The data from observations of the geomagnetic field, ionospheric parameters and atmospheric emissions, carried out at four midlatitude station in Bulgaria are analysed. The observations refer to the geomagnetic disturbance on 28/30 October 1973 (Kpmax = 7) and also to a very quiet period before it. It is shown that all four geomagnetic substorms during the night of 29/30 October influenced the midlatitude F-region. This is indicated by a lowering of the height of the F-region by ca. 50–70 km. Owing to this downward drift of ionisation the dissociative recombination and the intensity of the red line is accordingly increased. As an explanation of this phenomenon we suggest the action of the electric fields, which can at the same time be transported from the magnetosphere to the ionosphere.  相似文献

Measurements of electron content (NT) near the crest of the equatorial ionosphere anomaly in South America have been made and analysed to investigate NT variations with solar hour, solar rotation and geomagnetic storms. The annual mean of diurnal ratio, defined as the ratio of the maximum to the minimum electron content of the day is found to be 5.0. Anomalous increases in night time electron content are observed with maxima around 2100 LMT and 2300 LMT during summer and equinoctial months. These increases are found to be linked with vertical motion of the F-layer. Spatial resonance in equatorial F-layer plasma appears to be the possible cause of these increases.  相似文献

A numerical model of current F-region theory is use to calculate the diurnal variation of the mid-latitude ionospheric F-region over Millstone Hill on 23–24 March 1970, during quiet geomagnetic conditions. From the solar EUV flux, the model calculates at each altitude and time step primary photoelectron spectra and ionization rates of various ion species. The photoelectron transport equation is solved for the secondary ionization rates, photoelectron spectra, and various airglow excitation rates. Five ion continuity equations that include the effects of transport by diffusion, magnetospheric-ionospheric plasma transport, electric fields, and neutral winds are solved for the ion composition and electron density. The electron and ion temperatures are also calculated using the heating rates determined from chemical reactions, photoelectron collisions, and magnetospheric-ionospheric energy transport. The calculations are performed for a diurnal cycle considering a stationary field tube co-rotating with the Earth; only the vertical plasma drift caused by electric fields perpendicular to the geomagnetic field line is allowed but not the horizontal drift. The boundary conditions used in the model are determined from the incoherent scatter radar measurements of Te, Ti and O+ flux at 800km over Millstone Hill (Evans, 1971a). The component of the neutral thermospheric winds along the geomagnetic field has an important influence on the overall ionospheric structure. It is determined from a separate dynamic model of the neutral thermosphere, using incoherent scatter radar measurements. The calculated diurnal variation of the ionospheric structure agrees well with the values measured by the incoherent scatter radar when certain restrictions are placed on the solar EUV flux and model neutral atmospheric compositions. Namely, the solar EUV fluxes of Hinteregger (1970) are doubled and an atomic oxygen concentration of at least 1011cm3 at 120 km is required for the neutral model atmosphere. Calculations also show that the topside thermal structure of the ionosphere is primarily maintained by a flow of heat from the magnetosphere and the night-time F2-region is maintained in part by neutral winds, diffusion, electric fields, and plasma flow from the magnetosphere. The problem of maintaining the calculated night-time ionosphere at the observed values is also discussed.  相似文献

Using the Faraday rotation technique with the ATS-3 satellite, it has been possible to monitor changes in the total electron content (NT) of the mid-latitude ionosphere during the first day of 20 geomagnetic storms. Our analysis has shown that during the positive phase (ΔNT > 0) of ionospheric storms the absolute magnitude of the increase in NT exhibits a very pronounced maximum near sunset. The mean value of ΔNT at 17:00 LT is more than five times the average ΔNT value at local noon. This effect is basically independent of the storm commencement time and is usually associated with substantial local enhancements of the total geomagnetic field. The NT enhancements are discussed in terms of a contraction and draining of the plasmasphere. A model is presented in which the dawn-dusk electric field responsible for the magnetospheric convection slows down the corotational motion of the plasmaspheric ionization in the dusk sector. This braking action causes a ‘pile up’ of the plasma and the magnetic field along the entire dusk sector.  相似文献

