Trapped protons are responsible for the main component of LEGRIbackground. Detailed theoretical model has demonstrated that theproton-induced counting rate is two orders of magnitude larger thanthe counting rate of the diffuse gamma-ray flux. The continuous passesof LEGRI through the SAA (7 times everyday) makes very difficult thebackground modelling. Long and short lived isotopes contribute in verydifferent time scales to the proton-induced background component.The goal of this paper is to present a comparison between the long-livedbackground noise theoretical predictions and the experimental data. Theresults show an unexpected good agreement between the predicted and theobserved counting rates.  相似文献

A Monte-Carlo model of the MINISAT 01 satellite has been built. Thismodel, based on the GEANT software suite, is used to study the backgroundnoise induced in the cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) in the LEGRI detector.We find that the background noise count rate at the poles is 50%higher than at the equator. This increase is due to the effects of geomagneticrigidity cut-off. We also simulate the effects of passages through theSouth Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) with simulations showing an increase of 0.5 counts cm-2 sec-1 after the SAA, in good agreement withobservational data.  相似文献

LEGRI has been operating successfully on MINISAT-01 since its switch-on the 22nd of May 1997. HouseKeeping (HK) data have been continuously receivedfor nearly two years by LEGRI SOC in Valencia, and subsequently checked on adaily basis and then stored for long term monitoring analysis.LEGRI HouseKeeping data include three critical operating parameters:temperature, power and polarisation voltages. Six temperature sensors arespread over the different LEGRI units: Detector Unit, Data Processing Unit,High Voltage Unit and Star Sensor. Voltages are measured at eight differentpoints. Detector Unit temperature and polarisation voltage are thecritical parameters for LEGRI operation. Solid state detectors aresensitive to changes not only in polarisation but also in temperature.Around one and a half million of measurements for each of the HK fourteen parameters have been recorded and analysed. The data show a very remarkablestability, within the expected margins, and the averages are very close to theoptimal design values. Special attention has been paid to the detectorpolarisation voltages analysis with a mean value of 286 ± 2 V when the detectors are operating. Thermal control over all the LEGRI units shows a remarkable stability in their temperatures.On the detector plane a mean value of T det = 13 ± 2 °C has been found.We can therefore conclude that LEGRI as a system has been operating withinits optimal design conditions. We also want to point out the excellentperformance of the MINISAT-01 thermal control system.  相似文献

Low-inclination, low altitude Earth orbits (LEO) are of increasing importance for astrophysical satellites, due to their low background environment. Here, the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is the region with the highest amount of radiation. We study the radiation environment in a LEO (500–600 km altitude, 4° inclination) through the particle background measured by the Particle Monitor (PM) experiment onboard the BeppoSAX satellite, between 1996 and 2002. Using time series of particle count rates measured by PM we construct intensity maps and derive SAA passage times and fluences. The low-latitude SAA regions are found to have an intensity strongly decreasing with altitude and dependent on the magnetic rigidity. The SAA extent, westward drift and strength vs altitude is shown.  相似文献

The LEGRI Science Operation Center (SOC) is the single contact pointbetween the MINISAT-01 Centro de Operaciones Científicas (COC)located at Villafranca del Castillo (Madrid) and the LEGRI Consortium.Its architecture, operational procedures and associated software hasbeen developed at the Universities of Valencia and Birmingham on thescope to define a integrated Data Analysis System, able to perform thedaily follow-up of the instrument health, raw data files decompressionand archiving activities (on-line and historical). Pointing and telecommandfiles generation is also a SOC responsibility.The aim of this paper is to report the SOC activities during the two yearsof LEGRI operations. Conclusions about the SOC architecture and proceduresevolution on how to handle the operations for space-borne instrumentation,are also presented.Special attention has been paid to the operative evaluation of the pointingreconstruction solutions from the MINISAT-01 Attitude Control System bycomparing them with those obtained with the LEGRI Star Sensor. The analysisof one year of observations shows the good agreement between both sets ofdata. No systematic deviations have been found with an averaged standarddeviation of 1 degree in alpha and delta coordinates. For most of the timethe MINISAT pointing system is working slightly better than expected andwithin specifications.  相似文献

