The stability of strange quark matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field is investigated using a dynamical, density dependent, quark mass approach to confinement. Changes in both the single particle and bulk energies of a system which are due to the strong magnetic field are also calculated. It is shown that the presence of a magnetic field makes strange quark matter energetically more stable.  相似文献

MHD simulation study is performed to investigate magnetic reconnection induced by the Kelvin Helmholtz instability in the parallel configuration of the uniform magnetic field geometry as well as the sheared field geometry. Highly distorted magnetic field lines due to Kelvin Helmholtz instability become reconnected and flattened so that they resume the straight field line structure in the final stage. When the initial magnetic field is sheared, magnetic islands formed as a result of magnetic reconnection are transported toward the weak field region but they soon disappear since these islands are of small scales and suffer strong diffusions. Morphological change in the long term evolution is most dramatic in the small range of magnetic field intensity in both the uniform field case and the sheared field case, which is not too strong to stabilize vortex growing early on or too weak to have negligible effect on the instability. Energy conversion and the momentum transport are also most effective in this small range.  相似文献

Magnetars are the neutron stars with the highest magnetic fields up to 1015–1016 G. It has been proposed that they are also responsible for a variety of extra-galactic phenomena, ranging from giant flares in nearby galaxies to fast radio bursts. Utilizing a relativistic mean field model and a variable magnetic field configuration, we investigate the effects of strong magnetic fields on the equation of state and anisotropy of pressure of magnetars. It is found that the mass and radius of low-mass magnetars are weakly enhanced under the action of the strong magnetic field, and the anisotropy of pressure can be ignored. Unlike other previous investigations, the magnetic field is unable to violate the mass limit of the neutron stars.  相似文献

We consider non-linear transport and drift processes caused by an inhomogeneous magnetic field in a turbulent fluid. The coefficients of magnetic diffusivity and drift velocity are calculated by making use of the second-order correlation approximation. Transport processes in the presence of a sufficiently strong magnetic field become anisotropic with larger diffusion rate and turbulent electrical resistivity across the field than along the field. Non-linear effects also lead to a drift of the magnetic field away from the regions with a higher magnetic energy.  相似文献

The properties of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence under the influence of a strong mean magnetic field are investigated from the Lagrangian viewpoint by tracking fluid particles in direct numerical simulations. The particle trajectories show characteristic bends near vortex sheets. A strong mean magnetic field leads to preferential diffusion parallel to the mean magnetic field. The two‐particle relative dispersion process shows a dependence on the orientation of the initial separation vector. The relative dispersion is slowed down for initial separation vectors aligned with the mean magnetic field. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Seismology of the solar atmosphere   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe a new instrument for seismically probing the properties of the Sun's lower atmosphere, and present some first results from an observational campaign carried out at the geographic South Pole during the austral summer of 2002/2003. A preliminary analysis of the data (simultaneous, high-cadence observations of the velocity signals from the photosphere and low chromosphere) shows that the well-known suppression of acoustic power in regions of strong magnetic field, and enhancement of high-frequency power around active regions (acoustic halos), are both consistent with a spreading out of the magnetic field lines with increasing height in the atmosphere. The data have also revealed some unexpected wave behavior. First, evanescent-like waves are found at frequencies substantially above the acoustic cut-off frequency in regions of intermediate magnetic field. Second, upward- and downward-propagating waves are detected in areas of strong magnetic field such as sunspots and plage: even at frequencies below the acoustic cut-off frequency. Third, the wave behavior in regions of strong magnetic field can change over periods of a few hours from propagating to evanescent. While we have no concrete explanation for the first two results, the latter result opens up the question of whether sound waves are involved in short-term events such as flares or CME's.  相似文献

We present the calculation of the probability production of an electron–positron pair in the presence of a strong magnetic field with time-varying strength. The calculation takes into account the presence of a strong, constant and uniform gravitational field in the same direction of the magnetic field. The results show that the presence of the gravitational field in general enhances very much the production of pairs. In particular, high-energy pairs are more likely produced in the presence of the gravitational field than in Minkowski spacetime.  相似文献

Microwave emission from solar active regions at frequencies above 4 GHz is dominated by gyroresonance opacity in strong coronal magnetic fields, which allows us to use radio observations to measure coronal magnetic field strengths. In this paper we demonstrate one powerful consequence of this fact: the ability to identify coronal currents from their signatures in microwave images. Specifically, we compare potential-field (i.e., current-free) extrapolations of photospheric magnetic fields with microwave images and are able to identify regions where the potential extrapolation fails to predict the magnetic field strength required to explain the microwave images. Comparison with photospheric vector magnetic field observations indicates that the location inferred for coronal currents agrees with that implied by the presence of vertical currents in the photosphere. The location, over a neutral line exhibiting strong shear, is also apparently associated with strong heating.  相似文献

