Water dissolved in a nominally anhydrous oxide like MgO forms not only OH? ions, as is usually assumed, but also molecular H2 and peroxy anions O22?. The specific lattice site where this reaction occurs has been identified for the model-type MgO structure: it is the fully OH? compensated cation vacancy. In partially deuterated synthetic MgO, molecular D2 forms preferentially to H2, by a factor of the order of 4. Three methods have been used to study this very large D/H fractionation experimentally: mass spectrometry, electron spin resonance and infrared spectroscopy. All give consistent results and confirm that internal D/H fractionation occurs and is a function of the temperature. Theoretically the D/H fractionation is explained by the lower zeropoint energy of D2 with respect to H2, amplified by secondary processes through which the molecular hydrogen species become mobilized and eventually lost via diffusion. The possible consequences of such internal D/H fractionation processes are indicated for the interpretation of water and hydrogen release patterns, with varying D/H ratios, from terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples.  相似文献

Summary Thirteen natural rock profiles (Barton and Choubey, 1977) are analyzed for their fractal properties. Most of the profiles were found to approximate fractal curves but some also showed features of specific wavelengths and amplitudes superimposed on fractal characteristics. The profiles showed fractal dimensions from 1.1 to 1.5 covering a range of selfsimilar and self-affine curves. The analysis results suggest a negative correlation between fractal dimension,D, and amplitude,A. Joint roughness coefficients (JRC) show a positive correlation with amplitude,A, and a negative correlation with fractal dimension,D. A numerical model of fracture closure is used to investigate the effects of different profile characteristics (D, A and sample size) on the nature of dilation and contact area, using the natural profiles and synthetic fractional Brownian motion profiles. Smooth profiles (low JRC, highD, lowA) display many small contact regions whereas rough fractures (high JRC, lowD, highA) display few large contact areas. The agreement with published experimental data supports the suggested correlations between JRC and the fractal parameters,A andD. It is suggested that observed scale effects in JRC and joint dilation can be explained by small differential strain discontinuities across fractures, which originate at the time of fracture formation.  相似文献

Trace element partition coefficients between clinopyroxenes and associated glassy matrix (Cpx/L D) have been determined for 13 REE, HFSE4+,5+, U, Th, Sr, Pb, Sc and V from combined LA-ICP-MS/EMP analyses in selected trachytes and trachyphonolites from Campi Flegrei. Composition of clinopyroxene and glass is pretty homogeneous in the trachyphonolites, pointing to an overall attainment of the equilibrium conditions. In trachytes, conversely, phases show some compositional heterogeneity (due to the presence of clinopyroxene xenocrysts) that requested a more careful petrographic and geochemical inspection of the samples to assess the equilibrium clinopyroxene composition. In the trachyte clinopyroxenes, REE are compatible from Nd to Lu (Cpx/L D up to 2.9), like Y, Ti, Sc and V. The Cpx/L D for Eu is lower than those of the adjacent REE, highlighting Eu2+ contribution. High D values are also shown by U, Th, Pb, Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta relatively to basaltic and andesitic systems, whereas the D Sr is roughly similar to that found for less evolved magmas. Trachyphonolites are characterized by an overall decrease of the Cpx/L D for highly-charged cations (with the exception of V), and by a slight increase of D Sr. REE are still compatible from Nd to Lu (Cpx/L D up to 2.1), like Ti, Y, Sc and V. This variation is also predicted for REE and Y by models based on the elastic strain theory, being consistent with the slightly lower polymerization degree estimated for the trachyphonolites. However, the observed Cpx/L D (REE,Y) are matched by the modelled ones only considering very low T (≤825°C), which are believed unlikely. This mismatch cannot be attributed to effects induced by the water-rich composition of the trachyte–trachyphonolite suite, since they would lower the observed Cpx/L D (REE,Y). Moreover, the anomalous inflections of measured Cpx/L D for HREE suggests some crystal-chemical control, such as the entrance of these elements in a site distinct from M2. It is concluded that the large Cpx/L D determined for trachytes and trachyphonolites are likely induced by hitherto unconstrained changes of the Z3+ activities related to the composition of melt and/or solid. All these considerations strongly highlight the importance of a direct characterization of trace element partitioning in natural samples from magmatic systems poorly characterized by experimental studies. The Dating rocks and Darjeeling gneisses, which constitute the Sikkim dome in eastern Himalaya, as well as the Gondwana and Buxa rocks of ‘Rangit Window’, disclose strikingly similar sequences of deformation and metamorphism. The structures in all the rocks belong to two generations. The structures of early generation are long-limbed, tight near-isoclinal folds which are often intrafolial and rootless. These intrafolial folds are associated with co-planar tight folds with variably oriented axes and sheath folds with arcuate hinges. Penetrative axial plane cleavage and mineral lineation are related structures; transposition of bedding is remarkable. This early phase of deformation (D 1) is accompanied by constructive metamorphism. The structures of later generation are open, asymmetrical or polyclinal; a crenulation cleavage or discrete fracture may occur. The structures of early generation are distorted by folds of later generation and recrystallized minerals are cataclastically deformed. Recrystallization is meagre or absent during the later phase of deformation (D 2). The present discussion is on structures of early generation and strain environment during theD 1 phase of deformation. The concentration of intrafolial folds in the vicinity of ductile shear zones and decollement or detachment surface (often described as ‘thrust’) may be considered in this context. The rocks of Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya display minor structures other than intrafolial folds and variably oriented co-planar folds. The state of finite strain in the rocks, as observed from features like flattened grains and pebbles, ptygmatic folds and boudinaged folds indicate combination of flattening and constrictional type strain. The significance of the intrafolial folds in the same rocks is discussed to probe the environment of strain during progressive deformation (D 1).  相似文献