Two years after launch (04.21.97), LEGRI is operating on Minisat-01 in a LEO orbit. The LEGRI detector plane is formed by two type of gamma-ray solid state detectors: HgI2 and CdZnTe. Detectors are embedded in a box containing the FEE and DFE electronics. This box provides an effective detector passive shielding. Detector plane is multiplexed by a Coded Aperture System located at 54 cm and a Ta Collimator with a FCFOV of 22° and 2° angular resolution. The aim of this paper is to summarize the detector behaviour in three different time scales: before launch, during the in-orbit check-out period (IOC), and after two years of routine operation in space. Main results can be summarized as follows:A large fraction of the HgI2 detectors presented during LEGRI IOC very high count ratios from their first switch-on (May 1997). Therefore, they induced saturation in the on-board mass memory. After some unsuccessful attempts to reduce the count ratios by setting up different thresholds during LEGRI IOC, all of them were switched off except nine detectors in column 4, with a higher degree of stability.Oppositely, the 17 CdZnTe detectors present a remarkable stability in both their count-ratios and spectral shapes. Details about CdZnTe ground energy calibration, in-flight calibration (using the Crab) and detector stability are discussed hereafter. Detector efficiency function has been computed with the fixed flight threshold used within the calibrated energy range (20-80 KeV). It presents a maximum at 60 KeV, and decreasing efficiencies in the lower and upper energy range ends. Both, non-linear threshold cutting and the drop in the detector efficiency explain the CdZnTe computed operational efficiency response.  相似文献

The interpretation of the observed-ray burstV/V max statistic in terms of spatial distributions is model-dependent. Detection of-ray bursts requires the counting rate in one or more detectors to exceed a thresholdC lim determined from a time-dependent background rateB(t). The sampling depth of the burst detector is thus time-dependent, and, if burst sources are non-uniform in space, the observedV/V max distribution will be affected byB(t). We demonstrate this effect with a simple geometric distribution of standard candles and argue thatV/V max statistic without information on threshold variations is insufficient for rigorous data analysis. Peak count rates and threshold values must be given separately for all events in order to facilitate a meaningful comparison of observations with theoretical distribution models.  相似文献

Comets with large gas production offer a unique chance to observe a H2-flux of about 105 photon cm–2 s–1 sr–1 (1 Rayleigh) at wavelengths 8497.4 Å, 8560.2 Å and 8747.9 Å-i.e., where photon counting methods are still applicable. In the following it will be shown that population of the vibrational levels, giving rise to these quadrupole overtone transitions, is dominated by photodissociation of methane, and that the emission even of quadrupole lines is not attenuated by collisional quenching. Wavelength scanning by ±1 Å is shown to be enough to discriminate between cometary and atmospheric emissions by phase-sensitive subtraction techniques. Solid angle of <10–7 sr has to be used, whence follows that a large ground-based telescope combined with a tilting Fabry-Perotfilter is best suited for detection of the near-infrared H2-emissions at reasonable counting rates and sufficient rejection of the atmospheric background.Since H2 is supposed to be formed mainly by the photolysis of CH4, the optimum time for detection will be during approach to perihelion when, because of its high vapor pressure, methane will vaporize from the cometary nucleus. Variation of the source strength of both CH4 and its photolysis product H2 with time are particularly valuable indicators for the structure of the nucleus, its thermal history and conditions of formation. A high-resolution tilting filter photometer, which allows phase-sensitive background subtraction was used for the first time for near-infrared observations on the dust coma of Comet Kohoutek (Barbieriet al., 1974). The same technique was successfully used for the determination of an upper limit for CH4 production at 3.3 by airborne observations on the same comet (Cosmoviciet al., 1974).  相似文献

This paper presents a Hamiltonian approach to modelling spacecraft motion relative to a circular reference orbit based on a derivation of canonical coordinates for the relative state-space dynamics. The Hamiltonian formulation facilitates the modelling of high-order terms and orbital perturbations within the context of the Clohessy–Wiltshire solution. First, the Hamiltonian is partitioned into a linear term and a high-order term. The Hamilton–Jacobi equations are solved for the linear part by separation, and new constants for the relative motions are obtained, called epicyclic elements. The influence of higher order terms and perturbations, such as Earth’s oblateness, are incorporated into the analysis by a variation of parameters procedure. As an example, closed-form solutions for J2-invariant orbits are obtained.  相似文献

