Observations of a limb flare and an associated loop prominence were obtained in H with the 512 channel magnetograph of the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Simultaneous radial and torsional oscillations with a period near 75 s, wavelength of 37 000 km, and amplitude of 1–2 km s–1 were detected in the loop approximately 90 min before the onset of the flare. We interpret these coupled oscillations in terms of a kink instability of a current carrying flux tube. The small-scale structure of solar magnetic fields has been studied using simultaneous recordings in the spectral lines Fe i 5250 Å and Fe i 5233 Å, obtained with the Kitt Peak multi-channel magnetograph. We find that more than 90% of the magnetic flux in active regions (excluding the sunspots), observed with a 2.4 by 2.4 aperture, is channelled through narrow filaments. This percentage is even higher in quiet areas. The field lines in a magnetic filament diverge rapidly with height, and part of the flux returns back to the neighbouring photosphere. Therefore the strong fields within a magnetic filament are surrounded by weak fields of the order of a few gauss of the opposite polarity. The field-strength distribution within a filament, including the surrounding opposite-polarity fields, seems to be almost the same for all filaments within a given active or quiet region.The analysis of a scan made during an imp. 2 flare showed that observations during and after the flare would give a fictitious decrease of the magnetic energy in the region by a factor of 2–3 due to line-profile changes during the flare.Visiting Astronomer, Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Preliminary results of magnetic field measurements in small sunspots from spectrograms obtained with the aid of the McMath Solar Telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory are presented. The measured intensities are greater than or equal to about 1200 Gauss. Furthermore, a broadening of the Fei line 6302.508 Å was found in some places of intergranular space. Spectroheliograms, obtained in certain Fraunhofer lines with the 82-cm solar image at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, show a bright photospheric network having the following properties:
  1. It resembles, but does not coincide with, the chromospheric network, the structure of the photospheric network being finer and more delicate than the relatively coarse structure of the chromospheric network.
  2. It is exactly cospatial with the network of non-sunspot photospheric magnetic fields.
  3. Its visibility in a given photospheric Fraunhofer line is primarily dependent on the states of ionization and excitation from which the line is formed and secondarily dependent on the Zeemansensitivity of the line-being most visible in low-excitation lines of neutral atoms and least visible in high-excitation lines of singly ionized atoms.
We conclude that these magnetic regions of the solar atmosphere are a few hundred degrees hotter than their surroundings, and that they are visible in white light near the limb as photospheric faculae.  相似文献

A new technique for displaying magnetograph observations is presented and applied to the 12-channel magnetograph at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Using the data from a raster scan, a digital spectroheliogram is constructed on the face of a cathode ray tube and photographed. This enables one to recognize patterns in magnetograph data as easily as with conventional photographs. Spectroheliograms taken in the CN(0, 0) violet band near 3883 Å show very small scale network and cell structures with high contrast. The bandhead itself, which is a broad feature due to overlap of several CN lines, allows the diagnostic simplicity of a continuum since motions, magnetic fields, and broadening mechanisms are unimportant. We have obtained spectroheliograms in the bandhead and center-to-limb photoelectric spectra of CN(0, 0) at Kitt Peak National Observatory. From the photoelectric spectra and a detailed analysis of the formation of the CN(0, 0) spectrum we derive a best-fit one-component upper photospheric model differing from that of the HSRA and recommend a change in solar carbon abundance from the HSRA value of logA c = 8.55 to logA c = 8.25. A preliminary solar Mn abundance of logN(Mn) = 5.41 (logN(H) = 12.00) is derived on the basis of fitting theoretical line profiles which include hyperfine structure (HFS) broadening to the profiles of the 5394.7, 5432.6, and 5537.8 lines of Mn observed at the center of the solar disk with the double-pass spectrograph of the McMath solar telescope at Kitt Peak. A time sequence of magnetograms and velocity-grams in the H and Fe i 6569 Å lines has been made at a rate of 12 h–1 of McMath Region 10385 from 26 to 29 October, 1969. The 14 flares observed during this period have been studied in relation to the configuration and changes in the magnetic and velocity fields. There was little correlation between flare position and the evolutionary changes in the photospheric magnetic and velocity field, except at large central meridian distances where the velocity observations suggested shearing taking place at flare locations. At central meridian distances > 30° we found that flares are located in areas of low line-of-sight photospheric velocity surrounded by higher velocity hills. The one exception to this was the only flare which produced a surge. We have observed the solar Caii H and K lines to obtain well-calibrated ratios of their core residual intensities. From three independent calibrations, one using a standard lamp, we conclude that the residual intensity ratio r(K3)/r(H3) is 1.048 ± 0.03 in the quiet chromosphere and 1.20 ± 0.03 in a plage region. These ratios correspond closely to those observed in stars with quiet and active chromospheres, respectively. For a chromospheric model suggested by the calcium lines and a four-level Caii ion, we compute H and K line profiles varying the direct collisional coupling and indirect radiative and collisional coupling via the 3 2 D level. Absorption band spectra of BH and BO have been searched for and not found in spectra of sunspots.Electronic oscillator strengths are available only for the A 1 -X 1 + system of the BH molecule. Existing models of the solar atmosphere predict a limb brightening in the far infrared wavelengths. At shorter wavelengths this effect is confined to the extreme limb but at 25 it extends inward from the limb to cos = 0.3. Observations of I()/I(1.0) were made with the McMath Solar Telescope through atmospheric windows at 10.4, 17.9, 20.4, and 24.2 microns, respectively. The measurements, after having been smoothed, are compared with the theoretical predictions taking into account the diffraction pattern of the telescope. This paper is based on observations in the H line with the aim to carry out a detailed study of the spotless flare of importance 1N that was observed at the Baikal Astrophysical Observatory on 16 March 1981. The study focuses on the evolution of the region of interest from the time of its appearance from behind the limb, and on the pre-flare activation of chromospheric features four hours before the flare. The disturbances that preceded the flare spanned an area of about 120 square degrees. The bulk of activations occurred along and near the path of the polarity inversion line (PIL) of the longitudinal component of the magnetic field. The flare was preceded by an eruptive filament, a disturbance of the fine structure of supergranulation cells, and by the formation of dark vortex structures in regions where flare ribbons form; dark mottles in these regions signaled the operation of an oscillatory process with a period of about 3–4 min, and the region where one of the flare ribbons formed showed a `tunnel' of a system of small-scale dark loops. A close association of the chromospheric activations and flare mottles, with the boundaries of the chromospheric and magnetic networks, is established.  相似文献

