Recharge and groundwater models: an overview   总被引:7,自引:2,他引:7
Recharge is a fundamental component of groundwater systems, and in groundwater-modeling exercises recharge is either measured and specified or estimated during model calibration. The most appropriate way to represent recharge in a groundwater model depends upon both physical factors and study objectives. Where the water table is close to the land surface, as in humid climates or regions with low topographic relief, a constant-head boundary condition is used. Conversely, where the water table is relatively deep, as in drier climates or regions with high relief, a specified-flux boundary condition is used. In most modeling applications, mixed-type conditions are more effective, or a combination of the different types can be used. The relative distribution of recharge can be estimated from water-level data only, but flux observations must be incorporated in order to estimate rates of recharge. Flux measurements are based on either Darcian velocities (e.g., stream baseflow) or seepage velocities (e.g., groundwater age). In order to estimate the effective porosity independently, both types of flux measurements must be available. Recharge is often estimated more efficiently when automated inverse techniques are used. Other important applications are the delineation of areas contributing recharge to wells and the estimation of paleorecharge rates using carbon-14. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Conductivity, water level, air temperature, and depth of snowpack were monitored during a 26-day melt period of 88-cm-deep snowpack at a karst spring to characterize internal runoff and diffuse infiltration. Chloride from road salt provided a tracer and the snowpack a recharge source during the melt period. The melt period was divided into phases based on air temperature and chemograph pattern. For the first and third phases, mean air temperatures were below freezing, but above freezing during the second and fourth phases. During the first phase when the temperature peaked above freezing, conductivity typically spiked 10–50 μS/cm, suggesting input of road salt from conduits. When the snowpack continuously melted, conductivity and water-level trends were upward with smaller daily spikes in conductivity indicating infiltration from the dilute snowpack. This pattern suggests that road salt input continued when snowmelt recharged through the epikarst, but at lower concentrations than the conduit input. Refreezing of the snowpack and shallow subsurface for a brief period interrupted the recharge, and there was no longer a sawtooth pattern of conductivity. It is apparent that frozen conditions did not cease recharge because a dual recharge process was evident. While dual recharge from internal runoff and diffuse infiltration occurred, the portions varied because of changing melting rates. Observed patterns indicated internal runoff dominated during frozen periods because recharge water moved as overland flow across a frozen surface to focused pathways. Diffuse infiltration became available during warmer periods because subsurface thawing allowed the snowmelt to penetrate the epikarst. Results of snowmelt monitoring in spring discharge indicated the transient nature of karst recharge.  相似文献

The cumulative storage accumulation curve (CSAC) is a tool for saturated-volume fluctuation (SVF) analysis of transient recharge to shallow phreatic aquifers discharging only to springs. The method assumes that little underflow or phreatic evapotranspiration occurs. The CSAC is a modified water-table hydrograph that distinguishes storage increase caused by recharge from loss due to springflow-induced recession. Required for the analysis are water-table fluctuations at a single representative location within the catchment of a single spring and either direct measurements or robust interpolations of springflows at different aquifer stages. The method employs empirical manipulation of head observations, varying spring catchment area to minimize CSAC water-level changes in late portions of long recessions. Results include volumetric estimates of recharge integrated over individual events and instantaneous rates of recharge to the water table, at the temporal resolution of the water-level sampling interval. The analysis may also yield physically realistic information on spring catchment and recharge focusing. In a test case in West Virginia, USA, recharge estimates by this technique were consistent with integrated springflow time series but greater than estimates based on potential evapotranspiration. Results give insight into dynamic recharge behavior over time as well as an indication of recharge catchment size. Electronic Publication  相似文献

In this article, we present an interesting behaviour of conductance in a basaltic terrain. We use vertical electrical sounding data carried out in Wenner configuration at dug well sites for data analysis. Geophysical phenomena observed in the sharply rising trends followed by negligibly rising trends of the conductance curves are discussed. The unique behaviour of conductance curve is used to estimate depth to the static water level in dug wells. The geophysically estimated depths to the static water levels are compared with the observed static water levels in the existing dug wells located at all sites of investigation. Water-level fluctuations observed in dug wells between two different periods coinciding with pre- and post-monsoon regimes are geophysically estimated by using the trends on the conductance curves. Depth to the static water levels is geophysically estimated at seven experimental sites located adjacent to dug wells and four virgin sites where there are no dug wells. Validation of the geophysically estimated static water levels and static water-level fluctuations shows encouraging results.  相似文献

