Abstract

The use of computer-generated perspective views, often named as three-dimensional (3D) maps, is growing. These terrain visualisations should be more understandable for users without cartographic education, which are not familiar with contour lines. Within the study, two eye-tracking experiments and online questionnaire were used for investigating the difference between user cognition of classical two-dimensional (2D) visualisation with contour lines and perspective 3D view. Questionnaire was focused on maps understandability, suitability and aesthetics. Results of the questionnaire shows, that the majority of participants prefer 3D visualisation. First eye-tracking experiment was designed as a pair of maps in one stimulus. One shows 2D visualisation, the other 3D visualisation. No significant differences between user preferences of 2D and 3D visualisation were found, but the results were influenced with the order of the maps in the stimuli. Because of that another experiment was designed. In this case stimuli contained only one of two possible visualisations (2D and 3D). ScanPath comparison of this experiment results confirmed that users have different strategies for cognition of 2D and 3D visualisation, although statistically significant difference between both types of visualisation was found in the ScanPath length metric only.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for terrain generalization using Laplacian pyramids. The method pre-processes digital terrain for generating cartographically generalized 3D maps. Map authors can attenuated or amplify selected frequency bands of the terrain with a graphical interface imitating an audio equalizer. Ridge lines and valley lines are localized by curvature indices, and their characteristic shapes are preserved or emphasized using additional sets of equalizer controls. Frequency bands are adjusted separately for the foreground and the background to remove visually disturbing terrain detail in the background. This is relevant for 3D maps in central perspective projection that considerably compresses distant terrain features. The proposed generalization method was implemented in Terrain Equalizer, a free and open-source application providing a graphical interface with interactive 3D previews (available at http://www.terraincartography.com/). Using this application, disturbing high frequency details can be easily removed and major mountain forms can be accentuated. The level of generalization can be adjusted seamlessly from the foreground to the background of the 3D map. Topographic break lines, such as ridge or valley lines, are successfully preserved, which is important for conveying the characteristic shape of a generalized terrain.

Abstract

Whilst it can be fairly stated that the post war years have seen an upsurge of interest in the design of maps as printed material, the same cannot be said of the treatment of maps for projection, whether by 35 mm slides or overhead methods.  相似文献

Abstract

While graphic variables in 2D maps have been extensively investigated, 4D cartography is still a widely unexplored field. In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of 4D maps (three spatial dimensions plus time) for cartographically illustrating spatio-temporal environmental phenomena. The presented approach focuses mostly on explorative research rather than on enhancement and extension of existing methods and principles. The user study described in the paper shows that 4D cartography is not a well-explored research area and that many experienced map users try to apply their knowledge from 2D maps to 4D dynamic visualisations. Thus, in order to foster the discussion within the community, we formulated several basic research questions for the area of 4D cartography, which range from methods for representing time in 4D visualisations and understanding the temporal context to finding generic methods to achieve optimized temporal generalisation and a consistent definition of graphical variables for 3D and 4D.  相似文献

