The convective stability of a simple model chromosphere is investigated. The model chromosphere consists of protons, electrons, and hydrogen atoms in the ground state; ionization is collisional and recombination is radiative. The analysis indicates stability when the kinetic temperature (T) is less than 17 500K (assuming T increases with height). However, for T > 17 500K, the model chromosphere is overstable in the absence of magnetic fields provided the temperature inversion is sufficiently steep. For smaller values of the temperature gradient, field-free regions are stable if the density is small and monotonically unstable if it is large. In the presence of a magnetic field, the model chromosphere is monotonically unstable for T > 17 500K, regardless of the temperature gradient. The convective instability of the model chromosphere results from the fact that the plasma is thermally unstable for T > 17 500K. Thermally unstable regions of the solar atmosphere, although not represented in detail by the model, should behave in a similar fashion.Field-free regions of the solar chromosphere are probably not monotonically unstable, but overstability is possible and may explain the origin of chromospheric oscillations with periods less than 200 sec. It is suggested that spicules result from the monotonic instability of magnetic regions. A similar instability in the corona may be responsible for the large Doppler spreading of radar echoes.Elementary considerations of thermal balance predict that the temperature gradient should diverge at levels of marginal stability. The chromospheric region of spicule formation and the corona should therefore both be bounded below by abrupt temperature jumps.  相似文献

The physical properties of the quiet solar chromosphere–corona transition region are studied. Here the structure of the solar atmosphere is governed by the interaction of magnetic fields above the photosphere. Magnetic fields are concentrated into thin tubes inside which the field strength is great. We have studied how the plasma temperature, density, and velocity distributions change along a magnetic tube with one end in the chromosphere and the other one in the corona, depend on the plasma velocity at the chromospheric boundary of the transition region. Two limiting cases are considered: horizontally and vertically oriented magnetic tubes. For various plasma densities we have determined the ranges of plasma velocities at the chromospheric boundary of the transition region for which no shock waves arise in the transition region. The downward plasma flows at the base of the transition region are shown to be most favorable for the excitation of shock waves in it. For all the considered variants of the transition region we show that the thermal energy transfer along magnetic tubes can be well described in the approximation of classical collisional electron heat conduction up to very high velocities at its base. The calculated extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission agrees well with the present-day space observations of the Sun.  相似文献

A new model is proposed for the solar chromosphere, which is assumed to be an instable inhomogeneous formation, consisting of numerous elements (filaments), each with different temperature and density. Fluctuations of the magnetic field may give rise to chromospheric turbulence and may also cause the chromospheric inhomogeneities. The chromosphere is suggested to consist of four discrete groups of filaments: (1) metallic filaments where the conditions for the emission of lines of neutral metals are optimal, (2) hydrogenic elements, with optimum conditions for the emission of the Balmer series of hydrogen, (3) helium filaments, with optimum conditions for the appearence of the neutral helium lines, (4) the subcoronal filaments, representing a transition from chromospheric to coronal formations. The metallic filaments may be further subdivided, first into filaments where the emission arises from scattering of photospheric radiation - these emit lines of neutral metals and of some metallic ions (CaII, SrII, and others), and further into filaments where the emission is farther from LTE conditions; the latter filaments are characterized by a somewhat higher electron temperature and by an electron density at least exceeding that of the other elements by an order of 10. Computations of the optimum conditions for the emission of the neutral helium lines were made with the aid of new tables of Sobolev. The helium filaments in the low chromosphere have lower temperatures and are denser than those in the upper chromosphere; for a part they may also be considered as hydrogen filaments. The derivation of the physical parameters of the subcoronal filaments was based on data on the Heii4686 chromospheric line emission and also on rocket observations of the ultraviolet solar spectrum. In order to evaluate the relative distribution of the various filaments between heights of 0 and 5000 km, data on the radio emission of the Sun at 8 mm are also used. Characteristics of the proposed model of the chromosphere are given in Table III and Figure 1.  相似文献

