A quiet-time Pc 5 event (designated Spacequake) of March 18, 1974, first noted on the Fort Churchill magnetopram, was studied using global data. Its amplitude was found to be largest in the northern part of the auroral zone and its period seemed to increase with latitude. The clockwise polarization of the event noted at Baker Lake and higher latitudes changed to counterclockwise at Fort Churchill in X-Y, X-Z and Y-Z planes. The resonance of a field line (L ? 10) excited due to an instability of the Kelvin-Helmholtz type may have given rise to the observed event. It is conjectured that the cause of instability at this high altitude was internal convection of the magnetosphere. Similar quiet-time events from four Canadian observatories were selected from approximately 11 years of magnetograms and their statistical analysis revealed that (i) occurrences maximized near dawn and dusk (ii) the amplitude-latitude profile peaked at Great Whale River (L ? 6.67), (iii) periods increased with increasing geomagnetic latitudes, (iv) a large number of events occurred in January, February and March every year, and (v) frequency of occurrence increased with increasing sunspot numbers. Comparison of these results with those available in the literature from analyses of satellite data clearly indicate that quiet-time Pc 5 events (Spacequakes) originate in the outer magnetosphere.  相似文献

The influence of active processes on the Sun and their response on the dynamics of Earth’s artificial satellites has been investigated. The relationship between the characteristics of solar activity and variations of the periods P of the orbital motion of Earth’s artificial satellites has been found. These variations mainly indicate the variations in the Earth’s atmosphere density caused by solar activity (index F10.7) and geomagnetic activity (ΣKp index). High values of the correlation coefficients between P and F10.7 (–0.77…–0.91) and between P and ΣKp (–0.67…–0.89) exhibit significant effect of solar and geomagnetic activity on the orbital periods of satellites.  相似文献

Geomagnetic pulsations, in the period range 10–150 sec, have been analysed from five stations; Eskdalemuir (L = 3.1), Lerwick (L = 4.0), St. Anthony (L = 4.9), Sodankyla (L = 5.3) and Tromsø (L = 6.6). The results of 12 observatory years' worth of data are presented in the form of contour maps showing the frequency of occurrence of the pulsations as a function of Kp index and of local time. The maps show that a ground based observatory is more likely to record shorter period oscillations (pc 3) when the geomagnetic field line linking the station with the southern hemisphere passes through the plasmatrough than when the observatory field line links the plasmasphere. The peak occurrence of pc 3 for the observatories considered is at 08:45 hr ± 1 hr LT and is related to the observatory L value and the average night-time Kp index by the equation, L = 8.1 ? 1.2Kp. At Eskdalemuir, the spectrum is broader band than the other stations and tends to divide into two peaks; the pc 3 (20 sec) peak tends to occur when the plasmapause has moved in close to the observatory; while the pc 4 (60 sec) peak occurs when the Kp values have been lower and the plasmapause is further away at higher latitudes.  相似文献

The propagation of the geomagnetic effect into the exosphere is investigated based on a free-flight particle kinetic model of exospheric densities and temperatures. Exobasic neutral gas conditions and their variations during a geomagnetic storm occurrence are adopted as given by the OGO-6 model. The contributions of particles originating at different exobasic locations to the density and temperature at exospheric regions are taken into account according to the time needed to reach these regions. A short-time geomagnetic variation of exobasic conditions is simulated by a Gaussianshaped Ap -index variation with an FWHM of 20 min. It is then shown that the relative amplitude and the half width of the geomagnetic density variation increase strongly with exospheric heights. The density peak and the main temperature peak are shown to be delayed by more than one and two hours, respectively, at heights above 10,000 km. The temperature variation changes from a singlepeaked to a double-peaked structure at greater exospheric heights. It is shown that the exospheric density response to geomagnetic disturbances is detectable in observations of the geocoronal He-1-584 Å resonance radiation.  相似文献

The fluxes of energetic particles under the radiation belts are studied using data obtained in the experiments onboard the CORONAS-I and CORONAS-F satelites. The spatial structure of the distributions of proton fluxes with E p > 1 MeV both near the geomagnetic equator on L ≤ 1.2 and at high latitudes on L ~ 3.5–6.5 as well as the particle flux variations with geomagnetic activity are analyzed. The scattering processes that lead to particle precipitation and, in particular, the scattering of protons as they interact with VLF emission and the scattering when the particle motion becomes nonadiabatic are considered. We compare the data on particle dynamics during geomagnetic disturbances of various kinds to determine whether the physical processes that lead to particle precipitation are a manifestation of the geoefficiency of a given magnetic storm or they are controlled by internal magnetospheric conditions.  相似文献

