Dynamic spectra of incremental solar radio emission reveal that (mostly faint) pulsating and morphologically similar structures, including patterns of bright spots, dominate between ca. 250 and 320 MHz. As individual bursts these bright spots are similar to Type I bursts but they appear in an entirely different environment. This kind of activity is indicative of Type IV emission and seems to favour the generation of Type III bursts. Often its boundary with storm activity at the lower side of the band is rather sharp.  相似文献

The investigation of solar radio emission fluctuations at the wavelength - 3 cm led to the discovery of a visible increase in pulsations with periods of about 30–120 min prior to proton flares. These pulsations were observed before all (seven) proton flares included in our cycle of observations from 1969 to 1974. The phenomenon was not found to occur before non-proton flares. The assumption is made that the observed pulsations are a manifestation of pre-flare instability in coronal structures. Estimations have been made for fluctuations of the gyro-resonance radiation from the regions above spots associated with the magnetic field variations when a groove instability of a coronal condensation is developed. They are in good agreement with the observational data. The discovered manifestation of the pre-flare instability in fluctuations of the solar radio emission open new ways to study the flare development and to predict geo-effective phenomena on the Sun.  相似文献

K X-ray line emission from S, Ar, Ca and Fe is calculated for conditions likely to exist in solar flares. We consider both the non-thermal and thermal phases of flares as indicated by X-ray observations. Impulsive non-thermal events seen at the onset of a flare at photon energies > 20 keV generally give rise to small K line fluxes (<250 photons cm-2 s-1) on the basis of data presented by Kane and Anderson. The amount of S K radiation in particular depends sensitively on the lower-energy bound of the non-thermal electron distribution giving rise to the impulsive burst, offering a possible means of determining this. Thermal K emission is significant for only Fe ions. For S, Ar and Ca, the temperatures required for a sizeable number of electrons with energies greater than the K-ionization potential will also strip these elements to ionization stages too high for K transitions to be possible. Comparison of thermal K emission from iron during an intense solar flare leads to a very high emission measure on the basis of these calculations, but such a value seems to be compatible with an analysis of the 1–3 Å continuum during the same event.NAS/NRC Resident Research Associate.Visiting Scientist, High Altitude Observatory, NCAR, Boulder, Colo. 80302.  相似文献

We study the spatial and spectral characteristics of the 3.5 to 30.0 keV emission in a solar flare of 9 May, 1980. We find that: (a) A classical thick target interpretation of the hard X-ray burst at energies E 10 keV implies that approximately all the electrons contained within the flare loop(s) have to be accelerated per second. (b) A thermal model interpretation does not fit the data, unless its characteristics are such that it does not represent an efficient alternative to the acceleration model. We thus conclude that: (c) Acceleration does take place during the early phase of the impulsive hard X-ray event, but substantial amount of the emission at low (<20 keV) energies is of thermal origin. (d) We show the evolution of the energy content in the flare volume, and find that the energy input requirements are such that 102 erg cm-3 s-1 have to be released within the flare structure(s), for a period of time comparable to that of the hard X-ray burst emission. We also point out that although the main flare component ( 90% of the soft X-ray emission) was confined to a compact magnetic kernel, there are evidences of interaction of this structure with a larger field structure connecting towards the leading portion of the active region, where secondary H brightenings were observed.  相似文献

Using photospheric and H observations and total radio flux data we study a two-ribbon flare in AR NOAA 4263 which was a part of a flare event complex on July 31, 1983. We find some facts which illuminate the special way of flare triggering in the analysed event. Around a double spot the photospheric vector magnetic field is discussed with respect to the chromospheric activities. In one of the spots the feet of long stretched loops are pushed down under steepening loops rooted in the same spot. This causes energy build-up by twist and shear in the stretched loops. One foot of the two-ribbon flare (triggered in the stretched and underpushed loop system) roots in a part of the spot umbra and penumbra where the field runs in extremely flat like a pressed spiral spring. A strange radio event, starting before the flares, can be interpreted as a precursor activity of the flare event complex. The radio data support the view that the analyzed flare process and the given magnetic field structure, respectively, are not very effective in energetic particle generation and escape.  相似文献