Interaction of various physical, chemical and biological transport processes plays an important role in deciding the fate and migration of contaminants in groundwater systems. In this study, a numerical investigation on the interaction of various transport processes of BTEX in a saturated groundwater system is carried out. In addition, the multi-component dissolution from a residual BTEX source under unsteady flow conditions is incorporated in the modeling framework. The model considers Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene and Xylene dissolving from the residual BTEX source zone to undergo sorption and aerobic biodegradation within the groundwater aquifer. Spatial concentration profiles of dissolved BTEX components under the interaction of various sorption and biodegradation conditions have been studied. Subsequently, a spatial moment analysis is carried out to analyze the effect of interaction of various transport processes on the total dissolved mass and the mobility of dissolved BTEX components. Results from the present numerical study suggest that the interaction of dissolution, sorption and biodegradation significantly influence the spatial distribution of dissolved BTEX components within the saturated groundwater system. Mobility of dissolved BTEX components is also found to be affected by the interaction of these transport processes.  相似文献

The hydrogeologic environment of a petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated site in Korea is characterized by hydrogeologic field work and chemical analyses of groundwater. Quaternary alluvium is the main aquifer contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, mainly TEX (toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes). Contamination at this site was derived from the leaking of petroleum storage tanks. The aquifer is highly permeable, but vertically heterogeneous. Water-table fluctuations reach up to 2 m during heavy rains. Contaminants migrated to the northwest along the main groundwater-flow direction. The concentration of hydrocarbons in groundwater is particularly high downgradient from the source area. The ubiquitous distribution of TEX was caused by the heterogeneity of the aquifer material and the significant fluctuation of the water-table. Chemical properties of the contaminated groundwater and field parameters indicate that intrinsic biodegradation, including aerobic respiration, nitrate reduction, iron reduction, manganese reduction, and sulfate reduction, occurs at this site. The dilution and mixing due to new groundwater recharge from rainfall is also identified as one of the major attenuation processes of TEX.  相似文献

Groundwater recharge is an important component to hydrologic studies but is known to vary considerably across the landscape. The purpose of this study was to examine 4 years of water-level behavior in a transect of four water-table wells installed at Walnut Creek, Iowa, USA to evaluate how groundwater recharge varied along a topographic gradient. The amount of daily water-table rise (WTR) in the wells was summed at monthly and annual scales and estimates of specific yield (Sy) were used to convert the WTR to recharge. At the floodplain site, Sy was estimated from the ratio of WTR to total rainfall and in the uplands was based on the ratio of baseflow to WTR. In the floodplain, where the water table is shallow, recharge occurred throughout the year whenever precipitation occurred. In upland areas where the water table was deeper, WTR occurred in a stepped fashion and varied by season. Results indicated that the greatest amount of water-table rise over the 4-year period was observed in the floodplain (379 mm), followed by the upland (211 mm) and sideslopes (122 mm). Incorporating spatial variability in recharge in a watershed will improve groundwater resource evaluation and flow and transport modeling.  相似文献

The karstic upper Floridan aquifer in north-central Florida (USA) is recharged by both diffuse and allogenic recharge. To understand how recharged water moves within the aquifer, water levels and specific conductivities were monitored and slug tests were conducted in wells installed in the aquifer surrounding the Santa Fe River Sink and Rise. Results indicate that diffuse recharge does not mix rapidly within the aquifer but instead flows horizontally. Stratification may be aided by the high matrix porosity of the eogenetic karst aquifer. Purging wells for sample collection perturbed conductivity for several days, reflecting mixing of the stratified water and rendering collection of representative samples difficult. Interpretive numerical simulations suggest that diffuse recharge impacts the intrusion of allogenic water from the conduit by increasing hydraulic head in the surrounding aquifer and thereby reducing influx to the aquifer from the conduit. In turn, the increase of head within the conduits affects flow paths of diffuse recharge by moving newly recharged water vertically as the water table rises and falls. This movement may result in a broad vertical zone of dissolution at the water table above the conduit system, with thinner and more focused water-table dissolution at greater distance from the conduit.  相似文献

