The intensities of radio and optical signals observed during spacecraft and stellar occultations by planets scintillate due to atmospheric turbulence. The combined effect of turbulent fluctuations in refractivity and the average atmospheric gradient are found to produce slightly smaller signal intensity scintillations than the homogeneous case when there is no gradient, in contrast to a prediction that the scintillations would be markedly increased. Profiles of atmospheric temperature and pressure derived from intensity measurements are found to have much larger errors due to turbulence than do the corresponding profiles derived from radio Doppler frequency measurements. However, such errors are still small in the limit of weak scattering, which is assumed here. Radio and optical occultation experiments tend to be complementary since the generally shorter distances involved in the former mean that the radio experiments can probe relatively deeply into the atmosphere, while the optical experiments are limited to tenuous atmospheric regions. Because the radio experiments generally have a much greater dynamic measurement range, they are more likely to encounter conditions where strong scattering occurs than will the optical occultation experiments, provided the rms turbulent refractivity increases with depth approximately as the refractivity of the quiescent atmosphere.  相似文献

The distribution of neutral and ionized particles about a planet depends, at any time, on angular coordinates (latitude and longitude) as well as altitude. Measurements of the Venusian and Martian atmospheres and ionospheres have been made by means of the ‘occultation’ experiment on-board the Mariner spacecrafts, and the same or similar experiment is planned for future missions to the planets. The conventional method of reducing the residual doppler data assumes spherical symmetry, in which the refractivity of the medium depends only on radius from the center of the planet, or altitude. It is shown that the neglect of angular dependence may introduce serious errors, even for media in which this dependence is slight compared to that in the radial direction, when the plane of motion of the spacecraft about the planet is inclined with respect to the direction of the Earth. The magnitude of the errors may be greatest for a planet such as Mercury and least for Jupiter, if planetary size and atmospheric temperature are the principal factors considered. Mars and Venus being intermediate. These results are most significant for an orbiter in which the orbital plane is inclined to obtain planetary coverage in a matter of months of measurements. Results of calculations for a particular model show that scale height measurements, and, thereby, atmospheric temperature, may be in error by a factor greater than 2 for inclined orbital configurations.  相似文献

Radio occultation studies of the structure of planetary atmospheres have generally involved relatively shallow penetration of the spacecraft behind the limb of the planet in the plane of the sky. Current radio link sensitivities allow detection of the radio signals at all occultation depths, whenever the planet-spacecraft distance is sufficiently large for the refraction to occur at atmospheric heights where microwave absorption is not too large. Voyager 1 at Jupiter and Voyager 2 at Saturn will pass almost directly behind the planets as viewed from the Earth. Thus they will pass through the caustics that corresponds to the focal line of a spherical planet, expanded by oblateness into a surface approximating a four-cusp cylinder. In the plane of the sky, the projection of this surface approximates the evolute of the planet's limb. As the spacecraft passes behind the planet with its antenna tracking the occulting limb, the strength of the radio signals received on Earth will at first decrease due to defocusing in the atmosphere, but then increase as the evolute is approached, because of the focusing caused by limb curvature. Inside the evolute there are four simultaneous signal paths over four limb positions. If we neglect absorption, focused signals for an instant could become orders of magnitude stronger than for the unocculted spacecraft. Measurements of the frequency and intensity of deep occultation signals, and of the timing and character of these “evolute flashes”, could provide information on atmospheric absorption, turbulence, and structure, and on details of the shape of the atmosphere at the focusing limbs as affected, for example, by planetary gravitational moments, rotation, and zonal winds. Such observations will be attempted with Voyager and potentially could be very fruitful in the Pioneer Venus and Galileo (Jupiter) orbiting missions.  相似文献

