The granulites of the Saxon Granulite Massif equilibrated athigh pressure and ultrahigh temperature and were exhumed inlarge part under near-isothermal decompression. This raisesthe question of whether P–T–t data on the peak metamorphismmay still be retrieved with confidence. Felsic and mafic granuliteswith geochronologically useful major and accessory phases haveprovided a basis to relate P–T estimates with isotopicages presented in a companion paper. The assemblage garnet +clinopyroxene in mafic granulite records peak temperatures of1010–1060°C, consistent with minimum estimates ofaround 967°C and 22·3 kbar obtained from the assemblagegarnet + kyanite + ternary feldspar + quartz in felsic granulite.Multiple partial overprint of these assemblages reflects a clockwiseP–T evolution. Garnet and kyanite in the felsic granulitewere successively overgrown by plagioclase, spinel + plagioclase, sapphirine + plagioclase, and biotite + plagioclase. Most ofthis overprinting occurred within the stability field of sillimanite.Garnet + clinopyroxene in the mafic granulite were replacedby clinopyroxene + amphibole + plagioclase + magnetite. Thehigh P–T conditions and the absence of thermal relaxationfeatures in these granulites require a short-lived metamorphismwith rapid exhumation. The ages of peak metamorphism (342 Ma)and shallow-level granitoid intrusions (333 Ma) constrain thetime span for the exhumation of the Saxon granulites to  相似文献

Summary ?Diffusion modeling of zoning profiles in garnet rims from mafic granulites is used to estimate cooling rates in the Proterozoic basement of Sri Lanka, which represents a small, but important fragment of the Gondwana super-continent. Metamorphic peak temperatures and pressures, estimated with two-pyroxene thermometry and garnet–clinopyroxene–plagioclase–quartz (GADS) barometry, yield 875±20 °C and 9.0±0.1 kbar. These peak metamorphic conditions are slightly higher than results obtained by garnet-biotite Fe–Mg exchange thermometry of 820±20 °C. Reset flat zoning profiles were observed in most garnets. Only narrow garnet rims touching biotite exhibit retrograde zoning in terms of Fe and Mg exchange. The garnet zoning observed requires a slow cooling history. Equilibrium was achieved along grain boundaries during or close to peak metamorphism. During subsequent cooling to lower temperatures, only local exchange between garnet and biotite occurred. A cooling rate of 1–5 °C/Ma is estimated. The estimated temperature-time history from garnet profiles is in good agreement with the cooling history inferred from mineral radiogenic ages in the literature. Here we report on the unexpected occurrence of felsic (granitic) inclusions with quench textures such as spherulite and dendrite (hereafter referred to as “felsite inclusions”), similar to some volcanic rocks, within garnet in presumably “slowly cooled” lower-crustal granulites of various geologic ages ranging from Early Proterozoic to Middle Paleozoic and wide global distribution (the Limpopo Belt, the Grenville Province, the Lützow-Holm Complex of East Antarctica, the Highland Complex of Sri Lanka, and the southern Bohemian Massif). The well-preserved textures of felsite inclusions are indicative of melts formed by anatexis during high-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism, crystallization under far-from-equilibrium conditions (at > 50 °C undercooling) and subsequent rapid cooling. The occurrence of felsite inclusions in granulites in restricted tectonostratigraphic zones in Sri Lanka, among other examples, may be the first geologic evidence for fast exhumation of lower-crustal rocks to andalusite-stable upper-crustal conditions by channel flow in a continental collision orogen. We hypothesize that granulites ascend episodically along discrete high-strain zones and cool as fast as some felsic magmas. This conclusion sheds new light on the debate regarding the deep crustal processes and necessitates changes to fundamental beliefs about exhumation rates based on rates of plate convergence (1–10 cm/year).

