Desert pavement surfaces of the eastern Libyan Plateau in central Egypt represent a stable landscape preserving Middle and Upper Paleolithic artifacts. Detailed measurements of pavement clasts indicate significant variability in clast size, density, lithology and orientation between pavements, but no spatial relationship among any of these pavement variables over the study area. Pavement characteristics are unrelated to local geomorphic features including slope gradient and aspect, suggesting a desert pavement surface that has developed without significant influence from transporting mechanisms such as overland flow and slope failure. Meridional vertical cracks in surface clasts implicate thermal stresses due to diurnal solar variation as a mechanical weathering process, whereas the presence of a clast-free silty layer within all soil profiles indicates that these are accretionary pavement surfaces that have grown upward over time. The desert pavement in this region has likely developed in situ through mechanical breakdown of surface clasts and desert pedogenesis, indicating long-term stability for this region and minimal taphonomic effects on artifacts > 2 cm in diameter deposited on this surface over the last ca. 100 ka.  相似文献

Summary. The Oblique Seismic Experiment (OSE) has been proposed to increase the usefulness of the IPOD crustal borehole as a means of investigating layer 2 of oceanic crust. Specific objectives are: to determine the lateral extent of the structure intersected by the borehole, to analyse the role of cracks in the velocity structure of layer 2, to look for anisotropy which may be caused by large cracks with a preferred orientation and, finally, to measure attenuation in oceanic crust.
The first successful Oblique Seismic Experiment in oceanic crust was carried out in 1977 March in a hole 400 miles north of Puerto Rico. An adequate study of lateral velocity variations was impossible because the hole was not deep enough, the hole was inadequately logged, and the small scale basement topography was not known. In general both P - and S -wave velocity profiles suggest that the crack density decreases with depth in layer 2. Velocities at the bottom of layer 2 are the same as matrix velocities for basalt, implying that crack density may be negligible at this depth. No convincing evidence for anisotropy in either layer 2 or 3 is found from travel time analysis. The hole was not deep enough to measure attenuation from normal incidence shots and amplitudes were not consistent enough to obtain a measure of attenuation from long range shots.  相似文献

A theoretical approach to the propagation of interacting cracks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We propose a scheme to compute interaction effects between two randomly oriented cracks under compressive stresses and we discuss the role crack interactions play in the crack coalescence process. Stress intensity factors are computed by using an iterative technique based on the method of successive approximations. Once crack propagation occurs, curved wing cracks grow from the initial crack tips. The stress intensity factors at the wing crack tips are calculated as the sum of two terms: a component for a single wing crack subjected to both the applied stresses and the interaction effect, and a component due to the sliding of the initial crack. We have applied our procedure to various crack geometries. Our results show that interaction effects act on the crack propagation path. For cracks under tension, our approach correctly predicts the curving, hook-shaped paths of interacting cracks that have been observed in various materials. For en echelon compressive cracks, interaction effects depend on the geometry of stepping. For right-stepping cracks, no mode I crack coalescence occurs. A mixedmode propagation criterion may be introduced to check whether coalescing secondary shear fractures initiate. For left-stepping cracks, depending on whether or not there is overlapping, crack coalescence is achieved by tension wing cracks at the inner crack tips. Without overlapping, the growing wing cracks delimit a region where a tensile secondary fracture may develop and lead to coalescence. These results are consistent with previous work and show that our procedure may be now extended to a population of cracks.  相似文献

It is pointed out, in the context of the boundary integral equation method (BIEM), that, in the mechanics of 2-D curved in-plane shear cracks, a smooth curve, along which the crack orientation changes continuously, and an abrupt kink, across which it changes discontinuously, are not equivalent to each other. The discrepancy is illustrated by numerical results, and a set of conceptual models is used to demonstrate analytically how the equations that govern the crack mechanics have inherently distinct forms depending on whether the crack orientation changes continuously or abruptly across a bend, as long as one abides by the principles of linear elasticity theory. This has serious implications for the numerical treatment of a curved crack, which can be modelled as a chain of finite elements that are connected either smoothly or at abrupt kinks, the two methods producing different numerical outcomes. No similar paradox arises in the cases of anti-plane shear or open in-plane cracks.  相似文献

