An analysis of a sample of OH megamaser galaxies is presented. It is shown that the dependence of LOH on LFIR (far infrared) is not quadratic, as previously assumed, but closer to linear. In megamaser galaxies, LC (radio continuum) LFIR1. Analysis of the data also shows that as the OH emission line width decreases, the absolute values of the pumping efficiency and maser amplification coefficient increase. The radio luminosity of the central component in these galaxies increases with a decrease in the ratio LFIR/LC, whereas the FIR luminosity remains constant. These results will, in all probability, force a reexamination of the questions of pumping and maser emission mechanisms in megamaser galaxies.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 39, No. 3, pp. 417–429, July–September, 1996.  相似文献

This is a statistical study of galaxies with a UV excess. A sample of 702 Kazarian galaxies (KG) is used. The KGs are identified with objects from the MAPS, IRAS FSC, IRAS PSC, and NVSS catalogs. The O and E magnitudes are known for more than 92% of the KGs. It is shown that the KG sample is complete up to 16m.0 in the blue and to 16m.5 in the red. More than 36% of the KGs are identified with infrared (IR) sources at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 m. Calculations of the far IR (FIR) luminosities show that 4% of the KGs are strong FIR emitters (LFIR ≥ 1011 L). More than 32% of the KGs have been identified as radio sources at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. A determination of the radio luminosities shows that the sample of KGs with known radial velocities include one powerful, LR ≥ 1025 W/Hz, radio object (Kaz 273) which is a BL Lac object. A close correlation (r=0.93) is bound between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies with a UV excess. An examination of the relationship between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies in different spectral classes shows that the correlation coefficient is higher (r=0.99) and the slope of the fit curve is larger (a=1.18) for Seyfert galaxies. Calculations of the logarithm of the ratio of the FIR and radio fluxes indicate that the sample includes 4 KGs with a radio excess, while there are none with an IR excess. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 369–379 (August 2007).  相似文献

The atomic and molecular hydrogen gas properties of a complete sample of Markarian galaxies with flux density at 60 µm higher than 1.95 Jy are presented. We present the improved far-infrared luminosity function of Markarian galaxies; and its comparison with other samples. We find that 40% of the bright IRAS galaxies of far-infrared luminosity higher than 1010.5 L are Markarian galaxies. There is an absence of correlation between HI content of Markarian galaxies and current star formation activity, implying that star formation in these systems has complex structure and it is not a simple function of the HI content. On the contrary, the H2 content of Markarian galaxies is well correlated with star formation activity. It is argued that tight correlation between HI and H2 contents is a consequence of transformation of atomic hydrogen into molecular.Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 4, pp. 636–644, October–December, 1995.  相似文献

The IR emission of 640 Markarian galaxies (MrkG), included in the IRAS Survey, is considered as an evidence for enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in these objects. About 73% of the MrkG have high far-infrared luminosities (ca. 10E + 44 erg s–1) in 1–500 mcm IR spectral band. The distribution of log(f 60/f 100), peaked at about 45 K, shows that IRAS MrkGs have a tendency to extend the relationf 60/f 100 vsL ir/L bifor normal S glaxies. They emit up to hundred times more IR energy in 40–120 mcm band than in optics. The mean ratio log L ir/L b for 621 IRAS MrkG with known redshifts is 2.2.It is suggested that there are two IR emitting components in the IRAS MrkG - a warm one connected with the UV-fluxes of the newborn massive stars, re-radiated by dust, and a cool one, originated from the dust in galactic disks and heated by the general interstellar radiation field. The warm IR luminosities and warm IR fractions are determined on the basis of IR colour-colour diagrams(25/12),(60/25), and(100/60). The mean warm IR fraction for all Mrk IRAS detected galaxies with well-defined IR fluxes is 0.83 when the grain mass absorption coefficient model withn = 0.0 is used. The dust mass responsible for the IR flux at 60 mcm is derived to be about 10E + 5M , assuming the dust clouds are optically thin, and using the dust temperatureT d 46 K (deduced from thef(60)/f(100) ratio). There is a relation betweenL irandL blwhich points out that the most IRAS MrkG have rather enhanced SFR.  相似文献

