The northeastern Gulf of Mexico contains some of the most diverse and productive marine habitat in the United States. Much of this habitat, located on the shelf edge in depths of 50 to 120 m, supports spawning for many economically important species, including groupers. Here, we couple acoustic surveys with georeferenced videography to describe the primary spatial and geologic features of spawning aggregation sites for four economically important species: gag (Mycteroperca microlepis), scamp (M. phenax), red grouper (Epinephelus morio), and red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), with notes on fish distribution and abundance and spawning activities. We provide information on movement patterns of reef fish determined using acoustic telemetry. Finally, we discuss the possible coupling of geomorphology with hydrographic features to influence the overall productivity of the region and the importance of spatial fishery management in sustaining that productivity.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of the euphausiids Thysanoessa raschi and Thysanoessa inermis in the shelf waters of the southeastern Bering Sea were investigated during spring and summer of 1980 and 1981. Experiments were conducted during the study to describe the reproduction, growth and development of these species. T. inermis was the dominant euphausiid species observed over the outer shelf region; it began spawning in early April while T. raschi dominated the euphausiids over the middle shelf and began spawning in mid or late May. The seasonal progression in spawning followed the seasonal development of temperature; however, spawning did not begin earlier in 1981 which was a warmer year than 1980. Average egg production of T . raschi ranged from 3.4% to 3.8% dry body weight of the female per day during the first three days after capture. Secondary production estimates for T . raschi females ranged from 4.2% to 5.2% dry body weight per day in 1980 and 5.9% to 6.0% dry body weight per day in 1981. A sharp decline in the abundance of adolescent and adult euphausiids over the middle shelf during the spring bloom period when food appeared to be abundant suggests that predation by diving birds, pollack. Tanner crabs, whales and seals effectively controls the euphausiid population.  相似文献

This contribution reports the analysis of a sample of landlocked arctic charr collected with gillnets in Svartvatnet, Svalbard, 1964. This is the first scientific sample from a landlocked charr population from Svalbard. We found a very prominent modal group of large, old and sexually adult fish of both sexes. Their length ranged from 15 to 62 cm, but 92% of the fish were longer than 40 cm and 62% of them fell in the 45 to 54 cm interval. The age range was 7 to 31 years, but 93% were 14 years or older and represented 18 year-classes. The length-at-age of the charr seemed to increase steadily until they reached the size and age of the modal group. The growth rate decreased sharply after that. The mortality rates within the age span of the modal group seemed to be low. The ages at first spawning for most of the charr in the sample were between 7 and 9 years and spawning cycles of two years were indicated.  相似文献

We studied whether incorporation of terms for environmental factors (temperature, herring and 0-group cod) into the stock recruitment functions for the Barents Sea capelin ( Mallotus villosus ) would increase the ability to predict recruitment. We also investigated the effects of alternative estimates of the capelin spawning stock (SSB) and juvenile herring on model predictability. By using nonlinear regression, the modified Beverton–Holt and Ricker stock recruitment models were fitted to time series of capelin spawning stock, capelin recruitment, juvenile herring, 0-group cod and temperature from 1973 to 2000. The modified Beverton–Holt model with a term for juvenile herring fit capelin recruitment data well. Inclusion of terms for temperature and 0-group cod abundance did not significantly improve the model fit. The best model predicts an almost proportional relationship between the spawning stock and the capelin recruitment when the abundance of juvenile herring is high.  相似文献

We sampled living and subfossil phantom midge (Diptera: Chaoboridae) larvae from surface sediments of 21 small lakes in Southern Sweden to examine the influence of fish and selected abiotic variables on the abundance and species composition of chaoborid assemblages. We expected total Chaoborus abundance to be inversely correlated with fish abundance and Chaoborus species most sensitive to fish predation to be found only in fishless lakes. We aimed to use the observed relationships to develop models to reconstruct past fish abundances from chaoborid remains and the abiotic environment. C. flavicans occurred in almost every lake, whereas subfossil C. obscuripes were found in the surface sediments of only one fishless lake. The density of living C. flavicans larvae correlated negatively with fish abundance, lake order and size. The concentration of C. flavicans subfossils was negatively associated with pH, lake size, water transparency and fish abundance. Regression models that included lake morphometry and landscape position as additional predictors of fish abundance performed better than models that used only Chaoborus predictors. The explained variance in fish abundance varied from 52 to 86%. Leave-one-out cross-validation indicated moderate performance of the two best models. These models explained 51 and 56% of the observed untransformed fish density and biomass, respectively. In addition, all Chaoborus models were unbiased in closely following the 1:1 reference line in plots of observed versus predicted values. These results are a promising step in developing midge-based paleolimnological reconstructions of past fish abundance, and the approach might be improved by including chironomid remains in the models.  相似文献

