An updated period analysis for the overcontact eclipsing binary ER Orionis is presented. Featured is an improved derivation of parameters for the light time effect (LTE) due to the third star (in actuality, a pair of stars) utilising the latest set of eclipse timings. The very good fit between the eclipse timing differences (ETD) plot (otherwise known as an O–C diagram) and the theoretical ETD curve makes possible an improved determination of the rate of mass interchange between the binary pair, dm1/dt = +1.83(6) × 10−7 Mʘ/year. In addition, the mass of the companion system (in actuality, m3 sin i) and the elements of its orbit were computed. A suggestion is made for a method of future determination of the inclination of the orbit of the companion system.  相似文献

We present new photometric observations for the eclipsing binary DF CVn, and determined five light minimum times. By using the Wilson–Devinney code, two sets of photometric solutions were deduced from our observations in 2009. The asymmetric light curves obtained on 2009 March 5 were modeled by a dark spot on the more massive component. The results indicate that DF CVn is a W-type weak-contact binary, with a mass ratio of q  0.28 and an overcontact degree of f  20%. From the O ? C curve of minimum times, it is found that there exists a cyclic variation, whose period and semi-amplitude are P3 = 17.2(±0.9) year and A = 0.d0070(±0.d0008), respectively. This kind of cyclic oscillation may possibly result from the light-time effect due to the presence of an unseen third body. This kind of additional body may extract angular momentum from the central system. The low-amplitude changes of the light curves on a short-time scale (e.g., half a month) may be attributed to the dark spot activity, which may result in angular momentum loss via magnetic breaking. With angular momentum loss, the weak-contact binary DF CVn will evolve into a deep-contact configuration.  相似文献

Orbital period variations of two chromospherically active binary systems, RT CrB and PW Her, are presented. It is shown that the orbital period of RT CrB undergoes a cyclic oscillation with a period of 53.9 years. For PW Her, an alternate change, with a period of 42.7 years, is found to superimpose on a rapid secular increase (dP/dt=+3.53×10−6 days/year). If the period oscillations of those two systems are caused by the light-time effect of a third body, the analysis for RT CrB indicates that the third body would be a low-mass main-sequence star, while, for PW Her, the mass of the third body should be no less than 7.8 M. Since no spectral lines of the third body were seen in PW Her from the spectroscopic study by Popper [AJ 100 (1990) 247], if there is a third body in the system, it can only be a black hole. However, as both components in the two binary stars were showing strong chromospheric activity, the alternate period variations are more plausibly explained as the result of magnetic activity cycles. No secular period changes of RT CrB are found, which is in agreement with the detached evolved configuration of the system. The long-term period increase of PW Her may indicate that it is on an active phase of mass transfer (dm/dt=2.17×10−6 M/year).  相似文献

We obtained multi-colour light curves of the overcontact binary system HH Boo and analysed the orbital period variation of the system. Our analysis tentatively indicates either mass transfer from the secondary to the primary or mass loss from the system at a rate of -5.04 × 10−7 M per year. Through a combined analysis of the published radial velocity curve and light curves, we determined an inclination (i) of 69°.71 ± 0°.16 and a semi-major axis (a) of 2.246 ± 0.064 R for HH Boo. The masses of the primary and secondary components were found to be 0.92 ± 0.08 M and 0.58 ± 0.06 M, respectively. The radius determined for the primary was 0.98 ± 0.03 R, while that determined for the secondary was 0.80 ± 0.02 R. We demonstrated that HH Boo is most likely a member of the A-type subclass of W UMa binaries.  相似文献

We present a multicolor photometry for the eclipsing binary WY Hydrae, observed on four nights of 2008 December. From our new observations and Carr’s data, the photometric solutions were deduced by using the updated W–D program. The results show that WY Hya is a detached binary with a mass ratio of q = 0.970(±0.005).By analyzing the OC curve, it is found that there exists either a continuous period increase or a cyclic variation. From Eq. (2), the orbital period of WY Hya secularly increases at a rate of dP/dt = +3.56(±0.37) × 10?7 days/yr, which may be interpreted by some mass transfer for the near-contact configuration or tidal dissipation. From Eq. (3), the period and semi-amplitude of the periodic oscillation are P3 = 95.4(±4.2) yr and A = 0d.0087(±0d.0003), respectively. This may be likely attributed by light-time effect via the presence of the assumed third body. Assumed in the coplanar orbit with the binary, the mass of the third body should be M3 = 0.18 M. If the unseen additional companion exists, it will extract angular momentum from the binary system. Finally, WY Hya with high fill-out factors (i.e., f1,2 > 80%), may evolve into a semi-detached configuration.  相似文献

