Plasma of electric arc discharges between composite Cu–W, Cu–Mo and Cu–Cr electrodes in argon flow and their spectra were studied by optical emission spectroscopy. Since values of oscillator strengths for W I, Mo I and Cr I presented in various sources are significantly different, selection of spectroscopic data for these elements (particularly oscillator strength) was expected to be useful for plasma diagnostics. The Boltzmann plot method was used as a tool for the selection of appropriate spectral lines and their spectroscopic data. The main result of the paper is W I, Mo I and Cr I spectral lines and spectroscopic data recommended for diagnostics of plasma with such metal impurities.  相似文献

This memoir is a summary of my early childhood, education, and research career at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC. I describe my early interest in astronomy and how I wound up working in the fields of solar physics and X-ray-UV spectroscopy of high temperature plasmas. I describe some of my home life and other interests, my education at the University of Pittsburgh, and the various projects and management activities that I have been fortunate to work on at NRL. I have been blessed with being able to work at a first-class research laboratory populated by outstanding scientists. I am particularly blessed to have worked with my many friends and colleagues in the NRL Space Science Division. Perhaps I am most blessed by having had wonderful parents that gave me the interests I have in life and the passion to pursue them, and an outstanding wife that has been my partner through good and bad times for over 50 years. I am now retired but for three years I was a participant in the NRL Voluntary Emeritus Program (VEP). However, this memoir is a personal account, and not work done as a VEP.

The formation of Na I lines in X-ray illuminated atmospheres is investigated by abandoning the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). Calculations are performed on the basis of a 21-level Na I model atom for the LTE model atmospheres of irradiated F-G stars obtained with allowance for a reflection effect in the first approximation. The state of extreme “overrecombination” is shown to exist for the populations of all Na I levels in the case of external illumination. Absorption features in the profiles of “cool” and “normal” Na I lines have been found to be enhanced compared to the LTE approximation. Effects of the angle of incidence and intensity of the external radiation on the formation of level populations and line profiles when abandoning LTE are analyzed. The existence of overrecombination for Na I is explained by the small X-ray heating function and the large optical cooling function. Na I level populations are shown to depend weakly on the presence of “overionization” for Na II in the atmospheres of irradiated stars.  相似文献

Abstract— We review the development of the I‐Xe technique and how its data are interpreted, and specify the best current practices. Individual mineral phases or components can yield interpretable trends in initial 129I/127I ratio, whereas whole‐rock I‐Xe ages are often hard to interpret because of the diversity of host phases, many of which are secondary. Varying standardizations in early work require caution; only samples calibrated against Shallowater enstatite or Bjurböle can contribute reliably to the emerging I‐Xe chronology of the early solar system. Although sparse, data for which I‐Xe and Mn‐Cr can be compared suggest that the two systems are concordant among ordinary chondrite samples. We derive a new age for the closure of the Shallowater enstatite standard of 4563.3 ± 0.4 Myr from the relationship between the I‐Xe and Pb‐Pb systems. This yields absolute I‐Xe ages and allows data from this and other systems to be tested by attempting to construct a common chronology of events in the early solar system. Absolute I‐Xe dates for aqueous and igneous processes are consistent with other systems. Consideration of the I‐Xe host phases in CAIs and dark inclusions demonstrates that here the chronometer records aqueous alteration of pre‐existing material. The ranges of chondrule ages deduced from the Al‐Mg and I‐Xe systems in Semarkona (LL3.0) and Chainpur (LL3.4) are consistent. Chainpur I‐Xe data exhibit a greater range of ages than Semarkona, possibly reflecting a greater degree of parent body processing. However individual chondrules show little or no evidence of such processing. Determining the host phase(s) responsible for high temperature correlations may resolve the issue.  相似文献

