique. In this paper, a simple experimental method was presented where the “free” vibration responses instead of the “forced” ones were used to determine the values of mah and Iap. The main part of the experimental system is composed of a floating body (model) and a spring–shaft shaker. The “free” vibration of this main part was induced by imposing on it an initial displacement (and/or an initial velocity), and from the time histories of displacements information such as the “damped” natural frequencies, damping ratios, sectional added mass coefficients (CV and CP) were obtained. Since the displacements of the spring–shaft shaker are “translational” and those of the floating body due to pitch motions are “angular”, a technique for the transformation between the associated parameters of the two components of the main part was presented.  相似文献

This study extends the investigations of the forces on a cylinder, laid on, or partly buried in the bed with a parallel twin dummy cylinder nearby and without it, and were determined by measuring the pressure distribution on the cylinder in the case of a steady current. The pressure distribution around the cylinder was measured by using pressure transducers. The forces on the cylinder were calculated by the integration of the measured pressures on the surface of the cylinder. Force coefficients were obtained for the ranges of Re=0.8×104–1.5×104 for the burial depth to diameter RATIO=0:0.7. The distance between axis of the measurement and dummy cylinders to diameter ratio (x/D) was 2, 1.5 and 1. The dummy cylinder was replaced downstream and upstream of the measurement cylinder.  相似文献

Momentum and heat flux were measured with a sonic anemometer at the Marine Observation Tower in the port of ItÔ. Under unstable conditions (T w -T a =3C4C), using the eddy correlation method, results show thatCd=(1.2±0.3)×10–3 andCh=(1.5±0.3)×10–3 at 5.5 m above mean sea level except for the case of weak winds. An unexpected relationship betweenCd and (–z/L) was observed, that is,Cd decreases as (–z/L) increases. If roughness variation over the sea is taken into account, we can explain the decrease in the range of (–z/L) less than 1, but not in the range greater than 1. This is due to a strong instability effect and the change of roughness class, from moderately rough to smooth.  相似文献

The results of several recent isolated investigations in planing theory are consolidated in this paper, together with new insights generated by a recent numerical solution of the vertically impacting wedge problem by Zhao and Faltinsen [(1992), Water entry of two-dimensional bodies. J. Fluid Mech. 246, 593–612]. As a result, in contrast to some earlier studies, it is found that the “wetted width” associated with the added mass is not that of the intersection of the wedge with the undisturbed water surface, but the wetted width of the splashed-up water, as originally proposed by Wagner [(1932), Uber Stoss-und Gleitvorgange an der Oberflache von Flussig-Keiten, Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, Band 12, Heft 4 (August)]. However, the splash-up ratio is not the value of (π/2–1) which he proposed, but a value which decreases with increasing deadrise, originally proposed in the late-1940s by Pierson (“Pierson's hypothesis” in the paper). For 30° deadrise, for example, Pierson's splash-up ratio is two-thirds that of Wagner's.The new equations are employed to determine the increase in the “added mass” of prismatic hull sections due to chine immersion, using experimental data. If mo is the added amss of the hull section whose chines are just wetted, Payne [(1988), Design of High-speed Boats. Volume 1: Planing. Fishergate, Inc., Annapolis, Maryland, U.S.A.] postulated that the increase in added mass due to a chine submergence (zc) would be
where b is the chine beam and k is a constant which Payne [(1988), Design of High-speed Boats. Volume 1: Planing. Fishergate, Inc., Annapolis, Maryland, U.S.A.] gave as .The present analysis includes the “one-sided flow” correction introduced in Payne [(1990), Planing and impacting forces at large trim angels. Ocean Engng 17, 201–234]. Partly for that reason and partly because of the more precise analysis of the experimental data, the present paper revises the value to k = 2 for wetted length to beam ratios normally employed. For deadrise angles in excess of 40° and wetted keel to beam ratios in excess of 2.0, there is some evidence that k < 2.0.The revised theoretical formulation is compared with eight different sets of experimental data for flat plate and prismatic hull forms and is found to be in excellent agreement when the speed is high enough for “dynamic suction” (a loss of buoyancy at low speeds and low wetted lenghts) to be unimportant. This is true for “chines-dry” operation with deadrise angles up to 50° and chines-wet operation at length to beam ratios far in excess of the most extreme conventional practice. The research involved in performing this analysis led to the realization that different towing tanks measure different wetted chine lengths for the same hulls and test conditions. Some consistently measure more splash-up than “theory” (based on Pierson's splash-up hypothesis) predicts and others measure somewhat less than the theory. Some examples are given in Appendix B. The reason for this is not understood.  相似文献

