Summary With the decreasing magnitude of the initial remanent condition of rocks, their pressure demagnetization gradually changes to pressure remanent magnetic polarization under elastic deformation. In both cases the physical cause of these changes are the irreversible changes of the domain structure of ferrimagnetic minerals. Under directional pressure the natural remanent magnetic polarization is affected namely by the generation of a relatively little stable pressure remanent magnetic polarization. With regard to paleomagnetic research, the essential thing is that secondary magnetization combined with possible elastic deformations of rocks in the Earth's crust can be eliminated relatively easily by magnetic cleaning.

Summary A metabasic dyke of pre-Cambrian age passing through Dhaiya village in Dhanbad, consists of metanorite, metadolerite and epidiorite. A magnetic study of this dyke has been undertaken. 14 magnetic traverses were taken with Schmidt vertical force variometer. Direction and intensity of N.R.M. have been determined for 15 oriented samples, with an astatic magnetometer. Magnetic susceptibility of 36 samples has been determined. Microscopic study (thin and polished sections) of samples has been done. The intensity of N.R.M. is upto 11.830×10–3 c.g.s. units susceptibility varies from 53×10–6 to 750×10–6 c.g.s. units and the Koenigsberger ratio from 3.3 to 236.6. The magnetic profiles are interpreted taking into account both remanence and susceptibility. In case of metanorite and metadolerite, more than 80% of the anomaly is caused by remanence. Negative anomalies in some cases is due to negative inclination of remanent magnetization. Very low anomalies (less than 50 gammas) over epidiorite are due to loss of magnetism (both remanent and induced) of these rocks due to felspathization. A new mechanism has been proposed to account for the scatter in magnetic directions for metamorphosed igneous rocks. The rotation, during metamorphism, of magnetic grains (magnetite, ilmenite etc.) enclosed in the lenticular rock-forming minerals causes deviation of the magnetic vector from its original position. Two more causes have been suggested here to explain the variation of intensity of N.R.M. of metabasic rocks: (i) Ilmenite exsolved from titaniferous augite partly contributes to the N.R.M. (ii) magnetite dust injected into felspars by solutions during metamorphism, causing cloudiness in felspars, partly contributes to the N.R.M. The wide scatter in remanent magnetic direction in these rocks is due to the effects of metamorphism. The magnetic directions fall under two groups: one with positive inclination and the other with negative inclination; both the groups being, in general, magnetized normally in the horizontal direction. This indicates normal magnetization in northern and southern hemispheres respectively. This probably means that the place was in the northern and southern hemispheres at the time of original emplacement of the dolerite magma and of metamorphism respectively, the metamorphism, not affecting all the rocks uniformly.

The Mesoproterozoic deeply eroded Keurusselk? impact structure in central Finland is situated within the ??1860?C1890 Ma Central Finland Granitoid Complex. An estimate for the original size of the structure is 30 km, yielding a 5 km wide central uplift with insitu shatter cones and shock metamorphic features in quartz. Petrophysical and rock magnetic properties of the three shallow drill cores (V-001, V-002 and V-003) in the vicinity of the central uplift are determined in order to assess the dimensions of the central uplifts magnetic anomalies. The drill core lithologies consist of schists (metagraywackes), metavolcanic rocks, gneisses and breccia. Petrophysical properties of the drill core rocks show average densities (D) of 2644?C2752 kg/m3, susceptibilities (??) of 160?C761 × 10?6 SI and natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of 3?C306 mA/m and Koenigsberger Q ratios of 0.1?C10. Rock magnetic measurements with temperature dependence of susceptibility (??-T) curves and hysteresis indicated mostly paramagnetic behaviour. However, a fraction of fine-grained ferromagnetic minerals (pyrrhotite and magnetite) was detected from all lithologies. Breccia veins cutting the parautochthonous subcrater floor show lower values of petrophysical properties (D, ??, NRM, Q) and this could be related to the impact event. Amphiboles and micas in the breccia are strongly altered and replaced by secondary chlorite. Chloritization may indicate widespread impact-induced hydrothermal alteration of the target rocks or it may be related to regional tectonic shearing. However, planar deformation features in quartz, found from shatter cones in the central uplift area, are decorated with fluid inclusions indicating that alteration by post-impact processes was present.

