A Monte Carlo program by Thomason and Krider has been adapted to the Venus cloud geometry and optical properties. If lightning flashes occur within or just below the clouds, the fraction of photons of visible light escaping to space is 0.1–0.4, depending on the location of the flash. For flashes near the surface, only one blue photon in 104 was found to escape; about 5% of the red ones are transmitted. Failure of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter to unambiguously detect optical lightning signals from space is not due to attenuation by the atmosphere and clouds. In any case, lightning is not acceptable as an explanation for ashen light.  相似文献

We have constructed a model of the physical processes controlling Titan's clouds. Our model produces clouds that qualitatively match the present observational constraints in a wide variety of model atmospheres, including those with low atmospheric pressures (25 mbar) and high atmospheric pressures. We find the following: (1) high atmospheric temperatures (160°K) are important so that there is a large scale height in the first few optical depths of cloud; (2) the aerosol mass production occurs at very low aerosol optical depth so that the cloud particles do not directly affect the photochemistry producing them; (3) the production rate of aerosol mass by chemical processes is probably greater than 3.5 × 10?14 g cm?2 sec?1; (4) and the eddy diffusion coefficient is less than 5 × 106 cm2 sec?1 except perhaps in the top optical depth of the cloud. Our model is not extremely sensitive to particle shape, but it is sensitive to particle density. Higher particle densities require larger aerosol mass production rates to produce satisfactory clouds. Particle densities of unity require a mass production rate on the order of 3.5 × 10?13 g cm?2 sec?1. We also show that an increase in mass input causes a decrease in the mean particle size, as required by J. B. Pollack et al. (1980, Geophys. Res. Lett. 7, 829–832), to explain the observed correlation between the solar cycle and Titan's albedo; that coagulation need not be extremely inefficient in order to obtain realistic clouds as proposed by M. Podolak and E. Podolak (1980, Icarus43, 73–83); that coagulation could be inefficient due to photoelectric charging of the particles; and, that the lifetime of particles near the altitude of unit optical depth is a few months, as required to explain the temporal variability observed by S. T. Suess and G. W. Lockwood and D. P. Cruikshank and J. S. Morgan (1979, Bull. Amer. Astron. Soc.11, 564). Although Titan's aerosols are ottically thick in the vertical direction, the atmosphere is so extended that the horizontal visibility is greater than that found anywhere at Earth's surface.  相似文献

We have measured the shape and absolute value of Venus' reflectivity spectrum in the 1.2-to 4.0-μm spectral region with a circular variable filter wheel spectrometer having a spectral resolution of 1.5%. The instrument package was mounted on the 91-cm telescope of NASA Ames Kuiper Airborne Observatory, and the measurements were obtained at an altitude of about 41,000 feet, when Venus had a phase angle of 86°. Comparing these spectra with synthetic spectra generated with a multiple-scattering computer code, we infer a number of properties of the Venus clouds. We obtain strong confirmatory evidence that the clouds are made of a water solution of sulfuric acid in their top unit optical depth and find that the clouds are made of this material down to an optical depth of at least 25. In addition, we determine that the acid concentration is 84 ± 2% H2SO4 by weight in the top unit optical depth, that the total optical depth of the clouds is 37.5 ± 12.5, and that the cross-sectional weighted mean particle radius lies between 0.5 and 1.4 μm in the top unit optical depth of the clouds. These results have been combined with a recent determination of the location of the clouds' bottom boundary [Marov et al., Cosmic Res.14, 637–642 (1976)] to infer additional properties about Venus' atmosphere. We find that the average volume mixing ratio of H2SO4 and H2O contained in the cloud material both equal approximately 2× 10?6. Employing vapor pressure arguments, we show that the acid concentration equals 84 ± 6% at the cloud bottom and that the water vapor mixing ratio beneath the clouds lies between 6 × 10?4 and 10?2.  相似文献

