Planetary magnetic fields could impact the evolution of planetary atmospheres and have a role in the determination of the required conditions for the emergence and evolution of life (planetary habitability). We study here the role of rotation in the evolution of dynamo-generated magnetic fields in massive Earth-like planets, Super Earths (1–10 M). Using the most recent thermal evolution models of Super Earths (Gaidos, E., Conrad, C.P., Manga, M., Hernlund, J. [2010]. Astrophys. J. 718, 596–609; Tachinami, C., Senshu, H., Ida, S. [2011]. Astrophys. J. 726, 70) and updated scaling laws for convection-driven dynamos, we predict the evolution of the local Rossby number. This quantity is one of the proxies for core magnetic field regime, i.e. non-reversing dipolar, reversing dipolar and multipolar. We study the dependence of the local Rossby number and hence the core magnetic field regime on planetary mass and rotation rate. Previous works have focused only on the evolution of core magnetic fields assuming rapidly rotating planets, i.e. planets in the dipolar regime. In this work we go further, including the effects of rotation in the evolution of planetary magnetic field regime and obtaining global constraints to the existence of intense protective magnetic fields in rapidly and slowly rotating Super Earths. We find that the emergence and continued existence of a protective planetary magnetic field is not only a function of planetary mass but also depend on rotation rate. Low-mass Super Earths (M ? 2 M) develop intense surface magnetic fields but their lifetimes will be limited to 2–4 Gyrs for rotational periods larger than 1–4 days. On the other hand and also in the case of slowly rotating planets, more massive Super Earths (M ? 2 M) have weak magnetic fields but their dipoles will last longer. Finally we analyze tidally locked Super Earths inside and outside the habitable zone of GKM stars. Using the results obtained here we develop a classification of Super Earths based on the rotation rate and according to the evolving properties of dynamo-generated planetary magnetic fields.  相似文献

We perform numerical simulations to investigate potential Earth-like planets in the GJ 876 planetary system. We show that the secular resonances ν1 and ν2 (resulting respectively from the inner and outer giant planets) can excite the eccentricities of Earth-like planets with orbits 0.21 AU  a < 0.50 AU and cause them to be ejected out of the system in a short time. However, in the dynamical sense, Earth-like planets potentially exist in the region 0.50 AU  a  1.00 AU, in stable low-eccentricity orbits which may last up to 105 yr.  相似文献

We present new B- and V-band photometry of the W UMa-type binary system QX And, which is a member of the open cluster NGC 752. Revised orbital period and new ephemerides were given for the binary system based on the data of times of light minima. The result of a period analysis reveals that the system is undergoing a continuous orbital period increase during the past decades. The rate of period increasing turns out to be about 2.7 × 10?7 d yr?1. With the Wilson–Devinney code, a photometric solution is computed. It yields a contact configuration for the system with a filling factor of 0.361. Combining the results from the photometric solution along with that from the radial-velocity observations, we have determined the absolute parameters for the two components of the system. The masses, radii and luminosity of the primary and secondary stars are calculated as 1.43 ± 0.04 M, 1.45 ± 0.09 R, 2.87 ± 0.40 L and 0.44 ± 0.02 M, 0.87 ± 0.05 R, 0.99 ± 0.13 L, respectively. The evolutionary status and physical nature of the contact binary system were discussed compared with the theoretical models.  相似文献