High‐pressure kyanite‐bearing felsic granulites in the Bashiwake area of the south Altyn Tagh (SAT) subduction–collision complex enclose mafic granulites and garnet peridotite‐hosted sapphirine‐bearing metabasites. The predominant felsic granulites are garnet + quartz + ternary feldspar (now perthite) rocks containing kyanite, plagioclase, biotite, rutile, spinel, corundum, and minor zircon and apatite. The quartz‐bearing mafic granulites contain a peak pressure assemblage of garnet + clinopyroxene + ternary feldspar (now mesoperthite) + quartz + rutile. The sapphirine‐bearing metabasites occur as mafic layers in garnet peridotite. Petrographical data suggest a peak assemblage of garnet + clinopyroxene + kyanite + rutile. Early kyanite is inferred from a symplectite of sapphirine + corundum + plagioclase ± spinel, interpreted to have formed during decompression. Garnet peridotite contains an assemblage of garnet + olivine + orthopyroxene + clinopyroxene. Thermobarometry indicates that all rock types experienced peak P–T conditions of 18.5–27.3 kbar and 870–1050 °C. A medium–high pressure granulite facies overprint (780–820 °C, 9.5–12 kbar) is defined by the formation of secondary clinopyroxene ± orthopyroxene + plagioclase at the expense of garnet and early clinopyroxene in the mafic granulites, as well as by growth of spinel and plagioclase at the expense of garnet and kyanite in the felsic granulite. SHRIMP II zircon U‐Pb geochronology yields ages of 493 ± 7 Ma (mean of 11) from the felsic granulite, 497 ± 11 Ma (mean of 11) from sapphirine‐bearing metabasite and 501 ± 16 Ma (mean of 10) from garnet peridotite. Rounded zircon morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) sector zoning, and inclusions of peak metamorphic minerals indicate these ages reflect HP/HT metamorphism. Similar ages determined for eclogites from the western segment of the SAT suggest that the same continental subduction/collision event may be responsible for HP metamorphism in both areas.

Combining Lu–Hf garnet geochronology with in situ trace element analyses in garnet allowed us to gain new insight into the metamorphic evolution of UHP–UHT rocks in the Stary Gierałtów region, in the Polish Sudetes. Prograde garnet growth recorded by Rayleigh-type heavy REE (HREE) zoning in the felsic granulites indicates that the obtained 386.6 ± 4.9 Ma Lu–Hf age represents the time of garnet crystallization on a prograde UHP metamorphic path. The surrounding rocks were metamorphosed at the same time as indicated by 381.2 ± 6.7 Ma Sm–Nd garnet age obtained for the mid-crustal metapelites. The second metamorphic episode, which affected most of the lower crust in the Orlica–Śnieżnik Massif (OSM) occurred at ca. 340 Ma as determined by U–Pb zircon and Sm–Nd garnet dating of granulites in this and previous studies is interpreted as a high temperature event, which took place on a retrograde path.

Trace element distribution in garnets from the layered granulites showed significant differences in distribution of medium and HREE in garnets from mafic and felsic protoliths over the course of the metamorphic evolution. This had strong impact on the isotopic dating results and led to “decoupling” of the Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf clocks, which recorded timing of the two different metamorphic episodes separated by as much as 40 Ma. Moreover, the preservation of the HREE growth zonation profile in garnets from the felsic granulites whose minimum metamorphic temperature was established at 900 °C implies that the Lu–Hf system under relatively dry conditions does not undergo significant diffusional re-equilibration even at such extreme temperatures and therefore it sill provides the age of prograde garnet growth. Under hydrous conditions, at least some resetting will take place, as documented by the partially relaxed HREE zonation profile in the amphibolitised mafic granulite, which yielded a 10 Ma younger age. The HREE distribution study appeared to be a particularly valuable and essential tool, which allowed us to distinguish garnet growth from post-growth complexities and hence, provide improved age interpretation. Medium REE, on the other hand, did not show any obvious correlation with the isotopic signature of garnet.

Two distinct metamorphic episodes recorded in the Stary Gierałtów region show that buoyancy-driven uplift of UHP rocks can be arrested at the base of a continental crust if not supported by any additional force. In our case study, the UHP rocks would have never reached the surface if their uplift had not been resumed after a long pause under a different tectonic regime. The multistage, discontinuous uplift revealed by the UHP rocks of the OSM provides a new scenario for the exhumation of continental crust from mantle depths distinct from the fast-track exhumation histories recognized in UHP terranes elsewhere.

