Summary ?The paper considers a meso-scale, adiabatic, inviscid and Boussisnesq flow of a stably stratified fluid over a three-dimensional
(3-D) meso-scale orographic barrier with elliptic contour, with special reference to a part of the Western ghats mountain
along west coast of India and on the Khasi-Jayantia hill in the northeast India. The airstream characteristics are simplified
by assuming that the upstream wind velocity (U) and buoyancy frequency (N) are constant with height. Solutions for perturbation vertical velocity (w′) and streamline displacement (η′) are expressed in terms of double integrals. These integrals cannot be evaluated exactly,
hence they have been approximated by asymptotic expansion method. Side by side solutions using numerical method have also
been obtained. The results of the study indicate that the updraft regions in the asymptotic solution are crescent shaped,
symmetrical about the axis y = 0, tilting upwind and spreading laterally with height. The study also shows that in both asymptotic solution and numerical
solution w′ and η′ fall off down wind of the barrier in the central plane (y = 0), further more in the asymptotic solution w′ and η′ fall off as x
−1. The study also indicates that the discrete updraft regions obtained in the numerical solution, when joined, take a crescent
shape.

The parameterization of the dimensionless entrainment rate (w
e
/w
*) versus the convective Richardson number (Ri
δθ
) is discussed in the framework of a first-order jump model (FOM). A theoretical estimation for the proportionality coefficient
in this parameterization, namely, the total entrainment flux ratio, is derived. This states that the total entrainment flux
ratio in FOM can be estimated as the ratio of the entrainment zone thickness to the mixed-layer depth, a relationship that
is supported by earlier tank experiments, and suggesting that the total entrainment flux ratio should be treated as a variable.
Analyses show that the variability of the total entrainment flux ratio is actually the effect of stratification in the free
atmosphere on the entrainment process, which should be taken into account in the parameterization. Further examination of
data from tank experiments and large-eddy simulations demonstrate that the different power laws for w
e
/w
* versus Ri
δθ
can be interpreted as the variability of the total entrainment flux ratio. These results indicate that the dimensionless
entrainment rate depends not only on the convective Richardson number but also upon the total entrainment flux ratio. 相似文献

Summary In this paper the results of an urban measurement campaign are presented. The experiment took place from July 1995 to February
1996 in Basel, Switzerland. A total of more than 2000 undisturbed 30-minute runs of simultaneous measurements of the fluctuations
of the wind vector u′, v′, w′ and the sonic temperature θ
s
′ at three different heights (z=36, 50 and 76 m a.g.l.) are analysed with respect to the integral statistics and their spectral behaviour. Estimates of the
zero plane displacement height d calculated by the temperature variance method yield a value of 22 m for the two lower levels, which corresponds to 0.92 h
(the mean height of the roughness elements). At all three measurement heights the dimensionless standard deviation σ
w
/u
* is systematically smaller than the Monin-Obukhov similarity function for the inertial sublayer, however, deviations are smaller
compared to other urban turbulence studies. The σθ/θ* values follow the inertial sublayer prediction very close for the two lowest levels, while at the uppermost level significant
deviations are observed. Profiles of normalized velocity and temperature variances show a clear dependence on stability. The
profile of friction velocity u
* is similar to the profiles reported in other urban studies with a maximum around z/h=2.1. Spectral characteristics of the wind components in general show a clear dependence on stability and dimensionless measurement
height z/h with a shift of the spectral peak to lower frequencies as thermal stability changes from stable to unstable conditions and
as z/h decreases. Velocity spectra follow the −2/3 slope in the inertial subrange region and the ratios of spectral energy densities
S
w
(f)/S
u
(f) approach the value of 4/3 required for local isotropy in the inertial subrange. Velocity spectra and spectral peaks fit
best to the well established surface layer spectra from Kaimal et al. (1972) at the uppermost level at z/h=3.2.

