Collision of the oceanic Lough Nafooey Island Arc with the passive margin of Laurentia after 480 Ma in western Ireland resulted in the deformation, magmatism and metamorphism of the Grampian Orogeny, analogous to the modern Taiwan and Miocene New Guinea Orogens. After 470 Ma, the metamorphosed Laurentian margin sediments (Dalradian Supergroup) now exposed in Connemara and North Mayo were cooled rapidly (>35 °C/m.y.) and exhumed to the surface. We propose that this exhumation occurred mainly as a result of an oceanward collapse of the colliding arc southwards, probably aided by subduction rollback, into the new trench formed after subduction polarity reversal following collision. The Achill Beg Fault, in particular, along the southern edge of the North Mayo Dalradian Terrane, separates very low-grade sedimentary rocks of the South Mayo Trough (Lough Nafooey forearc) and accreted sedimentary rocks of the Clew Bay Complex from high-grade Dalradian meta-sedimentary rocks, suggesting that this was a major detachment structure. In northern Connemara, the unconformity between the Dalradian and the Silurian cover probably represents an eroded major detachment surface, with the Renvyle–Bofin Slide as a related but subordinate structure. Blocks of sheared mafic and ultramafic rocks in the Dalradian immediately below this unconformity surface probably represent arc lower crustal and mantle rocks or fragments of a high level ophiolite sheet entrained along the detachment during exhumation.Orogenic collapse was accompanied in the South Mayo Trough by coarse clastic sedimentation derived mostly from the exhuming Dalradian to the north and, to a lesser extent, from the Lough Nafooey Arc to the south. Sediment flow in the South Mayo Trough was dominantly axial, deepening toward the west. Volcanism associated with orogenic collapse (Rosroe and Mweelrea Formations) is variably enriched in high field strength elements, suggesting a heterogeneous enriched mantle wedge under the new post-collisional continental arc.  相似文献

A continuously cored section of more than 300 m through the Nambeet Formation and the basal part of the conformably overlying Willara Formation in the Olympic 1 petroleum well, drilled in the Canning Basin of northern Western Australia, yields valuable information that increases by more than 40% the number of precise isotopic ages available to constrain the Ordovician Period. New CA-IDTIMS U–Pb zircon ages for seven bentonite layers in the Olympic 1 core are integrated into a new conodont biostratigraphic framework for the Early Ordovician comprising four biozones recognised in this well. The weighted mean U–Pb dates range from 479.37 ± 0.16 Ma within the late Tremadocian Paroistodus proteus conodont Biozone, to 470.18 ± 0.13 Ma near the boundary between the Floian and Dapingian stages within the Jumudontus gananda conodont Biozone. The intervening Prioniodus oepikiSerratognathus bilobatus conodont Biozone (early Floian) and succeeding Oepikodus communis conodont Biozone (middle Floian) are similarly well constrained by isotopic dates centred on ca 477 Ma for the early Floian and by three ages of 473–471 Ma for the middle Floian. The seven new isotopic dates significantly increase the precision of dating for the Early Ordovician, where previously only two ages with limited or imprecise biostratigraphic control were known globally.  相似文献

