Seasonal variation in the standing crop of the seagrassSyringodium filiforme and its associated macrophytes was studied in a northern basin of the Indian River, a large mesohaline lagoon in central Florida, near the northern distributional limit ofS. filiforme. The minimum standing crop occurred from February through April and the maximum in September. Two other seagrasses,Halodule wrightii andHalophila engelmannii, together with a drift algal community, occurred in the study quadrat, but were not major components of the macrophytic system. The formation of sizeable sandy patches within Indian River seagrass beds is partially due to the burrowing activities ofLimulus polyphemus. Thermal stresses associated with the northern geographicalS. filiforme range may contribute to this phenomenon by restricting annual production, hence limiting patch regrowth.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of 10 years of water quality monitoring in the Indian River Lagoon Florida, with special emphasis on the relationships between trends in climatic conditions and the distribution, composition, and abundance of the phytoplankton community. The Indian River Lagoon, which spans 220 km of Florida’s east coast, is a region of particular concern because of the rapid rate of human development throughout the region and the hydrologically restricted character of the lagoon, which heightens the potential for algal bloom. Water sampling was carried out on a monthly to twice-monthly basis at six sites located in the northern and central lagoon. The 10-year study included both extended periods of below and above average rainfall. A number of ecologically distinct regions exist within the lagoon, which differ considerably in water exchange properties and watershed inputs. The northern lagoon is characterized by longer water residence times, lower phosphorus concentrations, higher nitrogen concentrations, and more stable salinity conditions than the central lagoon. Mean phytoplankton biovolumes were substantially higher at the sites in the northern lagoon than at the sites in the central lagoon, and algal blooms were more common and intense in the former region. Inter-annual patterns of phytoplankton biovolume were also different in the northern and central lagoon. In the northern lagoon, phytoplankton biovolumes were lowest during the drought period, from the autumn of 1998 to the spring of 2001. By contrast, algal bloom events in the central lagoon were not only less frequent but were not tied to periods of high rainfall. The most widespread and common bloom formers were the potentially toxic dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense and two centric diatoms, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus and Cerataulina pelagica. Many of the biovolume peaks observed over the study period were attributable to these three species. The results of time series modeling of phytoplankton dynamics further highlighted the disparities between the two regions of the lagoon in terms of the suite of parameters that best predict the observed trends in the biomass of phytoplankton. Overall, the outcome of this initial modeling effort in the Indian River Lagoon suggests that time series approaches can help define the factors that influence phytoplankton dynamics.  相似文献

Porewater (i.e., groundwater) samples were collected from multi-level piezometers across the freshwater-saltwater seepage face within the Indian River Lagoon subterranean estuary along Florida’s (USA) Atlantic coast for analysis of the rare earth elements (REE). Surface water samples for REE analysis were also collected from the water column of the Indian River Lagoon as well as two local rivers (Eau Gallie River, Crane Creek) that flow into the lagoon within the study area. Concentrations of REEs in porewaters from the subterranean estuary are 10-100 times higher than typical seawater values (e.g., Nd ranges from 217 to 2409 pmol kg−1), with submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) at the freshwater-saltwater seepage face exhibiting the highest REE concentrations. The elevated REE concentrations for SGD at the seepage face are too high to be the result of simple, binary mixing between a seawater end-member and local terrestrial SGD. Instead, the high REE concentrations indicate that geochemical reactions occurring within the subterranean estuary contribute substantially to the REE cycle. A simple mass balance model is used to investigate the cycling of REEs in the Indian River Lagoon and its underlying subterranean estuary. Mass balance modeling reveals that the Indian River Lagoon is approximately at steady-state with respect to the REE fluxes into and out of the lagoon. However, the subterranean estuary is not at steady-state with respect to the REE fluxes. Specifically, the model suggests that the SGD Nd flux, for example, exported from the subterranean estuary to the overlying lagoon waters exceeds the combined input to the subterranean estuary from terrestrial SGD and recirculating marine SGD by, on average, ∼100 mmol day−1. The mass balance model also reveals that the subterranean estuary is a net source of light REEs (LREE) and middle REEs (MREE) to the overlying lagoon waters, but acts as a sink for the heavy REEs (HREE). Geochemical modeling and statistical analysis further suggests that this fractionation occurs, in part, due to the coupling between REE cycling and iron redox cycling within the Indian River Lagoon subterranean estuary. The net SGD flux of Nd to the Indian River Lagoon is ∼7-fold larger than the local effective river flux to these coastal waters. This previously unrecognized source of Nd to the coastal ocean could conceivably be important to the global oceanic Nd budget, and help to resolve the oceanic “Nd paradox” by accounting for a substantial fraction of the hypothesized missing Nd flux to the ocean.  相似文献

