Although Italian composite atlases of the 16th century are seldom mentioned in the literature on historical cartography, these collections are very important for preserving a large number of maps that might otherwise be lost forever. The subject of the training of European surveyors has received a great deal of attention in the course of the last two Empire Conferences, but little or no mention has been made of the native surveyor, his education, work, and prospects. The subject is very important, however, and the account of the training of Africans for the N. Rhodesia Survey, which appeared in vol. iii, no. 21 of the Empire Survey Review, was read with considerable interest. It may not be out of place, therefore, to introduce this paper on the means adopted in Malaya to recruit and train an efficient staff of subordinates or “Technical Assistants” as they are termed locally.  相似文献

Thompson, R.E., in his paper on “The Condition for the Construction of a Conformal Projection”, deals with a subject which, in the opinion of the present writer, is rather insufficiently explained or dealt with in any text-book on Geodesy or on Map. Projections that he has seen. The comprehensive paper on the suspension of tapes by M. Hotine in the January, 1939, issue of the Empire Survey Review (v, 31, 2) did not contain any reference to this question, as was pointed out by A. J. Morley in a letter published on page 261 in the same volume (v, 34, 261). A brief analysis has been made by F. Yates of the theoretical effects of pulley eccentricity and misalignment (“Gold Coast Survey Department Records” VoL III, 1931, page 43) but I have not seen any further reference to the subject and have recently experienced the effects of such a defect in our own apparatus, so the followingnotes nlay be of interest. Before proceeding to details I will describe briefly those parts of the apparatus which are considered here and give a short summary of the whole paper.  相似文献

This paper discusses the current state of perceptual research concerning cartographic symbols. Initial discussion treats the theories and reasons behind the present popularity of perceptual studies in cartography. It is followed by a summary of the printed materials on this topic appearing in several prominent English language cartographic publications. A person who is newly entering the area of perceptual research in cartography may use this paper as a quick source for obtaining background in the area and thereby save valuable time from sifting through individual sources for information regarding what has already been done. Perhaps the most important requirement in any air survey is that the ground surveyed points used as a basis for controlling the photography should be correctly identified on the photographs. In the writer's experience more difficulties and delays have been caused by misidentifications of these points in the field than perhaps from any other cause, and yet very little has been written on this important subject, and there are no generally recognised methods of point identification. The Stereographic Projection, owing to the ease and accuracy with which it can be drawn on a small scale, offers natural attractiveness for the treatment of spherical geometry upon a plane surface. It would therefore be rash for a present-day writer to claim as novel what may well be an infringement of patent rights morally belonging to Hipparchus, who possibly knew most of what is worth knowing about the matter 2,000 years ago. Abstract

The paper summarizes one professor's observations and resulting approach to teaching a semester‐long course on the subject of field techniques as they relate to remote‐sensing campaigns. The text describes how a “learning‐by‐doing strategy” is applied to such a course. More specifically, the paper describes how the instructor requires students to design, construct, and actually implement “hardware solutions” to problems involving collection of spectral (and ancillary) data in the field. Pupils must test their developed methodologies and “technological creations” with regard to a focused research problem undertaken in a difficult field setting during a week‐long outdoor experience. The students are expected to evaluate, and possibly modify, their methods and procedures “on‐the‐fly.” Individual group research problems, methods, and hardware solutions are briefly described, and selected student evaluations of the experience are provided.  相似文献