The palaeoecological potential of fish scales was assessed by comparing contemporary population data with scale remains obtained from littoral (n = 10) and open water (n = 10) surface sediment samples in two English shallow lakes, Selbrigg Pond and Cockshoot Broad. Scales and/or scale fragments were present, in low numbers (<20 per 100 cm3 wet sediment) in 34 of 40 sediment samples. In accordance with fish population data, higher densities of scale remains were found in Selbrigg compared to Cockshoot, and in littoral compared to open water samples. Taxonomic difficulties, exacerbated by scale fragmentation, made it impossible to assign the majority of remains to individual species. Most remains could, however, be placed into one of two groups: (i) percids – represented by both scales and scale fragments; and (ii) cyprinids – largely represented by scale fragments. To allow comparison of fish population and sedimentary scale data, both were converted to percentages of the aggregate percid–cyprinid total. Whole scales recovered were almost exclusively percid (45 of 48), thus bore little resemblance to the contemporary fish data. Nevertheless, percentages of scale fragments (Selbrigg: 34 and 66%; Cockshoot: 13 and 87% percid and cyprinid, respectively) and of whole scales and fragments combined (Selbrigg: 54 and 46%; Cockshoot: 46 and 54% percid and cyprinid, respectively) reflected the presence of the numerically dominant fish groups and the broad inter-site differences in their relative abundance (Selbrigg: 36 and 64%; Cockshoot: 10 and 90% percid and cyprinid, respectively). A running mean of scales per sediment volume indicated that some 400 cm3 of sediment was required to accurately characterise the remains present. This study suggests that, with the appropriate methodological considerations (e.g., collection of large sediment samples), fish scale remains may be used to determine the past presence–absence and relative abundance of percid and cyprinid species. As such, this technique may be a valuable supplementary tool for establishing longer-term changes in the fish communities of shallow lakes.  相似文献

Krill from the Barents Sea were studied on six cruises from 1985 to 1989. Thysanoessa inermis and T. longicaudata were the dominant species, while T. raschii and Meganyctiphanes norvegica were rarer in the studied areas. The two dominant species T. inermis and T. longicaudata are mainly found in the Atlantic. Water and they do not to a large extent penetrate into Arctic water masses in the northern Barents Sea. M. norvegica is a more strict boreal species that does not occur as extensively in the Barents Sea as do the Thysanoessa species. The mean population abundance ranged from 1 to 61 individuals m−2 for T. inermis and from 2 to 52 ind. M−2 for T. longicaudata . The mean dry weight biomass of these two species ranged from 14 to 616 and from 19 to 105 mg−2. Length frequency distributions indicate a life span of just over two years for T. inermis and T. longicaudata . Growth took place from about April to autumn with no apparent growth during winter. Maturation and spawning seem to occur after two years for T. inermis and one year for T. longicaudata . Main spawning occurred from May to June coinciding with the spring phytoplankton bloom. Captive spawners of T. inermis (total length 17-22 mm) shed 30-110 eggs per female in a single batch.  相似文献

This paper presents a hydrodynamic-based investigation of constructed wetland suitability for fish habitat. A constructed wetland adjacent to river is manoeuvred to imitate riparian fish habitat by means of computer modelling. Flow-velocity conditions, water depths and effects of macrophytes to resistance of flow in constructed wetland are modelled and steered towards creating a favourable ground for natural substrate spawning of native fish species. The model suggests combination of two zones, which are a macrophyte zone for typical functions of a wetland and an open water zone with gravel bed to support fish reproductive cycles.  相似文献

A simple model for estimating streamflow competence is used to assess the impact of water diversion on the retention of spawning gravels in Newhalem Creek, a small watershed in the Cascade Mountains. Surveyed stream cross sections and discharge estimates are employed to characterize the routine tractive force conditions of the streambed. A conservative estimation procedure results in tractive force values of 120–390 Nm?2for one-year, five-year, and 10-year recurrence interval events. Theoretical and empirical estimates of critical tractive force for particle sizes suggest a routine competence of 100–450 mm diameter for these flows. Substantial accumulations of bed material in the range of 1–100 mm diameter is desirable for anadromous fish spawning redds. As a result, Newhalem Creek is naturally poor habitat for spawning. Steep channel gradients and a “flashy” hydrograph conspire to routinely flush the main channel of spawning-size substrate. In this instance, the modest water diversion is immaterial to the maintenance of spawning habitat.  相似文献

