Volcanic ash fallout represents a serious threat to people living near active volcanoes because it can produce several undesirable effects such as collapse of roofs by ash loading, respiratory sickness, air traffic disruption, or damage to agriculture. The assessment of such volcanic risk is therefore an issue of vital importance for public safety and its mitigation often requires to evaluate the temporal evolution of the phenomenon through reliable computational models.We develop an Eulerian model, named FALL3D, for the transport and deposition of volcanic ashes. The model is based on the advection–diffusion–sedimentation equation with a turbulent diffusion given by the gradient transport theory, a wind field obtained from a meteorological limited area model (LAM) and the source term derived from by buoyant plume theory. It can be used to forecast either ash concentration in the atmosphere or ash loading on the ground. Model inputs are topography, meteorological data given by a LAM, mass eruption rate, and a particle settling velocity distribution. A test application to the July 2001 Etna eruption is presented.  相似文献

为能得到用尽可能少的调谐质量阻尼器(TMD)组成有效性和鲁棒性高的多重调谐质量阻尼器控制系统,本文提出了一种适用于土木工程结构的新控制策略——双层多重调谐质量阻尼器(DMT—MD)。使用定义的优化目标函数,评价了双层多重调谐质量阻尼器(DMTMD)的控制性能。数值结果表明,双层多重调谐质量阻尼器(DMTMD)比多重凋谐质量阻尼器(MTMD)具有更好的有效性和对频率调谐的鲁棒性。DMTMD比双重调谐质量阻尼器(DTMD)具有更好的有效性,而DMTMD和DT—MD对频率调谐的鲁棒性近似相同。因此,双层多重调谐质量阻尼器是一种先进的结构控制策略。  相似文献

It has been frequently observed that the ferromagnetic minerals in volcanic rocks may undergo some physical/chemical changes when they are heated in a laboratory. For paleointensity determinations, it is therefore desirable to use the Thellier method, in which internal consistency of the data assures that such undesirable changes did not take place in a particular sample. The most serious drawback of this method is that it requires a considerable number of heatings and coolings and measurements of the remanent magnetization. Following a suggestion of Kono, a modified version of Thellier's technique was developed and applied to a historical lava flow of Hawaii and Oligocene rhyolites and welded tuffs of San Juan volcanic field, Colorado, U.S.A. Samples were heated only once to each temperature and cooled under a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the NRM directions. Results were compared to those obtained by the conventional Thelliers' technique. It was found that the modified method gives results as satisfactory as the original method. With the selection of appropriate samples, the modified method will cut down the time required for the experiment to almost half of what is required in the original method, without losing the merits of Thelliers' technique.  相似文献

Cyclic tests on two large‐scale models of existing bridge piers with rectangular hollow cross‐section were performed in the ELSA laboratory. The prototype structure is an existing reinforced concrete highway bridge constructed in Austria in 1975. The piers presented several seismic deficiencies and consequently they showed poor hysteretic behaviour and limited deformation capacity as well as undesirable failure modes that do not comply with the requirements of modern codes for seismic‐resistant structures. The different characteristics of polarization of body and Rayleigh waves make it possible to separate these two types of waves by their characteristics and suppress the latter. The moving time-window analysis often is used in polarization filtering but it is difficult to determine a suitable time-window length, resulting in some problems, such as complex eigenvalues and non-convergence. For overcoming these disadvantages, in this paper, we introduce the concept of complex-trace analysis and conduct de-noise processing to suppress undesirable surface waves by instantaneous polarization analysis in the case of horizontal and vertical component seismic recordings from the Hauinan coal mine. The performance of the method is illustrated by examples with synthetic and field data and its effectiveness to remove surface waves from multi-component seismic data is demonstrated.  相似文献

瑞雷面波与体波在偏振上的差异使得利用偏振特征分离这两种波场成为可能。为克服滑动时窗法在应用中存在的一些问题,本文将工程地震和天然地震信号分析中的复数道技术与瞬时偏振分析技术引进到能源领域多分量地震勘探转换波记录中的面波压制处理。理论模拟与野外实测数据的处理试验显示了较好的压制面波、保留有效信号的去噪效果,证明了该技术值得在多分量数据处理中推广应用。  相似文献

Some 130 years ago, a small estuary to the north of Dublin was partly cut off from the sea by a railway causeway. The mudflats that formed became an important feeding ground for wildfowl. In recent years the estuary has become subject to increasing organic pollution. Algal growth has increased and while the situation is not yet damaging to wildfowl, there is evidence that further increase in nutrients would cause undesirable extension of algal mats in the estuary.  相似文献