A large-eddy simulation (LES) model, using the one-equation subgrid-scale (SGS) parametrization, was developed to study the
flow and pollutant transport in and above urban street canyons. Three identical two-dimensional (2D) street canyons of unity
aspect ratio, each consisting of a ground-level area source of constant pollutant concentration, are evenly aligned in a cross-flow
in the streamwise direction x. The flow falls into the skimming flow regime. A larger computational domain is adopted to accurately resolve the turbulence
above roof level and its influence on the flow characteristics in the street canyons. The LES calculated statistics of wind
and pollutant transports agree well with other field, laboratory and modelling results available in the literature. The maximum
wind velocity standard deviations σ
i
in the streamwise (σ
u
), spanwise (σ
v
) and vertical (σ
w
) directions are located near the roof-level windward corners. Moreover, a second σ
w
peak is found at z ≈ 1.5h (h is the building height) over the street canyons. Normalizing σ
i
by the local friction velocity u
*, it is found that σ
u
/u
* ≈ 1.8, σ
v
/u
* ≈ 1.3 and σ
w
/u
* ≈ 1.25 exhibiting rather uniform values in the urban roughness sublayer. Quadrant analysis of the vertical momentum flux
u′′w′′ shows that, while the inward and outward interactions are small, the sweeps and ejections dominate the momentum transport
over the street canyons. In the x direction, the two-point correlations of velocity R
v,x
and R
w,x
drop to zero at a separation larger than h but R
u,x
(= 0.2) persists even at a separation of half the domain size. Partitioning the convective transfer coefficient Ω
T
of pollutant into its removal and re-entry components, an increasing pollutant re-entrainment from 26.3 to 43.3% in the x direction is revealed, suggesting the impact of background pollutant on the air quality in street canyons. 相似文献

Relaxed Eddy Accumulation Simulations of Aerosol Number Fluxes and Potential Proxy Scalars 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Direct eddy-covariance measurements of aerosol number fluxes obtained during the 2007 CHATS field experiment in Dixon, California,
USA are compared with relaxed eddy accumulation simulations using temperature and water vapour concentration as proxy scalars.
After a brief discussion of the limited time response of the aerosol measurement, the applicability of temperature and water
vapour concentration as proxy scalars for aerosol number concentration is investigated by evaluating scalar and spectral correlation
coefficients as simple measures of scalar similarity. In addition, the proportionality factor b, which compensates for the use of a constant sampling flow in relaxed eddy accumulation, is derived from the time series
of aerosol number, temperature and water vapour, and its variability is analyzed. The reduction of the b factor due to application of a deadband, i.e. the rejection of data when the vertical wind speed is close to zero, is evaluated
for all three studied scalars, and compared with published functional relationships. In this study, using temperature or water
vapour as proxy scalars for aerosol number shows no advantage over the use of a constant b factor. Thus, it is suggested to apply a deadband H
REA
= w′/σ
w
= 0.6 to 0.8 (where w′ is the vertical velocity fluctuation and σ
w
is its standard deviation), to use a theoretical b factor based on a parameterization that includes a stability dependence, and to calculate the deadband effect according to
a derived relation for aerosol relaxed eddy accumulation. 相似文献

Summary Seasonal variations of gravity wave characteristics are investigated using rawinsonde data observed at Pohang observatory,
Korea (36°2′N, 129°23′E) during the one-year period of 1998. Analysis is carried out for two atmospheric layers representing
the troposphere (2–9 km) and stratosphere (17–30 km). There exist clear seasonal variations in amplitudes of temperature and
wind perturbations and wave energy in the stratosphere, with their maxima in wintertime and minima in summertime. A strong
correlation is found between the wave activity and the strength of the jet stream, but there is no clear correlation between
the wave activity and the vertical gradient of static stability. The intrinsic frequency and vertical and horizontal wavelengths
of gravity waves in the stratosphere are 2f–3f, where f is the Coriolis parameter, and 2–3 km and 300–500 km, respectively. The intrinsic phase velocity directs westward in January
and northeastward in July. The vertical flux of the stratospheric zonal momentum is mostly negative except in summertime with
a maximum magnitude in January. Topography seems to be a major source of stratospheric gravity waves in wintertime. Convection
can be a source of gravity waves in summertime, but it is required to know convective sources at nearby stations, due to their
intermittency and locations relative to floating balloons. 相似文献

