We present an analysis of new observations of a peculiar galaxy PGC60020, obtained with the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS with a multimode SCORPIO instrument. The observational data includes direct images in the B, V, R c photometric bands and long-slit spectra in the red range (the H?? line spectral region). Based on the analysis of these data it was found that PGC60020 belongs to the type of classical polar-ring galaxies. Its main body is an S0 galaxy, around the major axis of which a disk of gas, dust and stars is rotating in the plane inclined at an angle of about 60° to the galactic plane. A loop-shaped structure stretches from the southern part of this disk (possibly, a tidal tail) towards the SDSS J 171745.58+404137.1 galaxy.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Chatterjee, 1984), we studied the formation of ring galaxies due to head-on collisions between disk and spherical galaxies. The rings so formed are quite prominent and well defined. However, in the domain of rings, there are many faint rings which are ill defined and are so faint that they lie on the borderline of detectability. In this paper the formation of such rings is investigated.Using the impulsive approximation technique, in this paper we study an off-center collision between an exponential model disk galaxy and a polytropic (n=4) model spherical galaxy, in which the spherical galaxy moves normal to the plane of the disk galaxy and grazes its periphery. The radii of the two galaxies are taken to be equal, but due to the high central concentration of the spherical galaxy its radius is effectively one-third that of the disk galaxy. It is found that, as a result of the collision, the disk galaxy expands and attains an oblate shape. If the fractional change in binding energy of the disk galaxy, U/|U|, lies between 0.001 to 0.01, then a faint ring structure is formed which does not close on itself. If U/|U|0.01, then in addition to the faint ring a bridge and tail are formed. The ability of such low-energy collisions to affect even minor structural changes in the disk is due to the preferentially higher energy changes occurring in the side nearer to the perturbing galaxy than in the opposite side. Consequently, the structural changes produced are asymmetric.Such a faint ring may elude detection on photographs, but it will be revealed by sensitive photometric observations. There are several examples of such faint ring structures embedded in disks, which have been detected by observation.  相似文献

We present a study of pixel colour–magnitude diagrams (pCMDs) for a sample of 69 nearby galaxies chosen to span a wide range of Hubble types. Our goal is to determine how useful a pixel approach is for studying galaxies according to their stellar light distributions and content. The galaxy images were analysed on a pixel-by-pixel basis to reveal the structure of the individual pCMDs. We find that the average surface brightness (or projected mass density) in each pixel varies according to galaxy type. Early-type galaxies exhibit a clear 'prime sequence' and some pCMDs of face-on spirals reveal 'inverse-L' structures. We find that the colour dispersion at a given magnitude is found to be approximately constant in early-type galaxies but this quantity varies in the mid and late types. We investigate individual galaxies and find that the pCMDs can be used to pick out morphological features. We discuss the discovery of 'Red Hooks' in the pCMDs of six early-type galaxies and two spirals and postulate their origins. We develop quantitative methods to characterize the pCMDs, including measures of the blue-to-red light ratio and colour distributions of each galaxy and we organize these by morphological type. We compare the colours of the pixels in each galaxy with the stellar population models of Bruzual & Charlot to calculate star formation histories for each galaxy type and compare these to the stellar mass within each pixel. Maps of pixel stellar mass and mass-to-light ratio are compared to galaxy images. We apply the pCMD technique to three galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to test the usefulness of the analysis at high redshift. We propose that these results can be used as part of a new system of automated classification of galaxies that can be applied at high redshift.  相似文献

Highly noncircular outer stellar disks have been detected in two SA0 (unbarred) galaxies by comparing the spectroscopic data on the rotation of stars and the photometric data on the shape and orientation of isophotes. In NGC 502, the oval distortion of the disk is manifested in the shape of the inner and outer elliptical rings occupying wide radial zones between the bulge and the disk and at the outer disk edge; such a structure can be a consequence of the so-called “dry minor merger,” multiple cannibalization of gas-free satellites. In NGC 5485, the stellar kinematics is absolutely unrelated to the orientation of isophotes in the disk region, and for this galaxy the conclusion about its global triaxial structure is unavoidable.  相似文献