Many atmospheric measurement systems, such as the sounding instruments on Voyager, gather atmospheric information in the form of temperature versus pressure level. In these terms, there is considerable consistency among the mean atmospheric profiles of the outer planets Jupiter through Neptune, including Titan. On a given planet or on Titan, the range of variability of temperature versus pressure level due to seasonal, latitudinal, and diurnal variations is also not large. However, many engineering needs for atmospheric models relate not to temperature versus pressure level but atmospheric density versus geometric altitude. This need is especially true for design and analysis of aerocapture systems. Drag force available for aerocapture is directly proportional to atmospheric density. Available aerocapture “corridor width” (allowable range of atmospheric entry angle) also depends on height rate of change of atmospheric density, as characterized by density scale height. Characteristics of hydrostatics and the gas law equation mean that relatively small systematic differences in temperature versus pressure profiles can integrate at high altitudes to very large differences in density versus altitude profiles. Thus, a given periapsis density required to accomplish successful aerocapture can occur at substantially different altitudes (∼150-300 km) on the various outer planets, and significantly different density scale heights (∼20-50 km) can occur at these periapsis altitudes. This paper will illustrate these effects and discuss implications for improvements in atmospheric measurements to yield significant impact on design of aerocapture systems for future missions to Titan and the outer planets. Relatively small-scale atmospheric perturbations, such as gravity waves, tides, and other atmospheric variations can also have significant effect on design details for aerocapture guidance and control systems. This paper will discuss benefits that would result from improved understanding of Titan and outer planetary atmospheric perturbation characteristics. Details of recent engineering-level atmospheric models for Titan and Neptune will be presented, and effects of present and future levels of atmospheric uncertainty and variability characteristics will be examined.  相似文献

The occulation experiment may be used to obtain dynamic meteorological information when performed from an orbiting spacecraft. It is shown that interpretation of refractivity data in this fashion does not require a composition, as normally used to obtain pressure, density and temperature profiles.  相似文献

In recent years, the technique of Global Positioning System/Low Earth Orbit (GPS/LEO) radio occultation has opened up a new route for exploring the earth atmosphere. With this technique, the vertical profiles of pressure, temperature, water vapor of the earth atmosphere can be retrieved from GPS/LEO occultation data, thus making the latter a potentially valuable data resource for meteorological and atmospheric sciences. The technique may effectively improve the quality of the meteorological profiles, and so improve the current numerical weather forecasting model. In the one-dimensional variational (1DVAR) assimilation retrieval technique in current use, the profiles of atmospheric water vapor and temperature, as well as the sea level pressure are retrieved by assimilating the atmospheric refractivity or bending angle profile from GPS/LEO occultation data. In the system independently developed at Shanghai Observatory, the 1DVAR assimilation of CPS occultation data is accomplished by the Levenberg-Marquardt method with the analytical data from the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) as the background field, the refractivity profile obtained from CHAMP occultation data as the observational quantity. The result was checked with sounding balloon data near the occultation points.

An analysis of the Mariner 10 dual frequency radio occultation recordings has yielded new information on the radius and atmosphere of Mercury. The ingress measurements which were conducted near 1.1° North latitude and 67.4° East longitude on the night side of the planet, gave a value for the radius of 2439.5 ± 1 km. Egress near 67.6° North latitide and 258.4° East longitude in the sunlit side yielded a radius of 2439.0 ± 1 km. The atmospheric measurements showed the electron density to be less than 103 cm?3 on both sides of the planet. From the latter result one may infer an upper limit to the dayside surface gas density of 106 molecules per cm3.  相似文献

Planets, the Moon and the Sun have a number of ‘atmospheres’ which may be measured by the radio occultation method, using radio links to spacecraft which are being occulted by the body as seen from Earth. Molecular atmospheres, ionospheres, magnetospheres, particulate atmospheres and several general-relativistic atmospheres can all affect radio signal charecteristics. Measured Doppler frequencies, signal amplitudes and wave polarizations contain information on these atmospheres. From such occultation measurements it is possible, for example, to derive profiles which are related to the changes with height of temperature, pressure, density, free electron concentration and the fractional volume occupied by particulate matter. Important clues for identifying molecular or particulate constituents can also be obtained. Even though one type of measurement may be sensitive to several different atmospheric characteristics, these characteristics can often be separated due to differences in their dependence on radio wavelength or on height above the surface.  相似文献