The reflex motion of a star induced by a planetary companion is too small to detect by photographic astrometry. The apparent discovery in the 1960s of planetary systems around certain nearby stars, in particular Barnard’s star, turned out to be spurious. Conventional stellar radial velocities determined from photographic spectra at that time were also too inaccurate to detect the expected reflex velocity changes. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the introduction of solid-state, signal-generating detectors and absorption cells to impose wavelength fiducials directly on the starlight, reduced radial velocity errors to the point where such a search became feasible. Beginning in 1980, our team from UBC introduced an absorption cell of hydrogen fluoride gas in front of the CFHT coudé spectrograph and, for 12 years, monitored the radial velocities of some 29 solar-type stars. Since it was assumed that extra-solar planets would most likely resemble Jupiter in mass and orbit, we were awarded only three or four two-night observing runs each year. Our survey highlighted three potential planet hosting stars, γ Cep (K1 IV), β Gem (K0 III), and ? Eri (K2 V). The putative planets all resembled Jovian systems with periods and masses of: 2.5 years and 1.4 MJ, 1.6 years and 2.6 MJ, and 6.9 years and 0.9 MJ, respectively. All three were subsequently confirmed from more extensive data by the Texas group led by Cochran and Hatzes who also derived the currently accepted orbital elements.None of these three systems is simple. All five giant stars and the supergiant in our survey proved to be intrinsic velocity variables. When we first drew attention to a possible planetary companion to γ Cep in 1988 it was classified as a giant, and there was the possibility that its radial velocity variations and those of β Gem (K0 III) were intrinsic to the stars. A further complication for γ Cep was the presence of an unseen secondary star in an orbit with a period initially estimated at some 30 years. The implication was that the planetary orbit might not be stable, and a Jovian planet surviving so close to a giant then seemed improbable. Later observations by others showed the stellar binary period was closer to 67 years, the primary was only a sub-giant and a weak, apparently synchronous chromospheric variation disappeared. Chromospheric activity was considered important because κ1 Cet, one of our program stars, showed a significant correlation of its radial velocity curve with chromospheric activity.? Eri is a young, magnetically active star with spots making it a noisy target for radial velocities. While the signature of a highly elliptical orbit (e = 0.6) has persisted for more than three planetary orbits, some feel that even more extensive coverage is needed to confirm the identification despite an apparent complementary astrometric acceleration detected with the Hubble Space Telescope. We confined our initial analyses of the program stars to looking for circular orbits. In retrospect, it appears that some 10% of our sample did in fact have Jovian planetary companions in orbits with periods of years.  相似文献

Assuming that soft X-ray sources in symbiotic stars result from strong thermonuclear runaways, and supersoft X-ray sources from weak thermonuclear runaways or steady hydrogen burning symbiotic stars, we investigate the Galactic soft and supersoft X-ray sources in symbiotic stars by means of population synthesis. The Galactic occurrence rates of soft X-ray sources and supersoft X-ray sources are from ~2 to 20 yr?1, and ~2 to 17 yr?1, respectively. The numbers of X-ray sources in symbiotic stars range from 2390 to 6120. We simulate the distribution of X-ray sources over orbital periods, masses and mass accretion rates of white dwarfs. The agreement with observations is reasonable.  相似文献

This paper presents new CCD Bessell BVRI light curves and photometric analysis of the Algol-type binary star TX Her. The CCD observations were carried out at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Observatory in 2010. New BVRI light curves from this study and radial velocity curves from Popper (1970) were solved simultaneously using modern light and radial velocity curves synthesis methods. The general results show that TX Her is a well-detached eclipsing binary, however, both component stars fill at least half of their Roche lobes. A significant third light contribution to the total light of the system could not be determined. Using OC residuals formed by the updated minima times, an orbital period study of the system was performed. It was confirmed that the tilted sinusoidal OC variation corresponds to an apparent period variation caused by the light travel time effect due to an unseen third body. The following absolute parameters of the components were derived: M1 = 1.62 ± 0.04 M, M2 = 1.45 ± 0.03 M, R1 = 1.69 ± 0.03 R, R2 = 1.43 ± 0.03 R, L1 = 8.21 ± 0.90 L and L2 = 3.64 ± 0.60 L. The distance to TX Her was calculated as 155 ± 10 pc, taking into account interstellar extinction. The position of the components of TX Her in the HR diagram are also discussed. The components are young stars with an age of ~500 Myr.  相似文献

In this article, a period analysis of the late-type eclipsing binary VV UMa is presented. This work is based on the periodic variation of eclipse timings of the VV UMa binary. We determined the orbital properties and mass of a third orbiting body in the system by analyzing the light-travel time effect. The O−C diagram constructed for all available minima times of VV UMa exhibits a cyclic character superimposed on a linear variation. This variation includes three maxima and two minima within approximately 28,240 orbital periods of the system, which can be explained as the light-travel time effect (LITE) because of an unseen third body in a triple system that causes variations of the eclipse arrival times. New parameter values of the light-time travel effect because of the third body were computed with a period of 23.22 ± 0.17 years in the system. The cyclic-variation analysis produces a value of 0.0139 day as the semi-amplitude of the light-travel time effect and 0.35 as the orbital eccentricity of the third body. The mass of the third body that orbits the eclipsing binary stars is 0.787 ± 0.02 M, and the semi-major axis of its orbit is 10.75 AU.  相似文献