We obtained complete V and Rc light curves of the eclipsing binary V380 Gem in 2012. With our data we were able to determine six new times of minimum light and refine the orbital period of the system to 0.3366088 days. The 2003 version of the Wilson–Devinney code was used to analyze the light curves in the V and Rc bands simultaneously. It is shown that V380 Gem may be classified as an W-type W Ursae Majoris system with a high mass ratio q = 1.45, a degree of contact f = 10.6% the same temperature for both the components (ΔT = 10 K) and an orbital inclination of i  = 81.5°. Our observations show symmetric light curves in all passbands with brightness in both maxima at the same level. The absolute dimensions of V380 Gem are estimated and its dynamical evolution is inferred.  相似文献

We present new B- and V-band photometry of the W UMa-type binary system QX And, which is a member of the open cluster NGC 752. Revised orbital period and new ephemerides were given for the binary system based on the data of times of light minima. The result of a period analysis reveals that the system is undergoing a continuous orbital period increase during the past decades. The rate of period increasing turns out to be about 2.7 × 10?7 d yr?1. With the Wilson–Devinney code, a photometric solution is computed. It yields a contact configuration for the system with a filling factor of 0.361. Combining the results from the photometric solution along with that from the radial-velocity observations, we have determined the absolute parameters for the two components of the system. The masses, radii and luminosity of the primary and secondary stars are calculated as 1.43 ± 0.04 M, 1.45 ± 0.09 R, 2.87 ± 0.40 L and 0.44 ± 0.02 M, 0.87 ± 0.05 R, 0.99 ± 0.13 L, respectively. The evolutionary status and physical nature of the contact binary system were discussed compared with the theoretical models.  相似文献

This paper presents new CCD Bessell BVRI light curves and photometric analysis of the Algol-type binary star TX Her. The CCD observations were carried out at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Observatory in 2010. New BVRI light curves from this study and radial velocity curves from Popper (1970) were solved simultaneously using modern light and radial velocity curves synthesis methods. The general results show that TX Her is a well-detached eclipsing binary, however, both component stars fill at least half of their Roche lobes. A significant third light contribution to the total light of the system could not be determined. Using OC residuals formed by the updated minima times, an orbital period study of the system was performed. It was confirmed that the tilted sinusoidal OC variation corresponds to an apparent period variation caused by the light travel time effect due to an unseen third body. The following absolute parameters of the components were derived: M1 = 1.62 ± 0.04 M, M2 = 1.45 ± 0.03 M, R1 = 1.69 ± 0.03 R, R2 = 1.43 ± 0.03 R, L1 = 8.21 ± 0.90 L and L2 = 3.64 ± 0.60 L. The distance to TX Her was calculated as 155 ± 10 pc, taking into account interstellar extinction. The position of the components of TX Her in the HR diagram are also discussed. The components are young stars with an age of ~500 Myr.  相似文献

We suggest that planets, brown dwarfs, and even low mass stars can be formed by fragmentation of protoplanetary disks around very massive stars (M ? 100 M). We discuss how fragmentation conditions make the formation of very massive planetary systems around very massive stars favorable. Such planetary systems are likely to be composed of brown dwarfs and low mass stars of ~0.1–0.3 M, at orbital separations of ~ few × 100–104 AU. In particular, scaling from solar-like stars suggests that hundreds of Mercury-like planets might orbit very massive stars at ~103 AU where conditions might favor liquid water. Such fragmentation objects can be excellent targets for the James Webb Space Telescope and other large telescopes working in the IR bands. We predict that deep observations of very massive stars would reveal these fragmentation objects, orbiting in the same orbital plane in cases where there are more than one object.  相似文献