In order to find the physical parameters which determine the accuracy of pho- tometric redshifts, we compare the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts (photo-z's) for a large sample of ~ 80 000 SDSS-2MASS galaxies. Photo-z's in this paper are es- timated by using the artificial neural network photometric redshift method (ANNz). For a subset of~40000 randomly selected galaxies, we find that the photometric redshift recovers the spectroscopic redshifi distribution very well with rms of 0.016. Our main results are as follows: (1) Using magnitudes directly as input parameters produces more accurate photo-z's than using colors; (2) The inclusion of 2MASS (3, H, Ks) bands does not improve photo-z's significantly, which indicates that near infrared data might not be important for the low-redshift sample; (3) Adding the concentration index (essentially the steepness of the galaxy brightness profile) as an extra input can improve the photo-z's estimation up to~10 percent; (4) Dividing the sample into early- and late-type galaxies by using the concentration index, normal and abnormal galaxies by using the emission line flux ratios, and red and blue galaxies by using color index (g - r), we can improve the accuracy of photo-z's significantly; (5) Our analysis shows that the outliers (where there is a big difference between the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts) are mainly correlated with galaxy types, e.g., most outliers are late-type (blue) galaxies.  相似文献

In Lima et al. we presented a new method for estimating the redshift distribution,   N ( z )  , of a photometric galaxy sample, using photometric observables and weighted sampling from a spectroscopic subsample of the data. In this paper, we extend this method and explore various applications of it, using both simulations and real data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In addition to estimating the redshift distribution for an entire sample, the weighting method enables accurate estimates of the redshift probability distribution,   p ( z )  , for each galaxy in a photometric sample. Use of   p ( z )  in cosmological analyses can substantially reduce biases associated with traditional photometric redshifts, in which a single redshift estimate is associated with each galaxy. The weighting procedure also naturally indicates which galaxies in the photometric sample are expected to have accurate redshift estimates, namely those that lie in regions of photometric-observable space that are well sampled by the spectroscopic subsample. In addition to providing a method that has some advantages over standard photo- z estimates, the weights method can also be used in conjunction with photo- z estimates e.g. by providing improved estimation of   N ( z )  via deconvolution of   N ( z phot)  and improved estimates of photo- z scatter and bias. We present a publicly available   p ( z )  catalogue for ∼78 million SDSS DR7 galaxies.  相似文献

We present the results of the study of the orientation of the accretion disk relative to the host galaxy disk in Seyfert galaxies. We used a sample selected by a mostly isotropic property, the flux at 60 μm, with radio and optical data homogeneously observed and analyzed, to avoid selection effects. We found that the observed i and δ values, galaxy inclination and difference between the position angle of the jet and the galaxy major axis, respectively, are consistent with a random β-distribution, the angle between the jet and the galaxy plane axis. We also found that the previously suggested Zone of Avoidance disappears and was probably due to a selection effect. We suggest several explanations for the misalignment of the accretion disk relative to the galaxy disk.  相似文献

Observations of the pair of galaxies VV 330 with the SCORPIO multimode instrument on the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope are presented. Large-scale velocity fields of the ionized gas in Hα and brightness distributions in continuum and Hα have been constructed for both galaxies with the help of a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. Long-slit spectroscopy is used to study the stellar kinematics. Analysis of the data obtained has revealed a complex structure in each of the pair components. Three kinematic subsystems have been identified in UGC 5600: a stellar disk, an “inner gas ring” turned with respect to the disk through ~80°, and an outer gas disk. The stellar and outer gas disks are noncoplanar. Possible scenarios for the formation of the observed multicomponent kinematic galactic structure are considered, including the case where the large-scale velocity field of the gas is represented by the kinematic model of a disk with a warp. The velocity field in the second galaxy of the pair, UGC 5609, is more regular. A joint analysis of the data on the photometric structure and the velocity field has shown that this is probably a late-type spiral galaxy whose shape is distorted by the gravitational interaction, possibly, with UGC 5600.  相似文献

Numerical experiments undertaken to investigate the longevity and behavior of dark-lane elliptical galaxies are described. This is dynamically the same problem as a disk galaxy in a massive halo. Spiral galaxies are disks from a dynamical point of view. A disk of particles embedded in a self-consistent galaxy provides the basic model used for the experiments. This model is applicable to ordinary disk galaxies if the disk is interpreted as the visible galaxy and the galaxy is interpreted as the massive halo thought to be present around disk galaxies. Fully three-dimensional fully self-consistentn-body computer programs that can handle 100,000 particles are used for the experiments. The background galaxy is oblate, and the disk is inclined to the axis of the oblate galaxy, so the disk precesses differentially to produce a warp. A surprising result is that the galaxy center shifted, leaving the disk center orbiting around the galaxy center. This produces interesting phenomena reminiscent of observations in the region of the Galactic center.  相似文献