This review is essentially a bibliography. In the first part, work done locally on period-finding methods is discussed. Some of the topics referred to are: periodogram significance testing, identification of non-sinusoidal periodicities, and computational shortcuts useful for calculating periodograms of large data sets. A number of aspects of period-finding in ray astronomy are briefly mentioned: these include various test statistics for the presence of a periodicity, the influence of oversampling on significance levels, estimation of the pulse shape, and the specification of a flux limit in the case of a non-detection. The second part of the review deals with the analysis of stochastic astronomical time series. Topics dealt with are ARMA modelling, Kalman filtering, problems associated with O-C analyses, and continuous time ARMA modelling. Two aspects of bivariate astronomical time series are touched on, namely time domain transfer function modelling and the estimation of the lag between two irregularly observed series.  相似文献

Past, present, and forthcoming planetary rover missions to Mars and other planetary bodies are equipped with a large number of scientific cameras. The very large number of images resulting from this, combined with tight time constraints for navigation, measurements, and analyses, pose a major challenge for the mission teams in terms of scientific target evaluation. Shatter cones are the only macroscopic evidence for impact-induced shock metamorphism and therefore impact craters on Earth. The typical features of shatter cones, such as striations and horsetail structures, are particularly suitable for machine learning methods. The necessary training images do not exist for such a case; therefore, we pursued the approach of producing them artificially. Using PRo3D, a viewer developed for the interactive exploration and geologic analysis of high-resolution planetary surface reconstructions, we virtually placed shatter cones in 3-D background scenes processed from true Mars rover imagery. We use PRo3D-rendered images of such scenes as training data for machine learning architectures. Terrestrial analog studies in Ethiopia supported our lab work and were used to test the resulting neural network of this feasibility study. The result showed that our approach with shatter cones in artificial Mars rover scenes is suitable to train neural networks for automatic detection of shatter cones. In addition, we have identified several aspects that can be used to improve the training of the neural network and increase the recognition rate. For example, using background data with a higher resolution in order to have equal resolution of object (shatter cone) and Martian background and increase the number of objects that can be placed in the training data set. Also using better lighting reconstructions and a better radiometric adaption between object and Martian background would further improve the results.  相似文献

A new type of approximation is proposed to evaluate Fourier series with a great many terms. It combines Fourier series and Chebychev polynomials to represent time series over a finite time interval. On one side, the high frequencies are approximate multiples of a basic frequency to represent short periodic terms; on the other side, the slowly variable functions of the time, on a given interval, which contain terms with long periods, are approximated by Chebychev polynomials. Application is made in case of the Lunar Theory ELP which contains about 30 000 trigonometric terms. The computing time necessary to evaluate coordinates is very much reduced when we give to series the intermediary representation inF-T form, as compared to a direct substitution of the time in the arguments.One shows also on a numerical example, that the Fourier-Chebychev approximation smoothly degrades outside its range of representation.Bureau des Longitudes. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is almost completely installed at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China). The lower energy limit of the detector (E∼1 GeV) is reached with the scaler mode, i.e., recording the single particle rate at fixed time intervals. In this technique, due to its high altitude location and large area (∼6700 m2), this experiment is the most sensitive among all present and past ground-based detectors. In the energy range under investigation, signals due to local (e.g. solar GLEs) and cosmological (e.g. GRBs) phenomena are expected as significant enhancements of the counting rate over the background. In this paper, the classical and generalized Sundman time transformations are used to establish new generating set of differential equations of motion in terms of the Eulerian redundant parameters. The implementation of this set on digital computers for the commonly used independent variables is developed once and for all. Motion prediction algorithms based on these equations are developed in a recursive manner for the motions in the Earth's gravitational field with axial symmetry whatever the number of the zonal harmonic terms may be. Applications for the two types of short and long term predictions are considered for the perturbed motion in the Earth's gravitational field with axial symmetry with zonal harmonic terms up to J 36 . Numerical results proved the very high efficiency and flexibility of the developed equations.  相似文献

Ulysses was launched in October 1990, and its Solar X-ray/Cosmic Gamma-Ray Burst Experiment (GRB) has provided more than 13 years of uninterrupted observations of solar X-ray flare activity. Due to the large variation of the relative solar latitude and longitude of the spacecraft orbit with respect to the Earth, the perspective of the GRB instrument often differed significantly from that of X-ray instruments on Earth-orbiting satellites. During extended periods the GRB experiment made direct observations of flares on the hidden face of the Sun, providing a unique record of events not visible to other instruments. The small detector area of GRB and its optimization for very high counting rates minimized the effects of pulse pile-up. We interpret the spectra, time histories, and occurrence distribution patterns of GRB data in terms of “thermal feed-through”, the confusion of thermal soft X-rays and non-thermal hard X-rays. This effect is a systematic problem for scintillation-counter spectrometers observing the solar hard X-ray spectrum. This paper provides a definitive catalog of the Ulysses X-ray flare observations and discusses various features of this unique database. For the equivalent GOES range X2 – X25, we find a power-law fit for the (differential) occurrence frequency at >25 keV with slope −1.61±0.04, with no evidence for a downturn at the highest event magnitudes (for the relatively small sample of such events available in this study). If the nine most intense events are excluded because of concerns about the effects of pulse pile-up, the slope steepens to −1.75±0.08.  相似文献

