Thicklip grey mullet, Chelon labrosus, is an important commercial fish species and has been studied worldwide. However, no recent studies have been made regarding polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in wild C. labrosus. Due to that, the concentration of 13 PCBs congeners was measured in muscles and livers, of males and females, of C. labrosus of different ages, allowing the estimation of PCB bioaccumulation throughout the species lifespan, in the Mondego estuary, a southern European temperate estuary. Male muscle sample concentrations ranged from 32 to 96 ng g 1 (lipid wt.) and in females from 32 to 62 ng g 1 (lipid wt.). In male liver sample concentrations ranged from 106 to 158 ng g 1 (lipid wt.), while female concentrations ranged from 88 to 129 ng g 1 (lipid wt.). The most abundant congeners presenting higher percentages in all samples were CB 138, 153 and 180. No significant differences were found between the concentrations in both sexes, but muscle and liver PCB concentrations in males tended to increase with age whereas in females concentrations remained stable throughout the species lifespan. Significant differences were found between concentrations in muscle and liver.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation and elimination of silver-110 m was investigated in Idothea primastica. The retention of 110mAg in the fecal pellets of Idothea was also investigated. The concentation factor was found to be relatively high (> 103) at equilibrium and the bioaccumulation process was independent of temperature at 10°C and 20°C. It was also found that neither the loss rate from the animals nor the loss rate from fecal pellets were influenced by temperature. However, the loss rate from fecal pellets was significantly greater than that from whole animals. The retention half-times were found to be 130 days for the fecal pellets and 231 days for the animals. The loss rate of 110mAg was higher in seawater than in brackish water.  相似文献

Atomic absorption spectroscopy (flame and graphite furnace techniques) and instrumental neutron activation analysis were used for determining the Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ag, Co, Cr, As, Se, Sb, Ba, Au, and Hg contents in 25 samples of different tissues and whole organisms inhabiting the southern trough in the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California) and in several samples of its bottom waters. It is shown that the habitat environment of this hydrothermal field with high primary production of both photosynthetic and bacterial chemosynthetic origin influences the Fe and Mn ratios in the waters of the microbiotopes and the distribution patterns of the metals in the external and internal organs of the benthic animals. In the dominant specialized taxa, the maximal bioaccumulation of metals is registered both in the organs related to bacterial chemosynthesis such as the trophosome of Vestimentifera Riftia pachyptila and the gills of the vesicomyid clam Archivestica gigas and in other organs. The other organisms such as the mollusks Nuculana grasslei, actinias Paraphelliactis pabista, Actinaria, and Spongia and the crabs Munidopsis alvisca demonstrate high bioaccumulation properties as well. The metal concentration coefficient is highly variable ranging from 10 to 104. The changes in the molar Fe/Mn ratio values imply the partitioning of these two metals in the following migration succession: microbiotope water-external organs-internal organs.  相似文献

Field concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in sediment and nine marine soft bottom invertebrate species. Lipid- and organic carbon normalised biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were determined for 29 nonplanar and 11 coplanar congeners. To investigate whether the bioaccumulation was in thermodynamic equilibrium with the sediment, the determined BSAFs were compared to theoretically calculated ones to obtain a BSAFdet./BSAFtheor-ratio. Large interspecific variations were found: one suspension feeding and one deposit feeding species of brittle stars (Amphiura filiformis and A. chiajei), and one predatory polychaete (Glycera rouxii) had ratios>1 for congeners with logKow>6.5. In these species there was also a linear relationship between logKow and BSAF, both for coplanar and for planar congeners but with lower values for coplanar ones. For other species the pattern was more scattered. Only the deposit feeding polychaete Melinna cristata had BSAFdet./BSAFtheor-ratios<1 for all congeners. Thus, the interspecific variations in bioaccumulation did not correlate with differences in feeding strategies, but may be caused by differences in biotransformation, and in age and size of the analysed specimens.  相似文献