A Late Ordovician (Sandbian), Scoto‐Appalachian brachiopod fauna from the Mweelrea Formation in western Ireland confirms a location for the South Mayo Trough adjacent to the Laurentian margin, characterized at this time by a succession of marine excursions over fluviatile environments. 岩相、生物区系和构造组合特征的重新研究表明,在我国南方奥陶纪可以识别出三种不同类型的构造古地理区,即扬子浅海碳酸盐岩台地相区、江南和南秦岭陆棚斜坡过渡相区和华夏陆缘岛弧和边缘盆地相区。前二者应归属于扬子地块;而沉积、生物组合特征以及槽模所指示NW320°的水流方向说明,后者似应归属于华夏地块,而不是华南地块。海南岛作为一个漂移地体,奥陶系可能属于印支地块台缘陆棚相区。年代和生物地层划分和对比研究表明,我国吉林白山大阳岔小阳桥寒武系与奥陶系界线剖面发育了完整的、具有广泛对比意义的牙形石和笔石序列,建议以牙形石Cordylodus intermedius的首现取代在分类上有争议且罕见的Iapetognathus fluctivagus,作为全球寒武系奥陶系界线划分的生物标志。湖南益阳南坝泥江口剖面保存了完整特马豆克期晚期至弗洛期早期笔石序列,建议用益阳阶取代“道保湾阶”作为我国奥陶系区域年代地层单位,易于与瑞典弗洛阶金钉子剖面对比。对宜昌附近黄花场、分乡、陈家河和普溪河等以及湖南慈利茅草铺大湾组至宝塔组含牙形石碳酸盐岩地层的系统采集和研究表明,大湾组自下而上可以分为上Oepikodus communis、Oepikodus evae (s.s.)、Periodon flabellum、Microzarkodina russica、Baltoniodus triangularis、Baltoniodus navis、B.norrlandicus和Lenodus antivariabilis等8个牙形石生物带,并讨论了它们与相关笔石带的对应关系。随着牙形石Protopederodus liripipus在黄花场和普溪河剖面宝塔组底界之上2~3 m出现以及相应碳同位素偏移,说明在扬子碳酸盐岩台地上奥陶统凯迪阶下界应置于宝塔组下部,与Hamarodus? europaeus牙形石带近底部大致相当或接近。据高分辨率离子探针(SHRIMP-II)锆石U-Pb年龄测定,宜昌岩屋咀晚奥陶世五峰组底部Dicellograptus complexus笔石带之下20 cm所发现斑脱岩夹层的年龄为(448.6±4.8) Ma;而田家场Paraorthograptus pacificus笔石带顶部斑脱岩夹层的年龄为(446.5±2.1) Ma,暗示宜昌地区五峰组大约经历了5.4 Ma的沉积时间。  相似文献

塔里木盆地中央隆起区的中—上奥陶统灰岩相地层露头分布在巴楚良里塔格地区的一间房—唐王城。以牙形刺动物群为依据厘定3个组的时代,从下至上为一间房组(Periodus flabellum层、Pygodus serra层,属达瑞威尔阶)、吐木休克组(Pygodus anserinus层、Baltoniodus alobatus带,属桑比阶)和良里塔格组(含B.confluens动物群层,属凯迪阶下部)。一间房组的开始标志了新一期的海进,此组下段发育1期藻丘,中段发育1期藻丘、1期瓶筐石礁丘和3—4期瓶筐石—棘屑滩,上段代表了海水加深至浪基面之下的过程;吐木休克组沉积过程中达到了海进最大值,为凝缩沉积;良里塔格组代表了逐渐海退的过程,由浅滩和3期藻丘建造组成。  相似文献

This work presents the data on the structure, geochronology, and formation settings of the Ordovician sedimentary and volcanogenic-sedimentary complexes of the Sterlitamak, Mariev, and Imanburluk structural and formational zones located in the western and northwestern frames of the Kokchetav massif (Northern Kazakhstan). In addition, the results of detailed stratigraphic, geochemical, and geochronological studies of the reference section of the Ordovician deposits of the Mariev Zone are given. The studied section is composed of carbonate, terrigenous, and less commonly volcanogenic-sedimentary deposits, confined to a wide stratigraphic interval from Tremadocian Stage of the Lower Ordovician to the lower Sandbian Stage of the Upper Ordovician. For the first time, the study of conodont assemblages made it possible to establish the Early to Middle Ordovician age of the most ancient limestone–dolomite sequence, which was previously conventionally attributed to the Cambrian. The above-lying tuffaceous–terrigenous Kupriyanovka Formation is now attributed to the Middle Ordovician. On the basis of compositional features of the lithoclastic tuffs composing the middle part of the formation, we assume that it was formed within the island arc zone. Limestones from the base of the youngest terrigenous–carbonate Kreshchenovka Formation are attributed to the lower part of the Sandbian Stage of the Upper Ordovician. The study of the geochronology of detrital zircons from terrigenous rocks of the limestone–dolomite sequence has shown that the Early Neoproterozoic quartzite–schist sequences of the Kokchetav massif were the most probable provenance area during its deposition. It was established that there was the change of sedimentation environments from closed lagoons to a relatively deep sea basin with normal salinity and intense circulation of water masses in the northwestern frame of the Kokchetav massif during the Ordovician. During this period of time, there was a sufficiently high level of erosion of provenance areas that resulted in the deposition of thick strata of terrigenous material. A general tendency of the deepening of sedimentation environments from the Early to Late Ordovician was interrupted by sea level rises in the Dapingian and early Darriwilian ages.  相似文献

