The orbital period variations of the Algol-type semidetached binary UW Vir are analyzed. It is shown that in addition to a long-term rapid increase (dP/dt = + 1.37 × 10−6 day/year), its orbit period has a variation with the period of 62.3 years. Based on the basic physical parameters given by Brancewicz and Dworak in 1980, the physical mechanisms causing the orbital period variations are investigated. The analysis indicates that the periodical variation of orbital period can be interpreted by the light-travel time effect due to the presence of a third body with the mass of M3 ≥ 0.94 M. As no observational information has been reported for this tertiary component, it might be a compact object (e.g., a white dwarf). The long-term increase of orbital period can be explained in terms of the mass transfer from the secondary to the primary component (dM2/dt = 1.43 × 10−7 M/year). This is in agreement with the semidetached configuration of the system with a lobe-filling secondary component. But according to the evolution theory of binaries, the Algol-type semidetached binary UW Vir should be at the evolutionary stage of slow mass transfer on the nuclear-reaction timescale of the secondary component. However, the analysis shows that the timescale for the periodical variation of orbital period is much shorter than the nuclear-reaction timescale of the secondary component, but close to the thermodynamic timescale of the secondary. This reveals that: (1) This binary system is at the evolutionary stage of rapid mass transfer on the thermodynamic timescale of the secondary component; or (2) The circumstellar matter of the system makes a contribution to the rapid increase of orbital period via the angular momentum transfer.  相似文献

The results are given of polarimetric and photometric observations of BL Lacertae-type object OJ 287 for 1972–76. These, and all other data available from the literature, are used in a comparative analysis of polarimetric and photometric properties of the object. The variations of time-scales from several years to several hours are noted. The variability is caused by the flaring up and fading of separate sources (hot spots) of polarized (synchrotron) radiation. The existence of a preferable direction of polarization (0=80°) is an indication of a stable magnetic field. It may be used as an argument in favour of the single-body hypothesis of Lacertids. The behaviour of OJ 287 during a 6-day interval may be explained by intensity changes of a single source with constant parameters of polarization. It is found that, for this source,p=42.8%, 0=101°. The night variations of brightnes and parameters of polarization limit the dimensions of the source responsible for this variability (R<-5×1014 cm) and enable us to estimate its degree of polarization (p50%).  相似文献

Five color UBVRI photometric and polarimetric measurements of the eclipsing binary VW Cyg are reported. It is shown that in the primary minimum the luminosity is attenuated (at short wavelengths) even after passage of the second contact. This fact is interpreted as evidence of gaseous structures in the system. The exchange of matter among the system components is also confirmed by the O-C curve constructed from data covering nearly a hundred years. Polarimetric analysis makes it possible to isolate the intrinsic (P=0.030±0.02) and interstellar components of the polarization. The UBVRI light curves of VW Cyg have been resolved. This was done using an algorithm for synthesizing theoretical light curves in the Roche model. Good agreement was obtained between the theoretical curves and observations in the V, R, and I bands, but the observed minimum depths in the U and B bands exceed the theoretical values. This appears to be caused by gas flows in the system.  相似文献

Two sets of observations of the WR-eclipsing binary CV Ser were carried out in 1982 and 1983 in the standard photometric systemUBV. Since 1982, the depth of the atmospheric eclipse has changed and does not show in theV data obtained in 1983. There is significant intrinsic variability (0 . m 05) in the light curves of CV Ser over both sets of observations and it is suggested that this is due to the changing mass-loss rate from the envelope of the WC8 star on time-scales from days to months. The observed mass-loss rate can change the mass by some 10–5 M y–1. An orbital inclinationi=72±2° is obtained.  相似文献

