We present the Galactic model parameters for thin disc estimated by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data of 14 940 stars with apparent magnitudes 16 < g0  21 in six intermediate latitude fields in the first Galactic quadrant. Star/galaxy separation was performed by using the SDSS photometric pipeline and the isodensity contours in the (g  r)0  (r  i)0 two colour diagram. The separation of thin disc stars is carried out by the bimodal distribution of stars in the (g  r)0 histogram, and the absolute magnitudes were evaluated by a procedure presented in the literature (Bilir, S., Karaali, S., Tunçel, S. 2005. AN 326, 321). Exponential density law fits better to the derived density functions for the absolute magnitude intervals 8 < M(g)  9 and 11 < M(g)  12, whereas sech/sech2 laws are more appropriate for absolute magnitude intervals 9 < M(g)  10 and 10 < M(g)  11. We showed that the scaleheight and scalelength are Galactic longitude dependent. The average values and ranges of the scaleheight and the scalelength are 〈H = 220 pc (196  H  234 pc) and 〈H = 1900 pc (1561  h  2280 pc) respectively. This result would be useful to explain different numerical values claimed for those parameters obtained by different authors for the fields in different directions of the Galaxy.  相似文献

We present an analysis of UBVRI data from the selected area SA 141. By applying recalibrated methods of measuring ultraviolet excess (UVX), we approximate abundances and absolute magnitudes for 368 stars over 1.3 deg2 out to distances over 10 kpc. With the density distribution constrained from our previous photometric parallax investigations and with sufficient accounting for the metallicity bias in the UVX method, we are able to compare the vertical abundance distribution to those measured in previous studies. We find that the abundance distribution has an underlying uniform component consistent with previous spectroscopic results that posit a monometallic thick disc and halo with abundances of  [Fe/H]=−0.8  and −1.4, respectively. However, there are a number of outlying data points that may indicate contamination by more metal-rich halo streams. The absence of vertical abundance gradients in the Galactic stellar populations and the possible presence of interloping halo streams would be consistent with expectations from merger models of Galaxy formation. We find that our UVX method has limited sensitivity in exploring the metallicity distribution of the distant Galactic halo, owing to the poor constraint on the UBV properties of very metal-poor stars. The derivation of metallicities from broad-band UBV photometry remains fundamentally sound for the exploration of the halo but is in need of both improved calibration and superior data.  相似文献

We parametrized the total structure of the Galaxy in cylindrical coordinates up to z ∼ 10 kpc by using radial and vertical exponentials, covering the thin and thick disc and the inner spheroid. However, we allowed the scale height and scale length to vary continuously with distance from the Galactic plane. The standard deviations for the differences between stellar space densities estimated by means of the newly defined scale heights and scale lengths and the observed space densities for three absolute magnitude intervals, 5 < M (g ′) ≤ 6, 6 < M (g ′) ≤ 7, and 7 < M (g ′) ≤ 8, of the fields SA 114, ELAIS, and # 0952+5245 are rather small. The uncertainties of the scale heights are also small, indicating that this parameter depends very sensitively on the distance from the Galactic plane, whereas those of the scale lengths are larger. We analyse a sample of 507 evolved (OH/IR) stars in the region (10°>ℓ>−45°), (| b |<3°). We derive average ages for subsets of this sample, and use those sets as beacons for the evolution of the Galaxy. In the bulge, the oldest OH/IR stars in the plane are 7.5 Gyr (1.3 M), and in the disc 2.7 Gyr (2.3 M). The vertical distribution of almost all AGB stars in the disc is found to be nearly exponential, with scaleheight increasing from 100 pc for stars ≲1 Gyr old to 500 pc for stars ≳5 Gyr old. There may be a small, disjunct population of OH/IR stars. The radial distribution of AGB stars is dictated by the metallicity gradient. Unequivocal morphological evidence is presented for the existence of a central bar, but parameters can be constrained only for a given spatial-density model. Using a variety of indicators, we identify the radii of the inner ultraharmonic (2.5 kpc) and corotation resonance (3.5 kpc). We show that the 3-kpc arm is likely to be an inner ring, as observed in other barred galaxies, by identifying a group of evolved stars that is connected to the 3-kpc H  i filament. Also, using several observed features, we argue that an inner-Lindblad resonance exists, at ∼1–1.5 kpc. The compositions of OH/IR populations within 1 kpc of the Galactic Centre give insight into the bar-driven evolution of the inner regions. We suggest that the bar is ∼8 Gyr old, relatively weak (SAB), and may be in a final stage of its existence.  相似文献