对岩溶裂隙水进行及时准确的预报,是当前岩溶隧道设计和施工中亟待研究和解决的关键问题。复信号分析技术能够提取多个参数进行综合判断,基于此优点,尝试将复信号分析技术引入到地质雷达探查水体的研究中。对雷达数据中的水体异常分别从振幅、频率和相位等方面进行综合判断,克服了以往判断依据单一的缺点,为利用地质雷达进行岩溶裂隙水预报提供了一种切实可行的方法。首先,介绍了复信号分析技术的原理,阐述了在地质雷达信号处理中引入复信号分析技术的必要性;然后探讨了基于复信号分析技术的地质雷达预报岩溶裂隙水的可行性,得出了判断水体的依据。最后结合工程实例,对地质雷达数据进行了复信号处理,并对岩溶裂隙水进行了综合判断。与开挖结果对比显示,复信号分析技术的运用较大的提高了岩溶裂隙水预报的准确性和可信性。  相似文献

 Log-normal size distributions are of the form n=noe−L/α, where n=number density, L=crystal length, and α is a constant. A method for measuring three-dimensional log-normal crystal or grain size distributions (CSDs) in thin section has been deduced from computer experiments, in which 2D sections were cut through assemblages of 3D solids. The size ranges and distributions studied were appropriate for igneous microphenocryst to megacryst populations. Conversion from 2D to 3D is based on an exact correction for spheres of uniform diameter. Cumulate numbers of polygons with length≥L (N2D) are converted to N3D by the equation: ln(N3D)=ln(N2D/[L·S])+ln(γ)−β/[L·S] The number density is then obtained as n=−dN/dL. The parameters S and γ correct the measured lengths and no (no=number density at L=0) respectively, and are functions of crystal shape. The parameter β is a weak function of the degree of spatial orientation of the crystals. Highly symmetrical shapes such as cubes, octahedra, and elongated prisms can be accurately measured when randomly oriented; however, rectangular solids with a≠b≠c cannot be accurately measured because they produce bimodal length distributions in cross section. Strongly oriented textures (trachytic or lineated) can be accurately measured regardless of crystal shape. New CSD data from alkaline rocks and a kimberlite give examples of CSDs modified by megacryst retention, xenocryst addition, phenocryst accumulation, and groundmass nucleation. Electron and ion-probe microanalysis have been used to obtain zoning profiles for major and trace elements in olivine phenocrysts from a high-magnesian andesite from Shodo-Shima island, southwest Japan. This rock was previously thought to represent undifferentiated, primary magma. Some crystals have unzoned cores, while others show cores which are reversely zoned with respect to Mg/ (Mg+Fe), Ni, Mn and Cr. In addition, some Ni profiles show a normally zoned hump at the most central portions of the reversely zoned crystals. All crystals show normally zoned rims. The Li concentrations are constant throughout the cores of all crystals studied, but rise sharply, by a factor of up to at least six, in the rims. The Ca and Co concentrations are essentially constant throughout all the crystals. Mechanisms for producing the observed zoning profiles are discussed, and it is concluded that the reverse zoning was produced by the introduction of crystals into a less differentiated magma than that in which they grew. The reversely zoned crystals could therefore represent xenocrysts which were introduced into an undifferentiated magma, or phenocrysts introduced into a more primitive magma by a magma mixing process. The Ni profiles are used to estimate the residence time of these crystals in the more primitive magma. The following trace element partition co-efficients have been estimated for the olivine-groundmass system in this rock: D Ni=16; D Mn=1.1; D Co=4.2; D Ca =0.02; D Ti=0.005; D V=0.05; D Sc=0.2; D Na=0.0002. Studies of trace element zoning will become increasingly important as the new generation of trace element microprobes become available but a larger database of experimentally determined values for trace element partition coefficients and diffusion coefficients in crystals and magmas, and a better understanding of other disequilibrium processes are required to fully exploit the new data.  相似文献

