This study proposed a novel approach for generating crushable agglomerates with realistic particle shapes in discrete element modeling (DEM). The morphologies of sand particles were obtained by X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning and image processing. Based on the particle surface reconstructed by spherical harmonic analysis, the crushable agglomerates with realistic particle shapes can be generated in DEM simulations. The results of single particle crushing tests showed that particle shapes significantly influence the fracture patterns and crushing strengths of sand particles. Furthermore, two one-dimensional compression tests were conducted to investigate the particle shape effect on micro- and macro-mechanical behaviors of crushable sands.  相似文献

We have developed a new approach for the numerical modeling of deformation processes combining brittle fracture and viscous flow. The new approach is based on the combination of two meshless particle-based methods: the discrete element method (DEM) for the brittle part of the model and smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) for the viscous part. Both methods are well established in their respective application domains. The two methods are coupled at the particle scale, with two different coupling mechanisms explored: one is where DEM particles act as virtual SPH particles and one where SPH particles are treated like DEM particles when interacting with other DEM particles. The suitability of the combined approach is demonstrated by applying it to two geological processes, boudinage, and hydrofracturing, which involve the coupled deformation of a brittle solid and a viscous fluid. Initial results for those applications show that the new approach has strong potential for the numerical modeling of coupled brittle–viscous deformation processes.  相似文献

In the present work, a methodology for setting up virgin stress conditions in discrete element models is proposed. The developed algorithm is applicable to discrete or coupled discrete/continuum modeling of underground excavation employing the discrete element method (DEM). Since the DEM works with contact forces rather than stresses there is a need for the conversion of pre-excavation stresses to contact forces for the DEM model. Different possibilities of setting up virgin stress conditions in the DEM model are reviewed and critically assessed. Finally, a new method to obtain a discrete element model with contact forces equivalent to given macroscopic virgin stresses is proposed. The test examples presented show that good results may be obtained regardless of the shape of the DEM domain.  相似文献

The discrete element method (DEM) is crucial in investigating and modeling the elementary behavior of granular materials under varying loading conditions, especially those that cannot be adequately investigated via conventional laboratory testing. However, the application of the DEM in simulations that involve complex loading paths under undrained conditions is scarce, primarily owing to the inability to maintain a constant-volume condition. This paper presents a unified discrete element approach that can apply arbitrary loading paths while satisfying the equivalent undrained condition. The proposed method comprises two parts: (1) a novel strategy that determines the virtual pore pressure under complex undrained loading conditions, and (2) an advanced undrained servomechanism that can simultaneously control each stress component independently. Numerical algorithms corresponding to three new undrained loading paths, that is, true triaxial test, rotational shear, and traffic loading path that have never been simulated using DEM are successfully implemented in a unified manner. Macroscale simulation results under these loading paths are qualitatively in good agreement with their experimental counterparts, thereby confirming the practicality and robustness of the proposed approach. Furthermore, in-depth discussions on the DEM results from these three new loading paths are presented from microscopic perspective.  相似文献

The paper presents Cauchy stress tensor computation over parallel grids of message passing interface (MPI) parallel three-dimensional (3D) discrete element method (DEM) simulations of granular materials, considering spherical and nonspherical particles. The stress tensor computation is studied for quasi-static and dynamic conditions, and its resulting symmetry or asymmetry is discussed within the context of classical continuum mechanics (CCM), granular materials mechanics (GMM), and micropolar continuum mechanics (MCM). The average Cauchy stress tensor computation follows Bagi's and Nicot's formulations and is verified within MPI parallel 3D DEM simulations involving dynamically adaptive compute grids. These grids allow calculation of temporal and spatial distributions of stress across granular materials under static and dynamic conditions. The vertical stress component in gravitationally deposited particle assemblies exhibits nonuniform spatial distributions under static equilibrium, and its zone of maximum value changes during the process of gravitational pluviation and collapse. These phenomena reveal a microstructural effect on stress distribution within granular materials that is attributed to their discrete particulate nature (particle size, shape, gradation, boundary conditions, etc).  相似文献

A homogenization strategy for granular materials is presented and applied to a three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM), that uses superellipsoids as particles. Macroscopic quantities are derived from the microscopic quantities resulting from a DEM simulation by averaging over representative volume elements (RVEs). The implementation of an RVE is described in detail regarding the definition and discretization of the RVE boundary. The homogenization strategy is validated by DEM simulations of compression and shear tests of cohesionless granular assemblies. Finally, an elasto-plastic material model is fitted to the resulting stress–strain curves.  相似文献