We examine the morphology and dynamics features of the river channels within the basin of the lower reaches of the Amur river on spawning grounds. We report evidence that the spawning grounds tend to occur at definite elements of the river channel as well as data on particle-size composition of alluvial deposits in autumn chum salmon (keta) spawning stretches. Factors having a negative influence on the preservation of spawning grounds have been identified.  相似文献

While the importance of river channel morphology to salmon spawning habitat is increasingly recognized, quantitative measures of the relationships between channel morphology and habitat use are lacking. Such quantitative measures are necessary as management and regulatory agencies within the Pacific Northwest region of the USA, and elsewhere, seek to quantify potential spawning habitat and develop recovery goals for declining salmon populations. The objective of this study was to determine if fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) spawning areas in the Snake River, Idaho, USA, were correlated with specific bedform types at the pool–riffle scale. A bedform differencing technique was used to objectively quantify the longitudinal riverbed profile into four distinct pool–riffle units that were independent of discharge. The vertical location of thalweg points within these units was quantified with a riffle proximity index. Chinook salmon spawning areas were mapped and correlated with the pool–riffle units through the use of cross-tabulation tables. The results indicate that 84% of fall Chinook salmon spawning areas were correlated with riffles (χ2 = 57.5, df = 3, p < 0.001), with 53% of those areas located on the upstream side of riffle crests. The majority of Snake River fall Chinook salmon spawning occurred at elevations greater than 80% of the difference in elevation between the nearest riffle crest and pool bottom. The analyses of bedform morphology will assist regional fish managers in quantifying existing and potential fall Chinook salmon spawning habitat, and will provide a quantitative framework for evaluating general ecological implications of channel morphology in large gravel-bed rivers.  相似文献

Fish introduction and eutrophication are important disturbances to aquatic ecosystems, especially to oligotrophic plateau lakes that are generally considered to be very vulnerable ecosystems. Planktivorous fish Neosalanx taihuensis were introduced to Lake Fuxian, an oligotrophic (TP 17 μg/l) deep (average depth 89.7 m) plateau lake in southwest China, in the middle of the 1980s. After the introduction, N. taihuensis became the dominant fish species, and the total fish yield increased about threefold. Although the lake is still oligotrophic, the trophic state of Lake Fuxian has started to shift with increasing nutrient supply (eutrophication) due to an increase in human activities in the drainage basin. This study investigated the effects of N. taihuensis introduction and eutrophication on the cladoceran community of Lake Fuxian by examining changes in cladoceran assemblages and abundance, as well as the morphological features of Bosmina microfossils in the lake sediment. Absolute abundance of total Bosmina increased substantially after the middle of the 1980s. In addition, dominance of Bosmina with straight antennules was replaced by Bosmina with hooked antennules. The morphological variables (length of carapace, antennule and mucro) of Bosmina all decreased when planktivorous fish N. taihuensis achieved relatively large numbers. Eutrophication was the most important process determining cladoceran abundance, while fish introduction played an important role in structuring the cladoceran community in this oligotrophic, deep plateau lake.  相似文献

本文依据 1 989/1 990和 1 990 /1 991夏季 ,“极地”号考察船在普里兹湾邻近海域 (南大洋的印度洋区 )的拖网样品 ,对大磷虾的性腺发育和生殖群体的年龄结构等 ,进行了分析研究。大磷虾的生殖开始于 1月 ,一直持续到 3月。高峰期出现在 2月中旬 ,比大西洋区相比迟了一个月。生殖群体主要包括两个年龄组 ,即 3 + 龄和 4+ 龄。换句话说 ,绝大部分个体是三年性成熟 ,一生可生殖两次 ,不排除少数个体两年性成熟 ,或第三次性成熟的可能 ,但比例非常小。在 5 91 6尾能区分性别的个体中 ,雄性个体只占 3 4 .1 %。雄性比随体长的增加而降低。体长大于 5 0 mm的个体中雄性仅占 2 2 .9%。  相似文献

