We used chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetic calculations to model chemistry of the volatiles released by heating different types of carbonaceous, ordinary and enstatite chondritic material as a function of temperature and pressure. Our results predict the composition of atmospheres formed by outgassing during accretion of the Earth and other terrestrial planets. Outgassing of CI and CM carbonaceous chondritic material produces H2O-rich (steam) atmospheres in agreement with the results of impact experiments. However, outgassing of other types of chondritic material produces atmospheres dominated by other gases. Outgassing of ordinary (H, L, LL) and high iron enstatite (EH) chondritic material yields H2-rich atmospheres with CO and H2O being the second and third most abundant gases. Outgassing of low iron enstatite (EL) chondritic material gives a CO-rich atmosphere with H2, CO2, and H2O being the next most abundant gases. Outgassing of CV carbonaceous chondritic material gives a CO2-rich atmosphere with H2O being the second most abundant gas. Our results predict that the atmospheres formed during accretion of the Earth and Mars were probably H2-rich unless the accreted material was dominantly CI and CM carbonaceous chondritic material. We also predict significant amounts of S, P, Cl, F, Na, and K in accretionary atmospheres at high temperatures (1500-2500 K). Finally, our results may be useful for interpreting spectroscopic observations of accreting extrasolar terrestrial planets.  相似文献

Interference filter photometry was taken of Comet Encke on June 14, 1974 (1.07 AU heliocentric distance, postperihelion) at the CTIO (Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory) 150-cm reflector. Production rates were calculated of 4.1 × 1023 mol sec?1 of CN, 5.3 × 1023 mol sec?1 of C3, and 4.3 × 1024 mol sec?1 of C2. These are about three times smaller than at comparable heliocentric distance preperihelion, assuming a value of 100 for the ratio H2O/ (C2 + C3 + CN). An upper limit was placed on the production of nonvolatiles at about one-third that of volatiles in mass by assuming a bulk density of 1 g cm?3, a particle geometric albedo of 0.1, and a phase function of 0.2.  相似文献

A spectroscopic search for H2O and CH4 in Comet Kohoutek (1973f) was made using a Pepsios interferometer. No evidence was found for either molecule, allowing us to set an upper limit on their production rates (on about 21 January 1974) of Q(H2O) < 6.2 × 1028 sec?1 and Q(CH4) < 2.0 × 1030 sec?1. If the cometary surface is water-ice, this production rate leads to a product (1 ? A)·(πR02) < 2.2 km2, where A is the Bond albedo, R0 is the nuclear radius, and we assume that all the absorbed solar energy is used to evaporate H2O.  相似文献

We investigate the unsteady column accretion of material at a rate \(10^{15} g s^{ - 1} \leqslant \dot M \leqslant 10^{16} g s^{ - 1}\) onto the surface of a magnetized neutron star using a modified first-order Godunov method with splitting. We study the dynamics of the formation and evolution of a shock in an accretion column near the surface of a star with a magnetic field 5×1011B≤1013 G. An effective transformation of the accretion flow energy into cyclotron radiation is shown to be possible for unsteady accretion with a collisionless shock whose front executes damped oscillations. The collisionless deceleration of the accreting material admits the conservation of a fraction of the heavy nuclei that have not been destroyed in spallation reactions. The fraction of the CNO nuclei that reach the stellar atmosphere is shown to depend on the magnetic field strength of the star.  相似文献

We report the detection of series of close type I X-ray bursts consisting of two or three events with a recurrence time much shorter than the characteristic (at the observed mean accretion rate) time of matter accumulation needed for a thermonuclear explosion to be initiated on the neutron star surface during the JEM-X/INTEGRAL observations of several X-ray bursters. We show that such series of bursts are naturally explained in the model of a spreading layer of accreting matter over the neutron star surface in the case of a sufficiently high (? ? 1 × 10?9 M yr?1) accretion rate (corresponding to a mean luminosity L tot ? 1 × 1037erg s?1). The existence of triple bursts requires some refinement of the model—the importance of a central ring zone is shown. In the standard model of a spreading layer no infall of matter in this zone is believed to occur.  相似文献