This contribution investigates the nature of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in a steep and narrow Alpine valley under fair-weather
summertime conditions. The Riviera Valley in southern Switzerland was chosen for a detailed case study, in which the evaluation
of aircraft data (obtained from the MAP-Riviera field campaign) is combined with the application of high-resolution (350-m
horizontal grid spacing) large-eddy simulations using the numerical model ARPS. The simulations verify what has already been
observed on the basis of measurements: TKE profiles scale surprisingly well if the convective velocity scale w
* is obtained from the sun-exposed eastern slope rather than from the surface directly beneath the profiles considered. ARPS
is then used to evaluate the TKE-budget equation, showing that, despite sunny conditions, wind shear is the dominant production
mechanism. Therefore, the surface heat flux (and thus w
*) on the eastern slope does not determine the TKE evolution directly but rather, as we believe, indirectly via the interaction
of thermally-driven cross-valley and along-valley flows. Excellent correlation between w
* and the up-valley wind speed solidifies this hypothesis. 相似文献

We perform large-eddy simulation (LES) of a moderately convective atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) using a prognostic subfilter-scale
(SFS) model obtained by truncating the full conservation equations for the SFS stresses and fluxes. The truncated conservation
equations contain production mechanisms that are absent in eddy-diffusivity closures and, thus, have the potential to better
parametrize the SFS stresses and fluxes. To study the performance of the conservation-equation-based SFS closure, we compare
LES results from the surface layer with observations from the Horizontal Array Turbulence Study (HATS) experiment. For comparison,
we also show LES results obtained using an eddy-diffusivity closure. Following past studies, we plot various statistics versus
the non-dimensional parameter, Λ
w
/Δ, where Λ
w
is the wavelength corresponding to the peak in the vertical velocity spectrum and Δ is the filter width. The LES runs are
designed using different domain sizes, filter widths and surface fluxes, in order to replicate partly the conditions in the
HATS experiment. Our results show that statistics from the different LES runs collapse reasonably and exhibit clear trends
when plotted against Λ
w
/Δ. The trends exhibited by the production terms in the modelled SFS conservation equations are qualitatively similar to those
seen in the HATS data with the exception of SFS buoyant production, which is underpredicted. The dominant production terms
in the modelled SFS stress and flux budgets obtained from LES are found to approach asymptotically constant values at low
Λ
w
/Δ. For the SFS stress budgets, we show that several of these asymptotes are in good agreement with their corresponding theoretical
values in the limit Λ
w
/Δ → 0. The modelled SFS conservation equations yield trends in the mean values and fluctuations of the SFS stresses and fluxes
that agree better with the HATS data than do those obtained using an eddy-diffusivity closure. They, however, underpredict
considerably the level of SFS anisotropy near the wall when compared to observations, which could be a consequence of the
shortcomings in the model used for the pressure destruction terms. Finally, we address the computational cost incurred due
to the use of additional prognostic equations. 相似文献

In June 1991 the EFEDA-field experiment (ECHIVAL Field Experiment in a Desertification-Threatened Area) was carried out in the Spanish province Castilla-La Mancha, to improve the understanding of the interactions between the soil, the vegetation and the atmosphere. Here results of energy balance studies at the Barrax site are given, one of the three intensively studied experimental sites within Castilla-La Mancha. This area is characterized by a large fraction of irrigated fields (40%) while the remaining 60% was fallow land at the end of June 1991. The energy balances over these two characteristic land-use classes totally differ. While for the irrigated fields the evapotranspiration is dominant, for the non-irrigated fields the sensible and the soil heat fluxes dominate and the latent heat flux is nearly negligible. In order to achieve areally averaged turbulent fluxes, surface, SODAR and aircraft data have been used. Comparing the surface fluxes from all three facilities, it can be found that:The sensible heat flux estimation from SODAR (w-method) gives reliable results when a calibration of w is done with another independent system (e.g. aircraft).Aircraft measurements in conjunction with energy budget methods yield surface fluxes of sensible heat, which are about 20% lower than the areally averaged values calculated by the surface measurements. The areally averaged latent heat fluxes from aircraft and surface measurements agree better than the sensible heat fluxes. 相似文献