A number of lode–gold occurrences are hosted by hydrothermally altered greenstones along the southern boundary of the Palaeoproterozoic Central Lapland Greenstone Belt. The hydrothermally altered and mineralised zones are related to a major thrust and shear zone system that extends much across northern Finland. Spatial correlation between mineralized zones, brittle structural features and chemical alteration was explored and identified from high-resolution aeromagnetic data, in combination with airborne electromagnetic and gamma-ray spectrometric data and coupled with petrophysical and palaeomagnetic studies. The most prominent magnetic, ductile signatures formed during the Svecofennian Orogeny (1900–1800 Ma), resulting in elastic, curved, continuous magnetic patterns. These elastic anomaly patterns were disturbed by tectonic stress from S–SW, resulting in parallel, regularly oriented fracture families and thrust faults normal to the main stress direction. According to aeromagnetic, palaeomagnetic and structural evidence, the thrust zone was active during the latest stage of the orogenic event, but was also reactivated at a later date. Airborne gamma-ray data reveals zones of potassic alteration in the ultramafic rock units in the vicinity of cross-sections of these two fault sets. Chemical and mineralogical changes during alteration and metamorphism strongly affected the mafic and ultramafic host rocks throughout the deformation zone. The strong potassium enrichment and coinciding destruction of magnetic minerals resulted in enhanced potassium concentration and reduction of magnetic anomaly amplitudes. Palaeomagnetic results indicate that the remanent magnetization for the altered ultramafic rocks along the thrust zone is of chemical origin (CRM) and was acquired at 1880–1840 Ma, which is presumed also to be the age of the chemical alteration related to gold mineralization.

The opinions vary on the secondary remagnetization mechanisms of carbonate rocks. The prevalent interpretations of magnetic remanences are either chemical in origin that invoked the large-scale migration of orogenic fluids. or thermoviscous magnetization involved burial diagenetic processes. The paleomagnetic study carried out in northwestern part of Henan Province (north of the Qinling orogenic belt) reveals that 90% of carbonate rocks have suffered from the secondary remagnetization. On the basis of rock magnetic experiments, the assemblage of the magnetic minerals, remanent carriers and its formation process, and the possible mechanisms of remagnetization in these carbonate rocks are discussed.

Early in the history of planetary evolution portions of Martian crust became magnetized by dynamo-generated magnetic field. A lateral distribution of the secondary magnetic field generated by crustal remanent sources containing magnetic carriers of certain grain size and mineralogy is able to produce an ambient magnetic field of larger intensity than preexisting dynamo. This ambient field is capable of magnetizing portions of deeper crust that cools through its blocking temperatures in an absence of dynamo. We consider both magnetite (Fe3O4) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) as minerals contributing to the overall magnetization. Analysis of magnetization of magnetic minerals of various grain size and concentration reveals that magnetite grains less than 0.01 mm in size, and hematite grains larger than 0.01 mm in size can become effective magnetic source capable of magnetizing magnetic minerals contained in surrounding volume. Preexisting crustal remanence (for example ∼250 A/m relates to 25% of multi-domain hematite) can trigger a self-magnetizing process that can continue in the absence of magnetic dynamo and continue strengthening and/or weakening magnetic anomalies on Mars. Thickness of the primary magnetic layer and concentration of magnetic carriers allow specification of the temperature gradient required to trigger a self-magnetization process.

The remanent magnetization of igneous and sedimentary rocks, if not changed by heating or by alteration of magnetic minerals, keep the information about the intensity of that magnetic field in which initial magnetization took place. It has been determined that the dependence of anhysteretic remanent magnetization of such a rock on d.c. magnetic field permits us to find the paleointensity. A method of investigation of rock specimens by means of such remagnetization is suggested and applied to determining the paleointensity for a series of Permo-Triassic rocks.