Nonthermal escape processes responsible for the escape of hydrogen and deuterium from Venus are examined for present and past atmospheres. Three mechanisms are important for the escape of hydrogen from the present atmosphere: (a) charge exchange of plasmaspheric H+ with exospheric H, (b) impact of exospheric hot O atoms on H, and (c) ion molecule reactions involving O+ and H2. However, in the past when the H abundance was higher, the charge-exchange mechanism would be the strongest. The H escape flux increases rapidly with increasing hydrogen abundance in the upper atmosphere and saturates at a value of 1 × 1010 cm?2 sec?1 emerging primarily from the day side when the H mixing ratio at the homopause is 2 × 10?3. This corresponds to an H2O mixing ratio of 1 × 10?3 at the cold trap and ~15% at the surface. Deuterium would also escape by the charge-exchange mechanism and a D/H enrichment by a factor of ~1000 over the nonthermal escape regime is expected, which could have lasted over the last 3 billion years. Coincidentally, the onset of hydrodynamic flow leading to efficient H escape occurs just at the H2O mixing ratio at which the charge-exchange escape flux saturates. Thus it is possible that Venus has lost an Earth-equivalent ocean of water over geologic time. If so, either the D/H enrichment has been kept low by modest outgassing of juvenile water or Venus started out with a D/H ratio of ~4.0 × 10?6.  相似文献

Photostimulated oxidation weathering irreversibly removes both oxygen and hydrogen from the atmosphere at a rate of 108 to 1011 cm?2sec?1. This corresponds to a net loss of 1025 to 1028 molecules cm?2 (102 to 105 g cm?2 of H2O, assuming a uniform rate over geologic time. Additional H2O is removed through hydration of Fe2O3 and clay minerals, but the loss is reversible and the extent of regolith storage is uncertain. CO2 is irreversibly removed from the atmosphere through the formation of CaCO3 at a rate of 107?1010cm?2sec?1. Over geologic time this corresponds to a net loss of 1024?1027 molecules cm?2 (101?104g cm?2) of CO2. Previously, it was proposed that exospheric escape was the principal irreversible volatile sink, amounting to only 102g cm?2 of H2O and 100g cm?2 of CO2 over geologic time. A recent tentative identification of abundant argon on Mars suggests that the planet may have degassed up to 105g cm?2 of H2O and 104g cm?2 of CO2. If the amounts of H2O and CO2 removed by photostimulated oxidation are close to the upper limits proposed here, it is possible that chemical weathering may have had a major effect on limiting the supply of H2O and CO2 trapped in the regolith and polar caps.  相似文献

A model is presented for the photochemistry of PH3 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Saturn that includes the effects of coupling with NH3 and hydrocarbon photochemistry, specifically the C2H2 catalyzed photodissociation of CH4. PH3 is rapidly depleted with altitude (scale height ~35 km) in the upper troposphere when K~104cm2sec?1; an upper limit for K at the tropopause is estimated at ~105cm2sec?1. If there is no gas phase P2H4 because of sublimation, P2 and P4 formation is unlikely unless the rate of the spin-forbidden recombination reaction PH + H2 + M → PH3 + M is exceedingly slow. An upper limit P4 column density of ~2×1015cm?2 is estimated in the limit of no recombination. If sublimation does not remove all gas phase P2H4, P2 and P4 may be produced in potentially larger quantities, although they would be restricted almost entirely to the lowest levels of our model, where T?100°K. Potentially observable amounts of the organophosphorus compounds CH3P2H2 and HCP are predicted, with column densities of >1017 cm?2 and production rates of ~2×108cm?2sec?1. The possible importance of electronically excited states of PHx and additional PH3/hydrocarbon photochemical coupling paths are also considered.  相似文献