The structure of the Galactic bar   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present a deep near-infrared wide-angle photometric analysis of the structure of the inner Galactic bar and central disc. The presence of a triaxial structure at the centre of the Galaxy is confirmed, consistent with a bar inclined at  22°± 55  from the Sun—Galactic Centre line, extending to approximately 2.5 kpc from the Galactic Centre and with a rather small axis ratio. A feature at  ℓ=−98  not aligned with this triaxiality suggests the existence of a second structure in the inner Galaxy, a double triaxiality or an inner ring. We argue that this is likely to be the signature of the end of the Galactic bar, at approximately 2.5–3 kpc, which is circumscribed by an inner pseudo-ring. No thick dust lane preceding the bar is detected and a hole in the dust distribution of the disc inside the bar radius is inferred.  相似文献

We interpret the de‐reddened UBV data for the field SA 133 to deduce the stellar density and metallicity distribution functions. The logarithmic local space density for giants, D*(0) = 6.40, and the agreement of the luminosity function for dwarfs and sub‐giants with the one of Hipparcos confirms the empirical method used for their separation. The metallicity distribution for dwarfs gives a narrow peak at [Fe/H] = +0.13 dex, due to apparently bright limiting magnitude, Vo = 16.5, whereas late‐type giants extending up to z ∼ 4.5 kpc from the galactic plane have a multimodal distribution. The metallicity distribution for giants gives a steep gradient d[Fe/H]/dz = –0.75 dex kpc–1 for thin disk and thick disk whereas a smaller value for the halo, i.e. d[Fe/H]/dz = –0.45 dex kpc–1. We present and analyse the kinematics and orbits for a sample of 488 open clusters (OCs) in the Galaxy. The velocity ellipsoid for our present sample is derived as  (σ U , σ V , σ W ) = (28.7, 15.8, 11.0) km s−1  which represents a young thin-disc population. We also confirm that the velocity dispersions increase with the age of a cluster subsample. The orbits of OCs are calculated with three Galactic gravitational potential models. The errors of orbital parameters are also calculated considering the intrinsic variation of the orbital parameters and the effects of observational uncertainties. The observational uncertainties dominate the errors of derived orbital parameters. The vertical motions of clusters calculated using different Galactic disc models are rather different. The observed radial metallicity gradient of clusters is derived with a slope of   b =−0.070 ± 0.011   dex kpc−1. The radial metallicity gradient of clusters based on their apogalactic distances is also derived with a slope of   b =−0.082 ± 0.014   dex kpc−1. The distribution of derived orbital eccentricities for OCs is very similar to that derived for the field population of dwarfs and giants in the thin disc.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of the first 2MASS (The Two Micron All Sky Survey) sampler data as observed at lower Galactic latitude in our Galaxy. These new near-infrared data provide insight into the structure of the thin disk of our Galaxy, The interpretation of star counts and color distributions of stars in the near-infrared with the synthetic stellar population model, gives strong evidence that the Galactic thin disk density scale length,h R , is rather short (2.7 ± 0.1 kpc).  相似文献

We consider the questions of whether the damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA absorbers in quasar spectra differ intrinsically in metallicity, and whether they could arise in galaxies of different masses. Using the recent measurements of the robust metallicity indicators Zn and S in DLAs and sub-DLAs, we confirm that sub-DLAs have higher mean metallicities than DLAs, especially at z ? 2. We find that the intercept of the metallicity-redshift relation derived from Zn and S is higher than that derived from Fe by 0.5–0.6 dex. We also show that, while there is a correlation between the metallicity and the rest equivalent width of Mg II λ2796 or Fe II λ2599 for DLAs, no correlation is seen for sub-DLAs. Given this, and the similar Mg II or Fe II selection criteria employed in the discovery of both types of systems at lower redshifts, the difference between metallicities of DLAs and sub-DLAs appears to be real and not an artefact of selection. This conclusion is supported by our simulations of Mg II λ2796 and Fe II λ2599 lines for a wide range of physical conditions. On examining the velocity spreads of the absorbers, we find that sub-DLAs show somewhat higher mean and median velocity spreads (Δv), and an excess of systems with Δv > 150 km s?1, than DLAs. Compared to DLAs, the [Mn/Fe] vs. [Zn/H] trend for sub-DLAs appears to be steeper and closer to the trend for Galactic bulge and thick disk stars, possibly suggesting different stellar populations. The absorber data appear to be consistent with galaxy down-sizing. The data are also consistent with the relative number densities of low-mass and high-mass galaxies. It is thus plausible that sub-DLAs arise in more massive galaxies on average than DLAs.  相似文献

