We find that the profile changes observed for the UV emission lines L,Civ 1549, and MgIII 2798, in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Fairall 9 occur mainly near the line centre for L andCiv and in the wings for MgIII. A new model for the source distribution of galactic soft X-ray (B and C band) emission is presented. From the mean dependence of count rates on galactic latitudeb (i.e., the brightness distribution), we derive the soft X-ray source functionQ as function of the optical depth by solving the equation of radiative transfer with the aid of a Laplace transform. Contrary to older Heaviside step models,Q is found to increase strongly, but not abruptly, in the range 1.5<<2.5, indicating a noticeable emission of X-rays from beyond theHi scale height. Using standard X-ray absorption cross-sections for the interstellar medium, we find that the B band X-ray emission coefficient is non-zero within theHi disk and has a maximum at az-value slightly above the Hi scale height. In the C band, the emission coefficient slightly decreases with increasingz, at least up to theHi scale height. A non-zero source function near the galactic plane implies that the interstellar medium (ISM) within theHi scale height is not only an absorbing layer but is mixed with X-ray emitting regions. The so-called local hot bubble is adopted as one of these regions. The maximum of the B band emission coefficient, together with the sharp increase ofQ, is strong evidence for the existence of a galactic soft X-ray halo, and, moreover, give rise to the assumption of a general intergalactic X-ray background. The effective absorption cross-sections given in the literature, based on an (pure) exponential dependence in the negative correlation between count rates andHi column densities, were biased to be too small, in particular in the B band. In replacing the Heaviside step (in the ISM) by a smoothed transition region, these inconsistencies become spurious.  相似文献

Sudden brightening of FeII and Balmer (H and H) lines of X Oph was observed on 28–29 May, 1986. Equivalent width of FeII and H lines increased by a factor of two and that for H line by a factor of four, during the brigtening phase of the star. This brightening phenomena has been explained in the framework of Coronal Radiative Instability.  相似文献

Small angular scale twists in Hi filaments identified at high galactic latitudes are associated with the location of enhanced emission features (EEFs), structures that have traditionally been referred to as clouds. It is shown that in these directions the column density of gas is enhanced through geometrical effects because the line-of-sight intersects a greater pathlength when viewing along a segment of filament axis (flux tube) than when the tline-of-sight is more normal to the filament axis. By interpreting the EEFs as isolated entities (clouds) we derive an incorrect impression as regards the properties of interstellar Hi. For example, EEFs are typically a factor of five to ten times deeper than they are wide and, hence, the derived properties of Hi structures that have traditionally been taken to be as deep as they are wide are incorrect. This study leads to questions about the way observations of 21 cm, molecular, and 100 emission are currently being interpreted. It is concluded that much of what is observed to be cloud structure in the interstellar medium (except in regions directly associated with star formation) is telling us about geometry of filaments and not about the physics of clouds, The very notion of an interstellar cloud may have outlived its usefulness and previous work that has attempted to account for these structures in terms of gravitational stability or pressure equilibrium has to be reconsidered in the light of the existence of complex patterns of filamentary structure, not only in the Hi distribution but also of interstellar cirrus defined by 100 emission.  相似文献

An exceptionally highly resolved spectrogram (obtained by W. Livingston at Kitt Peak) has been used to derive rms values for both the intensity fluctuations in the continuum and the granular velocities in the Baii line 5853.69 by means of the power spectrum analysis. The main results are: (1) a corrected rms value for the intensity fluctuations of 3.8%; (2) a nearly constant power level in the one-dimensional power spectrum per unit wave number within the range 0.00018–0.01 km-1 (34000 km-600km); (3) a corrected rms value for the granular velocities of 1 km/s.The behaviour of the asymmetry of the Ban line in individual bright and dark continuous streaks can be explained by a superposition of two shifted symmetric line profiles originating from pure granular and intergranular regions, respectively. The impurity of dark and bright streaks amounts to be less than 10%, the mean relative velocity of granular and intergranular regions being again 1 km/s. We find indications the microturbulence in the intergranular regions to be larger than in the granular ones.  相似文献