Short-term variations δf0F2 in the values of the critical frequency of the ionospheric F2 region in middle latitudes due to solar and geomagnetic activities have been investigated. Diurnal and seasonal features of the energy flow from the auroral into midlatitude ionosphere are revealed. It is shown that they could be taken into account if instead of the 3-hour geomagnetic indices or their daily averages a new index is employed which characterizes the average level of geomagnetic activity over intervals of time no less than nine hours usually during the evening and night hours. A technique for short-term predicting δf0F2 in the midlatitude ionosphere is developed which employs the indices of solar and geomagnetic activities, and errors in the predictions are estimated.  相似文献

With the aid of the Akasofu's energy coupling function between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, we have made in this paper an analysis of about 20 geomagnetic storms recorded at Beijing during the period of years 1966 to 1972. There is a close correlation between the energy coupling function ? and the geomagnetic indices ap and Kp. All in all an empirical formula as ? ~ 1?2 × 1017ap has been found for the geomagnetic storms occurred in a low latitude station, i.e. Beijing of China. Comparisons of the horizontal component Hmax (in γ) and ?(1018 erg s?1) in Table 1 indicate that the development of storm main phase at Beijing depends very much on the ? values thus involved. Also, these are well illustrated for several individual storms as mentioned in the second section of the paper. In concluding this paper some brief discussions are made and included. It is hoped that geomagnetic observations in the middle and low latitudes from our vast country should make further contributions to the study of solar wind-magnetosphere coupling, including the Akasofu's energy coupling function.  相似文献

Time-varying solutions of the full continuity equation for electrons in the F2-region are obtained. The effects of production, loss, diffusion and electrodynamic ‘E × B’ drift are taken into account. The ‘E × B’ drift term consists of a solar and a lunar component. The solar component of drift is assumed diurnal with 14.6m/sec maximum upward speed at mid-day. The lunar component is assumed sinusoidal with period of half lunar day and amplitude one tenth of the solar drift; the phase is assumed to remain constant in lunar time, in accordance with Chapman's phase law.The results show that the lunar variations in the F2-region are markedly dependent on solar time and latitude. It is also shown that the average semi-diurnal lunar variations in NmF2 and hmF2 at any particular lunar time are almost opposite in phase to each other (i.e. out of phase by 6 hr) in the magnetic equatorial zone, and out of phase by 2 hr at moderate latitudes. The phase of δhmF2 is 10 hr at low latitudes and 9 hr at moderate latitudes. The phase of δNmF2 is 4 hr at low latitudes and 11 lunar hr at moderate latitudes. The results also show that the phase of the lunar semi-monthly oscillations in NmF2 undergoes a rapid shift of about 5 lunar hr in going from 8 to 12° and the so called phase reversal occurs at about 10° lat at which the amplitude of NmF2. becomes extremely small. These and other results are in good agreement with observations. Thus it is shown that the main features of the observed lunar tidal variations of the F2-region within 20° of the magnetic equator can be explained satisfactorily by the superposition of a small lunar drift on a large solar drift.  相似文献

The very-low-frequency emission known as “chorus” has been studied for four Australian recording stations. The phenomenon exhibits a maximum of occurrence at about geomagnetic latitude 60° and occurs only about one-tenth as frequently at geomagnetic latitude 45°. It was never definitely observed at geomagnetic latitude 35°. Marked diurnal variations are present with morning peaks for all stations and also an evening peak at Adelaide and Hobart. Analysis of the diurnal variations suggests that two different mechanisms are involved. The average strength of chorus increases with increasing value of K-index at lower latitude stations and shows a maximum at moderate values of the index for geomagnetic latitude 61°. This is interpreted as meaning that the region of maximum average-chorus-strength moves towards lower latitudes at times of magnetic disturbance.  相似文献

The geomagnetic activity is the result of the solar wind–magnetosphere interaction. It varies following the basic 11-year solar cycle; yet shorter time-scale variations appear intermittently. We study the quasi-periodic behavior of the characteristics of solar wind (speed, temperature, pressure, density) and the interplanetary magnetic field (B x , B y , B z , β, Alfvén Mach number) and the variations of the geomagnetic activity indices (D ST, AE, A p and K p). In the analysis of the corresponding 14 time series, which span four solar cycles (1966?–?2010), we use both a wavelet expansion and the Lomb/Scargle periodograms. Our results verify intermittent periodicities in our time-series data, which correspond to already known solar activity variations on timescales shorter than the sunspot cycle; some of these are shared between the solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices.  相似文献