We report sensitive Chandra X-ray non-detections of two unusual, luminous Iron Low-Ionization Broad Absorption Line Quasars (FeLoBALs). The observations do detect a non-BAL, wide-binary companion quasar to one of the FeLoBAL quasars. We combine X-ray-derived column density lower limits (assuming solar metallicity) with column densities measured from ultraviolet spectra and CLOUDY photoionization simulations to explore whether constant-density slabs at broad-line region densities can match the physical parameters of these two BAL outflows, and find that they cannot. In the “overlapping-trough” object SDSS J0300+0048, we measure the column density of the X-ray absorbing gas to be NH ? 1.8 × 1024 cm?2. From the presence of Fe ii UV78 absorption but lack of Fe ii UV195/UV196 absorption, we infer the density in that part of the absorbing region to be ne ? 106 cm?3. We do find that a slab of gas at that density might be able to explain this object’s absorption. In the Fe iii-dominant object SDSS J2215–0045, the X-ray absorbing column density of NH ? 3.4 × 1024 cm?2 is consistent with the Fe iii-derived NH ? 2 × 1022 cm?2 provided the ionization parameter is log U > 1.0 for both the ne = 1011 cm?3 and ne = 1012 cm?3 scenarios considered (such densities are required to produce Fe iii absorption without Fe iiabsorption). However, the velocity width of the absorption rules out its being concentrated in a single slab at these densities. Instead, this object’s spectrum can be explained by a low density, high ionization and high temperature disk wind that encounters and ablates higher density, lower ionization Fe iii-emitting clumps.  相似文献

The reflex motion of a star induced by a planetary companion is too small to detect by photographic astrometry. The apparent discovery in the 1960s of planetary systems around certain nearby stars, in particular Barnard’s star, turned out to be spurious. Conventional stellar radial velocities determined from photographic spectra at that time were also too inaccurate to detect the expected reflex velocity changes. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the introduction of solid-state, signal-generating detectors and absorption cells to impose wavelength fiducials directly on the starlight, reduced radial velocity errors to the point where such a search became feasible. Beginning in 1980, our team from UBC introduced an absorption cell of hydrogen fluoride gas in front of the CFHT coudé spectrograph and, for 12 years, monitored the radial velocities of some 29 solar-type stars. Since it was assumed that extra-solar planets would most likely resemble Jupiter in mass and orbit, we were awarded only three or four two-night observing runs each year. Our survey highlighted three potential planet hosting stars, γ Cep (K1 IV), β Gem (K0 III), and ? Eri (K2 V). The putative planets all resembled Jovian systems with periods and masses of: 2.5 years and 1.4 MJ, 1.6 years and 2.6 MJ, and 6.9 years and 0.9 MJ, respectively. All three were subsequently confirmed from more extensive data by the Texas group led by Cochran and Hatzes who also derived the currently accepted orbital elements.None of these three systems is simple. All five giant stars and the supergiant in our survey proved to be intrinsic velocity variables. When we first drew attention to a possible planetary companion to γ Cep in 1988 it was classified as a giant, and there was the possibility that its radial velocity variations and those of β Gem (K0 III) were intrinsic to the stars. A further complication for γ Cep was the presence of an unseen secondary star in an orbit with a period initially estimated at some 30 years. The implication was that the planetary orbit might not be stable, and a Jovian planet surviving so close to a giant then seemed improbable. Later observations by others showed the stellar binary period was closer to 67 years, the primary was only a sub-giant and a weak, apparently synchronous chromospheric variation disappeared. Chromospheric activity was considered important because κ1 Cet, one of our program stars, showed a significant correlation of its radial velocity curve with chromospheric activity.? Eri is a young, magnetically active star with spots making it a noisy target for radial velocities. While the signature of a highly elliptical orbit (e = 0.6) has persisted for more than three planetary orbits, some feel that even more extensive coverage is needed to confirm the identification despite an apparent complementary astrometric acceleration detected with the Hubble Space Telescope. We confined our initial analyses of the program stars to looking for circular orbits. In retrospect, it appears that some 10% of our sample did in fact have Jovian planetary companions in orbits with periods of years.  相似文献