Some parameters of chromospheric structure are drawn from recently published XUV spectroheliograms. The HeII emission above the limb arises from the small amount of He+ still existing at 106°. The larger amounts of He+ in the cooler corona at the poles explain the polar cap absorption in 304. The flat distribution of emission in Oiv and Ov, with a sharp spike at the limb, is caused by the rough structure of the chromosphere and the variable excitation in the emitting spicules. The intensity of the Nevii lines shows that the transition zone between chromosphere and corona is very sharp. This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant NASA NGR 05 002 034.  相似文献

Spicules are an important very dynamical and rather cool structure extending between the solar surface and the corona. They are partly filling the space inside the chromosphere and they are surrounded by a transition thin layer. New space observations taken with the SOT of the Hinode mission shed some light on their still mysterious formation and dynamics. Here we restrict the analysis to the most radial and the most interesting polar spicules situated at the base of the fast solar wind of coronal holes. We consider a first important parameter of spicules as observed above the solar visible limb: their apparent diameter as a function of the height above the limb which determines their aspect ratio and leads to the discussion of their magnetic origin using the flux tube approximation. We found that indeed spicules show a whole range of diameters, including unresolved “interacting spicules” (I-S), depending of the definition chosen to characterize this ubiquitous dynamical phenomenon occurring into a low coronal surrounding. Superposition effects along the line of sight have to be taken into account in order to correctly measure individual spicules and look at I-S. We take advantage of the so-called mad-max operator to reduce these effects and improve the visibility of these hair-like features. An excellent time sequence of images obtained above a polar region with the Hinode SOT through the HCaII filter with a cadence of 8 s was selected for analysis. 1-D Fourier amplitude spectra (AS) made at different heights above the limb are shown for the first time. A definite signature in the 0.18–0.25 Mm range exists, corresponding to the occurrence of the newly discovered type II spicules and, even more impressively, large Fourier amplitudes are observed in the 0.3–1.2 Mm range of diameters and spacing, in rough agreement with what historical works were reporting. Additionally, some statistically significant behavior, based on AS computed for different heights above the limb, is discussed.“Time slice or xt diagrams” revealing the dynamical behavior of spicules are also analyzed. They show that most of spicules have multiple structures (similarly to the doublet spicules) and they show impressive transverse periodic fluctuations which were interpreted as upward kink or Alfven waves. Evidence of the helical motion in spicules is now well evidenced, the typical periods of the apparent oscillation being around 120 s. A fine analysis of the time-slice diagram as a function of the effective heights shows an interesting new feature near the 2 Mm height. We speculate on the interpretation of this feature as being a result of the dynamical specificities of the spicule helical motion as seen in these unprecedented high resolution HCaII line emission time series.  相似文献

The problem of hydrodynamic response of the solar chromosphere on impulsive heating by energetic electrons is discussed. All basic physical processes are considered in a one-dimensional approximation, due to presence of a strong magnetic field. The calculations are performed for the heating of the chromosphere by electrons having a power-law energetic spectrum. In the upper chromosphere the electron temperature rises rapidly to values of order 107 K. The ion temperature is more than the order of magnitude less than the temperature of electrons. The heated high-temperature chromospheric plasma expands into corona with a velocity up to 1500 km s–1. In more dense layers, the fast re-emission of supplied energy takes place. This process gives rise to short-lived EUV flash. Just below the flare transition layer the thermal instability produces cold plasma condensation which moves downward at a velocity exceeding the sonic one in the quiet chromosphere.  相似文献

We study the propagation of a train of acoustic shocks guided by diverging magnetic fields through a static model of the solar chromospheric network and transition region. Our results show that for initial flux densities of the order 106 ergs cm–2 s–1 in the lower chromosphere, the local efficiency of acoustic transmission into the corona can be much higher than calculated for a plane parallel atmosphere. Thus acoustic energy will tend to be deposited at higher chromospheric levels in diverging magnetic fields, and magnetic guiding may well influence the temperature profile of the network and plages. But the total flux that can be transmitted into the corona along such diverging fields is severely limited, since the magnetic elements occupy a small fractional area of the photosphere, and the transmission efficiency is a rapidly decreasing function of initial acoustic flux density. We conclude that diverging magnetic fields and a varying ratio of specific heats are not likely to allow high frequency shocks to dissipate high enough in a static atmosphere, to contribute significantly to the coronal energy balance. This result strengthens the view that acoustic waves do not heat the solar corona. However, the conclusion may be sensitive to the influence of observed mass motions, such as spicules.  相似文献

