Ephemerides of planetary satellites are needed to address many problems. These ephemerides are used for subsequent observations. A comparison of the available ephemerides with new observations allows the accuracy of the former to be assessed. However, the precision of the ephemerides must be known a priori when solving the tasks. In this paper we formulate and solve the problem of estimating the precision of the ephemerides of outer planetary satellites derived from observations when applied up to the future moments. The methods of assessing the precision of ephemerides involve producing a set of samples of the same ephemeris inferred from observations with different samples of Monte Carlo generated random errors (RO) superimposed onto it. The statistical parameters of simulated observational errors are based on the results of the reduction of real satellite observations. We compute the deviations of the samples of the ephemeris from the standard ephemeris inferred from real observations and adopt the root-mean-square deviation of the apparent coordinates as the precision of the ephemeris. We also use alternative methods: one based on the matrix of covariances of parameter errors (RP), and another one based on bootstrap samples of observations (BS).We use three methods (RO, RP, and BS) to estimate the precision of the ephemerides of all the 107 outer planetary satellites over the 2010-2020 time interval. The precision of the ephemerides of different satellites varies from 0.05 to 4.0 arcsec. For a number of satellites new observations are of vital importance for maintaining the precision of the ephemerides at a level that would allow identification of satellites during the reduction of observations. For some satellites the precision of their ephemerides is of the order of the sizes of their orbits and such satellites can be considered to have been lost. We show that the method of bootstrap samples (BS) can give doubtful results in the cases where there are few observations, which covered a time interval that is shorter than the orbital period of the satellite. Our results suggest obtaining more precise ephemeris making new observations at the times of maximum estimated errors of the ephemeris. All the inferred estimates of the precision of ephemerides are available from the MULTI-SAT ephemeris server: www.imcce.fr/sat (IMCCE), www.sai.msu.ru/neb/nss/index.htm (SAI).  相似文献

We suggest a new approach and develop an original method for deriving astrometric data from the photometry of mutual occultations and eclipses of planetary satellites. We decide to model not the relative apparent motion of one satellite with respect to another satellite but the deflection of the observed relative motion with respect to the theoretical motion implied by appropriate ephemerides. We have attempted to reduce the results of photometric observations of the Gallilean satellites during their mutual occultations and eclipses in 2002-2003. The data of observation for 319 light curves of 106 mutual events were received from the observers. The reliable 245 light curves were processed with our method. Eighty six apparent relative positions have been obtained.Systematic errors arise inevitably while deriving astrometric data. Most of them are due to factors that are unrelated to the methods for deriving astrometric data. The systematic errors are more likely due to incorrect excluding the effect of background on photometric counts. In the case of mutual occultations, the flux drop is determined to a considerable degree by the ratio of the mean albedos of the two satellites. Some mutual event observations revealed wrong adopted values of the mean albedos.  相似文献

New versions of the ephemerides for the Galilean satellites of Jupiter (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto) constructed by numerically integrating the equations of motion of the satellites are presented. The satellite motionmodel takes into account the non-sphericity of Jupiter, the mutual perturbations of the satellites, and the perturbations from the Sun and major planets. The initial satellite motion parameters have been improved based on all the available series of ground-based optical observations spanning the interval 1891-2017, spacecraft observations, and radar observations. As a result, the coefficients of the expansion of the satellite coordinates and velocities in terms of Chebyshev polynomials in the interval 1891- 2025 have been obtained. The root-mean-square errors of the observations and the graphs of comparison of the constructed ephemerides both with the observations and with Lainey's numerical ephemerides are presented. The constructed ephemerides are publicly accessible.  相似文献

Numerous studies in the past few years have analyzed possible effects of planetary migration on the small bodies of the Solar System (mainly asteroids and KBOs), with the double aim of explaining certain dynamical structures in these systems, as well as placing limits on the magnitude of the radial migration of the planets. Here we undertake a similar aim, only this time concentrating on the dynamical stability of planetary satellites in a migration scenario. However, different from previous works, the strongest perturbations on satellite systems are not due to the secular variation of the semimajor axes of the planets, but from the planetesimals themselves. These perturbations result from close approaches between the planetesimals and satellites. We present results of several numerical simulations of the dynamical evolution of real and fictitious satellite systems around the outer planets, under the effects of multiple passages of a population of planetesimals representing the large-body component of a residual rocky disk. Assuming that this component dominated the total mass of the disk, our results show that the present systems of satellites of Uranus and Neptune do not seem to be compatible with a planetary migration larger than even one quarter that suggested by previous studies, unless these bodies were originated during the late stage of evaporation of the planetesimal disk. For larger variations of the semimajor axes of the planets, most of the satellites would either be ejected from the system or suffer mutual collisions due to excitation in their eccentricities. For the systems of Jupiter and Saturn, these perturbations are not so severe, and even large migrations do not introduce large instabilities.Nevertheless, even a small number of 1000-km planetesimals in the region may introduce significant excitation in the eccentricities and inclinations of satellites. Adequate values of this component may help explain the present dynamical distribution of distant satellites, including the highly peculiar orbit of Nereid.  相似文献