The variations noticed in the atmospheric electric field recorded at Pune (18o32’N, 73o51’E, 559 m ASL), a tropi-cal inland station located in Deccan Plateau, India, during the period 1930-1987, have been examined in relation to the variations observed in the Angstrom turbidity coefficient (β) and selected meteorological parameters. The month-ly and annual mean values of the atmospheric electric field, Angstrom turbidity coefficient (β), rainfall, temperature and relative humidity for the years 1930-1938, 1957-1958, 1964-1965, 1973-1974 and 1987 were considered in the study. The results of the above study indicated gradual increases in the atmospheric electric field over the period of study (1930-1987) which is statistically significant at less than 5% level. The increases noticed during different periods varied from 30 to 109 %. The increase noticed during the period (1930-1938) and (1973-1974) was maximum (109%). The Angstrom turbidity coefficient also showed systematic increases during the period of study, which is consistent. The diurnal curve of the atmospheric electric field at the station by and large, showed a double oscillation, which is generally observed in the continental environments. 相似文献

Summary ?Simultaneous flight measurements with the research aircraft Do 128 and the helicopter-borne turbulence probe Helipod were
performed on 18 June 1998 during the LITFASS-98 field experiment. The area-averaged turbulent vertical fluxes of momentum,
sensible, and latent heat were determined on a 15 km × 15 km and a 10 km × 10 km flight pattern, respectively. The flights
were carried out over heterogeneous terrain at different altitudes within a moderately convective boundary layer with Cumulus
clouds.
Co-spectra-analysis demonstrated that the small scale turbulent transport was completely sampled, while the comparatively
small flight patterns were possibly of critical size regarding the large-scale turbulence. The phygoide of the airplane was
identified as a significant peak in some co-spectra. The turbulent fluxes of momentum and sensible heat at 80 m above the
ground showed systematic dependence on the location of the flight legs above the heterogeneous terrain. This was not observed
for the latent heat flux, probably due to the vertical distribution of humidity in the boundary layer.
Statistical error analysis of the fluxes F showed that the systematic statistical error ΔF was one order of magnitude smaller than the standard deviation σ
F
. The difference between area-averaged fluxes derived from simultaneous Helipod and Do 128 measurements was much smaller than
σ
F
, indicating that the systematic statistical error was possibly over-estimated by the usual method.
In the upper half of the boundary layer the airborne-measured sensible heat flux agreed well with windprofiler/RASS data.
A linear fit was the best approximation for the height dependence of all three fluxes. The linear extrapolations of the latent
and sensible heat fluxes to the ground were in good agreement with tower, scintillometer, and averaged ground-station measurements
on various surface types. Systematic discrepancies between airborne and ground-based measurements were not found.

Summary In this paper, an attempt has been made to examine the effect of static stability on the pattern of three dimensional (3-D)
baroclinic lee wave across a meso-scale elliptical barrier. For this purpose first a 3-D meso scale lee wave model has been
developed. Then the model is applied to the Western Ghats (WG) using real time radio sonde data of Santacruz (19°7′N, 72°51′E)
(here after SCZ), a station on the windward side of WG, on the days when dynamic and thermodynamic conditions of the atmosphere
were favourable to generate lee waves.
It is found that the pattern of 3-D baroclinic lee wave is very much sensitive to the value of the static stability parameter
N2. It is found that during southwest monsoon season trapped lee waves are convergent type (contours of perturbation vertical
velocity w′ are crescent shaped convex down wind) and during winter they are divergent type (contours of w′ are crescent shaped concave down wind). The study shows that for a given profile of wind, the value of N2 must exceed certain threshold value to obtain divergent type lee wave, otherwise convergent type lee waves are found.
It is also found that in the southwest monsoon season, when atmosphere is neutrally stratified, a single divergent lee wave
corresponds to a single transverse lee wave, whereas in the winter season, when atmosphere is strongly stratified, a single
divergent lee wave corresponds to a number of transverse lee wave. Furthermore, in the former case long (or short) divergent
lee wave corresponds to short (or long) transverse lee wave, whereas in the later case long (or short) divergent lee wave,
in general, corresponds to long (or short) transverse lee wave.