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and inorganic nutrient concentrations were determined in samples from an area encompassing the Northeast Water Polynya from June to August 1993. In June, still ice-covered polynya area surface waters (PySW) had significantly higher (p<0.05) DOC concentrations (110 μM, n=68) than surface water outside the polynya area (96 μM, n=6). Melting ice and ice algae are suggested as DOC sources. DOC concentrations found in this study are consistent with other studies showing higher DOC concentrations in the Arctic than in other ocean areas. As the productive season progressed, DOC concentrations in Polynya surface water (PySW) decreased (p<0.05) from 110 to 105 μM, while DON concentrations increased (p<0.05) from 5.6 to 6.1 μM, causing a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the C : N ratios of DOM from spring (C : N ratio 20) to summer (C : N ratio 17). We found a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the DOM C : N ratio in all water masses within the polynya area as the productive season progressed. DON was the largest fraction of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in PySW and surface waters outside the polynya area. TDN was calculated as the sum of DON, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium concentrations. DON increased (p<0.05) from 62% to 73% of TDN in PySW from spring to summer, a result of increasing DON concentrations and decreasing inorganic nitrogen concentrations over the productive season. The seasonal accumulation of DON and the corresponding decrease in nitrate concentrations in waters with primary production indicate that it is important to take the DON pool into account when estimating export production from nitrate concentration decreases in surface waters. PySW TDN concentrations decreased (p<0.05) from 9.1 (n=61) to 8.6 μM (n=60) from spring (May 25 through June 19) to summer (July 1 through July 27). The seasonal decrease in surface water TDN concentrations corresponded to increases in TDN concentrations in deeper water masses within the Polynya. Most of the TDN increase in deep water was in the form of DON. A possible explanation is that PON was dissolved (partially remineralized) in the water column at mid depths, causing increases in the DON concentration. Transfer of N from PySW (with a short residence time in the polynya area) to Polynya Intermediate Water and deep waters of the Norske and Westwind Trough with multi-year residence times keeps N from leaving the polynya area. In spring, nutrients from degradation of OM in PyIW could support primary production. The role of PyIW as an OM trap could be important in supporting primary production in the polynya area.  相似文献

Estimation of the leeway drift of small craft   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Small craft (<6·4 m) leeway is determined as a function of the wind speed in the range of 5–20 knots (3·6–10·3 m/sec). Leeway is calculated relative to the surface current by measurement of the separation distance of the small craft from a dyed patch of surface water at sea, using time-sequenced aerial photography. Leeway increases linearly with wind speed for small craft equipped with or without a sea anchor in the wind range studied. Leeway for small craft without sea anchor can be calculated from the equation UL = 0.07 UW + 0.04 where UW is the wind speed at 2 m elevation. Leeway for small craft drifted off the be calculated from the equation ULD = 0·05 UW − 0·12. The small craft drifted off the downwind direction in about 80% of the experiments. The drift angle is variable and difficult to predict.  相似文献

Using manganese-impregnated fiber extraction and high-efficiency gamma counting techniques, we measured the distribution of 228Ra and 226Ra in surface waters near the coast of Japan and in the western North Pacific. There is no evidence in our data that any significant amount of 228Ra is added to open ocean surface waters from the coastal waters around Tokyo Bay. High 228Ra concentrations (> 10 dpm/103 kg), were observed along the Kuroshio Current as compared to < 2.5 dpm/103 kg between 10° and 30°N of the central gyre, and hence the major source of 228Ra in the surface water is likely to be the East Asian continental shelf zones. A simple one-dimensional eddy diffusion and advection model is used to explain the observed decrease of 228Ra from coast to the open ocean. The model results indicate two mixing regimes across the Kuroshio Current System with apparent eddy diffusion coefficients of Ky = 4 × 105 cm2 s−1 at distance y < 200 km from the coast, and Ky = 4 × 107 cm2 s−1 at y > 200 km. Along 40°N where an eastward flow of the ‘Kuroshio Extension’ prevails, an advective flow of > 0.1 knot is consistent with the observation of nearly constant 228Ra along the track. The geographical distribution pattern of 228Ra is clearly different from that of atmospherically derived 210Pb. Thus the 228Ra in surface water serves as a useful tracer that accompanies fluvially and coastally derived elements during their subsequent lateral transport toward the central gyre.  相似文献

