One-hundred fifty-six large-scale enhancements of X-ray emission from solar active regions were studied on full-disk filterheliograms to determine characteristic morphology and expansion rates for heated coronal plasma. The X-ray photographs were compared with H observations of flares, sudden filament disappearances, sprays and loop prominence systems (LPS). Eighty-one percent of the X-ray events were correlated with H filament activity, but only forty-four percent were correlated with reported H flares. The X-ray enhancements took the form of loops or arcades of loops ranging in length from 60 000 km to 520 000 km and averaging 15 000 km in width. Lifetimes ranged from 3 hr to >24 hr. Event frequency was 1.4 per day. X-ray loop arcades evolved from sharp-edged clouds in cavities vacated by rising H filaments. Expansion velocities of the loops were 50 km s-1 immediately after excitation and 1–10 km s-1 several hours later. These long-lived loop arcades are identified with LPS, and it is suggested that the loops outlined magnetic fields which were reconnecting after filament eruptions. Another class of X-ray enhanced loops stretched outside active regions and accompanied sprays or lateral filament ejections. H brightenings occurred where these loops intersected the chromosphere. Inferred excitation velocities along the loops ranged between 300 and 1200 km s-1. It is suggested that these loops outlined closed magnetic fields guiding slow mode shocks from flares and filament eruptions.  相似文献

The relationship between H absorption features, type III radio bursts and soft X-ray emission has been examined in order to determine the characteristics of the particle acceleration process operating when a H-flare may not be detectable. It is found that transient H activity observed in the absence of reported flares is associated with production of relatively weak type III radio and soft X-ray emission. Since such optical phenomena are much more frequent than flares themselves, it is concluded that instabilities generating fast particles may be produced in the corona in a quasi-continuous way with coincident perturbations in the lower solar atmosphere. The soft X-ray component, which is similar to the precursor in flares, is not necessarily the direct product of fast particles, but is probably associated with some type of heating since both the soft X-ray emission and the H features exhibit a similar evolution, the type III bursts occurring near the maximum of this perturbation. The observations are consistent with a model in which the electron acceleration region is located at an altitude where the ion density is 109 cm–3 and most of the accelerated electrons( 20 keV) are confined to coronal altitudes where the ion density is 1010 cm–3.  相似文献

This investigation shows that statistically there are significant time delays between H and hard X-ray (HXR) emissions during solar flares; most impulsive flares produce HXR emissions up to 1 min before and up to 2 min after the onset of H emission. HXR emissions are also found to be peaked up to 2 min before the H emissions.  相似文献

I have studied a number of flares for which good X-ray and optical data were available. An average lag of 5.5 s between hard X-ray (HXR) start and H start, and HXR peak and Ha peak was found for 41 flares for which determination was possible. Allowing for time constants the time lag is zero. The peak H lasts until 5–6 keV soft X-ray (SXR) peak. The level of H intensity is determined by the SXR flux.Multiple spikes in HXR appear to correspond to different occurrences in the flare development. Flares with HXR always have a fast H rise. Several flares were observed in the 3835 band; such emission appears when the 5.1–6.6 keV flux exceeds 5 × 104 ph cm-2 s-1 at the Earth. Smaller flares produce no 3835 emission; we conclude that coronal back conduction cannot produce the bright chromospheric network of that wavelength. The nearly simultaneous growth of H emission at distant points means an agent travelling faster than 5 × 103 km s-1 is responsible, presumably electrons. In all cases near the limb an elevated Ha source is seen with the same time duration as HXR flux; it is concluded that this H source is almost always an elevated cloud which is excited by the fast electrons. A rough calculation is given. Another calculation of H emission from compressed coronal material shows it to be inadequate. In several cases homologous flares occur within hours with the same X-ray properties.Radio models fit, more or less, with field strengths on the order of 100G. A number of flares are discussed in detail.  相似文献

The X-ray line at 6.4 keV has been observed from solar flares. It is found that K-fluorescence of neutral iron in the photosphere due to thermal (T 107 K) X-rays of the gradual phase is its dominant production mechanism. For a given flux and energy spectrum of incident X-rays, the flux at 1 AU of iron K-photons depends on the photospheric iron abundance, the height of the X-ray source, and the helio-centric angle between the flare and the observer. Therefore, the flux of iron K-photons, when measured simultaneously with the flux and energy spectrum of the X-ray continuum and the flare location, can give us information on the height of the X-ray source and the photospheric iron abundance. Here we present our Monte Carlo calculations of iron K-fluorescence efficiencies, so that they might be useful for interpretations of future measurements of the 6.4 keV line (e.g., by a detector to be flown on the Solar Maximum Mission).  相似文献