Biodeposition rates were studied for a fouling community with a biomass of 6–10 kg per m2 dry wt including shells in which the barnacle Balanus eburneus was a dominant species. The fouling community filtered Indian River lagoon water containing 2–15 mg per 1 mud-size particles and deposited them as sand-size fecal pellets. Measurements of the fecal pellet flux by sediment traps indicated seasonal variations between 16.7 and 74.8 g per m2 per day. A significant correlation was found between fecal pellet flux and temperature (r=0.90; p<0.001). The average flux of fecal pellet deposition was four times greater than the average flux of suspended particle settling without biological influence. Suspended sediment concentration did not significantly affect the rate of biodeposition. Annual biodeposition was 18 kg per m2.  相似文献

Trawl collections indicate that the fish community of the Belize barrier reef lagoon is dominated numerically and in biomass by grunts (Haemulidae), especiallyHaemulon sciurus andHaemulon flavolineatum. Although the gear selected for small sizes, length frequency analysis indicated seasonality in recruitment of the dominant species of grunts. Apogonids and tetraodontiform fishes were also dominant components of the community. Most fishes collected were juveniles of species that occur as adults on the main reef, or were small species that are resident in the lagoon. Of three habitats sampled, the mangrove creek had the greatest relative abundance and biomass of fishes, followed by the seagrass bed and the sand-rubble zone. There were no significant seasonal differences in fish relative abundance or biomass. Community structure analysis indicated a uniqueness in the mangrove fish community. Diversity (H′) was high, and was due to high species richness and evenness of distribution of individuals among species. The Belize barrier reef lagoon serves as an important nursery habitat for juvenile fishes.  相似文献

A year-long trawl survey of the mangrove-fringed Laguna Joyuda, Puerto Rico yielded 41 species of juvenile and adult fishes. Twelve percent of the species and 55% of the individuals were residents in the lagoon; 56% of the species and 44% of the individuals were cyclic visitors, mostly juveniles of species which spawn offshore. The lagoon yielded fewer species than tropical estuaries in continental regions of the Caribbean and temperate estuaries of North America. However, paralleling other estuarine habitats, Laguna Joyuda supported three primary types of fishes, a resident small flatfish (Achirus lineatus), a complex of transient juveniles (Gerreidae, paralleling the Sciaenidae of higher latitudes), and small planktivores (Anchoa spp.). Seasonal patterns in the abundance of individual species were not strong, but overall abundance showed a wet season maximum, particularly because of recruitment of anchovies and cyclic visitors in April, May, and June. Wet season abundance corresponded with highest water column productivity and detrital input to the benthos. Fishes associated with the water column appeared to show greater variation in abundance than those associated with more stable benthic food webs.  相似文献

A two-year trawl study of Laguna Joyuda, Puerto Rico, a small, polyhaline lagoon with restricted oceanic exchange, yielded 803 crabs belonging to sixCallinectes species.Callinectes danae was the most abundant (35.7%), followed byC. sapidus (21%),C. ornatus (12.6%),C. bocourti (12.1%),C. exasperatus (1.2%), andC. larvatus (0.4%). Abundances of different species differed more spatially than temporally despite very homogeneous salinities.Callinectes bocourti andC. sapidus were most abundant furthest from the lagoon’s inlet, whileC. danae andC. ornatus were most abundant near the inlet and in the center of lagoon. Juveniles were least abundant in the center of the lagoon. Size frequencies of most species showed common trends with high percentages of small crabs furthest from the inlet, and high percentages of larger crabs near the inlet and central parts of the lagoon. Distributional patterns appear to be a result of complex interactions of habitat preferences and intra- and interspecific interactions among the crabs.  相似文献