A salient feature of sea level records from the Adriatic Sea is the frequent occurrence of energetic seiches of period about 21 h. Once excited by a sudden wind event, such seiches often persist for days. They lose energy either to friction within the Adriatic, or by radiation through Otranto Strait into the Mediterranean. The free decay time of the dominant (lowest mode) seiche was determined from envelopes of handpassed sea level residuals from three locations (Bakar, Split and Dubrovnik) along the Croatian coast during twelve seiche episodes between 1963 and 1986 by taking into consideration only time intervals when the envelopes decreased exponentially in time, when the modelled effects of along-basin winds were smaller than the error of estimation of decay time from the envelopes and when across-basin winds were small. The free decay time thus obtained was 3.2±0.5 d. This value is consonant with the observed width of the spectral peak. The decay caused by both bottom friction and radiation was included in a one dimensional variable cross section shallow water model of the Adriatic. Bottom friction is parameterized by the coefficient k appearing in the linearized bottom stress term ρ0u (where u is the along-basin velocity and ρ0 the fluid density). The coefficient k is constrained by values obtained from linearization of the quadratic bottom stress law using estimates of near bottom currents associated with the seiche, with wind driven currents, with tides and with wind waves. Radiation is parameterized by the coefficient f appearing in the open strait boundary condition ζ =auh/c (where ζ is sea level, h is depth and c is phase speed). This parameterization of radiation provides results comparable to allowing the Adriatic to radiate into an unbounded half plane ocean. Repeated runs of the model delineate the dependence of model free seiche decay time on k and a, and these plus the estimates of k allow estimation of a.The principle conclusions of this work are as follows.
1. (1) Exponential decay of seiche amplitude with time does not necessarily guarantee that the observed decay is free of wind influence.
2. (2) Winds blowing across the Adriatic may be of comparable importance to winds blowing along the Adriatic in influencing apparent decay of seiches; across-basin winds are probably coupled to the longitudinal seiche on account of the strong along-basin variability of across-basin winds forced by Croatian coastal orography.
3. (3) The free decay time of the 21.2 h Adriatic seiche is 3.2±0.5 d.
4. (4) A one dimensional shallow water model of the seiche damped by bottom stress represented by Godin's (1988) approximation to the quadratic bottom friction law ρ0CDu|u| using the commonly accepted drag coefficient CD = 0.0015 and quantitative estimates of bottom currents associated with wind driven currents, tides and wind waves, as well as with the seiche itself with no radiation gives a damping time of 9.46 d; radiation sufficient to give the observed damping time must then account for 66% of the energy loss per period. But independent estimates of bottom friction for Adriatic wind driven currents and inertial oscillations, as well as comparisons between quadratic law bottom stress and directly measured bottom stress, all suggest that the quadratic law with CD=0.0015 substantially underestimates the bottom stress. Based on these studies, a more appropriate value of the drag coefficient is at least CD=0. In this case, bottom friction with no radiation leads to a damping time of 4.73 d, radiation sufficient to give the observed damping time then accounts for 32% of the energy loss per period.

We analysed the alkenone unsaturation ratio (UK′37) in 87 surface sediment samples from the western South Atlantic (5°N–50°S) in order to evaluate its applicability as a paleotemperature tool for this part of the ocean. The measured UK′37 ratios were converted into temperature using the global core-top calibration of Müller et al. (1998) and compared with annual mean atlas sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) of overlying surface waters. The results reveal a close correspondence (<1.5°C) between atlas and alkenone temperatures for the Western Tropical Atlantic and the Brazil Current region north of 32°S, but deviating low alkenone temperatures by −2° to −6°C are found in the regions of the Brazil–Malvinas Confluence (35–39°S) and the Malvinas Current (41–48°S). From the oceanographic evidence these low UK′37 values cannot be explained by preferential alkenone production below the mixed layer or during the cold season. Higher nutrient availability and algal growth rates are also unlikely causes. Instead, our results imply that lateral displacement of suspended particles and sediments, caused by strong surface and bottom currents, benthic storms, and downslope processes is responsible for the deviating UK′37 temperatures. In this way, particles and sediments carrying a cold water UK′37 signal of coastal or southern origin are transported northward and offshore into areas with warmer surface waters. In the northern Argentine Basin the depth between displaced and unaffected sediments appears to coincide with the boundary between the northward flowing Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) and the southward flowing North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) at about 4000 m.  相似文献