Nine low and one high resolution IUE (LWR) spectrograms for the short period subgroup RS CVn-like stars have been studied, particularly in connection with the MgII 2800 Å feature. Clear emission contributions can be easily seen for some of these stars, while all nine of them appear to have the feature filled by emission to some extent.If surface flux in emission is considered as a measure of activity (and not just equivalent width) the short period subgroup is as active as the main group. The activity is not as obvious because of the generally higher photospheric temperatures.Correlations of such activity with angular velocity and the scale of irregular photometric distortions (starspots) are present, though the sample size is low.  相似文献

Spectroheliograms have been obtained in the line cores of two infrared multiplets of neutral oxygen. Those made in the lines of the 7770 Å multiplet show a very smooth intensity distribution, with faculae and sunspot penumbrae at a very low contrast with respect to the undisturbed photosphere. Spectroheliograms made in the core of 8446.37 Å show evidence of coupling with chromospheric features and of blending with a line of neutral iron.An analysis of a 7772 Å spectroheliogram indicates that a magnetic field of approximately 1500 G is required to produce the disappearing penumbra phenomenon. This value is consistent with the recent observations of Beckers and Schröter (1969).  相似文献

A new type of galactic outflow phenomenon has been discovered and published under the name of thermal spur by Mülleret al. (1987). It is argued that this outflow consists of relativistic pair plasma with an admixture of partially ionized hydrogen and cosmic rays, escaping from a large Hii region. This chimney serves as a substantial leak for the cosmic rays, i.e., may be an essential part of the galactic foundtain.  相似文献

Available information about the relative areas on the quiet and active parts of the sun covered with magnetic elements, together with theoretical results on the relation between the photospheric mechanical flux and the consequent coronal electron density, allows one to conclude that the mechanical flux generated in the photospheric magnetic elements is about seven times as large as the flux generated in non-magnetic regions.  相似文献

We show that the requirement of alocal conformal symmetry of the Abelian Higgs sunspot leads, at least formally, to a complex-valued electromagnetic potential, whose imaginary part is a conformal compensating potential. It is shown that there exists a fundamental difference between conformal and ordinary electromagnetic fields; whereas the ordinary total magnetic flux of a spot is quantized its conformal analogue has to vanish if the Higgs field is to be single-valued. We further stress that such a complex-valued Abelian Higgs field configuration mimics quite well, under certain conditions (all the salient features of) the classical Abelian Higgs sunspot.  相似文献

A search for linear polarization due to the transverse Zeeman effect in quiet regions near the heliographic north pole has been carried out. The aim is to determine new constraints on the properties of the hidden or turbulent magnetic flux of the Sun. As more than 90% of the total flux seen in magnetograms has its source in kG fluxtubes with an average filling factor of less than 1%, the term hidden magnetic flux refers to the field in the remaining 99% of the photospheric volume, which remains undetected in ordinary magnetograms (at available levels of spatial resolution and sensitivity).Simultaneous recordings of the Stokes I, Q, and V profiles of the Fei 5250.22 and 5247.06 Å lines with 5 × 5 sec of arc spatial resolution have been made with the NSO McMath solar telescope. The analysis shows how the observed Stokes Q amplitudes, as well as the Q/V ratio in combination with the 5250/5247 Stokes V line ratio, provide constraints on the field strength and the angular distribution of the field vectors of the hidden magnetic flux. The field has to be tangled with opposite polarities mixed on a subarcsec scale, and the field vectors have to have large inclinations with respect to the vertical direction, with an angular distribution not far from being isotropic in the photosphere. Constraints on the strength of this tangled or turbulent magnetic field have been obtained by previous methods, which are reconsidered in view of their dependence on the assumed angular distribution. An upper limit of 100 G comes from determinations of magnetic line broadening, a lower limit of 10 G from observed Hanle-effect depolarization.In our observations the linear polarization has been recorded with a precision of 10-4 with good spectral resolution. Further improvements are impeded by the lack of telescopes with large photon collecting areas and small instrumental polarization.  相似文献