Abstract

A GIS based approach is proposed for the integration of three thematic maps viz. geomorphology, drainage density and slope using fuzzy logic for the assessment of ground water resource potential of a soft rock terrain of Midnapur District, West Bengal, India. The geomorphology and drainage density maps of the area are prepared from IRS‐1B LISS‐II data, and the slope map is obtained from the contours depicted on the topographic map of Survey of India. Each feature of all the thematic maps is assigned with individual fuzzy set values within a range between 0 to 1 according to their relative importance in the prediction of ground water occurrence. The maps are then integrated through fuzzy operation to model the ground water potential zone of the study area. The evolved model while verified with surface geophysical results is found to be in good agreement.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper the cartographic grids engraved on two antique instruments from Iran for finding the sacred direction and distance to Mecca are discussed. It appears that these grids can be well explained in terms of the Mecca-centred retro-azimuthal orthographic projection described in 1968 by J. E. Jackson. In this projection the lines of constant latitude reduce to a set of ellipses with their major axes parallel to the equator and the lines of the constant longitudes reduce to a set of non-equidistant straight lines parallel to the north-south direction. It is shown that the curves actually engraved on the instrument conform to this projection and can be fairly easily constructed. This interpretation of the grid on the Iranian instruments stands in contrast with another explanation, recently proposed by King (1999), which is based on medieval Arabic concepts such as the so-called 'methods of the zijes'. Insufficiently accurate workmanship makes it impossible to distinguish between the two explanations through the study of the instruments themselves. The newly gained insight into the projection itself, however, shows that a direct relation between the Iranian maps and Islamic mappings insight knows from the ninth century, as suggested by King, does not exit. Thus, it is concluded that it is as yet completely unknown when and where the very idea behind the Iranian cartographic grid was first conceived, and that the quest for their historical background is still open.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) seeks to i) create semantically accessible terrain features from the pixel-based 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) data, and ii) enhance the usability of the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) by associating boundaries with GNIS features whose spatial representation is currently limited to 2D point locations. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was determined to be a promising method to approach both goals. An existing GEOBIA workflow was modified and the resulting segmented objects and terrain categories tested for a strategically chosen physiographic province in the mid-western US, the Ozark Plateaus. The chi-squared test of independence confirmed that there is significant overall spatial association between terrain categories of the GEOBIA and GNIS feature classes. Contingency table analysis also suggests strong category-specific associations between select GNIS and GEOBIA classes. However, 3D visual analysis revealed that GEOBIA objects resembled segmented regions more than they did individual landform objects, with their boundaries often failing to correspond to match what people would likely perceive as landforms. Still, objects derived through GEOBIA can provide initial baseline landscape divisions that can improve the efficiency of more specialized feature extraction methods.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite the now-ubiquitous two-dimensional (2D) electronic maps, three-dimensional (3D) globe viewers, or 3D geo-browsers such as Google Earth and NASA World Wind have gained much attention. However, the effect of such interactive 3D geo-browsers on spatial knowledge acquisition and decision-making is not well known. This study aims to explore the potential benefits of using interactive 3D geo-browsers in three processes of pedestrian navigation (self-localization, spatial knowledge acquisition, and decision-making) in digital environments. We employed eye tracking to show differences of visual attention in pedestrian navigation between a 2D map (Google Map) and a 3D geo-browser (Google Earth). The results indicated that benefits and drawbacks of 3D representations are task dependent. Participants using the 3D geo-browser had an extensively visual search resulting in significantly longer response time than the 2D participants for spatial knowledge acquisition, whereas 3D users performed a more efficient visual search and resulted in a better navigation performance at complex decision points. We speculate that the inefficient knowledge acquisition when using the 3D geo-browser was most probably due to information overload and obstructed views. Landmarks in photorealistic 3D models assisted recall of spatial knowledge from mental maps, which contributed to efficient decision-making at a complex turning point. These empirical results can be helpful to improve the usability of pedestrian navigation systems.  相似文献

Scree Representation on Topographic Maps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract

<title/>

Scree patterns are an important element of mountain maps in Swiss style. The size and density of scree dots vary with the exposition towards a source of illumination, which makes the dots extremely labour intensive to map without specialized algorithms. This paper identifies design principles for the symbolisation of scree fields on mountain slopes and presents a digital method for the quick placement of dot symbols requiring only minimal interventions by a cartographer. When digitally produced scree is combined with a shaded relief and a rock drawing, the terrain appears as a continuous three-dimensional surface to the reader. The described method is implemented in Scree Painter, a specialized free open-source software application. Scree patterns produced with Scree Painter match the quality standards of manually generated scree representations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Recent discoveries of Wehrmacht Maps in the Military Archive of the Federal Archive of Germany in Freiburg im Breisgau raised the motivation for further investigations into the history of the internationally employed Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection which actually represents a prerequisite for the global use of Global Positioning System (GPS) – and thus of any type of navigation – instruments. In contrast to the frequently stated opinion that this map projection was first operationally used by U.S. Americans it turned out that presumably the first operational maps with indication of the orthogonal UTM grid were produced by German Wehrmacht officers prior to the post World War (WW) II triumph of this projection. Based on the authors´ recent discoveries this article reveals some hitherto hardly known facts concerning the history of cartography of the 1940s.  相似文献