The present paper is devoted to the interpretation of linear polarization data obtained in 14 quiescent prominences with the Pic-du-Midi coronagraph-polarimeter by J. L. Leroy, in the two lines Hei D3 andH quasi-simultaneously. The linear polarization of the lines is due to scattering of the anisotropic photospheric radiation, modified by the Hanle effect due to the local magnetic field. The interpretation of the polarization data in the two lines is able to provide the 3 components of the magnetic field vector, and one extra parameter, namely the electron density, because the linear polarization of H is also sensitive to the depolarizing effect of collisions with the electrons and protons of the medium. Moreover, by using two lines with different optical thicknesses, namely Hei D3, which is optically thin, and H, which is optically thick ( = 1), it is possible to solve the fundamental ambiguity, each line providing two field vector solutions that are symmetrical in direction with respect to the line of sight in the case of the optically thin line, and which have a different symmetry in the case of the optically thick line.It is then possible to determine without ambiguity the polarity of the prominence magnetic field with respect to that of the photospheric field: 12 prominences are found to be Inverse polarity prominences, whereas 2 prominences are found to be Normal polarity prominences. It must be noticed that in 12 of the 14 cases, the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field vector has a Normal polarity (to the extent that the notion of polarity of a vector component is meaningful; no polarity can be derived in the 2 remaining cases); this may explain the controversy between the results obtained with methods based on the Hanle effect with results obtained through the Zeeman effect. A dip of the magnetic field lines across the prominence has been assumed, to which the optically thick H line is sensitive, and the optically thin Hei D3 line is insensitive.For the Inverse prominences, the average field strength is 7.5±1.2 G, the average angle,, between the field vector and the prominence long axis is 36° ± 15°, the average angle, , between the outgoing field lines and the solar surface at the prominence boundary is 29° ± 20°, and the average electron density is 2.1 × 1010 ± 0.7 × 1010 cm–3. For the Normal prominences, the average field strength is 13.2±2.0 G, the average angle,, between the field vector and the prominence long axis is 53° ± 15°, the average angle, , between the outgoing field lines and the solar surface at the prominence boundary is 0° ± 20° (horizontal field), and the average electron density is 8.7 × 109 ± 3.0 × 109 cm–3.  相似文献

Linear polarization of radiation emitted by tidally distorted stars as a function of the binary system phase is computed, taking into account true absorption and the scattering of light on free and bound electrons within hot stellar atmospheres. Computations are made both for the linear distribution of true sources across the atmospheres and for radiative-stable model atmospheres presented by Kurcuzet al. (1974) and Kurucz (1979). Polarization variability was investigated as a function of wavelength . In a number of cases, polarization variability was found to be at an observable level. The most marked variability was expected in the ultraviolet range adjacent to the boundaries of the spectral series for H and He. Near the Lyman limit of approximately =912 Å for stars with an effective temperatureT eff35 000 K and near the ionization boundary for HeII 226 Å for stars withT eff>35 000 K, the amplitude of polarization variability is greater than in the case of pure electron atmospheres, sometimes reaching the level of 0.5–1%. For fairly long waves where the limb-darkening coefficient falls below a certain critical valueu cr0.5, the plane of polarization is found to be turned by 90° as compared to the case of a pure electron atmosphere. For limb-darkening coefficients far from the value ofu cr; the form of the polarization phase curves, as well as dependence on the parameters of a binary system, remain approximately the same as those in the case of pure electron scattering.  相似文献

Observations of V4334 Sgr have been made with the JCMT, MERLIN, ATCAand the VLA. Searches with JCMT for CO in and around the PNassociated with V4334 Sgr has provided upper limits for the peakemission of 20 mK and the line-flux of 0.17 K-km s-1. Thisgives an upper limit on the CO mass of 3 × 10-7D2 M at D kpc. VLA observations havedetected 2.7 ± 0.1 mJy of emission from the PN, which appears to beclumpy and extends to a radius of 17 arcsec. This indicates anoptically thick nebula, and suggests a range of distances of 1.83 to4.96 kpc for a reasonable range of masses for optically thick PN.Comparison with estimated total H emission gives E(B-V) =0.8 ±0.1. MERLIN observations do not detect the wind indicated tobe present in IR observations prior to dust obscuration. TheAustralia Telescope Compact Array did not detect OH maser emissionfrom either the main- or satellite-lines. Future VLA observationswill increase integration times and uv-coverage to significantlyimprove the radio imaging. MERLIN target-of-opportunity time isretained in order to attempt to image any fast wind as it develops.An independent estimate of the PN mass would allow the use of theradio observations to determine the distance; conversely anindependent distance measurement would lead to a PN mass estimate.The author urges the acquisition of an accurate measurement of thetotal H emission from the PN.  相似文献