Using the AT1 CCD camera at the Echelle spectrograph of the GCT at Tenerife, solar Doppler rotation measurements in the photospheric lines Fe I 6301.5 Å and 6302.5 Å and in the chromospheric line Na-D2 5890.0 Å have been made. The line shifts measured at different heliographic latitudes around the limb were corrected for observer motion and converted into sidereal rotation rates. At the equator the observed chromospheric rotation rate is about 8 % larger than the photospheric rate, and the average observed Doppler rotation rate is not very much different from the mean rotation rates deduced from all published tracer works and all published Doppler works. Near the poles (where tracer methods rely on extrapolation) both the chromospheric and the photospheric rotation rate are slightly smaller than the all Doppler rate and are considerably smaller than the extrapolated all tracer rate. If all previous measurements of solar rotation are taken into account, a surface rotation law with lower error bounds than previously possible can be derived.  相似文献

The radial velocity and profile variations of UV lines of the shell star Tau have been examined in the IUE spectra obtained in 1978–1982. The neutral atoms, and once or twice-ionized ions (exceptCii, Aliii, Siiii resonance lines) follow the same velocity variations as in the visual spectra, while the Siiv andCiv resonance lines show a constant negative velocity (–50 km s–1 at the core). The Aliii,Cii resonance lines and probably Feiii (mult. A re-interpretation is offered for both the galactic center lobe and the high-velocity clouds in the galactic halo: the galactic center lobe is a 2-sided chimney for relativistic pair plasma emerging from the center of the Milky Way (=Sag A*) and streaming as 2 jets through the halo. The channel walls of the flow serve as cold traps for the galactic fountain whenceHi clouds rain back into the disk.  相似文献

The recent tentative identification of a chromospheric emission line at = 4097.342 Å with the Niii transition 3s 2 S 1/2 $#x2212; 3p 2 P 3/2 is discussed. It is shown that the observed intensity is inconsistent with the observed flux in the XUV resonance lines and considerably greater than the predicted intensity from the chromosphere-corona transition zone. Microphotometry of a plate shows that the line is a short interval of continuum between absorption lines.  相似文献

The observational set-up for a detailed study of the velocity, intensity and magnetic-field fine structure in and around a sunspot is described. On highly resolved spectra we detected in the vicinity of a sunspot a large number of points with strong magnetic fields (magnetic knots). The magnetic field in these knots causes a striking decrease of the line depth (or a line gap after Sheeley, 1967). The properties of the magnetic knots are: (1) magnetic fields up to 1400 gauss; (2) diameter 1100 km; (3) coincidence with dark intergranular spaces; (4) generally downward material motion; (5) lifetime>30min; (6) estimated total number around an unipolar spot 2000; (7) combined magnetic flux comparable to the sunspot flux; (8) coincidence with Ca+ plages.For the smallest sunspots (pores) we obtained magnetic fields >1500 gauss. Hence a magnetic field of about 1400–1500 gauss appears to be a rather critical level for pore and spot formation.We found a large number of small areas producing line gaps without measurable magnetic field. These non-magnetic gap-regions coincide with bright continuum structures.Some aspects arising from the occurrence of hundreds of magnetic knots in an active region are discussed in the last section.Presently guest investigator at the Göttingen Observatory.Previously member of the High Altitude Observatory solar project at Sacramento Peak (Contract Nr. Observations related to the photospheric velocity field of Cephei can be interpreted as follows: during the whole cycle of pulsations the only motion form in the atmosphere is a wave motion with a nearly constant full amplitude of approximately 15 km s–1, and a wavelength of about 106 km (which are quantities, about equal to the amplitudes of pulsational velocity and radius of the star). There are no significant small-scale turbulent velocity components. The microturbulent and macroturbulent velocities, as derived from spectral line observations, are fully compatible with this picture.  相似文献

Magnetic field strengths in small umbrae and pores are measured using the line Ti i 6064.6 Å, which is formed purely in umbrae. We find field strengths between 1900 and 2600 G in the darkest parts of small umbrae and of well established pores; the spread is partly intrinsic. The field strength in diffuse transient protopores amounts to 1500 ± 250 G.We demonstrate that usage ofthe well-known magnetic line 6173.3 Å and other Fe i lines yield systematically smaller magnetic field strengths than Ti i 6064.6 Å. This is due to blending ofthe components with the central component due to photospheric stray light and the component. Routine measurements are therefore unreliable for small spots 251-01Based on observations at Sacramento Peak Observatory, Sunspot, New Mexico, U.S.A.  相似文献
