Summary The authors perform an exploratory analysis on the effect of the timing of the stratospheric vortex breakup in the occurrence of cut-off low systems (COLs) in the Northern Hemisphere. The first multidecadal Northern Hemisphere COLs database (Nieto et al, 2005) covering a 41 year-long period (1958–1998) was used in the analysis. The dates of stratospheric vortex breakup were obtained using two different approaches recently purposed in literature based in potential vorticity and zonal winds. An analysis of differences of COLs occurrences for the five earlier (later) breakup years showed that, at latitudes lower than 45° N, COLs are more frequent for earlier vortex years during the following spring and summer. The monthly analysis showed that, in general, the significant differences start in May lasting until September, being especially relevant for the European sector, the area with the highest rates of COLs occurrence in the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

Cut-off lows (COLs) are significantly associated with many convective events and anomalous regional climate in the Northeast China. By using 49-year NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, COL events are detected and tracked by an objective and automatic method based on synoptic concept model. Based on this dataset and daily rain-gauge records in Northeast China during 1979–2005, seasonal climatology of COLs and associated precipitation patterns over Northeast China are investigated. Most COLs have a short lifetime of less than a week and have a spatial size ranging from 500 to 1,000 km, with slight seasonal differences. Temporal variation of COL occurrence exhibits a seasonal cycle, with a peak in summer, and considerable interannual variability. The COLs tend to occur more frequently over the northern Northeast China Plain, and the center for maximum frequency shows a zonal oscillation, with an extension to continent in summer and a shift to western North Pacific coast in winter. Most COLs form to the east of Lake Baikal and decay over the western North Pacific coast. COLs are apt to move along east or southeast passages around the year, and tracks are relatively more complicated in warm seasons. About a quarter of annual mean precipitation over Northeast China is associated with COLs. Moreover, COL-associated precipitation contributes greatly to total precipitation in northern and northwestern parts of Northeast China, and the ratios of COL contribution are stronger during spring and autumn than in summer.  相似文献

Summary An earlier developed multidecadal database of Northern Hemisphere cut-off low systems (COLs), covering a 41 years period (from 1958 to 1998) is used to study COLs interannual variability in the European sector (25°–47.5° N, 50° W–40° E) and the major factors controlling it. The study focus on the influence on COLs interannual variability, of larger scale phenomena such as blocking events and other main circulation modes defined over the Euro-Atlantic region. It is shown that there is a very large interannual variability in the COLs occurrence at the annual and seasonal scales, although without significant trends. The influence of larger scale phenomena is seasonal dependent, with the positive phase of the NAO favoring autumn COL development, while winter COL occurrence is mostly related to blocking events. During summer, the season when more COLs occur, no significant influences were found.  相似文献

In situ measurements of the vertical structure of ozone were made in Changchun(43.53?N, 125.13?E), China, by the Institute of Atmosphere Physics, in the summers of 2010–13. Analysis of the 89 validated ozone profiles shows the variation of ozone concentration in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere(UTLS) caused by cut-off lows(COLs) over Changchun. During the COL events, an increase of the ozone concentration and a lower height of the tropopause are observed.Backward simulations with a trajectory model show that the ozone-rich airmass brought by the COL is from Siberia. A case study proves that stratosphere–troposphere exchange(STE) occurs in the COL. The ozone-rich air mass transported from the stratosphere to the troposphere first becomes unstable, then loses its high ozone concentration. This process usually happens during the decay stage of COLs. In order to understand the influence of COLs on the ozone in the UTLS, statistical analysis of the ozone profiles within COLs, and other profiles, are employed. The results indicate that the ozone concentrations of the in-COL profiles are significantly higher than those of the other profiles between ±4 km around the tropopause. The COLs induce an increase in UTLS column ozone by 32% on average. Meanwhile, the COLs depress the lapse-rate tropopause(LRT)/dynamical tropopause height by 1.4/1.7 km and cause the atmosphere above the tropopause to be less stable. The influence of COLs is durable because the increased ozone concentration lasts at least one day after the COL has passed over Changchun. Furthermore, the relative coefficient between LRT height and lower stratosphere(LS) column ozone is-0.62,which implies a positive correlation between COL strength and LS ozone concentration.  相似文献