I review various phenomena associated with mass‐accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in the view of supersoft X‐ray sources. When the mass‐accretion rate is low (acc < a few × 10–7 M⊙yr–1), hydrogen nuclear burning is unstable and nova outbursts occur. A nova is a transient supersoft X‐ray source (SSS) in its later phase which timescale depends strongly on the WD mass. The X‐ray turn on/off time is a good indicator of the WD mass. At an intermediate mass‐accretion rate an accreting WD becomes a persistent SSS with steady hydrogen burning. For a higher mass‐accretion rate, the WD undergoes “accretion wind evolution” in which the WD accretes matter from the equatorial plane and loses mass by optically thick winds from the other directions. Two SSS, namely RX J0513‐6951 and V Sge, are corresponding objects to this accretion wind evolution. We can specify mass increasing WDs from light‐curve analysis based on the optically thick wind theory using multiwavelength observational data including optical, IR, and supersoft X‐rays. The radial velocities of the star BM Ori are determined from spectra obtained by the HST and IUE satellites, as well as from spectra obtained with the BTA telescope. An analysis of this data shows that the radial velocities of the main star and its satellite experience an irregular positive shift by 20-30 km/s. This fact can only be interpreted in terms of the presence of yet another star in the binary system. The new observations have made it possible to significantly improve the accuracy of the spectroscopic elements of the orbit of the close binary system and to estimate the orbital characteristics of the third body. The preliminary values of the elements are: Ep=JD2444744, P=1302d, =11km/s, e=0.92, K=20km/s, and =1.6rad.  相似文献

The degree of polarization of light from stars in 44 O B associations as a function of interstellar absorption is investigated. It is shown that the character of the dependence of P on A V for stars in associations and stars not in associations depends on the value of A V: for A V 2 m .5 it has a linear character and is the same for both groups of stars. For A V > 2 m .5 the dependence of P on A V for stars in and not in associations departs from linearity and for A V = 4 m .5 it reaches P ass = 1.8% and P nonass = 1%, respectively. Such a difference is explained by the additional depolarization in stellar associations. Such strong depolarization in associations may be due to the overall magnetic field of the Galaxy and to physical peculiarities in the association itself.  相似文献

The contact binary system CC Com (=12h09m33s.8, =+22°4339, (1950);V max=11.31, (B-V)max=1.24) is a W UMa-type system with the shortest known period. The photometric solution of CC Com is presented using the Wilson and Devinney method. The results show that the CC Com belongs to the late-type eclipsing binary with the spectral type K5V and K6V, low temperatureT 1=4300 K,T 2=4265 K, the mass ratioq=0.5873±0.0021, and the inclinationi=87°.719±1°.44. The best regions of the gravity darkening exponents , the bolomotric albedov, and the limb-darkening coefficients are tested. It is found that 0.1250.065, 0.1v0.5, =0.5 are better regions for CC Com. The third body ofl 3 is not found to be significant. The results are combined with the spectroscopic results of Rucinski to provide an estimate of the absolute parameters.  相似文献

Axisymmetrical models for protoplanetary nebulae are produced. We discuss the mechanism for mass loss from evolved cool stars and the characteristics of the gas outflow. By using two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics, we find that the gas is preferentially ejected in a so-called equatorial plane. For a grid of models, the expansion velocities are found to be of the order ofv escape/2 and the mass loss rates tilde 10–5-10–4 M /year which appear consistent with the available observational data. Magnetic fields intensities in the 10–4 to 10–3 gauss range are obtained in circumstellar envelopes, in good agreement with observations (Nedoluha and Bowers, 1992).  相似文献

A strong S-component of solar radiation was identified during the total solar eclipse of November 12, 1966. Its characteristics, as measured at 4.28 cm, were studied in terms of flux and polarization, and its spectral features were derived by the use of data from other observatories. The whole source presented approximately the typical characteristics suggested by some authors in the last few years, and further it has been shown that it could be resolved into at least two enhanced regions, one showing unpolarized radiation with a brightness temperature T b 1.2 × 106 °K, and the other showing 50% of left-handed circularly polarized radiation, with T b 0.7 × 106 °K. The source's overall characteristics favour the presence of non-thermal absorption at the emitting regions.  相似文献