We show that the surface of a planet growing by planetesimal impact is heated over the melting temperature of the surface materials due to the blanketing effect of an impact induced H2O atmosphere with the present H2O abundance of the Earth even when the accretion time is as long as 108 years. Hence, a magma ocean covering the entire surface was formed on the Earth and Moon and other terrestrial planets during their formations.  相似文献

Two monochromatic pictures of the Comet Kohoutek (1973f) were taken on January 15, 1974 in the resonance light (A2Σ ? X2 ∏) of the radical OH with a photographic telescope placed on board the NASA 990 Convair airplane. From an intensity profile we derive the production rate of OH radicals QOH = 4 xsx 1028 moleculesec ?1sr?1 at 0.6 AU and the lifetime of the OH radical which is τOH = 4.5 × 104 sec at 0.6 AU. This short lifetime (very similar to the lifetime of H2O) combined with the high total production rate of gas in comets can explain the observed velocity of 8km sec?1 for the H-atoms: The H-atoms produced by photodissociation of H2O are thermalized at short distancesfrom the nucleus; the H-atoms produced by photodissociation of OH have a velocity of ?8km sec?1 and can reach the outer part of the hydrogen envelope.  相似文献

We present the results of our studies of the aperiodic optical flux variability for SS Cyg, an accreting binary systemwith a white dwarf. The main set of observational data presented here was obtained with the ANDOR/iXon DU-888 photometer mounted on the RTT-150 telescope, which allowed a record (for CCD photometers) time resolution up to 8 ms to be achieved. The power spectra of the source’s flux variability have revealed that the aperiodic variability contains information about the inner boundary of the optically thick flow in the binary system. We show that the inner boundary of the optically thick accretion disk comes close to the white dwarf surface at the maximum of the source’s bolometric light curve, i.e., at the peak of the instantaneous accretion rate onto the white dwarf, while the optically thick accretion disk is truncated at distances 8.5 × 109 cm ∼10R WD in the low state. We suggest that the location of the inner boundary of the accretion disk in the binary can be traced by studying the parameters of the power spectra for accreting white dwarfs. In particular, this allows the mass of the accreting object to be estimated.  相似文献

We analytically generalize the well-known solution of steady supersonic spherically symmetric gas accretion onto a star (Bondi 1952) for an iron atmosphere with completely degenerate electrons with an arbitrary degree of relativity. This solution is used for typical physical conditions in the vicinity of protoneutron stars produced by gravitational collapse with masses M 0=(1.4?1.8)M and over a wide range of nonzero “iron gas” densities at infinity, ρ=(104?5×106)g cm?3. Under these conditions, we determine all accretion parameters, including the accretion rate, whose value is ~(10?50)M s?1 at M 0=1.8M (it is a factor of 1.7 lower for M 0=1.4M , because the accretion rate is exactly ∝M 0 2 ). We take into account the effect of accreting-gas rotation in a quasi-one-dimensional approximation, which has generally proved to be marginal with respect to the accretion rate.  相似文献

Density profiles for CO, O, and O2 in the Cytherean atmosphere above 90 km are plotted with eddy diffusion coefficient (K) as a parameter, subject to the constraint that the mixing ratios of CO and O2 approach their observed value or values under the observed upper limit at the lower boundary. It is then shown that the value of K puts upper limits on the amount of hydrogen (in the form of H2O, HCl, and H2) the atmosphere near 90km can contain. This value is a function of the density and temperature of hydrogen at the critical level and the magnitude of the total escape flux, where unspecified flux mechanisms other than thermal are postulated ad hoc. In general these constraints call for large values of K to accomodate the atomic hydrogen produced by measured mixing ratios of HCl and H2O. Hence they constrain thee amount of O in the upper atmosphere to values well under 1% at 130 km unless there are very large hydrogen escape fluxes, 107 cm?2sec?1 or larger. The freedom to assume arbitrary amounts of H2 in the atmosphere is also restricted. We suggest either very effective escape mechanisms—despite low exospheric hydrogen densities—or novel excitation mechanisms for O(33S) and O(35S) in the upper atmosphere.  相似文献