The presence of an imposed vertical magnetic field may drastically influence the structure of thin accretion discs. If the field is sufficiently strong, the rotation law can depart from the Keplerian one. We consider the structure of a disc for a given eddy magnetic diffusivity but neglect details of the energy transport. The magnetic field is assumed to be in balance with the internal energy of the accretion flow. The thickness of the disc as well as the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number and the viscosity, α , are the key parameters of our model. The calculations show that the radial velocity can reach the sound speed for a magnetic disc if the thickness is comparable to that of a non-magnetic one. This leads to a strong amplification of the accretion rate for a given surface density. The inclination angle of the magnetic field lines can exceed the critical value 30° (required to launch cold jets) even for a relatively small magnetic Prandtl number of order unity. The toroidal magnetic fields induced at the disc surface are smaller than predicted in previous studies.  相似文献

Equations governing the coupling of the scalar and vector potentials for a resistive electron-positron plasma in a strong magnetic field are derived. It is shown that in the presence of magnetic shear, a tearing instability may occur. The latter can lead to magnetic field line reconnection and the formation of magnetic islands which could affect the dynamics of the pulsar magnetosphere.  相似文献

The effect of a strong magnetic field on neutron stars or white dwarfs is calculated for Thomson scattering in a strong magnetic field with radiation damping. The Stokes's parameters for the scattered radiation are computed explicitly in terms of the state of polarization of the incident wave, the electrocyclotron frequency, the angle of incidence, and the angle of scattering. The criterion for the magnetic field to substantially affect the Stokes's parameters is that the photon frequency be less than the electrocyclotron frequency. The effects of classical radiation damping are explicitly taken into account by using the Abraham-Lorentz equation. The corresponding quantum mechanical treatment for Compton scattering in a relativistic electron gas is now under investigation.  相似文献

Using the magnetic dipole method, magnetic field models of eight stars were built in order to obtain additional information about the features of the magnetic field structures in CP stars. These data are necessary to clarify the conditions of star formation in the early stages of stellar evolution. We noticed a large variety of initial conditions that lead to a strong scatter of parameters of magnetic stars and magnetic structures.  相似文献

We investigate the stability of the Hall‐MHD system and determine its importance for neutron stars at their birth, when they still consist of differentially rotating plasma permeated by extremely strong magnetic fields. We solve the linearised HallMHD equations in a spherical shell threaded by a homogeneous magnetic field. With the fluid/flow coupling and the Hall effect included, the magnetorotational instability and the Hall effect are both acting together. Results differ for magnetic fields aligned with the rotation axis and anti‐parallel magnetic fields. For a positive alignment of the magnetic field the instability grows on a rotational time‐scale for any sufficiently large magnetic Reynolds number. Even the magnetic fields which are stable against the MRI due to the magnetic diffusion are now susceptible to the shear‐Hall instability. In contrast, the negative alignment places strong restrictions on the growth and the magnitude of the fields, hindering the effectiveness of the Hall‐MRI. While non‐axisymmetric modes of the MRI can be suppressed by strong enough rotation, there is no such restriction when the Hall effect is present. The implications for the magnitude and the topology of the magnetic field of a young neutron star may be significant (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We study the effects of two-dimensional turbulence generated in sunspot umbra due to strong magnetic fields and Alfven oscillations excited in sunspots due to relatively weak magnetic fields on the evolution of sunspots. Two phases of sunspot magnetic field decaying are shown to exist. The initial rapid phase of magnetic field dissipation is due to two-dimensional turbulence. The subsequent slow phase of magnetic field decaying is associated with Alfven oscillations. Our results correspond to observed data that provide evidence for two types of sunspot evolution. The effect of macroscopic diamagnetic expulsion of magnetic field from the convective zone or photosphere toward sunspots is essential in supporting the long-term stability and equilibrium of vertical magnetic flux tubes in sunspots.  相似文献

The sterile neutrino mechanisms for pulsar natal kicks are reanalyzed. The necessary strength of the magnetic field generated in a supernova explosion is shown to have been underestimated significantly in previous works. An alternative mechanism for pulsar natal kicks involving only standard neutrinos in which the outgoing neutrino flux in a supernova explosionwith the generation of a strong toroidal magnetic field leads to a magnetic field redistribution in the ??upper?? and ??lower?? hemispheres of the supernova envelope is discussed. The emerging magnetic field pressure asymmetry can produce a pulsar natal kick.  相似文献

The dependence of the position of the solar wind sonic point on the magnetic field in the solar corona during cycle 23 is studied. This dependence is shown to be rather strong in the rising phase and at the cycle maximum. As the coronal magnetic field grows, the distance to the sonic point decreases. Since the distance to the sonic point has been shown previously to anticorrelate with the solar wind speed, the result obtained suggests a strong positive correlation between the later and the coronal magnetic field. The situation changed dramatically two years after the calendar date of the cycle maximum. Beginning in 2004 the solar wind speed ceased to depend on the magnetic field up until the cycle minimum in December 2008. In 2009 a strong dependence of the wind speed on the coronal magnetic field was restored. It is hypothesized that this effect is associated with two different coronal heating mechanisms whose relative efficiency, in turn, depends on the contribution from magnetic fields of different scales.  相似文献