A gridded spherical electrostatic analyzer aboard Injun 5 has been used to measure fluxes of thermal and hyperthermal electrons at subauroral latitudes in the midnight sector of the northern ionosphere between altitudes of 2500 and 850 km. Due to the offset between the geomagnetic and geographic poles hyperthermal fluxes, consisting of energetic photoelectrons that have escaped from the sunlit southern hemisphere are observed along orbits over the Atlantic Ocean and North America but not over Asia. The ambient electron temperatures (Te) near 2500 km have their highest values at trough latitudes for all longitudes. At altitudes near 1000 km elevated electron temperatures in the trough were not a consistent feature of the data. Equatorward of the trough, in the longitude sector to which conjugate photoelectrons have access, Te ~ 4000 K at 2500 km and ~ 3000 K at 1000 km. For regions with the conjugate point in darkness Te ? 2300 K over the 1000–2500 km altitude range. The effective thermal characteristics of conjugate photoelectrons are studied as functions of altitude and latitude. The observations indicate that (1) at trough latitudes elevated electron temperatures in the topside ionosphere are mostly produced by sources other than conjugate photoelectrons, and (2) at subtrough latitudes, in the Alantic Ocean-North American longitude sector, conjugate photoelectrons contribute significantly to the heating of topside electrons. Much of the conjugate photoelectron energy is deposited at altitudes >2500 km then conducted along magnetic field lines into the ionosphere.  相似文献

Density measurements at 140, 160, 180 and 200km from the AE-C accelerometer experiment during 1974 are analyzed by least-squares multiple linear regression. The resulting empirical model is compared to the widely-used Jacchia (1971) model which is primarily based on satellite orbital decay data above 200 km. The semiannual and geomagnetic (Kp) variations derived from the AE-C data set are in good agreement with Jacchia's predictions. However, individual magnetic storm responses often exceed such average representations of the geomagnetic effect by more than a factor of two. The density is more variable with respect to the daily 10.7cm solar flux than Jacchia's model predicts. The regression analysis reveals a positive correlation with the absolute value of the geographic latitude. The statistical weakness of this latter effect reflects the transient, aperiodic nature of high-latitude heating events related to magnetic activity, which can only be properly analyzed on an individual basis. Finally, the sub-solar bulge effect enters the regression equation with about half the amplitude predicted by the Jacchia model at these heights.  相似文献

The problem of the ionospheric disturbances associated with geomagnetic storms is examined with the goal of searching for a relationship between the time-developments of the two phenomena. Faraday rotation measurements of total electron content (NT) are used to monitor the ionospheric F-region at a mid-latitude site, while a variety of geomagnetic parameters are examined as possible ways of following the geomagnetic variations. The ionospheric and geomagnetic data taken during 28 individual storms from 1967 to 1969 are used to search for a predictive scheme which can be tested using data from 17 storms in 1970. The specific aim is to find the geomagnetic parameter whose time-development can best forecast whether or not the ionospheric response will include an initial positive phase prior to the normally extended period of F-region depletions. Correlations between NT and the geomagnetic indices Kp, and equatorial Dst(H) prove to be wholly inadequate. The local times of main-phase-onset (MPO) determined from the equatorial Dst(H) indices as well as from local horizontal component data, also prove to be unsatisfactory. The best correlations are obtained using local measurements of the total geomagnetic field (F). These results show that a storm commencement (SC) will produce an enhancement in nt during the afternoon period following the SC unless there is an intervening post-midnight period with a strong depression of the geomagnetic field. Operationally this is taken to be a depression in F of at least 100γ near 03:00 LT  相似文献

A superposed-epoch method is used to investigate the occurrence of spread-F at Huancayo relative to days of high sunspot activity and also relative to days of high geomagnetic activity. A good correlation is found between days of high Ap index and high spread-F occurrence for a pre-sunrise interval of a few hours. When 3-hourly kp indices are used they show a peak value approximately 6 hr prior to an above-average occurrence of spread-F. It is suggested that this pre-sunrise spread-F is associated with ionospheric height rises which are produced by travelling disturbances, initiated in polar regions at times of high geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