Field tests were conducted to determine representative total-intensity magnetic anomalies due to the presence of underground storage tanks and 55-gallon steel drums. Three different drums were suspended from a non-magnetic tripod and the underlying field surveyed with each drum in an upright and a flipped plus rotated orientation. At drum-to-sensor separations of 11 feet, the anomalies had peak values of around 50 gammas and half-widths about equal to the drum-to-sensor separation. Remanent and induced magnetizations were comparable; crushing one of the drums significantly reduced both. A profile over a single underground storage tank had a 1000-gamma anomaly, which was similar to the modeled anomaly due to an infinitely long cylinder horizontally magnetized perpendicular to its axis. A profile over two adjacent tanks had a smooth 350-gamma single-peak anomaly even though models of two tanks produced dual-peaked anomalies. Demagnetization could explain why crushing a drum reduced its induced magnetization and why two adjacent tanks produced a single-peak anomaly.
A 40-acre abandoned landfill was surveyed on a 50- by 100-foot rectangular grid and along several detailed profiles. The observed field had broad positive and negative anomalies that were similar to modeled anomalies due to thickness variations in a layer of uniformly magnetized material. It was not comparable to the anomalies due to induced magnetization in multiple, randomly located, randomly sized, independent spheres, suggesting that demagnetization may have limited the effective susceptibility of the landfill material. A different 6-acre site survey conducted on a 10- by 10-foot grid was analyzed to determine the maximum station spacing and line separation that could have been used. Essentially, all of the anomalies at this site would have been resolved by a survey conducted on a 20- by 20-foot grid and the larger anomalies would have been detected by a 50- by 50-foot grid.

The Cappadocia region, located in Central Turkey, is characterized by widespread lava flows and volcanoclastic deposits dating from Miocene to Quaternary. Gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies of the region appear to present similar high and low amplitude regions, although the aeromagnetic anomalies exhibit a rather complex pattern which is thought to be caused by remanent magnetization. The low-pass filtered aeromagnetic map shows a deep-seated magnetic anomaly which may be linked to the widespread volcanic activity at the surface. The pseudogravity transformation of the upward continued anomaly has been constructed. The pseudogravity anomaly demonstrates some form of clockwise rotation. This anomaly was modelled by means of a three-dimensional method. The top and bottom of the body are at 6.3km and 11km (including the flight height) from the ground surface, respectively. This deep body is ellipsoidal and extends along an E-W direction, which is in line with the regional stress direction deduced from GPS measurements. A new mobilistic dynamo-tectonic system appears to explain the body’s E-W elongation. The modelled body may be the source for the inferred geothermal energy of the region. Magnetic measurements were carried out on oriented rock samples collected from outcrops of ignimbrites and basalts, providing directions and intensities of remanent magnetization, susceptibilities and Koeningsberger (Q) ratios. Standard deviations of remanent directions of the Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM) display a wide scatter implying unreliability of the surface data. Reduction to pole (RTP) transformation of magnetic anomalies was successful with the induced magnetization angle despite the complex pattern of magnetic anomalies.

Experimental evidence and theory indicate that chemical changes occur in many igneous rocks at sufficiently low temperatures to significantly affect the remanent magnetization. Some chemical changes lead to self-reversals of magnetization that are not reproducible in laboratory experiments. Such self-reversals appear to be very rare in subaerially-erupted basalts, but they probably are much more common in some other rock types, such as granites and diorites. The stability of the natural remanent magnetization in igneous rocks can be decreased, left unaltered, or increased by chemical changes. In addition, chemical changes will usually affect the intensity of magnetization in a rock; the intensity can increase, decrease, or (rarely) be left unaltered by a chemical change. Such changes are important to consider in the development of improved techniques for obtaining reliable estimates of the intensity of the Earth's magnetic field in the past and in correctly interpreting marine magnetic anomalies. Finally, experiments and theory are presented which suggest that many of the chemical changes in igneous rocks will only occasionally produce significant changes in the direction of the magnetization.