Despite over a century of geological investigation, the Ordovician evolution of South Mayo, western Ireland, is still imperfectly understood. An example of this is the supposed lateral equivalence of two formations within the succession, the Rosroe and Derrylea Formations of Arenig age, exposed on opposite limbs of a major east–west syncline. These formations exhibit characteristics which suggest that they were not deposited in the same basin. Both formations contain tuff horizons. Geochemical analysis of these tuffs shows that each formation contains chemically distinct volcanic signatures suggesting deposition in separate sub‐basins. Previously the Rosroe Formation on the south limb of the syncline was considered the coarse‐grained proximal equivalent of the finer‐grained Derrylea Formation, both being deposited in a deep‐water fan environment. Previously published palaeocurrent data together with new data show the Rosroe Formation to have been derived from the northeast and therefore it cannot be the proximal equivalent of the Derrylea Formation. Additionally, the two formations show different and distinct associations of heavy mineral assemblages. It is suggested that one explanation for these data is that both formations were deposited in separate sub‐basins controlled by oblique slip sinistral faults, similar in some respects to the Cenozoic basins of the Gulf of California. In the Irish case these faults would have been largely buried by later Ordovician sedimentation. Some models for the Ordovician evolution of this area postulate the presence of an initial oceanic arc situated above a southward directed subduction zone. The presence of thick proximal submarine tuffs derived from an arc environment in the Rosroe Formation suggest that at least by this time the subduction zone was in fact northward directed and outboard of the arc. Carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of Lower-Middle Ordovician carbonate rocks in the northwestern Russian Platform (eastern Ladoga Klint, Lynna River, and Babino quarry sections) are considered. In the studied section interval, average δ13C and δ18O values are 0 ± 0.5 and ?5 ± 0.5‰ (V-PDB), respectively. Two closely-spaced negative carbon isotope excursions with the amplitude of 2‰ are established near the Lower-Middle Ordovician boundary (between the Floian and Dapingian stages). The lower part of the Darriwilian Stage is marked by the gradual decrease in δ13C values to 1‰. Excursions of δ13C do not correlate with δ18O variations and can be considered as primary. The carbon isotope event defined at the Lower-Middle Ordovician boundary is traceable at the interregional level and represents a promising stratigraphic reference level. It may likely be explained by decrease in the relative rate of organic matter burial due to sea level fall and expansion of well-aerated shallow-water basins with a low primary production of phytoplankton.  相似文献

The western Ireland Ordovician stratigraphy has been previously used to constrain the timing of docking of an island arc and its fore‐arc basin with the margin of Laurentia for the British and Irish Caledonides. New field relationships and age data indicate that one of the key formations, the Rosroe Formation (459.2 ± 0.8 and 465.1 ± 2.1 Ma), and its supposed lateral equivalent, the Maumtrasna Formation are younger than previously interpreted. New age data for a tuff band in the Maumtrasna Formation (468.9 ± 1.3 Ma) also support previous studies showing it can be correlated to the adjacent Mweelrea Formation. The new field evidence, age data and geochemistry contradict some previous studies and show that the Maumtrasna, Rosroe and Derrylea formations can no longer be considered lateral equivalents. Based on the new stratigraphy a revised tectonic model is required with sedimentation in this part of the Caledonides taking place in a fore‐arc basin outboard of a continental arc and the oceanic arc was an along‐strike equivalent of this arc situated in an embayment of the Laurentian margin. An assemblage of Early Ordovician dichograptids has been discovered in a spotted slate from the Omeo Metamorphic Complex just north of Eskdale in northeast Victoria. Identifiable species present are Tetragraptus fruticosus (4 br.), T. acclinans, and Didymograptus cf. D. ensjoensis. Together these indicate an age corresponding to zone Bel of the early Bendigonian. They are therefore the first recorded fossils of pre‐Darriwilian age discovered east of the Howqua Zone in Victoria. The depositional history of the Wagga Trough is thus demonstrated to have commenced at least early in the Ordovician, rather than in the late Middle Ordovician as previously thought.  相似文献