Observations of Mars and cosmochemical considerations imply that the total inventory of degassed volatiles on Mars is 102 to 103 times that present in Mars' atmosphere and polar caps. The degassed volatiles have been physically and chemically incorporated into a layer of unconsolidated surface rubble (a “megaregolith”) up to 2km thick. Tentative lines of evidence suggest a high concentration (~5g/cm2) of 40 Ar in the atmosphere of Mars. If correct, this would be consistent with a degassing model for Mars in which the Martian “surface” volatile inventory is presumed identical to that of Earth but scaled to Mars' smaller mass and surface area. The implied inventory would be: (40Ar) = 4g/cm2, (H2O) = 1 × 105g/cm2, (CO2) = 7 × 103g/cm2, (N2) = 3 × 102g/cm2, (Cl) = 2 × 103g/cm2, and (S) = 2 × 102g/cm2. Such a model is useful for testing, but differences in composition and planetary energy history may be anticipated between Mars and Earth on theoretical grounds. Also, the model demands huge regolith sinks for the volatiles listed. If the regolith were in physical equilibrium with the atmosphere, as much as 2 × 104g/cm2 of H2O could be stored in it as hard-frozen permafrost, or 5 × 104g/cm2 if equilibrium with the atmosphere were inhibited. Spectral measurements of Martian regolith material and laboratory measurement of weathering kinetics on simulated regolith material suggest large amounts of hydrated iron oxides and clay minerals exist in the regolith; the amount of chemically bound H2O could be from 1 × 104 to 4 × 104g/cm2. In an Earth-analogous model, a 2 km mixed regolith must contain the following concentrations of other volatile-containing compounds by weight: carbonates = 1.5%, nitrates = 0·3%, chlorides = 0.6%, and sulfates = 0.1%. Such concentrations would be undetectable by current Earth-based spectral reflectance measurements, and (except the nitrates) formation of the “required” amounts of these compounds could result from interaction of adsorbed H2O and ice with primary silicates expected on Mars. Most of the CO2 could be physically adsorbed on the regolith. Thus, maximum amounts of H2O and other volatiles which could be stored in the Mars regolith are marginally compatible with those required by an Earth-analogous model, although a lower atmospheric 40Ar concentration and regolith volatile inventory would be easier to reconcile with observational constraints. Differences in the ratios of H2O and other volatiles to 40Ar between surface volatiles on the real Mars and on an Earth-analogous Mars could result from and reflect differences in bulk composition and time history of degassing between Mars and Earth. Models relating Viking-observable parameters, e.g., (40Ar) and (36Ar), to the time history and overall intensity of Mars degassing are given.  相似文献

The results of a non-LTE analysis of a number of spectral lines formed in the accreting envelopes of UX Ori stars are given. The accretion rate is estimated from an analysis of the first three lines of the Balmer series: M a = 10?8 ?10?9 M The gas temperature in this region is about 10,000 K. In the immediate vicinity of the star there is a hotter region, with T > 15,000 K, in which the 5876 Å line of neutral helium, observed in the spectra of these stars, is formed. The region of formation of this line has a small geometrical thickness, covers a small fraction of the star’s visible disk, and evidently consists of the site of contact of the accreting gas with the stellar surface. The low gas rotation rates in this region (150–200 km/sec) may mean that rapid rotation of the accreting gas is damped by the star’s magnetic field, which is strong enough to affect the gas stream. We estimate the magnetic field strength in this region to be about 150 G.  相似文献