This paper presents monomineral and multiphase inclusions in garnet from eclogites and clinopyroxenites, which form layers and boudins in garnet peridotites from two areas in the Moldanubian zone of the Bohemian Massif. The garnet peridotites occur in felsic granulites and reached UHP conditions prior to their granulite facies overprint. In addition to complex compositional zoning, garnets from hosting eclogites and clinopyroxenites preserve inclusions of hydrous phases and alkali silicate minerals including: amphiboles, chlorites, micas and feldspars. Amphibole, biotite and apatite inclusions in garnet have a high concentration of halogens; CO2 and sulfur are involved in carbonates and sulfide inclusions, respectively. The inclusion patterns and compositional zoning in garnet in combination with textural relations among minerals, suggest that the ultramafic and mafic bodies are derived from lithospheric mantle above the subduction zone and were transformed into garnet pyroxenites and eclogites in the subduction zone. Based on compositional, mineral and textural relations, all of these rocks along with the surrounding crustal material were overprinted by granulite facies metamorphism during their exhumation.

Xenoliths of subducted crustal origin hosted by Miocene ultrapotassicigneous rocks in the southern Pamir provide important new informationregarding the geological processes accompanying tectonism duringthe Indo-Eurasian collision. Four types have been studied: sanidineeclogites (omphacite, garnet, sanidine, quartz, biotite, kyanite),felsic granulites (garnet, quartz, sanidine and kyanite), basalticeclogites (omphacite and garnet), and a glimmerite (biotite, clinopyroxene and sanidine). Apatite, rutile and carbonate arethe most abundant minor phases. Hydrous phases (biotite andphengite in felsic granulites and basaltic eclogites, amphibolesin mafic and sanidine eclogites) and plagioclase form minorinclusions in garnet or kyanite. Solid-phase thermobarometryreveals recrystallization at mainly ultrahigh temperatures of1000–1100°C and near-ultrahigh pressures of 2·5–2·8GPa. Textures, parageneses and mineral compositions suggestderivation of the xenoliths from subducted basaltic, tonaliticand pelitic crust that experienced high-pressure dehydrationmelting, K-rich metasomatism, and solid-state re-equilibration.The timing of these processes is constrained by zircon agesfrom the xenoliths and 40Ar/39Ar ages of the host volcanic rocksto 57–11 Ma. These xenoliths reveal that deeply subductedcrust may undergo extensive dehydration-driven partial melting,density-driven differentiation and disaggregation, and sequestrationwithin the mantle. These processes may also contribute to thealkaline volcanism observed in continent-collision zones.

High-pressure (HP) granulites provide telling records of mineral reactions at upper mantle to lower crustal levels and key information on the fate of material in subduction systems. The latter especially applies when they abut eclogite and mantle dunite because such rock associations are crucial for understanding the incompletely known processes at the interface of converging plates. A continental arc, active c. 520–395 Ma ago, formed an enigmatic example of such a rock association in the Songshugou area, Qinling Orogen. To unravel the juxtaposition of the distinct rocks, this study combines petrography, phase equilibria modelling, conventional thermobarometry, and zircon U–Th–Pb–Ti–REE analysis. Two mafic HP granulites, which contain the mineral assemblages garnet–clinopyroxene–plagioclase–rutile–mesoperthite–quartz and garnet–clinopyroxene–plagioclase–rutile, experienced peak metamorphic conditions of ≤1.4 GPa, 860°C and ~1.3 GPa, ≥910°C, respectively. During decompression and cooling, at 489 ± 4 Ma, amphibole lamellae unmixed from a clinopyroxene solid solution and orthopyroxene in part replaced garnet. A felsic HP granulite shows equilibration of garnet, perthite, antiperthite, kyanite, quartz, and rutile at 810–860°C, ~1.2 GPa, sillimanite growth during decompression, and upper amphibolite facies cooling at 510 ± 4 Ma. Though the thermobarometric data are just within the methodological errors, the U/Pb zircon ages imply the HP granulites did not evolve coherently. The HP granulites either represent foundered lower arc crust or originated from subduction erosion because their geochemistry is indistinguishable from that of the hanging-wall plate. Published and new pressure–temperature–time–deformation paths converge at ~710°C, ~0.9 GPa, and ≲470 Ma, implying exhumation tectonics juxtaposed the HP granulites with a mélange of eclogite and mantle dunite at lower crustal levels. This study highlights that lower arc crust can comprise material of diverse evolution.