As we transition into an era of data generation and collection, empirical summaries in the classical continuum modeling of granular materials cannot take full advantage of the increasingly larger data sets. This work presents a data-driven model for modeling granular materials, with the material data being extracted from discrete element method (DEM) simulations. A long short-term memory (LSTM) network is then employed to learn the mechanical behaviors of granular materials from the material dataset. Particular emphasis is placed on three elements: modification of LSTM unit cell, phase space sampling, and material history parameterization. The LSTM unit cell is modified so that the initial hidden state can be specified as the initial states of granular materials. Massive DEM simulations are performed to consider the effects of particle size distribution, initial density, confining pressure, and loading path on the mechanical behaviors of granular materials. The history-dependency of the granular materials is well represented by the architecture of the LSTM network and internal variable-based history parameterization. We compare the model predictions against DEM simulations to assess the performance of the proposed data-driven model. The results demonstrate that the model can predict the material behaviors of granular materials with different microstructures and initial states and reproduce the material responses under complex nonmonotonic loading paths. This data-driven model exhibits good generalization ability and high prediction accuracy in various situations.

Wave propagation in granular materials is numerically studied using discrete element simulation. Primary interest is concerned with linking material microstructure with wave propagational behaviors for materials composed of elliptical particles. The discrete element (DEM) scheme uses a nonlinear hysteretic contact law which accounts for differences related to the radius of curvature at the interparticle point of contact. Modeling results yield information on wave speed and amplitude attenuation on two-dimensional, meso-domain model systems of both regular and random assemblies. Particulate models were numerically generated using a biasing scheme whereby partial control of particular fabric measures could be achieved. Three specific fabric measures which were used to characterize the granular material models include branch, contact normal and orienation vectors. DEM simulation results indicated that wave speed and attenuation generally correlated with vector distributions of these fabric variables. A power law relation was proposed between wave speed/attenuation and three averaged projected fabric variables based on orientation, contact normal and branch vectors. Predictions from this specific relation correlated reasonably well with DEM results.  相似文献

Interaction between solid particles and fluid is of fundamental interest to scientists and engineers in many different applications—cardiopulmonary flows, aircraft and automobile aerodynamics, and wind loading on buildings to name a few. In geomechanics, particle shape significantly affects both particle-particle and particle-fluid interaction. Herein, we present a generalized method for modeling the interaction of arbitrarily shaped polyhedral particles and particle assemblages with fluid using a coupled discrete element method (DEM) and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) formulation. The coupling between DEM and LBM is achieved through a new algorithm based on a volume-fraction approach to consider three-dimensional convex polyhedral particles moving through fluid. The algorithm establishes the interaction using linear programming and simplex integration and is validated against experimental data. This approach to modeling the interaction between complex polyhedral particles and fluid is shown to be accurate for directly simulating hydrodynamic forces on the particles.  相似文献

This study aims at providing a hybrid calibration framework to estimate Hertz-type contact parameters (particle-scale shear modulus and Poisson ratio) for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional discrete element modelling (DEM). On the basis of statistically isotropic granular packings, a set of analytical formulae between macroscopic material parameters (Young modulus and Poisson ratio) and particle-scale Hertz-type contact parameters for granular systems are derived under small-strain isotropic stress conditions. However, the derived analytical solutions are only estimated values for general models. By viewing each DEM modelling as an implicit mathematical function taking the particle-level parameters as independent variables and employing the derived analytical solutions as the initial input parameters, an automatic iterative scheme is proposed to obtain the calibrated parameters with higher accuracies. Considering highly nonlinear features and discontinuities of the macro-micro relationship in Hertz-based discrete element models, the adaptive moment estimation algorithm is adopted in this study because of its capacity of dealing with noise gradients of cost functions. The proposed method is validated with several numerical cases including randomly distributed monodisperse and polydisperse packings. Noticeable improvements in terms of calibration efficiency and accuracy have been made.  相似文献

Breakage of particles will have greatly influence on mechanical behavior of granular material(GM)under external loads, such as ballast, rockfill and sand. The discrete element method(DEM)is one of the most popular methods for simulating GM as each particle is represented on its own.To study breakage mechanism of particle breakage,a cohesive contact mode is developed based on the GPU accelerated DEM code-Blaze-DEM.A database of the 3D geometry model of rock blocks is established based on the 3D scanning method. And an agglomerate describing the rock block with a series of non-overlapping spherical particles is used to build the DEM numerical model of a railway ballast sample, which is used to the DEM oedometric test to study the particles’breakage characteristics of the sample under external load.Furthermore,to obtain the meso-mechanical parameters used in DEM,a black-analysis method is used based on the laboratory tests of the rock sample.Based on the DEM numerical tests, the particle breakage process and mechanisms of the railway ballast are studied. All results show that the developed code can better used for large scale simulation of the particle breakage analysis of granular material.  相似文献