We obtained multi-colour light curves of the overcontact binary system HH Boo and analysed the orbital period variation of the system. Our analysis tentatively indicates either mass transfer from the secondary to the primary or mass loss from the system at a rate of -5.04 × 10−7 M per year. Through a combined analysis of the published radial velocity curve and light curves, we determined an inclination (i) of 69°.71 ± 0°.16 and a semi-major axis (a) of 2.246 ± 0.064 R for HH Boo. The masses of the primary and secondary components were found to be 0.92 ± 0.08 M and 0.58 ± 0.06 M, respectively. The radius determined for the primary was 0.98 ± 0.03 R, while that determined for the secondary was 0.80 ± 0.02 R. We demonstrated that HH Boo is most likely a member of the A-type subclass of W UMa binaries.  相似文献

We present a sample of 20 massive galaxy clusters with total virial masses in the range of 6 × 1014 M ? Mvir ? 2 × 1015 M, re-simulated with a customized version of the 1.5. ENZO code employing adaptive mesh refinement. This technique allowed us to obtain unprecedented high spatial resolution (≈25 kpc/h) up to the distance of ~3 virial radii from the clusters center, and makes it possible to focus with the same level of detail on the physical properties of the innermost and of the outermost cluster regions, providing new clues on the role of shock waves and turbulent motions in the ICM, across a wide range of scales. In this paper, a first exploratory study of this data set is presented. We report on the thermal properties of galaxy clusters at z = 0. Integrated and morphological properties of gas density, gas temperature, gas entropy and baryon fraction distributions are discussed, and compared with existing outcomes both from the observational and from the numerical literature. Our cluster sample shows an overall good consistency with the results obtained adopting other numerical techniques (e.g. Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics), yet it provides a more accurate representation of the accretion patterns far outside the cluster cores. We also reconstruct the properties of shock waves within the sample by means of a velocity-based approach, and we study Mach numbers and energy distributions for the various dynamical states in clusters, giving estimates for the injection of Cosmic Rays particles at shocks. The present sample is rather unique in the panorama of cosmological simulations of massive galaxy clusters, due to its dynamical range, statistics of objects and number of time outputs. For this reason, we deploy a public repository of the available data, accessible via web portal at http://data.cineca.it.  相似文献

We present deep high dynamic range infrared images of young nearby stars in the Tucana/Horologium and β Pic associations, all ∼10 to 35 Myrs young and at ∼10 to 60 pc distance. Such young nearby stars are well‐suited for direct imaging searches for brown dwarf and even planetary companions, because young sub‐stellar objects are still self‐luminous due to contraction and accretion. We performed our observations at the ESO 3.5m NTT with the normal infrared imaging detector SofI and the MPE speckle camera Sharp‐I. Three arc sec north of GSC 8047‐0232 in Horologium a promising brown dwarf companion candidate is detected, which needs to be confirmed by proper motion and/or spectroscopy. Several other faint companion candidates are already rejected by second epoch imaging. Among 21 stars observed in Tucana/Horologium, there are not more than one to five brown dwarf companions outside of 75 AU (1.5″ at 50 pc); most certainly only ≤5% of the Tuc/HorA stars have brown dwarf companions (13 to 78 Jupiter masses) outside of 75 AU. For the first time, we can report an upper limit for the frequency of massive planets (∼10 Mjup) at wide separations (∼100 AU) using a meaningfull and homogeneous sample: Of 11 stars observed sufficiently deep in β Pic (12 Myrs), not more than one has a massive planet outside of ∼100 AU, i.e. massive planets at large separations are rare (≤9%). Early type massive stars drive thin, dense shells whose edges often show evidence of star-formation. The possibility of fragmentation of these shells, leading to the formation of putative star-forming clumps is examined with the aid of semi-analytic arguments. We also derive a mass-spectrum for clumps condensing out of these shells by performing Monte–Carlo simulations of the problem. By extending on results from our previous work on the stability of thin, dense shells, we argue that clump-mass estimated by other authors in the past, under a set of simplifying assumptions, are several orders of magnitude smaller than those calculated here. Using the expression for the fastest growing unstable mode in a shock-confined shell, we show that fragmentation of a typical shell can produce clumps with a typical mass ?103  M. It is likely that such clumps could spawn a second generation of massive and/or intermediate-mass stars which could in turn, trigger the next cycle of star-formation. We suggest that the ratio of shell thickness-to-radius evolves only weakly with time. Calculations have been performed for stars of seven spectral types, ranging from B1 to O5. We separately consider the stability of supernova remnants.  相似文献