A temperature–time path was constructed for high-temperature low-pressure (HT–LP) migmatites of the Bayerische Wald, internal zone of the Variscan belt, Germany. The migmatites are characterised by prograde biotite dehydration melting, peak metamorphic conditions of approximately 850 °C and 0.5–0.7 GPa and retrograde melt crystallisation at 800 °C. The time-calibration of the pressure–temperature path is based on U–Pb dating of single zircon and monazite grains and titanite separates, on 40Ar/39Ar ages obtained by incremental heating experiments on hornblende separates, single grains of biotite and K-feldspar, and on 40Ar/39Ar spot fusion ages of biotite determined in situ from sample sections. Additionally, crude estimates of the duration of peak metamorphism were derived from garnet zoning patterns, suggesting that peak temperatures of 850 °C cannot have prevailed much longer than 2.5 Ma. The temperature–time paths obtained for two areas approximately 30 km apart do not differ from each other considerably. U–Pb zircon ages reflect crystallisation from melt at 850–800 °C at 323 Ma (southeastern area) and 326 Ma (northwestern area). The U–Pb ages of monazite mainly coincide with those from zircon but are complicated by variable degrees of inheritance. The preservation of inherited monazite and the presence of excess 206Pb resulting from the incorporation of excess 230Th in monazite formed during HT–LP metamorphism suggest that monazite ages in the migmatites of the Bayerische Wald reflect crystallisation from melt at 850–800 °C and persistence of older grains at these temperatures during a comparatively short thermal peak. The U–Pb ages of titanite (321 Ma) and 40Ar/39Ar ages of hornblende (322–316 Ma) and biotite (313–309 Ma) reflect cooling through the respective closure temperatures of approximately 700, 570–500 and 345–310 °C published in the literature. Most of the feldspars' ages (305–296 Ma) probably record cooling below 150–300 °C, while two grains most likely have higher closure temperatures. The temperature–time paths are characterised by a short thermal peak, by moderate average cooling rates and by a decrease in cooling rates from 100 °C/my at temperatures between 850–800 and 700 °C to 11–16 °C/my at temperatures down to 345–310 °C. Further cooling to feldspar closure for Ar was probably even slower. The lack of decompressional features, the moderate average cooling rates and the decline of cooling rates with time are not easily reconciled with a model of asthenospheric heating, rapid uplift and extension due to lithospheric delamination as proposed elsewhere. Instead, the high peak temperatures at comparatively shallow crustal levels along with the short thermal peak require external advective heating by hot mafic or ultramafic material. The Winding Stair Gap in the Central Blue Ridge province exposes granulite facies schists, gneisses, granofelses and migmatites characterized by the mineral assemblages: garnet–biotite–sillimanite–plagioclase–quartz, garnet–hornblende–biotite–plagioclase–quartz ± orthopyroxene ± clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene–biotite–quartz. Multiple textural populations of biotite, kyanite and sillimanite in pelitic schists support a polymetamorphic history characterized by an early clockwise P–T path in which dehydration melting of muscovite took place in the stability field of kyanite. Continued heating led to dehydration melting of biotite until peak conditions of 850 ± 30 °C, 9 ± 1 kbar were reached. After equilibrating at peak temperatures, the rocks underwent a stage of near isobaric cooling during which hydrous melt ± K‐feldspar were replaced by muscovite, and garnet by sillimanite + biotite + plagioclase. Most monazite crystals from a pelitic schist display patchy zoning for Th, Y and U, with some matrix crystals having as many as five compositional zones. A few monazite inclusions in garnet, as well as Y‐rich cores of some monazite matrix crystals, yield the oldest dates of c. 500 Ma, whereas a few homogeneous matrix monazites that grew in the main foliation plane yield dates of 370–330 Ma. Culling and analysis of individual spot dates for eight monazite grains yields three age populations of 509 ± 14 Ma, 438 ± 5 Ma and 360 ± 5 Ma. These data suggest that peak‐temperature metamorphism and partial melting in the central Blue Ridge occurred during the Salinic or Taconic orogeny. Following near isobaric cooling, a second weaker thermal pulse possibly related to intrusion of nearby igneous bodies resulted in growth of monazite c. 360 Ma, coinciding with the Neoacadian orogeny.