To identify some specific effects of organic contaminants on fisheries in an urbanized estuary we compared the reproductive success of starry flounder from San Francisco Bay with concentrations of tissue contaminants and hepatic mixed-function oxidase (MFO) activity. We found significantly lower (P < 0·05) sediment concentrations of total identified polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the less urbanized San Pablo Bay (SP) area (Fig. 1) than in the more urbanized central bay (CB) stations (Table 1). For flounder in early gametogenesis (August and September) the SP fish (n = 20) had significantly lower (P < 0·01) liver concentrations of Aroclor 1260 (0·34 ± 0·14 μg/g) than those at the CB stations: Berkeley (BK, n = 20, 1·6 ± 1·6 μg/g); Oakland (OK, n = 16, 2·3 ± 2·8 μg/g); and Alameda (AL, n = 4, 2·2 ± 1 μg/g). A similar pattern existed for DDT concentrations: SP = 0·2 ± 0·16 μg/g; BK = 0·1 ± 0·34 μg/g; OK = 0·4 ± 0·53 μg/g; and AL = 0·4 ± 0·33 μg/g. Total PAHs in livers were as follows: SP = 0·14 μg/g; BK = 2·6 μg/g; OK = 1·4 μg/g; and AL = 14 μg/g. Although gonad index, liver index, and presence of fin rot are inversely related to aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity, healthy fish in a similar reproductive state have lower AHH activities in the SP area. For example, in August and September, 1984, mean AHH activities were as follows: SP = 203 ± 89, and CB = 355 ± 200 pmol 3-OH-B[a]P mg microsomal protein min. We found a log-linear relationship for AHH activity and its percent inhibition by 7,8-benzoflavone (10−4m) and only a few fish from SP showed enhanced AHH activity after addition of 7,8-benzoflavone. This suggests that most of the starry flounder in San Francisco Bay are induced.  相似文献

A 1/8° global version of the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) is described with details of its formulation, implementation, and configuration of the vertical coordinate. NCOM is a baroclinic, hydrostatic, Boussinesq, free-surface ocean model that allows its vertical coordinate to consist of σ coordinates for the upper layers and z-levels below a user-specified depth. This flexibility allows implementation of a hybrid σz coordinate system that is expected to mitigate some of the weaknesses that can be associated with either pure coordinate option. For the global NCOM application, the σz coordinate is used to allow terrain-following σ coordinates in the upper ocean, providing better resolution and topographic fidelity in shelf regions where flow is most sensitive to its representation. Including z coordinates for deeper regions efficiently maintains high near-surface vertical resolution in the open ocean. Investigation into the impact of the selected coordinate system focuses on differences between atmospherically-forced free-running (no assimilation) global solutions using σz and pure z coordinates. Comparisons with independent temperature observations indicate that global NCOM using the σz coordinate has improved skill relative to its z coordinate implementation. Among other metrics, we show that in comparison with time series of surface temperature from National Oceanic Data Center (NODC) buoys, mostly located in coastal regions, root mean squared differences (RMSD) improved for 63% and correlation improved for 71% of the stations when σz coordinates were used instead of pure z. For the exclusively open-ocean Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean (TAO) buoys, differences between the simulations were small, with the σz showing smaller RMSD for 45% of the stations and higher correlation for 65% of the stations. Additional comparisons using temperature profile observations further confirm a tendency for improved performance using the hybrid σz coordinates.  相似文献