Photographic observations of the nightside of Jupiter by the Voyager 1 spacecraft show the presence of extensive lightning activity. Detection of whistlers by the plasma wave analyzer confirms the optical observations and implies that many flashes were not recorded by the Voyager camera because the intensity of the flashes was below the threshold sensitivity of the camera. Measurements of the optical energy radiated per flash indicate that the observed flashes had energies similar to that for terrestrial superbolts. The best estimate of the lightning energy dissipation rate of 0.4 × 10?3 W/m2 was derived from a consideration of the optical and radiofrequency measurements. The ratio of the energy dissipated by lightning compared to the convective energy flux is estimated to be between 0.27 × 10?4 and 0.5 × 10?4. The terrestrial value is 1 × 10?4.  相似文献

Radio waves and optical flashes consistent with the lightning generation have been reported frequently at Venus. These observations point to the presence of electrical discharges in the sulfuric acid clouds of Venus. A particularly strong whistler-mode signal has been found propagating parallel to the magnetic field in the night ionosphere near 100 Hz by the Pioneer Venus spacecraft. At high (radio) frequencies, intermittent signals are also seen reminiscent of terrestrial lightning. However, these signals appear to be weaker than their terrestrial counterparts. On Venus Express, the magnetometer bandwidth is sufficient to record the lightning signals propagating in the whistler mode and will be used to map the occurrence of lightning across the nightside of the planet.  相似文献

The effects of the newly discovered thunderstorms on Venus upon the nitrogen and carbon species in its atmosphere were calculated. An Earth-like lightning frequency of 100 sec?1 was used for Venus, in accord with recent optical measurements by Pioneer-Venus (W. J. Borucki, J. W. Dyer, G. Z. Thomas, J. C. Jordon, and D. A. Comstock, submitted for publication). The rate of NO production by thunder shock waves, 2.5 × 1011 g year?1, is about an order of magnitude smaller than on the Earth. But on Venus, in the absence of precipitation, which is the major removal mechanism of odd nitrogen from the Earth's atmosphere, the mixing ratios of odd nitrogen species might be considerably higher. The global CO production is governed by CO2 photolysis rather than by CO2 pyrolysis by lightning. However, thunderstorms produce about 2.5 × 1011 g year?1 of CO in the cloud layer, far from the high altitude CO2 photolysis region.  相似文献

The four entry probes of the Pioneer Venus mission measured the radiative net flux in the atmosphere of Venus at latitudes of 60°N, 31°S, 27°S, and 4°N. The three higher latitude probes carried instruments (small probe net flux radiometers; SNFR) with external sensors. The measured SNFR net fluxes are too large below the clouds, but an error source and correction scheme have been found (H. E. Revercomb, L. A. Sromovsky, and V. E. Suomi, 1982, Icarus52, 279–300). The near-equatorial probe carried an infrared radiometer (LIR) which viewed the atmosphere through a window in the probe. The LIR measurements are reasonable in the clouds, but increase to physically unreasonable levels shortly below the clouds. The probable error source and a correction procedure are identified. Three main conclusions can be drawn from comparisons of the four corrected flux profiles with radiative transfer calculations: (1) thermal net fluxes for the sounder probe do not require a reduction in the Mode 3 number density as has been suggested by O. B. Toon, B. Ragent, D. Colburn, J. Blamont, and C. Cot (1984, Icarus57, 143–160), but the probe measurements as a whole are most consistent with a significantly reduced mode 3 contribution to the cloud opacity; (2) at all probe sites, the fluxes imply that the upper cloud contains a yet undetected source of IR opacity; and (3) beneath the clouds the fluxes at a given altitude increase with latitude, suggesting greater IR cooling below the clouds at high latitudes and water vapor mixing ratios of about 2–5 × 10?5 near 60°, 2–5 × 10?4 near 30°, and 5 × 10?4 near the equator. The suggested latitudinal variation of IR cooling is consistent with descending motions at high latitudes, and it is speculated that it could provide an important additional drive for the general circulation.  相似文献