A brief history of investigations of Lyr, an emission‐line binary and one of the first ever discovered Be stars is presented. A rather fast progress in the understanding of this enigmatic object during the past fifteen years is then discussed in some detail. The current picture of β Lyr is that it is an eclipsing binary in a stage of mass transfer between the components. The mass‐losing star is a B6‐8II object, with a mass of about 3 M, which is filling the Roche lobe and sending material towards its more massive companion at a rate of about 2 × 10—5 M yr—1. This leads to the observed rapid increase of the orbital period at a rate of 19 s per year. The mass‐gaining star is as early B star with a mass of about 13 M. It is completely hidden inside an opaque accretion disk, jet‐like structures, perpendicular to the orbital plane and a light‐scattering halo above the poles of the star. The observed radiation of the disk corresponds to an effective temperature which is much lower than what would correspond to an early B star. The disk shields the radiation of the central star in the directions along the orbital plane and redistributes it in the directions perpendicular to it. That is why the mass‐losing star appears brighter of the two in the optical region of the spectrum. At present, rather reliable estimates of all basic properties of the binary and its components are available. However, in spite of great progress in understanding the system in recent years, some disagreement between the existing models and observed phase variations still remains, both for continuum and line spectrum, which deserves further effort.  相似文献

Multi-colourWBVR photoelectric observations of the eclipsing binary OX Cas were carried out. The photometric elements, absolute parameters and the angular rate of the apsidal motion ( = 9.1 deg yr–1 were obtained. The Two Micron Galactic Survey (TMGS) is the most sensitive large scale point source near infrared survey of the Galactic Plane yet attempted. The Galactic plane has been drift-scanned in several regions over the areas -5° <l < 30°, |b | 15° and 30° <l < 180°, |b | 5°. The survey is complete in the areas covered to magnitudem k = +9.8. So far, a total area of 255 square degrees has been mapped and 500000 objects have been detected, the majority of these in the Galactic plane and with no visible counterparts. In this contribution we use data from the TMGS to probe the star distribution within the Galactic disk.  相似文献

Using the archival ROSAT PSPC observations, AB Dor is found to be variable in X-rays. The periodic variations are consistent with previously reported rotational period of 0 d .514. The average spectrum of AB Dor is best represented with two-temperature Raymond-Smith model with kT values of 0.19±0.07 and 1.17±0.02 keV. The quiescent luminosity of the system is found to be 4.36±0.6×1030 ergs s–1. A flare with a rise time of 350 seconds is detected during which X-ray luminosity rises from 5.8±1.6×1030 to 15.8±4.9×1030 ergs s–1. We conclude that AB Dor is very similar to the active components of RS CVn binaries and other active classes. In view of the wide separation from the binary companion Rst 137B, this activity must be intrinsic to the active star.  相似文献

Infrared observations of the unique symbiotic system CH Cyg in 2003–2006 are presented. Analysis of the observations has shown that a fairly dense dust structure (a cloud or a shell) appeared on the line of sight in August–November 2006. The dust grains in the new shell are similar in optical properties to graphite ones and their sizes are mostly within the range 0.14–0.16 μm. The dust shell is optically thick and its optical depth at 2.2 μm is τ(2.2) ≈ 0.97. The dust shell mass is M d(06) ≈ 8 × 10−6 M and the rate of matter flow into the shell has reached ∼2 × 10−5 M yr−1. Original Russian Text ? O.G. Taranova, V.I. We present a detailed, quantitative study of the standard [WC10] Wolf-Rayet central star CPD-56o 8032 based on new high resolution AAT UCLES observations and the Hillier (1990) WR standard model. Our analysis of CPD-56o 8032 gives the wind properties (T *=34500K, lg (L/L )=3.8, lg (M/M a–1)=–5.4,v =225 km s–1) and chemistry (C/He=0.5, O/He=0.1, by number), the latter suggesting an intimate relationship with the Ovi PN central stars and the PG 1159-035 objects. A comparison between the wind properties of CPD-56o 8032 and Sk-66o 40 (WN 10) indicates that low excitation, low wind velocity WR winds are common to both low mass PN central stars (WC sequence) and high mass post-LBV's (WN sequence).  相似文献