The identified mollusks from the Burullus lagoon of Egypt (Eastern Mediterranean) are represented by four bivalve species and four gastropod species. Sources of heavy metals pollution in the Burullus lagoon include phosphate fertilizers, sewage and oil spills from fishing boats.The Cerastoderma glaucum species has a wide distribution in the central part of the studied area with satisfying criteria required for good bio-monitors of pollution. High concentrations of heavy metals are found in water, at the eastern side of the lagoon, while low concentrations were detected in the central and western sides of the lagoon. Pirenella conica constitutes the total gastropods assemblages, reflecting this species tolerance to the high concentration of heavy metals. Meanwhile, the total pelecypods in bottom lagoon sediments are completely absent in the eastern parts of the lagoon, which may be due to the sensitivity of pelecypods to the accumulation of heavy metals.  相似文献

Spawning biology and spawn fishery of three valuable species of Indian major carps,Catla catla, Labeo rohita andCirrhinus mrigala, in the lower Halda River, Bangladesh, were studied in 1978. The major carps spawned only in the Sonairchar oxbow-bend from April to June on or near the dates of the full moon and the new moon. The tide was then at its highest level, and there was heavy flood water runoff from the hill region with sharp increases in water level, turbidity and current velocity, as well as decreases in water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and hydrogen ion concentration. These three heterogeneric species, as a result of parallelism or convergence in evolution, overlap in their environmental requirements for spawning. The nursery ground of the major carp fry spawned in the Halda River was found to be in the Bay of Bengal. The brood stock origin is suspected to be at the Shankha River, 40 miles south of the Karnafuli River. The spawn fishery in the Halda River was intensive but inefficient. Engineering works and water management schemes are threatening the spawning habitat.  相似文献

Seven species of mojarras (Gerreidae) were collected from three stations in the Indian River lagoon near the Sebastian Inlet, Florida over an eighteen month period to study spatial and temporal variations in occurrence and feeding habits. Two major habitats common to this area were represented in the study; a sandy beach and a seagrass flat. Of the 2,899 gerreids collected,Eucinostomus gula represented 67% and was found primarily in theHalodule seagrass site. The next most abundant species,E. argenteus (11%),E. jonesi andE. lefroyi (each 10%), were found most frequently at the inlet site.Diapterus auratus, E. melanopterus, andGerres cinereus were captured infrequently and were considered incidental. Prey items found included amphipods, bivalves, copepods, fish eggs, foraminifera, isopods, nematodes, ostracods, polychaetes and crustacean parts. Significant amounts of sand and unidentifiable amorphous debris were also included in the gut content analysis. Little interspecific variation in diet was found among the four major species examined. The general shift seen from a diet composed primarily of copepods and other crustaceans to one of polychaetes suggests an intraspecific ontogenetic progression. Spatial variations in diet composition were also indicated between the two major habitats. Feeding analyses showed gerreids to be diurnal feeders with the greatest consumption (total gut content weight) occurring at dusk.  相似文献

Estuarine species with wide geographic distributions often experience tidal regimes that vary significantly throughout their range. Plasticity in behaviors associated with the tide is expected to enable synchronization with local tides. The American horseshoe crabLimulus polyphemus typically inhabits estuaries and coastal areas with pronounced semi-diurnal tides that play a role in synchronizing the timing of spawning and larval hatching, but also lives in areas that lack significant tides and associated synchronization cues. We investigated the spatial and temporal pattern of adult spawning and larval hatching ofL. polyphemus in a microtidal coastal lagoon (Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA). Spawning activity and larval abundance were monitored weekly February 1998–August 2000 at sites spanning 100 km of the lagoon. To identify possible synchronization cues for spawning and hatching success, the presence of adult and larvalL. polyphemus were related to environmental and hydrologic variables using logistic regression. The presence of spawning adults varied significantly among the sub-basins of the lagoon, with the highest densities occurring in the Banana River. Large spawning aggregations were not observed and densities never exceeded 6 m−2. Spawning occurred year-round but varied seasonally with episodes of increased mating activity in the early spring. The occurrence of mating pairs was episodic and was not synchronized among sites. Larval densities were low (4 m−3) and larvae were present at only 12 of the 21 sites. Hatching success was decoupled temporally from spawning activity, with peaks in larval abundance occurring approximately 8 wk after peaks in spawning. Larval abundance was associated with periods of high water. Reproductive activity of horseshoe crabs in the lagoon differs significantly from populations inhabiting areas with semi-diurnal and diurnal tides. These differences are likely due to the lack of periodic tidally-related synchronization cues and regular beach inundation.  相似文献