A time-series approach to the estimation of recharge rate in unconfined aquifers of highly variable water level is proposed. The approach, which is based on the water-table fluctuation method (WTF), utilizes discrete water-level measurements. Other similar techniques require continuous measurements, which makes them impossible to apply in cases where no data from automatic loggers are available. The procedure is deployed at the Ressacada Farm site, southern Brazil, on a coastal shallow aquifer located in a humid subtropical climate where diurnal water-level variations of up to 1 m can follow a precipitation event. The effect of tidal fluctuations on the groundwater levels is analyzed using a harmonic component builder, while a time-variable drainage term is evaluated through an independent analysis and included in the assessment. The estimated recharge values are compared with those obtained from the continuous measurements showing a good agreement with the approaches for discrete dataset intervals of up to 15 days. Subsequently, the estimated recharge rates are incorporated into a transient groundwater-flow model and the water levels are compared showing a good match. Henceforth, the approach extends the applicability of WTF to noncontinuous water-level datasets in groundwater recharge studies.  相似文献

Crystalline aquifers of semi-arid southern India represent a vital water resource for farming communities. A field study is described that characterizes the hydrodynamic functioning of intensively exploited crystalline aquifers at local scale based on detailed well monitoring during one hydrological year. The main results show large water-table fluctuations caused by monsoon recharge and pumping, high spatial variability in well discharges, and a decrease of well yields as the water table decreases. Groundwater chemistry is also spatially variable with the existence of aquifer compartments within which mixing occurs. The observed variability and compartmentalization is explained by geological heterogeneities which play a major role in controlling groundwater flow and connectivity in the aquifer. The position of the water table within the fracture network will determine the degree of connectivity between aquifer compartments and well discharge. The presented aquifer conceptual model suggests several consequences: (1) over-exploitation leads to a drop in well discharge, (2) intensive pumping may contribute to the hydraulic containment of contaminants, (3) groundwater quality is highly variable even at local scale, (4) geological discontinuities may be used to assist in the location of drinking-supply wells, (5) modeling should integrate threshold effects due to water-table fluctuations.  相似文献

Urbanization and the groundwater budget, metropolitan Seoul area, Korea   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
The city of Seoul is home to more than 10 million people in an area of 605 km2. Groundwater is abstracted for public water supply and industrial use, and to drain underground facilities and construction sites. Though most tap water is supplied from the Han River, the quantity and quality of groundwater is of great concern to Seoul's citizens, because the use of groundwater for drinking water is continuously increasing. This study identifies the major factors affecting the urban water budget and quality of groundwater in the Seoul area and estimates the urban water budget. These factors include leakage from the municipal water-supply system and sewer systems, precipitation infiltration, water-level fluctuations of the Han River, the subway pumping system, and domestic pumping. The balance between groundwater recharge and discharge is near equilibrium. However, the quality of groundwater and ability to control contaminant fluxes are impeded by sewage infiltration, abandoned landfills, waste dumps, and abandoned wells. This paper evaluates the reliability of the geochemical and hydrodynamic sampling in a phreatic aquifer of semi-arid Africa. These remarks are based on a dense network and on detailed data collected for about ten years in the Continental Terminal water table near Niamey, Niger. The natural potentiometric fluctuations are seasonal (up to 6 m during the rainy season) and interannual (up to 10 m since the 1960s). Hydrodynamic measurements can be disturbed by artificial flooding into the wells (20% of the network) and by domestic drawings (up to 2 m of lowering). Geochemical characteristics can vary seasonally: isotopic modifications and salinity increase near recharge areas, with more stability further away. They can also vary artificially in wells because of their large opening towards the open air. Artifical increases of salinity of one order of magnitude and contaminations of 14C activities of up to 20 pmC occur in some wells by atmospheric dust inputs or organic matter which was has fallen into the well. In conclusion, some recommendations are given for a representative sampling in semi-arid phreatic aquifers.  相似文献

The impact of vegetation cover on groundwater table was assessed with the observed water level fluctuations at two monitored wells in stalled on a bare ground and a vegetated land, respectively.Substantial differences in water table behavior were observed under two land cover scenarios.Ingeneral, the water level in the east grass (EG) well was lower and had much less response to rainfall events than the WNG well mainly due to the difference in the land cover. The effect of vegetation was to lower the water level in the EG well through ET and thus reduce groundwater recharge, which in turn reduced the chemical loads to the creek. The daily and accumulative ET values were estimated with both the Penman-Monteith method and a water table recession model. It is suggested that while the Penman-Monteith method closely modeled hourly ET cycles during the day,it underestimated actual ET during an intensive mid-summer growing period, and especially underestimated actual ET when the water table was close to the landsurface. With the water table recession model, the amount of ET was estimated at its maximum ET of 7.6 mm when the water table was near the groundsurface and then decreases exponentially to zero around day 33 during a dry period with the accumulative ET of 93.9 mm,or 2.84 mm/day.The results from this study clearly demonstrate that landuse and vegetation coverage have significant effects on ET,groundwater recharge and implications for a basin-scale water cycle and chemical loads to rivers and streams.  相似文献