Quantitative reconstruction of the last interglacial vegetation and climate based on the pollen record from Lake Baikal, Russia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Changes in mean temperature of the coldest (T
c) and warmest month (T
w), annual precipitation (P
ann) and moisture index (α) were reconstructed from a continuous pollen record from Lake Baikal, Russia. The pollen sequence
CON01-603-2 (53°57′N, 108°54′E) was recovered from a 386 m water depth in the Continent Ridge and dated to ca. 130–114.8 ky
BP. This time interval covers the complete last interglacial (LI), corresponding to MIS 5e. Results of pollen analysis and
pollen-based quantitative biome reconstruction show pronounced changes in the regional vegetation throughout the record. Shrubby
tundra covered the area at the beginning of MIS 5e (ca. 130–128 ky), consistent with the end of the Middle Pleistocene glaciation.
The late glacial climate was characterised by low winter and summer temperatures (T
c ~ −38 to −35°C and T
w~11–13°C) and low annual precipitation (P
ann~300 mm). However, the wide spread of tundra vegetation suggests rather moist environments associated with low temperatures
and evaporation (reconstructed α~1). Tundra was replaced by boreal conifer forest (taiga) by ca. 128 ky BP, suggesting a transition
to the interglacial. Taiga-dominant phase lasted until ca. 117.4 ky BP, e.g. about 10 ky. The most favourable climate conditions
occurred during the first half of the LI. P
ann reached 500 mm soon after 128 ky BP. However, temperature changed more gradually. Maximum values of T
c ~ −20°C and T
w~16–17°C are reconstructed from about 126 ky BP. Conditions became gradually colder after ca. 121 ky BP. T
c dropped to ~ −27°C and T
w to ~15°C by 119.5 ky BP. The reconstructed increase in continentality was accompanied by a decrease in P
ann to ~400–420 mm. However, the climate was still humid enough (α~0.9) to support growth of boreal evergreen conifers. A sharp
turn towards a dry climate is reconstructed after ca. 118 ky BP, causing retreat of forest and spread of cool grass-shrub
communities. Cool steppe dominated the vegetation in the area between ca. 117.5 ky and 114.8 ky BP, suggesting the end of
the interglacial and transition to the last glacial (MIS 5d). Shift to the new glaciation was characterised by cool and very
dry conditions with T
c ~ −28 to −30°C, T
w~14–15°C, P
ann~250 mm and α~0.5. 相似文献

The Summer Surface Energy Balance of the High Antarctic Plateau 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The summertime surface energy balance (SEB) at Kohnen station, situated on the high Antarctic plateau (75°00′ S, 0°04′ E,
2892m above sea level) is presented for the period of 8 January to 9 February 2002. Shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes
were measured directly; the former was corrected for problems associated with the cosine response of the instrument. Sensible
and latent heat fluxes were calculated using the bulk method, and eddy-correlation measurements and the modified Bowen ratio
method were used to verify these calculated fluxes. The calculated sub-surface heat flux was checked by comparing calculated
to measured snow temperatures. Uncertainties in the measurements and energy-balance calculations are discussed.
The general meteorological conditions were not extraordinary during the period of the experiment, with a mean 2-m air temperature
of −27.5°C, specific humidity of 0.52×10−3kg kg−1 and wind speed of 4.1ms−1. The experiment covered the transition period from Antarctic summer (positive net radiation) to winter (negative net radiation),
and as a result the period mean net radiation, sensible heat, latent heat and sub-surface heat fluxes were small with values
of −1.1, 0.0, −1.0 and 0.7 Wm−2, respectively. Daily mean net radiation peaked on cloudy days (16 Wm−2) and was negative on clear-sky days (minimum of −19 W m−2). Daily mean sensible heat flux ranged from −8 to +10 Wm−2, latent heat flux from −4 to 0 Wm−2 and sub-surface heat flux from −8 to +7 Wm−2. 相似文献