Sub-fossils of Cladocera and Foraminifera were used to reconstruct changes since 1870 in the trophic dynamics of two brackish lakes, Glombak and Han Vejle, located in the Vejlerne nature reserve, Denmark, a site of international conservation importance. After creation of the lakes in the mid-1870s following land reclamation, the two lakes have developed quite differently; today Glombak is turbid, while Han Vejle is clear. In both lakes, stratigraphic changes in the assemblages of foraminifers and cladocerans indicate an abrupt shift from marine to brackish conditions at the end of the 19th century, coinciding with land reclamation. However, the composition of the fossil invertebrate assemblages in the 20th century implies differences in the exposure to salinity, in fish predation and in habitat diversity. In Glombak, the cladoceran record suggests relatively saline conditions in the first quarter of the last century and high macrophyte abundance followed by lower salinities and subsequently a major decrease in macrophyte abundance and an increase in fish predation during the past ca. 40 years. By contrast, in Han Vejle low salinity, high abundance of macrophytes and only minor changes in fish predation seem to have prevailed throughout most of the 20th century. The results are consistent with recent contemporary data, the few historical records, as well as with trends in the records of diatoms and macrofossils. This study highlights the potential of using crustacean remains as indicators of long-term changes in the trophic dynamics of brackish lakes.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the socioeconomic determinants of consumption of wild fish among the Kichwa and Shuar indigenous peoples in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The results of a random-effect linear model show that the consumption of wild fish is higher for households with younger heads that do not have off-farm work and reside far from urban centers, in communities with low population densities. Although various actors promoting aquaculture in the region often claim that it helps to relieve the pressure on wild fish stocks, no statistically significant effect of the consumption of cultivated fish on the consumption of wild fish could be shown. Thus, our analysis suggests that public policies and development interventions which increase access to off-farm employment can both improve local livelihoods and conserve biodiversity, but that the same affirmation cannot be made for the promotion of aquaculture.  相似文献

Loch Ruthven holds the largest British population of the rare water-bird Podiceps auritus, the Slavonian or horned grebe. The breeding success of this bird has fluctuated annually since records began in 1970. To investigate whether these trends are linked to the abundance of chironomid midges, which are an important food-source for the grebe chicks, we analysed a sediment core from the lake, which was sliced at 2.5-mm intervals and provided near-annual sampling resolution. We also analysed diatoms and algal pigments in the lake sediments and inferred changes in total phosphorus from the diatom assemblage to determine whether changes in lake productivity have influenced the abundance of chironomids. Trends in grebe productivity, chironomid abundance and algal assemblages were compared against climate data to determine whether climate, specifically, the North Atlantic Oscillation, was the ultimate driver of the trends we recorded. Our results show that grebe breeding success is positively correlated with chironomid abundance and chironomid abundance is positively correlated with diatom-inferred total phosphorus. Lake productivity and chironomid abundance began to rise early in the twentieth century and continued to rise on a steeper trajectory from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Since the mid-1960s, chironomid abundance began to fluctuate erratically and since 1970 was in phase with grebe productivity, with the grebe trends most plausibly lagging by 1 year. These trends appear to correlate with inter-annual fluctuations in diatom-inferred total phosphorus. No correlation was found between grebe productivity or chironomid abundance and climate variables, suggesting that the size of the chironomid population and breeding success of Podiceps auritus at Loch Ruthven is resource-linked.  相似文献

This article offers a case study of the process involved in the development of a national network of marine reserves to protect multispecies reef fish spawning aggregation sites. There are two guiding principles that engendered success for this unprecedented conservation event. First was the broad participation of a diverse group of stakeholders, particularly the local fishermen providing their traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). The second involved the search for patterns in geomorphology and its association to the biology of exploited species. Using diverse and patchy sets of data including published peer-reviewed papers, gray literature reports from Belize and other Caribbean nations, remotely sensed images, coarse bathymetric maps, new bathymetric data collected with a single-beam sonar, and reports of fishermen from various parts of the country, we developed a conceptual understanding summarized by the multispecies promontory hypothesis, which suggests a common geomorphology of spawning sites for most large and commercially important reef fish species. An explicit test of the hypothesis is presently underway but is not the only focus of this article. This article also addresses the participatory process of geographic discovery and the role of the process in building consensus around a functional biophysical hypothesis, its test, and the resulting conservation action. A holistic, eclectic, inclusive geographic approach is offered as a successful example.  相似文献