A three-dimensional, time-dependent model of thermospheric dynamics has been used to interpret recent experimental measurements of high altitude winds by rocket-borne and ground-based techniques. The model is global and includes a self-consistent treatment of the non-linear, Coriolis and viscosity terms. The solar u.v. and e.u.v. energy input provides the major energy source for the thermosphere. Solar u.v. and e.u.v. heating appear to be inadequate to explain observed thermospheric temperatures if e.u.v. heating efficiency (ε) lies in the range 0.3 < ε < 0.35. If the recent solar e.u.v. data are correct, then a value of ε between 0.4 and 0.45 would bring fluxes and observed temperatures into agreement. The Heppner (1977) and Volland (1978) models of high-latitude electric field are used to provide sources of both momentum (via ion drag) and energy (via Joule heating). We find that the Heppner Model CO (equivalent to Volland Model 1) is most appropriate for very quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp ? 2) while Model A (equivalent to Volland Model 2) provides the necessary enhancement at high latitudes for conditions of moderate activity (Kp ~ 4). Even with the addition of a polar electric field, there still appears to be a shortage of high-latitude energy input in that model winds tend to be 10 m s?1 poleward of observed winds under quiet or average geomagnetic conditions. This extra energy cannot be provided by enhancing the polar electric fields since the extra momentum would cause disagreement with the observed high latitude winds. High latitude particulate sources of relatively low energies, ~100 eV, seem the most likely candidates depositing their energy above about 200km. Relatively modest amounts of energy are then required, < 1010W global, to bring the model into agreement with both high- and mid-latitude neutral wind results.  相似文献

High latitude geomagnetic field lines differ significantly from a dipole geometry. Time of flight calculations using the Mead-Fairfield (1975) model of the geomagnetic field are presented for different tilt angles and Kp conditions. Typical standing wave periods of geomagnetic pulsations are estimated for three different magnetospheric cold plasma regions, corresponding to waves guided in (i) the plasmatrough, (ii) the extended plasmasphere and (iii) regions of enhanced proton density (detached plasma) within the plasmatrough.Pc4/5 pulsation studies at high latitudes are briefly reviewed and some new results from Tromso are given. Many of the observations reveal hydromagnetic waves whose location and period are consistent with ducting in a region of enhanced plasma density within the plasmatrough.  相似文献

We employ annually averaged solar and geomagnetic activity indices for the period 1960??C?2001 to analyze the relationship between different measures of solar activity as well as the relationship between solar activity and various aspects of geomagnetic activity. In particular, to quantify the solar activity we use the sunspot number R s, group sunspot number R g, cumulative sunspot area Cum, solar radio flux F10.7, and interplanetary magnetic field strength IMF. For the geomagnetic activity we employ global indices Ap, Dst and Dcx, as well as the regional geomagnetic index RES, specifically estimated for the European region. In the paper we present the relative evolution of these indices and quantify the correlations between them. Variations have been found in: i) time lag between the solar and geomagnetic indices; ii) relative amplitude of the geomagnetic and solar activity peaks; iii) dual-peak distribution in some of solar and geomagnetic indices. The behavior of geomagnetic indices is correlated the best with IMF variations. Interestingly, among geomagnetic indices, RES shows the highest degree of correlation with solar indices.  相似文献

The geomagnetic Kp-index data for the 1932–1969 period have been investigated by means of a modified power spectrum technique on the basis of overlapping 2-yr intervals. The observed 27-, and 13.5-day periodicities show an obvious solar cycle dependence through the whole period concerned. Also, periodicities in the range of 9?4 days have been observed through years of minimum and decreasing phases of solar activity. The periodicities observed are found to be related to the existence of variations in the interplanetary medium structure which modulates the geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

The paper describes the phenomenon of afternoon depression of the geomagnetic H field on quiet days near the magnetic equator in the Indian zone. These events occur most frequently around 1600 solar hr and are localized in longitude; sometimes, not seen at stations separated by even 2 hr LT. The geomagnetic disturbance tends to decrease or destroy the identity of the phenomenon. The latitudinal extent of these events is confined to the equatorial electrojet region. The events do not seem to be caused mainly by the Moon, but their occurrences are modified by the lunar age, being most frequent around new and full Moon. These events are associated with the disappearance of the q type of Es over the Equator for periods during which the H field is below the night-time level. The currents responsible for these events flow westward in the E-region and are within few degrees centred near the magnetic equator.  相似文献