This study presents the absolute parameters of the contact binary system V376 And. CCD photometric observations were made at the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Observatory in 2004. The instrumental magnitudes of all observed stars were converted into standard magnitudes. New BV light curves of the system were analysed using the Wilson–Devinney method supplemented with a Monte Carlo type algorithm. Since there are large asymmetries between maxima (i.e., O’Connell effect) in these light curves, two different models (one with a cool spot and one with a hot spot) were applied to the photometric data. The best fit, which was obtained with a large hot spot on the secondary component, gives V376 And as an A sub-type contact binary in poor thermal contact and a small value of the filling factor (f  0.07). Combining the solutions of our light curves and Rucinski et al. (2001)’s radial velocity curves, the following absolute parameters of the components were determined: M1 = 2.44 ± 0.04 M, M2 = 0.74 ± 0.03 M, R1 = 2.60 ± 0.03 R, R2 = 1.51 ± 0.02 R, L1 = 40 ± 4 L and L2 = 5 ± 1 L. We also discuss the evolution of the system, which appears to have an age of 1.6 Gyr. The distance to V376 And was calculated as 230 ± 20 pc from this analysis, taking into account interstellar extinction.  相似文献

We point out that although conventional stars are primarily fed by burning of nuclear fuel at their cores, in a strict sense, the process of release of stored gravitational energy, known as, Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) process is either also operational albeit at an arbitrary slow rate, or lying in wait to take over at the disruption of the nuclear channel. In fact, the latter mode of energy release is the true feature of any self-gravity bound object including stars. We also highlight the almost forgotten fact that Eddington was the first physicist to introduce special relativity into the problem and correctly insist that, actually, total energy stored in a star is not the mere Newtonian energy but the total mass energy (E = Mc2). Accordingly, Eddington defined an “Einstein time scale” of Evolution where the maximum age of the Sun turned out to be tE  1.4 × 1013 yr. This concept has a fundamental importance though we know now that Sun in its present form cannot survive for more than 10 billion years. We extend this concept by introducing general relativity and show that the minimum value of depletion of total mass–energy is tE = ∞ not only for Sun but for and sufficiently massive or dense object. We propose that this time scale be known in the name of “Einstein–Eddington”. We also point out that, recently, it has been shown that as massive stars undergo continued collapse to become a Black Hole, first they become extremely relativistic radiation pressure supported stars. And the life time of such relativistic radiation pressure supported compact stars is indeed dictated by this Einstein–Eddington time scale whose concept is formally developed here. Since this observed time scale of this radiation pressure supported quasistatic state turns out to be infinite, such objects are called eternally collapsing objects (ECO). Further since ECOs are expected to have strong intrinsic magnetic field, they are also known as “Magnetospheric ECO” or MECO.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of emission lines of carbon-like silicon reveals that some ratios of n = 3  2 line intensities are sensitive to the electron density, ne. The ratio between two groups of 3d  2p transition lines of 55.246 Å and 55.346 Å provides a good diagnostic of ne because of the combined characteristic of sensitivity to electron density and relative insensitivity to temperature. From this ratio, a lower limit of the electron density of 0.6 × 108 cm−3 was set for Procyon, which is consistent with the values constrained by C V and Si X emission lines. Significant discrepancies were found between theoretical predictions and observations for the 3s  2p lines relative to 3d  2p lines in Procyon, recently measured using the Chandra high-resolution transmission grating instrument. The difference of more than a factor of 3, cannot be explained by uncertainties of atomic data. Ness and co-workers also suggested that the effect of opacity appeared not to be a major factor for the discrepancy. For the 3s  2p line at 61.611 Å, present work indicates that the large discrepancy may be from the contamination of a S VIII line at 61.645 Å. For lines at 61.702 and 61.846 Å, we suggest that the discrepancies may be attributed to contaminations by currently yet-unknown spectral lines.  相似文献