A large percent of spicules shows a surge-like behavior on the solar limb, supporting a multi-component model with twisted threads. The counterpart of limb spicules foot-points is investigated on the disk, and this re-examination indicates that the interpretation of transverse motion of off-limb spicules could directly be related to rotational motion at the feet of disk spicules. Related bright elements move and vary in brightness on the timescales of chromospheric oscillations. The motions are similar to random displacements of the bright elements along the network boundaries with amplitudes of about 200 to 400 km, with evidence of “spinning” or vortex motion. We find a clear evidence and in several cases for splitting process and suggesting a formation mechanism for doublet (or multi-component) spicules. A general inter chromospheric network velocity pattern with twists existing before the emergence and eruption of spicules seems to be required. In this paper a helical- kink mode propagation consistent with the new evidence of spicule multiple structure is presented and provides an explanation for the origin of the Alfvenic wave propagation along the spicules. The evidence of spinning spicules remains unclear from disk Dopplergram observations, we use a 3D time slice “column” diagrams (2D in x and y and time in z being the 3d dimension) by consecutive partly transparent slices put in perspective to show the rotational behavior at the chromospheric rosettes, and provide a wealth of information on spinning motion, helical wave propagation and splitting.  相似文献

Some properties of the solar spicules as observed outside the limb through a Halle K-filter at the centre of the line are investigated. The observations have been made at the Pic-du-Midi Observatory. The results are as follows: (a) The chromosphere at the limb appears more diffuse in the K line than in the H line, the spicules being not well resolved. (b) The ratio of spicule intensity to the background intensity increases with height, as in the case of H spicules, but it is, in every height, smaller than that in H. (c) The spicule mean width is measured photometrically and found equal to 1900 km. (d) The lifetime is found to be 4.5 min. (e) The mean chromospheric height is estimated to be 6.000 km.  相似文献

The weakening of the EUV line emission near the Sun's limb is studied to acquire information about the absorbers causing the weakening. The equivalent optical thickness of the absorbers for the Lyman continuum is determined as a function of the distance from the center of the solar disk by use of Skylab spectroheliograms in Oiv λ554 and Ovi λ1032. It is found that (1) the weakening cannot be explained by shielding of EUV emitting sources in terms of completely opaque spicules and (2) the distribution of the equivalent optical thickness on the solar disk is extremely flat with a maximum at a position of ~ 5″ above the white-light limb. The results imply that the absorbers are a number of mass blobs consisting of cool chromospheric material which overlies the EUV emitting sources. It is suggested that both the EUV emitting sources and the absorbers are the remnants of Hα-emitting spicules which are diffused into the corona.  相似文献

A distribution map of the large-scale chromospheric Doppler velocities on the solar disk for 5 June 2002 is presented. The map was obtained using a 2D-spectroscopy technique within the He?i 10830 Å line. The spatial resolution of the map is about 30 arc sec. The map demonstrates a downflow in the chromosphere over active regions, especially significant around the spots and inside the plages. Positive Doppler velocities correspond to strong magnetic field areas, regardless of the field sign. Three major chromospheric outflow zones are observed: an equatorial and two polar ones. Each area of substantial negative Doppler velocities matches a zone of weak intensity of inner corona observed within the Fe?ix-x 171 Å line by the SOHO spacecraft. A Doppler velocity histogram and the dependence of the Doppler velocities on the cosine of the heliocentric angle for the solar disk are calculated. The total mass outflow from the upper chromosphere is estimated as 2×1013 g s?1. Four percent of this amount is sufficient to produce the fast solar wind.