The local face-on disk galaxies are selected as galaxy sample from the main galaxy sample of the Seventh Data Release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR7). The correlations between the colors and sizes of disk galaxies with equivalent total stellar masses are statistically investigated and their realities are tested. It is found that for the disk galaxies with equivalent masses, the correlation between u-r color and size is very weak. However, there are anticorrelations between g-r, r-i, r-z colors and sizes, i.e., the larger are the sizes of galaxies, the bluer are their colors. This result means that the mass distribution of disk galaxies has a significant influence on their star formation history. The galaxies with more extended mass distributions evolve more slowly.  相似文献

We perform a series of comparisons between distance-independent photometric and spectroscopic properties used in the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) and fundamental plane (FP) methods of early-type galaxy distance estimation. The data are taken from two recent surveys: the SBF Survey of Galaxy Distances and the Streaming Motions of Abell Clusters (SMAC) FP survey. We derive a relation between     colour and Mg2 index using nearly 200 galaxies and discuss implications for Galactic extinction estimates and early-type galaxy stellar populations. We find that the reddenings from Schlegel et al. for galaxies with     appear to be overestimated by     per cent, but we do not find significant evidence for large-scale dipole errors in the extinction map. In comparison with stellar population models having solar elemental abundance ratios, the galaxies in our sample are generally too blue at a given Mg2; we ascribe this to the well-known enhancement of the α -elements in luminous early-type galaxies. We confirm a tight relation between stellar velocity dispersion σ and the SBF 'fluctuation count' parameter N¯ , which is a luminosity-weighted measure of the total number of stars in a galaxy. The correlation between N¯ and σ is even tighter than that between Mg2 and σ . Finally, we derive FP photometric parameters for 280 galaxies from the SBF survey data set. Comparisons with external sources allow us to estimate the errors on these parameters and derive the correction necessary to bring them on to the SMAC system. The data are used in a forthcoming paper, which compares the distances derived from the FP and SBF methods.  相似文献

Current views consider shell structures as bona fide signatures of a recent minor/major merging event though also weak interaction models (WIM) could produce long lasting shells on host galaxies possessing a stellar thick disc.We present a B V band photometric study of a sample of 5 shell galaxies belonging to the Malin & Carter (1983) compilation. The structural properties and colors of the galaxies, as well as the colors of their shells are examined in detail. We did not find signatures of the presence of double nuclei. NGC 7585 is the only E galaxy in the sample and has a moderately boxy structure. The other galaxies have either a discy structure or are mixed E/S0 type galaxies. NGC 474 is a true lenticular. NGC 6776 shows a diffuse asymmetric outer structure and a system of tails of the the same color of the galaxy body; but not clear shells. In general, the color of the shells in our sample is similar or slightly redder than that of the host galaxy, whose color, in turn, is typical of the early‐type morphological class. One of the outer shells of NGC 474 is significantly bluer than the body of the galaxy. Since NGC 474 appears to be interacting with NGC 470, the color of this one shell could be explained as result of a recent acquisition of material through tidal interaction. The WIM hypothesis could explain both the red and the blue shells of NGC 474, this latter acquired from the fly‐by of the nearby companion NGC 470, but the lack of the constancy of shell surface brightness as a ratio of the underlying galaxy brightness argues against WIM. We speculate about evidence, which also comes from different observations, that suggests a merging/accretion origin of the shells. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the fractions of different spiral galaxy types, especially bulgeless disks, from a complete and homogeneous sample of 15 127 edge‐on disk galaxies extracted from the sixth data release from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The sample is divided in broad morphological classes and sub types consisting of galaxies with bulges, intermediate types and galaxies which appear bulgeless. A small fraction of disky irregulars is also detected. The morphological separation is based on automated classification criteria which resemble the bulge sizes and the flatness of the disks. Each of these broad classes contains about 1/3 of the total sample. Using strict criteria for selecting pure bulgeless galaxies leads to a fraction of 15% of simple disk galaxies. We compare this fraction to other galaxy catalogs and find an excellent agreement of the observed frequency of bulgeless galaxies. Although the fraction of simple disk galaxies in this study does not represent a “cosmic” fraction of bulgeless galaxies, it shows that the relative abundance of pure disks is comparable to other studies and offers a profound value of the frequency of simple disks in the local Universe. This fraction of simple disks emphasizes the challenge for formation and evolution models of disk galaxies since these models are hard pressed to explain the observed frequency of these objects (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The ultraviolet–optical colour magnitude diagram of rich galaxy groups is characterised by a well developed Red Sequence, a Blue Cloud and the so-called Green Valley. Loose, less evolved groups of galaxies which are probably not virialised yet may lack a well defined Red Sequence. This is actually explained in the framework of galaxy evolution. We are focussing on understanding galaxy migration towards the Red Sequence, checking for signatures of such a transition in their photometric and morphological properties. We report on the ultraviolet properties of a sample of early-type (ellipticals+S0s) galaxies inhabiting the Red Sequence. The analysis of their structures, as derived by fitting a Sérsic law to their ultraviolet luminosity profiles, suggests the presence of an underlying disk. This is the hallmark of dissipation processes that still must have a role to play in the evolution of this class of galaxies. Smooth particle hydrodynamic simulations with chemo-photometric implementations able to match the global properties of our targets are used to derive their evolutionary paths through ultraviolet–optical colour magnitude diagrams, providing some fundamental information such as the crossing time through the Green Valley, which depends on their luminosity. The transition from the Blue Cloud to the Red Sequence takes several Gyrs, being about 3–5 Gyr for the brightest galaxies and longer for fainter ones, if occurring. The photometric study of nearby galaxy structures in the ultraviolet is seriously hampered by either the limited field of view of the cameras (e.g., in Hubble Space Telescope) or by the low spatial resolution of the images (e.g., in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer). Current missions equipped with telescopes and cameras sensitive to ultraviolet wavelengths, such as Swift-UVOT and Astrosat-UVIT, provide a relatively large field of view and a better resolution than the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. More powerful ultraviolet instruments (size, resolution and field of view) are obviously bound to yield fundamental advances in the accuracy and depth of the surface photometry and in the characterisation of the galaxy environment.  相似文献

