The ubiquity of nongyrotropic particle populations in space plasmas warrants the study of their characteristics, in particular their stability. The unperturbed nongyrotropic distribution functions in homogeneous media without sources and sinks (closed phase space) must be rotating and time-varying (TNG), whereas consideration of open phase spaces allows for the occurrence of homogeneous and stationary distributions (SNG). The free energy brought about by the introduction of gyrophase organization in a particle population can destabilize otherwise thoroughly stable magnetoplasmas (or, a fortiori, enhance pre-existing gyrotropic instabilities) and feed intense wave growth both in TNG and SNG environments: The nongyrotropic (electron or ion) species can originate unstable coupling among the gyrotropic characteristic waves. The stability properties of these two types of homogeneous nongyrotropy shall be contrasted for parallel (with respect to the ambient magnetic field) and perpendicular propagation, and their potential role as wave activity sources shall be illustrated resorting to solutions of the appropriate dispersion equations and numerical simulations.  相似文献

A regression model is used to study spatiotemporal distributions of solute content ion concentration data (calcium, chloride and nitrate), which provide important water contamination indicators. The model consists of three random and one deterministic components. The random space/time component is assumed to be homogeneous/stationary and to have a separable covariance. The purely spatial and the purely temporal random components are assumed to have homogenous and stationary increments, respectively. The deterministic component represents the space/time mean function. Inferences of the random components involve maximum likelihood and semi-parametric methods under some restrictions on the data configuration. Computational advantages and modelling limitations of the assumptions underlying the regression model are discussed. The regression model leads to simplifications in the space/time kriging and cokriging systems used to obtain space/time estimates at unobservable locations/instants. The application of the regression model in the study of the solute content ions was done at a global scale that covers the entire region of interest. The variability analysis focuses on the calculation of the spatial direct and cross-variograms and the evaluation of correlations between the three solute content ions. The space/time kriging system is developed in terms of the space direct and cross-variograms, and allows the separate estimation of the regression model components. Maps of these components are then obtained for each one of the three ions. Using the estimates of the purely spatial component, spatial dependencies between the ions are studied. Physical causes and consequences of the space/time variability are discussed, and comparisons are made with previous analyses of the solute content dataset.  相似文献

Auroras have been extensively studied using images obtained by space-borne experiments. We use global UVI images obtained from Polar and simultaneous plasma data obtained by the 3D instrument on Wind from the near-earth plasma sheet to study the dynamics of auroras with different size and intensity. Unstable phase space ion distributions are detected in the plasma sheet under diverse geomagnetic and solar wind IMF conditions (positive and negative Bz) and at all phases of a substorm. These results indicate that plasma instability processes with different disturbance levels operate in the plasma sheet and produce a continuum of auroral size and intensity. The criteria for triggering an instability are dependent on the local properties of the plasma distributions. These observations suggest a new framework to integrate previous and current results and a new way to examine the causal relationships of auroral and plasma sheet dynamics.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of analytical and numerical model calculations of elastic surface displacements caused by earthquakes and the processes of earthquake nucleation. The analytical calculations are focused on the model of a homogeneous elastic space; the numerical calculations also cover models of radially inhomogeneous distributions of elastic moduli in the crust and upper mantle described by the PREM model.  相似文献

Collisionless shocks are well-known to be very efficient energizers of ions. At the first step of energization relatively low energy suprathermal ion distributions are formed in the vicinity of the quasiperpendicular collisionless shock front during ion reflection and direct transmission. These distributions are formed promptly and at the scale of the shock width mainly due to the ion interaction with the quasistationary electromagnetic structure of the front itself. Their features are intimately related to the fine structure of the shock front in the sense that they depend not only on the bulk shock parameters, such as Mach number, but also on the details of the distribution of the fields, in particular, shock width. Therefore, studies of these distributions may provide valuable information about the shock structure itself. We review the observational data collected during in situ measurements (mainly at the Earth bow shock) and compare it to the numerical simulations and theoretical developments. The developed theory of the ion dynamics in the stationary shock front relates the ion reflection and heating to the insufficient deceleration of the ions in the ramp by the cross-shock potential, as compared to the expected downstream drift velocity, required by the Rankine-Hugoniot relations. As a result, the direct flow energy it transferred into the gyration energy, leading to the gyration of the ion distribution as a whole and enhanced spread in the velocity space, that is, effective collisionless heating. Anisotropy and nongyrotropy are typical features of ion distributions at both low and high-Mach number shocks, which is confirmed by observations. Time-dependent fields, which are not considered in the stationary shock model, are thought to provide subsequent smoothing and isotropization of the ion distributions. These processes occur at scales substantially larger than the shock width.  相似文献