We have analyzed luminosity profiles of E galaxies studied by Strom and Strom in six clusters of galaxies. We have found a relationship between radius, luminosity, and surface brightness for galaxies in each of the clusters. A dependence of the zero point of the relation with the local projected density of galaxies is likewise found:r e proj –0.14 L 0.445 I e –0.413 . This relationship implies (i) that there is not a universal luminosity profile for elliptical galaxies, (ii) the environmental variation of radius is larger than that produced by mergers of galaxies, (iii) distance to a galaxy can be estimated from apparent magnitude, surface brightness, angular size, and apparent local projected density of galaxies.  相似文献

We present the HI observations of 94 flat spiral galaxies from RFGC (Revised Flat Galaxy Catalog) and 14 galaxies from 2MFGC (the 2MASS selected Flat Galaxy Catalog) performed with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg (Germany). HI fluxes, heliocentric radial velocities, and HI line widths are given for 65 detected galaxies. We present a mosaic of HI profiles. We calculated some of the global parameters of the galaxies and analyzed the linear correlations between them. The ratios of the total (indicative) masses of the galaxies to their luminosities lie within the range 0.4–8.2 with a mean of 3.8 (M/L), and the mean mass fraction of neutral hydrogen is 13%. Upper limits are given for the radio fluxes from 43 undetected galaxies.  相似文献

We have examined a sample of 150 elliptical galaxies taken from a recent survey (Bursteinet al., 1987) which includes also new CCD photometric data. The fits of total luminosityL versus three different diameter indicators (i.e., the effective diameterD e, theD n diameter proposed by Dressleret al. (1987), and the isophotal diameterD 0 at 25 mag arc sec–2) had given no sign of environmental effect on such quantities. A comparison with previous results based on lower quality data was carried out in order to check the reliability of different photometries and statical tools used. Our main conclusion is that the luminosity-diameter relation seems to be universal in the range of luminosities spanned by our sample; so environmental effects, if present, must be smaller than observational errors.  相似文献

The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献

Radio and optical images of early-type galaxies with dust lanes have been analyzed in order to investigate the characteristics of the radio emission and to compare it with their properties at other frequencies. Except three galaxies, the remaining sources of our sample have diffuse radio emission, which does not extend beyond the stellar disk. The radio structures are small and weak (linear sizes in the range 2–10 kpc and radio powers in the range 5×1020–5×1021W Hz–1). Our preliminary results show that in a minority of cases (the most powerful radio sources) radio emission originates in the associated galactic nuclei, where a massive black hole is harboured. On the contrary, in the less powerful among our radio galaxies, sources originating from stellar phenomena may play and important role. We have classified the galaxies with respect to the dust lane morphology, comparing it with the radio emission. The sample is too small in order to reach firm conclusions, but the lack of radio sources in early-type galaxies with dust lanes along the galaxy minor axis seems to suggest that the accretion of material does not reach the conditions necessary to trigger nuclear activity.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

Hα luminosities of a sample of galaxies in nearby compactgroups are presented. Our purpose is to study the influence of thegroup environment on the star formation rates (SFRs) of the galaxies in thegroups, provided that the Hα luminosity is a good tracer of theSFR of disc galaxies. Measuring the global L /L B of the groups – including early-type galaxies – we find that the average value of the Hα emission is not significantly different from thatmeasured for field galaxies, and that most of the groups that show thehighest level of L /L B, with respect to a set of synthetic groups built out of field galaxies, show tidal features in at least one of their members. Finally, we have exploredthe relationship between the ratio L /L B and severalrelevant dynamical parameters of the groups (velocity dispersion, crossingtime, radius and mass-to-luminosity ratio) and have found no clearcorrelation. This suggests that the exact dynamical state of a groupdoes not appear to control the SFR of the group as a whole. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An analysis of radio and FIR emission in over 1500IRAS selected galaxies produces a good linear correlationbetween radio and FIR luminosity, indicating that star formationin normal field galaxies dominates the infrared luminosityin the local volume. Galaxies with clear radio-excess (definedas having at least5 times larger radio flux over expected from FIR) are identified as hosting a radio AGN, and they account for onlyabout 1% of the whole sample. This fraction increases to 10% among themore luminous galaxies with L 1.4GHz 1023 W Hz-1 (equivalently L 60m 1011 L), however. The characteristic mid-IR excess of a Seyfert nucleus is ubiquitously present amongthe radio-excess objects, suggesting that mid-IR excess isa robust tracer of an AGN despite the high mid-IR opacity. We conclude that about 30% of the luminous infrared galaxies(L 60m 1011 L) host an AGN based on themid-IR excess, and about 40% of the mid-IR excess AGNs alsohost a radio AGN. A VLA imaging survey of a distance limited sample of IR luminousgalaxies has revealed the presence of 100 kpc scale giant radioplumes in 3 out of 9 cases (Mrk 231, Mrk 273, NGC 6240). Theirlarge spatial extent, energetics, and presence of a powerful AGN in each case suggests that an AGN is the power source. Such plumesare not detected in other ultraluminous infrared galaxies which lack clear evidence for an AGN, such as Arp 220.  相似文献