Data are provided on the new Ordovician stage standard of the International Stratigraphic Chart: Tremadocian, Floian, Dapingian, Darriwilian, Sandbian, Katian, and Hirnantian. Graptolite and conodont zonal and infrazonal successions are used for a precise estimation of the chrono- stratigraphic position of the boundaries of the previous and newly proposed Ordovician regional stratigraphic units (horizons) in the western Altai–Sayan Folded Area. The chronostratigraphic position of the boundaries of most of the Ordovician formations showing a wide lateral distribution in southern Siberia has been described in detail in terms of the new stage standard of the General Stratigraphic Scale of Russia.  相似文献

Three different species of the Ordovician genus Erraticodon Dzik are described and illustrated. Erraticodon patu Cooper is reported from the Lower–Midde Ordovician strata of the Acoite and Alto del Cóndor formations. E. cf. Erraticodon balticus and Erraticodon hexianensis from Middle Ordovician carbonate deposits of the San Juan Formation are analyzed and compared to specimens of these species from Australia, China, Newfoundland, and Baltica. E. patu and E. hexianensis are recorded for first time in the San Juan Formation of Precordillera. The elements of E. cf. E. balticus resemble closely E. balticus Dzik but lack the important denticle on the posterior process of the S elements. An evaluation of the stratigraphic occurrences of these species relative to those of key Lower and Middle Ordovician conodont species such as Trapezognathus diprion Lindström, Oepikodus intermedius Serpagli, Baltoniodus triangularis (Lindström), Baltoniodus navis Lindström, Yangtzeplacognathus crassus (Chen and Zhang) and Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus (Viira) indicates they value for biostratigraphic correlation.  相似文献

The Ordovician mafic volcanic rocks in the Parkes region of New South Wales occur as three distinct packages of volcaniclastic and coherent volcanic rocks and minor limestone that formed part of an oceanic island arc succession. The oldest package is the Early Ordovician Nelungaloo Volcanics and overlying Yarrimbah Formation. These formations consist of volcanic siltstone, sandstone, polymictic breccia, conglomerate facies interpreted as moderately deep-water turbidites and coarser grained debris-flow deposits emplaced in the medial to distal part of a subaqueous volcaniclastic apron flanking an active volcanic centre(s). Broadly conformable massive to brecciated andesites in the apron deposits are interpreted as synsedimentary sills and/or lava flows. A hiatus in volcanism occurred between the Bendigonian and early Darriwilian (ca 476 – 466 Ma). Deposition of the second package, which produced the Middle to Late Ordovician Goonumbla Volcanics, Billabong Creek Limestone and Gunningbland Formation, commenced with shallow-water limestones and minor volcaniclastic rocks. During an approximately 15 million years period, a thick sequence of bedded volcanic sandstone, limestone and minor siltstone and volcanic breccia were deposited in very shallow to moderate water depths. The top of this package is marked by thick volcanic conglomerate and sandstone mass-flow deposits and approximately coeval basaltic andesite lavas and sills sourced from a nearby volcano. The upper age limit of this package is constrained as approximately 450 Ma by Ea3/4 fossils and monzodiorite that intrudes the Goonumbla Volcanics. The lower limit of the third package, which constitutes the Wombin Volcanics, is poorly constrained and the duration of the hiatus that separates the Goonumbla and Wombin Volcanics is unknown but may be as long as 10 million years. The Wombin Volcanics record development of a thick, proximal volcaniclastic apron flanking a compositionally more evolved volcanic edifice in the immediate Parkes area. Thick crystal-rich turbiditic sandstones of mafic provenance are intercalated with polymictic volcanic breccias and megablock breccias that are interpreted as proximal subaqueous debris-flow and debris-avalanche deposits, respectively. The sequence also includes numerous trachyandesite bodies, many of which were emplaced within the volcaniclastic apron as synsedimentary sills. No evidence was found at Parkes to support the existence of a previously proposed 22 km diameter collapse caldera and the source volcanoes for the Ordovician are envisaged as complex stratovolcanoes.  相似文献