High-resolution spectra of Venus and Mars at the NO fundamental band at 5.3 μm with resolving power ν/δν=76,000 were acquired using the TEXES spectrograph at NASA IRTF on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The observed spectrum of Venus covered three NO lines of the P-branch. One of the lines is strongly contaminated, and the other two lines reveal NO in the lower atmosphere at a detection level of 9 sigma. A simple photochemical model for NO and N at 50-112 km was coupled with a radiative transfer code to simulate the observed equivalent widths of the NO and some CO2 lines. The derived NO mixing ratio is 5.5±1.5 ppb below 60 km and its flux is . Predissociation of NO at the (0-0) 191 nm and (1-0) 183 nm bands of the δ-system and the reaction with N are the only important loss processes for NO in the lower atmosphere of Venus. The photochemical impact of the measured NO abundance is significant and should be taken into account in photochemical modeling of the Venus atmosphere. Lightning is the only known source of NO in the lower atmosphere of Venus, and the detection of NO is a convincing and independent proof of lightning on Venus. The required flux of NO is corrected for the production of NO and N by the cosmic ray ionization and corresponds to the lightning energy deposition of . For a flash energy on Venus similar to that on the Earth (∼109 J), the global flashing rate is ∼90 s−1 and ∼6 km−2 y−1 which is in reasonable agreement with the existing optical observations. The observed spectrum of Mars covered three NO lines of the R-branch. Two of these lines are contaminated by CO2 lines, and the line at 1900.076 cm−1 is clean and shows some excess over the continuum. Some photochemical reactions may result in a significant excitation of NO (v=1) in the lowest 20 km on Mars. However, quenching of NO (v=1) by CO2 is very effective below 40 km. Excitation of NO (v=1) in the collisions with atomic oxygen is weak because of the low temperature in the martian atmosphere, and we do not see any explanation of a possible emission of NO at 5.3 μm. Therefore the data are treated as the lack of absorption with a 2 sigma upper limit of 1.7 ppb to the NO abundance in the lower atmosphere of Mars. This limit is above the predictions of photochemical models by a factor of 3.  相似文献

The Venus Climate Orbiter mission (PLANET-C), one of the future planetary missions of Japan, aims at understanding the atmospheric circulation of Venus. Meteorological information will be obtained by globally mapping clouds and minor constituents successively with four cameras at ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, detecting lightning with a high-speed imager, and observing the vertical structure of the atmosphere with radio science technique. The equatorial elongated orbit with westward revolution fits the observation of the movement and temporal variation of the atmosphere which as a whole rotates westward. The systematic, continuous imaging observations will provide us with an unprecedented large data set of the Venusian atmospheric dynamics. Additional targets of the mission are the exploration of the ground surface and the observation of zodiacal light. The mission will complement the ESA's Venus Express, which also explores the Venusian environment with different approaches.  相似文献

We present submillimeter observations of 12CO J=3-2 and 2-1, and 13CO J=2-1 lines of the Venusian mesosphere and lower thermosphere with the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (HHSMT) taken around the second MESSENGER flyby of Venus on 5 June 2007. The observations cover a range of Venus solar elongations with different fractional disk illuminations. Preliminary results like temperature and CO abundance profiles are presented. These data are part of a coordinated observational campaign in support of the ESA Venus Express mission. Furthermore, this study attempts to contribute to cross-calibrate space- and ground-based observations, to constrain radiative transfer and retrieval algorithms for planetary atmospheres, and to a more thorough understanding of the global patters of circulation of the Venusian atmosphere.  相似文献