The local time dependent effects of geomagnetic storm on the ionospheric TEC and Rate of change of TEC Index (ROTI) are studied here using the GPS data for four different low latitude stations: Ogaswara, Japan (24.29?°N, 153.91?°E; Geomagnetic: 17.21?°N, 136.16?°W); Surat, India (21.16?°N, 72.78?°E; Geomagnetic: 12.88?°N, 146.91?°E); Bogota, Colombia (4.64?°N, ?74.09?°E; Geomagnetic: 14.42?°N, 1.67?°W); and Kokee park Waimea, Hawaii, US (22.12?°N, ?159.67?°E; Geomagnetic: 22.13?°N, 91.19?°W). The solar wind velocity and geomagnetic indices: Dst, Kp and IMF Bz are utilized to validate the geomagnetic storms registered during the years 2011 and 2012. Using the GPS based TEC data and computed values of ROTI, the storm induced ionospheric irregularities generation and inhibition has been studied for all stations. The present study suggests that, the F-region irregularities of a scale length of few kilometers over the magnetic equator are locally affected by geomagnetic storms. This study also shows a good agreement (70–84 %) with the Aaron’s criteria (Aarons, Radio Sci., 26:1131–1149, 1991; Biktash, Ann. Geophys., 19:731–739, 2004) as significant absence and enhancement of ROTI was found to be influenced by the local time of the negative peak of Dst index association.  相似文献

The effect of lunar tides on the apparent ionospheric drift velocity (V) for an equatorial station Thumba (0.6°S dip) is computed by using nearly six years of data at fixed solar hours. Significant tides are observed in the E-region drifts, particularly around 12.00 hr and in the F-region drifts around 15.00 hr.A good correlation in the phases of the lunar tides in H and V is found to exist, suggesting a strong electrojet control of the horizontal ionospheric drift around these hours.  相似文献

Continuous measurements of the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) provide a parameter well suited for the study of F-region disturbance effects. In this investigation, five cases of large and rapid drops in TEC observed near the sunset period are interpreted as being due to the contraction of the plasmasphere to L values less than 3. A model calculation is performed for the specific case of 1 November 1968 using simultaneous Alouette I data to define the position and magnitude of the ionospheric trough. The results indicate that the motion of a deep trough across the ray path from a geostationary satellite to an observing station can cause drastic changes in the measured amounts of Faraday rotation and therefore in the derived values of TEC. All of the TEC data sources available for the five events are then examined in an attempt to describe more completely the latitude dependence of the effects. It is suggested that during severe geomagnetic storms, the large and rapid decays in TEC during the 18–21 LT period to values significantly below normal can be used as a criterion to determine the approximate latitudinal extent of the contracted plasmasphere.  相似文献

This paper presents a correlative study between the peak values of geomagnetic activity indices (Dst, Kp, ap and AE) and the peak values of various interplanetary field (Bt, Bz, E and σB) and plasma (T, D, V, P and β) parameters along with their various products (BV, BzV and B2V) during intense geomagnetic storms (GMSs) for rising, maximum and decay phases as well as for complete solar cycle 23. The study leads to the conclusion that the peak values of different geomagnetic activity indices are in good correlation with Bt, Bz, σB, V, E, BV, BzV and B2V, therefore these parameters are most useful for predicting GMSs and substorms. These parameters are also reliable indicators of the strength of GMSs. We have also presented the lag/lead time analysis between the maximum of Dst and peak values of geomagnetic activity indices, various interplanetary field/plasma parameters for all GMSs. We have found that the average of peak values of geomagnetic activity indices and various field/plasma parameters are larger in decay phase compare to rising and maximum phases of cycle 23. Our analyses show that average values of lag/lead time lie in the ≈?4.00 h interval for Kp, ap and AE indices as well as for Bt, Bz, σB, E, D and P. For a more meaningful analysis we have also presented the above study for two different groups G1 (CME-driven GMSs) and G2 (CIR-driven GMSs) separately. Correlation coefficients between various interplanetary field/plasma parameters, their various products and geomagnetic activity indices for G1 and G2 groups show different nature. Three GMSs and associated solar sources observed during three different phases of this solar cycle have also been studied and it is found that GMSs are associated with large flares, halo CMEs and their active regions are close to the solar equator.  相似文献

Short-term variations δf0F2 in the values of the critical frequency of the ionospheric F2 region in middle latitudes due to solar and geomagnetic activities have been investigated. Diurnal and seasonal features of the energy flow from the auroral into midlatitude ionosphere are revealed. It is shown that they could be taken into account if instead of the 3-hour geomagnetic indices or their daily averages a new index is employed which characterizes the average level of geomagnetic activity over intervals of time no less than nine hours usually during the evening and night hours. A technique for short-term predicting δf0F2 in the midlatitude ionosphere is developed which employs the indices of solar and geomagnetic activities, and errors in the predictions are estimated.  相似文献

