A direct method for determining electron densities from emission line intensities of ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence is described and then applied to the analysis of extreme ultraviolet Ciii and Ov spectra from both quiet and active areas in the solar transition region. The results are consistent with a value of N e T e = 6 × 1014 cm-3K for the quiet Sun at temperatures of 5 × 104 to 3 × 105K. Electron densities are approximately five times greater in active regions than in the quiet Sun.  相似文献

Using the maximum entropy method (MEM), the cosmic-ray power spectral density in the frequency range 3 × 10–9–2 × 10–7 Hz has been estimated for the period 1947–1990. Cosmic-ray intensity data were integrated from the ion chamber at Huancayo and the neutron monitor at Deep River, following the method of Nagashima and Morishita (1980). The estimated spectrum shows power-law dependence (f –1.62), with several peaks superimposed. Periodicities of the different peaks are identified and related to solar activity phenomena; most of them were reported in the past. Once the 11-yr variation is eliminated, the most prominent feature in the spectrum is a variation, not reported before, with a period of 1.68 yr (604.8 d). This peak is correlated with fluctuations of similar periodicities found in the southern coronal hole area and in large active regions. The importance that this variation may have to elucidate the solar magnetic flux emergence and the activity cycle is discussed.Deceased 10 April, 1995.  相似文献

New results concerning prominence observations and in particular the prominence–corona transition region (PCTR) are presented. In order to cover a temperature range from 2 × 104 to 7 × 105 K, several emission lines in many different ionization states were observed with SUMER and CDS on board SOHO. EM and DEM were measured through the whole PCTR. We compared the prominence DEM with the DEM from other solar structures (active region, coronal hole and the chromosphere–corona transition region (CCTR)). We notice a displacement of the prominence DEM minimum towards lower temperatures with respect to the minimum of the other structures. Electron density and pressure diagnostics have been made from the observed C III lines. Local electron density and pressure for T ∼ 7 × 104 K are respectively log N e = 9.30−0.34 +0.30 and 0.0405−0.014 +0.012. Extrapolations over the entire PCTR temperature range are in good agreement with previous SOHO results (Madjarska et al., 1999). We also provide values of electron density and pressure in two different regions of the prominence (center and edge). The Doppler velocity in the PCTR shows a trend to increase with temperature (at least up to 30 km s -1 at T ∼ 7 × 104 K), an indication of important mass flows. A simple morphological model is proposed from density and motion diagnostics. If the prominence is taken as a magnetic flux tube, one can derive an opening of the field lines with increasing temperature. If the prominence is represented as a collection of threads, their number increases with temperature from 20 to 800. Derived filling factors can reach values as low as 10−3 for a layer thickness of the order of 5000 km. The variation of non-thermal velocities is determined for the first time, in the temperature range from 2 × 104 to 7 × 105 K. The quite clear similarity with the CCTR non-thermal velocities would indicate that heating mechanisms in the PCTR could be the same as in the CCTR (wave propagation, turbulence MHD).  相似文献

3He is an intermediate product in the proton-proton chain, and standard models of the Sun predict a large bulge of enhanced 3He abundance near M r /M 0 = 0.6 in the contemporary Sun. The relatively low abundance of 3He at the solar surface, which is derived from solar wind observations, poses severe constraints to non-standard solar models.Direct measurements of the 3He abundance in the solar atmosphere are extremely difficult, whereas indirect measurements, e.g., in the solar wind, have been performed with considerable precision. The interpretation of solar wind observations with respect to solar surface abundances has been greatly improved in recent years. Abundance measurements have been performed under a large variety of solar wind conditions and refined models have been developed for the transport processes in the chromosphere and the transition region and for the processes occurring in the solar corona. From these measurements we estimate the present isotopic number ratio 3He/4He to be (4.1 ± 1.0) × 10–4 at the solar surface, corresponding to the weight abundance X 3 = (9.0 ± 2.4) × 10–5. The zero-age Main-Sequence abundance of 3He (after burning of D) might have been slightly lower (by about 10 to 20%) than the present-day value.Non-standard solar models involving mild turbulent diffusion (Lebreton and Maeder, 1987) could account for a slow secular increase of the 3He/4He ratio in the solar atmosphere. On the other hand it is difficult to reconcile models with severe mass loss as proposed by Guzik, Willson, and Brunish (1987) with this constraint. The slowing down of the solar rotation during the early Main-Sequence evolution was accompanied by stronger differential rotation probably implying a more effective mixing of the inner parts. Again, the surface abundance of 3He imposes severe limits on the evolution of the distribution of momentum within the early Sun.  相似文献