The photometry of mutual occultations and eclipses of natural planetary satellites can be used to infer very accurate astrometric data. This can be achieved by processing the light curves of the satellites observed during international campaigns of photometric observations of these mutual events.
This work focuses on processing the complete data base of photometric observations of the mutual occultations and eclipses of the Galilean satellites made during the international campaign in 2002–2003. The final goal is to derive new accurate astrometric data.
We propose the most accurate photometric model of mutual events based on all the data available to date about the satellites, and develop the corresponding method for extracting astrometric data. This method is applied to derive astrometric data from photometric observations of mutual occultations and eclipses of the Galilean satellites.
We process the 371 light curves obtained during the international campaign of photometric observations of the Galilean satellites in 2002–2003. As compared with the theory, the rms 'O-C' residuals with respect to theory is equal to 0.055 and 0.064 arcsec in right ascension and declination, respectively, for the 274 best observations. Topocentric or heliocentric angular differences for satellite pairs are obtained for 119 time instants during the time period from 2002 October 10 to 2003 July 17.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze the results of ground-based and space-born photometric observations of the major satellites of Uranus—Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. All sets of photometric observations of the satellites available in the literature were examined for uniformity and systematic differences and summarized to a unified set by wavelength ranging from 0.25 to 2.4 μm. This set covers the interval of phase angles from 0.034° to 35°. The compound phase curves of brightness of the satellites in the spectral bands at 0.25, 0.41, 0.48, 0.56, 0.75, 0.91, 1.4, and 1.8 μm, which include a pronounced opposition surge and linear part, were constructed. For each satellite, the geometric albedo was found in different spectral bands taking into account the brightness opposition effect, and its spectral dependence was studied. It has been shown that the reflectance of the satellites linearly depends on the wavelength at different phase angles, but has different spectral gradients. The parameters of the phase functions of brightness, including the amplitude and the angular width of the brightness opposition surge, the phase coefficient, and the phase angle at which the nonlinear increase in brightness starts, were determined and their dependences on wavelength and geometric albedo were analyzed. Our investigations show that, in their optical properties, the satellites Miranda and Ariel, Titania and Oberon, and Umbriel present three types of surfaces. The observed parameters of the brightness opposition effect for the Uranian satellites, some ice satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, and the E-and S-type asteroids are analyzed and compared within the framework of the coherent backscattering and mutual shadowing mechanisms.  相似文献

The recently discovered coorbital satellites of Saturn, 1980S1 and 1980S3, are shown to be librating in horseshoe orbits. By considering the effects of tangential forces on the semimajor axes of the satellite orbits, we derive an accurate relation between the sum of the satellite masses and (a) their minimum angular separation, (b) the variation of their angular separation with time and (c) the libration period. Observations of (b) and (c) are the most practical methods of determining the satellite masses. The orbits of the coorbital satellites of Dione and Tethys are discussed. We demonstrate the possibility of calculating a new value for the mass of Dione and we show that one of the coorbital satellites of Tethys could be moving in a horseshoe orbit even though another satellite is librating in a tadpole orbit about the leading Lagrangian equilibrium point L4. The origin of coorbital satellites and the stability of their orbits are discussed.  相似文献

This paper argues that the Milky Way galaxy is probably the largest member of the Local Group. The evidence comes from estimates of the total mass of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) derived from the three-dimensional positions and radial velocities of its satellite galaxies, as well as the projected positions and radial velocities of its distant globular clusters and planetary nebulae. The available data set comprises 10 satellite galaxies, 17 distant globular clusters and nine halo planetary nebulae with radial velocities. We find that the halo of Andromeda has a mass of together with a scalelength of 90 kpc and a predominantly isotropic velocity distribution. For comparison, our earlier estimate for the Milky Way halo is Although the error bars are admittedly large, this suggests that the total mass of M31 is probably less than that of the Milky Way . We verify the robustness of our results to changes in the modelling assumptions and to errors caused by the small size and incompleteness of the data set.
Our surprising claim can be checked in several ways in the near future. The numbers of satellite galaxies, planetary nebulae and globular clusters with radial velocities can be increased by ground-based spectroscopy, while the proper motions of the companion galaxies and the unresolved cores of the globular clusters can be measured using the astrometric satellites Space Interferometry Mission ( SIM ) and Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics ( GAIA ). Using 100 globular clusters at projected radii 20 R 50 kpc with both radial velocities and proper motions, it will be possible to estimate the mass within 50 kpc to an accuracy of 20 per cent. Measuring the proper motions of the companion galaxies with SIM and GAIA will reduce the uncertainty in the total mass caused by the small size of the data set to 22 per cent.  相似文献