The Palghat Gap region is located near the centre of the large southern Indian granulite terrane. at the northern edge of the Kodaikanal charnockite massif. The dominant rock types in the region are hornblende-biotite ± orthopyroxene gneisses and charnockites along with minor amounts of intercalated mafic granulite, metapelite and calc-silicate. The P-T estimates from garnetiferous mafic granulites and metapelite samples are generally in the range 9-10 kbar and 800-900 C using both conventional thermobarometric methods and the TWEEQU thermobarometry program. These P-T estimates, which should be taken as minimum values, are among the highest yet reported for South Indian and Sri Lankan granulites. The occurrence of orthopyroxene + plagioclase symplectites around embayed garnet grains in the mafic granulites and cordierite rims around garnet grains in metapelite suggest an isothermal decompression-type path. Similarly, a core-rim P-T trajectory indicates c. 3 and 7 kbar decompression at high temperature in the mafic granulites and metapelite, respectively. In both rock types, the key to the determination of the retrograde P-T path was the recognition of small amounts of second generation plagioclase with a more anorthitic composition than the matrix plagioclase. The preservation of high garnet-pyroxene temperatures in the mafic granulites (despite small garnet grain size) suggests rapid cooling of the terrane. Calculated minimum cooling rates range from 8 to 80 C Ma-1. Such cooling rates are more rapid than those associated with normal isostatic processes and suggest that the terrane was tectonically exhumed at high temperature.

Ar/Ar thermochronology on 24 hornblendes, 3 biotites, 2 muscovites and 2 K-feldspars, collected along a 400 km-long NW-SE geotraverse through the Grenville Province in western Québec, is employed to provide time constraints on the intermediate and low temperature stages of cooling of part of the Grenville orogen. In the Grenville Front zone, the c. 1000 Ma time of exhumation previously established from thermobarometric and isotopic studies, is supported by the hornblende age data presented here. From 60 km to 160 km SE of the Front, reworked Archaean migmatites of the parautochthonous Réservoir Dozois terrane (RDT; 1004 Ma-old metamorphic monazites) contain hornblendes with 972– 950 Ma cooling ages. Assuming metamorphic geotherms between 25 and 30 °C km?1, calculated cooling and unroofing rates are about 6 °C Ma?1 and 0.33 km Ma?1 in the P–T range 725 °C–800 MPa and 450 °C–400 MPa. Hornblendes from monocyclic rocks of the Mont-Laurier and Morin terranes (MLT and MT; monazite ages c. 1165 Ma) give ages of about 1040 and 1010 Ma, respectively. Calculation of cooling-unroofing rates from peak metamorphic conditions in this area is hampered by thermal perturbations associated with the still poorly dated Grenville collision which took place approximately between 1060 and 1020 Ma. Cooling ages of c. 900 Ma for muscovite and biotite and 860–810 Ma for K-feldspar, show that cooling rates decreased to around 1.5 °C Ma?1 under retrograde greenschist facies conditions in the MLT. On a time vs. distance diagram, the hornblende data define several distinct age ranges, suggesting that each terrane had a characteristic thermal history. Thus, cooling was diachronous and probably non-homogeneous throughout this segment of the Grenville orogen. The time-lag between the cooling history of the parautochthon (972–950 Ma) and the allochthons (1040–1010 Ma) is compatible with an earlier (pre-1040 Ma) peak of metamorphism in the allochthons. The Réservoir Cabonga allochthon was transported toward the NNW from its probable root zone in the MLT during the 1060–1020 Ma Grenvillian collision as a partially cooled slab. The remobilization of the Archaean parautochthon is attributed to this collision. In the Grenville Front zone, slightly older cooling ages and cooling rates initially faster than in the remaining part of the parautochthon are probably as a result of rapid (tectonic?) exhumation shortly after collision. The minor delay (20–30 Ma) in unroofing of the MT compared to the adjacent MLT is most likely related to post-1040 Ma extensional displacement along the Labelle shear zone. In terranes like those described above where metamorphism is diachronous, determination of cooling rates and the history of exhumation may be meaningless without a firm control on the regional structure. However, identification of contrasting cooling histories contributes to unravelling the independent movement of terranes.