Fossil remains of Euceratherium collinum (extinct shrub-ox) have been found throughout North America, including the Grand Canyon. Recent finds from the Escalante River Basin in southern Utah further extend the animal's range into the heart of the Colorado Plateau. E. collinum teeth and a metapodial condyle (foot bone) have been recovered in association with large distinctively shaped dung pellets, a morphology similar to a ‘Hershey's Kiss’ (HK), from a late Pleistocene dung layer in Bechan Cave. HK dung pellets have also been recovered from other alcoves in the Escalante River Basin including Willow and Fortymile canyons. Detailed analyses of the HK pellets confirmed them to be E. collinum and indicate a browser-type diet dominated (> 95%) by trees and shrubs: Artemisia tridentata (big sagebrush), Acacia sp. (acacia), Quercus (oak), and Chrysothamnus (rabbit brush). The retrieval of spring and fall pollen suggests E. collinum was a year-round resident in the Escalante River Basin.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of abundance of the zooplankton of Tomales Bay, California, were studied over one year from August 1987 to September 1988. Samples were taken on six transects up the long axis of the bay, and the species composition and abundance of common species were determined. Distribution patterns were similar to those observed in other estuaries and bays, with species from nearby neritic waters occurring in the outer bay and a few resident species in the inner bay. This pattern may be best explained by size-selective predation within the bay. Most alternative explanations can be ruled out for Tomales Bay, except for possible temperature effects on cool-temperate neritic species. The four common species ofAcartia in Tomales Bay were in two subgenera, each of which included a neritic species and a smaller inner-bay species. The occurrence of the smaller of each pair in the inner bay, which has been observed forAcartia and other species in other estuaries and bays, may also be a result of size-selective predation.  相似文献

The ichthyofauna of the Sundays Estuary was investigated by monthly seine netting over a period of a year. Forty-seven species were captured though 23 of these were represented by a total catch of less than 25 specimens each. The small clupeidGilchristella aestuarius was numerically dominant and constituted 80%, of the catch. The study confirms that in addition to this species, two species of goby,Caffrogobius multifasciatus andPsammogobius knysnaensis and the soleSolea bleekeri complete their life cycles in the estuary. Many other species such as mullet, utilize the estuary as a juvenile nursery area. First year juveniles ofRhabdosargus holubi, Lithognathus lithognathus, Pomadasys commersonni andMonodactylus falciformis, by virtue of their abundance in the Sundays Estuary and other South African estuaries, and their absence from other coastal environments, appear to be dependent on estuaries as juvenile nursery areas.  相似文献

Mangrove Lagoon, located on the island of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI), is one of few actively bioluminescent lagoons in a location experiencing significant anthropogenic impacts. The bioluminescence is due to an abundance of the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense in the water column. We recovered surface sediments and sediment cores from Mangrove Lagoon to analyze the spatial distribution and temporal variability of P. bahamense cysts in this system. Surface sediment P. bahamense cyst concentrations ranged from 0 to 466 cysts g?1 dry sediment, with higher abundances associated with elevated surface water nutrient concentrations and a mixed terrestrial–marine organic matter source regime. In combination with available bioassay data, we hypothesize that phytoplankton utilize nutrients rapidly and subsequent decay of organic matter makes nutrients available for dinoflagellates at the sediment–water interface in the eastern and northern quadrants of the lagoon. However, the nutrients are rapidly exhausted during counterclockwise lagoon circulation resulting in the decline of primary productivity and dinoflagellate abundance in the western quadrants. Downcore profiles suggest that P. bahamense blooms have been occurring for decades, declining in recent years. No cysts were present in sediments predating dredging activities of the 1960s that created Mangrove Lagoon. Recent reductions in cyst abundance may be the result of limited primary productivity caused by restricted water exchange with Salt River Bay due to shallowing of a sill at the mouth of the lagoon. This research highlights the need for more comprehensive geochemical and fossil analyses to better understand long-term ecological variability and inform conservation efforts of these unique habitats.  相似文献

