While the X-ray fluxes measured through two different broadband filters can be used to derive the temperatures and emission measures of solar plasmas, it is generally assumed that no plasma parameters can be measured quantitatively with a single filtergram alone. We show that the thermal energy density (or pressure) of a solar plasma can be measured with an ideal single filtergram. Calculations have been done to compare the properties of the Skylab S-054 X-ray telescope filters to those of the ideal filter.  相似文献

Helioseismic images of multipolar active regions show enhanced seismic emission in 5-mHz oscillations in a halo surrounding the active region called the `acoustic glory'. The acoustic glories contain elements that sustain an average seismic emission 50% greater than similar elements in the quiet Sun. The most intense seismic emitters tend to form strings in non-magnetic regions, sometimes marking the borders of weak magnetic regions and the separation between weak magnetic regions of opposite polarity. This study compares the temporal character of seismic emission from acoustic glories with that from the quiet Sun. The power distribution of quiet-Sun seismic emission far from solar activity is exponential, as for random Gaussian noise, and therefore not perceivably episodic. The distribution of seismic power emanating from the most intense elements that comprise the acoustic glories is exponential out to approximately 4 times the average power emitted by the quiet Sun. Above this threshold the latter distribution shows significant saturation, suggesting the operation of a hydromechanical non-linearity that sets limits on the acoustic power generated by the convection zone. This could give us considerable insight into the physical mechanism of seismic emission from the near subphotosphere.  相似文献

Using the correlation between the radiance or Doppler velocity and the extrapolated magnetic field, we determined the emission heights of a set of solar transition region lines in an equatorial coronal hole and in the surrounding quiet Sun region. We found that for all of the six lower-transition-region lines, the emission height is about 4-5 Mm in the equatorial coronal hole, and around 2 Mm in the quiet Sun region. This result confirms the previous findings that plasma with different temperature can coexist at the same layer of transition region. In the quiet Sun region, the emission height of the upper-transition-region line Ne viii is almost the same that of the lower-transition-region line, but in the coronal hole, it is twice as high. This difference reveals that the outflow of Ne Ⅷ is a signature of solar wind in the coronal hole and is just a mass supply to the large loops in the quiet Sun.  相似文献

Solar radio emission provides valuable information on the structure and dynamics of the solar atmosphere above the temperature minimum. We review the background and most recent observational and theoretical results on the quiet Sun and active region studies, covering the entire radio range from millimeter to decameter wavelengths. We examine small- and large-scale structures, at short and long time scales, as well as synoptic aspects. Open questions and challenges for the future are also identified.  相似文献

We present a comparative study of photometric and dynamic properties of photospheric bright points (BPs) observed at the disk centre in the active region (AR) NOAA 10912 and in the quiet Sun. We found that the average concentration of BPs is 54% larger in the AR than in the quiet Sun. We also measure a decrease of the BP concentration and an increase of their size moving away from the AR centre. However, these variations can be ascribed to the variation of the spatial resolution and image quality in the field of view of the AR dataset. We also found that BPs in the quiet Sun are associated with larger downflow motions than those measured within the AR. Finally, from our measurements of contrast and velocity along the line of sight, we deduced that BPs are less bright in high magnetic flux density regions than in quiet regions, due to a lower efficiency of convection in the former regions.  相似文献

Coronal holes (CH) emit significantly less at coronal temperatures than quiet-Sun regions (QS), but can hardly be distinguished in most chromospheric and lower transition region lines. A key quantity for the understanding of this phenomenon is the magnetic field. We use data from SOHO/MDI to reconstruct the magnetic field in coronal holes and the quiet Sun with the help of a potential magnetic model. Starting from a regular grid on the solar surface we then trace field lines, which provide the overall geometry of the 3D magnetic field structure. We distinguish between open and closed field lines, with the closed field lines being assumed to represent magnetic loops. We then try to compute some properties of coronal loops. The loops in the coronal holes (CH) are found to be on average flatter than in the QS. High and long closed loops are extremely rare, whereas short and low-lying loops are almost as abundant in coronal holes as in the quiet Sun. When interpreted in the light of loop scaling laws this result suggests an explanation for the relatively strong chromospheric and transition region emission (many low-lying, short loops), but the weak coronal emission (few high and long loops) in coronal holes. In spite of this contrast our calculations also suggest that a significant fraction of the cool emission in CHs comes from the open flux regions. Despite these insights provided by the magnetic field line statistics further work is needed to obtain a definite answer to the question if loop statistics explain the differences between coronal holes and the quiet Sun.  相似文献

A direct method for determining electron densities from emission line intensities of ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence is described and then applied to the analysis of extreme ultraviolet Ciii and Ov spectra from both quiet and active areas in the solar transition region. The results are consistent with a value of N e T e = 6 × 1014 cm-3K for the quiet Sun at temperatures of 5 × 104 to 3 × 105K. Electron densities are approximately five times greater in active regions than in the quiet Sun.  相似文献