Elimination kinetics of tetra-, penta- and hexachlorobiphenyls (IUPAC Nos. 44, 52, 87, 95, 101, 153) were investigated by laboratory experiments in three species of different phyla: Nereis diversicolor (Polychaeta), Palaemon longirostris (Crustacea) and Platichthys flesus (Pisces). Half-lives were species-specific and structure-dependent. Palaemon longirostris eliminated all components fastest. N. diversicolor was faster than Platichthys flesus except for components 95 and 153. Contrary to the fish species, the two invertebrates contained significant amounts of polar transformation products of No. 52, which had been applied as 14C labelled. Therefore, the faster elimination by Palaemon longirostris and N. diversicolor was assumed to be generally due to increased biotransformation. Elimination was in accordance with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) residue patterns obtained from field samples of the species. Congeners with vicinal H atoms in m,p positions were under-represented in Palaemon longirostris and so were congeners with > or = 7 Cl in N. diversicolor, while the PCB residue pattern in Platichthys flesus was similar to that of Clophen A60. By comparing percentages of the experimental congeners in sigma PCB and their elimination half-lives in the three species, it was revealed that residue patterns were also influenced by species-dependent uptake, e.g. feeding habits. Extractable organic matter-based sigma PCB levels increased with trophic levels of the three species.  相似文献

The risk of bioaccumulation of persistent liposoluble pollutants in marine food chains was highlighted by work done on organochlorine residues in marine organisms in the early 1960s. In one study, concentrations of DDE and dieldrin were determined in species from different trophic levels of the Farne Island ecosystem.1 Concentrations of pollutants were related to trophic levels, with the highest levels occurring in predators such as the cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and the shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis). This paper will consider model systems which may be used to predict bioaccumulation risks from simple in vitro data. Emphasis will be upon persistent liposoluble pollutants with relatively simple patterns of metabolism, and upon the problem of bioaccumulation by marine predators.  相似文献

Brain, liver and muscle samples from seven male beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, from Hendrickson Island in the Canadian Arctic (n=3) and the St. Lawrence River estuary (n=4), were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other organochlorine (OC) compounds to determine whether there are differences in the distribution of these contaminants in beluga tissues and between geographic locations. Wet weight concentrations of ΣPCB, ΣDDT, Σchlordane and mirex were significantly higher (p<0.05) in St. Lawrence samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the PCB and OC data indicated that contaminant profiles in belugas from the St. Lawrence reflect point-source inputs of these compounds while Arctic samples appear to be dominated by PCB congeners and OC compounds subject to long-range transport and deposition. Discriminant functions analysis of the contaminant data for the brain, liver and muscle tissues indicated that the distributions of OC compounds in the liver and muscle tissues were very similar, while brain samples could be distinguished from other tissues by differences in PCB congener patterns and higher concentrations of Σhexachlorocyclohexane (ΣHCH), primarily αHCH.  相似文献

Selective accumulation of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCB congeners was investigated in beluga (Delphinapterus leucas), narwhal (Monodon monoceros) and several species at the same trophic level in two areas of Canada. There was a much higher relative abundance of meta-para-unsubstituted PCBs in the cetaceans compared with other species. This suggests that activity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase enzymes causing CYP2B-type metabolism was relatively low in beluga and narwhal. Lower relative levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD occurred in beluga from both areas, and selective reduction of toxic non-ortho PCBs occurred in the highly PCB-contaminated St Lawrence beluga. These compounds are potent inducers of cytochrome P450 CYP 1A-type enzymes, suggesting that such an enzyme with the capability of metabolizing TCDD-like substrates is present in beluga and narwhal. SIMCA principal components analysis of PCB congener patterns showed that the two cetaceans were in a statistically significant different class than the other species. Variables (congeners) with the greatest separation power between classes were mainly those defined by the selective metabolism rules.  相似文献