Flow-competence assessments of floods have been based on the largest particle sizes transported, and yield either the mean flow stress, mean velocity, or discharge per unit flow width. The use of extreme particle sizes has potential problems in that they may have been transported by debris flows rather than by the flood, it may be difficult to locate the largest particles within the flood deposits, and there are questions concerning how representative one or a few large particles might be of the transported sediments and therefore of the flood hydraulics. Such problems would be eliminated for the most part if competence evaluations are based on median grain sizes of transported sediments, or perhaps on some coarse percentile that is established by a reasonable number of grains. In order to examine such issues, the gravel-transport data of Milhous from Oak Creek, Oregon, and of Carling from Great Eggleshope Beck, England, have been analysed in terms of changing grain-size percentiles with varying flow stresses. A comparison between these two data sets is of added interest because the bed material in Oak Creek is segregated into well-developed pavement and subpavement layers, while such a layering of bed materials is largely absent in Great Eggleshope Beck. The analyses show that the trend of increasing sizes of the largest particles in the bedload samples (diameter Dm) with increasing flow stresses is consistent with similar dependencies based on sieve percentiles ranging from the medians (D50) to the 95th percentiles (D95). This indicates that the largest particles are an integral part of the overall distributions of bedload grain sizes, and respond to changing flow hydraulics along with the rest of the size distribution. In Oak Creek, the median grain size shows the largest change with increasing flow stresses, followed by D60, and so on to D95 which shows the smallest change. The variations in Dm continue this trend, and are similar to those for D95. This systematic variation of grain-size percentiles in Oak Creek is consistent with changes in the overall distributions which tend to be symmetrical and Gaussian for low discharges, but become skewed Rosin distributions for high discharges. In contrast, in Great Eggleshope Beck the several percentiles and Dm show the same rate of shift to coarser sizes as flow stresses increase. This results in part from differences in sampling techniques wherein the bedload samples from Great Eggleshope Beck represent a complete flood event, while shorterterm samples at a specific flow stage were obtained in Oak Creek. As a result of the integrated sampling in Great Eggleshope Beck, the bedload grain-size distributions are more complex, commonly with a bimodal pattern. However, after accounting for differences in sampling schemes in the two streams, contrasting patterns in changing grain-size distributions remain, and these are concluded to reflect grain sorting differences as the bedload grain-size distributions approach the distributions of the bed materials. It is surprising that if criteria commonly employed to demonstrate the equal mobility of different grain sizes are used in the comparison, then Great Eggleshope Beck is far closer to this condition in spite of its minimal development of a pavement. It is concluded that the respective shapes of the bed-material grain-size distributions, in particular their degrees of skewness, are more important to the observed sorting patterns than are the effects of a pavement layer regulating grain entrapment to produce an equal mobility of different grain sizes. Therefore, the comparison has established that flow-competence relationships will differ from one stream to another, depending on the pattern of grain sorting which is a function of the bedmaterial grain-size distribution.  相似文献

近年来光释光测年在单颗粒技术上的研究取得了一系列重要进展,极大地提高了测年精度,为地质考古测年提供了更大的空间,研究者们对全球重要考古遗址点进行了详细的单颗粒测年,取得诸多考古新发现。单颗粒释光技术是在光释光单片技术上发展而来,对样品的单个石英或长石颗粒进行独立测试,基于单个颗粒测量结果,结合误差理论、统计学分析和样品地质沉积特征分析获得样品的准确年龄。本文结合大量地质考古样品的单颗粒测年数据,重点阐述了单颗粒释光测年技术的原理、发展历程、实验流程、筛选条件和年龄模型。单颗粒释光技术为地质考古的精确定年提供了可能性,尤其是对由于晒退不充分等原因导致的等效剂量分散的样品,如过度分散值(OD)高达20%甚至超过50%的地质考古样品,提供了新的方法和及时支持。通过开展释光测年信号分析,选择不同的单颗粒样品年龄模型分析,可以得到较为可靠的年龄,为诸多地质考古遗迹建立年代学框架。  相似文献