A study has been made of the variation in hard (E 10 keV) X-radiation, H and microwave emission during the impulsive phase of solar flares. Analysis shows that the rise-time in the 20–30-keV X-ray spike depends on the electron hardness, i.e., t rise exp (0.87 ). The impulsive phase is also marked by an abrupt, very intense increase in H emission in one or more knots of the flare. Properties of these H kernels include: (1) a luminosity several times greater than the surrounding flare, (2) an intensity rise starting about 20–30 s before, peaking about 20–25 s after, and lasting about twice as long as the hard spike, (3) an effective diameter of 3000–6000 km for class 1 flares, representing less than 1/8-1/2 of the main flare, (4) a location lower in the chromosphere than the remaining flare, (5) essentially no expansion prior to the hard spike, (6) a position within 6000 km of the boundary separating polarities, usually forming on both sides of the neutral line near both feet of the same tube of force, (7) a shape often resembling isogauss contours of the photospheric field indicated on magnetograms and (8) total radiated energy less than l/50 that of the hard electrons. Correspondingly, impulsive microwave events are characterized by: (1) the detection of a burst at 8800 MHz for every X-ray spike ifthe number of electrons above 100 keV is greater than 1033, (2) great similarity in burst structure with 20–32 keV X-rays but only at f > 5000 MHz, (3) typical low frequency burst cutoff between 1400–3800 MHz, and (4) maximum emission at f > 7500 MHz. Finally the H, X-ray and microwave data are combined to present a picture of the impulsive phase consistent with the above observations.  相似文献

A study is made of Lyman continuum observations of solar flares, using data obtained by the Harvard College Observatory EUV spectroheliometer on the Apollo Telescope Mount. We find that there are two main types of flare regions: an overall mean flare coincident with the H flare region, and transient Lyman continuum kernels which can be identified with the H and X-ray kernels observed by other authors. It is found that the ground level hydrogen population in flares is closer to LTE than in the quiet Sun and active regions, and that the level of Lyman continuum formation is lowered in the atmosphere from a mass column density m 5/sx 10–6 g cm–2 in the quiet Sun to m 3/sx 10–4 g cm–2 in the mean flare, and to m 10–3g cm–2 in kernels. From these results we derive the amount of chromospheric material evaporated into the high temperature region, which is found to be - 1015g, in agreement with observations of X-ray emission measures. A comparison is made between kernel observations and the theoretical predictions made by model heating calculations, available in the literature; significant discrepancies are found between observation and current particle-heating models.  相似文献

The amount of circular polarization of the total solar radio emission at 7 GHz present permanent changes after the occurrence of certain radio bursts associated with larger flares. For isolated S-components, associated with such flares the changes of the polarization degree sranges between 0.004 to 0.1, and appears to be a function of the flare importance. A semi-qualitative interpretation associates swith magnetic field reductions at the S-component, agreeing fairly well with a flare mechanism based on collisionless dissipation of magnetic energy, corresponding to energies in the range of 1030 to 1032 ergs, assuming an average model for the coronal condensations.  相似文献

Multispacecraft observations of energetic protons (E p 500 keV) were obtained by the APL/JHU instruments on board the IMP-7 and 8 spacecraft and the Voyager-1 and 2 deep space probes, in order to study the generation of solar flare Energetic Storm Particle (ESP) events at widely separated locations on the same shock front. These locations are presumably characterized, on the average, by different interplanetary magnetic field-shock front configurations, i.e. quasi-perpendicular (quasi-parallel) shocks for eastern (western) solar flare sites. The multispacecraft energetic proton observations show that substantial differences in the ESP proton intensity enhancements (defined as the ratio of intensity increases near the shock over the ambient solar proton population) are detected at these energies for locations on the shock front with wide heliolongitude separations. In particular, large ESP proton intensity enhancements are detected at locations on the shock front for which the solar flare site generating the shock is to the east of the spacecraft meridian, whereas only weak ESP events are observed at locations on the same shock for which the flare site is to the west of the spacecraft meridian. The results indicate that acceleration of ESP protons to E p 500 keV takes place exclusively at the quasi-perpendicular shock front domain, consistent with the shock drift acceleration mechanism (Armstrong et al., 1977).  相似文献

High velocity H ejections were observed in association with an important solar flare on March 12, 1969, and simultaneously with Type II followed by Type IV radio emission detectable to 3–4 solar radii (R ) from the center of the Sun. From a sequence of H coronagraph photographs, trajectories and velocity determinations were made for fragments of the flare spray which was visible to a distance of 2 R . The temporal and spatial relationship between the optical and radio events is discussed. The mass motions appear to be controlled by the gravitational field while the fragments move in the direction of the open magnetic field lines.  相似文献

