This contribution is a short history of the Zambian copper flower, Becium homblei (recently renamed B. centraliafricanum that has attracted attention as a plant associated with Cu-rich soils. It has a peculiar discontinuous distribution in Central Africa which has been explained in terms of biotype depletion. A field investigation into the ecology of the species shows that it is able to tolerate soil Cu concentrations of up to 15,000 μg/g (ppm), and soil nickel concentrations of nearly 5000 μg/g. B. homblei is also found on areas where soil metals are in trace quantities, and where soil bases, particularly Ca, are low. In spite of its tolerance to a wide range of edaphic conditions, the distribution of the species is very restricted in Zimbabwe, and this is almost certainly due to severe interspecific competition with a closely related species, B. obovatum, which is common on soils not unusually enriched in heavy metals. Pioneering work on geobotanical prospecting by use of Becium homblei was carried out by the late G. Woodward and others in the 1950s and 1960s. We have conducted acid–base potentiometric titrations and U(VI) sorption experiments using the Gram negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens. Results of reversed titration studies on live, inactive bacteria indicate that their pH-buffering properties result from the equilibrium ionization of three discrete populations of functional groups. Carboxyl (pKa=5.16±0.04), phosphoryl (pKa=7.22±0.15) and amine (pKa=10.04±0.67) groups most likely represent these three resolvable functionalities, based on their pKa values. Site densities for carboxyl, phosphoryl and amine groups on the bacterial surface were approximately 31.7 μmol sites/g bacteria (0.35±0.02 sites/nm2), 8.95 μmol/g (0.11±0.007 sites/nm2) and 38.0 μmol/g (0.42±0.008 sites/nm2), respectively, based on an estimated bacterial specific surface area of 55 m2/g. Sorption experiments showed that U(VI) can reversibly complex with the bacterial surface in the pH 2–8 interval, with maximum adsorption occurring at a pH of 5. Sorption is not strongly sensitive to ionic strength (NaCl) in the range 0.02–0.10 M. The pH and ionic strength dependence of U(VI) sorption onto S. putrefaciens is similar to that measured for metal-oxide surfaces and Gram positive bacteria, and appears to be similarly governed by competitive speciation constraints. Measured U(VI) sorption is accounted for by using two separate adsorption reactions forming the surface complexes >COO–UO2+ and >PO4H–UO2(OH)2. Using S. putrefaciens as a model organism for dissimilatory metal-reducing Gram negative anaerobes, our results extend the applicability of geochemical speciation models to include bacteria that are capable of reductively solubilizing or precipitating a wide variety of environmentally and geologically important metals and metallic species.  相似文献

黑龙江依兰地区蓝片岩的变质演化P-T-t轨迹   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
黑龙江省依兰地区出露了一套经高压变质形成的蓝片岩、云母片岩、长英质糜棱岩和少量超基性岩及大理岩并经历了强变形作用改造,一直被认为是佳木斯地块与其西侧松嫩地块碰撞拼贴所形成的缝合带产物。本次研究,通过岩相学与矿物化学分析,根据矿物组合的不同,识别出研究区内三种不同类型的蓝片岩;并获得了绿帘蓝闪石片岩(T=350~550℃,P=10~14kbar)、蓝闪霓辉石片岩(T=350~550℃,P=10~14kbar)和石榴石冻蓝闪石片岩(T=500~540℃,P=10~12kbar)的峰期变质温压条件。结合前人发表的地质年代学数据,建立了变质演化P-T-t轨迹。其中,绿帘蓝闪石片岩具"发卡式"变质演化P-T-t轨迹;而蓝闪霓辉石片岩与石榴石冻蓝闪石片岩具顺时针的演化轨迹。我们推测其成因可能为不同类型的蓝片岩形成于不同的俯冲阶段,由动力学机制的变化所造成。该研究成果为进一步探索佳木斯地块与松嫩地块碰撞拼贴的构造演化过程提供重要的依据。  相似文献

Since 1990, a dense network of subvertical cracks has been observed at the upper part of the Albian sands of the site of radioactive waste storage operated by ANDRA. New studies carried out in 1999 during enlargement of the site of Soulaines and in 2003 on the nearby TFA site highlighted an especially well-developed network of periglacial features that are mainly of the sand-wedge type (subvertical stratified infill). These observations demonstrate the periglacial origin of these cracks, which are mainly superimposed on a dense network of former tectonic extension joints, and that rapidly disappear at the top of the underlying clays. In addition, these observations currently represent the only example of a large sand-wedge network developed during the Last Glacial in northern France. To cite this article: P. Antoine et al., C. R. Garnet pyroxenite from high pressure granulite facies occurs with different mineral assemblages which involve garnet, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, amphibole and quartz with spinel developing as symplectite with orthopyroxene and plagioclase in large cracks. Three successive parageneses have been identified. The primary assemblage is characterised by the presence of quartz. The second assemblage involves orthopyroxene–plagioclase–hornblende symplectite, and the third assemblage is characterised by the development of spinel in symplectites with orthopyroxene and plagioclase. Using THERMOCALC (V2.7), a quantitative pseudosection in the system CaO–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O has been calculated. The assemblage involving quartz developed at high pressure, while the assemblage involving spinel developed at lower pressure. The peak of metamorphism in Tin Begane was calculated at 860 °C and 13.5 kb with aH2O=0.2. These conditions are followed by a decrease of pressure down to 4.8 kb.  相似文献