Mean profiles of eighteen neutral iron lines of varying strengths were measured at selected positions from the center of the solar disk to the limb. These profiles were obtained by rapid photoelectric scanning of the spectrum with a double-pass spectrometer. The Fe i lines selected are representative of most of the stronger low-lying transitions in the neutral iron atom. In addition to the iron lines, this observational program includes center-to-limb measurements of three Ti ii lines and of the Ca i resonance line 4226.7. We have detected chromospheric footpoints of the giant post-flare coronal arches discovered by HXIS a few years ago. H photographs obtained at Big Bear and Udaipur Solar Observatories show chromospheric signatures associated with 5 sequential giant arch events observed in the interval from 6 to 10 November, 1980. The set of footpoints at one end of the arches consists of enhancements within a plage at the northeast periphery of the active region and the set of footpoints at the other end of the arch consists of brightenings of the chromosphere south of the active region. Both sets of footpoints show very slow brightness variations correlated in time with the brightness variations of the X-ray arches. Current-free modelling of the coronal magnetic field by Kopp and Poletto (1989), based on a Kitt Peak magnetogram, confirms the identification of the two sets of footpoints by showing magnetic field lines connecting them.The brightenings appear as a succession of point-like enhancements whose individual lifetimes are of the time-scale of minutes but which continue to occur for periods of several hours. This behaviour allows us to infer a fine structure in the coronal arches, undetectable in the X-ray images. The discovery of these brightenings and their location at the periphery of the active region also alters our conception of the relationship of the giant arches to the flares that begin concurrently with them. The giant arch phenomenon appears now to be either: (1) a long-lived, semi-permanent, coronal structure which is revived and fed with plasma and energy by underlying dynamic flares, or alternatively (2) a system of high-altitude loops which open at the onset of every such flare and subsequently reconnect over intervals of many hours.  相似文献

The center to limb variation of solar spectral line positions, or limb effect, has been measured for the two neutral iron lines at 5250.2 Å and 5576.1 Å. Both limb effect curves show a disk-center reversal of 40–60 ms–1 and the 5576 data also exhibit a possible second reversal at the limb. Hei 10830 Å spectroheliograms of a major 3N two-ribbon flare occurring in Boulder Region 3885/3886 early on 4 September, 1982 are discussed and compared with H and soft X-ray observations of the event. This flare, observed for more than 60 hr in Hei 10830, was associated with the eruption of a large filament in the active region complex, the formation of coronal holes, a long-duration soft X-ray event, and was the probable source of a earthward coronal mass ejection and the largest geomagnetic storm of this solar cycle. Spectra of a 2B flare on 3 February, 1983 were observed simultaneously at H, H, and Can H, K lines with a multichannel spectrograph in the solar tower telescope of Nanjing University. The flare occurred in an extended region of penumbra at S 17 W07 from 05 : 41 to 07 : 00 UT. By use of an iterative method to solve the equations describing hydrostatic, radiative, and statistical equilibrium for hydrogen and ionized calcium atoms, five semi-empirical models corresponding to different times of the chromospheric flare have been computed. The results show that after the beginning of the flare, the heating of the chromosphere starts and the transition layer begins to be displaced downwards. However, during the impulsive phase the flare chromospheric region has a rapid outward expansion followed by a quick downward contraction. At the same time the transition layer starts to ascend and then descend again. After the H intensity maximum, the flare chromospheric region continues to condense and attains its most dense phase more than ten minutes after the maximum. Finally, the flare chromospheric region returns slowly to the normal chromospheric situation.  相似文献