Added mass theory has been shown to give excellent agreement with experimental measurements on planing surfaces at normal planing angles [e.g. Payne, P.R. (1982, Ocean Engng9, 515–545; 1988, Design of High-Speed Boats, Volume 1: Planning. Fishergate. Inc., Annapolis, Maryland)] and to agree exactly with more complex conformal transformations where such a comparison is possible. But at large trim angles, it predicts non-transient pressures that are greater than the free-stream dynamic pressure and so cannot be correct. In this paper, I suggest that the reason is because, unlike a body or a wing in an infinite fluid, a planing plate only has fluid on one side—the “high pressure” side. So the fluid in contact with the plate travels more slowly as the plate trim angle (and therefore static pressure) increases. This results in lower added mass forces than Munk, M. (1924) The Aerodynamic Forces on Airship Hulls (NACA TR-184) and Jones, R. T. (1946) Properties of Low-Aspect-Ratio Pointed Wings at Speeds Below and Above the Speed of Sound (NACA TR-835) originally calculated for wings and other bodies in an infinite fluid. For simplicity of presentation, I have initially considered the example of a triangular (vertex forward) planning plate. This makes the integration of elemental force very simple and so the various points are made without much trouble. But the penalty is that there seem to be no experimental data for such a configuration; at least none that I have been able to discover. But at least the equations obtained in the limits of zero and infinite aspect ratio, small trim angles (τ) and τ = 90° all agree with established concepts and the variation of normal force with trim angle looks like what we would expect from our knowledge of how delta wings behave in air.I then employed the new equation to calculate the force on a rectangular planing surface at a trim angle τ, having a constant horizontal velocity uo and a vertical impact velocity of ż. This happens to have been explored experimentally by Smiley, R. F. [(1951) An Experimental Study of Water Pressure-Distributions During Landings and Planing of a Heavily Loaded Rectangular Flat Plate Model (NACA TM 2453)] up to trim angles of τ = 45°, and so a comparison between theory and experiment is possible. The results of this comparison are encouraging, as is also a comparison with the large trim angle planing plate measurements of Shuford, C. L. [(1958) A Theoretical and Experimental Study of Planing Surfaces Including Effects of Cross Section and Plan Form (NACA Report)].As two practical applications, I first employed the new equations to calculate the “design pressures” needed to size the plating of a transom bow on a high-speed “Wavestrider” hull. The resulting pressures were significantly different to those obtained using semi-empirical design rules in the literature. Then I used the theory to critically review data obtained from tank tests of a SES bow section during water impact to identify how the “real world” of resilient deck plating diverged from the “model world” of extreme structural rigidity.  相似文献

The efficacy of sodium hexametaphosphate, when added to a formalin-Rose Bengal fixative solution, in improving the efficiency of benthic sample sorting by encouraging the disaggregation of silt-clay sediment has been investigated. Samples of estuarine mud (Mdφ = 6·1) from Damhead Creek, River Medway, were used for the analysis. A significant increase (23%; p < 0·01) in sieving efficiency was found in samples treated with concentrations of 1·24g/litre or more of sodium hexametaphosphate; treatments with higher concentrations than 1·24g/litre did not improve on this performance significantly. The use of 1·24g/litre sodium hexametaphosphate in an initial fixative/preservative solution is recommended as an economic and practical means of improving the efficiency of benthic sample sorting, without deleterious effects on the animal specimens in the sample.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationships between dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition and bacterial dynamics on short time scale during spring mesotrophic (March 2003) and summer oligotrophic (June 2003) regimes, in a 0–500 m depth water column with almost no advection, at the DYFAMED site, NW Mediterranean. DOM was characterized by analyzing dissolved organic carbon (DOC), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and lipid class biotracers. Bacterial dynamic was assessed through the measurement of in situ bacterial lipase activity, abundance, production and bacterial community structure. We made the assumption that by coupling the ambient concentration of hydrolysable acyl-lipids with the measurement of their in situ bacterial hydrolysis rates (i.e. the free fatty acids release rate) would provide new insights about bacterial response to change in environmental conditions. The seasonal transition from spring to summer was accompanied by a significant accumulation of excess DOC (+5 μM) (ANOVA, p<0.05, n=8) in the upper layer (0–50 m). In this layer, the free fatty acids release rate to the bacterial carbon demand (BCD) ratio increased from 0.6±0.3 in March to 1.3±1.0 in June (ANOVA, p<0.05, n=8) showing that more uncoupling between the hydrolysis of the acyl-lipids and the BCD occurred during the evolution of the season, and that free fatty acids contributed to the excess DOC. The increase of lipolysis index and CDOM absorbance (from 0.24±0.17 to 0.39±0.13 and from 0.076±0.039 to 0.144±0.068; ANOVA, p<0.05, n=8, respectively), and the higher contribution of triglycerides, wax esters and phospholipids (from <5% to 12–31%) to the lipid pool reflected the change in the DOM quality. In addition to a strong increase of bacterial lipase activity per cell (51.4±29.4–418.3±290.6 Ag C cell−1 h−1), a significant percentage of ribotypes (39%) was different between spring and summer in the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) layer in particular, suggesting a shift in the bacterial community structure due to the different trophic conditions. At both seasons, in the chlorophyll layers, diel variations of DOM and bacterial parameters reflected a better bioavailability and/or DOM utilization by bacteria at night (the ratio of free fatty acids release rate to bacterial carbon demand decreased), most likely related to the zooplankton trophic behaviour. In mesotrophic conditions, such day/night pattern was driving changes in the bacterial community structure. In more oligotrophic period, diel variations in bacterial community structure were depth dependent in relation to the strong summer stratification.  相似文献