The granulites of the Fraser Range are assumed to have formed in a carbon-rich fluid, and are generally devoid of hornblende, and lack obvious hydrous retrograde features. In these granulites, pyroxene, garnet, plagioclase and quartz are the minerals most likely to retain the oxygen isotope ratios fixed at an early stage of initial granulite metamorphism. Temperature estimates using these minerals commonly suggest that oxygen isotopic exchange ceased in the range 600 to 680°C. The peak metamorphic temperature was probably ~ 850°C as based on the stability fields of the coexisting minerals and some cation temperatures from coexisting pyroxenes in these rocks. Ilmenite may be slightly out of isotopic equilibrium with the other minerals. Thus, grains of quartz, feldspar, pyroxene and ilmenite have suffered considerable oxygen isotopic exchange during the retrogressive phase of the metamorphism, in spite of the fact that very little water was present in these granulites. The observed deviation from the peak metamorphic temperatures can be explained by essentially closed system solid-state diffusion (on at least a scale of centimetres) during slow cooling of the rocks from ~850 to 650°C, followed by more rapid cooling down to ~ 300°C. Such an explanation is not at variance with the radiometric data available for rocks from the area, which suggest that the latter phase could have involved uplift rates of ?0.5 mm/yr for a period of about 40 Ma. Wholerock δ18O values on non-quartzose mafic granulites, about 7.2%., fall within the range of basalts affected by seafloor weathering.

Abstract Finite difference models of Fe-Mg diffusion in garnet undergoing cooling from metamorphic peak conditions are used to infer the significance of temperatures calculated using garnet-biotite Fe-Mg exchange thermometry. For rocks cooled from high grades where the garnet was initially homogeneous, the calculated temperature (Tcalc) using garnet core and matrix biotite depends on the size of the garnet, the ratio of garnet to biotite in the rock (Vgarnet/Vbiotite) and the cooling rate. For garnets with radii of 1 mm and Vgarnet/Vbiotite<1, Tcalc is 633, 700 and 777°C for cooling rates of 1, 10 and 100°C/Ma. For Vgarnet/Vbiotite= 1 and 4 and a cooling rate of 10° C/Ma, Tcalc is approximately 660 and 610° C, respectively. Smaller and larger garnets have lower and higher Tcalc, respectively. These results suggest that peak metamorphic temperatures may be reliably attained from rocks crystallized at conditions below Tcalc of the garnet core, provided that Vgarnet/Vbiotite is sufficiently small (<0.1) and that the composition of the biotite at the metamorphic peak has not been altered during cooling. Numerical experiments on amphibolite facies garnets with nominal peak temperatures of 550–600° C generate a ‘well’in Fe/(Fe + Mg) near the rim during cooling. Maximum calculated temperatures for the assemblage garnet + chlorite + biotite + muscovite + plagioclase + quartz using the Fe/(Fe + Mg) at the bottom of the ‘well’with matrix biotite range from 23–43° C to 5–12° C below the peak metamorphic temperature for cooling rates of 1 and 100° C/Ma, respectively. Maximum calculated temperatures for the assemblage garnet + staurolite + biotite + muscovite + plagioclase + quartz are approximately 70° C below the peak metamorphic temperature and are not strongly dependent on cooling rate. The results of this study indicate that it may be very difficult to calculate peak metamorphic temperatures using garnet-biotite Fe-Mg exchange thermometry on amphibolite facies rocks (Tmax > 550° C) because the rim composition of the garnet, which is required to calculate the peak temperature, is that most easily destroyed by diffusion.