We present the results of the study of the contact binary system BO CVn. We have obtained physical parameters of the components based on combined analysis of new, multi-color light curves and spectroscopic mass ratio. This is the first time the latter has been determined for this object. We derived the contact configuration for the system with a very high filling factor of about 88%. We were able to reproduce the observed light curve, namely the flat bottom of the secondary minimum, only if a third light has been added into the list of free parameters. The resulting third light contribution is significant, about 20–24%, while the absolute parameters of components are: M1 = 1.16, M2 = 0.39, R1 = 1.62 and R2 = 1.00 (in solar units). The O-C diagram shows an upward parabola which, under the conservative mass transfer assumption, would correspond to a mass transfer rate of dM/dt = 6.3 × 10?8M/yr, matter being transferred from the less massive component to the more massive one. No cyclic, short-period variations have been found in the O-C diagram (but longer-term variations remain a possibility).  相似文献

Both V701 Sco and BH Cen are two early-type short-period overcontact systems (P = 0.d762 and P = 0.d792, respectively). V701 Sco is a member of the young galactic cluster NGC 6383, while BH Cen is a component of a younger galactic cluster IC 2944 where star formation is in process. They provide good opportunity to understand the formation and evolution of binary stars. In the present paper, orbital period changes of the two binaries are investigated. It is discovered that the orbital period of BH Cen shows a long-term increase with a rate of dP/dt = +1.70(±0.39) × 10−7 days/year while it undergoes a cyclic oscillation with a period of 44.6 years and an amplitude of A3 = 0.d0216. For V701 Sco, its O-C curve reveals a periodic change with a period of 41.2 years and amplitude of A3 = 0.d0158. The mass ratio of BH Cen is 0.84, but V701 Sco contains twin B1-1.5V type stars with a mass ratio of unit. The continuous period increase of BH Cen is caused by the mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one at a rate of dM2/dt = 3.5 × 10−6 days/year.The cyclic period changes of both systems can be plausibly explained as the results of light-travel time effects suggesting that they are triple systems. The astrophysical parameters of the unseen tertiary components in the two systems have been determined. We think that the invisible tertiary components in both binaries played an important role in the formations and evolutions of the overcontact configurations by bringing angular momentum out from the central systems. For BH Cen, this process created the initial short period and will support its evolution into an overcontact configuration via a Case A mass transfer within the life time of the extremely young cluster IC 2944. For V701 Sco, two identical zero-age main-sequence components in an overcontact configuration suggest that it may have been formed by fission, possibly by the fission of the third body. The fact that no long-term continuous period variations were found for V701 Sco may suggest that an overcontact binary with the mass ratio of unity can be in an equilibrium revealing that the original configuration of the binary was overcontact as is its present state. It has been reported that faint stars in the two extremely young clusters are relatively scare. From the present study, it is shown that faint stars in young clusters are usually formed as companions of OB stars (including binaries). It is very difficult to detect them because of their low luminosity when compared with the more luminous OB stars.  相似文献

This study presents the absolute parameters of the contact binary system V376 And. CCD photometric observations were made at the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Observatory in 2004. The instrumental magnitudes of all observed stars were converted into standard magnitudes. New BV light curves of the system were analysed using the Wilson–Devinney method supplemented with a Monte Carlo type algorithm. Since there are large asymmetries between maxima (i.e., O’Connell effect) in these light curves, two different models (one with a cool spot and one with a hot spot) were applied to the photometric data. The best fit, which was obtained with a large hot spot on the secondary component, gives V376 And as an A sub-type contact binary in poor thermal contact and a small value of the filling factor (f  0.07). Combining the solutions of our light curves and Rucinski et al. (2001)’s radial velocity curves, the following absolute parameters of the components were determined: M1 = 2.44 ± 0.04 M, M2 = 0.74 ± 0.03 M, R1 = 2.60 ± 0.03 R, R2 = 1.51 ± 0.02 R, L1 = 40 ± 4 L and L2 = 5 ± 1 L. We also discuss the evolution of the system, which appears to have an age of 1.6 Gyr. The distance to V376 And was calculated as 230 ± 20 pc from this analysis, taking into account interstellar extinction.  相似文献