An understanding of undesirable disturbance to the balance of organisms is needed to diagnose marine eutrophication as defined by EU Directives and OSPAR. This review summarizes the findings of the UK Defra-funded Undesirable Disturbance Study Team, which concluded that 'an undesirable disturbance is a perturbation of a marine ecosystem that appreciably degrades the health or threatens the sustainable human use of that ecosystem'. A methodology is proposed for detecting disturbance of temperate salt-water communities dominated by phytoplanktonic or phytobenthic primary producers. It relies on monitoring indicators of ecosystem structure and vigour, which are components of health. Undesirable disturbance can be diagnosed by accumulating evidence of ecohydrodynamic type-specific changes in: (i) bulk indicators; (ii) frequency statistics; (iii) flux measurements; (iv) structural indicators; and (v) indicator species. These are exemplified by (i) chlorophyll, transparency, dissolved oxygen, and opportunistic seaweed cover; (ii) HABs frequency; (iii) primary production; (iv) benthic and planktonic 'trophic indices'; (v) seagrasses and Nephrops norvegicus. Ecological Quality Objectives are proposed for some of these. Linking the diagnosis to eutrophication requires correlation of changes with nutrient enrichment. The methodology, which requires the development of a plankton community index and emphasizes the importance of primary production as an indicator of vigour, can be harmonized with the EU Water Framework Directive and OSPAR's Strategy to Combat Eutrophication.  相似文献

动校正是地震资料处理的关键内容之一,直接关系到地震资料处理结果的精度.在浅层和大偏移距情况下,常规动校正使波形发生拉伸畸变,波形拉长、频带向低频方向移动,进而影响叠加效果.通常地震资料处理中大都采用切除的方法克服动校正拉伸畸变的影响,这对目的层较深时是可取的.以工程地质调查为目的的海洋地震勘探旨在了解海底之下较浅地层深度范围内的地质信息,一般勘探区水深较浅,数据叠加道数较少,如果仍然采取切除处理,势必严重影响资料的分辨率和准确度.本文阐述了一种无拉伸动校正方法,能较好地解决动校正后的波形畸变问题,理论模型和实际资料的处理结果表明该方法在近海浅层工程地震勘探中是行之有效的,有助于提高速度分析的精度和地震资料的分辨率.  相似文献

The physico‐chemical characteristics and microbial composition of the final effluents of two municipal wastewater treatment plants in South Africa were assessed between July and September 2009. The impact of the treated final effluents on the receiving water bodies was also evaluated. The temperature across all sampling points ranged between 14 and 22°C, while pH varied from 6.9 to 7.6. High levels of turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and orthophosphate (PO4) were observed in many cases. Turbidity of the samples was in the range of 2.2–288.6 NTU. The concentrations (mg/L) of other physico‐chemical parameters are as follows: COD (9.33–289); ammonia (0.000340–45.4); nitrate (0.062–539); nitrite (0.021–22.6); PO4 (5.3–33.2). The microbial quality of the effluents discharged from the plants did not comply with the limits set by the South African guidelines with respect to pathogens such as Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli, total coliform, faecal coliform, enterococci, faecal streptococci, and viral particles for effluents intended for discharge into receiving watersheds. This study revealed an undesirable impact on the physico‐chemical and microbial qualities of the receiving water bodies as a result of the discharge of inadequately treated effluents from the wastewater treatment facilities. This poses a health risk to several rural communities which rely on the receiving water bodies primarily as their sources of domestic water and recreational purposes. There is therefore a need for the intervention of appropriate regulatory agencies in South Africa to ensure compliance of treatment facilities with wastewater effluent quality standards.  相似文献

The concept of partial probability weighted moments (PPWM), which can be used to estimate a distribution from censored samples, is introduced. Unbiased estimators of PPWM are derived. An application is made to estimating parameters and quantiles of the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution from censored samples. Censored samples yield high quantile estimates which are almost as efficient as those obtained from uncensored samples. This could be a very useful technique for dealing with the undesirable effects of low outliers which occur in semiarid and arid zones.  相似文献

Application of the artificial neural network (ANN) to predict pseudospectral acceleration or peak ground acceleration is explored in the study. The training of ANN model is carried out using feed-forward backpropagation method and about 600 records from 39 California earthquakes. The statistics of the residuals or modeling error for the trained ANN-based models are almost the same as those for the parametric ground motion prediction equations, derived through regression analysis; the residual or modeling error can be modeled as a normal variate. The similarity and differences between the predictions by these two approaches are shown. The trained ANN-based models, however, are not robust because the models with almost identical mean square errors do not always lead to the same predictions. This undesirable behaviour for predicting the ground motion measures has not been shown or discussed in the literature; the presented results, at least, serve to raise questions and caution on this problem. A practical approach to ameliorate this problem, perhaps, is to consider several trained ANN models, and to take the average of the predicted values from the trained ANN models as the predicted ground motion measure.  相似文献

Unreinforced masonry infill walls are widely used as non-structural partitions in RC frames. The effects of infills on the structural responses are often ignored in the design process since they are generally considered as expendable elements. However, recent studies have shown that not only shear damage can be inflicted to the columns braced by the infill walls, but also that the structural stability can be jeopardised by the fall-off of the infills. This paper presents the development of new detailing methods for the infill walls, which features slit panels, isolation gaps between the infills and columns, and anchorage of the infills. The proposed detailing methods were tested and verified experimentally using shake-table tests on five 1/3-scale infilled RC frame specimens with different combinations of the features stated above. The design and construction of the shake-table test specimens have taken into account the similitude requirements. The test results indicate that the proposed detailing method effectively reduced the undesirable interaction between column and infill walls. And the use of proper anchorage could prevent the fall off of infills from the bounding frame. Furthermore, the specimens with slit infill walls displayed better seismic performances, which could be attributed to the rocking behaviour of the sub-panels with increased aspect ratios.  相似文献

