A quantitative sterane biomarker study was conducted on a series of paralic freshwater lacustrine shale samples ranging in maturity from immature to near oil window maturity taken from Section 3 of the Shahejie Formation (Es3) in the Liaohe Basin, N.E. China. Concentrations of 5α(H),14α(H),17α(H)-20S and 5α(H),14β(H),17β(H)-steranes remain nearly constant throughout the sample suite. However, the decrease in the absolute concentrations of the 20R-5α(H),14α(H),17α(H)-C29 steranes with increasing maturity results in an increase in the conventionally defined maturity parameters, 20S/(20S + 20R)-ααα and αββ/(ααα + αββ) sterane ratios. In addition, the data suggest that relatively early generation of 5α(H),14α(H),17α(H)-20S and 5α(H),14β(H),17β(H)-steranes has occurred in lacustrine sediments with a vitrinate reflectance 0.3% (Ro). The data provide strong support for the major importance of relative thermal stability of epimers, but do not exclude the possibility of isomerization as a viable mechanism for production.  相似文献

The extent of sterane isomerisation reactions and the moretane/hopane ratios of 234 crude oils, taken world wide, from a wide variety of source rocks of differing geological ages, have been measured. This data indicates that in 78 crude oils derived from Tertiary source rocks, sterane isomerisation reactions as determined by the 20S/(20S + 20R) ration of the C29 5α(H), 14α(H), 17α(H) normal-steranes and the C29 iso/(iso + normal) ratio [iso = 5α (H), 14β(H), 17β(H)] are mainly incomplete and sometimes considerably so. In addition, the same crude oils have 17β(H), 21α(H)-moretane/17α(H), 21β(H)-hopane ratios which are significantly greater (predominantly in the range 0.10–0.30) than those of crude oils derived from older, mature source rocks (mainly less than 0.1).This data, for crude oils, lends support to the hypothesis, proposed by Mackenzie and McKenzie (1983) for source rock extracts, that the time/temperature constraints of sterane isomerisation reactions are such that the time available for isomerisation in Tertiary sediments is generally insufficient, despite generation of crude oil at relatively high temperatures. An alternative hypothesis is that the incomplete sterane isomerisation of Tertiary crude oils may be due to generation of these crude oils from their deltaic, land plant-containing source rocks under low heating conditions.A third hypothesis proposes that the Tertiary crude oils may have picked up the incompletely isomerised steranes from immature sediments during migration. Although possible in particular instances, such a mechanism does not appear to be generally applicable since, in that case, the phenomenon would then appear to be restricted to the Tertiary. The higher moretane/hopane ratios of the Tertiary crude oils could suggest that constraints, similar to those applying in sterane isomerisation, also operate in the conversion of moretane to 17α(H)-hopane.  相似文献

The effect of biodegradation on steranes and terpanes in crude oils   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Steranes and terpanes biodegrade at a slower rate than isoprenoids and survive moderate biodegradation. Heavy biodegradation results in destruction of regular steranes, survival of diasteranes (20R better than 20S) and tricyclic terpanes and transformation of hopanes to Ring A/B demethylated hopanes. These survivors can be used as source fingerprints in biodegraded crudes. The structure of predominant steranes in undegraded to moderately degraded fossil fuels was proven to be 14β, 17β(H) (20R + S) by molecular spectroscopy. These compounds plus the 20S epimers of regular 5α-steranes (20R) were identified as major constituents and their 5β-counterparts as minor components in a cholestane isomerizate (300°C, Pt on C), allowing assessment of relative thermodynamic stabilities. An observed increase of optical activity in heavily degraded crudes from three different basins is interpreted to be the result of bacterial transformation of terpanes and steranes to new optically active species plus enrichment of the latter by n + isoparaffin depletion rather than total bacterial synthesis. Diagnostic ion profiling by GC-MS-C is a convenient tool for surveying the relative abundance of individual diasteranes and regular steranes plus distinguishing epimeric and ring skeletal isomeric series in complex fossil fuel mixtures. A new practical method of determining the absolute quantities of individual steranes by spiking with 5β-cholane and integration of mass chromatograms is described.  相似文献