This paper presents a unified modeling framework to investigate the impacts of debris flow on flexible barriers, based on coupled computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD‐DEM). We consider a debris flow as a mixture of fluid and particles where the fluid and particle phases are modeled by the CFD and the DEM, respectively. The fluid‐particle coupling is considered by the exchange of interaction forces between CFD and DEM calculations. The flexible barrier is simulated by the DEM as a network of bonded particles with remote interactions. The proposed coupled CFD‐DEM approach enables us to conveniently handle the complicated three‐way interactions among the fluid, the particles, and the flexible barrier structure for debris flow impact simulations. The proposed approach is first used to investigate the influences of channel inclination and the volumetric solid fraction in a debris mixture on the impact force, the resultant deformation, and the retained mass in a flexible barrier. The predictions agree well with existing experimental and numerical studies. We further examine the possible failure modes of a flexible barrier under debris flow impact and their underlying mechanisms. The performance of different components in a flexible barrier system, including single wires, double twists and cables, and their load sharing mechanisms, are carefully evaluated. The proposed unified framework offers a novel, promising pathway towards physically based, quantitative analysis and design of flexible barriers for debris flow mitigation.

In order to get quantitatively reliable results with the discrete element method, or DEM, it becomes more and more necessary to reproduce accurately the shape of irregular particles. A simple and fast original method to create complex shapes by assembling spheres together is proposed. This paper shows its ability to reproduce a shape, its degree of resolution and the number of spheres required.  相似文献

Simulation of fracturing processes in porous rocks can be divided into two main branches: (i) modeling the rock as a continuum enhanced with special features to account for fractures or (ii) modeling the rock by a discrete (or discontinuous) approach that describes the material directly as a collection of separate blocks or particles, e.g., as in the discrete element method (DEM). In the modified discrete element (MDEM) method, the effective forces between virtual particles are modified so that they reproduce the discretization of a first-order finite element method (FEM) for linear elasticity. This provides an expression of the virtual forces in terms of general Hook’s macro-parameters. Previously, MDEM has been formulated through an analogy with linear elements for FEM. We show the connection between MDEM and the virtual element method (VEM), which is a generalization of FEM to polyhedral grids. Unlike standard FEM, which computes strain-states in a reference space, MDEM and VEM compute stress-states directly in real space. This connection leads us to a new derivation of the MDEM method. Moreover, it enables a direct coupling between (M)DEM and domains modeled by a grid made of polyhedral cells. Thus, this approach makes it possible to combine fine-scale (M)DEM behavior near the fracturing region with linear elasticity on complex reservoir grids in the far-field region without regridding. To demonstrate the simulation of hydraulic fracturing, the coupled (M)DEM-VEM method is implemented using the Matlab Reservoir Simulation Toolbox (MRST) and linked to an industry-standard reservoir simulator. Similar approaches have been presented previously using standard FEM, but due to the similarities in the approaches of VEM and MDEM, our work provides a more uniform approach and extends these previous works to general polyhedral grids for the non-fracturing domain.  相似文献

Biot theory predicts wave velocities in a saturated granular medium using the pore geometry, viscosity, densities, and elastic moduli of the solid skeleton and pore fluid, neglecting the interaction between constituent particles and local flow, which becomes essential as the wavelength decreases. Here, a hydro-micromechanical model, for direct numerical simulations of wave propagation in saturated granular media, is implemented by two-way coupling the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the discrete element method (DEM), which resolve the pore-scale hydrodynamics and intergranular behavior, respectively. The coupling scheme is benchmarked with the terminal velocity of a single sphere settling in a fluid. In order to mimic a small amplitude pressure wave entering a saturated granular medium, an oscillating pressure boundary on the fluid is implemented and benchmarked with the one-dimensional wave equation. The effects of input waveforms and frequencies on the dispersion relations in 3D saturated poroelastic media are investigated with granular face-centered-cubic crystals. Finally, the pressure and shear wave velocities predicted by the numerical model at various effective confining pressures are found to be in excellent agreement with Biot analytical solutions, including his prediction for slow compressional waves.  相似文献