In the United States fish wastes can be ocean dumped without an Ocean Dumping Permit if the wastes contain no additives (flocculating or preserving agents, etc.). Fish wastes are currently ocean dumped off American Samoa, Louisiana and Puerto Rico. Fish wastes are characteristically high in proteins, fats, dissolved and suspended organic materials. Water quality parameters affected by these wastes are biochemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, oil and grease, pH, and turbidity. Other key factors include organic and nutrient enrichment, the attractant of undesirable predator species (i.e. sharks) and the natural oxygen regeneration processes.  相似文献

This study assesses analytically the effectiveness, feasibility and limitations of elastic and hysteretic damping augmentation devices, such as elastomeric and lead–rubber bearings, with respect to the dynamic and seismic performance of cable-stayed bridges. This type of bridge, which has relatively greater flexibility, is more susceptible to undesirable vibrations due to service and environmental loadings than are conventional bridges. Therefore, damping is a very important property. Supplementary damping devices based on the plastic deformation of lead and steel are proposed at critical zones, such as the deck–abutment and deck–tower connections, to concentrate hysteretic behaviour in these specially designed energy absorbers. Inelastic behaviour in primary structural elements of the bridge can therefore be avoided, assuring the serviceability of these cable-supported bridges. Analytically, three-dimensional modelling is developed for the bridge and the damping devices, including the bridge geometrical large-displacement non-linearity and the local material and geometric non-linearities of the energy dissipation devices. The effects of various modelling and design parameters of the bridge response are also studied, including the properties, modelling accuracy and location of the devices along the bridge superstructure. It is shown that an optimum model of the seismic performance of the bridges with these passive control devices can be obtained by balancing the reduction in forces along the bridge against tolerable displacements. Appropriate locations and hysteretic energy dissipation properties of the devices can achieve a significant reduction in seismic-induced forces, as compared to the case with no dampers added, and relatively better control of displacements. In addition, proper selection of the location of the passive control systems can help redistribute forces along the structure which may provide solutions for retrofitting some existing bridges. However, caution should be exercised in simulating the device response for a reliable bridge structural performance. Moreover, while seismic response of the bridge can be significantly improved with added dampers, their degree of effectiveness also depends on the energy absorption characteristics of the dampers.  相似文献

Land subsidence basically is the deprivation of water and earth resources, further inducing social and economical undesirable impact. The principal direction of land subsidence prevention is properly management of groundwater. However groundwater management should be developed on the basis of combined technical, economical, social and institutional approaches to management that reflect local conditions and can be adapted and evolved. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make land subsidence prevention strategies for government to refer. Before year 1969, agriculture was the main land utilization business in Pingtung Plain. Due to intensive development of fish breeding after 1970’s, the aquaculture area along the estuary region of Pingtung Plain have been dramatically increased. Groundwater thus became the main fresh water resource for aquacultural water diluting and flushing because of the insufficiency in surface water supply. The uncontrolled development of groundwater resources has led to undesirable effects, especially in the south where aquaculture is concentrated. These effects are land subsidence, saline water intrusion, lowering of water tables and reductions in well yields. Government stressed on the improvement of breeding technology in the past, which mainly focused on the water quality control in order to raise the culture density, however, it neglected the impact to the environment and quantity control. This paper promotes a reasonable aquacultural water consumption policy aims at finding out the most suitable breeding species considering water consumption and its reasonable breeding area under the premise that it will not depress the original profit of aquatic products trading. The EU Water Framework Directive recognises that ecological status is supported by the prevailing physico-chemical conditions in each water body. This paper describes an approach to providing guidance on setting thresholds for nutrients taking account of the biological response to nutrient enrichment evident in different types of water. Indices of pressure, state and impact are used to achieve a robust nutrient (nitrogen) threshold by considering each individual index relative to a defined standard, scale or threshold. These indices include winter nitrogen concentrations relative to a predetermined reference value; the potential of the waterbody to support phytoplankton growth (estimated as primary production); and detection of an undesirable disturbance (measured as dissolved oxygen). Proposed reference values are based on a combination of historical records, offshore (limited human influence) nutrient concentrations, literature values and modelled data. Statistical confidence is based on a number of attributes, including distance of confidence limits away from a reference threshold and how well the model is populated with real data. This evidence based approach ensures that nutrient thresholds are based on knowledge of real and measurable biological responses in transitional and coastal waters.  相似文献

The objective of performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) is the analysis of performance objectives with a specified annual probability of exceedance. Increasingly undesirable performance is caused by increasing levels of strong ground motion having decreasing annual probabilities of exceedance. Accordingly, the evaluation of ground motion intensity measures is a vital component of PBEE. This paper provides a brief synthesis of ground motion analysis procedures within a performance-based design framework, and is a summary of a recent report to which the reader is referred for details. The principal topics addressed are probabilistic characterizations of source, path, and site effects, with the discussion of these effects focusing principally on applications in active regions such as California.  相似文献