High signal-to-noise ratio spectra were obtained of 10 high-proper-motion stars having  −1 ≲[Fe/H] < 0  , and a comparable number of disc stars. All but two of the high-proper-motion stars were confirmed to have  [Fe/H] > −1.0  , some approaching solar metallicity, but, even so, earlier measurements overestimated the metallicities and velocities of some of these stars. Models of stellar populations were used to assign membership probabilities to the Galactic components to which the high-velocity stars might belong. Many were found to be more probably thick-disc than halo objects, despite their large space motions, and two might be associated with the inner Galaxy. It may be necessary to reassess contamination of previous halo samples, such as those used to define the metallicity distribution, to account for contamination by high-velocity thick-disc stars, and to consider possible subcomponents of the halo.
The change in [α/Fe] ratios at  [Fe/H]≃−1.0  is often used to constrain the degree and timing of Type Ia supernova nucleosynthesis in Galactic chemical-evolution models. [Ti/Fe] values were measured for eight of the high-velocity stars. Both high- and low-[Ti/Fe] halo stars exist; likewise high- and low-[Ti/Fe] thick-disc stars exist. We conclude that the [Ti/Fe]'break' is not well defined for a given population; nor is there a simple, continuous evolutionary sequence through the break. Implications for the interpretation of the [α/Fe] break in terms of SN Ia time-scales and progenitors are discussed. The range of [Ti/Fe] found for high -velocity (low rotation) thick-disc stars contrasts with that for the low -velocity (high rotation) thick-disc sample studied by Prochaska et al.  相似文献

We present CCD photometry in the Washington system C and T1 passbands down to T1  19.5 magnitudes in the fields of Czernik 26, Czernik 30, and Haffner 11, three poorly studied open clusters located in the third Galactic quadrant. We measured T1 magnitudes and C ? T1 colors for a total of 6472 stars distributed throughout cluster areas of 13.6′ × 13.6′ each. Cluster radii were estimated from star counts in appropriate-sized boxes distributed throughout the entire observed fields. Based on the best fits of isochrones computed by the Padova group to the (C ? T1, T1) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we derived color excesses, heliocentric distances and ages for the three clusters. These are characterized by a relatively small angular size and by a high field star contamination. We performed a firm analysis of the field star contamination of the CMDs and examined different relationships between the position in the Galaxy of known open clusters located within 1 kpc around the three studied ones, their age and their interstellar visual absorption. We confirm previous results in the sense that the closer the cluster birthplace to the Galactic plane, the higher the interstellar visual absorption. We also found that the space velocity dispersion perpendicular to the Galactic plane diminishes as the clusters are younger. The positions, interstellar visual absorptions, ages, and metallicities of the three studied clusters favor the hypothesis that they were not born in the recently discovered Canis major (CMa) dwarf galaxy before it was accreted by the Milky Way.  相似文献

Using reliable trigonometric measurements, we find that the absolute magnitude of cataclysmic variables depends on the orbital period and de-reddened (J  H)0 and (H  K s)0 colours of 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) photometric system. The calibration equation covers the ranges 0.032d < Porb  0.454d, −0.08 < (J  H)0  1.54, −0.03 < (H  Ks)0  0.56 and 2.0 < MJ < 11.7; It is based on trigonometric parallaxes with relative errors of (σπ/π)  0.4. By using the period-luminosity-colours (PLCs) relation, we estimated the distances of cataclysmic variables with orbital periods and 2MASS observations and compared them with distances found from other methods. We suggest that the PLCs relation can be a useful statistical tool to estimate the distances of cataclysmic variables.  相似文献

