Two-dimensional isophotes of the extreme solar corona (r max 45 R ) have been derived from integrated vidicon pictures taken from the Moon's surface by the unmanned probes Surveyors 6 and 7. These data were calibrated through use of previously published values for the coronal brightness gradient along the ecliptic. The resulting structure of the outer corona is compared to ground-based observations of the innermost corona 1.125 r/R 2.0 made by the High Altitude Observatory K-coronameter. The possible existence of a streamer seen by Surveyor 7 is analyzed over the region 15 r 22.5 R .  相似文献

Previous global models of coronal magnetic fields have used a geometrical construction based on a spherical source surface because of requirements for computational speed. As a result they have had difficulty accounting for (a) the tendency of full magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models to predict non-radial plasma flow out to r 10r and (b) the appreciable magnitude, 3, of B r , (the radial component of B) consistently observed at r 1 AU. We present a new modelling technique based on a non-spherical source surface, which is taken to be an isogauss of the underlying potential field generated by currents in or below the photosphere. This modification of the source surface significantly improves the agreement between the geometrical construction and the MHD solution while retaining most of the computational ease provided by a spherical source surface. A detailed comparison between the present source-surface model and the MHD solution is made for the internal dipole case. The resulting B field agrees well in magnitude and direction with the coronal B field derived from the full MHD equations. It shows evidence of the slightly equatorward meridional plasma flow that is characteristic of the MHD solution. Moreover, the B field obtained by using our non-spherical source surface agrees well with that observed by spacecraft in the vicinity of the Earth's orbit. Applied to a solar dipole field with a moment of 1 G-r 3 , the present model predicts that B r at r 1 AU lies in the range of 1–2 and is remarkably insensitive to heliomagnetic latitude. Our method should be applicable also to more general (i.e., more realistic) configurations of the solar magnetic field. Isogauss surfaces for two representative solar rotations, as calculated from expansions of observed photospheric magnetic-field data, are found to show large and significant deviations from sphericity.  相似文献

Exact corotations are equilibrium points in the phase space of the asteroidal elliptic restricted problem of three bodies averaged over the synodic period, at a mean-motions resonance. If the resonant critical angle is =(p+q) jup pq, exact corotations are double resonant motions defined by the conditionsd/dt=0 andd(– jup )/dt=0. The first condition is characteristic of the periods resonance(p + q) : p and the second one is a secular resonance equivalent to that usually known as thev 5-resonance. This paper presents the symmetric solutions =0 (mod ), = jup (mod ). Corotations have a coherence property which is unique in non-collisional Celestial Mechanics: An elementary calculation shows that, in the neighbourhood of these solutions, the motions cluster aroundp independent longitude values and are, in each cluster, as close together as and are close to the equilibrium values.  相似文献

Two sets of accurate approximate expressions for the gyrosynchrotron radiation in the transverse propagation case are presented for the first time. They contain emissivity /BNand absorptivity B/Nfor e-mode, effective temperature T effand frequency of peak brightness p. The expressions are designed for the range 2 to 7 of electron energy spectral index and for the ranges from 2 to 10 and 10 to 100 of harmonic numbers s(=/B). Their statistical error is, respectively, ±18% and ±29% for /BNand B/Nfor 10/B100, ±128% and and ±170% for 2/B10.  相似文献

The equations for the variation of the osculating elements of a satellite moving in an axi-symmetric gravitational field are integrated to yield the complete first-order perturbations for the elements of the orbit. The expressions obtained include the effects produced by the second to eighth spherical harmonics. The orbital elements are presented in the most general form of summations by means of Hansen coefficients. Due to their general forms it is a simple matter to estimate the perturbations of any higher harmonic by simply increasing the index of summation. Finally, this paper gives the respective general expressions for the secular perturbations of the orbital elements. The formulae presented should be useful for the reductions of Earth-satellite observations and geopotential studies based on them.List of Symbols semi-major axis - C jk n (, ) cosine functions of and - e eccentricity of the orbit - f acceleration vector of perturbing force - f sin2t - i inclination of the orbit - J n coefficients in the potential expansion - M mean anomaly - n mean motion - p semi-latus rectum of the orbit - R, S, andW components of the perturbing acceleration - r radius-vector of satellite - r magnitude ofr - S jk n (, ) sine functions of and - T time of perigee passage - u argument of latitude - U gravitational potential - true anomaly - V perturbing potential - G(M++m) (gravitational constant times the sum of the masses of Earth and satellite) - n,k coefficients ofR component of disturbing acceleration (funtions off) - n,k coefficients ofS andW components of disturbing acceleration (functions off) - mean anomaly at timet=0 - X 0 n,m zero-order Hansen coefficients - argument of perigee - right ascension of the ascending node  相似文献