The concentrations of Rare Earth Elements (REE) and Redox Sensitive Elements (RSE) were measured in groundwaters along a transect of the forest-marsh interface of a surficial aquifer system in North Inlet, SC. The well transect extended from a forest recharge area across the marsh and tidal creek to a tidal recharge area of beach ridge. The concentrations of the RSE (Fe, Mn, and U) were consistent with reducing conditions through the transect. Fe was present at concentrations ranging from a few micromolar to greater than one hundred micromolar in most wells. U was depleted with respect to salinity predicted concentrations, indicating removal with respect to the seawater endmember. Dissolved Mn concentrations were generally low in all wells, indicating no significant solid source of Mn (as MnOx) in this system. When extrapolated to a global scale, estimates of U removal during seawater exchange with the aquifer solids equaled 10–20% of the total riverine dissolved U input flux. REE concentrations in the forest recharge area were high in shallow wells, and showed a light enriched fractionation pattern, characteristic of soil leaching by Natural Organic Matter (NOM) rich waters. A decrease in REE concentration with depth in the forest wells coupled with a trend towards Heavy REE (HREE) enriched fractionation pattern indicated removal of the REE coincident with NOM and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) removal. The saline waters of the beach ridge wells show a Light REE (LREE) enriched fractionation pattern and have the highest overall concentrations of the REE, indicating a significant REE source to the seawater endmember waters. The concentration gradients along the beach ridge flow path indicate a large source in the deep wells, and net export of dissolved REE to the tidal creek system and the coastal ocean. Ultrafiltration experiments indicate a transition from a colloidal dominated reservoir for the REE in the forest wells to a colloidal and dissolved reservoir in the beach ridge wells. The ultrafiltration data coupled with a correlation with Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) release suggest that there is diagenetic mobilization of an REE rich organic carbon phase in the saline endmember wells. We suggest here that degradation of this relic terrestrial organic carbon and REE rich phase results in the export of dissolved REE equal to or exceeding river inputs in this region.  相似文献

Steelmaking-coal waste rock placed in mountain catchments in the Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada, drain constituents of interest (CIs) to surface water downgradient of the waste rock dumps. The role of groundwater in transporting CIs in the headwaters of mountain catchments is not well understood. This study characterizes the physical hydrogeology of a portion of a 10-km2 headwater catchment (West Line Creek) downgradient of a 2.7-km2 waste rock dump placed over a natural headwater valley-bottom groundwater system. The study site was instrumented with 13 monitoring wells. Drill core samples were collected to determine subsurface lithology and geotechnical properties. The groundwater system was characterized using field testing and water-level monitoring. The valley-bottom sediments were composed of unconsolidated glacial and meltwater successions (<64 m thick) deposited as a series of cut and fill structures overlying shale bedrock. An unconfined basal alluvial aquifer located above fractured bedrock was identified as the primary conduit for groundwater flow toward Line Creek (650 m from the toe of the dump). Discharge through the basal alluvial aquifer was estimated using the geometric mean hydraulic conductivity (±1 standard deviation). These calculations suggest groundwater discharge could account for approximately 15% (ranging from 2 to 60%) of the total water discharged from the watershed. The residence time from the base of the waste rock dump to Line Creek was estimated at <3 years. The groundwater system was defined as a snowmelt (i.e., nival) regime dominated by direct recharge (percolation of precipitation) across the catchment.  相似文献

Detailed analysis of basal organic deposits underlying Hammock River marsh, Connecticut allowed documentation of water-level changes that occurred between 13,000 and 6000 yrs B.P. Four main periods of groundwater- and lake-level movements and related environmental changes can be identified.

1. (1) 12,500-10,200 yrs B.P. (lake stage): very rapid rise of the groundwater table of about 2 to 3 m, resulting in a shallow lake, followed by a more gradual rise of about 2.5 to 1.5 m.

2. (2) 10,200-7000 yrs B.P. (freshwater marsh, stage 1): slow overall rise of the water table interrupted by a drop of at least 1 m between about 9500 and 9000 yrs B.P. and of at least 0.8 m between about 8000 and 7500 yrs B.P., each event leading to oxidation and maceration of organic material.