In this paper, the fourth in a series, we examine again one of the implications of the Lin‐Shu density‐wave theory, specifically, the noncircular systematic motion of the Galactic objects. Our previous investigation is extended by analyzing simultaneously both the line‐of‐sight and transversal velocities of a sample of open clusters for which velocities, distances and ages are available. The ordinary equations of the Oort‐Lindblad theory of galactic differential rotation are used. The minor effects caused by the two‐dimensional tightly‐wound density waves are also taken into account. The published data of 242 currently known optically visible clusters having distances r < 3 kpc from the Sun and ‐200 < z < 200 pc from the Galactic plane, and ages 2 × 108 < t < 2 × 109 yr are collected from Dias et al. (2014), excluding extremely far, high‐velocity, young and old objects in our fitting. The most noteworthy result is the fact that the parameters of Lin–Shu type density waves estimated from two independent line‐of‐sight and transversal along the Galactic longitude velocities are nearly equal. We argue that the resemblance of these Galactic wave structures is so remarkable that no doubt is felt as to the theory's truth with respect to these data. The results obtained allow us to conclude that several low‐m trailing density‐wave patterns with different number of spiral arms m (say, m = 1, 2, 3, and 4), pitch angles (about 5°, 8°, 11°, and 14°, respectively) and amplitudes of the perturbed gravitational potential may coexist in the Galaxy. The latter suggests the asymmetric multiarm, not well‐organized (“flocculent”) spiral structure of the system. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A comparison is made between the age–metallicity relations obtained from four different types of studies: F and G stars in the solar neighbourhood, analysis of open clusters, galactic structure studies with the stellar population synthesis technique and chemical evolution models. Metallicities of open clusters are corrected for the effects of the radial gradient, which we find to be −0.09 dex kpc−1 and most likely constant in time. We do not correct for the vertical gradient, because its existence and value are not firmly established.
Stars and clusters trace a similar age–metallicity relation, showing an excess of rather metal-rich objects in the age range 5–9 Gyr. Galactic structure studies tend to give a more metal-poor relation than chemical evolution models. Neither relation explains the presence of old, relatively metal-rich stars and clusters. This might be caused by uncertainties in the ages of the local stars, or pre-enrichment of the disc with material from the bulge, possibly as a result of a merger event in the early phases of the formation of our Galaxy.  相似文献

The ejection of the gas out of the disc in late-type galaxies is related to star formation and is due mainly to Type II supernovae. In this paper, we studied in detail the development of the Galactic fountains in order to understand their dynamical evolution and their influence on the redistribution of the freshly delivered metals over the disc. To this aim, we performed a number of 3D hydrodynamical radiative cooling simulations of the gas in the Milky Way where the whole Galaxy structure, the Galactic differential rotation and the supernova explosions generated by a single OB association are considered. A typical fountain powered by 100 Type II supernovae may eject material up to ∼2 kpc which than collapses back mostly in the form of dense, cold clouds and filaments. The majority of the gas lifted up by the fountains falls back on the disc remaining within a radial distance  Δ R = 0.5 kpc  from the place where the fountain originated. This localized circulation of disc gas does not influence the radial chemical gradients on large scale, as required by the chemical models of the Milky Way which reproduce the metallicity distribution without invoking large fluxes of metals. Simulations of multiple fountains fuelled by Type II supernovae of different OB associations will be presented in a companion paper.  相似文献

A new method to measure the epicycle frequency κ in the Galactic disc is presented. We make use of the large data base on open clusters completed by our group to derive the observed velocity vector (amplitude and direction) of the clusters in the Galactic plane. In the epicycle approximation, this velocity is equal to the circular velocity given by the rotation curve, plus a residual or perturbation velocity, of which the direction rotates as a function of time with the frequency κ. Due to the non-random direction of the perturbation velocity at the birth time of the clusters, a plot of the present-day direction angle of this velocity as a function of the age of the clusters reveals systematic trends from which the epicycle frequency can be obtained. Our analysis considers that the Galactic potential is mainly axis-symmetric, or in other words, that the effect of the spiral arms on the Galactic orbits is small; in this sense, our results do not depend on any specific model of the spiral structure. The values of κ that we obtain provide constraints on the rotation velocity of the disc; in particular, V 0 is found to be  230 ± 15 km s−1  even if the short scale  ( R 0= 7.5 kpc)  of the Galaxy is adopted. The measured κ at the solar radius is  43 ± 5 km s−1 kpc −1  . The distribution of initial velocities of open clusters is discussed.  相似文献