This report presents both a retrospective of ground-based support for spacecraft missions to the outer solar system and a perspective of support for future missions. Past support is reviewed in a series of case studies involving the author. The most basic support is essential, providing the mission with information without which the planned science would not have been accomplished. Another is critical, without which science would have been returned, but missing a key element in its understanding. Some observations are enabling by accomplishing one aspect of an experiment which would otherwise not have been possible. Other observations provide a perspective of the planet as a whole which is not available to instruments with narrow fields of view and limited spatial coverage, sometimes motivating a re-prioritizing of experiment objectives. Ground-based support is also capable of providing spectral coverage not present in the complement of spacecraft instruments. Earth-based observations also have the capability of filling in gaps of spacecraft coverage of atmospheric phenomena, as well as providing surveillance of longer-term behavior than the coverage available to the mission. Future missions benefiting from ground-based support would include the Juno mission to Jupiter in the next decade, a flagship-class mission to the Jupiter or to the Saturn systems currently under consideration, and possible intermediate-class missions which might be proposed in NASA’s New Frontiers category. One of the principal benefits of future 30 m-class giant telescopes would be to improve the spatial resolution of maps of temperature and composition which are derived from observations of thermal emission at mid-infrared and longer wavelengths. In many situations, this spatial resolution is competitive with those of the relevant instruments on the spacecraft themselves.  相似文献

The MErcury, Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission will send the first spacecraft to orbit the planet Mercury. A miniaturized set of seven instruments, along with the spacecraft telecommunications system, provide the means of achieving the scientific objectives that motivate the mission. The payload includes a combined wide- and narrow-angle imaging system; γ-ray, neutron, and X-ray spectrometers for remote geochemical sensing; a vector magnetometer; a laser altimeter; a combined ultraviolet-visible and visible-infrared spectrometer to detect atmospheric species and map mineralogical absorption features; and an energetic particle and plasma spectrometer to characterize ionized species in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

Dynamic spectra of a Jovian non-Io-A storm recorded simultaneously by the Voyager 1 spacecraft and by the Kiiminki radio spectrograph are compared. It seems that the emission beam of the storm co-rotates with the planet and has a sloped leading edge, in accordance with the result of Maeda and Carr (1984).  相似文献

Terrestrial myriametric radiation (non-thermal continuum) observed by the GEOS 1 spacecraft is used to determine the radial profile of plasma density at the equatorial plasmapause. The method utilises the properties of a radio window through which the radiation propagates. The radial density profile obtained by remote sensing is compared with that implied from natural electrostatic emissions as the spacecraft approaches the equatorial source region. The TMR profile appears to be that of the cold plasma whereas the frequencies of the intense non-equatorial emissions beyond the plasmapause are governed by the hot and cold components. Ray-tracing and polarisation computations indicate that a simplistic interpretation of direction-finding measurements using the spinning dipole technique could lead to erroneous source directions under certain circumstances. In such cases if the spacecraft orientation is known corrections can be applied to yield the true direction.  相似文献

The outer region of the jovian system between ∼50 and 300 jovian radii from the planet is found to be the host of a previously unknown dust population. We used the data from the dust detector aboard the Galileo spacecraft collected from December 1995 to April 2001 during Galileo's numerous traverses of the outer jovian system. Analyzing the ion amplitudes, calibrated masses and speeds of grains, and impact directions, we found about 100 individual events fully compatible with impacts of grains moving around Jupiter in bound orbits. These grains have moderate eccentricities and a wide range of inclinations—from prograde to retrograde ones. The radial number density profile of the micrometer-sized dust is nearly flat between about 50 and 300 jovian radii. The absolute number density level (∼10 km−3 with a factor of 2 or 3 uncertainty) surpasses by an order of magnitude that of the interplanetary background. We identify the sources of the bound grains with outer irregular satellites of Jupiter. Six outer tiny moons are orbiting the planet in prograde and fourteen in retrograde orbits. These moons are subject to continuous bombardment by interplanetary micrometeoroids. Hypervelocity impacts create ejecta, nearly all of which get injected into circumjovian space. Our analytic and numerical study of the ejecta dynamics shows that micrometer-sized particles from both satellite families, although strongly perturbed by solar tidal gravity and radiation pressure, would stay in bound orbits for hundreds of thousands of years as do a fraction of smaller grains, several tenths of a micrometer in radius, ejected from the prograde moons. Different-sized ejecta remain confined to spheroidal clouds embracing the orbits of the parent moons, with appreciable asymmetries created by the radiation pressure and solar gravity perturbations. Spatial location of the impacts, mass distribution, speeds, orbital inclinations, and number density of dust derived from the data are all consistent with the dynamical model.  相似文献