Summary The Iberian Peninsula is one of the regions in the world with higher occurrence of cut-off low systems (COL). The aim of this paper is to analyse the weather events (rainfall and cloudiness layer) associated to COLs in the Iberian Peninsula with tools not previously used: (a) the use of the new multidecadal COLs database developed by Nieto et al (2005) that permit us to study a 41 years period (1958–1998), (b) the checking of the expected weather events (rainfall and cloudiness layer) associated with COLs in a conceptual model (Winkler et al, 2005) and (c) the extensive use of radiosoundings to analyse convective instability in areas inside and close to the COL. Two points of view are used to make the analysis: (1) a source oriented method, when a particular COL is followed and its associated precipitation and cloudiness is analysed over four quadrants in which Iberia was divided and (2) a receptor oriented method, when the precipitation associated to COLs is analysed in given areas, defined by patterns of precipitation. Results reveal that the precipitation and cloudiness patterns associated to COLs in the conceptual model reproduce quite well the main characteristics found over the Iberian Peninsula. The generalized idea that most of the COLs produce intense convective rainfall is show to be misleading. Convective phenomena are important usually when the centre of the COL is located on the Mediterranean region. Most of the rainfall associated with COLs comes from the baroclinic shield; specially in cases located over the west half of the Iberian Peninsula. It is shown that nearly 30% of COLs do not induce any rainfall; most of them located in the southern half of the Peninsula, and mainly during autumn. Only 30% of COLs produce generalized rainfall over the whole analysed territory, being most of them (about 90%) located over the western half of the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

Study on cut-off low-pressure systems with floods over Northeast Asia   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Summary The cut-off lows (COLs) during the period from June to August 1998 leading to the record flood in Northeast Asia, especially in Northeast China, has been investigated in this paper. The results are as follows: the blocking highs benefited significantly the formation and maintenance of COLs over Northeast China; an obvious frontogenesis zone existed in Northeast China and it implies that baroclinity played an important role in the initiation of COLs, especially in middle and upper troposphere; the maxima of the potential vorticity anomaly were located in the upper troposphere, then extended downwards to the middle and the lower troposphere. The pronounced interaction between systems in upper-middle and low troposphere can be revealed; the moisture supply was from South China, and even from East China Sea and South China Sea. The strong southerly current transported very rich moisture to Northeast China. The maximum of the convergence of moisture flux was below 850 hPa. Obvious interaction between the middle and lower latitude systems was found in the study. Also, the summer monsoon showed significant impacts on the sustained heavy rainfalls related with the COLs over Northeast China; the upward motion could be caused by the lifting of the large scale dynamic forcing and there was no obvious releasing of latent heating in the upper-middle troposphere. The cold dome in the COLs was quite different both from the warm core in tropical cyclone and from the weaker warm core in Meiyu (Baiu) front low. The calculation of vorticity budget shows that both the horizontal advection term and horizontal divergence term contributed importantly to the maintenance and the strengthening of positive relative vorticity. Finally, the complex dynamical characteristics regarding the COLs are discussed and further investigation is proposed.  相似文献

Cut-off low (COL) weather systems that are associated with rainfall over the Eastern Cape are considered in this study. COLs are objectively identified and tracked over a 31-year period. Daily rainfall data of 22 evenly distributed stations over the Eastern Cape are utilized. Only COLs with a minimum spatial distribution, defined as more than a third of the rainfall stations that need to report rainfall on at least 1 day of a COL event, are considered for analysis of rainfall attributes. These attributes include the occurrence of COL rain days of different magnitudes, the distribution of the depth and temperature of the COL centres for the rain days of different magnitudes, the associated spatial distribution of rainfall as well as the associated atmospheric circulation. The frequency of COLs over the Eastern Cape has a winter maximum and a summer minimum. COL rain days of small, medium and large magnitudes occur most frequently during the winter, while small- and medium-magnitude COL rain days experience peaks in autumn and spring, respectively. The low-level flow, and in particular the position of the low/trough, seems to be the determinant factor in the occurrence, magnitude and spatial extent of COL-induced rainfall.  相似文献