The dynamics of the dwarf-spheroidal (dSph) galaxies in the gravitational field of the Galaxy is investigated with particular reference to their susceptibility to tidal break-up. Based on the observed paucity of the dSphs at small Galactocentric distances, we put forward the hypothesis that subsequent to the formation of the Milky Way and its satellites, those dSphs that had orbits with small perigalacticons were tidally disrupted, leaving behind a population that now has a relatively larger value of its average perigalacticon to apogalacticon ratio and consequently a larger value of its r.m.s. transverse to radial velocities ratio compared to their values at the time of formation of the dSphs. We analyze the implications of this hypothesis for the phase space distribution of the dSphs and that of the dark matter (DM) halo of the Galaxy within the context of a self-consistent model in which the functional form of the phase space distribution of DM particles follows the King model, i.e. the ‘lowered isothermal’ distribution and the potential of the Galaxy is determined self-consistently by including the gravitational cross-coupling between visible matter and DM particles. This analysis, coupled with virial arguments, yields an estimate of ≳270 km s−1 for the circular velocity of any test object at galactocentric distances of ∼100 kpc, the typical distances of the dSphs. The corresponding self-consistent values of the relevant DM halo model parameters, namely, the local (i.e., the solar neighbourhood) values of the DM density and velocity dispersion in the King model and its truncation radius, are estimated to be ∼0.3 GeV cm−3, >350 km s−1 and ≳150 kpc, respectively. Similar self-consistent studies with other possible forms of the DM distribution function will be useful in assessing the robustness of our estimates of the Galaxy’s DM halo parameters.  相似文献

We present near-infrared colour–magnitude diagrams and star counts for a number of regions along the Galactic plane. It is shown that along the l =27°, b =0° line of sight there is a feature at 5.7±0.7 kpc with a density of stars at least a factor of 2 and probably more than a factor of 5 times that of the disc at the same position. This feature forms a distinct clump on an H versus J − H diagram and is seen at all longitudes from the bulge to about l =28°, but at no longitude greater than this. The distance to the feature at l =20° is about 0.5 kpc further than at l =27°, and by l =10° it has merged with, or has become, the bulge. Given that at l =27° and l =21° there is also a clustering of very young stars, the only component that can reasonably explain what is seen is a bar with half-length of around 4 kpc and a position angle of about 43°±7°.  相似文献

The combination of dispersion measures of pulsars, distances from the model of Cordes & Lazio (2002) and emission measures from the WHAM survey enabled a statistical study of electron densities and filling factors of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in the Milky Way. The emission measures were corrected for absorption and contributions from beyond the pulsar distance. For a sample of 157 pulsars at |b | > 5. and 60° < ℓ < 360°, located in mainly interarm regions within about 3 kpc from the Sun, we find that: (1) The average volume filling factor along the line of sight and the mean density in ionized clouds are inversely correlated: ( ) = (0.0184 ± 0.0011) –1.07 ± 0.03 for the ranges 0.03 < < 2 cm–3 and 0.8 > > 0.01. This relationship is very tight. The inverse correlation of and causes the well‐known constancy of the average electron density along the line of sight. As (z ) increases with distance from the Galactic plane |z |, the average size of the ionized clouds increases with |z |. (2) For |z| < 0.9 kpc the local density in clouds n c(z ) and local filling factor f (z ) are inversely correlated because the local electron density n e(z ) = f (z )n c(z ) is constant. We suggest that f (z ) reaches a maximum value of >0.3 near |z | = 0.9 kpc, whereas n c(z ) continues to decrease to higher |z |, thus causing the observed flattening in the distribution of dispersion measures perpendicular to the Galactic plane above this height. (3) For |z | < 0.9 kpc the local distributions n c(z ), f (z ) and (z ) have the same scale height which is in the range 250 < h ≲ 500 pc. (4) The average degree of ionization of the warm atomic gas (z ) increases towards higher |z | similarly to (z ). Towards |z | = 1 kpc, (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.05 and (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.02. Near |z | = 1 kpc most of the warm, atomic hydrogen is ionized. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献