The absorption of cosmic radio noise passing through the ionosphere may be described as a function of radio wave frequencyA(f e ) f e -n , with n 2.0 for spatially uniform precipitation of electrons and n < 2.0 for spatially nonuniform precipitation. Using multifrequency riometer recordings at SANAE, the following observations are reviewed: (1) The frequency distribution of the power index, n, obtained from 4 min averaged absorptions during 1983, shows a most probable value around n 1.5, indicating that mostly energetic electrons are precipitated spatially structured onto the upper atmosphere, as in optical aurora. (2) Multifrequency riometer recordings suggest that field-aligned ionospheric irregularities have scattered additional cosmic radio waves from the central region of the Galaxy into the fields of views of the riometer antennae during an auroral absorption event in the early morning hours of 27 July, 1982. With the power reflectivity by ionospheric irregularities inversely proportional to the fourth power of radio wave frequency, as required by the Bragg condition, an estimated 70% increase in the 20 MHz radio flux at 01:22 UT, at the strong absorption peak, can explain the strongly reduced absorption observed in 20 MHz relative to 30 and 51.4 MHz. (3) Gradual increases in absorptions observed at all three riometer frequencies from onset at 11:50 UT of the largest solar proton ground level enhancement on 29 September, 1989, until 18:00 UT, suggest diffusion of the much more intense low energy protons from the polar cap to the L=4.0 geomagnetic field shell and subsequent precipitation at SANAE due to the South Atlantic Geomagnetic Anomaly. (4) The flux of electron energy deposited per second at SANAE is closely related to geomagnetic activity, but has a lower maximum during the years 1971 and 1980 of solar polar magnetic reversals than in the years 1976 and 1986/87 of minimum solar activity. (5) A significant correlation has been found between the arrival of single-hop whistlers and 30 MHz riometer absorption events, using point statistics. The maximum absorption at 30 MHz was 0.04 dB with a delay of 3 ± 2 s relative to the whistler.  相似文献

We have observed 10 solar bursts during the thermal phase using the Haystack radio telescope at 22 GHz. We show that these high frequency flux observations, when compared with soft X-ray band fluxes, give useful information about the temperature profile in the flare loops. The microwave and X-ray band fluxes provide determinations of the maximum loop temperature, the total emission measure, and the index of the differential emission measure (q(T)/T = cT–1). The special case of an isothermal loop ( = ) has been considered previously by Thomas et al. (1985), and we confirm their diagnostic calculations for the GOES X-ray bands, but find that the flare loops we observed departed significantly from the isothermal regime. Our results ( = 1–3.5) imply that, during the late phases of flares, condensation cooling ( 3.5) competes with radiative cooling ( 1.5). Further, our results appear to be in good agreement with previous deductions from XUV rocket spectra ( 2–3).  相似文献

Two dimensional source brightness distributions at 26.4 MHz for solar bursts of spectral type II, III, IV, and V are derived from observations with a multiple-baseline, time-sharing interferometer system. It was designed explicitly to study the large angle (40 halo) component of low frequency solar bursts first reported by Weiss and Sheridan (1962). Thirty-two bursts occurring in the interval of June–August, 1975, were fit with a circular gaussian core and an elliptical gaussian halo component. Half-power halo diameters (E-W×N-S) averaged 30×28 for type III bursts and 42×27, 28×37, 30×25 for type V, II and IV bursts respectively. Typical core sizes fell in the range of 10±4 giving 31 halo to core size ratio. All burst types were found to have some large angle structure: the specific intensity was 10% compared to the core but the total power in each component was comparable. Two processes for producing the core-halo structure of type III bursts are compared: scattering and refraction of a point source and refraction from many sources over an extended region. It is concluded that the core can be explained by either model but the halo is more consistent with emission from an extended source region of 40° in longitude.  相似文献

We present the two-dimensional imaging observations of radio bursts in the frequency range 25–50 MHz made with the Clark Lake multifrequency radioheliograph during a coronal mass ejection event (CME) observed on 1984, June 27 by the SMM Coronagraph/Polarimeter and Mauna Loa K-coronameter. The event was spatially and temporally associated with precursors in the form of meter-decameter type III bursts, soft X-ray emission and a H flare spray. The observed type IV emission in association with the CME (and the H spray) could be interpreted as gyrosynchrotron emission from a plasmoid containing a magnetic field of 2.5 G and nonthermal electrons with a number density of 105 cm–3 and energy 350 keV.On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Kodaikanal, India.  相似文献

The present paper contains an attempt to formulate a theory, based on fast electrons hypothesis, of the chromospheres of flare stars. At the same time we shall undertake a survey of observations on the emission lines of flare stars and comparisons with the theory. The general discussion in the introduction concerning the civilian right of fast electron hypothesis is followed by sections in which the following problems are tackled: the anatomy of the light curve of the flare in UV Cet-type stars or its division into two components; the sources of radiation, ionizing hydrogen and other elements, and the estimation of their power in cold dwarf stars with emission lines; conditions for the excitation of emission lines in the chromospheres of those stars; the problem of duration of luminescence of flare stars in the emission lines (observations and theory); the electron temperature and electron concentration in the chromospheres of flare stars; the problem of the luminescence of emission lines in the quiescent star; the degree of ionization and the role of inelastic collisions of the electrons in the chromosphere of flare stars; the profiles of emission lines, their broadening and intensification during the flare; the dependence of the infensity of emission lines on the flare amplitude; the nature and peculiarities of two types of the Haro flares; the impact of radiation dilution and the spectral class of the star on the equivalent width of the emission lines; the possibility of exciting the forbidden lines; the problem of generation of the emission lines of neutral and ionized helium; the possibility of the Lyman-alpha emission in flare stars, the expected parameters of such emission — the radiation power, the equivalent width and profile of the Lyman-alpha line; the possibility of the presence of the strongest (after the -line) emission line — of doublet 2800 Mgii in the spectra of flare stars, the expected value of the intensity and equivalent width of that line.  相似文献