Using published flux densitiesS at low frequenciesv, radio spectra were constructed for 3C, 4C, and 4CT radio sources in Abell clusters of galaxies, radio galaxies outside Abell clusters, and quasars with known redshifts. About half the sources in rich Abell clusters (richness classesR>-2) have steep spectra between 38 and 178 MHz with spectral indices 38 178 > whereSv . However, radio galaxies outside clusters have values of 38 178 1.2, and no steep spectra were found among 170 quasars. The radio sources in rich clusters are probably confined by intergalactic gas, and the steep spectra develop over a period of 109 yr as relativistic electrons lose energy. The absence of steep spectra among quasars does not necessarily mean that quasars never occur in rich clusters of galaxies, since quasars are probably being observed only in their early high-luminosity phases. The possibility that some quasar events occur in the nuclei of the dominant cD galaxies in clusters is discussed, but quasar events may occur in more than one type of galaxy.  相似文献

The search for non thermal radio emission from clusters of galaxies is a powerful tool to investigate the existence of magnetic fields on such large scale. Unfortunately, such observations are scarce thus far, mainly because of the very faint large scale radio emission expected in clusters of galaxies. In the present contribution we will first review the status of the radio observations of clusters of galaxies, carried out with the aim of detecting large scale radio emission. We will then focus on the large scale radio emission detected at 327 MHz and 610 MHz in the Coma cluster of galaxies. The features of the detected radio emission suggest that a magnetic field with an intensity of the order of ~ 10–7 Gauss must be present on a scale of about 2 Mpc (forH o = 100km s –1 Mpc –1). The morphology of the radio emission is similar to that of the most recent X-ray images derived with ROSAT, and follows the distribution of the galaxies in the cluster. All these pieces of information will be taken into account in the discussion on the possible origin of this large scale magnetic field.  相似文献

The large-scale structures of volume-limites subsample sorted out from the CfA catalog have been analysed by percolation method. The result shows that the features in the distribution of galaxies with different luminosities are significantly different. Especially, the most luminous galaxies are likely to exhibit hierarchical clustering on a scale about 50h 50 –1 Mpc, and the least luminous galaxies in our subsamples show string-like or sheet-like character in their distribution. These results suggest that the large-scale distribution of galaxies consists of clusters or cluster cores of most luminous galaxies and the less luminous galaxies spread out from these cores with a string-like or sheet-like structure. This picture of the large-scale distribution consists with previous results from two-point correlation analysis and fractal analysis. The implication of these results has been discussed.  相似文献

The distribution of pulsars in the wide range of observed luminosities has been obtained. It is shown that the function of luminosity (FL) within 3×1026L2×1030 erg s–1 conforms to the power law dN/dLc 1 L , where =1.76±0.06. ForL3×1026 erg s–1, FL changes its inclination and may be approximated as , where 1 = 0.7±0.2. On the basis of statistical selection, including all pulsars withL>3×1028 erg s–1, the distribution of pulsars has been investigated as a function of the distance to the centreR and galactic planeZ.The obtained laws of the radial andZ-distribution of pulsars and galactic supernova remnants and also the radial distribution of types I and II supernovae in the models Sb and Sc support the hypothesis of their origin from the objects of the flat subsystem of Population I. Since there are some arguments in favour of a possible connection between supernovae I and the objects of the intermediate component of the Galaxy, one cannot exclude the possibility of supernovae explosions at the end of the evolution of stars with masses of 1.5–2M . It is also shown that pulsars and supernovae are evidently objects that are connected genetically, and, within the limits of statistical error, they have a similar birth-rate.The empirical law of the evolution of a pulsar's luminosity as a function of its true age has been obtained, according to whichL=c 2 t , wherec 2=(3.69±3.4)×1035, =1.32±0.11.  相似文献