Summary Over the last 25 years the term “cold pool” has come to be used in many spheres as a synonym for floods. This has given rise to a major confusion that has even moved into international scientific and technical circles. In this paper we analyse how the concept of “cold air pool” has evolved from when it was defined at the beginning of the 20th century down to the present day, in which the Spanish term “DANA” (similar to a cut-off low) has been introduced in order to avoid existing confusions. In the course of the paper we take account of cold air pool genesis and their thermal and dynamic characteristics, and we discuss the factors that have led to them being identified (erroneously) with heavy rainfall events. The study takes as its basis a systematic analysis of all the cold air pools recorded in Europe, and particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, over the period 1974–1983, as well as in studies of the floods recorded in eastern Spain since 1950 until nowadays. The discussion done on the basis of this accurate analysis leads to the identification of a cold air pool as a type cut-off low (COL) and justifying the use of this more generic term when a structure like this is present in a heavy rainfall event. For a better illustration of the previous discussion and understanding of the role of COLs in intense rainfall events, we present the episode of September 1971 in Catalonia, in which over 400 mm were recorded. The analysis was carried out with the MM5 initialised with the ERA-40 re-analyses. The results show that the role of COLs in the heavy rainfall episodes recorded in Spain is mainly dynamic, both in terms of the circulation they create at low levels and the potential vorticity anomaly generated. This circulation draws in very warm, moist and potentially unstable air perpendicularly to the coast and the littoral mountain chains. The factor of thermal instability, owing to the presence of cold air at medium and higher levels, shows itself to be more important in zones where this warm moist advection at low levels is not as significant as in the Mediterranean zone.  相似文献

Summary This paper reports a cloud cover analysis of cut-off low pressure systems (COL) using a pattern recognition method applied to IR and VIS bispectral histograms. 35 COL occurrences were studied over five years (1994–1998). Five cloud types were identified in COLs, of which high clouds (HCC) and deep convective clouds (DCC) were found to be the most relevant to characterize COL systems, though not the most numerous. Cloud cover in a COL is highly dependent on its stage of development, but a higher percentage of cloud cover is always present in the frontal zone, attributable due to higher amounts of high and deep convective clouds. These general characteristics are most marked during the first stage (when the amplitude of the geopotencial wave increases) and second stage (characterized by the development of a cold upper level low), closed cyclonic circulation minimizing differences between rearward and frontal zones during the third stage. The probability of heavy rains during this stage decreases considerably. The centres of mass of high and deep convective clouds move towards the COL-axis centre during COL evolution.  相似文献

The features of the temperate jet stream including its location, intensity, structure, seasonal evolution and the relationship with the Asian monsoon are examined by using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. It is indicated that the temperate jet stream is prominent and active at 300 hPa in winter over the region from 45°-60°N and west of 120°E. The temperate jet stream is represented by a ridge area of high wind speed and dense stream lines in the monthly or seasonal mean wind field, but it .corresponds to an area frequented by a large number of jet cores in the daily wind field and exhibits a distinct boundary that separates itself with the subtropical jet. A comparison of the meridional wind component of the temperate jet stream with that of the subtropical jet shows that the northerly wind in the temperate jet stream is stronger than the southerly component of the subtropical jet, which plays an important role in the temperate jet stream formation and seasonal evolution, and thus the intensity change of the meridional wind component can be used to represent the temperate jet stream's seasonal variation. Analysis of the temperature gradient in the upper troposphere indicates that the temperate jet stream is accompanied by a maximum zonal temperature gradient and a large meridional temperature gradient, leading to a unique jet stream structure and particular seasonal evolution features, which are different from the subtropical jet. The zonal temperature gradient related to the land-sea thermal contrast along the East China coastal lines is responsible for the seasonal evolution of the temperate jet. In addition, there exists a coordinated synchronous change between the movement of the temperate jet and that of the subtropical jet. The seasonal evolution of the meridional wind intensity is closely related to the seasonal shift of the atmospheric circulation in East Asia, the onset of the Asian summer monsoon and the start of Meiyu in the Yangtze and Huaihe River Valleys, and it correlates well with summer and wint  相似文献