A ground magnetic study of Ustica Island was performed to provide new insights into subsurface tectonic and volcanic structures. The total-intensity anomaly field, obtained after a data-reduction procedure, shows the presence of a W–E-striking magnetic anomaly in the middle of the island and another two intense anomalies, which seem to continue offshore, in the southwestern and the northeastern sides, respectively. The detected anomalies were analyzed by a quadratic programming (QP) algorithm to obtain a 3D subsurface magnetization distribution. The volcano magnetization model reveals the presence of intensely magnetized volumes, interpreted as the feeding systems of the main eruptive centers of the island, which roughly follow the trend of the main regional structural lineaments. These findings highlight how regional tectonics has strongly affected the structural and magmatic evolution of the Ustica volcanic complex producing preferential ways for magma ascent.

The intersection of the Juan de Fuca ridge and Blanco fracture zone is characterized by unusually high amplitude magnetic anomalies (over 1500 nT) which appear to be associated with a body roughly 50 km in length and 20 km in width aligned along the fracture zone. Simple three-dimensional magnetic models indicate that this anomaly is probably caused by a highly magnetized block of material situated in the western end of the Blanco fracture zone near its intersection with the Juan de Fuca ridge. Rock magnetization studies of tholeiitic basalts dredged from this area confirm the presence of highly magnetized basalts near the ridge crest/transform fault intersection. These tholeiitic basalts are enriched in iron and titanium relative to “normal” oceanic tholeiites, apparently the result of extensive shallow fractionation involving olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene. Magnetic model studies indicate that an average thickness of no more than 500 m of these iron-rich basalts is necessary to produce the observed anomaly pattern. Comparison of these basalts with samples previously dredged from the Juan de Fuca ridge crest suggests that these Fe-rich, highly magnetized basalts probably “leaked” out of the southernmost portion of the Juan de Fuca ridge.

The interpretation of total field anomalies becomes somewhat complicated, especially when an arbitrarily magnetized spherical ore mass happens to be the causative body. Even though some attempts have been made to analyze total field anomaly maps, they are often too complicated and their underlying assumptions in respect of permanent and induced components of magnetism are far from realistic. In this note, an attempt has been made to show that vertical magnetic anomalies are capable of yielding interpretation with ease and precision as far as magnetized spheres are concerned. An empirical method has been outlined for computing the magnetization inclination in the plane of the profile using the measured distances between principal maximum, principal minimum, and zero anomaly positions on a magnetic anomaly profile.

Thermally acquired remanent magnetization is important for the estimation of the past magnetic field present at the time of cooling. Rocks that cool slowly commonly contain magnetic grains of millimeter scale. This study investigated 1-mm-sized magnetic minerals of iron, iron–nickel, magnetite, and hematite and concluded that the thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) acquired by these grains did not accurately record the ambient magnetic fields less than 1 μT. Instead, the TRM of these grains fluctuated around a constant value. Consequently, the magnetic grain ability to record the ambient field accurately is reduced. Above the critical field, TRM acquisition is governed by an empirical law and is proportional to saturation magnetization (Ms). The efficiency of TRM is inversely proportional to the mineral's saturation magnetization Ms and is related to the number of domains in the magnetic grains. The absolute field for which we have an onset of TRM sensitivity is inversely proportional to the size of the magnetic grain. These results have implications for previous reports of random directions in meteorites during alternating field demagnetization, or thermal demagnetization of TRM. Extraterrestrial magnetic fields in our solar system are weaker than the geomagnetic field by several orders of magnitude. Extraterrestrial rocks commonly contain large iron-based magnetic minerals as a common part of their composition, and therefore ignoring this behavior of multidomain grains can result in erroneous paleofield estimates.