A statistical investigation of the slowly varying component of the 9.1-cm solar radio emission is based upon the Stanford radioheliograms covering the years 1962–66. On the average the peak value of the brightness temperature T b is proportional to the area covered by the corresponding spot group. However, in individual cases the observed T b is definitely lower or higher than is to be expected from the size of the spot group. We introduce the concept microwave importance I m of the spot group, which is the T b to be expected from the Zürich class and spot number; and the concept relative brightness B r, which is the ratio of the observed T b to I m. This leads to the distinction of faint, normal and bright sources with B r 0.8, 0.8 < B r < 1.2 and B r 1.2 respectively. B r is correlated with the maximum magnetic-field strength H observed in the spot group and with the flux-density spectrum of the source. The yearly average of B r and the average flux-density spectrum vary with the phase of the solar cycle. An analysis of the results is based upon the electron-density distribution in the condensation, which was visible at the solar limb during the eclipse of February 5, 1962, and on an adopted temperature distribution with a central value of 4 × 106 K. The computed T b, including gyro-resonance absorption, agrees with the value derived from the microwave importance of the spot group and B r = 0.5, which shows that in the current gyro-resonance models the electron density is underestimated. The variation of T b with the size of the spot group can be explained by varying the dimensions of the condensation in area and in height, if the central density and temperature remain constant. The statistical relationships between B r and H and between B r and the flux-density spectrum yield a model for the differences between faint and bright sources: B r increases with the contribution from the gyro-resonance absorption and with the central electron density. For paper I see Solar Phys. 7, 448. A semi-continuous hierarchy, (i.e., one in which there are galaxies outside clusters, clusters outside superclusters etc.), is examined using an expression of the field equations of general relativity in a form due to Podurets, Misner and Sharp. It is shown (a) that for a sufficiently populous hierarchy, the thinning factor( i+1/ i [r i /r i+1] is approximately equal to the exponentN in a continuous density law (=aR –N) provided (r i /r i+1)3-1; (b) that a hierarchical Universe will not look decidedly asymmetric to an observer like a human being because such salient observers live close to the densest elements of the hierarchy (viz stars), the probability of the Universe looking spherically symmetric (dipole anisotropy0.1 to such an observer being of order unity; (c) the existence of a semi-continuous or continuous hierarchy (Peebles) requires that 2 if galaxies, not presently bound to clusters were once members of such systems; (d) there are now in existence no less than ten arguments for believing 2, though recent number counts by Sandageet al. seem to be in contradiction to such a value; (e) Hubble's law, withH independent of distance, can be proved approximately in a relativistic hierarchy provided (i)N=2, (ii)2GM(R)/c 2 R1; (iii)Rc (iv)M0 in a system of massM, sizeR (f) Hubble's law holds also in a hierarchy with density jumps; (g)H100 km s–1 Mpc–1; (h) objects forming the stellar level of the hierarchy (in a cosmology of the Wilson type) must once have had 2GM/c 2 R1; (i) there is a finite pressurep=2Ga in all astrophysical systems (a=R N ,N2); (j) for the Galaxy, theory predictsp G7×10–12 dyn cm–2, observation givesp G5×10–12 dyn cm–2; (k) if the mass-defect (or excess binding energy) hypothesis is taken as a postulate, all non-collapsed astrophysical systems must be non-static, and any non-static, p0 systems must in any case be losing mass; (1) the predicted mass-loss rate from the Sun is 1012 g s–1, compared to 1011 g s–1 in the observed solar wind; (m) the mass-loss rates known by observation imply timescales of 5×109 years for the Sun and 1010 years for other astrophysical systems; (n) degenerate superdense objects composed of fermions must haveN-2 if they were ever at their Schwarzschild radii and comprised a finite numberN B of baryons; (o)N B1057N for degenerate fermion and boson systems; (p)285-4; (q) the metric coefficients for superdense bodies give equations of motion that imply equal maximum luminosities for all evolving superdense bodies (L max1059 erg s–1); (r) larger bodies have longer time-scales of energy radiation atL max (10–5 s for stars,1 h for QSO's) (s) expansion velocities are c soon after the initial loss of equilibrium in a superdense object; (t) if the density parametera(t) in aR –N isa=a (non-atomic constants of physicsc, G, A), andA, thenN=2; (u) N2 is necessary to giveMM at the stellar level of the hierarchy;(v) systems larger than, and including, galaxies must have formed by clumping of smaller systems and not (as advocated by Wertz and others) in a multiple big bang.  相似文献