A numerical boundary integral equation method combined with a non-linear time stepping procedure is used for the calculation of wave forces on a large, submerged, horizontal circular cylinder. As the method is based on potential theory, all computations are performed in the inertia dominated domain, that is, for small Keulegan-Carpenter numbers. Computations are carried out for the Eulerian mean current under wave trough level equal to zero. When the cylinder is moved towards the sea bed the computations show that the inertia coefficients increase significantly, which is associated with a blockage effect. Furthermore, the effect of the wave steepness is reduced when the submergence of the cylinder is increased. In the vicinity of the free water surface the vertical inertia coefficient is highly dependent upon the wave steepness, which tends to reduce it, whereas the horizontal inertia coefficient is only slightly dependent on the wave steepness. Computations are also carried out for cylinder diameters comparable with the wave length. Finally, inertia coefficients computed by the present method are compared with some analytical results by Ogilvie [(1963), First and second order forces on a cylinder submerged under a free surface. J. Fluid Mech. 16, 451–472]. As long as the assumptions leading to Ogilvie's theory are fulfilled (cylinder radius small compared to the wave length), the results are quite similar.  相似文献

As part of a larger project on the deep benthos of the Gulf of Mexico, an extensive data set on benthic bacterial abundance (n>750), supplemented with cell-size and rate measurements, was acquired from 51 sites across a depth range of 212–3732 m on the northern continental slope and deep basin during the years 2000, 2001, and 2002. Bacterial abundance, determined by epifluorescence microscopy, was examined region-wide as a function of spatial and temporal variables, while subsets of the data were examined for sediment-based chemical or mineralogical correlates according to the availability of collaborative data sets. In the latter case, depth of oxygen penetration helped to explain bacterial depth profiles into the sediment, but only porewater DOC correlated significantly (inversely) with bacterial abundance (p<0.05, n=24). Other (positive) correlations were detected with TOC, C/N ratios, and % sand when the analysis was restricted to data from the easternmost stations (p<0.05, n=9–12). Region-wide, neither surface bacterial abundance (3.30–16.8×108 bacteria cm−3 in 0–1 cm and 4–5 cm strata) nor depth-integrated abundance (4.84–17.5×1013 bacteria m−2, 0–15 cm) could be explained by water depth, station location, sampling year, or vertical POC flux. In contrast, depth-integrated bacterial biomass, derived from measured cell sizes of 0.027–0.072 μm3, declined significantly with station depth (p<0.001, n=56). Steeper declines in biomass were observed for the cross-slope transects (when unusual topographic sites and abyssal stations were excluded). The importance of resource changes with depth was supported by the positive relationship observed between bacterial biomass and vertical POC flux, derived from measures of overlying productivity, a relationship that remained significant when depth was held constant (partial correlation analysis, p<0.05, df=50). Whole-sediment incubation experiments under simulated in situ conditions, using 3H-thymidine or 14C-amino acids, yielded low production rates (5–75 μg C m−2 d−1) and higher respiration rates (76–242 μg C m−2 d−1), with kinetics suggestive of resource limitation at abyssal depths. Compared to similarly examined deep regions of the open ocean, the semi-enclosed Gulf of Mexico (like the Arabian Sea) harbors in its abyssal sediments a greater biomass of bacteria per unit of vertically delivered POC, likely reflecting the greater input of laterally advected, often unreactive, material from its margins.  相似文献