利用欧洲中期预报中心再分析数据和中国气象局提供的降水数据分析了2008年1月到2月初东亚急流对我国南方雨雪冰冻灾害的影响,并给出东亚急流变化可能的原因。东亚急流强度和位置的变化引起其入口区的垂直运动的变化,从而使得我国南方降雨的位置和强度发生改变。为了研究灾害发生期间东亚急流变化的原因,利用扰动动能方程分析了与东亚急流有关扰动动能以及方程各项的变化,结果表明:扰动动能的变化能够很好的表示东亚急流的变化;扰动位势平流对扰动动能的发展至关重要。东亚急流北部弱风区存在较小的扰动动能中心,位势通量矢量将这个中心的扰动动能输送到东亚急流的入口区并辐合,使得东亚急流增强。  相似文献

利用比较稠密的无线电探空和气球测风观测网,通过对华北夏季一次暴雨过程的三维流场和湿度场的分析,揭示了湿急流的结构和形成过程。湿急流是指低层空气在湿不稳定大气的上升过程中,不断加速形成一支斜穿整个对流层的自下而上的急流。在湿急流附近,凝结饱和区的分布和发展过程,似乎表明水汽在急流形成过程中起了一种主动作用。湿急流在对流层顶附近和副热带急流合併,并使副热带急流的动能增加。这似乎启示,湿斜压过程可能是大气环流中的基本过程之一。  相似文献

低空急流对强对流天气的预报有重要意义。针对目前低空急流主要由手工绘制,存在效率低、易受主观因素影响的问题,本文基于MICAPS高空全要素填图数据中的探空站风场信息,提出了一种低空急流自动识别及急流轴自动绘制算法。算法从急流轴定义出发,依次从风速、风向、探空站分布、中轴线位置等多个角度对低空急流轴进行检测。经过传递闭包聚类、急流轴关键点提取、不同风向急流轴关键点归并、急流轴平滑等步骤,实现了低空急流自动识别及急流轴的自动绘制。测试表明,在识别的基础上自动绘制的急流轴具有位置准确、形态自然、能完整反映急流水汽输送路径、适应复杂环境低空急流等特点。在291组测试数据中未发现空报,准确击中率达到94.96%。  相似文献

文中利用包括湍流摩擦耗散的原始方程模式研究了高空西风急流、低空南风急流和水汽凝结过程对锢囚锋环流时间演变和降水强度变化的影响 ,计算结果表明 ,水汽凝结过程与高空西风急流或低空南风急流的共同作用对锢囚锋环流的演变起非常重要的作用 ,能在锢囚锋区形成强中尺度深对流系统 ,与干大气中高空西风急流对锢囚锋环流的作用远大于低空南风急流的情况相反 ,在存在水汽凝结过程的湿大气中 ,低空南风急流对锢囚锋的影响远大于高空西风急流 ,它产生的降水过程时间更长 ,降水强度更大 ,降水范围更广 ,是锢囚锋区产生强中尺度降水的重要因子。  相似文献

利用NCEP/NCAR再分析数据和中国台站降水资料研究冬季东亚高空副热带急流和温带急流协同变化特征及其与中国南方地区降水的关系,发现冬季东亚高原急流与温带急流同期反向协同变化特征最为显著。即高原急流增强,同时温带急流减弱(SW型)和高原急流减弱,同时温带急流增强(WS型)。当高原急流增强(减弱)而温带急流减弱(增强)时,中国南方地区降水显著增加(减少)。合成分析表明,不同急流协同变化型态下冷暖空气活动特征存在较大差异,高原急流与温带急流的反向协同变化可以真实反映与冬季中国南方地区降水相关联的冷暖空气活动特征,进而导致不同降水形态的产生。  相似文献