Over 50 seawater samples from two different sites—Barcelona (Spain) and Banyuls-sur-Mer (France)—were analyzed in order to study the extent and postulate the processes driving the enrichment of hydrophobic organic pollutants in the sea surface microlayer (SML). A number of individual polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (41) were measured to study their partitioning between the particulate (fraction > 0.7 μm) and the dissolved + colloidal phases (fraction < 0.7 μm), with the latter being differentiated into estimated dissolved and colloidal phases. In addition, several organochlorine pesticides were also measured, namely, HCB, α-HCH, γ-HCH, 4,4′-DDE, 4,4′-DDD and 4,4′-DDT. The presence of PCB congener profiles found in the SML suggests a dynamic coupling with the atmosphere in Banyuls sampling site, whereas offshore Barcelona the presence of highly chlorinated congeners was due to persistent sediment resuspension. The average PCB concentration in the SML dissolved + colloidal phase were higher in Banyuls (7.8 ng L 1) than in Barcelona (3.6 ng L 1) samples, but in the particulate phase concentrations were higher in Barcelona (3.2 ng L 1) to that of Banyuls (1.4 ng L 1). However, PCB concentrations in the SML generally also showed large variability. Enrichment factors of PCBs and other organochlorine compounds in the SML with respect to the underlying water column ranged from 0.2 to 7.4. This may be explained for both the dissolved + colloidal and particulate phases by the enrichment in the SML of organic carbon (OC) as discerned from particle–water and colloid–water partitioning.  相似文献

Organochlorine concentrations were measured in white-sided dolphins, pilot whales, and their prey from the Gulf of Maine and used to identify species, tissue, and gender differences, and trophic transfer trends, in bioaccumulation. Polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations ([PCB]) in dolphin blubber (13 +/- 7.1 micrograms/g fresh wt.) were twice those in pilot whales, but pesticide concentrations (20 +/- 13 micrograms/g fresh) were similar between species. 4,4'-DDE, trans-non-achlor, Cl6(153) and Cl6(138) concentrations were highest. Skin tissues had more recalcitrant organochlorines than the internal organs. Male dolphins bioaccumulated higher concentrations of nonmetabolizable PCBs and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers, whereas pilot whales had no gender-related differences in bioaccumulation. Pilot whales, mackerel, and herring had proportionately higher concentrations of DDTs, whereas [PCB] were higher in dolphins and squid. Although these odontocetes feed at the same trophic level and store a similar suite of contaminants, dolphins bioaccumulated higher and potentially hazardous 4,4'-DDE and PCB concentrations from food in their more geographically restricted range.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are an important group of environmental pollutants, there being a total of 209 theoretical congeners. Residue analysis of the adipose tissue of five species of fish-eating sea birds from British and Irish coastal waters revealed the presence of up to 60 different congeners. By GC-MS, GC-MSD and high resolution capillary GC-ECD using authentic standards, it was possible to identify and quantify 40 different congeners. Despite the large number of PCB congeners identified only 10 accounted for > 80% of the total PCBs. A PCB congener was identified accounting for 5% of the total PCBs (2,3′,4,4′,5′,6-hexachlorobiphenyl) [168] not usually reported in biological samples. Comparison of the molecular structure for the persistent PCB congeners revealed the lack of meta-para unsubstituted adjacent carbon atoms. It has been shown that meta-para unsubstituted adjacent carbon atoms facilitate the metabolism of PCBs and it is hypothesised that the formation of hydroxy derivatives may depend upon such a requirement.  相似文献

In order to study the transfer of trace metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn) between sediments and living organisms, flatfishes (flounder, Platichthys flesus and sole, Solea solea) were collected monthly in the Loire estuary (France) for more than a year. Trace metal concentrations were determined in flatfish digestive contents and tissues. The influence of some ecological factors upon bioaccumulation of trace metals was considered. We consider the benthic way of life not to be responsible for a preferential bioaccumulation of trace metals in flatfishes. Although zinc accumulation in external organs is important, the hypothesis of an uptake via food and sediment cannot be rejected.  相似文献