针对保山地层区熊洞剖面原属栗柴坝组的灰岩进行了牙形石样品分析,总计建立了5个牙形石带,分别为Pterospathodus pennatus procerus带、Kockelella walliseri带、Ancoradella ploeckensis带、Polygnathoides siluricus带和Polygnathus nothoperbonus带。该剖面第8层原属栗柴坝组,Polygnathus nothoperbonus分子的出现证实其为下泥盆统埃姆斯阶的地层,应归为向阳寺组。剖面总体对应志留系温洛克统底部到下泥盆统埃姆斯阶中部,中间缺失志留系罗德洛统卢德福特阶—下泥盆统埃姆斯阶之间的8~10个标准牙形石带,说明该地区后期可能受构造作用影响,志留系和泥盆系界线为断层接触。该剖面牙形石序列的建立一定程度上完善了滇西保山地层区志留系生物地层的研究程度,为下一步该区生物地层格架的建立奠定了基础。  相似文献

Various early Paleozoic (Cambrian Series 3–Middle Ordovician) reefs are found in the Taebaek Group, eastern Korea, located in the eastern margin of the Sino-Korean Block. They occur in every carbonate-dominant lithostratigraphic unit of the group, but their morphology and composition differ markedly. The Daegi Formation (middle Cambrian: Cambrian Series 3) contains siliceous sponge-Epiphyton reefs formed in a shallow subtidal environment, which is one of the earliest metazoan-bearing microbial reefs after the archaeocyath extinction. The Hwajeol Formation (upper Cambrian: Furongian) encloses sporadic dendrolites consisting of Angulocellularia, which developed in a relatively deep subtidal environment, representing a rare deeper water example. The onset of the Ordovician radiation resulted in the formation of microbialite–Archaeoscyphia–calathiid patch reefs in shallow subtidal deposits of the Lower Ordovician Dumugol Formation. Subsequent late Early Ordovician relative sea-level fall established extensive peritidal environments, forming microbial mats and stromatolites of the Lower–Middle Ordovician Makgol Formation. Ensuing Ordovician radiation resulted in one of the earliest metazoan skeletal reefs of the Middle Ordovician Duwibong Formation, constructed by stromatoporoid Cystostroma and bryozoan Nicholsonella, and developed around shallow shoals. These reefs reflect ongoing evolution and sea-level change during the early Paleozoic, and exemplify a rare glimpse of peri-Gondwanan records of reef evolution, which warrant detailed investigations and comparison with their counterparts in other regions.  相似文献

The ostracod fauna from the Floian (Lower Ordovician) strata of the Cordillera Oriental, Argentina (Acoite Formation) are documented. One new genus Acoitella and four species are recognized, two of which are new (Nanopsis victoria sp. nov. and Conchoprimitia frequens sp. nov.). The diversity of the Early Ordovician ostracod faunas of the Central Andean Basin is evaluated. Compared with other regions, the ostracod diversity, at generic and specific level, of the Cordillera Oriental was comparatively high during the Tremadocian (nine species recorded) and comparatively low during the Floian (four species recorded). The taxonomic composition of the fauna is similar during the entire Early Ordovician of the Cordillera Oriental, where it displays a high percentage of soanellids. The Floian assemblages are characterized by the dominance of the eridostracan C. frequens sp. nov. with a high percentage of nondimorphic palaeocopids: Nanopsis and two genera of the Soanellidae family (Saltite and Acoitella gen nov.). An ostracod shell bed is described and interpreted to be a parautochthonous assemblage, as a result of transport within the same habitat. 红石崖组是分布于滇东和川西南地区的一套红色的奥陶纪粗碎屑沉积地层,含笔石、几丁虫和疑源类等化石,过去通常认为其时代为阿仑尼格期(大致相当于当前国际划分的弗洛期和大坪期)。通过对云南禄劝桂花箐水库岸边、禄劝六江和昆明二村红石崖3条剖面的红石崖组进行了较为详细的化石采集,获得了大量笔石标本,鉴定出了2属15种。根据滇东地区红石崖组的笔石动物群,建立Corymbograptus varicosus笔石带,通过与国内外相关笔石动物群的对比分析,该带可与我国黔北地区的Acrograptus filiformis带、英国湖区的Corymbograptus varicosus带以及阿根廷西北部Acoite组的"Baltograptus deflexus带"进行较好对比,其时代应为早奥陶世弗洛期早中期。据此,红石崖组与其上的巧家组之间很可能缺失大坪期地层。  相似文献