ABSTRACT The Internal Zone of the Betic Cordilleras consists of several superimposed major thrust sheets with different P-T-t evolutions. On the basis of an integrated field, microscopic and laboratory study, the tectono-metamorphic history of the Mulhacen Complex and Almanzora Unit has been reconstructed in detail. The Mulhacen Complex has been affected by at least five phases of penetrative deformation, which have been labelled Dx-1, Dx, Dx+1, Dx+2 and Dx+3. Dx-1, and Dx are related to continent-continent collision, which is indicated by high pressure-low temperature (HP/LT) and subsequent intermediate P/T metamorphic conditions. Dx+1 is related to crustal thinning and heterogeneous extension. During this event the Almanzora Unit was juxtaposed against the Mulhacen Complex. This phase was succeeded by the establishment of low pressure-high temperature (LP/HT) conditions and at least two phases of folding and overthrusting. The Almanzora Unit shows a comparable tectono-metamorphic evolution post Dx+1. However, the P/T conditions prior to Dx+1 indicate a higher crustal position with respect to the Mulhacen Complex during the collisional event.  相似文献

目前,场地影响评价方法可以分为理论法和经验法。地脉动水平分量与竖向分量谱比法属经验法。这种方法将地脉动水平分量与竖向分量谱比的最大值对应的频率和幅值分别看作是观测场地的卓越频率和放大因子。虽然该法在国内外很多工程实例中得到了理想的结果。但由于这种方法建立过程中应用了许多假设,所以很多地震工程学家对这种方法持怀疑态度。本文讨论了基岩地脉动水平分量与竖向分量谱比为1这一假定的合理性。并采用泊松弹性半空间模型,应用概率分析方法考虑地脉动的随机性,推导了地下体波斜入射弹性半空间自由表面形成地脉动的水平分量与竖向分量谱比表达式。通过计算论证体波斜入射泊松弹性半空间形成的地脉动水平分量与竖向分量谱比特性。结果表明:当地脉动主要成分为体波时,基岩表面地脉动水平分量与竖向分量谱比接近于1;当地脉动主要成分为面波时,基岩表面地脉动水平分量与竖向分量谱比介于0.54~0.79之间。对泊松基岩,该比值是0.68。  相似文献

A statistical-thermodynamic approximation for order-disorder phase transitions in aluminosilicate solid solutions is presented. The approximation involves estimating the number of configurations with long range order parameter Q and short range order parameter σ, using an approximation to the probability that a configuration with the correct amount of long range order will also have the correct amount of short range order. This estimate is then used to give a free energy F(Q, σ, x, T), where x is the concentration of Al in the structure, and hence quantities such as T c (x) are estimated. The predictions of the model for T c (x) and the critical concentration x c at which T c falls to zero are shown to be in good agreement with the results of Monte Carlo simulations. One-atmosphere, anhydrous phase equilibria determined for alkali basalt/high-silica rhyolite mixtures provide a model for crystallization of natural calc-alkaline mixed magmas. The compositional trend defined by these mixtures mimics the trends of many continental calc-alkaline volcanic suites. As with many naturally occurring suites, the mixtures studied straddle the low-pressure olivine-plagioclase-augite thermal divide. Magma mixing provides a convenient method for magmas to cross this thermal divide in the absence of magnetite crystallization. For the mixtures, Mg-rich olivine (Fo82–87) coexists alone with liquid over an exceptionally large range of temperature and silica content (up to 63 wt% SiO2). This indicates that the Mg-rich olivines found in many andesites and dacites are not necessarily out of equilibrium with the host magma, as is commonly assumed. Such crystals may be either primary phenocrysts, or inherited phenocrysts derived from a mafic magma that mixed with a silicic magma. For the bulk compositions studied, the distribution of Fe and Mg between olivine and liquid (K D ) is equal to 0.3 and is independent of temperature and composition. This result extends to silicic andesites the applicability of K D arguments for tests of equilibrium between olivine and groundmass and for modeling of fractional crystallization. In contrast, the distribution of calcium and sodium between plagioclase and liquid varies significantly with temperature and composition. Therefore, plagioclase-liquid K D s cannot be used for fractional crystallization modeling or as a test of equilibrium. Calcic plagioclase from a basalt will be close to equilibrium with andesitic mixtures, but sodic plagioclase from a rhyolite will be greatly out of equilibrium. This explains the common observation that calcic plagioclase crystals in hybrid andesites are generally close to textural equilibrium with the surrounding groundmass, but sodic plagioclase crystals generally show remelting and armoring with calcic plagioclase.  相似文献