The hydrodynamics of stellar models in the tidal field of a massive black hole is calculated numerically under certain simplifying assumptions. It is found that solar type stars are totally disrupted only when falling toward a black hole whose mass does not exceed 106–107 M . Red giants lose their entire envelope for all black hole masses studied. Our findings strengthen the view that tidal disruption is not an important source of gas in AGN's.  相似文献

In this paper, we have used optical intra-day variability archive data to calculate the central black hole masses and Eddington luminosities for nine blazars: 3C 66A, AO 0235+164, S5 0716+714, PKS 0735+178, OJ 287, 1215+303, 1216−010, 1308+326, PKS 1510−089, Mrk 501 and BL Lac using intra-day variability timescales and periodicity (if present). The calculated central black hole mass of these nine blazars using intra-day variability timescales are found to be in the range of 1.22-25.30 × 107 M and corresponding Eddington luminosity in the range of 1.58-32.88 × 1045 erg s−1. The black hole mass and Eddington luminosity are in the range of 0.32-31.23 × 108 M and 1.23-31.20 × 1046 erg s−1, respectively when optical Doppler factor is taken into account. The comparison show, our estimated values of black hole mass are consistent with earlier reported values. Periodicity were present in two blazars OJ 287 and 1216−010 which give the central black hole mass of these blazars in the range of 1.32-14.6 × 107 M and corresponding Eddington luminosity in the range of 1.60-19.0 × 1045 erg s−1, respectively.  相似文献

BF3 counters on OSO-1 were used to look for solar neutrons by trying to observe a diurnal variation in count rate. No effect was observed and an upper limit was placed on the solar neutron flux at the earth of J n < 2 × 10–3 neut/cm2/sec of 10 keV < E n < 10 meV for the period March to May 1962. No proton-producing flares occurred during this time, so the most obvious source of solar neutrons could not be studied. The emulsion experiment of Apparao et al., flown during this period, which seemed to indicate solar neutrons has probably been misinterpreted.  相似文献

Comet outburst activity and the structure of solar wind streams were compared on the basis of Pioneer 10, 11, Vela 3 and IMP 7, 8 measurements at the heliocentric distance r ≈ 1–6 AU. It is shown that the solar wind velocity waves which are evolving into corotating shock waves beyond the Earth orbit may be responsible for comet outburst activity. The correlation between variations of comet outburst activity with heliocentric distance and the behavior of the solar wind velocity waves is established. The closeness of the characteristic times for the velocity waves and comet outburst activity (7–8 days at r = 1 AU) as well as the simultaneous growth of both the characteristic times with r are noted. The observed distribution of the comet outburst activity parameters during the 11-year cycle is also in good agreement with the phase distributions during the 11-year cycle of variations of the coronal hole areas and the rate of change of the sunspot area δS p.  相似文献

A model of the solar corona and wind is developed which includes for the first time the heating and acceleration effects of high-frequency Alfvén waves in the frequency range between 1 Hz and 1 kHz. The waves are assumed to be generated by the small-scale magnetic activity in the chromospheric network. The wave dissipation near the gyro-frequency, which decreases with increasing solar distance, leads to strong coronal heating. The resulting heating function is different from other artificial heating functions used in previous model calculations. The associated thermal pressure-gradient force and wave pressure-gradient force together can accelerate the wind to high velocities, such as those observed by Helios and Ulysses. Classical Coulomb heat conduction is also considered and turns out to play a role in shaping the temperature profiles of the heated protons. The time-dependent two-fluid (electrons and protons) model equations and the time-dependent wave-spectrum equation are numerically integrated versus solar distance out to about 0.3 AU. The solutions finally converge and settle on time-stationary profiles which are discussed in detail. The model computations can be made to fit the observed density profiles of a polar coronal hole and polar plume with the sonic point occurring at 2.4 R and 3.2 R , respectively. The solar wind speeds obtained at 63 R are 740 km s-1 and 540 km s-1; the mass flux is 2.1 and 2.2 × 108 cm-2 s-1 (normalized to 1 AU), respectively. The proton temperature increases from a value of 4 × 105 K at the lower boundary to 2 × 106 K in the corona near 2 R .  相似文献