The drift velocity of an auroral arc is compared with the component of F-region plasma velocity in the same direction for ten cases where the arc is seen to move steadily equatorward for several minutes without any major change in appearance or orientation. In most cases the two velocities are close, but on two occasions the drift velocity of the arc is much higher than the plasma velocity. From the cases studied it appears that during the growth and recovery phase of the substorm cycle the arc moves with a velocity close to the convection velocity, but during the expansion phase this is not the case.  相似文献

The microscopic consequences of the presence of nonlinear vortex structures in the near-Earth plasma dispersive medium are studied in this work. In dispersive media, strongly localized vortex structures contain trapped particles, cause pronounced density fluctuations, and intensify transfer processes, mixing in a medium; i.e., they can form strong vortex turbulence. Turbulence is represented as a gas in the ensemble of strongly localized (therefore, weakly interacting) identical vortices composing the ground state. Vortices with different amplitudes are randomly located in space (since they interact with one another) and are described statistically. It is assumed that the steady turbulent state is formed through a balance of mutually competing effects: spontaneous generation of vortices due to nonlinear steepening of the disturbance front, ^noise transfer to small scales, and collisional or collisionless damping of disturbances in the HF region. Noise scaling in the inertial interval takes place since structures merge during their collision. A magnetized plasma medium in the magnetosheath is considered. A new type of turbulent fluctuation spectra with respect to wavenumbers k −8/3, which is in satisfactory agreement with satellite observations in space plasma, has been determined. The medium particle diffusion on an ensemble of vortices has also been studied. It has been established that the interaction between structures themselves and between structures and medium particles causes anomalous diffusion in the medium. The effective diffusion coefficient square roothly depends on the noise stationary level.  相似文献

基于OpenSees-OpenFresco-MTS混合试验系统,选取关键构件底层中柱,进行大空间地下结构地震响应混合试验研究。在混合试验过程中,取结构底层中柱为试验子结构,取结构剩余部分与土体为数值子结构。为了满足试验要求,开发了一种专用于混合试验的可变刚度钢构件。通过更换柱脚螺杆改变试验装置侧向刚度。在混合试验前,根据数值模型中对应单元侧向刚度确定钢构件侧向刚度;根据幅值比和相位差等频域指标评价混合试验结果。试验结果显示:在上海人工波工况、El Centro波工况和Kobe波工况中,理论结果与试验结果匹配良好。在以大空间地下结构地震响应为研究对象时,基于OpenSees-OpenFresco-MTS的混合试验系统具有良好的稳定性与精确性。  相似文献

We analyse the fluctuations of the electron density and of the magnetic field in the Earth’s magnetosheath to identify the waves observed below the proton gyrofrequency. We consider two quiet magnetosheath crossings i.e. 2 days characterized by small-amplitude waves, for which the solar wind dynamic pressure was low. On 2 August 1978 the spacecraft were in the outer magnetosheath. We compare the properties of the observed narrow-band waves with those of the unstable linear wave modes calculated for an homogeneous plasma with Maxwellian electron and bi-Maxwellian (anisotropic) proton and alpha particle distributions. The Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) mode appears to be dominant in the data, but there are also density fluctuations nearly in phase with the magnetic fluctuations parallel to the magnetic field. Such a phase relation can be explained neither by the presence of a proton or helium AIC mode nor by the presence of a fast mode in a bi-Maxwellian plasma. We invoke the presence of the helium cut-off mode which is marginally stable in a bi-Maxwellian plasma with <alpha> particles: the observed phase relation could be due to a hybrid mode (proton AIC + helium cut-off) generated by a non-Maxwellian or a non-gyrotropic part of the ion distribution functions in the upstream magnetosheath. On 2 September 1981 the properties of the fluctuations observed in the middle of the magnetosheath can be explained by pure AIC waves generated by protons which have reached a bi-Maxwellian equilibrium. For a given wave mode, the phase difference between B \Vert and the density is sensitive to the shape of the ion and electron distribution functions: it can be a diagnosis tool for natural and simulated plasmas.  相似文献