The thermodynamic stability of selected alkylated, dealkylated and rearranged 17α- and 17β-hopane isomers in the C27, C28, C29, C30 and C31 families were calculated using molecular mechanics (MM2) methods and, where possible, calculated equilibrium ratios of certain isomers were compared with observed ratios of isomers in thermally mature crude oil samples. Those calculated and observed ratios having similar values include: (1) the relative distributions among 17β(H)/17α(H) and 21β(H)/21α(H)-hopanes including the absence of the 17β(H),21β(H)- and 17α(H),21α(H)-hopanes; (2) the 22R/22S ratios in 30-methyl-17α-hopane and 30-methyl-17β-moretane; (3) the relative distributions among 17α(H)/17β(H)- and 21α(H)/21β(H)-28,30-bisnorhopanes and among 25,28,30-trisnorhopanes, including the relatively greater stability of 17β(H) isomers in contrast to the regular hopane series; and (4) the ratios of 28(18−17S)abeo hopanes with respect to their unrearranged counterparts including the C27 compounds, Ts/Tm.  相似文献

Biomarker distributions in a suite of asphaltenes and kerogens have been analysed by flash pyrolysis directly coupled to a GCMS system. Attention has been focussed on biomarkers of the sterane and triterpane types. The sample suite under investigation consists of sediments with different kerogen types and some crude oils. Biomarker distributions in the pyrolysates have been compared with the “free” biomarkers in the corresponding saturated hydrocarbon fractions. The analyses show significant differences between the distributions of the free biomarkers and those in the pyrolysates. The latter have lower amounts of steranes while diasteranes are absent or present at low concentrations only. In the triterpane traces a shift of maximum intensity from C30 (free compounds) to C27/C29 is observed. Furthermore, the pyrolysates contain a set of triterpenes (not present among the free compounds), and there is a selective loss of “non-regular” triterpanes that are present in the saturated hydrocarbon fractions. The observed differences between pyrolysates and free hydrocarbons can be explained partly by the processes occurring during pyrolysis such as bond rupture and subsequent stabilisation of primary pyrolysis products. To a certain extent these differences also show that maturation processes occurring in sediments have effects on free biomarker molecules different from those on molecules that are enclosed in a macromolecular matrix (kerogen or asphaltenes).Differences between biomarker distributions of asphaltene and kerogen pyrolysates are relatively small. A comparison with the pyrolysates from extracted whole sediments suggests that these differences are mainly caused by interactions between the organic material and the mineral matrix during pyrolysis.Oil asphaltenes behave differently from sediment asphaltenes as their pyrolysates are more similar to the corresponding saturated hydrocarbon fractions, i.e. the differences described above are observed to a much smaller extent. This different behaviour appears to be the result of coprecipitation of a part of the maltene fraction with the oil asphaltenes.  相似文献

This study describes the reduction of functionalised model compounds to their corresponding hydrocarbons by catalytic hydropyrolysis to provide information on the release of biomarkers from kerogens and asphaltenes covalently bound through the functional groups investigated. Five model compounds were investigated, the n-C18 carboxylic acids, stearic and oleic acids; the C24 steroidal acid, 5β-cholanic acid; and the saturated and unsaturated C27 sterols, 5α-cholestanol and cholesterol. The yield and distribution of the hydrocarbons generated were assessed for the model compounds adsorbed to silica and carbon substrates, and unsupported on a bed of catalyst. The n-C18 acids are shown to be reduced to the n-C18 alkane, with a selectivity of >95% for stearic acid, although due to its unsaturated structure, oleic acid is prone to cracking, with shorter chained n-alkanes also being formed. The conversion of these compounds, adsorbed to either silica or carbon is relatively low, even at hydropyrolysis temperatures significantly above their boiling point, suggesting that interactions between the acids and substrate leading to the formation of stable entities (Si–O–C linkages in the case of silica) significantly retard volatilisation. The yield can be increased by placing the compounds directly onto a bed of catalyst, but for low boiling compounds such as stearic acid this can result in volatilisation and cracking at temperatures below that of the activation point of the catalyst. This method produced improved yields of >95% pure product for higher boiling compounds such as 5β-cholanic acid. The presence of the functional group attached to the ring system of compounds such as 5α-cholestanol does not diminish the selectivity of the technique. The double bond in cholesterol resulted in more incomplete hydrogenation with sterenes being generated, and in addition to 5α and 5β-cholestane, diasteranes were also generated via migration of the double bond.  相似文献