Neutron star models are calculated using an equation of state discussed in an earlier paper. A maximum mass for a neutron star of 1.74 solar masses is found. The central density of thie star is 3.3×1015 g/cm3. The lightest stars have masses of 0.02 (resp. 0.03) solar masses with central densities 2.2×1014 g/cm3 (resp. 1.9×1014).  相似文献

A 21 cm absorption measurement over a long path length free of the effects of differential galactic rotation indicates the existence of two distinct cloud populations in the plane. One of them consisting of cold, dense clouds has been well studied before. The newly found hot clouds appear to be at least five times more numerous. They have a spin temperature of ~ 300 K, an rms velocity of ~ 35 km s-1, twice the total mass, and hundred times the kinetic energy of the cold clouds. Over long path lengths, the hot clouds haveN H/kpc ~ 2 X 1021 cm-2 Kpc-1, and are estimated to have individual column densities ≤ 1020 cm-2. We propose that they are shocked clouds found only within supernova bubbles and that the cold clouds are found in the regions in-between old remnants, immersed in an intercloud medium. We conclude that the solar neighbourhood must be located between old supernova remnants rather than within one.  相似文献

Identifications are proposed for twenty of the twenty-eight coronal lines observed in the spectra obtained during a rocket flight into the path of the 7 March, 1970 solar eclipse. The methods by which the lines have been identified are discussed. Most of the lines identified are from forbidden transitions between levels in the ground 2p n and 3p n configurations in high ions of magnesium, silicon, sulphur, iron, and nickel. The temperature range represented is from 6.9 × 105 K to 2.5 × 106 K. The classification of three lines of Fexii and two of Nixiv has led to a revised identification for the near ultraviolet 2 D 3/2-2 P 1/2 transition in Fe xii. This transition can be identified with the line at 3072 Å rather than that at 3021 Å as previously suggested in the literature.  相似文献

In this paper we calculate the number of close binaries formed during the evolution process of a globular cluster core. The globular cluster core is assumed to contain a massive black hole at its center. We show that the central black hole can drive binaries formation in the core and the rate of binaries formation depends on the mass of the black hole at its center. When the massM of the black hole is between 102 M and 3×103 M , there will be a few binaries formed. When the mass of the black hole is 4×103 M M6×103 M , the number of binary star formation will suddenly increase with a jump to the maximum value 58. When the mass of the black hole is 7×103 M M9×103 M , the number of binary star will immediately decrease. Whether cluster X-ray is produced mainly by the central black hole or by binaries in the core depends on the mass of the central black hole. Therefore, two cases arise: namely, black hole accretion domination and binaries radiation domination. We do think that we cannot exclude the possibility of the existence of a central black hole even when binary radiation characteristics have been observed in globular cluster X-ray sources.  相似文献

Observations of solar X-ray line emission using crystal spectrometers during a large chromospheric flare have provided a list of wavelengths with a precision of 0.003 Å in first order of diffraction and correspondingly better in higher orders. In addition to the resonance, intersystem (1 1 S 0-2 3 P 1) and forbidden (1 1 S 0-2 3 S 1) transitions of ions of the Hei isoelectronic sequence, we have recorded satellite lines arising from ions in the Lii, Bei and Bi isoelectronic sequences. These satellite features are most prominent in the iron spectrum. Apparent decreases in the ratio of forbidden and intersystem line intensities of Mgxi and Sixiii during the flare are used to derive electron densities possibly as high as 1 × 1013 cm–3 in the Mgxi emitting region and 1 × 1014 cm–3 in the Sixiii region during the event. A search for satellite lines on the long-wavelength side of the Lyman-alpha line of Hi-like ions has yielded no positive identifications.  相似文献

Theoretical populations of the 2s3l levels of Ne vii are presented for electron temperatures from 2.5 × 105 K to 4 × 106 K and electron densities from 108 cm–3 to 1012 cm–3. These, in conjunction with intensities of previously observed solar Ne vii lines and wavelengths and intensities observed in the laboratory, are used to identify further Ne vii lines in the solar spectrum. The dependence on temperature of intensity ratios such as I(2s2p 1 P – 2s3d 1 D)/I(2s2p 3 P – 2s3d 3 D) is demonstrated and the advantages of the small wavelength separation of such lines for solar electron temperature diagnostics are discussed.  相似文献