Elastic wave velocities for dense (99.8% of theoretical density) isotropic polycrystalline specimens of synthetic pyrope (Mg3Al2Si3O12) were measured to 1,000 K at 300 MPa by the phase comparison method of ultrasonic interferometry in an internally heated gas-medium apparatus. The temperature derivatives of the elastic moduli [(∂Ks/∂T) P = −19.3(4); (∂G/∂T) P = −10.4(2) MPa K−1] measured in this study are consistent with previous acoustic measurements on both synthetic polycrystalline pyrope in a DIA-type cubic anvil apparatus (Gwanmesia et al. in Phys Earth Planet Inter 155:179–190, 2006) and on a natural single crystal by the rectangular parallelepiped resonance (RPR; Suzuki and Anderson in J Phys Earth 31:125–138, 1983) method but |(∂Ks/∂T) P | is significantly larger than from a Brillouin spectroscopy study of single-crystal pyrope (Sinogeikin and Bass in Phys Earth Planet Inter 203:549–555, 2002). Alternative approaches to the retrieval of mixed derivatives of the elastic moduli from joint analysis of data from this study and from the solid-medium data of Gwanmesia et al. in Phys Earth Planet Inter 155:179–190 (2006) yield ∂2 G/∂PT = [0.07(12), 0.20(14)] × 10−3 K−1 and ∂2 K S /∂PT = [−0.20(24), 0.22(26)] × 10−3 K−1, both of order 10−4 K−1 and not significantly different from zero. More robust inference of the mixed derivatives will require solid-medium acoustic measurements of precision significantly better than 1%.  相似文献

Pleistocene faunas from south China are difficult to subdivide based on the long temporal ranges of many taxa and a reduced number of genera in comparison to faunas from temperate north China. In south China, the Ailuropoda–Stegodon fauna is a very general one and includes a relatively stable suite of genera that apparently persisted for long periods of time. These attributes have made constraining its time range difficult. Application of electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of tooth enamel constrains the ages well where uranium uptake was minor. Where uranium uptake into teeth was significant, an approach combining ESR and 230Th/234U isotopic analysis also yields excellent ages. Previous estimates of early, middle and late Pleistocene time ranges previously determined by biostratigraphic seriation for the Ailuropoda–Stegodon fauna are confirmed in all cases but are made more precise with our approach, including specific time ranges for certain archaic taxa. Absolute dating also yields an extended time range for Gigantopithecus blacki of 1200 to 310 ka.  相似文献

Migration characteristics of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in the subsurface can be expressed as a water–DNAPL two-phase system based on mainly the kSp relations, which describe the relations among relative permeability (k), degree of water saturation (S), and capillary pressure head (p). The aims of this research are to develop an experimental system with new type of probes, such as the electrical conductivity probe for measuring the degree of water saturation and the hydrophilic and hydrophobic tensiometer for measuring the pore water and DNAPL pressures, and also to estimate the results obtained from the developed experimental system. From these tests, the excellent kSp relations were obtained and the efficiency and validity of this developed experimental system have been confirmed in terms of the concept of the scaling coefficient calculated by interfacial tensions.  相似文献

While many coastal ecosystems previously supported high densities of seagrass and abundant bivalves, the impacts of overfishing, eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and habitat loss have collectively contributed to the decline of these important resources. Despite improvements in wastewater treatment in some watersheds and subsequent reduced nutrient loading to neighboring estuaries, seagrass and bivalve populations in these locations have generally not recovered. We performed three mesocosm experiments to simultaneously examine the contrasting effects of nutrient loading and historic suspension-feeding bivalve densities on the growth of eelgrass (Zostera marina), juvenile bivalves (northern quahogs, Mercenaria mercenaria; eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica; and bay scallops, Argopecten irradians), and juvenile planktivorous fish (sheepshead minnow, Cyprinodon variegatus). High nutrient loading rates led to significantly higher phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) levels in all experiments, significantly increased growth of juvenile bivalves relative to controls with lower nutrient loading rates in two experiments, and significantly reduced the growth of eelgrass in one experiment. The filtration provided by adult suspension feeders (M. mercenaria and C. virginica) significantly decreased phytoplankton levels in all experiments, significantly increased light penetration and the growth of eelgrass in one experiment, and significantly decreased the growth of juvenile bivalves and fish in two experiments, all relative to controls with no filtration from adult suspension feeders. These results demonstrate that an appropriate level of nutrient loading can have a positive effect on some estuarine resources and that bivalve filtration can mediate the effects of nutrient loading to the benefit or detriment of different estuarine resources. Future ecosystem-based approaches will need to simultaneously account for anthropogenic nutrient loading and bivalve restoration to successfully manage estuarine resources.  相似文献