A novel series of 3-alkyl and 3-carboxyalkyl-5β(H)-steranes 7–10 along with a full homologous series of carboxyalkyl-sterane (C1 to C6) 4–6 with 3α(H)5α(H) configuration have been identified in marine-evaporitic oils from Fazenda Belém, Potiguar Basin (Brazil) on the basis of mass spectral interpretation. The synthesis of enantiomerically pure 3α-alkyl-5β(H)-cholestane and 3β-alkyl-5α(H)-cholestane standards and their coinjection with petroleum fractions confirmed the structural assignments.  相似文献

Twenty-seven heavy crude oils of diverse origin were geochemically assessed with respect to both bulk and mlecular composition for the purpose of identifying and quanttfying valid biomarker parameters for low maturity oils. The low thermal maturity level of many of these oils is evident from the bulk and alipathic chromatographic data, and oil sourced from both marine and terrigenous organic matter are represented. Selective metastable ion monitoring (SMIM) was employed to measure separately the distribution of C27, C28, and C29 sterane isomers. The useful maturity indicators include the C29 5α(H) 20S/20R ratio, the relative quantity of the biological sterane configuration in each of the total normal C27, C28, and C29 steranes, and the rearranged to normal sterane ratio. In addition, C27 rearranged steran es appear to form at a faster rate than C28 or C29 rearranged steranes. However, the isomerization of the C27 biological component appears to occur at a slower rate than the C29 counterpart suggesting that the former may be used as a maturity parameter at higher levels of thermal maturation. In the triterpane distributions, the C27 trisnorhopane isomers and the moretane to hopane ratios appear to be both source and maturity related and cannot be used as successful maturity parameters in oils unless they share a common source. The C31+ hopane 22S/22R equilibrium ratio appears to increase with increasing molecular weight (C31–C34).  相似文献

The distributions of polycyclic alkanes were monitored in a Neocomian sequence (well 1-ESS-34) from the Espirito Santo Basin, southeast Brazil. The profiles included, apart from regular hopanes, significant concentrations of 18α(H), 28,30-bisnorhopane and subordinate amounts of gammacerane. Sterane concentrations, normally with hopane/sterane <5, were compatible with other geochemical data indicating a predominantly planktonic/microbial source of the deposited organic matter. Sample maturities ranged from very immature to the onset of oil generation, allowing biomarker distributions to be followed along a broad maturation range. The ability of certain molecular ratios (e.g. C27 17α(H)/17β(H)hopanes) to reflect a maturity sequence with depth in the closely-spaced strata of the immature upper levels (Jiquiá Stage) showed the value of molecular techniques over classical geochemical methods (e.g. vitrinite reflectance) for the study of immature sequences. The presence in the oils of southern Espirito Santo of 28,30-bisnorhopane, gammacerane and methyl steranes in similar concentrations as in extracts of the deepest levels of the 1-ESS-34 well qualify the Jiquia Stage as the probable source rock of oils accumulated in the basin.  相似文献

A series of tricyclic terpenoid carboxylic acids (C20–C40) was found in the acidic fraction of Tasmanian tasmanite bitumen, occurring as a mixture of stereoisomers with mainly the 13β(H), 14α(H)-and 13α(H),14α(H)-configurations. These dominant acidic tricyclic constituents have the same carbon skeleton as the ubiquitous tricyclic terpane biomarkers. A novel series of ring-C monoaromatic tricyclic terpenoid carboxylic acids was also characterized. The series ranges from C19 to C39 and is the acidic counterpart of the recently described series of monoaromatic tricyclic terpanes.  相似文献