Altitude dependences of [CO2] and [CO2+] are deduced from Mariner 6 and 7 CO2+ airglow measurements. CO2 densities are also obtained from ne radio occultation measurements. Both [CO2] profiles are similar and correspond to the model atmosphere of Barth et al. (1972) at 120 km, but at higher altitudes they diverge and at 200–220 km the obtained [CO2] values are three times less the model. Both the airglow and radio occultation observations show that a correction factor of 2.5 should be included into the values for solar ionization flux given by Hinteregger (1970). The ratio of [CO2+]/ne is 0.15–0.2 and, hence, [O]/[CO2] is ~3% at 135 km. An atmospheric and ionospheric model is developed for 120–220 km. The calculated temperature profile is characterized by a value of T ≈ 370°K at h ? 220 km, a steep gradient (~2°/km) at 200-160 km, a bend in the profile at 160 km, a small gradient (~0.7°/km) below and a value of T ≈ 250°K at 120 km. The upper point agrees well with the results of the Lyman-α measurements; the steep gradient may be explained by molecular viscosity dissipation of gravity and acoustical waves (the corresponding energy flux is 4 × 10?2 erg cm?2sec?1 at 180 km). The bend at 160 km may be caused by a sharp decrease of the eddy diffusion coefficient and defines K ≈ 2 × 108cm2sec?1; and the low gradient gives an estimate of the efficiency of the atmosphere heating by the solar radiation as ? ≈ 0.1.  相似文献

We are studying the young clusters Tr37 and NGC7160 in the Cep OB2 region as part of a program to understand the evolution of accretion disks at the ages of disk dissipation and planet formation. Here, we present the first identifications of low mass (spectral types K-M) members of the clusters and study the presence and characteristics of their accretion disks, finding evidences of disk evolution. Using optical photometry and spectroscopy, we have identified ~70 members in Tr37 and ~20 in NGC7160, confirming age estimates of 3 and 10 Myr respectively. Accretion rates are ~10?8 M yr?1 in Tr37. We have not found any accreting members in NGC7160, suggesting that disk accretion generally ends before the age of 10 Myr, which is consistent with the results from other populations.  相似文献

Modeling of the geometric albedo of Uranus in and near prominent methane absorption bands between 0.5 and 0.9 μm indicates that the visible atmosphere probably consists of a thin aerosol haze layer (τscat ? 0.3?0.5; ωH ? 0.95) above an optically thick, semi-infinite Rayleigh scattering atmosphere. A significant depletion of methane gas above the haze layer is indicated. The mixing ratio of methane in the lower atmosphere is consistent with a value of CH4/H2 ? 3 × 10?3, comparable to those derived for Jupiter and Saturn.  相似文献

I review various phenomena associated with mass‐accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in the view of supersoft X‐ray sources. When the mass‐accretion rate is low (acc < a few × 10–7 M⊙yr–1), hydrogen nuclear burning is unstable and nova outbursts occur. A nova is a transient supersoft X‐ray source (SSS) in its later phase which timescale depends strongly on the WD mass. The X‐ray turn on/off time is a good indicator of the WD mass. At an intermediate mass‐accretion rate an accreting WD becomes a persistent SSS with steady hydrogen burning. For a higher mass‐accretion rate, the WD undergoes “accretion wind evolution” in which the WD accretes matter from the equatorial plane and loses mass by optically thick winds from the other directions. Two SSS, namely RX J0513‐6951 and V Sge, are corresponding objects to this accretion wind evolution. We can specify mass increasing WDs from light‐curve analysis based on the optically thick wind theory using multiwavelength observational data including optical, IR, and supersoft X‐rays. Mass estimates of individual objects give important information for the binary evolution scenario of type Ia supernovae (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Measurements made during the Mariner 10 flybys of Mercury have shown that this planet has a tenuous atmosphere, somewhat similar to that of the Moon, which consists of at least helium and can be classified as an exosphere. The amount of helium observed can be supplied by either the accretion of only a fraction of the solar wind He2+ diffusing across the magnetopause, or from outgassing of radiogenic helium from the planetary crust. The role of solar wind in the maintenance and depletion of Mercury's atmosphere is discussed in view of the density upper limits established from Mariner 10. The argon supply rate on Mercury is probably not more than that on the Earth, but it is difficult to say whether Mercury is deficient in potassium or not on the basis of the present data. The global outgassing of CO2 and H2O from the planet interior is estimated to be at least four orders of magnitude smaller than for Earth which indicates that either Mercury is deficient in volatiles or that this planet is very inactive.  相似文献