Chaoborid and chironomid (Diptera) fossils were examined in sediment cores form nine Ontario Precambrian Shield lakes that were fishless in 1979. An abundance of Chaoborus americamus (intolerant of predation by fish) throughout cores from four lakes indicated that they were fishless historically. Occurrence of Chaoborus punctipennis and C. flavicans and absence of C. americanus in cores, except near the surface in two cases, indicated that four other lakes were inhabited by fish historically. One of these was probably periodically fishless as suggested by fluctuations among these Chaoborus species. The ninth lake was not suitable for Chaoborus; only one specimen of C. trivittatus was found in this core. Chironomid fossil associations were substantially different in historically fishless and inhabited lakes. Fishless lakes had chironomids typical of eutrophic conditions indicating that seasonal oxygen depletion likely was inimical to fish. Chironomid associations of oligotrophic waters occurred in lakes historically inhabited by fish. Both good water quality and accessibility were required for long-term habitation by fish. Partial recovery of alkalinity and rise in pH were accompanied by substantial re-invasion by fish in two lakes which had been inhabited historically by fish. Diptera associations provide valuable information on the historical suitability of lakes for fish and the presence/absence of fish in regions where acidification of surface waters has occurred.  相似文献

根据2002年及2006年南大洋普里兹湾浮游动物和环境调查资料,对普里兹湾磷虾幼体及被囊类纽鳃樽的分布和丰度进行了初步研究。结果表明,陆架以北深海水域(水深>1000 m)磷虾幼体主要由长臂樱磷虾Thysanoessa macrura和大磷虾Euphausia superba组成,其中长臂樱磷虾幼体的分布范围更广、丰度更高。2006年与2002年相比海冰回退时间早,测区海水的平均温度和叶绿素a浓度较高,大磷虾及长臂樱磷虾幼体的丰度相对更大,成熟度更高。近岸区域磷虾幼体主要由晶磷虾Euphausia crystallorophias组成,在2002年近岸冰情严重时丰度较小,仅为95.6尾/1000 m3,2006年近岸出现冰间湖时,晶磷虾幼体丰度高达43966.6尾/1000 m3,主要以无节幼体及原蚤状幼体CI期为主。测区纽鳃樽Salpa thompsoni丰度很低,2002年仅在最北部1个站位出现,密度为10个/1000 m3,2006年在陆坡及陆架坡折3个站位出现,平均丰度为146.7个/1000 m3。海冰消融时间、冰间湖、饵料浓度等环境因子对普里兹湾磷虾幼体及纽鳃樽的分布和丰度产生重要影响。  相似文献

The segmenting of gravel-bed rivers flowing through mountain valleys into a number of discrete ‘sedimentary links’, each characterized by downstream fining of alluvium, is a relatively recent concept which offers promise to model the large-scale spatial organisation of many types of aquatic habitat (reproductive, feeding, refuge, etc), strongly dependent on dominant bed sediment calibre. Although, so far, the ecological application of the concept has mainly focused on benthic invertebrates, here we illustrate its application to fish (Atlantic salmon; Salmo salar). Moreover, the link concept has also been primarily applied to alpine river environments where link formation is triggered by point sources (mainly tributaries) supplying coarser sediment. However, somewhat lower relief, mountain valley landscapes of North Eastern Canada are often structured into sedimentary links triggered by non-point, ‘supply zones’ of coarse sediments, originating in bedrock canyon reaches or valley bottom deposits of glacial drift. Here, we propose an adaptation and extension of the original, sedimentary link concept to such landscapes and test its utility along one such system, the Ste Marguerite River (SMR), a salmon river draining the Canadian Shield in the Saguenay region of Québec. We first discuss a simple field and office based method of link delineation. Then we discuss potential sources of minor, sublink scale grain size variability and their effects on how sedimentary links are defined. Lastly, we demonstrate the usefulness of the link structure to model the distribution of Atlantic salmon spawning habitat (a habitat that depends critically on bed texture). Our results indicate that a revised sedimentary link typology is needed to describe longitudinal grain size patterns where non-point, valley-segment scale sources of coarse sediment are important and that consideration of the research purpose and scale is important in defining meaningful link units. We also show that salmon spawning zones can be directly predicted from the link structure: along the SMR, spawning activity is apportioned within each of the discrete links, in those sub-zones where surface sediment size and sand content are optimal for reproduction.  相似文献