We study variations of the lifetimes of high- solar p modes in the quiet and active Sun with the solar activity cycle. The lifetimes in the degree range =300 – 600 and ν=2.5 – 4.5 mHz were computed from SOHO/MDI data in an area including active regions and quiet Sun using the time – distance technique. We applied our analysis to the data in four different phases of solar activity: 1996 (at minimum), 1998 (rising phase), 2000 (at maximum), and 2003 (declining phase). The results from the area with active regions show that the lifetime decreases as activity increases. The maximal lifetime variations are between solar minimum in 1996 and maximum in 2000; the relative variation averaged over all values and frequencies is a decrease of about 13%. The lifetime reductions relative to 1996 are about 7% in 1998 and about 10% in 2003. The lifetime computed in the quiet region still decreases with solar activity, although the decrease is smaller. On average, relative to 1996, the lifetime decrease is about 4% in 1998, 10% in 2000, and 8% in 2003. Thus, measured lifetime increases when regions of high magnetic activity are avoided. Moreover, the lifetime computed in quiet regions also shows variations with the activity cycle.  相似文献

We develop a technique for the analysis of Hei 1083 nm spectra which addresses several difficulties through determination of a continuum background by comparison with a well-calibrated standard and through removal of nearby solar and telluric blends by differential comparison to an average spectrum. The method is compared with earlier analysis of imaging spectroscopy obtained at the National Solar Observatory/Kitt Peak Vacuum Telescope (NSO/KPVT) with the NASA/NSO Spectromagnetograph (SPM). We examine distributions of Doppler velocity and line width as a function of central intensity for an active region, filament, quiet Sun, and coronal hole. For our example, we find that line widths and central intensity are oppositely correlated in a coronal hole and quiet Sun. Line widths are comparable to the quiet Sun in the active region, are systematically lower in the filament, and extend to higher values in the coronal hole. Outward velocities of 2–4 km s–1 are typically observed in the coronal hole. The sensitivity of these results to analysis technique is discussed.  相似文献

We detect and analyze the oscillatory behavior of waves using a coronal seismology tool on sequences of coronal images. We study extreme-ultraviolet image sequences of active and quiet Sun regions and of coronal holes we identify 3- and 5-minute periodicities. In each studied region the 3- and 5-minute periodicities are similarly frequent. The number of pixels exhibiting a 3-minute periodicity is between 6 %?–?8 % and those pixels exhibiting a 5-minute periodicity is between 5 %?–?9 % of the total number of observed pixels. Our results show 3-minute oscillations along coronal loop structures but do not show 5-minute oscillations along these same loop structures. The number of pixels exhibiting 3- and 5-minute periodicities in one type of region (active Sun, quiet Sun, and coronal holes) is roughly the same for all observed regions, leading us to infer that the 3- and 5-minute oscillations are the result of a global mechanism.  相似文献

Observations made at the quiet Sun-centre with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instruments on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory ( SOHO ) have shown that the intensities of the resonance lines of He  i and He  ii are significantly larger than predicted by emission measure distributions found from other transition region lines. The intensities of the helium lines are observed to be lower in coronal holes than in the quiet Sun. Any theory proposed to account for the behaviour of the helium lines must explain the observations of both the quiet Sun and coronal holes. We use observations made with SOHO to find the physical conditions in a polar coronal hole. The electron pressure is found using the C  iii 1175-Å and N  iii 991.5-Å lines, as the C  iii line at 977.0 Å becomes optically thick in some regions at high latitudes. The mean electron pressure is a factor of ≃2 lower than that at the quiet Sun-centre. The mean coronal electron temperature is     . The helium lines are enhanced with respect to other transition region lines but by factors which are ≃ 30 per cent smaller than at the quiet Sun-centre. The mean ratios of the intensities of the He  i 537.0- and 584.3-Å lines and of the He  i and He  ii 303.8-Å lines vary little with the type of region studied. These ratios are compared with those predicted by models of the transition region, taking into account the radiative transfer in the helium lines. No significant variation is found in the relative abundances of carbon and silicon.  相似文献

The existence of limb brightening at the equator of the quiet Sun at 3.1 cm is derived from a statistical analysis of scans of the solar disk taken during 1968.A ratio of 0.7% is found between the flux emitted by the equatorial limb enhancements and that of a disk of uniform brightness temperature.  相似文献

The radio emission from the solar corona is related to the configuration of the inner atmosphere. By studying the Sun at multiple frequencies, different layers of plasma in solar atmosphere are probed. We use the Mauritius Radio Telescope. The quiet Sun period, difference maps using synthesized 1D maps reveal a certain regular feature, the origin of which is not thoroughly understood and which is attributed to the solar differential rotation. For the active Sun period, the coronal emission is linked to the magnetic field configuration originating from the inner atmosphere. As expected, a strong correlation exists between the MRT 151 MHz and Nancay 164 MHz radio emission. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present the first observations of the Sun with the Allen Telescope Array (ATA). We used up to six frequencies, from 1.43 to 6 GHz, and baselines from 6 to 300 m. To our knowledge, these are the first simultaneous multi-frequency full-Sun maps obtained at microwave frequencies without mosaicing. The observations took place when the Sun was relatively quiet, although at least one active region was present each time. We present multi-frequency flux budgets for each of the sources on the Sun. Outside of active regions, assuming optically thin bremsstrahlung (free–free) coronal emission on top of an optically thick ≈?10?000 K chromosphere, the multi-frequency information can be condensed into a single, frequency-independent, “coronal bremsstrahlung contribution function” \([\mathrm{EM}/\sqrt{T}]\) map. This technique allows the separation of the physics of emission as well as a measurement of the density structure of the corona. Deviations from this simple relationship usually indicate the presence of an additional gyroresonance-emission component, as is typical in active regions.  相似文献