We present results from a multi-instrument study of events on February 13–14, 1996. The data were taken by the EISCAT incoherent-scatter radar, the Sussex, MPI and FMI all-sky cameras, the IRIS riometer and the IMAGE and SAMNET magnetometer networks. Observations from the various instruments are compared to establish the concurrency of the radar, optical and absorption signatures of arcs, and to make a detailed study of their dynamics. The distribution of electric field strength near each arc is determined and the drift velocity of each arc is compared with EISCAT measurements of F-region plasma velocity. Two multiple-onset substorms are studied in detail, the behaviour of each arc depends on the phase of the substorm in which it is observed. Our major points are: (1) All arcs observed during the growth or recovery phases are seen to drift at velocities close to the average convection velocity. In contrast, arcs observed during the expansion phase travel at a significantly different velocity. (2) There is strong qualitative evidence that arcs which drift with the convection are optically less bright than arcs with a large relative velocity with respect to the surrounding plasma so that arc brightening at substorm onset is clearly associated with a sharp increase in relative velocity. (3) The observations confirm the current electrodynamics model of arcs and, moreover, we notice a difference in the conductivity behaviour with respect to the direction of the arc movement. It is generally true that when the band of enhanced electric field is in advance of a moving arc the gradient in conductivity is very sharp at the leading edge of the arc and hence the largest electric fields are seen very close to the arc. When, however, the band of enhanced field follows the moving arc the increase in Pedersen conductivity is more gradual, and in such cases too the maximum electric field strength is observed at greater distances from the optical arc itself.  相似文献

This study compares the measurements of electron density and temperature and the integral airglow intensity at 630 nm in the SAR arc region and slightly south of this (obtained by the Isis 2 spacecraft during the 18 December 1971 magnetic storm), with the model results obtained using the time dependent one-dimensional mathematical model of the Earth’s ionosphere and plasmasphere. The explicit expression in the third Enskog approximation for the electron thermal conductivity coefficient in the multicomponent mixture of ionized gases and a simplified calculation method for this coefficient presents an opportunity to calculate more exactly the electron temperature and density and 630 nm emission within SAR arc region are used in the model. Collisions between N2 and hot thermal electrons in the SAR arc region produce vibrationally excited nitrogen molecules. It appears that the loss rate of O+(4S) due to reactions with the vibrationally excited nitrogen is enough to explain electron density depression by a factor of two at F-region heights and the topside ionosphere density variations within the SAR arc if the erosion of plasma within geomagnetic field tubes, during the main phase of the geomagnetic storm and subsequent filling of geomagnetic tubes during the recovery phase, are considered. To explain the disagreement by a factor 1.5 between the observed and modeled SAR arc electron densities an additional plasma drift velocity \sim-30 m s−1 in the ion continuity equations is needed during the recovery phase. This additional plasma drift velocity is likely caused by the transition from convecting to corotating flux tubes on the equatorward wall of the trough. The electron densities and temperatures and 630 nm integral intensity at the SAR arc and slightly south of this region as measured for the 18 December 1971 magnetic storm were correctly described by the model without perpendicular electric fields. Within this model framework the effect of the perpendicular electric field \sim100 mv m−1 with a duration \sim1 h on the SAR arc electron density profiles was found to be large. However, this effect is small if \sim1-2 h have passed after the electric field was set equal to zero.  相似文献

A poleward-progressing 630 nm optical feature is observed between approximately 0100 UT and 0230 UT (0400 MLT to 0530 MLT) by a meridian-scanning photometer (MSP) located at Ny Alesund, Svalbard. Simultaneous coherent HF radar measurements indicate a region of poleward-expanding back-scatter with rapid sunward plasma flow velocity along the MSP meridian. Spatial maps of the backscatter indicate a stationary backscatter feature aligned obliquely with respect to the MSP meridian, which produces an impression of poleward-expansion as the MSP progresses to later MLT. Two interpretations of the observations are possible, depending on whether the arc system is considered to move (time-dependent) or to be stationary in time and apparent motion is produced as the MSP meridian rotates underneath it (time-independent). The first interpretation is as a poleward motion of an east-west aligned auroral arc. In this case the appearance of the region of backscatter is not associated with the optical feature, though the velocities within it are enhanced when the two are co-located. The second interpretation is as a polar arc or theta aurora, common features of the polar cap under the prevailing IMF northwards conditions. In this case the backscatter appears as an approximately 150 km wide region adjacent to the optical arc. In both interpretations the luminosity of the optical feature appears related to the magnitude of the plasma flow velocity. The optical features presented here do not generate appreciable HF coherent backscatter, and are only identifiable in the backscatter data as a modification of the flow by the arc electrodynamics.  相似文献