We present high resolution detailed observations of the class 3N two-ribbon flare of 1973, July 29 (McMath 12461), which was associated with the disappearance of a large filament (disparition brusque). This flare occurred in a diffuse bipolar magnetic region completely devoid of sunspots, and was further associated with a type IV radio burst and a soft X-ray event. Extensive H filtergraph, spectrograph and magnetograph records during the main phase of the flare suggest that downfalling and streaming material is present on both ribbons for several hours during the H emission enhancement, but only at a small number of points located both on and off the ribbons. We find a poor spatial correspondence between bright emission knots in the H ribbons and the positions of the observed downward motion. We conclude that the model of infall-impact of Hyder (1967a, b) is not consistent with our filtergraph and spectrograph observations.Presently at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.  相似文献

Soft solar X-rays (8 gl 12 Å) were observed from OSO-III. An analysis of the X-ray enhancements associated with 165 solar flares revealed that there is a tendency for a weak soft X-ray enhancement to precede the cm- burst and H flare. The peak soft X-ray flux follows the cm- peak by about 4 min, on the average. Additionally, it was found that flare-rich active centers tend to produce flares which are stronger X-ray and cm- emitters than are flares which take place in flare-poor active centers.  相似文献

Solar flare occurrence follows a power-law distribution against total flare energy W: dN/dW W with an index 1.8 as determined by several studies. This implies (a) that microflares must have a different, steeper distribution if they are energetically significant, and (b) there must be a high-energy cutoff of the observed distribution. We identify the distinct soft distribution needed for coronal heating, if such a distribution exists, with Parker's nanoflares. This paper considers a microflare to be a member of the normal X-ray burst population, with comparable physical parameters except for a smaller total energy.  相似文献

Using a photospheric magnetogram of the solar activity complex HR 16862, 16863, 16864 at the end of May 1980 as boundary data a sequence of three-dimensional force-free magnetic fields with spatially constant ( defined by the equation × B = B) is calculated, including numerical field-line tracing. The field is assumed not to be frozen-in and ¦¦, which is a measure of the magnetic free energy, is assumed to increase with time due to some dynamo mechanism. Variation of , starting from = 0, produces a catastrophe-like change of the topology of a field-line system corresponding to an arch filament system connecting the leading spot of HR 16863 with the trailing spot of HR 16862. This topological change is interpreted as causing a series of large homologous flares with synchronous flaring in the two spots. The catastrophe-like behaviour of the field topology is attributed to the nonlinear field-line equations.  相似文献

With the soft X-ray detector (0.2–0.284 keV) aboard the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) we have searched for X-ray emission from hot star coronae and peculiar stars. On Sirius ( CMa) and Capella ( Aur) X-ray emission has been measured at 6 and 5 level, respectively, above background. In all other cases the search revealed no evidence for soft X-ray emission. Upper limits to the luminosities of about 25 star coronae (main-sequence stars, (sub)giants, and supergiants) and of 4 peculiar stars ( Sco, Lyr, P Cyg, and Car) have been obtained.Paper presented at the COSPAR/IAU Symposium on Fast Transients in X-and Gamma-Rays, held at Varna, Bulgaria, 29–31 May, 1975.  相似文献

We use H, X-ray, and kilometric radio data to examine the solar coronal activity associated with energetic (1 MeV/nucl–1) 3He-rich particle events observed near Earth. The basis of the study is the 12 3He-rich events observed in association with impulsive 2 to 100 keV electron events reported by Reames et al. (1985). We find that when H and X-ray brightenings can be associated with 3He/electron events, they have onsets coinciding to within 1 min of that of the associated metric type III bursts. In three or four events we found no associated H or X-ray flares, and in two events even the metric type III bursts were weak or absent. The measured low-energy (2 keV) electron spectra for these events show no evidence of a flattening due to Coulomb collisional losses. These results and several other recent findings are consistent with the idea that the 3He/electron events are due to particle acceleration in the corona well above the associated H and X-ray flares.  相似文献

In the present paper, H-evolutive curves of chromospheric events are compared with flux evolutive curves of X-ray events observed at the same time in different spectral regions. A correspondence between the emissions E(I H/I chr)'s at higher and higher H-intensity levels, and the X-ray fluxes F()'s in harder and harder -ranges is shown. Further, the present observations seem to indicate the existence of a single triggering mechanism during the flash-phase of a flare. It is also shown that these results may be in agreement with Brown's model for chromospheric flares.  相似文献