Physical conditions are found for a hot intercloud gas in the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies. The gas temperature is determined by photoionization and Compton-scattering of the shortwave radiation of the nucleus. Using observational data for the coronal emission line [Fe x] 6374 Å, the gas densityn=104cm–3 and temperatureT=106K, typical for the distance 2 pc from the central source, are obtained. It is shown that the intercloud gas is in the state of accretion by the nucleus with a rateM10–2 M yr–1.  相似文献

At present the wave theory of the spiral structure of the galaxies includes two alternative viewpoints. Two types of spiral waves—short-wave and long-wave modes—can be excited. According to Lin and Shu (1964) the short-wave modeK is responsible for the spiral structure of the galaxies and, according to Marochniket al. (1972), the long-wave mode (K 0). In our Galaxy theK -mode corresponds to the wave with an angular rotation velocity p =11–13 kms–1 kps–1 and a radial group velocity directed from the periphery to the center. TheK 0-mode corresponds to the wave having an angular rotation velocity p =23 ± 3 kms–1 kps–1 and a radial group velocity directed from the center of the Galaxy to its periphery. The theoretical and observational evidences in favour of Marochniket al.'s (1972) model are given.  相似文献

The brightness distribution of diffuse soft X-rays in the pulse height range 0.15–0.3 keV (L-band) and 0.5–0.8 keV (M-band) are obtained over a quarter of the sky centered at the galactic anticenter with 1.5 m polypropylene window proportional counters on board a sounding rocket. In theL-band three enhanced regions are noticed on the map. They coincide with the northern and southern Hi holes and the inner part of the galactic radio Loop II.In the northern Hi hole theN H dependence of theL-band flux and the hardness ratioM/L can be fitted with a local hot plasma model with the absorption by a low velocity neutral hydrogen gas (|V|<25 km s–1) along the line of sight. The X-ray feature of Loop II is similar to that of Loop I. In the lowN H region (<3×1020 H atoms cm–2) theM/L value is lower than 0.3, whereas it varies in the range 0.1–0.4 at low latitudes (|b|<300). This fact seems to be interpreted in terms of a model that a number of hot plasma clouds contribute to X-ray emission.  相似文献

The distributionsf(z) of the redshifts for active galaxies (Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, and quasars) have been studied. Some statistically-significant maxima and minima are observed in the distributionsf(z) for these objects. The significance of peaks and gaps increases for the brighter objects, for which the samples are more complete. The clustering of the Seyfert galaxies is significantly different from that of the nearby normal galaxies. The distributionf(z) for the radio galaxies is similar to the analogous distribution for the galaxy clusters. Three of the five peaks in the distributionf(z) for the radio quasars may be caused by the selection effects. Two peaks within the intervalsz (0.5, 0.7) and (1.0, 1.1) are probably real. The corresponding scales of the QSO clustering along the line-of-sight are about 100h –1 Mpc (h is the Hubble constant in the units of 75 km s–1 Mpc–1). The possibility of some global quasi-periodical cycles for the processes of activity is discussed. The period of a cycle for the Seyfert and radio galaxies is about 1×108 years that corresponds to the distances of about 30h –1 Mpc between the shells.  相似文献

The results of the computations of the chemical evolution for a galaxy cluster are presented. The matter exchange between galaxies and intergalactic medium is taken into account. Two dependences of star formation rate on time are considered: (i) monotonously decreasing dependence characteristic of elliptical galaxies, (ii) dependence having two peaks associated with creation of spiral galaxy subsystems, with suppression of star formation at the period between maxima. It is assumed that galactic ejection is due to explosions of II-type supernova with massesm5M , and that the accretion on to a galaxy depends but weakly on the time. By comparing the obtained results with total combination of available observations, it is established that the rate of gaseous exchange between a galaxy and intergalactic medium should be rather large: 0.03M gal Gyr–1. Besides, the activity of each type of galaxy leads to an approximately equal enrichment of intergalactic gas by new elements synthesized in the stars. The existence of a large accretion on to the Galaxy leads to the decrease of primordial deuterium abundance by a factor of no more than 2 during the galaxy evolution time. It enables us to assume that the standard Big Bang model with baryon density parameter b 0.1 may be considered as true.  相似文献