Previous laboratory studies have shown reductions in PCB bioavailability for sediments amended with activated carbon (AC). Here we report results on a preliminary pilot-scale study to assess challenges in scaling-up for field deployment and monitoring. The goals of the preliminary pilot-scale study at Hunters Point Shipyard (San Francisco, USA) were to (1) test the capabilities of a large-scale mixing device for incorporating AC into sediment, (2) develop and evaluate our field assessment techniques, and (3) compare reductions in PCB bioavailability found in the laboratory with well-mixed systems to those observed in the field with one-time-mixed systems. In this study we successfully used a large-scale device to mix 500 kg of AC into a 34.4 m2 plot to a depth of 1 ft, a depth that includes the majority of the biologically active zone. Our results indicate that after 7 months of AC-sediment contact in the field, the 28-day PCB bioaccumulation for the bent-nosed clam, Macoma nasuta, field-deployed to this AC-amended sediment was approximately half of the bioaccumulation resulting from exposure to untreated sediment. Similar PCB bioaccumulation reductions were found in laboratory bioassays conducted on both the bivalve, M. nasuta and the estuarine amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus, using sediment collected from the treated and untreated field plots one year after the AC amendment occurred. To further understand the long-term effectiveness of AC as an in situ treatment strategy for PCB-contaminated sediments under field conditions, a 3-year comprehensive study is currently underway at Hunters Point that will compare the effectiveness of two large-scale mixing devices and include both unmixed and mixed-only control plots.  相似文献

Individual terminal-feeding copepodite-V stage Neocalanus cristatus were collected systematically in the northern Gulf of Alaska (GOA) near 60°N from 1998 to 2004 from which the natural abundance of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes was measured. The data confirmed the existence of an isotopic cross-shelf gradient such that values low in 13C content are diagnostic of oceanic production from the GOA when measured in organisms taken from Prince William Sound (PWS). The mean 13C/12C cross-shelf gradient of 3–4 delta units was relatively strong, with generally good separation between GOA and Prince William Sound observations, whereas the mean 15N/14N gradient of ∼2 delta units was relatively weak, with frequent overlap between GOA and PWS observations. There was a seasonal 15N/14N increase in the GOA. The 13C/12C values observed in PWS were more consistent over time than those observed in the GOA. Distinctively high 13C/12C values that were similar to those typical of PWS were observed at the continental slope during three of the Mays in the 1998–2004 period. The circulation pattern associated with mesoscale eddies, when they occurred just south of the sampling line based on satellite sea-surface height anomaly data, suggested that cross-shelf flow in the offshore direction drove high slope 13C/12C values. These observations led to positing that high 13C/12C values reflect coastal carbon isotope signatures and diatom blooms. Based on samples from May 1996, the three GOA Neocalanus congeners had concordant isotopic patterns with relatively small systematic species differences confirming that the isotopic patterns observed for N. cristatus apply to other zooplankton.  相似文献

Concentrations of seven polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners were examined in flounder (Platichthys flesus) and sediment in three southern Baltic Sea sites, representing a range of exposure conditions, in order to evaluate spatial differences in PBDE contamination. Additionally, PBDEs were measured in muscle, liver, and gonads of flounder from one of the sites in order to examine inter-tissue distribution. Mean muscle Σ7PBDE levels, in the range of 10–21 ng g−1 lipid, showed inter-site differences attributed to the distance from the Gulf of Gdańsk, and were overall lower than reported earlier in herring, sprat, and salmon. Biota sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) for Σ7PBDE and individual BDE congeners, in the range of 0.5–24.5, were generally consistent with predicted models for persistent hydrophobic halogenated contaminants. Wet weight (wet wt) PBDE levels in muscle and liver, but not in gonads, were related to tissue lipid content and did not correlate with the fish length and weight. These tissues differed in PBDE levels and profiles as a result of varying lipid content and presumably lipid composition and congener-specific physico-chemical properties.  相似文献

This study was designed to relate fauna characteristics and sediment accumulation processes in the James River, VA and was conducted during June 1981. Physical sedimentary and benthic biological parameters, as well as sediment structure and radionuclide profiles, were evaluated for 11 stations. Faunal distribution patterns reflected species' response to salinity changes along the estuarine gradient, but not to differences in sediment accumulation rates. Levels of bioturbation could not be predicted easily on the basis of faunal characteristics alone. Results suggest that the physical processes of erosion and deposition strongly influence the ability of macrobenthos to bioturbate sediments in this estuary. Areas of rapid deposition (>3 cm y−1) exhibit little evidence of bioturbation, as do areas where erosion, or relatively constant physical reworking of sediments, dominate. Areas with low sediment accumulation rates (0·5-3 cm y−1) exhibit the highest levels of mixing as evidenced in X-radiographs. Estuarine organisms inhabiting soft bottoms are typically ‘opportunistic’, shallow-living and short-lived species, and the composition of their communities is not strongly influenced by rates of deposition. Physical reworking of sediments is most likely to occur near to the sediment-water interface where reworking by shallow-living organisms is most intense. Sediment-mixing processes should be characterized using a range of approaches. The phasing of interactions among erosion, physical transport, deposition and biological mixing must be resolved on the appropriate time scales if the mechanics of processes governing the formation of the sedimentary record are to be elucidated.  相似文献