Multigaussian kriging technique has many applications in mining, soil science, environmental science and other fields. Particularly, in the local reserve estimation of a mineral deposit, multigaussian kriging is employed to derive panel-wise tonnages by predicting conditional probability of block grades. Additionally, integration of a suitable change of support model is also required to estimate the functions of the variables with larger support than that of the samples. However, under the assumption of strict stationarity, the grade distributions and important recovery functions are estimated by multigaussian kriging using samples within a supposedly spatial homogeneous domain. Conventionally, the underlying random function model is required to be stationary in order to carry out the inference on ore grade distribution and relevant statistics. In reality, conventional stationary model often fails to represent complicated geological structure. Traditionally, the simple stationary model neither considers the obvious changes in local means and variances, nor is it able to replicate spatial continuity of the deposit and hence produces unreliable outcomes. This study deals with the theoretical design of a non-stationary multigaussian kriging model allowing change of support and its application in the mineral reserve estimation scenario. Local multivariate distributions are assumed here to be strictly stationary in the neighborhood of the panels. The local cumulative distribution function and related statistics with respect to the panels are estimated using a distance kernel approach. A rigorous investigation through simulation experiments is performed to analyze the relevance of the developed model followed by a case study on a copper deposit.  相似文献

The general properties of the effect of the acceleration and loss rate on the time variations in relativistic electron fluxes have been studied based on the analytical solutions to the nonstationary equation for the particle distribution function, taking into account diffusion in the momentum space (stochastic acceleration) and loss (due to particle escape from the acceleration region). The results of calculating the time variations in the fluxes of electrons with energies of 1 MeV are presented for different ratios of the loss-to-acceleration rates. The cases of instantaneous and prolonged injection of low-energy particles are considered. It has been proposed to estimate the acceleration and loss rate effectiveness based on the observed electron flux decrease rate at the end of the magnetic storm recovery phase.  相似文献

Liquid distributions in unsaturated porous media under different gravitational accelerations and corresponding macroscopic gaseous diffusion coefficients were investigated to enhance understanding of plant growth conditions in microgravity. We used a single-component, multiphase lattice Boltzmann code to simulate liquid configurations in two-dimensional porous media at varying water contents for different gravity conditions and measured gas diffusion through the media using a multicomponent lattice Boltzmann code. The relative diffusion coefficients (D rel) for simulations with and without gravity as functions of air-filled porosity were in good agreement with measured data and established models. We found significant differences in liquid configuration in porous media, leading to reductions in D rel of up to 25% under zero gravity. The study highlights potential applications of the lattice Boltzmann method for rapid and cost-effective evaluation of alternative plant growth media designs under variable gravity.  相似文献

The results of coordinated EISCAT and TV-camera observations of a prebreakup event on 15 November 1993 have been considered. The variations of the luminosity of two parallel auroral arcs, plasma depletion on the poleward edge of one of these arcs as well as electron and ion temperatures in front of a westward travelling surge were studied. It was found that a shortlived brightening of a weak zenith arc before an auroral breakup was accompanied by fading of an equatorial arc and, vice versa. A plasma depletion in the E region was detected by the EISCAT radar on the poleward edge of the zenith arc just before the auroral breakup. The plasma depletion was associated with an enhancement of ion (at the altitudes of 150–200 km) and electron (in E region) temperatures. During its occurrence, the electric field in the E-region was extremely large (150 mV/m). A significant increase in ion temperature was also observed 1 min before the arrival of a westward travelling surge (WTS) at the radar zenith. This was interpreted as the existence of an extended area of enhanced electric field ahead of the WTS.  相似文献

从麦克斯韦旋度方程出发可以直接导出瞬变电磁场扩散方程,然而扩散方程不含电场对时间的一阶导数,不能构成显式的时域有限差分方程,借鉴du Fort-Frankel有限差分离散方法引入虚拟位移电流项构建显式时域有限差分方程.对Wang和Hohmann的经典时域算法进行了两点改进:第一,通过将矩形回线源电流密度加入麦克斯韦方程组的安培环路定理方程,实现回线源瞬变电磁激发源加入;第二,在计算中考虑关断时间.第一点改进使时域有限差分方程考虑了一次场的计算,并且源的计算不再依赖均匀半空间模型响应作为初始条件,使算法能够适应表层电阻率不均匀时的三维复杂模型.由于实际观测中不可能出现阶跃电流的关断形式,第二点改进可以方便设置发射电流下降沿.采用改进的三维时域有限差分正演算法对均匀半空间模型、四类三层模型、均匀半空间中含有低阻块体模型进行了计算并分别与解析解、线性数字滤波解、积分方程解和Wang的三维时域有限差分解进行了对比验证.以H模型为例,采用建立的三维时域有限差分正演算法计算了不同关断时间的斜阶跃脉冲回线源瞬变电磁中心点感应电动势衰减曲线.以实际地质资料为基础,构建包含两层采空区的三维复杂模型,以1 μs的极短关断时间进行了复杂模型定回线源瞬变电磁响应计算,并计算了该复杂模型的视电阻率曲线.  相似文献