Paleoproterozoic granulite facies rocks are widely distributed in the North China Craton (NCC). The Huai'an terrane, located within the northern segment of the Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO), a major Paleoproterozoic collisional belt in the central NCC expose mafic and pelitic granulites as well as TTG (tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite) gneisses. Here we investigate the pelitic granulites from this complex and identify four distinct mineral assemblages corresponding to different metamorphic stages. The prograde metamorphism (M1) is recorded by relict biotite and the compositional profile of Xca (grt) isopleths. The Pmax (M2) is distinguished by the Xca (grt) isopleths, which corresponds to the kyanite stable area with an inclusion mineral assemblage of Grt-c–(Ky)-Qz-Rt-Kfs-liq suggesting that the pressures were higher than 12 kbar with a temperature below 900 °C. However, kyanite is absent in thin sections suggesting its consumption during later stages. The Tmax metamorphism (M3) is characterized by the assemblage: Grt-m-Qz-Pl-Rt-Kfs-Sil-liq in the garnet mantle and also reflected in the compositional profile. Two-feldspar geothermometry yields a P-T range of 940 °C–950 °C and 9.5–10.5 kbar, indicating ultra-high temperature (UHT) metamorphic overprinting. The subsequent retrograde metamorphic stage (M4) is characterized by Grt-r-Bt-Sil-Kfs-Pl-Qz ± Rt ± Ilm with symplectites of Bt-Sil-Qz in the garnet rim suggesting garnet breakdown with P-T conditions estimated as 770 °C–840 °C and 6.5–8 kbar. The pelitic granulites show a clockwise path, with P-T estimates higher than those in estimated in previous studies using conventional techniques.LA-ICP-MS U–Pb analysis of metamorphic zircon grains yield two groups of ages at 1972.9 ± 8.1 Ma and 1873.3 ± 9.9 Ma. We suggest that the protoliths of the Manjinggou HP-UHT granulites were deep subducted where they experienced HP metamorphism associated with the collision of the Ordos and Yinshan blocks at ca. 1.97 Ga. Subsequently, the UHT metamorphic overprint occurred during the assembly of the unified Western and Eastern Blocks of the NCC along the TNCO at ca. 1.87 Ga.

Controversy over the plate tectonic affinity and evolution of the Saxon granulites in a two‐ or multi‐plate setting during inter‐ or intracontinental collision makes the Saxon Granulite Massif a key area for the understanding of the Palaeozoic Variscan orogeny. The massif is a large dome structure in which tectonic slivers of metapelite and metaophiolite units occur along a shear zone separating a diapir‐like body of high‐P granulite below from low‐P metasedimentary rocks above. Each of the upper structural units records a different metamorphic evolution until its assembly with the exhuming granulite body. New age and petrologic data suggest that the metaophiolites developed from early Cambrian protoliths during high‐P amphibolite facies metamorphism in the mid‐ to late‐Devonian and thermal overprinting by the exhuming hot granulite body in the early Carboniferous. A correlation of new Ar–Ar biotite ages with published PTt data for the granulites implies that exhumation and cooling of the granulite body occurred at average rates of ~8 mm/year and ~80°C/Ma, with a drop in exhumation rate from ~20 to ~2.5 mm/year and a slight rise in cooling rate between early and late stages of exhumation. A time lag of c. 2 Ma between cooling through the closure temperatures for argon diffusion in hornblende and biotite indicates a cooling rate of 90°C/Ma when all units had assembled into the massif. A two‐plate model of the Variscan orogeny in which the above evolution is related to a short‐lived intra‐Gondwana subduction zone conflicts with the oceanic affinity of the metaophiolites and the timescale of c. 50 Ma for the metamorphism. Alternative models focusing on the internal Variscan belt assume distinctly different material paths through the lower or upper crust for strikingly similar granulite massifs. An earlier proposed model of bilateral subduction below the internal Variscan belt may solve this problem.