A significant non-alignment between the mean horizontal wind vector and the stress vector was observed for turbulence measurements
both above the water surface of a large lake, and over a land surface (soybean crop). Possible causes for this discrepancy
such as flow distortion, averaging times and the procedure used for extracting the turbulent fluctuations (low-pass filtering
and filter widths etc.), were dismissed after a detailed analysis. Minimum averaging times always less than 30 min were established
by calculating ogives, and error bounds for the turbulent stresses were derived with three different approaches, based on
integral time scales (first-crossing and lag-window estimates) and on a bootstrap technique. It was found that the mean absolute
value of the angle between the mean wind and stress vectors is highly related to atmospheric stability, with the non-alignment
increasing distinctively with increasing instability. Given a coordinate rotation that aligns the mean wind with the x direction, this behaviour can be explained by the growth of the relative error of the u–w component with instability. As a result, under more unstable conditions the u–w and the v–w components become of the same order of magnitude, and the local stress vector gives the impression of being non-aligned with
the mean wind vector. The relative error of the v–w component is large enough to make it undistinguishable from zero throughout the range of stabilities. Therefore, the standard
assumptions of Monin–Obukhov similarity theory hold: it is fair to assume that the v–w stress component is actually zero, and that the non-alignment is a purely statistical effect. An analysis of the dimensionless
budgets of the u–w and the v–w components confirms this interpretation, with both shear and buoyant production of u–w decreasing with increasing instability. In the v–w budget, shear production is zero by definition, while buoyancy displays very low-intensity fluctuations around zero. As local
free convection is approached, the turbulence becomes effectively axisymetrical, and a practical limit seems to exist beyond
which it is not possible to measure the u-w component accurately. 相似文献

Effects of heat and water vapor transport on eddy covariance measurement of CO2 fluxes 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Flux densities of carbon dioxide were measured over an arid, vegetation-free surface by eddy covariance techniques and by a heat budget-profile method, in which CO2 concentration gradients were specified in terms of mixing ratios. This method showed negligible fluxes of CO2, consistent with the bareness of the experimental site, whereas the eddy covariance measurements indicated large downward fluxes of CO2. These apparently conflicting observations are in quantitative agreement with the results of a recent theory which predicts that whenever there are vertical fluxes of sensible or latent heat, a mean vertical velocity is developed. This velocity causes a mean vertical convective mass flux (=
cw for CO2, in standard notation). The eddy covariance technique neglects this mean convective flux and measures only the turbulent flux
c w. Thus, when the net flux of CO2 is zero, the eddy covariance method indicates an apparent flux which is equal and opposite to the mean convective flux, i.e.,
c w = –
c w. Corrections for the mean convective flux are particularly significant for CO2 because
cw and
c w are often of similar magnitude. The correct measurement of the net CO2 flux by eddy covariance techniques requires that the fluxes of sensible and latent heat be measured as well. 相似文献

Flow distortion is a universal consideration in the measurement of wind. Usually the distortion results from deflection of the flow by the support. Instruments mounted on airplanes, however, experience an additional deflection associated with lift, which changes rapidly and continuously during flight. In front of the airplane, this deflection appears as upwash. Characteristic upwash contamination ranges from 0.5 to 2.5 m s-1, depending on wing loading, flight speed, and forward distance from the wing to the measurement location. On pressure-radome installations the distance from the wing is usually small and the potential for upwash contamination large. Sensors mounted at the end of long probes attached to smaller airplanes with light wing loading are less susceptible to upwash contamination. Since wing loading also depends on the local vertical wind velocity the upwash velocity is directly correlated with vertical wind velocity. Generally, empirical corrections are derived from flight tests. We develop a simple method from principles of aerodynamics which explains these corrections in terms of upwash. The applicability of our approach to moderate upwash is demonstrated with data collected from the NOAA Long-EZ research airplane. More severe upwash conditions require a more sophisticated correction beyond the scope of this paper, but basically derived from the same principles.Oak Ridge Associated Universities, assigned to NOAA/ATDD 相似文献

We question the correlation between vertical velocity (w) on the one hand and the occurrence of convective plumes in lidar reflectivity (i.e. range corrected backscatter signal Pz
2) and depolarization ratio (Δ) on the other hand in the convective boundary layer (CBL). Thermal vertical motion is directly
investigated using vertical velocities measured by a ground-based Doppler lidar operating at 2 μm. This lidar provides also
simultaneous measurements of lidar reflectivity. In addition, a second lidar 200 m away provides reflectivities at 0.53 and
1 μm and depolarization ratio at 0.53 μm. The time series from the two lidars are analyzed in terms of linear correlation
coefficient (ρ). The main result is that the plume-like structures provided by lidar reflectivity within the CBL as well as the CBL height
are not a clear signature of updrafts. It is shown that the lidar reflectivity within the CBL is frequently anti-correlated
(ρ (w, Pz
2 )) with the vertical velocity. On the contrary, the correlation coefficient between the depolarization ratio and the vertical
velocity ρ (w, Δ ) is always positive, showing that the depolarization ratio is a fair tracer of updrafts. The importance of relative humidity
on the correlation coefficient is discussed.