First results from the VIRGO experiment (Variability of solar IRradiance and Gravity Oscillations) on the ESA/NASA Mission SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) are reported. The observations started mid-January 1996 for the radiometers and sunphotometers and near the end of March for the luminosity oscillation imager. The performance of all the instruments is very good, and the time series of the first 4–6 months are evaluated in terms of solar irradiance variability, solar background noise characteristics and p-mode oscillations. The solar irradiance is modulated by the passage of active regions across the disk, but not all of the modulation is straightforwardly explained in terms of sunspot flux blocking and facular enhancement. Helioseismic inversions of the observed p-mode frequencies are more-or-less in agreement with the latest standard solar models. The comparison of VIRGO results with earlier ones shows evidence that magnetic activity plays a significant role in the dynamics of the oscillations beyond its modulation of the resonant frequencies. Moreover, by comparing the amplitudes of different components ofp -mode multiplets, each of which are influenced differently by spatial inhomogeneity, we have found that activity enhances excitation.  相似文献

The domain of high speed optical astrophysics is still quite unexplored. The availability of 10 meter diameter telescopes offers the unique possibility to investigate variability of faint objects at submillisecond time scales. In this paper I describe the concepts of a photometer and a spectrometer for high speed astronomical observations. The instruments are based on a photon counting detector developed for high energy physics, the Visible Light Photon Counter (VLPC). The detector has a quantum efficiency in the visible as high as 88% and performs photon counting with sub microsecond time resolution. The photometer is built using VLPC arrays. Adding a grating a VLPC array can be used in a time resolved spectrograph with medium resolution. This paper develops, starting from experimental data, the concept of the two VLPC based instruments and their application to time resolved photometry and spectroscopy of compact objects (pulsars, cataclysmic variables, low mass X-ray binary systems etc) and optical counterparts of Gamma Ray Bursts. The high speed optical observations are the ideal complement to X/γ rays and gravitational wave studies. The application of the instruments to the optical photometry of pulsars, the spectrophotometry of the prompt optical flash from Gamma Ray Bursts and the study of binary systems are discussed in detail: in the last two applications the instruments offer better opportunities than existing instruments.  相似文献

A global 3-D simulation of interplanetary dynamics in June 1991   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The global dynamics of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field in June 1991 is simulated based on a fully three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical MHD model. The numerical simulation includes eight transient disturbances associated with the major solar flares of June 1991. The unique features of the present simulation are: (i) the disturbances are originated at the coronal base (1R s) and their propagation through inhomogeneous ambient solar wind is simulated out to 1.5 AU; (ii) as a background for the transients, the global steady-state solar wind structure inferred from the 3-D steady-state model (Usmanov, 1993c) is used. The parameters of the initial pulses are prescribed in terms of the near-Sun shock velocities (as inferred from the metric Type II radio burst observations) relative to the preshock steady-state flow parameters at the flare sites. The computed parameters at the Earth's location for the period 1–18 June, 1991 are compared with the available observations of the interplanetary magnetic field, solar wind velocity, density, and with variation of the geomagnetic activityK pindex.  相似文献

Exact solutions of Einstein's field equations and the laws of thermodynamics are presented in which both a comoving radiative perfect fluid (modelling the cosmic microwave background) and a non-comoving imperfect fluid (modelling the observed material content of the Universe) act as the source of the gravitational field as represented by the flat FRW line element. The tilting velocity of the imperfect fluid is associated with the peculiar velocity of our local cluster of galaxies relative to the cosmic microwave background. In these relativistic two-fluid cosmological models the temperatures of the radiation and matter fields are equal until hydrogen recombines at 4000 K, after which time thermal contact between the two fluids is broken. The models presented are physically acceptable cosmologies that are shown to give rise to numerical predictions consistent with current observations.  相似文献