Variations in the carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of pristane, phytane, n-heptadecane (n-C17), C29 ααα 20R sterane, and aryl isoprenoids provide evidence for a diverse community of algal and bacterial organisms in organic matter of the Upper Ordovician Maquoketa Group of the Illinois Basin. Carbon isotopic compositions of pristane and phytane from the Maquoketa are positively covariant (r = 0.964), suggesting that these compounds were derived from a common source inferred to be primary producers (algae) from the oxygenated photic zone. A variation of 3‰ in δ13C values (−31 to −34‰) for pristane and phytane indicates that primary producers utilized variable sources of inorganic carbon. Average isotopic compositions of n-C17 (−32‰) and C29 ααα 20R sterane (−31‰) are enriched in 13C relative to pristane and phytane (−33‰) suggesting that these compounds were derived from a subordinate group of primary producers, most likely eukaryotic algae. In addition, a substantial enrichment of 13C in aryl isoprenoids (−14 to −18‰) and the identification of tetramethylbenzene in pyrolytic products of Maquoketa kerogen indicate a contribution from photosynthetic green sulfur bacteria to the organic matter. The presence of anaerobic, photosynthetic green sulfur bacteria in organic matter of the Maquoketa indicates that anoxic conditions extended into the photic zone. The δ13C of n-alkanes and the identification of an unusual suite of straight-chain n-alkylarenes in the m/z 133 fragmentograms of Ordovician rocks rich in Gloeocapsomorpha prisca (G. prisca) indicate that G. prisca did not contribute to the organic matter of the Maquoketa Group.  相似文献

Aerobic methanotrophy at ancient marine methane seeps: A synthesis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The molecular fingerprints of the chemosynthesis based microbial communities at methane seeps tend to be extremely well preserved in authigenic carbonates. The key process at seeps is the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), which is performed by consortia of methanotrophic archaea and sulphate reducing bacteria. Besides the occurrence of 13C depleted isoprenoids and n-alkyl chains derived from methanotrophic archaea and sulphate reducing bacteria, respectively, 13C depleted triterpenoids have been reported from a number of seep deposits. In order to evaluate the significance of these apparently non-AOM related molecular fossils, the biomarker inventories of one Campanian and two Miocene methane seep limestones are compared. These examples provide strong evidence that methane was not solely oxidized by an anaerobic process. Structural and carbon isotope data reveal that aerobic methanotrophy was common at some ancient methane seeps as well. The Miocene Marmorito limestone contains abundant 3β-methylated hopanoids (δ13C: −100‰). Most likely, 3β-methylated hopanepolyols, prevailing in aerobic methanotrophs, were the precursor lipids of these compounds. A series of isotopically depleted 4-methylated steranes (lanostanes; δ13C: −80‰ to −70‰) and similarly isotopically depleted 17β(H),21β(H)-32-hopanoic acid in the Miocene Pietralunga seep limestone also are derived probably from aerobic methanotrophs. Lanosterol, which is known to be produced by aerobic methanotrophs, is the most likely precursor of 4-methylated steranes. Less obvious is the origin of 8,14-secohexahydrobenzohopanes (δ13C: −110‰ to −107‰) in Late Cretaceous seep limestones. These hopanoids probably reflect early degradational products of precursor lipids locally produced by seep endemic aerobic methanotrophs.  相似文献

This new study was carried out in order to accurately characterize the geochemical pattern of Ousselat organic-rich facies from the Ypresian basin in central-northern Tunisia. It has been found that the organic matter is located towards the end of diagenesis/beginning of catagenesis. This assumption is supported by the relative low T max values (429–439°C) and by steranes maturity parameters such as C29 αα 20S/(20S + 20R), and C29 ββ/(ββ + αα). High HI values and the abundance of saturates (1–83%) compared to aromatics (2–27%) are unequivocal evidence of type-II organic matter as indicated by a high abundance of cholestane and the predominance of short-chain n-alkanes centred at n-C18 and at n-C20. Total organic carbon (TOC) content and petroleum potential values suggest that the Ypresian period corresponds to an anoxic event which led to the accumulation and preservation of large quantities of organic matter with high primary production. Due to their geochemical characteristics, the Lower Eocene facies represent a new potential source rocks in central-northern Tunisia.  相似文献