Abstract The < 6 Ma young Taitao ophiolite, exposed at the westernmost promontory of the Taitao Peninsula, is located approximately 40 km southeast of the Chile triple junction and consists of a complete sequence of oceanic lithosphere. Systematic sampling for paleomagnetic study was performed to understand the complex obduction processes of the ophiolite onto the forearc of the South American Plate. Two representative demagnetization paths of remanent magnetization vectors were observed. One is characterized by stable univectorial demagnetization paths and was observed in volcaniclastic rocks and dyke complexes. Orientations of their remanent magnetization vectors indicate various degrees of counterclockwise rotations. The other is characterized by multivectorial demagnetization paths and was observed in the plutonic units (gabbros and ultramafic rocks). From these, two distinct stable remanent magnetization vectors were isolated; one has high coercivity and the other has low coercivity along the demagnetization paths with little influence of viscous magnetizations. This suggests that the complex deformation history involved at least two rotational events. The clockwise rotation, inferred from high coercivity remanent magnetization vectors, was attributed to a ridge collision event and the counterclockwise rotation, inferred from the low coercivity remanent magnetization vectors, was attributed to an accommodation phase into the South American forearc during obduction and final emplacement of the ophiolite. Folds developed during this period. Paleomagnetic restorations of the internal structures of the plutonic units and dyke complexes suggest that they probably originated in a mid‐oceanic ridge environment near a transform fault. The counterclockwise rotation of the plutonic and dyke complex units during the obduction generated tectonic gaps between these and the basement. The volcaniclastic rocks must have been deposited at nearly their present location, filling the tectonic gaps, as less effect of tectonic rotation was identified on these rocks.

Magnetic anomalies over the continental shelf off the east coast of India (Orissa) suggest the presence of a highly magnetic rock type magnetized with an intensity of 900 nT in a direction, azimuth(A) = 150° and inclination(I) = +65°. This suggest the occurrence of igneous volcanic rocks which is confirmed from samples found below Tertiary sediments from a few boreholes in this region. The depth of this rock type as estimated from magnetic anomalies varies from approximately 1–2 km near the coast to 4–4.5 km towards the shelf margin. This direction of magnetization is the reverse of the reported direction of magnetization for the Rajmahal Traps of the Cretaceous period (100–110 m.y). A small strip of the body near the continental shelf margin appears, however, to possess normal magnetization suggesting the occurrence of normal and reversed polarities side by side, a characteristic typical for oceanic magnetic anomalies. The reversed polarity of the rocks on the continental shelf suggests that they correspond probably to the MO reversal (115 m.y.) on world magnetostratigraphic scale and provide a paleolatitude of 47°S for the land mass of India which agrees with the palaeoreconstruction of India and Antarctica. In this reconstruction, the Mahanadi Gondwana graben on the Indian subcontinent falls into line with the Lambert Rift in Antarctica, suggesting a probable common ancestry. The volcanic rocks on the continental shelf off the east coast of India might represent a missing link, that is, rocks formed between India and Antarctica at the time of the break-up of Gondwanaland. Satellite magnetic anomalies (MAGSAT) recorded over the Indian shield and interpreted in terms of variations in the Curie point geotherm provide a direction of magnetization which also places this continent close to Antarctica. As such MAGSAT anomalies recorded over eastern Antarctica are found compatible with those recorded over the Indian shield.

In this paper some aspects concerning the interpretation of magnetic anomalies are treated, particularly when the remanent magnetization intensity is strong. In this case, since total and induced magnetization vectors can have very different directions, a correct anomaly interpretation strictly depends on the knowledge of their declinations and inclinations. Thus, a specific procedure is described to determine such parameters from well-known semi-empirical techniques and vectorial relations.Furthermore, the classical definition of apparent susceptibility is shown to be inadequate to this problem and a more general formulation is suggested, which is not only related to the true susceptibility and to the Koenisberger ratio, but also to the declinations and inclinations of the induced and remanent magnetization vectors. The two apparent susceptibilities are then compared for some synthetic magnetic anomalies and significant differences are found.