The observed distribution of waiting times t between X-ray solar flares of greater than C1 class listed in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) catalog exhibits a power-law tail (t) for large waiting times (t>10hours). It is shown that the power-law index varies with the solar cycle. For the minimum phase of the cycle the index is =–1.4±0.1, and for the maximum phase of the cycle the index is –3.2±0.2. For all years 1975–2001, the index is –2.2±0.1. We present a simple theory to account for the observed waiting-time distributions in terms of a Poisson process with a time-varying rate (t). A common approximation of slow variation of the rate with respect to a waiting time is examined, and found to be valid for the GOES catalog events. Subject to this approximation the observed waiting-time distribution is determined by f(), the time distribution of the rate . If f() has a power-law form for low rates, the waiting time-distribution is predicted to have a power-law tail (t)–(3+) (>–3). Distributions f() are constructed from the GOES data. For the entire catalog a power-law index =–0.9±0.1 is found in the time distribution of rates for low rates (<0.1hours –1). For the maximum and minimum phases power-law indices =–0.1±0.5 and =–1.7±0.2, respectively, are observed. Hence, the Poisson theory together with the observed time distributions of the rate predict power-law tails in the waiting-time distributions with indices –2.2±0.1 (1975–2001), –2.9±0.5 (maximum phase) and –1.3±0.2 (minimum phase), consistent with the observations. These results suggest that the flaring rate varies in an intrinsically different way at solar maximum by comparison with solar minimum. The implications of these results for a recent model for flare statistics (Craig, 2001) and more generally for our understanding of the flare process are discussed.  相似文献

Except for protons, the chemical composition of solar cosmic rays is very similar to the abundance of the elements at the photosphere of the Sun. If we consider the relative abundance ratio of protons to -particles (P/) at constant rigidity, this ratio is highly variable from one solar cosmic ray event to another. This ratio observed at the Earth, however, decreases monotonically with time from the onset of solar flares and, furthermore, is dependent on the heliocentric distance of the parent flares from the central meridian of the solar disk. P/'s which have been measured before the onset of SC geomagnetic storms change from 1.5 to 50 or more, being a function of the westward position of the source from the east limb of the Sun. These variations with respect to time and heliocentric distance suggest that the propagation of solar cosmic rays is strongly modulated in the interplanetary space. The major part of the -particles seem to propagate as if they are trapped within the magnetic clouds which produce SC geomagnetic and cosmic ray storms at the earth. The chemical composition and rigidity spectra of solar cosmic rays suggest that solar cosmic rays are mainly accelerated by the Fermi mechanism in solar flares. The observed variation of P/'s is produced mainly through the difference between the propagation characteristics of protons and -particles.NAS-NRC Associate with NASA.  相似文献

A study is made of several ATM flares, to investigate the effect of soft X-ray heating at chromospheric levels. It is shown that the amount of energy released in Ly and Lyman continuum emissions, and their spatial and temporal behavior, in compact flares correspond to what is expected from model calculations. An additional source of heating, which could be heat conduction, has to be postulated to explain ribbons of enhanced L and C ii 1336 Å emission in large flares. As expected, the effect of X-ray heating is more important in small compact flares than in large ones.  相似文献

High-energy proton (E p > 55 MeV) and electron (E e > 50 keV) events were observed by University of Iowa experiments on the satellites Explorer 33 and 35. The solar X-ray (2–12 Å) flares associated with the energetic proton events were found to have in general higher peak fluxes, considerably longer decay times (t) and smaller rise to decay time ratios (r) than the X-ray flares associated with the electron events. The most common decay times and rise to decay time ratios are: 80 t 100 min, 0.1 r 0.2 for the proton X-ray flares and t 20 min, 0.3 r 0.7 for the electron ones.  相似文献

, . , , . , , -, This article investigates the dynamics of a system for damping the nutating motion of a spin-stabilized satellite. The equations of motion of the satellite-damper system are derived omitting consideration of the influence of external torques. The conditions of stability of the stationary spinning are obtained and the optimal parameters of the satellite and the damper ensuring a maximal rate of damping of the nutation motion are determined.  相似文献

We investigate the near-ultraviolet high-resolution LWR spectra of the stars Cas, And, Tau, Gem, Cru, Boo, and Peg, obtained with the aid of the International Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite. We have given here a list of the strongest and most prevalent emission lines in the near-ultraviolet spectra of Boo, KlIIIp, and Peg, M2.5II-III which have the same luminosity class and different spectral type. The near-ultraviolet continuum flux measurements and integrated emission line fluxes of these stars for the 2500–3200 Å region are presented in order to compare the variations in the appearance of the near-ultraviolet flux distribution with the temperature structure of their chromospheres for K and M giant stars. We also discuss differences between observed and calculated fluxes found from the Planck function.  相似文献

The asymptotic properties of a turbulent disk dynamo at large dimensionless numbersR andR characterizing the helicity and the differential rotation are analysed. Three types of generations in the dependence of the relations betweenR andR are found: 2-dynamo and two types of -dynamo. For each of these types the rates of growth are obtained and the forms of solution are pointed out. Boundaries of the disk dynamo approximation are given.  相似文献