In a two-and-a-half-layer quasi-geostrophic model, a process study is conducted on the interaction between a vortex and a zonal jet, both with constant potential vorticity. The vortex is a stable anticyclone, initially located north of the eastward jet. The potential vorticity of the jet is allowed to have various vertical structures, while the vortex is concentrated in only one layer. The flow parameters are set to values characteristic of the Azores region.First, the jet is stable. Weak vortices steadily drift north of the jet without crossing it while strong vortices can cross the jet and tear off a cyclone with which they pair as a heton (baroclinic dipole). This heton often breaks later in the shear exerted by the jet; the two vortices finally drift apart. When crossed by deep anticyclones, the jet develops meanders with 375 km wavelength. These results exhibit a noticeable similarity with the one-and-a-half-layer case studied in Part I.Secondly, the jet is allowed to be linearly unstable. In the absence of the vortex, it develops meanders with 175 km wavelength and 25-day e-folding time on the β-plane. For various vertical structures of the jet, baroclinic instability is shown to barely affect jet–vortex interaction if the linear growth rate of unstable waves is smaller than 1/(14 days). Further simulations with a linearly unstable, nonlinearly equilibrated jet evidence its strong temporal variability when crossed by a deep vortex on the β-plane. In particular, long waves can dominate the spectrum for a few months after jet crossing by the vortex. Again in this process, the deep vortex couples with a surface cyclone and both drift southwestward.  相似文献

2004年9月3日~5日川东出现了大范围的强暴雨过程,本文分析了这次暴雨过程的云图特征和环流形势,并利用MM5中尺度数值模式对本次暴雨进行了二重嵌套模拟,分析及模拟结果表明,本次降水过程与中尺度云团、高低空急流和对流层中低层涡旋活动密切相关,同时还与副热带高压活动和“桑达”台风活动相关。盆地涡出现在低空急流的左侧,而川东强降水发生在高空急流的南面、低涡东南侧与西南低空急流大风出口区之问。盆地正涡度维持有利于盆地上空垂直上升运动的发展和维持,对暴雨的发生提供了动力条件。垂直上升运动是高低空急流和盆地涡联系的纽带,也是盆地涡动力驱动的结果。分析结果还表明,西南低空急流在暴雨出现前建立,暴雨和盆地涡同时出现,而暴雨、低空急流和盆地涡几乎同时减弱。高空急流在过程前和过程中是逐步加大,当高空急流出现剧减时,预示暴雨即将结束。  相似文献

Abstract

Observations of the tidal jet issuing from Quatsino Narrows into Rupert‐Holberg Inlet, B.C. are discussed. Two types of flow are observed: a buoyant surface jet and a negatively buoyant jet. The buoyant flow is parameterized with an initial densimetric Froude number, and agreement is good between the observed vertical penetration of the jet and that predicted by several existing models. The negatively buoyant jet entrains several times its initial volume; entrainment constants for the flow are larger than those observed from the two‐dimensional plume on similar inclines, yet smaller than those for neutrally buoyant jets. A time‐scale of 2 to 3 weeks is calculated for the flushing of the Inlet during times of negatively buoyant inflow. The buoyant jet is observed to reduce the overall density of the water column, and estimated vertical eddy diffusivities are considerably larger than in most other fjords. Changes in the Froude number of the jet are controlled primarily by changes in the density and speed of the inflow. During the period of observations the density of the jet appears to be controlled by runoff.  相似文献

Many cut-off low (COL) climatologies have been done throughout the Southern Hemisphere. Few have focused on COL vertical depth and their link to surface cyclones that often accompany these systems. Here we extend these climatologies in order to gain an understanding of the spatial, mobility, temporal, and seasonal variability of COL extensions towards the surface. Deep COLs (dCOLs), with extension all the way to the surface, are most frequent in the autumn months, are longer lasting, are more mobile and found most frequently situated in the high latitudes. They are usually collocated with Rossby wave breaking (RWB) on multiple isentropic surfaces. These RWB events drive high potential vorticity air into the upper troposphere. The depths of these intrusions are also shown to be critical to the development of COL extensions with dCOLs associated with deeper intrusions into the mid-troposphere. Upper-level PV features are collocated with warm surface potential temperature anomalies which can play a critical role in surface cyclogenesis. The warm surface potential temperature features, when out of phase with coupled upper tropospheric processes (surface features lagging behind upper level processes), can inhibit surfaceward extension and result in shallow COL (sCOL) development. Composite analysis shows that dCOLs that drive their own surface low development result in the simultaneous amplification of troughs throughout the troposphere, with the surface cyclone developing within a day of the COL.