Geochemical data can be quantitatively modelled by means of Pearce diagrams. These are graphs of A/Z vs B/Z where A, B and Z are compositional abundances (e.g. wt.% SiO2, wt.% MgO, and ppm La) and Z has the additional property of having constant absolute abundance. In the terminology of igneous petrology, Z (the common denominator variable) could be an incompatible element. The numerators (A and B) may be complex algebraic combinations of elements, or even CIPW normative abundances. The utility of Pearce diagrams lies in the fact that slopes of data distributions equal the bulk AB ratio of minerals lost or gained from a suite of cogenetic rocks. There is no distortion because these plots correct for data closure. Terms of the form Ai·Z0/Zi (where Z0 is the abundance in a reference sample) remove the scaling to Ai caused by the abundance of a particular choice of Z. Subtraction of these terms for different samples (e.g. Ai·(Z0/Zi)-Aj· (Z0/Zj)) quantifies mineral losses and gains. Mathematical analysis shows that limited compatibility of the denominator variable is permitted. A bulk partition value (D) of 0.1 introduces an error of only 10% in values of Ai***-Z0/Zi, and 10° in slope-angle on Pearce diagrams over a crystallization interval of 50%. For D0.01 the error is minimal for a crystallization interval over 90%.  相似文献

Variation of major and trace elements in drilled basalts from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (DSDP Leg 37) reflects distinct cycles of low pressure fractionation operating independently within a complex network of magma storage reservoirs beneath the crustal spreading axis. Low pressure phase relations are determined by parental magma composition, which varies from An-rich (An/Di > ca. 1.4) to Di-rich (An/Di < ca. 1.4). High An/Di magmas probably formed under slightly hydrous conditions in the mantle. They have low LIL element contents, low P/Y and high Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios. Zr, P and Y abundance and inter-element ratios are highly diagnostic of primary magma type, and are used to quantify fractional crystallization models.Low pressure fractionation hypotheses were tested by least-squares modelling of whole-rock and phenocryst chemistry, which indicated removal or addition of phenocryst assemblages: ol; pl; ol + pl; ol + pl + cpx; pl + cpx, (± sp). Accumulation of plagioclase or olivine is an important mechanism for generating highly porphyritic rocks. A rare 3-phase (ol + pl + cpx) cumulate resulted from cotectic fractionation of a low An/Di magma type. Olivine and plagioclase cumulates appear to be related to high An/Di magmas. Olivine accumulation has been monitored by comparison of olivine/bulk rock partitioning of Fe and Mg to experimental measurements of the equilibrium KD value. A single extensive sub-axial magma chamber could not account for the observed chemical variation and would probably be dynamically unstable.  相似文献

Dhosa Oolite Member of the Jumara Formation comprises alternating bands of oolitic limestones and shales, exposed in Jhura dome of Mainland Kachchh, Western India. This sequence is highly bioturbated and exhibits a moderate diversity and behaviourally complex assemblage of ichnospecies. The rhythmically bedded sequence shows three different levels of preservation of traces. Epichnial tiering consists of moderately bioturbated oolitic limestone exhibiting horizontal or low-angle protrusive/retrusive biogenic laminae, commonly dominated by feeding structures like Rhizocorallium jenense, R. irregulare, Zoophycos brianteus and Zoophycos isp. The endichnial structures within the oolitic limestone can be separated into two different preservational trace fossil suites. The endichnial shallow suites consist chiefly of deposit feeders like Chondrites intricatus, C. targionii, Planolites beverleyensis, Taenidium cameronensis, Thalassinoides isp., Z. brianteus, Z. cf circinnatus and Zoophycos isp. and few suspension feeder forms like Palaeophycus tubularis; while endichnial deep suites consist of Chondrites intricatus, Skolithos linearis and Zoophycos isp. Hypichnial structures consists abundant, cylindrical, branched, horizontal, large-sized three dimensional feeding burrows of Thalassinoides isp. and somewhat irregular, obtuse angle ramification burrows of Phycodes isp., which are attached to the lower surface of the casting medium. The trace fossil association indicates Cruziana ichnofacies and abundance of Zoophycus species below the fair weather wave base level is largely a preservational artifact. The preservational processes of the trace fossils indicate soft substrate and diversity and their abundance reflects the other palaeoecological parameters of the open shallow marine environments.  相似文献