General theory of electrical conductivity of a multicomponent mixture of degenerate fermions in a magnetic fieldB, developed in the preceding article (this volume), is applied to a matter in neutron star interiors at densities 0, where 0 = 2.8×1014 g cm–3 is the standard nuclear matter density. A model of free-particle mixture ofn, p, e is used, with account for appearance of -hyperons at > c , where c 40. The electric resistivities along and acrossB, and , and the Hall resistivity H are calculated and fitted by simple analytical formulae at c and > c for the cases of normal or superfluid neutrons provided other particles are normal. Charge transport alongB is produced by electrons, due to their Coulombic collisions with other charged particles; is independent ofB and almost independent of the neutron superfluidity. Charge transport acrossB at largeB may be essentially determined by other charged particles. If c , one has = [1 + (B/B 0)2] for the normal neutrons, and for the superfluid neutrons, while H = B/B e for both cases. HereB e 109 T 8 2 G,B 01011 T 8 2 G, andT 8 is temperature in units of 108 K. Accordingly for the normal neutrons atBB 0, the transverse resistivity suffers an enhancement, 1/4 1. When 50 andB varies from 0 toBB p 1013 T 8 2 G, increases by a factor of about 103–104 and H changes sign. WhenBB p , remains constant for the superfluid neutrons, and H B 2 for the normal neutrons, while H B for any neutron state. Strong dependence of resistivity onB, T, and may affect evolution of magnetic fields in neutron star cores. In particular, the enhancement of at highB may noticeably speed up the Ohmic decay of those electric currents which are perpendicular toB.  相似文献

We show that the overall densityg() of asymptotic acoustic frequencies of a star obeys a Weyl lawg() D–1, whereD is the dimensionality of the oscillating stellar configuration. For realistic stars with a finite non-zero surface sound speed,D is equal to the actual dimensionality of the star,D=3. For formal models with a vanishing sound velocity at the surface, heuristic arguments lead to a dimensionality parameterD=4.5. The empirical frequencies of Eddington's standard model are found to be consistent with the latter distribution, with reasonable agreement already occurring in the low-frequency range > i 2× fundamental radial mode. We argue that real stars obey this 3.5-power law in some finite frequency interval i << f , f being a very high frequency critically depending on the surface sound velocity, while the full asymptotic law, withD=3, holds for > f .  相似文献

As a consequence of the Taylor–Proudman balance, a balance between the pressure, Coriolis and buoyancy forces in the radial and latitudinal momentum equations (that is expected to be amply satisfied in the lower solar convection zone), the superadiabatic gradient is determined by the rotation law and by an unspecified function of r, say, S(r), where r is the radial coordinate. If the rotation law and S(r) are known, then the solution of the energy equation, performed in this paper in the framework of the ML formalism, leads to a knowledge of the Reynolds stresses, convective fluxes, and meridional motions. The ML-formalism is an extension of the mixing length theory to rotating convection zones, and the calculations also involve the azimuthal momentum equation, from which an expression for the meridional motions in terms of the Reynolds stresses can be derived. The meridional motions are expanded as U r(r,)=P 2(cos)2(r)/r 2+P 4(cos)4(r)/r 2 +..., and a corresponding equation for U (r,). Here is the polar angle, is the density, and P 2(cos), P 4(cos) are Legendre polynomials. A good approximation to the meridional motion is obtained by setting 4(r)=–H2(r) with H–1.6, a constant. The value of 2(r) is negative, i.e., the P 2 flow rises at the equator and sinks at the poles. For the value of H obtained in the numerical calculations, the meridional motions have a narrow countercell at the poles, and the convective flux has a relative maximum at the poles, a minimum at mid latitudes and a larger maximum at the equator. Both results are in agreement with the observations.  相似文献

An expression is derived for the fluctuation (t) in emergent intensity (observed at some wavelength in a Fraunhofer line or the continuum) caused by a perturbation in temperature (z, t) in the Sun's atmosphere. If the contribution function for the observed intensity is single-peaked near z and if (z) and p(z) are not too rapidly varying, then (t) m (z , t)+N p(z , t) where m and N depend on the structure of the atmosphere. We compute M, N, and contribution functions for several values of and in the inner wings of the K line (13933 Caii).Presently on leave of absence from the Institute for Astronomy, Honolulu, Hawaii. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The optical depth at the head of the Lyman continuum, H, is determined at a number of positions in three hedgerow prominences using spectroheliograms (5 × 5 resolution) of C III 977, LC 896, and O IV 554 observed with the Harvard experiment on Skylab. At heights greater than 10 above the limb the maximum value of H is 30 to 50, which occurs at the central part of the prominences. For one of the prominences the determination of H is found to be consistent with data from spectroheliograms of Mg X 625. The degree of ionization of hydrogen is estimated from the intensity of LC 896 at H 1. In the central part of a model prominence N P/N HI1.9 for a reasonable range of the electron densities, where N P and N HI are the proton density and the neutral hydrogen density, respectively.  相似文献