Origin of the atmospheres of the terrestrial planets   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The monotonic decrease in the atmospheric abundance of 36Ar per gram of planet in the sequence, Venus, Earth, and Mars has been assumed to reflect some conditions in the primitive solar nebula at the time of formation of the planetary atmospheres, having to do either with the composition of the nebula itself or the composition of the trapped gases in small solid bodies in the nebula. Behind such hypotheses lies the assumption that planetary atmospheres steadily gain components. However, not only can gases enter atmospheres; they may also be lost from atmospheres both by adsorption into the planetary interior and by loss into space as a result of collisions with minor and major planetesimals. In this paper a necessarily qualitative discussion is given of the problem of collisions with minor planetesimals, a process called atmospheric cratering or atmospheric erosion, and a discussion is given of atmospheric loss accompanying collision of a planet with a major planetesimal, such as may have produced the Earth's Moon.  相似文献

The Cassini spacecraft will arrive at Saturn in 2004 carrying the Huygens probe. The beginning of the Cassini tour at Saturn has been redesigned to achieve a different relative orbiter/probe geometry in order to compensate for the probe relay receiver design flaw that was discovered during tests in February 2000. This paper presents a numerical simulation of the Huygens atmospheric entry and descent trajectory and the Cassini flyby trajectory during the probe mission. A variety of parameters that are crucial for the probe system and its scientific payload have been calculated and analyzed together with an assessment of their uncertainties. Furthermore the orbiter/probe relay link was simulated in order to assess any potential data loss on the basis of an analytical model of the actual Huygens receiver onboard the Cassini spacecraft. The redesigned Cassini/Huygens mission satisfies all science and engineering requirements and assures the best possible radio link for the entire nominal mission duration.  相似文献

Two coherently related radio signals transmitted from Voyager 1 at wavelengths of 13 cm (S-band) and 3.6 cm (X-band) were used to probe the equatorial atmosphere of Titan. The measurements were conducted during the occultation of the spacecraft by the satellite on November 12, 1980. An analysis of the differential dispersive frequency measurements did not reveal any ionization layers in the upper atmosphere of Titan. The resolution was approximately 3 × 103 and 5 × 103 electrons/cm3 near the evening and morning terminators, respectively. Abrupt signal changes observed at ingress and egress indicated a surface radius of 2575.0 ± 0.5 km, leading to a mean density of 1.881 ± 0.002 g cm?3 for the satellite. The nondispersive data were used to derive profiles in height of the gas refractivity and microwave absorption in Titan's troposphere and stratosphere. No absorption was detected; the resolution was about 0.01 dB/km at the 13-cm wavelength. The gas refractivity data, which extend from the surface to about 200 km altitude, were interpreted in two different ways. In the first, it is assumed that N2 makes up essentially all of the atmosphere, but with very small amounts of CH4 and other hydrocarbons also present. This approach yielded a temperature and pressure at the surface of 94.0 ± 0.7°K and 1496 ± 20 mbar, respectively. The tropopause, which was detected near 42 km altitude, had a temperature of 71.4 ± 0.5°K and a pressure of about 130 mbar. Above the tropopause, the temperature increased with height, reaching 170 ± 15°K near the 200-km level. The maximum temperature lapse rate observed near the surface (1.38 ± 0.10°K/km) corresponds to the adiabatic value expected for a dry N2 atmosphere—indicating that methane saturation did not occur in tbis region. Above the 3.5-km altitude level the lapse rate dropped abruptly to 0.9 ± 0.1°K/km and then decreased slowly with increasing altitude, crossing zero at the tropopause. For the N2 atmospheric model, the lapse rate transition at the 3.5-km level appears to mark the boundary between a convective region near the surface having the dry adiabatic lapse rate, and a higher stable region in radiative equilibrium. In the second interpretation of the refractivity data, it is assumed, instead, that the 3.5 km altitude level corresponds to the bottom of a CH4 cloud layer, and that N2 and CH4 are perfectly mixed below this level. These assumptions lead to an atmospheric model which below the clouds contains about 10% CH4 by number density. The temperature near the surface is about 95°K. Arguments concerning the temperature lapse rates computed from the radio measurements appear to favor models in which methane forms at most a limited haze layer high in the troposphere.  相似文献