Abstract

During the Second World War, the German army developed the largest organization of any nation ever to contribute military applications of earth science in wartime. In the summer of 1940, its military geologists assisted planning for potentially the greatest amphibious assault to that time in history by preparing maps which analysed the terrain of southeast England in terms of coastal geomorphology, groundwater supply, quarry sites for construction materials and off-road trafficability. These specialist maps were generated at scales of 1:50 000, 1:100 000 or 1:250 000 by annotating topographical base maps, derived from the then current Ordnance Survey maps at most similar scale, with data derived from maps and memoirs published by the Geological Survey of Great Britain or larger-scale Ordnance Survey maps. They represent an early example of geotechnical mapping skills developed more fully in the German armed forces for operations elsewhere later in the war.  相似文献

Abstract

</p>Gamepads and joysticks have the potential to improve spatial navigation in virtual globes, block diagrams and 2D maps. Digital school atlases, in particular, can become more engaging if support for gamepads and joysticks is added, as children and adolescents are very proficient at using these devices. The fusion of gaming devices and interactive school atlases offers interesting new use cases: teachers can control a digital wall map with a remote-control gamepad while lecturing from the front of the classroom, or students can explore maps on their personal computers using an enticing way to interact. This paper presents these use cases, the characteristics of the most common gaming devices, and discusses spatial navigation with gamepads and joysticks for globes, block diagrams and 2D maps. The ideas presented originated from the ongoing development of a new, interactive version of the Swiss World Atlas for schools.  <a href="relate_search.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&aid=5A172168B32099AE544AB8BD3EC6ADF4&language=1" target="_blank">相似文献</a>    </div> <div><br></div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="search_article"> <div class="search_articleleft">15.</div> <div class="search_articleright"> <div> <a class="a1" href="view_abstract.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=58BC0739C081941C0E3CAE6755A69C39&aid=2FD679FEDEFD75282C4127341B4930A9&yid=FF7AA908D58E97FA&vid=94E7F66E6C42FA23&iid=39EEF47180459690&sid=EC34D52BE81085CE&eid=4AD4BA66429F5627&referenced_num=" target="_blank">A SEMI-GRAPHIC CONSTRUCTION FOR THE CONICAL ORTHOMORPHIC PROJECTION WITH ONE STANDARD PARALLELt</a>   <em><strong></strong></em>   </div> <div> <a class="a2" href="#">《测量评论》</a>2013,45(93):316-321 </div> <div><b>Abstract</b></p>The advantages of orthomorphic projections for topographical maps, whether for civil or military uses, have been increasingly realised in recent years. This has led to their gradual adoption as bases for map series by the leading countries, the conical type having been adopted in France for the new 1 : 50,000 maps, in Canada for the National Defence maps and in Britain by the Directorate of Military Survey for some useful European series. Appreciation of the nature and properties of graticules can best be achieved through an understanding of the theory of the projection system, whether the exposition be mathematically or partly graphically developed. Whereas the cylindrical and zenithal types of the orthomorphic projections have some explanation in graphical form there has been no comparable alternative to the difficult mathematical treatment of the conical type. The semi-graphic method presented here has been developed to contribute towards such a graphical exposition and in its method demands only a modest mathematical ability.  <a href="relate_search.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&aid=2FD679FEDEFD75282C4127341B4930A9&language=1" target="_blank">相似文献</a>    </div> <div><br></div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="search_article"> <div class="search_articleleft">16.</div> <div class="search_articleright"> <div> <a class="a1" href="view_abstract.