The free energy curves for simple binary solid solutions with limited miscibility or atomic ordering have been combined to predict the phase relations and exsolution mechanisms for a system in which both ordering and exsolution are possible. The nature of the ordering process affects which exsolution mechanisms may be used. If the ordering is second (or higher) order in character then continuous mechanisms predominate and a ‘conditional spinodal’ (Alien and Cahn, 1976) can be described which operates between ordered and disordered end members. For a first order case, the ordered phase can only precipitate a disordered phase by nucleation and growth. Microstructures in omphacites observed by transmission electron microscopy include exsolution lamellae and antiphase domains and the relations between them in selected specimens have been used to interpret the exsolution mechanisms which operated under geological conditions. It appears that most omphacites undergo cation ordering, and then remain homogeneous or exsolve a disordered pyroxene by spinodal decomposition. The predominance of continuous mechanisms has been used to indicate that the C2/cP2/n transformation may be second (or higher) order in character. A possible phase diagram for jadeite-augite is presented. It is based on the idea that there should be limited miscibility between the disordered end members at low temperatures and that the cation ordering at intermediate compositions (omphacite) is superimposed on a solvus. It is adequate to explain many of the observed microstructures and fits with petrographic evidence of broad two phase fields between impure jadeite and omphacite and between omphacite and sodic augite. The effect of adding acmite is analogous to increasing temperature so that the phase relations for jadeite-acmite-augite can also be predicted.  相似文献

Stratotectonic and morphotectonic data from the two principal exposed domains (pre‐Adelaidean rocks) of the Gawler sub‐province are used to characterize the Proterozoic Olarian orogeny and to distinguish its effects from those of the later Phanerozoic Delamerian orogeny.

The principal metasedimentary sequences in the Gawler domain and in the Willama domain are inferred to have been deposited in a single broad zone of early Proterozoic shallow‐water sedimentation on older (presumed Archaean) continental crust. The sequence becomes more pelitic upwards and may be interpreted as a transgressive sequence with more distal facies to the east.

Three main phases of deformation are recognized, and each phase has similar characteristics and age in both domains. D 1 2nd D2 can be dated between 1850 and 1650 Ma, while D3 appears to be about 1650–1540 Ma.

In high grade rocks, D1 gave rise to a layer‐parallel schistosity, while D 2 is characterized by tight folds with a high‐grade axial‐plane schistosity. The whole sub‐province was characterized by high geothermal gradients so that medium‐ to high‐grade metamorphism affected the lower parts of the succession before and during the D1 and D2 deformation episodes. No distinct tectonic zones can be recognized but large‐scale stratigraphic inversions (i.e. nappe tectonics) during D 1 have been recognized only in the east of the Willyama domain. The higher parts of the stratigraphic succession are generally less deformed and exhibit only low‐grade metamorphism.

D 3 produced relatively open, upright macroscopic folds and was characteristically associated with retrogression, but was demonstrably of pre‐Adelaidean age. The Gawler domain exhibits D 3 structures although it lies in the platform west of the Adelaide Geosyncline and was not affected by deformation during Adelaidean sedimentation or by the subsequent Delamerian orogeny. A network of retrograde shear zones is the principal expression of post‐Olarian deformation in the Willyama domain which forms part of the basement to the Adelaide Geosyncline.

The trends of D 2 and D 3 folding in the two domains are similar and it is shown therefore that no large‐scale rotations of one domain relative to the other has been produced by the Delamerian orogeny. Large‐scale translations on discrete faults or on broad zones of simple shear in the basement are not easily ruled out, but if they exist, are probably largely of pre‐Adelaidean age. However, a significant relationship between Olarian structures and variable Adelaidean fold trends has been deduced.

The Olarian orogeny may have occurred in close proximity to a continental margin to the east and may thus be related to subduction processes. It differs from linear gneissic belts in Phanerozoic orogenies since it occurs in a more stable stratotectonic environment and over a wider area.  相似文献