We present the results of photometric observations of Saturn's seventh satellite Hyperion and four other planetary satellites: Saturn's moon Phoebe and three Jovian satellites Himalia, Elara, and Pasiphae. The observations have been conducted from September, 1999 to March, 2000, and during September–October, 2000. Analysis of periodic variations in Hyperion's lightcurve was performed. The lightcurve was modeled using the software package developed for calculating the rotational dynamics of a satellite. Our data generally indicate that over the period of observations Hyperion was in the chaotic mode of rotation.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility of gravitational capture of planetesimals as temporary or permanent satellites of Uranus and Neptune during the process of planetary growth. The capture mechanism is based in the enhancement of the Hill's sphere of action not only due to the mass acquired by the planet, but also by the variation of the planet-Sun distance as a consequence of the scattering of planetesimals by the planets of the outer solar system. Our calculations indicate that satellite capture was very important, specially during the first stages of the accretion process, contributing in a significant way to the planetary growth.  相似文献

We carried out observations of mutual events in Saturn’s system of satellites as part of the PHESAT95 International Program. Three light curves of these events were obtained. We developed a technique of allowance for the influence of the law of light reflection from the surfaces of Saturn’s satellites, photometric nonuniformity of their surfaces, the phase effect, and the illumination distribution in the satellite penumbra (given the brightness distribution over the solar disk) on the light curve of an occultation or eclipse of one satellite by another. This technique is used to interpret our observations of these events and to determine the minimum separations between satellites or between a satellite and the shadow center of another satellite and the corresponding timings.  相似文献

Most of the positions of faint satellite images obtained during the 1966 Saturn ring plane crossing fit the period of the coorbital satellites 1980 S1 and 1980 S3. In 1966 the satellites were separated by 137° in orbital longitude. Until the mutual interaction of the satellites is understood and applied to derive the precise orbital motion, the 1966 and 1980 observations cannot be linked.  相似文献

Abstracts—A special method of ground-based observations of natural planetary satellites is described. A higher accuracy of observations is reached at the periods of their visible encounters as two satellites fall within the same CCD frame. For the outermost natural satellites, such events are very rare. The circumstances of the visible encounters of the outermost satellites of Jupiter are precalculated for two years to come and are presented in this paper. The observations of these satellites are particularly important in solving the problems connected with the origin and evolution of small bodies in the Solar System.  相似文献

The K2’s Campaign 9 (K2C9) by the Kepler satellite for microlensing observations towards the Galactic bulge started on April 7, 2016, and is going to last for about three months. It offers the first chance to measure the masses of members of the large population of the isolated dark low-mass objects further away in our Galaxy, free-floating planets (FFPs). Intentionally, this observational period of K2 will overlap with that of the 2016 Spitzer follow-up microlensing project expected to start in June, 2016. Therefore, for the first time it is going to be possible to observe simultaneously the same microlensing events from a ground-based telescope and two satellites. This will help in removing the two-fold degeneracy of the impact parameter and in estimating the FFP mass, provided that the angular Einstein ring radius ΘE is measured. In this paper we calculate the probability that a microlensing event is detectable by two or more telescopes and study how it depends on the mass function index of FFPs and the position of the observers on the orbit.  相似文献

The surface reflectance properties of the irregular outer planets satellites are probed for evidence for the presence of aqueous alteration products on their surfaces using the strong correlation between the 3.0-μm water of hydration absorption feature and the 0.7-μm Fe2+ → Fe3+ oxidized iron feature seen in low-albedo asteroid reflectances, in an effort to expand our understanding of the composition of the precursor bodies from which the dynamical satellite clusters are derived. Equations converting Johnson V and Kron-Cousins RI photometry to Eight Color Asteroid Survey v (0.550 μm), w (0.701 μm), and x (0.853 μm) photometry are derived from relationships defined by Howell (1995, Ph.D. thesis), and coupled with an algorithm previously defined to detect the presence of the 0.7-μm absorption feature in ECAS asteroid photometry [Vilas, F., 1994. Icarus 111, 456-467]. Broadband VRI photometry of Ch-class Asteroid 19 Fortuna acquired during 2004 confirms the efficacy of this method of identifying the presence of the 0.7-μm feature. Photometric observations of many recently discovered irregular outer jovian, saturnian, uranian, and neptunian satellites, coupled with limited asteroid spectroscopy, were examined for the presence of aqueous alteration. The dynamical clusters of outer irregular jovian satellites are mixed between objects that do and do not show this absorption feature. Multiple observations of some objects test both positively and negatively, similar to the surface variegation that has been observed among many C-class asteroids in the main asteroid belt. Evidence for aqueous alteration on these jovian satellites augers for an origin in or near the same location as the asteroids now occupying the aqueous alteration zone (2.6-3.5 AU), at heliocentric distances internal to Jupiter's orbit. Among the saturnian irregular satellites, only S IX Phoebe shows limited evidence of aqueous alteration from ground-based observations. The other satellites show no sign of this feature, and have general reflectance properties very similar to the D-class asteroids, supporting an origin for their precursor bodies in the outer Solar System, perhaps the Centaur region. Only two uranian satellites were tested: U XVII Caliban tests positively for the feature. The differences in surface reflectance properties support the idea that Caliban and U XVI Sycorax derive from separate parent bodies. One observation of neptunian satellite N II Nereid shows no sign of this absorption feature.  相似文献