We have examined the relationships among coronal holes (CHs), corotating interaction regions (CIRs), and geomagnetic storms in the period 1996?–?2003. We have identified 123 CIRs with forward and reverse shock or wave features in ACE and Wind data and have linked them to coronal holes shown in National Solar Observatory/Kitt Peak (NSO/KP) daily He i 10?830 Å maps considering the Sun?–?Earth transit time of the solar wind with the observed wind speed. A sample of 107 CH?–?CIR pairs is thus identified. We have examined the magnetic polarity, location, and area of the CHs as well as their association with geomagnetic storms (Dst≤?50 nT). For all pairs, the magnetic polarity of the CHs is found to be consistent with the sunward (or earthward) direction of the interplanetary magnetic fields (IMFs), which confirms the linkage between the CHs and the CIRs in the sample. Our statistical analysis shows that (1) the mean longitude of the center of CHs is about 8°E, (2) 74% of the CHs are located between 30°S and 30°N (i.e., mostly in the equatorial regions), (3) 46% of the CIRs are associated with geomagnetic storms, (4) the area of geoeffective coronal holes is found to be larger than 0.12% of the solar hemisphere area, and (5) the maximum convective electric field E y in the solar wind is much more highly correlated with the Dst index than any other solar or interplanetary parameter. In addition, we found that there is also a semiannual variation of CIR-associated geomagnetic storms and discovered new tendencies as follows: For negative-polarity coronal holes, the percentage (59%; 16 out of 27 events) of CIRs associated with geomagnetic storms in the first half of the year is much larger than that (25%; 6 out of 24 events) in the second half of the year and the occurrence percentage (63%; 15 out of 24 events) of CIR-associated storms in the southern hemisphere is significantly larger than that (26%; 7 out of 27 events) in the northern hemisphere. Positive-polarity coronal holes exhibit an opposite tendency.  相似文献

A superposed-epoch method is used to investigate the occurrence of spread-F at Huancayo relative to days of high sunspot activity and also relative to days of high geomagnetic activity. A good correlation is found between days of high Ap index and high spread-F occurrence for a pre-sunrise interval of a few hours. When 3-hourly kp indices are used they show a peak value approximately 6 hr prior to an above-average occurrence of spread-F. It is suggested that this pre-sunrise spread-F is associated with ionospheric height rises which are produced by travelling disturbances, initiated in polar regions at times of high geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of rapid-run magnetograms from Guam (geomagnetic latitude = 4.2°) revealed that there are two kinds of geomagnetic sudden commencement (SC) observed in nighttime. One is the ordinary SC consisting of a main impulse only which has a smooth rise of the H-component. The other is a superposition by a small positive impulse on the very beginning part of the smooth rise of the main impulse and consequently the SC starts with a small stepwise increase of the H-component. The latter type of SC occurs between 20 and 08 h L.T. and its occurrence rate takes the maximum value of about 50% around 03 h L.T. Corresponding magnetograms from a dayside equatorial station (Huancayo, geomagnetic latitude = ?0.7°) were examined and a good correlation was found between the stepwise SC at the nightside (Guam) and SC1 with a preliminary reverse impulse (PRI) at the dayside (Huancayo). Since PRI observed at the dayside equator may be interpreted as an extension of an ionospheric current due to an dusk-to-dawn electric field impressed on the polar ionosphere, our results show that a polar originating ionospheric current can extend to the nightside equator and produce a small but observable magnetic effect in spite of much reduced nighttime ionospheric conductivity.  相似文献

We compare the geoeffective parameters of halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We consider 50 front-side full-halo CMEs (FFH CMEs), which are from the list of Michalek, Gopalswamy, and Yashiro (Solar Phys. 246, 399, 2007), whose asymmetric-cone model parameters and earthward-direction parameter were available. For each CME we use its projected velocity [V p], radial velocity [V r], angle between cone axis and sky plane [γ] from the cone model, earthward-direction parameter [D], source longitude [L], and magnetic-field orientation [M] of its CME source region. We make a simple linear-regression analysis to find out the relationship between CME parameters and Dst index. The main results are as follows: i) The combined parameters [(V r D)1/2 and V r γ] have higher correlation coefficients [cc] with the Dst index than the other parameters [V p and V r]: cc=0.76 for (V r D)1/2, cc=0.70 for V r γ, cc=0.55 for V r, and cc=0.17 for V p. ii) Correlation coefficients between V r γ and Dst index depend on L and M; cc=0.59 for 21 eastern events [E], cc=0.80 for 29 western events [W], cc=0.49 for 17 northward magnetic-field events [N], and cc=0.69 for 33 southward magnetic-field events [S]. iii) Super geomagnetic storms (Dst≤?200 nT) only appear in the western and southward magnetic-field events. The mean absolute Dst values of geomagnetic storms (Dst≤?50 nT) increase with an order of E+N, E+S, W+N, and W+S events; the mean absolute Dst value (169 nT) of W+S events is significantly larger than that (75 nT) of E+N events. Our results demonstrate that not only do the cone-model parameters together with the earthward-direction parameter improve the relationship between CME parameters and Dst index, but also the longitude and the magnetic-field orientation of a FFH CME source region play a significant role in predicting geomagnetic storms.  相似文献