Type III solar radio bursts observed from 3.0 to 0.45 MHz with the ATS-II satellite over the period April–October 1967 have been analyzed to derive two alternative models of active region streamers in the outer solar corona. Assuming that the bursts correspond to radiation near the electron plasma frequency, pressure equilibrium arguments lead to streamer Model I in which the streamer electron temperature derived from collision damping time falls off much more rapidly than in the average corona and the electron density is as much as 25 times the average coronal density at heights of 10 to 50 solar radii (R ). In Model II the streamer electron temperature is assumed to equal the average coronal temperature, giving a density enhancement which decreases from a factor of 10 close to the Sun to less than a factor of two at large distances (> 1/4 AU). When the burst frequency drift is interpreted as resulting from the outward motion of a disturbance that stimulates the radio emission, Model I gives a constant velocity of about 0.35c for the exciting disturbance as it moves to large distances, while with Model II, there is a decrease in the velocity to less than 0.2c beyond 10 R .  相似文献

We present observational results from studying the quasi-periodicities in global solar radio flux during periods of enhanced noise storm activity, over durations of 4 hr a day (`intra-day' variations), observed at 77.5 MHz with the newly commissioned log-periodic array tracking system at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory. Positional information on the storm centers was obtained with the radio imaging data from the Nan\c cay Radio Heliograph (NRH), while their active region counterparts on the photosphere (and the overlying chromosphere ) were located from the H images of the Big Bear Solar Observatory. The quasi-periodicity in flux was found to be 110 min, with the fluctuation in flux being 3(±1.5) solar flux units (s.f.u.). The results of such pulsations are interpreted qualitatively as evidence for coronal seismology.  相似文献

A developing active region near the center of the solar disk was observed for 80 min at the center and the wings of H. Ellerman bombs lying both below an Arch Filament System and near sunspots were studied at H - 1.0 Å and H - 0.75 Å. We determined their average contrast, lifetime, size and we studied their flux as a function of time. We found evidence that the size of Ellerman bombs increases with height. The time curves of flux provide evidence for both impulsive and gradual energy release. Under the AFS the Ellerman bombs form a cellular pattern with a characteristic size of 3.1 × 103 km. Fifty percent of the bombs appear and disappear in pairs, possibly associated with bipolar emerging magnetic flux tubes.  相似文献

Two distinct types of centimeter solar bursts, classified simple, have been identified and related to the position (with respect to a sunspot) of the related flare. Type S in which the flare occurs directly over the spot has a radio spectrum with a maximum beyond 10 GHz, type P which occurs away from the spot has its maximum occurring near 3 GHz. Considering the structure of the spot magnetic field and invoking the synchrotron effect, it is shown that the origin of the radio burst may be attributed to a burst of energetic electrons with an energy peak near 3 MeV.  相似文献

Radio-silent -ray flares are solar flares that lack any significant emission in the (non-thermal) radio wave band during their impulsive hard X-ray and -ray emission phases. Flares with extremely suppressed long-wavelength spectra have previously been reported by White et al. (1992) and have been discussed in different context by Hudson and Ryan (1995). A striking example of a radio-silent flare was observed by SMM during the onset of the 6 March 1989 energetic -ray flare. We argue that the absence of radio emission at wavelengths longer than microwave wavelengths is an indication of the compactness of the flare rather than that the flare did not exhibit non-thermal properties. Probably the flare site was restricted to altitudes above the photosphere in a newly emerging loop configuration lower than the equivalent altitude corresponding to an emission frequency of 1.4 GHz. This implies the presence of a dense and highly magnetized closed field configuration confining the electron component which causes the impulsive -ray continuum. Reconnection in such a configuration did not lead to open magnetic fields and streamer formation. Acceleration of particles in the and hard X-ray bursts was restricted to closed field lines. Thermal expansion of the loop system may subsequently lead to the generation of radially propagating blast waves in the solar corona which are accompanied by type II solar radio bursts and decimetre emissions. The emission during the onset of the flare was dominated by a continuum originating from electron bremsstrahlung at X-ray and -ray energies with only little evidence for the presence of energetic ions. It is, therefore, concluded that energetic electrons have been primary and not secondary products of the particle acceleration process.  相似文献