Polarimetry is able to show direct evidence for compositional differences in the Venus clouds. We present observations (collected during 212 Venus years by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter) of the polarization in four colors of the bright and dark ultraviolet features. We find that the polarization is significantly different between the bright and dark areas. The data show that the “null” model of L. W. Esposito (1980, J. Geophys. Res.85, 8151–8157) and the “overlying haze” model of J. B. Pollack et al. (1980, J. Geophys. Res.85, 8223–8231) are insufficient. Exact calculations of the polarization, including multiple scattering and vertical inhomogeneity near the Venus cloud tops, are able to match the observations. Our results give a straightforward interpretation of the polarization differences in terms of known constituents of the Venus atmosphere. The submicron haze and uv absorbers are anticorrelated: for haze properties as given by K. Kawabata et al. (1980, J. Geophys. Res.85, 8129–8140) the excess haze depth at 9350 Å over the bright regions is Δτh = 0.03 ± 0.02. The cloud top is slightly lower in the dark features: the extra optical depth at 2700 Å in Rayleigh scattering above the darker areas is ΔτR = 0.010 ± 0.005. This corresponds to a height difference of 1.2 ± 0.6 km at the cloud tops. The calculated polarization which matches our data also explains the relative polarization of bright and dark features observed by Mariner 10. The observed differential polarization cannot be explained by differential distribution of haze, if the haze aerosols have an effective size of 0.49 μm, as determined by K. Kawabata et al. (1982, submitted) for the aerosols overlying the Venus equator. We propose two models for the uv contrasts consistent with our results. In a physical model, the dark uv regions are locations of vertical convergence and horizontal divergence. In a chemical model, we propose that the photochemistry is limited by local variations in water vapor and molecular oxygen. The portions of the atmosphere where these constituents are depleted at the cloud tops are the dark uv features. Strong support for this chemical explanation is the observation that the number of sulfur atoms above the cloud tops is equal over both the bright and dark areas. The mass budget of sulfur at these altitudes is balanced between excess sulfuric acid haze over the bright regions and excess SO2 in the dark regions.  相似文献

A brief survey is given of the observational data on wind speeds in the atmosphere of Venus, as well as results of the theory of similitude and of a scale analysis for estimation of the wind speeds and temperature contrasts. It is shown that, in the lower portion of the atmosphere, containing roughly half of the mass, the first method produces results which are in somewhat better agreement with the measurements. Measurements of the wind distribution in the atmosphere are discussed. It is shown that, in the slowly rotating atmosphere of Venus, we should expect the Solberg mechanism of inertial instability of the circulation to be effective with respect to axisymmetrical perturbations. The numerical experiments of G.P. Williams (1968, J. Atmos. Sci., 25, 34–1045; 1970, Geophys. Fluid Dyn., 1, 357–369) indicate that in this case the circulation in the meridional plane can be broken down into a series of forward and reverse cells. The existence of such cells can serve to preserve the angular momentum of the planet with its atmosphere—the total momentum of the atmospheric frictional forces against the surface should on the average equal zero. This supports the hypothesis of G. Schubert et al. (1980, J. Geophys. Res., 85, 8007–8025) concerning the multicellular structure of the meridional circulation. Data are analyzed with regard to the time variability of the circulation. If the angular momentum of Venus′ atmosphere can change by 30% (which is not excluded by the presently available data; in Earth's atmosphere seasonal variations of the momentum reach 50%), then the relative variations in the length of a Venusian day will attain 10?3, i.e., several hours. The surface boundary layer is considered. It is shown that, due to the small transparency of the atmosphere to thermal radiation, heat transfer between the surface and the atmosphere should basically take place by turbulent heat exchange. The basic parameters of the dynamic and thermal regimes of this layer are estimated. Questions of light refraction in the boundary layer are discussed. A strict theory of refraction, developed for these conditions, confirms the preliminary rough estimates of V.I. Moroz (1976, Cosmic Res., 14, No. 5, 691–692; Space Sci. Rev., 25, 3–127), viz, that the horizon is visible on the panorama at a distance of order 100m, due to a relatively sharp negative gradient near the surface.  相似文献

The possibilities of lightning generation on other planets are considered, and the basic conditions that exist in terrestrial clouds during lightning discharges and the various theories of charge separation are reviewed. Recent measurements of cloud structure and whistlers, as well as optical observation of lightning on Jupiter, suggest that charge separation and lightning discharges occur on other planets in ways similar to those in which they occur on Earth. Using these terrestrial ideas, it is concluded that lightning on Venus will probably be found in clouds that are located in regions of convection such as those observed downwind of the subsolar point. It is also possible that if volcanoes on Venus are erupting, they too can produce lightning discharges in their plumes although it seems unlikely that this process can account for the observed rate of discharge. Jovian lightning is most probably generated in the lower water-ice clouds. These clouds are of moderate temperatures and have strong convection and large mass loading, all important ingredients for electrical buildup. Lightning is all but ruled out for Mars, even though some electrification is possible owing to the large dust storms on that planet.  相似文献