Field data of tidal current speeds collected January 9–31, 1990, in Sebastian Inlet, which connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon on the east coast of central Florida, show that the average Eulerian and Stokes residual currents are both lagoonward. This pattern can be used to explain the long-term trend of accumulations of marine sediments on the flood tidal delta adjacent to the lagoon end of the inlet. Numerical model results indicate that the long-term Stokes residual current is mainly determined by the tidal characteristics of the lagoon and ocean, and subsequently, are less variable. The long-term lagoonward Eulerian current, on the other hand, is interrupted by episodic weather events such as frontal storms. Storms can cause the abrupt superelevation of instantaneous water-levels on the lagoon side of the inlet. The short-lived pulses of freshwater inflow into the lagoon associated with storms could be discharged through the inlet instantaneously. Both the instantaneous superelevation of lagoon water levels and freshwater outflow can cause temporary reversal of Eulerian residual current in the inlet. Therefore, the general residual flow pattern in Sebastian Inlet is not only determined by the tidal characteristics of the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon but also by the wind and precipitation associated with episodic storms, and by the long-term mean sea-level difference between the lagoon and the ocean.  相似文献

During a comprehensive survey of fauna associated with James River oyster reefs in 1971–72, a large population of the spionid polychaeteBoccardia hamata was found. The abundance of this boring species was greater than that of the well-known oyster pestPolydora websteri. B. hamata has not been reported previously in the Chesapeake Bay system and its occurrence on the east coast of the United States is not common. The large numbers in 1971–72 and continued presence ofB. hamata in 1975 suggests that the species may be well established in the James River. This may have some implications to the oyster industry if the species is as harmful as other boring spionids.  相似文献

Four, 32-day current meter records from the Indian River lagoon, Florida, are used to characterize flow patterns along the Intracoastal Waterway in a coastal lagoon. The M2 tidal constituent amplitude decreases from 58 cm per s near the Fort Pierce Inlet to only 7 cm per s in the interior of the lagoon. The relative importance of the nontidal variance in the current meter records increases from 0.6% to 26.6% of the total over the same distance. Plots of net displacement over time intervals of one to 16 days suggest relatively rapid flushing near the inlet, but in the interior of the lagoon periods of little or no net movement are increasingly common. Low-frequency motions at all four sites are coherent with windstress over time scales in excess of approximately two days.  相似文献

The Lagoon of Venice is a wide, shallow coastal basin that extends for about 50 km along the northwest coast of the Adriatic Sea. The lagoon has been substantially modified through the actions of man over the last century through the artificial control of the hydraulic dynamics of the laggon including the construction of channels to facilitate navigation. The lagoon is subjected to considerable pollutant loading through the drainage of land under cultivation, municipal sewage, and industrial effluents. In this paper are reported the results of observations designed to document recent changes in macroalgal species composition, seasonal cycles of primary producers and nutrient levels, and the effects of the macroalgal community on concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants. The dominant macroalgae in the lagoon wasUlva rigida, and the levels of plant nutrients and pollutants were influenced by the seasonal cycles of the macroalgal community.  相似文献

Sedimentological, geochemical and micropalaeontological data from sediment cores in the northwestern Adriatic Sea were obtained to reconstruct the stratigraphic framework and palaeogeographic setting during the last post‐glacial sea‐level rise (14000–6000 yr BP). Four lithostratigraphic units were identified: (a) distal plain deposits (>14000 yr BP), submerged during the first phases of marine ingression; (b) coastal lagoon system; (c) barrier‐lagoon system, which is dated back to between 10019 ± 61 and 10228 ± 174 cal. yr BP from 14C dating on peat and shell remains; (d) marine prodelta deposits (<5500 yr BP). Geochemical data allow the identification of three distinct sediment sources: River Po, River Adige and Eastern Alpine rivers characterised by decreasing Ni/Mg ratios (50–70, 8–15 and 5–10, respectively) and Ba/Al ratios of 45–55, 55–65 and 35–45, respectively. The three sources display different relative abundances in time. During the Lateglacial, the Po is the main sediment source for the southern cores, whereas the Eastern Alps and the River Adige are the main sediment sources for the northern cores. This suggests a northern position of the Po River bed compared to previous studies. Coastal drowning led to a homogenization of the provenance signal within the sediments. Only after the marine transgression does a River Po signal appear in the northern cores. At the same time, in the southern cores the signal of Eastern Alpine rivers becomes stronger.