A petrological, organic geochemical and geochemical study was performed on coal samples from the Soko Mine, Soko Banja basin, Serbia. Ten coal and two carbonaceous clay samples were collected from fresh, working faces in the underground brown coal mine from different parts of the main coal seam. The Lower Miocene, low-rank coal of the Soko Mine is a typical humic coal with huminite concentrations of up to 76.2 vol.%, liptinite less than 14 vol.% and inertinite less than 11 vol.%. Ulminite is the most abundant maceral with variable amounts of densinite and clay minerals. Sporinite and resinite are the most common macerals of the liptinite group. Inertodetrinite is the most abundant maceral of the inertinite group. The mineral-bituminous groundmass identified in some coal samples, and carbonaceous marly clay, indicate sub-aquatic origin and strong bacterial decomposition. The mean random huminite reflectance (ulminite B) for the main coal seam is 0.40 ± 0.05% Rr, which is typical for an immature to early mature stage of organic matter. The extract yields from the coal of the Soko Banja basin ranges from 9413 to 14,096 ppm, in which alkanes constituted 1.0–20.1%, aromatics 1.3–14.7%, asphaltenes 28.1–76.2% and resins 20.2–43.5%. The saturated hydrocarbon fractions included n-C15 to n-C32, with an odd carbon number that predominate in almost all the samples. The contents of n-C27 and n-C29 alkanes are extremely high in some samples, as a contribution of epicuticular waxes from higher plants. Acyclic isoprenoid hydrocarbons are minor constituents in the aliphatic fraction, and the pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratio varies between 0.56 and 3.13, which implies anaerobic to oxic conditions during sedimentation. The most abundant diterpanes were abietane, dehydroabietane and 16α(H)-phyllocladane. In samples from the upper part of the coal seam, diterpanes are the dominant constituents of the alkane fraction. Polycyclic alkanes of the triterpane type are important constituents of alkane fractions. The occurrence of ββ- and αβ-type hopanes from C27 to C31, but without C28, is typical for the Soko Banja coals. The major and trace elements in the coal were analysed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In comparison with world lignites, using the geometric mean value, the coal from the Soko Banja Basin has a high content of strontium (306.953 mg/kg). Higher values than the world lignites were obtained for Mo (3.614 mg/kg), Ni (8.119 mg/kg), Se (0.884 mg/kg), U (2.642 mg/kg) and W (0.148 mg/kg). Correlation analysis shows inorganic affinity for almost all the major and trace elements, except for S, which has an organic affinity.  相似文献