Summary In Southern Australia summertime deep cold fronts are frequently preceded by a shallow cold frontal line connected to a prefrontal
lower tropospheric trough. The advance of this line defines a “cool change” which in many cases causes severe weather events.
The goal of this paper is to analyze the multi-scale structure of these cool changes using aircraft observations and synoptic-scale
analyses. The aircraft measurements on cross-frontal tracks of horizontal lengths of up to 300 km are performed with an average
resolution of 3 to 4 m along the track. Thus a multi-scale analysis from micro-scale events up to the synoptic-scale phenomena
can be presented. All flights and thus all meso- and micro-scale analyses are performed over water only. The obviously very
different characteristics of the cool change structure elements over land are not investigated.
The synoptic analyses for one very typical case show a prefrontal trough as characterized by its position in relation to the
main deep cold front, its source region in Western Australia and its extent to the southeast. Fields of strong wind shear,
temperature gradients, vertical wind and Q-vectors are displayed.
The meso-β-scale x, z-cross-sections derived from two aircraft missions (data of the second one in brackets) show: a shallow cold front with a
160 (60) km wide transition zone in which the near surface potential temperature drops rather steadily by 9 °C (20 °C); a
shallow feeder flow topped by a strong inversion with a vertical gradient of potential temperature up to 5 °C/100 m between
the top of the feeder flow at 400 (200) m and 1500 (700) m; a cross-frontal circulation expressed by the ageostrophic wind
components u
ϕ,subscale and w with a center at 1200 m over the frontal edge of the feeder flow (for one mission only); a strong shear of the along-frontal
wind component v
ϕ with a large increase of the negative v
ϕ-values with height, which very well fits to the synoptic-scale view of the wave structure of the geostrophic wind (well-known
from the upper level synoptic charts) at different heights; a jet core of this along-frontal wind in the center of the cross-frontal
circulation, again for one mission only.
A very striking example of a micro-scale event is an approximately 1 km wide head of a frontal squall line. It shows dramatic
changes of all meteorological parameters. The event is displayed in a horizontal domain of 4 km with full resolution (∼ 4 m).
Derivatives of the measured parameters in the cross-frontal direction add information to the space series of the parameters
themselves. Deformation frontogenesis of potential temperature and specific humidity show very large values on the scale resolved
here. Fortunately the squall line could be sampled again at the same height, but in a somewhat degenerated state 1? h later.

During the Tropospheric Ozone Production about the Spring Equinox (TOPSE) program, aircraft flights during April 7–11, 2000
revealed a large area air mass capped below ∼500 m altitude over Hudson Bay, Canada in which ozone was reduced from normal
levels of 30–40 ppbv to as low as 0.5 ppbv. From some of the in-situ aircraft measurements, back-trajectory calculations,
the tropospheric column of BrO derived from GOME satellite measurements, and results from a regional model, we conclude that
the event did not originate from triggering of reactive halogen release in the sub-Arctic region of Hudson Bay but resulted
from such an event occurring at higher latitudes over the islands of the northern Canada Archipelago and nearby Arctic Ocean
with subsequent transport over a distance of 1,000–1,500 km to Hudson Bay. BrO
x
remained active during this transport despite considerable changes in the conditions of the underlying surface suggesting
that chemical recycling during transport dominated any local halogen input from the surface. If all of the tropospheric column
density of BrO is distributed uniformly within the surface layer, then the mixing ratio of BrO derived from the satellite
measurements is at least a factor of 2–3 larger than derived indirectly from in situ aircraft measurements of the NO/NO2 ratio. 相似文献