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=54EDFC5C9E2D6205EFC5491C9D2D7EDA&aid=C0B928F5CDD64473A0670327B0408042&yid=0702FE8EC3581E51&vid=59906B3B2830C2C5&iid=AA76E167F386B6B3&sid=AF407E3178C0B145&eid=F7C11D7E3E8C5D3F&referenced_num=" target="_blank">GROUND CONTROL DETERMINATION FOR REGISTRATION OF SATELLITE IMAGERY USING DIGITAL MAP DATA</a>   <em><strong></strong></em>   </div> <div> <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=A.+C.+Morris" target="_blank">A. An important step in this process is determination of exterior orientation parameters for the images. Although an initial estimate is available in the SPOT header, refinements are required based on plan and height data. These are generally derived from photogrammetric measurements (or sources such as global positioning satellite systems), but accurate manual determination is time consuming. This paper reports an alternative approach by investigating the use of existing map data (located on the earth's surface and in a known projection) to find corresponding “ground control points” in both map and image. Available maps may be in digital or paper form depending on the state of development of mapping in the part of the world being studied. The last revision date and the cartographic generalisation employed will also effect the fidelity of the final result. Practical semi-automatic techniques for determining the height of ground control points from existing map data are described, including multiple profiles through digitised contour data, a commercial terrain modelling package based on Delaunay triangulation and the use of triangulation points on prominent features. Comparisons between the methods are made and results obtained are compared with Institut Géographique National datasets and photogrammetric measurements. Methods for fully automating not only the height determination but also the location of ground control features within a map database are discussed. Map and image registration is described and illustrated using Laser-Scan's Rover software. Interactive and automated methods of registration are discussed.  <a href="relate_search.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&aid=C0B928F5CDD64473A0670327B0408042&language=1" target="_blank">相似文献</a>    </div> <div><br></div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="search_article"> <div class="search_articleleft">17.</div> <div class="search_articleright"> <div> <a class="a1" href="view_abstract.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=0B356E83365D5D5B3C2287BA632FFDD4&aid=30E0502D22A8619D64DE6F6862FDF420&yid=FA004A8A4ED1540B&vid=659D3B06EBF534A7&iid=CA4FD0336C81A37A&sid=954CE65414DD94CA&eid=D46BA3D3D4B3C585&referenced_num=" target="_blank">Rendering 2D Lines on 3D Terrain Model with Optimization in Visual Quality and Running Performance</a>   <em><strong></strong></em>    <a href='get_pdf_url.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=0B356E83365D5D5B3C2287BA632FFDD4&aid=30E0502D22A8619D64DE6F6862FDF420&yid=FA004A8A4ED1540B&vid=659D3B06EBF534A7&iid=CA4FD0336C81A37A&sid=954CE65414DD94CA&eid=D46BA3D3D4B3C585&referenced_num=' target='_blank'><img src='/ch/ext_images/free.gif' valign='bottom' title='点击此处可从《Transactions in GIS》网站下载免费的PDF全文' border='0'></a>   <a href='get_pdf_url.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=0B356E83365D5D5B3C2287BA632FFDD4&aid=30E0502D22A8619D64DE6F6862FDF420&yid=FA004A8A4ED1540B&vid=659D3B06EBF534A7&iid=CA4FD0336C81A37A&sid=954CE65414DD94CA&eid=D46BA3D3D4B3C585&referenced_num=' target='_blank'>下载免费PDF全文</a> </div> <div> <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=Jiangfeng+She" target="_blank">Jiangfeng She</a>  <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=Xin+Tan" target="_blank">Xin Tan</a>  <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=Xingchen+Guo" target="_blank">Xingchen Guo</a>  <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=Junzhong+Tan" target="_blank">Junzhong Tan</a>  <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=Jianlong+Liu" target="_blank">Jianlong Liu</a> <a class="a2" href="#">《Transactions in GIS》</a>2017,21(1):169-185 </div> <div>With the gradual shift from 2D maps to a 3D virtual environment, various visual artifacts were generated by overlaying 2D map symbols on 3D terrain models. This work proposes a novel screen‐based method for rendering 2D vector lines with the accuracy of more than one pixel on the screen in real time. First, screen pixels are inversely projected onto a 3D terrain surface, and then onto the 2D vector plane. Next, these pixels are classified into three categories in terms of their intersection situation with the 2D lines. After that, a multiple sampling process is applied to the pixels that intersect with the 2D lines in order to eliminate visual artifacts, such as intermittence and aliasing (in pixel scale). Finally, a suitable point‐in‐polygon judgment is implemented to color each sample point quickly. The algorithm is realized in a heterogeneously parallel model so that the performance is improved and becomes acceptable.  <a href="relate_search.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&aid=30E0502D22A8619D64DE6F6862FDF420&language=1" target="_blank">相似文献</a>    </div> <div><br></div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="search_article"> <div class="search_articleleft">18.</div> <div class="search_articleright"> <div> <a class="a1" href="view_abstract.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=E368732C9100457C1DA7BD89610A4377&aid=E01C187B023FCF99B391846BC6C46337&yid=FFD10F7019FAA9EC&iid=CA4FD0336C81A37A&sid=9F6DA927E843CD50&eid=3D9746C06EC12B45&referenced_num=" target="_blank">OSM Buildings在三维电子地图中的应用研究</a>   <em><strong></strong></em>   </div> <div> <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=%e5%ad%99%e5%92%b8%e7%a3%8a" target="_blank">孙咸磊</a>  <a href="search_by_author.aspx?subject=astronomy_earth_science&major=chx&field=author_name&encoding=utf-8&q=%e8%ae%b8%e6%8d%8d%e5%8d%ab" target="_blank">许捍卫</a> <a class="a2" href="#">《测绘与空间地理信息》</a>2015,(1):206-208 </div> <div>三维建筑物是三维电子地图的重要组成要素,现有的网络地图普遍采用Web GL技术在地图上展现建筑物三维效果。 <a href="relate_search.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&aid=E01C187B023FCF99B391846BC6C46337&language=2" target="_blank">相似文献</a>    </div> <div><br></div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="search_article"> <div class="search_articleleft">19.</div> <div class="search_articleright"> <div> <a class="a1" href="view_abstract.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&jid=1EAFE3E626147FFD99DAD0378F9E1890&aid=94B60B1814EE12C529BC5C54DFD6810D&yid=FF7AA908D58E97FA&vid=771152D1ADC1C0EB&iid=38B194292C032A66&sid=0DEB7A8A66C33AAD&eid=D6354F61445E9456&referenced_num=" target="_blank">Where Do I Start? In this paper, a new approach to establish an AVE with a wide field of view is proposed, including real-time video projection, multiple video texture fusion and 3D visualization of moving objects. A new diagonally weighted algorithm is proposed to smooth the apparent gaps within the overlapping area between the two adjacent videos. A visualization method for the location and trajectory of a moving virtual object is proposed to display the moving object and its trajectory in the 3D virtual environment. The experimental results showed that the proposed set of algorithms are able to fuse multiple real-time videos with 3D models efficiently, and the experiment runs a 3D scene containing two million triangles and six real-time videos at around 55 frames per second on a laptop with 1GB of graphics card memory. In addition, a realistic AVE with a wide field of view was created based on the Digital Earth Science Platform by fusing three videos with a complex indoor virtual scene, visualizing a moving object and drawing its trajectory in the real time.  <a href="relate_search.aspx?pcid=E62459D214FD64A3C8082E4ED1ABABED5711027BBBDDD35B&cid=A41A70F4AB56AB1B&aid=58A97B94B44A0BF9A462F505BF9494A6&language=1" target="_blank">相似文献</a>    </div> <div><br></div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> <table width="870" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tr> <td height="40" align="center" class="fo2"> <a href="#" onClick="this.style.behavior='url(#default#homepage)';this.setHomePage('http://td.alljournals.com.cn')">设为首页</a> <span class="STYLE1">|</span> <a href="http://www.alljournals.cn/note.aspx">免责声明</a> <span class="STYLE1">|</span> <a href="http://www.e-tiller.com"><u>关于勤云</u></a> <span class="STYLE1">|</span> <a href="javascript:window.external.addFavorite('http://td.alljournals.com.cn','期刊界 All Journals---天文学、地球科学')">加入收藏</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td align="center" class="fo3"> <p align="center"> Copyright<span lang="en">©<a href="http://www.e-tiller.com"><u>北京勤云科技发展有限公司</u></a>  京ICP备09084417号    </span></p> </td> </tr> </table> </div> </body> </html>