Hydrocarbon distributions and stable isotope ratios of carbonates (δ13Ccar, δ18Ocar), kerogen (δ13Cker), extractable organic matter (δ13CEOM) and individual hydrocarbons of Liassic black shale samples from a prograde metamorphic sequence in the Swiss Alps were used to identify the major organic reactions with increasing metamorphic grade. The studied samples range from the diagenetic zone (<100°C) to amphibolite facies (∼550°C). The samples within the diagenetic zones (<100 and 150°C) are characterized by the dominance of C<20n-alkanes, suggesting an origin related with marine and/or bacterial inputs. The metamorphic samples (200 to 550°C) have distributions significantly dominated by C12 and C13n-alkanes, C14, C16 and C18n-alkylcyclopentanes and to a lesser extend C15, C17 and C21n-alkylcyclohexanes. The progressive 13C-enrichment (up to 3.9‰) with metamorphism of the C>17n-alkanes suggests the occurrence of cracking reactions of high molecular weight compounds. The isotopically heavier (up to 5.6) C<17n-alkanes in metamorphic samples are likely originated by thermal degradation of long-chain homologous with preferential release of isotopically light C1 and C2 radicals. The dominance of specific even C-number n-alkylcyclopentanes suggests an origin related to direct cyclization mechanism (without decarboxylation step) of algal or bacterial fatty acids occurring in reducing aqueous metamorphic fluid conditions. The regular increase of the concentrations of n-alkylcycloalkanes vs. C>13n-alkanes with metamorphism suggests progressive thermal release of kerogen-linked fatty acid precursors and degradation of n-alkanes. Changes of the steroid and terpenoid distributions are clearly related to increasing metamorphic temperatures. The absence of 18α(H)-22,29,30-trisnorneohopane (Ts), the occurrence of 17β(H)-trisnorhopane, 17β(H), 21α(H)-hopanes in the C29 to C31 range and 5α(H),14α(H),17α(H)-20R C27, C29 steranes in the low diagenetic samples (<100°C) are characteristic of immature bitumens. The higher thermal stress within the upper diagenetic zone (150°C) is marked by the presence of Ts, the disappearance of 17β(H)-trisnorhopane and thermodynamic equilibrium of the 22S/(22S + 22R) homohopane ratios. The increase of the ααα-sterane 20S/(20S + 20R) and 20R ββ/(ββ + αα) ratios (from 0.0 to 0.55 and from 0.0 to 0.40, respectively) in the upper diagenetic zone indicates the occurrence of isomerization reactions already at <150°C. However, the isomerization at C-20 (R → S) reaches thermodynamic equilibrium values already at the upper diagenesis (∼150°C) whereas the epimerisation at C-14 and C-17 (αα → ββ) arrives to constant values in the lower anchizone (∼200°C). The ratios Ts vs. 17α(H)-22,29,30-trisnorneohopane [(Ts/(Ts + Tm)] and 18α(H)-30-norneohopane (C29Ts) vs. 17α(H),21β(H)-30-norhopane [C29Ts/(C29Ts + C29)] increase until the medium anchizone (200 to 250°C) from 0.0 to 0.96 and from 0.0 to 0.44, respectively. An opposite trend towards lower values is observed in the higher metamorphic samples. The occurrence of specific hydrocarbons (e.g., n-alkylcyclopentanes, cadalene, hydrogenated aromatic compounds) in metamorphic samples points to kerogen degradation reactions most probably occurring in the presence of water and under reducing conditions. The changes of hydrocarbon distributions and carbon isotopic compositions of n-alkanes related to metamorphism suggest that the organic geochemistry may help to evaluate the lowest grades of prograde metamorphism.  相似文献

Two Chinese immature oil shales from the continental deposits of kerogen type I and II have been thermally treated combined with the technique of supercritical fluid extraction at 630–650 K and 15–25 MPa in a semi-continuous laboratory scale apparatus. Toluence is selected as the solvent. Up to 70–80% of the kerogen matrix can be converted to a thermal bitumen and extracted simultaneously. The chemical structural parameters from the NMR, IR, XRD, ESR and EA analyses of the kerogen and the thermal bitumen show striking resemblance in nature. It implies that the thermal bitumen is primarily a depolymerized product of the kerogen. Based on the GC/MS spectra of the aliphatic eluate of the thermal bitumen, the predominance of the odd/even ratio of the alkanes and the epimeric ratios, such as 20S(20S + 20R) of C-29 steranes and 22S/(22S + 22R) of C-32 terpanes, show that the maturity of the thermal bitumen from these oil shales is comparable to that of commercial immature oils from East China. The thermal bitumen is thought to be an intermediate product of the thermal degradation of kerogen.Since the thermal bitumen is mainly composed of asphaltenes and resins, it has a structure of gel. The gel-state bitumen may turn to sol-state readily due to its low aromaticity and polarity, or due to selective adsorption of asphaltenes by clay minerals. Then the migration potential of the bitumen is enhanced.Consequently, under favorable geological conditions, the thermal depolymerization of kerogen seems to be a probable mechanism to explain the formation of immature oils.