We have obtained broadband spectrophotometric observations of four of the recently discovered small satellites of Saturn (Gladman et al., 2001, Nature 412, 163-166). The new data enable an understanding of the provenance, composition, and interrelationships among these satellites and the other satellites of Saturn, particularly Iapetus, Phoebe, and Hyperion. Temporal coverage of one satellite (S21 Tarvos) was sufficient to determine a partial rotational lightcurve. Our major findings include: (1) the satellites are red and similar in color, comparable to D-type asteroids, some KBOs, Iapetus, and Hyperion; (2) none of the satellites, including those from the “Phoebe Group” has any spectrophotometric relationship to Phoebe; and (3) S21 Tarvos exhibits a rotational lightcurve, although the data are not well-constrained and more observations are required to fit a definitive period. Dust created by meteoritic impacts and ejected from these satellites and additional undiscovered ones may be the source of the exogenous material deposited on the low-albedo side of Iapetus. Recent work which states that the small irregular satellites of Saturn have impacted Phoebe at least 6-7 times in the age of the Solar System (Nesvorny et al., 2003, Astron. J. 126, 398-429), suggests that such collisions may have propelled additional material from both Phoebe and the small irregular satellites toward Iapetus. The accretion of material from outer retrograde satellites may be a process that also occurs on Callisto and the uranian satellites.  相似文献

The upcoming crossing of the Sun and the Earth through the equatorial plane of the planet Uranus presents an opportunity to observe mutual eclipses and occultations of the uranian satellites. We present predictions for 321 such events from 2006 to 2010. 230 of these events are “nominal” i.e. they are predicted to occur based on the currently available ephemeris while a further 91 “grazing” events are allowable given the positional uncertainties of the satellites. Taking into account the statistical frequency of events that occur too close to the planet, during solar conjunction or are too “shallow” to observe, we conclude that about 150 events should be detectable from different longitudes around the world. We argue that a worldwide campaign of photometric observations of these events will yield, as in the case of the jovian and saturnian systems, high-precision astrometric information on the satellites toward improving their ephemerides as well as the system constants (satellite masses, uranian zonal harmonics, etc.). In addition, mathematical inversion of the lightcurves should permit, subject to the photometric quality and number of observed events, mapping of albedo variegations over the satellite hemispheres that were in darkness during the Voyager 2 encounter with the uranian system in 1985/1986.  相似文献

This paper presents the final results of the campaign of photometric observations of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter at the time of their mutual occultations and eclipses at the epoch of 1997 at observatories of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. These results essentially contribute to the worldwide database of this type. They will help to refine the models of motion of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter. A comparison is made of the obtained data with the results of the worldwide campaign of observations of mutual occultations and eclipses in 1997. From the results of these observations, the differences of planetocentric coordinates of two satellites are calculated for a sequence of instants of time. Processing is based on the theory and the model of mutual occultations and eclipses of natural planetary satellites, which were developed by one of the authors in previous papers (Emel'yanov, 1999, 2000). In this paper, some new elements of the technique were used. We estimated the accuracy of observations. The paper contains information on the observing conditions and describes briefly the instruments employed.  相似文献

Salient features of the analysis of the mutual event light curves of planetary satellites are presented. The need to carefully evaluate the flux contribution of the occulting/eclipsing satellite to the total flux is illustrated. Albedo variations on the satellites will produce signatures on the mutual event light curves. The partial events of the upcoming mutual event series of the uranian satellites can be modeled taking into account the albedo variations inferred from the maps of the southern regions imaged by Voyager 2 when only these regions are occulted/eclipsed. This will enable a robust determination of the astrometric parameters. The shape and asymmetry of the mutual event light curves along with the rotational light curves of the satellites obtained simultaneously during the planet's equinox crossing period can be utilized to obtain a coarse albedo map of the northern hemisphere of the satellites. These studies will also help in investigating possible changes in the known southern regions since the 1986 encounter of Voyager 2.  相似文献