The microorganism model of interstellar grains is investigated by spectroscopy from the infrared (IR), visible to the ultraviolet (UV) wave regions.E. coli, yeast and spores ofBacillus subtilis exhibit absorption bands at =3.1 and 9.7 m; they also exhibit several absorptions at 68 m which are in agreement with the observed IS extinction curves. To obtain the extinction curves in the visible and UV regions, dry films of microorganism are prepared on a MgF2 plate or synthesized quartz plate and their spectra measured. In the wavelength region 190400 nm, conventional spectrophotometers are adopted for the measurement. The extinction curve of the film ofE. coli is similar to the observed IS curve. For the wave-range 100<<400 nm, a vacuum UV spectrometer is adopted to avoid absorptions due to O2 in the atmosphere. The extinction spectra by this method are in agreement with the result obtained by the conventional method where comparison is possible. The extinction curves ofE. coli and yeast are such that they incrase towards the short wavelength and exhibit a peak at -190 nm, which is different from the well-known IS peak at =220 nm. It remains to be seen whether interstellar low temperatures (1040 K) can shift the peak position in the extinction curve of biochemical materials.  相似文献

A critical analysis of the methods and results of estimating the optical thickness of the dust component in the Martian atmosphere 0, the particle size r 0, and the imaginary part of the refractive index n ihas shown the following. (1) Observational data on the brightness distribution over the Martian disk as well as the phase dependences of diffusely reflected light and the azimuthal dependences of diffusely transmitted light are most appropriate to use only for verifying the reliability of the aerosol parameters determined by other methods. (2) If the morning and evening fogs in the atmosphere are disregarded, the Bouguer–Lambert–Beer method used to analyze the solar-brightness attenuation measured on the planetary surface yields overestimated extraatmospheric solar intensity I 0and atmospheric optical depth 0. At the Viking 1landing site, I 0and 0could be overestimated by a factor of 1.7 and by 0.35, respectively. (3) The aerosol size determined by analyzing measurements of the azimuthal dependences for the Martian sky brightness at low elevations of the Sun most likely corresponds to the fog particles. (4) If overestimated values of I 0were used to standardize the observations of the solar radiation transmitted by the Martian atmosphere, then n iwere also overestimated; using overestimated 0also affected the reliability of the latter. (5) The problem of reliability of the available 0and r 0estimates for periods of high atmospheric transparency is yet to be solved. For the highest activity of the dust storm in 1971, it was found that 4.5 r 0 7.5 m for the lognormal particle size distribution with 2= 0.2 and the optical thickness of a dust cloud 0 15. (6) The spectral values of the apparent albedo of Mars measured in October 1971 at a phase angle of 42° in the spectral range 0.250 0.717 allowed the imaginary part of the refractive index to be estimated in terms of a model of a dust cloud composed of spherical particles with the lognormal size distribution with r 0= 4.5 m and 2= 0.2.  相似文献

The nonlinear self-excited oscillations of the envelopes of low-massive highly luminous stars are described. The parameters for these models wereM=0.8M ,M bol=–5.5, –5.84 mag,T eff=4500, 5000, 5500 K. The oscillations have been found to consist of the standing wave pulsation near the envelope bottom and running waves in outer layers. The ratio of the standing wave frequency s to the average frequency of the running waves r increases with the stellar luminosity: s / r =1.7 whenM bol=–5.5 mag and s / r =2.4 whenM bol=–5.84 mag. The frequency of oscillations near the photosphere is found to be in close agreement with the critical frequency for running waves. Mass loss from these stars is caused by shocks. It has been shown that agreement between FG Sge's period change observed during the last decade and the period-luminosity relation for double shell stars takes place when FG Sge's luminosity isM bol=–5.96 mag.  相似文献

Antimatter meteors probably enter the Earth's atmosphere. If they have the ability to escape complete vaporization during their infall flight, it may be possible, that a fraction of their original mass could survive for short or long time, depending on the mechanisms of ablation. In case of ablation through the annihilation process only, the lifetime of such an object is following the simple relation = (N L R)/(rA), where andA are the density and the atomic weight of the antimatter fragment respectively,R is its radius,r is the rate of annihilation per cm2 of its surface, and N L is the Loschmidt number.  相似文献

Free convection effects on MHD flow past a semi infinite porous flat plate is studied when the time dependent suction velocity changes in step function form. The solution of the problem is obtained in closed form for the fluid with unit Prandtl number. It is observed that for both cooling and heating of the plate the suction velocity enhances the velocity field.