We studied the occurrence and characteristics of geomagnetic storms associated with disk-centre full-halo coronal mass ejections (DC-FH-CMEs). Such coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can be considered as the most plausible cause of geomagnetic storms. We selected front-side full-halo coronal mass ejections detected by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/LASCO) from the beginning of 1996 till the end of 2015 with source locations between solar longitudes E10 and W10 and latitudes N20 and S20. The number of selected CMEs was 66 of which 33 (50%) were deduced to be the cause of 30 geomagnetic storms with \(\mathrm{Dst} \leq- 50~\mbox{nT}\). Of the 30 geomagnetic storms, 26 were associated with single disk-centre full-halo CMEs, while four storms were associated, in addition to at least one disk-centre full-halo CME, also with other halo or wide CMEs from the same active region. Thirteen of the 66 CMEs (20%) were associated with 13 storms with \(-100~\mbox{nT} < \mbox{Dst} \leq- 50~\mbox{nT}\), and 20 (30%) were associated with 17 storms with \(\mbox{Dst}\leq- 100~\mbox{nT}\). We investigated the distributions and average values of parameters describing the DC-FH-CMEs and their interplanetary counterparts encountering Earth. These parameters included the CME sky-plane speed and direction parameter, associated solar soft X-ray flux, interplanetary magnetic field strength, \(B_{t}\), southward component of the interplanetary magnetic field, \(B_{s}\), solar wind speed, \(V_{sw}\), and the \(y\)-component of the solar wind electric field, \(E_{y}\). We found only a weak correlation between the Dst of the geomagnetic storms associated with DC-FH-CMEs and the CME sky-plane speed and the CME direction parameter, while the correlation was strong between the Dst and all the solar wind parameters (\(B_{t}\), \(B_{s}\), \(V_{sw}\), \(E_{y}\)) measured at 1 AU. We investigated the dependences of the properties of DC-FH-CMEs and the associated geomagnetic storms on different phases of solar cycles and the differences between Solar Cycles 23 and 24. In the rise phase of Solar Cycle 23 (SC23), five out of eight DC-FH-CMEs were geoeffective (\(\mbox{Dst} \leq- 50~\mbox{nT}\)). In the corresponding phase of SC24, only four DC-FH-CMEs were observed, three of which were nongeoeffective (\(\mbox{Dst} > - 50~\mbox{nT}\)). The largest number of DC-FH-CMEs occurred at the maximum phases of the cycles (21 and 17, respectively). Most of the storms with \(\mbox{Dst}\leq- 100~\mbox{nT}\) occurred at or close to the maximum phases of the cycles. When comparing the storms during epochs of corresponding lengths in Solar Cycles 23 and 24, we found that during the first 85 months of Cycle 23 the geoeffectiveness rate of the disk-centre full-halo CMEs was 58% with an average minimum value of the Dst index of \(- 146~\mbox{nT}\). During the corresponding epoch of Cycle 24, only 35% of the disk-centre full-halo CMEs were geoeffective with an average value of Dst of \(- 97~\mbox{nT}\).  相似文献

The paper describes a comparison of vertical electron drift in the F-region (Vz) measured by VHP incoherent scatter radar at Jicamarca with the corresponding variations of geomagnetic horizontal field (H) and the maximum frequency reflected from The Es layer (Es) at Huancayo during the geomagnetic storm period 7–9 March, 1970. The Vz is generally upward during the daytime at the equator, but during 7–9, March, 1970, Vz was negative for brief periods associated with negative bays in H. These periods of abnormally low or of downward Vz correspond closely with the period of complete disappearance of the q type of Es layer. The magnetic bays associated with the intensification of ring current do not affect the equatorial Es- q and it is only the negative bays in H at the equator due to the ionospheric current flowing westward, that cause sudden disappearance of Es? q. It is suggested that the q type of Es is due to cross-field instability created in the electrojet region due to interaction of northward magnetic field and vertical upward Hall polarization electric field when the plasma density gradient is upward. The sudden disappearances of Es? q are due to the reversal of the horizontal electric field in the equatorial ionosphere and thereby due to the reversal of the equatorial electrojet currents. These reversals of electric field may be due to the imposition on the normal Sq field of another westward electric field.  相似文献