Four surveys in which the geometrical parameters were suitable for observations on weak scattering objects were carried out by the Venera 9, 10 orbiters using 3000–8000 Å spectrometers. The results of one survey can be explained by a dust layer at the height of sighting h = 100–700 km. Its absence in other sessions suggests a ring structure. The spectrum of dust scattering is a power function of the wavelength with the index varying from ?2.1 at 100km to ?1.3 at 500km. A method is proposed for obtaining the optical thickness, density and size distribution of dust particles from the scattering spectra. For m > 10?14 g the number of dust particles with a mass higher than m is proportional to m?1.3. The radial optical thickness τ is 0.7 × 10?5 at 5000 Å assuming the geometric thickness δ to be 100 km. The maximum optical thickness along the normal to the plane of the ring is τn = 4 × 10?6. The mass of the ring is 20 tons or 5 × 10?3 g cm?1 per unit circumference length; the maximum mass in a column normal to the ring plane is 10?10g cm?2; the maximum density (for δ = 100 km) is 10?17 g cm?3. A satellite of Venus gradually destroyed by temperature effects and by meteorite streams and plasma fluxes is suggested as the source of dust in the ring. One of 1 km radius could sustain such a ring for a billion years. The zodiacal light intensity near Venus is estimated.  相似文献

The Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on board the ESA/Venus Express mission has technical specifications well suited for many science objectives of Venus exploration. VIRTIS will both comprehensively explore a plethora of atmospheric properties and processes and map optical properties of the surface through its three channels, VIRTIS-M-vis (imaging spectrometer in the 0.3–1 μm range), VIRTIS-M-IR (imaging spectrometer in the 1–5 μm range) and VIRTIS-H (aperture high-resolution spectrometer in the 2–5 μm range). The atmospheric composition below the clouds will be repeatedly measured in the night side infrared windows over a wide range of latitudes and longitudes, thereby providing information on Venus's chemical cycles. In particular, CO, H2O, OCS and SO2 can be studied. The cloud structure will be repeatedly mapped from the brightness contrasts in the near-infrared night side windows, providing new insights into Venusian meteorology. The global circulation and local dynamics of Venus will be extensively studied from infrared and visible spectral images. The thermal structure above the clouds will be retrieved in the night side using the 4.3 μm fundamental band of CO2. The surface of Venus is detectable in the short-wave infrared windows on the night side at 1.01, 1.10 and 1.18 μm, providing constraints on surface properties and the extent of active volcanism. Many more tentative studies are also possible, such as lightning detection, the composition of volcanic emissions, and mesospheric wave propagation.  相似文献

Terrestrial lightning is generated by the separation of electric charge residing on water-ice particles in clouds, a few kilometers above the electrically conducting surface of the Earth. It is detected optically, electromagnetically, and aurally. The majority of discharges occur within or between clouds with about one third discharging to the surface of the Earth. Upward-propagating lightning also occurs with effects extending into the ionosphere. On Venus, the clouds are close to 50 km above the surface of the planet, where the temperatures and pressures are near those of Earth’s surface. In contrast the atmospheric pressure near the surface of Venus is nearly 100 times that of Earth. Thus, while intra- and inter-cloud lightning is expected to occur in a manner similar to that on Earth, we do not expect discharges from the clouds to the surface to occur. Upward-going lightning may be more frequent at Venus because the ionosphere is closer to the clouds. As at Earth, Venus lightning has been detected optically and electromagnetically from a variety of platforms. We find that some of the observed properties of lightning are different at the two planets. Many of the differences in the electromagnetic waves detected by spacecraft can be attributed to effects during ionospheric propagation to the spacecraft. We review the differences in the ionospheres of Earth and Venus and how they affect observations. We use both the Pioneer Venus electric antenna observations as well as the Venus Express magnetic measurements.  相似文献