We present a new set of CCD photometric observations for the short period eclipsing binary 1SWASP J1743 (= V1067 Her). We have determined the available times of light minima and two new linear and quadratic ephemerides have been obtained. The photometric solutions for the system have been performed using Wilson and Devinney Code. The 3D and fill out configuration revealed that V1067 Her is an over contact W UMa binary with relatively low fill-out factor of about 16%.We investigated the period variation for the system. It showed a strong evidence of period changes by using the (O-C) residual diagram method and we have concluded long-term orbital period decrease rate dP/dt= −3.0 × 107 d/yr, corresponding to a time scale 8.6 × 105 yr. Such period decrease in the A-type W UMa systems is usually interpreted to be due to mass transfer from the more to the less massive component.  相似文献

Using reliable trigonometric measurements, we find that the absolute magnitude of cataclysmic variables depends on the orbital period and de-reddened (J  H)0 and (H  K s)0 colours of 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) photometric system. The calibration equation covers the ranges 0.032d < Porb  0.454d, −0.08 < (J  H)0  1.54, −0.03 < (H  Ks)0  0.56 and 2.0 < MJ < 11.7; It is based on trigonometric parallaxes with relative errors of (σπ/π)  0.4. By using the period-luminosity-colours (PLCs) relation, we estimated the distances of cataclysmic variables with orbital periods and 2MASS observations and compared them with distances found from other methods. We suggest that the PLCs relation can be a useful statistical tool to estimate the distances of cataclysmic variables.  相似文献

We present the Galactic model parameters for thin disc estimated by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data of 14 940 stars with apparent magnitudes 16 < g0  21 in six intermediate latitude fields in the first Galactic quadrant. Star/galaxy separation was performed by using the SDSS photometric pipeline and the isodensity contours in the (g  r)0  (r  i)0 two colour diagram. The separation of thin disc stars is carried out by the bimodal distribution of stars in the (g  r)0 histogram, and the absolute magnitudes were evaluated by a procedure presented in the literature (Bilir, S., Karaali, S., Tunçel, S. 2005. AN 326, 321). Exponential density law fits better to the derived density functions for the absolute magnitude intervals 8 < M(g)  9 and 11 < M(g)  12, whereas sech/sech2 laws are more appropriate for absolute magnitude intervals 9 < M(g)  10 and 10 < M(g)  11. We showed that the scaleheight and scalelength are Galactic longitude dependent. The average values and ranges of the scaleheight and the scalelength are 〈H = 220 pc (196  H  234 pc) and 〈H = 1900 pc (1561  h  2280 pc) respectively. This result would be useful to explain different numerical values claimed for those parameters obtained by different authors for the fields in different directions of the Galaxy.  相似文献

V381 Cas is a relatively bright and early-type eclipsing binary system. Several new times of its eclipses were measured as part of our long-term observational project of eccentric eclipsing binaries. Based on a current OC diagram solution, we found for the first time that its orbit is slightly eccentric (e = 0.025) and shows a very rapid apsidal advance with short period of about 20 years only. The relativistic and third body effects are negligible, being about 3% of the total apsidal motion rate.  相似文献

We present V- and R- band time-series CCD photometry of two contact binaries in the region of the young open cluster NGC 957. The two eclipsing binaries were discovered by Bukowiecki et al., 2009. OEJV 112, 1 and named as V4 and V5, respectively. In the present paper, the first detailed studies of the two contact binary systems are carried out. Firstly, based on the light curves, 28 times of minimum light were detected for V4 and 21 times of minimum light for V5, respectively. Secondly, the orbital periods of V4 and V5 were redetermined as PV4 = 0.40032(5) days and PV5 = 0.30752 (4)days, respectively. The photometric solutions were analyzed by using Wilson Decinny Code. The results reveal that both V4 and V5 are W UMa-type contact binaries with a degree of fV4 = 31(± 1)% and fV5 = 65(± 1)%. The mass ratios were determined to be qV4 = 0.30 and qV5 = 0.19. For V5, the well known O’Connell effect was detected in the dataset, which effect can be explained by employing a dark spot placed on the more massive primary component. Finally, based on the distances of the two contact binaries, which were calculated by using an relation given by Gettel et al., the two contact binaries are judged to be foreground stars in the open cluster NGC 957.  相似文献