Due to the lack of knowledge regarding annual bioaccumulation rates in estuarine and marine fauna, the main aim of this work was to study the annual mercury bioaccumulation in the well-documented bivalve species Scrobicularia plana along a human induced mercury gradient in the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Portugal) and in a nearby, non-polluted system (Mondego estuary), parallel to the risks associated with its consumption by humans.Minimum total mercury concentration was as low as 0.019 mg kg−1 (wwt) in 4+ year old organisms in the reference site, where a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) was found between total mercury concentrations and size, resulting in negative bioaccumulation rates (detoxification). On the other hand, values reached 1.8 mg kg−1 (wwt) in 3+ year old bivalves from the most contaminated area, where a strong positive correlation with size was found (p < 0.01) and annual bioaccumulation rates were as high as 0.25 mg kg−1 yr−1. Annual bioaccumulation rates were highly correlated with suspended particulate matter mercury concentrations. Even though the levels of organic mercury contents increased parallel to the contamination gradient, at each sampling station, no increment was found with age, which corresponded to a decrease in organic mercury percentage with age.In terms of ecological management and public health, the ratio of 0.01 consistently found between Scrobicularia plana annual mercury accumulation rates and SPM mercury levels for most sites may permit to roughly estimate S. plana contamination of commercial sized individuals (>2.5 cm) and, if verified and confirmed in other systems, be used as a simple management tool.  相似文献

The hypothesis, that at least certain marine microbial organisms respond to toxic stress by the development of resistance, was tested using the hypotric marine ciliate Euplotes vannus Muller as the test organism. Resistance to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB, Aroclor 1254) was developed in E. vannus by exposing the animals to progressively higher PCB concentrations during a period of several months. The resistance to PCB persisted for at least 80 days (greater than 40 generations) after final exposure. This suggests either that genetic selection or persistent (lasting over many cell division cycles) phenotypic trait modification, possibly in the form of Dauermodification, had occurred. If resistance were widespread among marine microbial organisms in polluted environments it would be an important consideration in evaluating the long-term biological impact of both natural and man-induced chemical stress.  相似文献

I am extremely grateful and honored for being awarded the Okada Prize (1985) for my study. The present article reviews my research on the distribution, behavior and fate of PCBs in the marine environment. The outline of this study is summarized as follows:
  1. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detectable in the wide range of environmental media and biota of the Seto-Inland Sea, Japan, in which much high concentrations were found in sediment and biological samples due to their hydrophobic, lipophilic and less biodegradable properties as well as their extensive production and use in estuarine and coastal regions.
  2. PCBs extend the boundaries of their distribution all over the global environment, being evidenced by their occurrence in open ocean atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, even in Antarctica. The global contamination of PCBs is much more prominent in northern hemisphere than in southern hemisphere.
  3. The sinking rate of PCBs from surface to deeper layers in open ocean water column is relatively slower in tropical waters than in high latitude ones. This implies the possible prolonged contamination of persistent synthetic organic chemicals in the tropical marine environment.
  4. The bioaccumulation processes in marine ecosystems can be explained by the physicochemical and biochemical properties of PCBs and the metabolic capacity of organisms. In higher animals, additional factors such as parturition and lactation are also related to this process.
  5. Total PCB load in global environment was estimated to be about 370 thousand tons. Of this, most amounts were in coastal sediment and open ocean water. Presently, about 780 thousand tons of PCBs are still in use mainly in electrical equipments. In order to reduce the PCB levels in marine environment, pertinent measures to prevent the further discharge and safe disposal of PCBs are required.