The infrared flux of Venus has been observed with a narrowband filter (λ = 3.6 μm, Δλ = 0.08 μm) from 1982 through 1984, covering a range of the phase angle α from 27 to 94°. Normalized values of flux at the Venus-Earth distance of 1 AU were (4.0–5.4) × 10?17W/cm2/cm?1 and the α dependence of the data is rather weak. Furthermore, when the evening terminator of Venus was seen, lower values of flux were obtained in contrast with higher values at the morning terminator. The α dependence is quite different from that of J.V. Martonchik and R. Beer (1975, J. Atmos. Sci.32, 1151–1156). Since we cannot find any significant problem in the two observational methods, the difference might suggest an intrinsic time variation of haze particles during these 10 years in the upper haze layer of the Venus cloud.  相似文献

We have analyzed the P6, P8, and P10 lines in the 0.7820 μm CO2 band of Venus using a scattering model. Our new results compare favorably with previous results from the 1.05 μm CO2 band. We considered nonabsorbing and absorbing clouds. We found that the anisotropic scattering mean free path for both models at the 0.2atm level is between 0.55 and 0.73km, a range close to the value of 1 km for terrestrial hazes. We used our scattering models to synthesize the 0.8226 μm H2O line, assuming that the clouds are composed of sulfuric acid drops, and found our nonabsorbing cloud required a sulfuric acid concentration of 82% by weight, while our thicker absorbing cloud required a concentration of 89%. A comparison of the variation of optical depth with height for our cloud models with the variation reported by Prinn (1973, Science182, 1132–1134) showed that, within a factor of 2, the variation for Prinn's thinnest cloud agreed with ours. Whitehill and Hansen (1973, Icarus20, 146–152) have recently confirmed the work of Regas et al. (1973a, J. Quant. Spectry. Radiative Transfer13, 461–463) which showed that two cloud layers are not required to explain the CO2 phase variation of Venus. Prinn's recent photochemical study of sulfuric acid clouds further supports a single, continuous cloud layer in the line formation region instead of two cloud layers with an extensive clear region between. The single layer model appears more likely because the maximum particle density in Prinn's cloud occurs in the clear region between the two layers in the models of Hunt (1972, J. Quant. Spectry. Radiative Transfer12, 405–419) and Carleton and Traub (1972, Bull. Amer. Astron. Soc.4, 362.).  相似文献

The emission of O2 in the 1Δg band at 1.27 μm originating from the upper atmosphere of Venus is computed. Seven different production mechanisms are compared. The adopted value for the quenching rate coefficient is 3 × 10?20 cm3 sec?. The results are compared with the measurements by Connes and it is shown that the values of the ozone profile calculated by N. D. Sze and M. B. McElroy (1975, Planet. Space Sci.23, 763–786) are too low to explain the emission at 1.27 μm on the basis of the ozone photolysis. In this case, the ozone quantity would be underestimated by a factor of at least 10. The scarcity of kinetic data relative to the other processes, which involve ClO for example, does not allow a reliable identification of the main process responsible for the emission.  相似文献

A numerical model is used to simulate the buildup of an electric field from below the Venusian cloud layer to the surface. The steady-state profiles of the ion concentration, net space charge, diffusion and conduction current, and electric field are calculated. Two electric field sources are considered. The first is that produced by the higher diffusivity of positive ions relative to negative ions, which results in charging the surface with a net positive charge. The results show that the magnitude of the electric field and the net space charge developed near the surface are mainly dependent on the mixing conditions in the boundary layer. However, even in the case of relatively strong mixing, the maximum electric field is found to be 1.5 V m?1 and it decays rapidly above 100 m. The second source of an electric field is assumed to be charge separation inside Venusian clouds. A steady-state conduction current in the region below the layer of clouds which represents the intensity of charge separation inside the clouds is used as a parameter. When this parameter is assumed to be 10?12 A m?2, which is about the fair-weather conduction current in the atmosphere of Earth, an electric field of 5 kV m?1 is developed near the surface. This electric field exists up to a few kilometers, decreases by an order of magnitude at about 20 km, and then decays rapidly.  相似文献