Biotite‐rich selvedges developed between mafic schollen and semipelitic diatexite in migmatites at Lac Kénogami in the Grenville Province of Quebec. Mineral equilibria modelling indicates that partial melting occurred in the mid‐crust (4.8–5.8 kbar) in the range 820–850°C. The field relations, petrography, mineral chemistry and whole‐rock composition of selvedges along with their adjacent mafic schollen and host migmatites are documented for the first time. The selvedges measured in the field are relatively uniform in width (~1 cm wide) irrespective of the shape or size of their mafic scholle. In thin section, the petrographic boundary between mafic scholle and selvedge is defined by the appearance of biotite and the boundary between selvedge and diatexite by the change in microstructure for biotite, garnet, plagioclase and quartz. Three subtypes of selvedges are identified according to mineral assemblage and microstructure. Subtype I have orthopyroxene but of different microstructure and Mg# to orthopyroxene in the mafic scholle; subtype II contain garnet with many mineral inclusions, especially of ilmenite, in contrast to garnet in the diatexite host which has few inclusions; subtype III lack orthopyroxene or garnet, but has abundant apatite. Profiles showing the change in plagioclase composition from the mafic schollen across the selvedge and into the diatexite show that each subtype of selvedge has a characteristic pattern. Four types of biotite are identified in the selvedges and host diatexite based on their microstructural characteristics. (a) Residual biotite forms small rounded red‐brown grains, mostly as inclusions in peritectic cordierite and garnet in diatexite; (b) selvedge biotite forms tabular subhedral grains with high respect ratio; (c) diatexite biotite forms tabular subhedral grains common in the matrix of the diatexite; and (d) retrograde biotite that partially replaces peritectic cordierite and garnet in the diatexite. The four groups of biotite are also discriminated by their major element (EMPA) and trace elements (LA‐Q‐ICP‐MS) compositions. Residual biotite is high in TiO2 and low in Sc and S, whereas retrograde biotite has high Al2O3, but low Sc and Cr. Selvedge and diatexite biotite are generally very similar, but selvedge biotite has higher Sc and S contents. Whole‐rock compositional profiles across the selvedges constructed from micro‐XRF and LA‐Q‐ICP‐MS analyses show: (a) Al2O3, FeO, MgO and CaO all decrease from mafic scholle across the selvedge and into the diatexite; (b) Na2O is lowest in the mafic scholle, rises through the selvedge and reaches its maximum about 20–30 mm into the diatexite host; (c) K2O is lowest in the mafic scholle and reaches its highest value in the first half of the selvedge, then declines before reaching a higher, but intermediate value, about 20 mm into the diatexite. Of the trace elements, Cs and Rb show distributions very similar to K2O.

Rocks from the Valhalla metamorphic core complex, British Columbia,Canada, have experienced granulite facies metamorphism at conditionsof 82030C, 81 kbar. Peak metamorphism was accompanied bydehydration melting of muscovite, but not biotite, followedby minor back reaction of garnet $ K-feldspar $ H20= sillimanite$ biotite$plagioclase. At conditions very near those of thepeak, extensive shearing produced s-c (schistositS-cisaillement)fabrics, ribbon quartz and grain size reduction of garnet atseveral locations. Gamet-biotite Fe-Mg exchange thermometryyields temperatures that range from 580 to 1051C Low temperaturesare calculated from biotite modified dominantly by Fe–Mgexchange with garnet; high temperatures are calculated fromFerich biotites produced from the above retrograde reaction.Geothermometry is useless in these rocks to estimate peak temperaturea priori, but is very useful to help constrain the complex reactionhistory of biotites. Geochronology on monazite, zircon, allanite, titanite, hornblende, muscovite, biotite and apatite has beenused to constrain the timing of the metamorphic peak at 67–72Ma and the average cooling rate to 24 6C/Ma. Diffusion modelingof Fe–Mg exchange between biotite inclusions and hostgarnet yields cooling rates of either 3–80C/Ma or 200–2500C/Ma, depending on the choice of diffusion coefficients. Theformer value is consistent with the average cooling rate of24 C/Ma for the complex determined from geochronology, butthe faster rate cannot be ruled out and may indicate initialvery rapid cooling by thrusting of the complex onto cooler basementIt is suggested that cooling rates determined from geochronologicvs petrologic methods may not be directly comparable becausepetrologic methods sample near-peak nutamorphic cooling rateswhereas geochronologic methods sample post-peak to ambient coolingrates.