A high time resolution study of the relationship between the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling function ? and the total energy dissipation rate UT of the magnetosphere is made using 5-min average values of solar wind data and of the geomagnetic indices AE and Dst. All the results are essentially the same as those obtained by the earlier studies which were based on the hourly average data set. Therefore, we confirm that the magnetosphere is primarily a driven system.  相似文献

A survey of metallic ions detected by the Bennett Ion Mass Spectrometers flown on the Atmosphere Explorer satellites, including both circular and eccentric orbital configurations, shows that patches of these ions of meteoric origin are frequently present during magnetically active periods on the bottomside of the F-layer at middle and high latitudes. In particular the F-region metals statistically tend to appear at night in the vicinity of the main ionospheric trough (in a band of invariant latitudes approx. 10 degrees wide) and on the day side of the polar cap. These distributions were previously associated with the expected dynamics of ions in the F-region above 140 km where meridional neutral wind drag and convection electric fields are the dominant ion transport mechanisms. However, the main meteor deposition layer—the presumed source region of the metals—is located below 100 km where these transport mechanisms do not prevail. It is demonstrated that the Pedersen ion drifts driven by intense electric fields such as those associated with sub-auroral ion drifts (SAID) are sufficient to transport the long-lived metallic ions upward from the main meteor layer to altitudes where the drag of equatorial directed neutral winds and electric field convection can support them against the downward pull of gravity and transport them to other locations. The spatial and temporal distribution of the middle and high latitude F-region metals are consistent with the known characteristics of the electric fields and with the expected F-region ion dynamics.  相似文献

We have studied the extent to which various transport processes affect the dispersal of a gas artificially injected into the night-time atmosphere at F-region altitudes. In addition to diffusion, we have found that nonlinear acceleration, viscous stress, and thermospheric winds affect the dispersal of the injected gas. The magnitude of the effect depends on the atmospheric density, which is a function of solar activity. For an injected H2 gas, non-linear acceleration and viscous stress rapidly become more important than diffusion above about 300 km for low solar activity (T = 750K), 340 km for moderate solar activity (T = 1000K), and 400 km for high solar activity (T = 1500K). For an injected H2O gas, the corresponding altitudes are 350, 400, and 470 km for low, moderate and high solar activity, respectively. The effect of nonlinear acceleration and viscous stress is to retard the expansion of the injected gas. Thermospheric winds of 150–400 m s?1 are important at altitudes near and below the F-region peak electron density. These winds act to transport the injected gas in the wind direction and this affects the shape and temporal development of the subsequent ionospheric hole. Because the H2O diffusion coefficient is smaller than the H2 diffusion coefficient, winds are more important for H2O than for H2.  相似文献

This paper presents some features of the ionospheric response observed in equatorial and mid-latitudes region to two strong geomagnetic storms, occurring during Oct. 19–23, 2001 and May 13–17, 2005 and to understand the phenomena of pre-storm that lead to very intense geomagnetic storms. The result point to the fact that pre-storm phenomena that leads to intense ionospheric storm are; large southward turning of interplanetary magnetic field Bz, high electric field, increase in flow speed stream, increase in proton number density, high pressure ram and high plasma beta. The magnitude of Bz turning into southward direction from northward highly depends upon the severity of the storm and the variation in F2 layer parameter at the time of geomagnetic storm are strongly dependent upon the storm intensity. A detailed analysis of the responses of the ionosphere shows that during the storm periods, foF2 values depleted simultaneously both in the equatorial and mid latitude. Observation also shows that low to moderate variations in ionospheric F2 at the pre-storm period may signal the upcoming of large ionospheric disturbances at the main phase. The ionospheric F2response for low and mid latitude does not show any significant differences during the storm main phase and the pre-storm period. The ionospheric response during the pre-storm period is thought very puzzling. The period is observed to be depleted throughout with low-moderate effect across all the stations in the low and mid latitude.  相似文献