Numerical integration of particle trajectories is performed to evaluate the statistical acceleration coefficients D TT for 1 to 100 MeV protons in a solar wind corotating interaction region (CIR) seen at 2.5 and 5.0 AU. Acceleration is followed in the solar wind reference frame and is due to random wave-particle interactions and to random drift motion in moderate scale field gradients. D TT due to the first effect reaches a peak value of 4 × 10 –7 MeV2 s–1 post shock at 10 MeV at 2.5 AU consistent with estimates based both upon cyclotron resonance and transit time damping theory. D TT from the second effect is less well established but is of the order of 10–7 MeV2 s–1 at 10 MeV, 5 AU. A comparison is made between the time constant for statistical acceleration within this CIR and estimates for diffuse shock acceleration and adiabatic deceleration. All three time constants are of the same order, but deceleration is faster than shock acceleration which in turn is faster than statistical acceleration.  相似文献

Four series of coronal images have been obtained by the expedition of Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory during the August 11, 1999 total solar eclipse with the help of a photographic mirror–lens polarimeter (D = 100 mm, F = 1000 mm). Each series include three images corresponding to three positions of the polarization analyzer. The position of the solar disk center relative to the Moon's center has been determined beforehand. In addition, the background skylight polarization and intensity are calculated. All measurements are absolute given in units of the Sun's average surface brightness. A new technique for separation of the F- and K-coronae is used. It was found that in the equatorial regions the model of hydrostatic distribution of the density with T = constant is not quite accurate for the August 11, 1999 corona and there is a temperature gradient in this region. For r1 = 1.3R and r2 = 1.8R we derived T1 = 1.25×106 K and T2 = 1.07×106 K, respectively. The average polarization degree in the equatorial regions changes from 10 to 40%, while in the polar regions the maximum value reaches only 10%. The values of electron densities Ne(r) vary from 1.32×108 cm−3 (r = 1.1R) to 2.0×106 cm−3 (r = 2.0R). Our data are compared with previous measurements.  相似文献

At the Sun-Earth distance of one astronomical unit (1 AU), the solar wind is known to be strongly supersonic and super Alfvenic with Mach and Alfven numbers being on average 12 and 9 respectively. Also, solar wind densities (average ∼10cm-3) and velocities (average ∼450kms-1) at 1AU, are known to be inversely correlated with low velocities having higher than average densities andvice versa. However, on May 11 and 12 1999 the Earth was engulfed by an unusually low density (< 0.1cm-3) and low velocity (< 350km s-1) solar wind with an Alfven Mach number significantly less than 1. This was a unique low-velocity, low-density, sub-Alfvénic solar wind flow which spacecraft observations have shown lasted more than 24 hours. One consequence of this extremely tenuous solar wind was a spectacular expansion of the Earth’s magnetosphere and bow shock. The expanding bow shock was observed by several spacecraft and reached record upstream distances of nearly 60 Earth radii, the lunar orbit. The event was so dramatic that it has come to be known asthe solar wind disappearance event. Though extensive studies of this event were made by many authors in the past, it has only been recently shown that the unusual solar wind flows characterizing this event originated from a small coronal hole in the vicinity of a large active region on the Sun. These recent results have put to rest speculation that such events are associated with global phenomenon like the periodic solar polar field reversal that occurs at the maximum of each solar cycle. In this paper we revisit the 11 May 1999 event, look at other disappearance events that have ocurred in the past, examine the reasons why speculations about the association of such events with global phenomena like solar polar field reversals were made and also examine the role of transient coronal holes as a possible solar source for such events.  相似文献

New theoretical emission line ratios for the Be-sequence ions Mgix and Sixi are presented. A comparison with observational data for two solar flares and an active region loop obtained with the Harvard EUV spectrometer and NRL XUV spectroheliograph aboard Skylab reveals that these plasmas are in ionization equilibrium at coronal temperatures. Unfortunately most of the density diagnostics are not particularly useful under solar plasma conditions, as they vary only slightly over the electron density range 108–1013cm–3. However the Sixi ratioI(3 P e 2 -3 P o 2)/I(3 P o 11 S e 0) is density sensitive in the range 108 to 1010cm–3, which is representative of electron densities found in solar active regions or small flares.  相似文献