The problem of determining the pattern of gas motions in the central regions of disk spiral galaxies is considered. Two fundamentally different cases—noncircular motions in the triaxial bar potential and motions in circular orbits but with orientation parameters different from those of the main disk—are shown to have similar observational manifestations in the line-of-sight velocity field of the gas. A reliable criterion is needed for the observational data to be properly interpreted. To find such a criterion, we analyze two-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamic models of gas motions in barred disk galaxies. The gas line-of-sight velocity and surface brightness distributions in the plane of the sky are constructed for various inclinations of the galactic plane to the line of sight and bar orientation angles. We show that using models of circular motions for inclinations i>60° to analyze the velocity field can lead to the erroneous conclusions of a “tilted (polar) disk” at the galaxy center. However, it is possible to distinguish bars from tilted disks by comparing the mutual orientations of the photometric and dynamical axes. As an example, we consider the velocity field of the ionized gas in the galaxy NGC 972.  相似文献

We describe the results of our spectroscopy for a sample of barred galaxies whose inner regions exhibit an isophotal twist commonly interpreted as a secondary bar. The line-of-sight velocity fields of the ionized gas and stars and the light-of-sight velocity dispersion fields of the stars were constructed from two-dimensional spectroscopy with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. We detected various types of noncircular motions of ionized gas: radial flows within large-scale bars, counterrotation of the gas and stars at the center of NGC 3945, a polar gaseous disk in NGC 5850, etc. Our analysis of the optical and near-infrared galaxy images (both ground-based and those from the Hubble Space Telescope) revealed circumnuclear minispirals in five objects. The presence of an inner (secondary) bar in the galaxy images is shown to have no effect on the circumnuclear kinematics of the gas and stars. Thus, contrary to popular belief, the secondary bar is not a dynamically decoupled galactic structure. We conclude that the so-called double-barred galaxies are not a separate type of galaxy but are a combination of objects with distinctly different morphologies of their circumnuclear regions.  相似文献

We use an automatic algorithm to fit two-dimensional bulge and disk surface brightness profiles to a sample of 200 Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR) galaxies of known redshift and brighter than r=16. The bulge-to-disk (B/D) luminosity ratios can be combined with an estimate of the galaxy's local environment to address a number of key issues that are central to our understanding of galaxy formation:– How do B/D ratios depend upon galaxy luminosity?– What are the disk and spheroid luminosity functions for field galaxies?– How does the total luminosity in bulges and disks depend on environment?  相似文献