3. (3) 7000-6400 yrs B.P. (complete desiccation of the swamp): rapid fall of the water table of at least 3.9 m. causing large-scale down-wasting of the accumulated peat.

4. (4) After 6400 yrs B.P. (freshwater marsh, stage 2): rapid rise of the water table.

The water-table rise of period 1 and the lowering of period 3 are attributed to predominantly local causes, while the groundwater fluctuations during period 2 are probably climate-related. The final water-level increase reflects the influence of Holocene relative sea-level rise.  相似文献

Groundwater samples from 288 domestic wells in Barry County, Michigan, were analyzed for 33 inorganic chemical parameters. Variations in chemical composition were investigated by considering the possible effects of human impact, aquifer type (bedrock vs glacial drift), chemical evolution along groundwater flow paths, and glacial landform type (moraine vs outwash). Approximately 25 percent of the glacial drift wells were classified as degraded by human impact and were excluded from further analysis of chemical variation. Two-sample tests comparing individual concentrations from drift and bedrock aquifers suggest that groundwater in the Marshall Sandstone aquifer is derived from local recharge through the glacial drift. This conclusion is supported by generalized groundwater flow patterns recognized for the two aquifers.Concentrations in both aquifers were examined in relation to generalized flow paths derived from water level data and also by classification of wells as recharge, transition, and discharge. No spatial concentration trends in major ions were detected, although iron concentrations do appear to increase from recharge to discharge areas. Declining redox potential along groundwater flow paths may explain this trend. The possible influence of glacial landform type was investigated by comparing concentrations of wells in moraines with those in outwash deposits. Wells in moraines have significantly higher concentrations of most parameters, perhaps due to higher content of finer, more chemically reactive sediment grains.  相似文献

Differentiating between mineralized and non-mineralized background groundwater chemistry at a mine site can be challenging if there is an overprint of past and/or current mining on naturally mineralized conditions. At the Phoenix mine in the Copper Canyon mining district of Nevada, quantile–quantile H+/SO4 plots were used to segregate four wells clearly impacted by historical mining activity. The mineralogy of rock at the elevation of the well screen interval was used to partition the 53 remaining wells into mineralized and non-mineralized populations. For each class, groundwater chemistry was examined to identify if SO4 and H+ trends were stable (unimpacted) or increasing (impacted). Then each well was mapped as one of four resulting groundwater types across the mine site, defining the spatial extent of the different groups. Several groundwater regions were identified. A group of mineralized, mine-impacted wells (Type II) are located in Philadelphia Canyon adjacent to the Cu leach facility, with the anthropogenically impacted area bounded by several hydrologically downgradient, mineralized, unimpacted wells (Type I) to the south and east. There is a set of non-mineralized, impacted wells (Type III) downgradient from the tailings pond facility, where a historical release of SO4 is apparent in the well record. However, in some downgradient wells the tailings pond pump-back mitigation system has resulted in recovery of the groundwater quality to a non-mineralized background condition. Finally, in the vicinity of the Reona heap leach pad, there is a group of non-mineralized, unimpacted wells (Type IV). Not surprisingly, most mineralized wells (Types I and II) are located in or near mined areas, while non-mineralized wells (Types III and IV) tend to be in the southern portion of the facility in the alluvia of Buffalo and Reese River valleys.  相似文献

Potassium chloride (KCl) and potassium bromide (KBr) tracers were used to explore the role of geologic structure on groundwater recharge and flow at the Fractured Rock Research Site in Floyd County, Virginia, USA. Tracer migration was monitored through soil, saprolite, and fractured crystalline bedrock for a period of 3 months with chemical, physical, and geophysical techniques. The tracers were applied at specific locations on the ground surface to directly test flow pathways in a shallow saprolite and deep fractured-rock aquifer. Tracer monitoring was accomplished with differential electrical resistivity, chemical sampling, and physical monitoring of water levels and spring discharge. KCl, applied at a concentration of 10,000 mg/L, traveled 160 m downgradient through the thrust fault aquifer to a spring outlet in 24 days. KBr, applied at a concentration of 5,000 mg/L, traveled 90 m downgradient through the saprolite aquifer in 19 days. Tracer breakthrough curves indicate diffuse flow through the saprolite aquifer and fracture flow through the crystalline thrust fault aquifer. Monitoring saline tracer migration through soil, saprolite, and fractured rock provided data on groundwater recharge that would not have been available using other traditional hydrologic methods. Travel times and flowpaths observed during this study support preferential groundwater recharge controlled by geologic structure.  相似文献