We present high spatial and spectral resolution observations of one active and one quiet-Sun region, obtained with CDS and SUMER on SOHO. The connections between the line profile parameters are studied and a systematic wavelength shift towards the red with increasing peak line intensity (line broadening) is detected. The large scatter in the data calls for another approach. We apply conditional probability analysis to a series of EUV emission lines and find significant correlations between line profile parameters. For a given interval in wavelength shift we find that: (1) line profiles with large intensities (line widths) and red shifts above the average constitute an increasing fraction of the profiles as the relative wavelength shift increases, (2) line profiles with large intensities (line widths) and blue shifts compared to the average, on the other hand, constitute a decreasing fraction of the profiles as the relative wavelength shift increases. These results extend the findings of an earlier quiet-Sun study from one to several emission lines and expand the validity to include the active region. Interestingly, the active region observations show correlations between peak line intensity and wavelength shift in the coronal lines. The tendency for red-shifted profiles to be more intense than blue-shifted profiles will shift line profiles derived by integrating along the slit towards the red. From the present observations we are not able to determine the fraction of the net red shift that emerges from this correlation. We suggest that the same mechanism is responsible both for the correlation between the line profile parameters and for the differential red shift between the transition region and chromospheric emission lines.  相似文献

In the present model, we have assumed the plasma conditions above a solar active region to be varying continuously from the center of the active region to the adjacent quiet region and derived the 3-dimensional distributions of three physical parameters of the plasma such as electron density, electron temperature, and magnetic field to be functions of both the height above the photosphere and the distance from the central axis of the active region. Using the combined emission mechanism of gyro-resonance (cyclotron resonance) radiation and bremsstrahlung, we have built a model of solar radio active regions.  相似文献

EUV observations of two subflares and associated surges have been analyzed. At maximum brightness the emission measures and radiative outputs of the subflares were approximately 20% of the corresponding values for the active region. Multiple EUV surges were observed during and following each subflare, with surge material being ejected in a variety of directions, including toward a coronal bright point located outside of the active region. The total energy of the surges appears to be comparable to that radiated by the subflares, a few times 1028 erg. As reported in previous studies of surges, we find that there was no significant emission from these features in spectral lines formed at temperatures T>106K. The ejection of surges in several different directions and nearly simultaneous flaring of various areas of the active region suggest that the primary site of the subflares was magnetically connected to a variety of different areas in the active region and the surrounding quiet region.  相似文献

Much of the magnetic field in solar and stellar photospheres is arranged into clusters of ‘flux tubes’, i.e., clustered into compact areas in which the intrinsic field strength is approximately a kilogauss. The flux concentrations are constantly evolving as they merge with or annihilate against other concentrations, or fragment into smaller concentrations. These processes result in the formation of concentrations containing widely different fluxes. Schrijver et al. (1997, Paper I) developed a statistical model for this distribution of fluxes, and tested it on data for the quiet Sun. In this paper we apply that model to a magnetic plage with an average absolute flux density that is 25 times higher than that of the quiet network studied in Paper I. The model result matches the observed distribution for the plage region quite accurately. The model parameter that determines the functional form of the distribution is the ratio of the fragmentation and collision parameters. We conclude that this ratio is the same in the magnetic plage and in quiet network. We discuss the implications of this for (near-)surface convection, and the applicability of the model to stars other than the Sun and as input to the study of coronal heating.  相似文献

Spatially-resolved precise photometric observations of the whole Sun at wavelengths of 545nm (FWHM 40nm) were carried out by using the CCD solar surface photometer. Bright parts of photospheric network have contrast of several tenths of percent, and their contribution to the total irradiance is approximately half that of active region faculae. The solar irradiance variations estimated from sunspots, faculae and active network (contrast>0.3%) agreed with the ACRIM data. The quiet Sun irradiance used in the present results was different from the total irradiance at the solar minimum observed by the ACRIM, which indicates unmeasured components (contrast>0.1%) cause the 11-year cycle irradiance variation.  相似文献

A close temporal and spatial association has been found between erupting filaments/coronal transients and radio noise storm continua. The three transients studied occurred away from active regions and are members of a class not usually accompanied by chromospheric emission. The data analyzed were from the S-054 soft X-ray telescope on Skylab and from one- and two-dimensional interferometers at meter and decameter wavelengths at Nançay and Clark Lake observatories. Calculations confirmed that observed microwave radiation from the transients is due to thermal bremsstrahlung. The results are consistent with an interpretation of heating of an increased amount of coronal plasma by nonthermal, 10–100 keV electrons. Three possibilities for the source of the material are described: (1) The filament material; (2) evaporation from the chromosphere or transition region; and (3) via a long-lived reconnection process.  相似文献