The northern Tien Shan is the northern front of the Himalayan mountain belt, which resulted from the collision between the Indian and Eurasian Plates. This region encompasses the most active seismic zones of the orogen, which generated the strongest (M > 8) earthquakes. Since there are scarcely any written accounts, the only way to trace back strong earthquakes is the paleoseismologic method. Since 1984 we have been studying the northwestern Issyk Kul’ basin, where there are differently directed anticlines, which constitute the Kungei meganticline. Here, several active tectonic structures (faults, folds) are located, whose development was accompanied by strong earthquakes. Our field studies of 2008 in the Iiri-Taldybulak Valley, along the adyrs (foothills) of the Kungei-Ala-Too Range, revealed two unknown historical earthquakes. The first one, which occurred along the southern rupture in the late 7th century A.D., gave rise to a seismic scarp; the latter broke through the river floodplain and a tash-koro (ancient settlement). The second one, which occurred along the northern rupture in the late 9th century A.D., increased the height of the seismic scarp, existing on the Early Holocene and older terraces. Note that this region already records a strong seismic event around 500 A.D. Archeologic data have revealed one more strong earthquake, which took place in the 14th century A.D. Note that the above-mentioned strong seismic events are coeval with the decline of the nomadic cultures (Wusun, Turkic, Mogul) in the northern Tien Shan and Zhetysu (Semirech’e).  相似文献

We conducted a series of melting experiments in the join forsterite–diopside–leucite under 0.1 and 2.3 GPa and in the join forsterite–leucite–åkermanite under 2.3 GPa to understand paragenetic relationships amongst different types of lamproitic and lamprophyric magmas with K-rich mafic and ultramafic volcanic (kamafugitic) rocks. Both the joins were studied in the presence of excess water. The experimental results of the join forsterite–diopside–leucite at 0.1 GPa show that the five-phase point of forsterite (Fo)ss + diopside (Di)ss + leucite (Lc)ss + liquid (Liq) + vapour (V) (equivalent to ugandite lava) occurs at Fo2Di50Lc48 at 880 ± 5 °C. Phlogopite appears as the last phase at 830 ± 15 °C. The final crystalline assemblage of forsteritess + diopsidess + leucitess + phlogopite is similar to the phenocryst assemblage of missourite lava. Present study suggests that an olivine leucitite (ugandite) can be derived from an olivine italite, a slightly potassic peridotite and a leucitite magma.

A study of the join Fo–Di–Lc [P(H2O) = P(Total)] at 2.3 GPa shows that liquid compositions penetrate the primary phase volumes of forsteritess, phlogopitess, kalsilitess, K-feldsparss and diopsidess. It has the following three five-phase points: 1) one occurring at Fo9Di49Lc42 and 1005 ± 5 °C, where liquid and vapour coexists with forsteritess, phlogopitess and diopsidess (phlogopite-bearing madupite), 2) the second one at Fo4Di50Lc46 and 990 ± 10 °C, where diopsidess, K-feldsparss and phlogopitess coexist with liquid and vapour (pyroxene-bearing minette), and 3) the third one at Fo3Di21Lc76 and 775 ± 5 °C, where phlogopitess, kalsilitess and K-feldsparss are in equilibrium with liquid plus vapour (kalsilite-bearing minette).

The experimental results of the join Fo–Lc–åkermanite (Ak) show that the join 40 penetrates the primary phase volumes of forsteritess, phlogopitess, kalsilite, K-feldsparss, diopsidess and merwinitess. The data indicate the presence of four five-phase points: 1) one occurring at Fo7Lc42Ak51 and 1165 ± 5 °C, where phlogopitess, forsteritess, diopsidess coexists with liquid and vapour (olivine-bearing madupite), 2) the second one at Fo3Lc49Ak48 and 1140 ± 10 °C, where a liquid is in equilibrium with phlogopitess, K-feldsparss, diopsidess and vapour (pyroxene-bearing minette), 3) the third one at Fo18Lc21Ak61 and 1255 ± 10 °C, where merwinitess, forsteritess and diopsidess are in equilibrium with liquid and vapour (merwinite-bearing wherlite), and 4) the fourth one at Fo5Lc73.5Ak21.5 and 770 ± 5 °C, where kalsilitess, phlogopitess and K-feldspar coexist with liquid and vapour (kalsilite-bearing minette). The present data suggest that high pressure heteromorphic equivalent of a katungite magma is represented by a kalsilite-bearing minette, a pyroxene-bearing minette, or an olivine-bearing madupite.  相似文献