The short-term variation of solar indices, though typically near the solar rotation period of 27 days, can often deviate considerably from 27 days, in a wide range ∼ 19–33 days. The peak locations are within a day or two for all solar indices, indicating that the whole of the solar atmosphere is affected in a similar way. There are no systematic differences between the peaks of the chromosphere and the corona as such, but F10, X-rays, and coronal green line, which have uncertainties about their solar altitudes of origin, do show some differences (earlier peaks) as compared to other indices (chromospheric as well as coronal).  相似文献

High resolution filtergrams of the solar limb in D3 and off-band H have been used to investigate the spatial structure of the D3 chromosphere. It was found that spicules provide the major contribution to the intensity of the D3 emission band observed above the limb, with the remainder of the emission coming from a semi-homogeneous background component at low heights. The observations can be understood on the basis of the photoionization model, whereby it is found that helium is only slightly ionized at the height of peak intensity in the D3 emission band, and that spicules are at least 3 times denser than their surroundings at this height. In coronal holes, the D3 emission is confined to isolated emission patches, and these patches contain a fine structure resembling normal chromospheric spicules.  相似文献

The rotational behaviour of the chromosphere, observed in the Ca ii K3 line, is studied during 1972–1973, years of decreasing solar activity. Daily chromospheric filtergrams, detected at the Anacapri Observatory, are digitized by means of a flying-spot photometer, controlled by computer. The time series of the daily chromospheric data detected at central meridian, relative to 30 consecutive latitude zones, are analyzed to determine the recurrence tendency due to the rotation of long-lived chromospheric features. The computed rotation rate is independent of latitude, in agreement with the results obtained for the green corona during the years before sunspot minimum. Namely both chromospheric and coronal features, with lifetime exceeding one solar rotation, are almost not affected by differential rotation before sunspot minimum.  相似文献

This paper studies two properties of chromospheric spicules: their angular distribution and the plasma velocity along their axes. To investigate the first property, we measured the apparent tilt of spicules at the limb, and then computed their actual distribution in space. This was achieved by solving first kind Fredholm or Volterra integral equations by various methods. The distribution of the axial velocity of the spicule plasma was studied on the basis of two types of observations: (1) the height variation of the spicules as a function of time and (2) the Doppler shift of the spectral lines. The resulting velocity distributions, using the experimental data of these two sets of observations, are quite different. The average velocity based on the Doppler shift measurements ( 40 km s–1) is greater than that based on height variation of spicules ( 20 km s–1). This is due to the ionization of the material as it penetrates the corona.

Summary The width of spicules as a function of time was measured on films taken by R. B. Dunn (Figures la and 2). We could establish very clearly a broadening phenomenon, due to the diffusion of spicular matter into the corona. An empirical model of spicules is given (Table I) and compared with that of the surrounding corona (Figure 4). The mass-balance between spicules and flocculi is computed.

A hyperbolic flux-tube configuration containing a null point below the flux rope is considered as a pre-eruptive state of coronal mass ejections that start simultaneously with flares. We demonstrate that this configuration is unstable and cannot exist for a long time in the solar corona. The inference follows from general equilibrium conditions and from analyzing simple models of the flux-rope equilibrium. A direct consequence of the stable flux-rope equilibrium in the corona are separatrices in the horizontal-field distribution in the chromosphere. They can be recognized as specific “herring-bone structures” in a chromospheric fibril pattern.  相似文献

Small-scale explosive events or microflares occur throughout the chromospheric network of the Sun. They are seen as sudden bursts of highly Doppler-shifted spectral lines of ions formed at temperatures in the range 2×104–5×105 K. They tend to occur near regions of cancelling photospheric magnetic fields and are thought to be directly associated with magnetic field reconnection. Recent observations have revealed that they have a bi-directional jet structure reminiscent of Petschek reconnection. In this paper compressible MHD simulations of the evolution of a current sheet to a steady Petschek, jet-like configuration are computed using the Versatile Advection Code. We obtain velocity profiles that can be compared with recent ultraviolet line-profile observations. By choosing initial conditions representative of magnetic loops in the solar corona and chromosphere, it is possible to explain the fact that jets flowing outward into the corona are more extended and appear before jets flowing towards the chromosphere. This model can reproduce the high Doppler-shifted components of the line profiles, but the brightening at low velocities, near the center of the bi-directional jet, cannot be explained by this simple MHD model.  相似文献