The characteristics of spikes observed in the occultation light curves of β Scorpii by Jupiter are reviewed and discussed. Using a model in which the refractivity (density) gradients in the Jovian atmosphere are parallel to the local gravitational field, the spikes are shown to yield information about (i) the [He]/-[H2] ratio in the atmosphere, (ii) the fine scale density structure of the atmosphere and (iii) high-resolution images of the occulted stars. The spikes also serve as indicators for ray crossing. Observational limits are placed on the magnitude of horizontal refractivity gradients; these appear to be absent on scales of a few kilometers at altitudes corresponding to number densities less than 2 × 1014 cm?3. Spikes are produced by atmospheric density variations, perhaps due to atmospheric layers, density waves or turbulence. To discriminate among these possibilities, future occultation observations should be made from a number of observation sites at two or more wavelengths simultaneously with high time resolution techniques. Given a large telescope and suitable observing techniques, useful information about Jupiter's atmosphere can be obtained from future occultations of early-type stars as faint as V ~ + 6–7.  相似文献

A novel two-phase hybrid controller is proposed to optimize propellant consumption during multiple spacecraft rendezvous maneuvers in Low Earth Orbit. This controller exploits generated differentials in aerodynamic drag on each involved chaser spacecraft to effect a propellant-free trajectory near to the target spacecraft during the first phase of the maneuver, and then uses a fuel optimal control strategy via continuous low-thrust engines to effect a precision dock during the second phase. In particular, by varying the imparted aerodynamic drag force on each of the chaser spacecraft, relative differential accelerations are generated between each chaser and the target spacecraft along two of the three translational degrees of freedom. In order to generate this required differential, each chaser spacecraft is assumed to include a system of rotating flat panels. Additionally, each chaser spacecraft is assumed to have continuous low-thrust capability along the three translational degrees of freedom and full-axis attitude control. Sample simulations are presented to support the validity and robustness of the proposed hybrid controller to variations in the atmospheric density along with different spacecraft masses and ballistic coefficients. Furthermore, the proposed hybrid controller is validated against a complete nonlinear orbital model to include relative navigation errors typical of carrier-phase differential GPS (CDGPS). Limitations of the proposed controller appear relative to the target spacecraft’s orbit eccentricity and a general characterization of the atmospheric density. Bounds on these variables are included to provide a framework within which the proposed hybrid controller can effect an extremely low propellant rendezvous of multiple chaser spacecraft to a desired target spacecraft.  相似文献

The relatively high contrast between planetary and solar low-frequency radio emissions suggests that the low-frequency radio range may be well adapted to the direct detection of exoplanets. We review the most significant properties of planetary radio emissions (auroral as well as satellite induced) and show that their primary engine is the interaction of a plasma flow with an obstacle in the presence of a strong magnetic field (of the flow or of the obstacle). Scaling laws have been derived from solar system planetary radio emissions that relate the emitted radio power to the power dissipated in the various corresponding flow–obstacle interactions. We generalize these scaling laws into a “radio-magnetic” scaling law that seems to relate output radio power to the magnetic energy flux convected on the obstacle, this obstacle being magnetized or unmagnetized. Extrapolating this scaling law to the case of exoplanets, we find that hot Jupiters may produce very intense radio emissions due to either magnetospheric interaction with a strong stellar wind or to unipolar interaction between the planet and a magnetic star (or strongly magnetized regions of the stellar surface). In the former case, similar to the magnetosphere–solar wind interactions in our solar system or to the Ganymede–Jupiter interaction, a hecto-decameter emission is expected in the vicinity of the planet with an intensity possibly 103–105 times that of Jupiter's low frequency radio emissions. In the latter case, which is a giant analogy of the Io–Jupiter system, emission in the decameter-to-meter wavelength range near the footprints of the star's magnetic field lines interacting with the planet may reach 106 times that of Jupiter (unless some “saturation” mechanism occurs). The system of HD179949, where a hot spot has been tentatively detected in visible light near the sub-planetary point, is discussed in some details. Radio detectability is addressed with present and future low-frequency radiotelescopes. Finally, we discuss the interests of direct radio detection, among which access to exoplanetary magnetic field measurements and comparative magnetospheric physics.  相似文献