In this paper I recount the events which have led to the discovery of the first planets beyond the Solar System. The two planets circling an old neutron star, the 6.2 ms pulsar PSR B1257+12, were discovered in 1991 with the 1000 ft Arecibo radio telescope. The pulsar itself was detected by a large, all-sky survey conducted during the telescope maintenance period in early 1990. The subsequent timing observations have shown that the only plausible explanation of the variability of pulse arrival times of PSR B1257+12 was the existence of at least two terrestrial-mass planets around it. The third, Moon-mass planet in the system was detected in 1994, along with the measurement of perturbations resulting from a near 3:2 mean motion resonance between the two more massive bodies, which has provided the confirmation of a planetary origin of the observed variations of pulse arrival times. Further observations and analyses have resulted in an unambiguous measurement of orbital inclinations and masses of the planets in 2003. The measured approximate coplanarity of the orbits along with the inner solar system – like dynamical properties of the pulsar planets strongly suggest their origin in a protoplanetary disk, just like in the case of planets around normal stars. The existence of such a system predicts that rocky, Earth-mass planets should be common around various kinds of stars.  相似文献

The discovery of 51 Pegasi is the result of a continuous improvement of cross-correlation spectrographs to obtain more precise radial velocities. Three generations of instruments developed over 30 years have allowed us to increase the radial-velocity precision by a factor 1000, from 250 m s?1 in the 70s to a value close to 0.25 m s?1 today. The statistical results gathered on exoplanet properties over the last 14 years have revealed the amazing diversity of extrasolar planetary systems. Our solar system does not appear to be a typical example of planetary systems. These discoveries have provided strong constraints for planet-formation models. At the beginning the detections were mostly focused on gaseous giant planets. Today, the best precision is achieved by the HARPS spectrograph. This makes possible the discovery of planets with masses comparable to the mass of the Earth. A new category of very low mass with minimum masses below 10 Earth masses, which may well be solid objects, has recently been revealed. This newly discovered population (apparently quite numerous) reveals specific statistical properties offering useful constraints for planet-formation models. The continuously improving precision of the radial velocity technique strengthens our hope that real Earth-type planets could be identified in the very few coming years.  相似文献

We present the results of our investigation on the geometrical and physical parameters of W UMa-type binary TYC1174-344-1 from analyzed CCD (BVRI) light curves and radial velocity data. The photometric data were obtained in 2009 at Ankara University Observatory (AUO) and the spectroscopic observations were made in 2008 at Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago (Italy). Light and radial velocity observations were analyzed simultaneously by using the well-known Wilson–Devinney (2007 revision) code to obtain absolute and geometrical parameters. According to our solutions, the system is found to be a low mass-ratio A-type W UMa system. Combining our photometric solution with the spectroscopic data, we derived mass and radii of the eclipsing system as M1 = 1.381 M, M2 = 0.258 M, R1 = 1.449 R and R2 = 0.714 R. We finally discussed the evolutionary condition of the system.  相似文献

This paper presents the absolute parameters of RZ Dra. New CCD observations were made at the Mt. Suhora Observatory in 2007. Two photometric data sets (1990 BV and 2007 BVRI) were analysed using modern light-curve synthesis methods. Large asymmetries in the light curves may be explained in terms of a dark starspot on the primary component, an A6 type star. Due to this magnetic activity, the primary component would appear to belong to the class of Ap-stars and would show small amplitude with δ Scuti-type pulsations. With this in mind, a time-series analysis of the residual light curves was made. However, we found no evidence of pulsation behaviour in RZ Dra. Combining the solutions of our light curves and Rucinski et al. (2000)’s radial velocity curves, the following absolute parameters of the components were determined: M1 = 1.63 ± 0.03 M, M2 = 0.70 ± 0.02 M, R1 = 1.65 ± 0.02R, R2 = 1.15 ± 0.02 R, L1 = 9.72 ± 0.30 L and L2 = 0.74 ± 0.10 L. The distance to RZ Dra was calculated as 400 ± 25 pc, taking into account interstellar extinction. The orbital period of the system was studied using updated OC information. It was found that the orbital period varied in its long-period sinusoidal form, superimposed on a downward parabola. The parabolic term shows a secular period decrease at a slow rate of 0.06 ± 0.02 s per century and is explained by the mass loss via magnetized wind of the Ap-star primary. The tilted sinusoidal form of the period variation may be considered as an apparent change and may be interpreted in terms of the light-time effect due to the presence of a third body.  相似文献