Results of a spectral survey of molecular cores NGC 6334I and NGC 6334I(N) in a number of spectral intervals with widths of about 1000 MHz are presented. Observations were carried out with the SEST radiotelescope. Number of the intervals for NGC 6334I was 11. 209 spectral features were detected towards molecular core NGC 6334I, out of which 203 features were assigned to 25 species.Number of the intervals for NGC 6334I(N) was 6. They represent a subset of the intervals used for the NGC 6334I. The spectrum of NGC 6334I(N) appears to be considerably more poor with the features: 63 features were detected, out of which 55 were assigned to 13 species.Catalogues of assigned features for both sources are presented. They contain the notation of corresponding molecular transition, frequency, and the following observational data: integrated intensity, Vlsr velocity, FWHM and antenna temperature.  相似文献

We have performed statistical equilibrium calculations for Ca I–Ca II, Ti I–Ti II, and Fe I–Fe II by taking into account the nonequilibrium line formation conditions (the non-LTE approach) in model atmospheres of giant stars with effective temperatures 4000 K ≤ T eff ≤ 5000 K and metal abundances ?4 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0. The dependence of departures from LTE on atmospheric parameters has been analyzed. We present the non-LTE abundance corrections for 28 Ca I lines, 42 Ti I lines, 54 Ti II lines, and 262 Fe I lines and a three-dimensional interpolation code to obtain the non-LTE correction online for an individual line and specified atmospheric parameters.  相似文献

We present deep, multi-Very Large Array configuration radio images for a set of 18 quasars, having redshifts between 0.36 and 2.5, from the 7C quasar survey. Approximately one quarter of these quasars have Fanaroff–Riley type I (FR I) type twin-jet structures and the remainder are a broad range of wide angle tail, fat double, classical double, core-jet and hybrid sources. These images demonstrate that FR I quasars are prevalent in the Universe, rather than non-existent as had been suggested in the literature prior to the serendipitous discovery of the first FR I quasar a few years ago, the optically powerful 'radio-quiet' quasar E 1821+643.
Some of the FR I quasars have radio luminosities exceeding the traditional FR I/FR II break luminosity; however, we find no evidence for FR II quasars with luminosities significantly below the break. We consider whether the existence of such high-luminosity FR I structures is due to the increasingly inhomogeneous environments in the higher redshift Universe.  相似文献

The I − Z colour has recently been shown to be a good temperature indicator for M dwarfs. We present the first IZ photometry of a small sample of L dwarfs ranging in spectral type from L0.5V to L6.0V. We find that the I − Z colour is not a good temperature indicator for objects between L1V and L5V, such objects having colours that overlap with mid M dwarfs. We attribute this to the reduction in the strength of the TiO and VO bands in the L dwarfs, which are the dominant opacity source in the I band for late M dwarfs. Beyond L5V, I − Z appears to be a reasonable indicator. This has important implications for the planning of optical surveys for cool objects in clusters and the field. For example, I − Z will cease to be a good method of identifying brown dwarfs in the Pleiades below around 0.04 M, and at around 0.075 M in the Hyades and Praesepe.  相似文献

I apply spectral and auto-correlation analyses to the monthly Wolf number fluctuations for 22 solar cycles and to the group sunspot number fluctuations for 18 solar cycles and find the existence of an 11-month quasi-periodicity in these data. Its strength correlates very well (ρ ⑈ 0.8) with the variance of fluctuations. Moreover, for both Wolf and group sunspot indexes I divide a stationary version of fluctuation time series into two parts: those from periods of low and high solar activity. I find statistically significant quasi-periodicity (9 months) in both high- and low-activity data sets. I also find the quasi-period of about 15 months in the time series of high-activity periods.  相似文献

I review the role of planetary migration on the formation process of terrestrial planets. I first show a simple estimation for growth timescale of solid proto-planets and review a linear theory of disk-planet gravitational interaction to estimate the migration rate of proto-planets in a gas disk, and then discuss the difficulty of the formation of terrestrial planets in terms of comparison between migration timescale and growth timescale. Next I show recent studies which suggest possible mechanisms to solve the problem. I briefly discuss the formation process of Mercury in the context of terrestrial-planet formation.  相似文献

Abstract— I‐Xe analyses were carried out for chondrules and refractory inclusions from the two CV3 carbonaceous chondrites Mokoia and Vigarano (representing the oxidized and reduced subgroups, respectively). Although some degree of disturbance to the I‐Xe system is evident in all of the samples, evidence is preserved of aqueous alteration of CAIs in Mokoia 1 Myr later than the I‐Xe age of the Shallowater standard and of the alteration of a chondrule (V3) from Vigarano ~0.7 Myr later than Shallowater. Other chondrules in Mokoia and Vigarano experienced disturbance of the I‐Xe system millions of years later and, in the case of one Vigarano chondrule (VS1), complete resetting of the I‐Xe system after decay of essentially all 129I, corresponding to an age more than 80 Myr after Shallowater. Our interpretation is that accretion and processing to form the Mokoia and Vigarano parent bodies must have continued for at least 4 Myr and 80 Myr, respectively. The late age of a chondrule that shows no evidence for any aqueous alteration or significant thermal processing after its formation leads us to postulate the existence of an energetic chondrule‐forming mechanism at a time when nebular processes are not expected to be important.  相似文献

We have compared the results of a number of published class I methanol maser surveys with the catalogue of high-mass outflow candidates identified from the Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire survey (known as extended green objects or EGOs). We find class I methanol masers associated with approximately two-thirds of EGOs. Although the association between outflows and class I methanol masers has long been postulated on the basis of detailed studies of a small number of sources, this result demonstrates the relationship for the first time on a statistical basis. Despite the publication of a number of searches for class I methanol masers, a close physical association with another astrophysical object which could be targeted for the search is still lacking. The close association between class I methanol masers and EGOs therefore provides a large catalogue of candidate sources, most of which have not previously been searched for class I methanol masers. Interstellar masers and outflows have both been proposed to trace an evolutionary sequence for high-mass star formation, therefore a better understanding of the relationship between class I methanol masers and outflow offers the potential for comparison and amalgamation of these two evolutionary sequences.  相似文献

The possible relation between type I noise active regions and the polarity distribution of the interplanetary magnetic field is examined for the period from 13 March to 21 August, 1968 (Solar Rotation Numbers 1842–1847) by using data from ground-based and satellite observations. In general four type I radio regions appeared during each solar rotation period except for Rotation No. 1842. The number of type I regions is the same as the number of sector boundaries. This result suggests that the configuration of the photospheric magnetic field extending into the interplanetary space may be related to the origin of the type I radio regions. Statistically the passage of the sector boundaries is delayed by approximately 5 days after the central meridian passage of the type I noise regions on the solar disk.The position of the source of the sector boundaries and its relation to the type I radio regions are investigated by taking into account the mean bulk velocity of solar winds as observed by space probes. A model of the large-scale structure of type I radio regions and their relation to the sector structure of the magnetic field as observed in the interplanetary space is briefly discussed.NASA Research Associate at the University of Maryland.  相似文献

We examine the H I kinematics of the “Bluedisk” ensemble of 48 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and observed in H I with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The sample consists of 25 galaxies with a high H I mass fraction and a comparatively large control sample comprising 23 galaxies of comparable stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, redshift, and inclination. By studying the H I velocity fields of these galaxies, we investigate whether there are signatures of ongoing gas accretion: i.e. global asymmetries and indications for warping and kinematical lopsidedness. We find no enhanced kinematical asymmetries between the H I‐rich sample and the control sample galaxies, indicating no significant difference in kinematical signatures such as warping and lopsidedness. Furthermore, we find no difference in position angle and systemic velocity offset with respect to the optical between both sub‐samples. We therefore do not find compelling evidence for enhanced global asymmetry of the H I‐excess galaxies ensemble properties in comparison to the control sample galaxies. In this short contribution I want to discuss one particular candidate for the Dark Matter (DM) in the Universe, viz., the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). I discuss, very briefly, the motivation for Supersymmetry as well as the LSP as DM candidate. Then I summarise the current accelerator bounds on its mass and couplings and end by pointing out the implications of these limits for the experiments which search ‘directly’ for the DM.  相似文献