基于山西武乡太行龙洞一支石笋5个230Th年龄和190个氧同位素数据重建4 400~150 a B.P.高分辨率δ18O序列。石笋δ18O值逐渐增加,除最近约600 a外,在千年尺度长期趋势变化上与中国南部其它洞穴记录相一致,表明晚全新世亚洲夏季风强度持续减弱响应于同一驱动机制。一次显著的气候突变事件发生在2 550~2 000 aB.P.,与史料记载的干旱期大致相对应。功率谱分析揭示出106 a周期,与树轮Δ14C太阳活动周期大体一致,说明百年尺度上太阳活动与东亚季风变化有一定关联性。  相似文献

Wave speeds and attenuation of elastic waves in material containing cracks   总被引:38,自引:0,他引:38  
Summary. Expressions now exist from which may be calculated the propagation constants of elastic waves travelling through material containing a distribution of cracks. The cracks are randomly distributed in position and may be randomly orientated. The wavelengths involved are assumed to be large compared with the size of the cracks and with their separation distances so that the formulae, based on the mean taken over a statistical ensemble, may reasonably be used to predict the properties of a single sample. The results are valid only for small concentrations of cracks.
Explicit expressions, correct to lowest order in the ratio of the crack size to a wavelength, are derived here for the overall elastic parameters and the overall wave speeds and attenuation of elastic waves in cracked materials where the mean crack is circular, and the cracks are either aligned or randomly orientated. The cracks may be empty or filled with solid or fluid material. These results are achieved on the basis of simply the static solution for an ellipsoidal inclusion under stress.
The extension to different distributions of orientation or to mixtures of different types of crack is quite straightforward.  相似文献

运用GIS空间分析,研究了秦巴山区1960—2015年地表太阳辐射的时空动态。结果表明:① 秦巴山区地表太阳辐射量年平均值为4 482.77 MJ/m2,呈现由南向东北、西北递增的态势;年际变异系数为8.85%,呈现由西南向东北递减的态势。② 地表太阳辐射量年际变化呈明显下降趋势,年平均递减率为?10.17 MJ/m2,1970—1992年下降尤为明显;空间上呈现西北局部不显著的微增和东部普遍显著性的减少。③ 年内地表太阳辐射量呈单峰型,最大值在7月,最小值在12月,空间上由南向西北、东北递增;7月年递减率为?0.49 MJ/m2,以西南剑阁县、北川县和东南保康县递减明显;12月年递减率为?0.715 MJ/m2,以汉滨区递减最快;④ 结合降水量和≥10℃积温,将秦巴山区分为5个农业气候区。秦巴山区地表太阳辐射量呈“北高南低的纬向变化,高纬东西分异”,年内递减区表现为“夏季纬向变化,冬季涡旋状”的空间差异。因此,区域内部地表太阳辐射量空间差异大,利用光能资源助力农业扶贫,应体现区域差异。  相似文献

Topographic shading curtails the period and complicates the geographic patterns of insolation in mountainous areas. Maps derived from oblique aerial photographs of shadow lines cast by the irregular, mountainous east horizon in Provo, Utah are used as a case study to illustrate an alternative to existing techniques of solar radiation data collection. For study areas of several hundred square kilometers, this method may be superior in resolution and at the same time more error free and economically feasible than other methods. Measurement of solar inputs received at sample stations scattered through the mapped area show that the phenomenon of topographically delayed sunrise has a distinct effect on daily totals of radiation in the manner suggested by the maps.  相似文献

Repeat levelling measurements and detailed topographic profiles from the epicentral area of the 1988 January 22 Tennant Creek, Australia earthquakes are used to constrain the geometry of faulting associated with three M 6+ earthquakes. The observed elevation changes are modelled assuming elastic deformation and uniform slip on several faults. The vertical deformation data are poorly fit by a single-fault model, and require at least three distinct faults. In the preferred model, two faults on either end of the zone of surface rupture have similar orientations, but the central fault has an orientation conjugate to the flanking faults. This interpretation is consistent with the identification of the fault planes with well-defined, dipping zones of aftershock hypocentres determined with data from portable seismograph arrays. It is also consistent with the sense of surficial deformation documented by 75 topographic profiles across the scarps. However, a fourth fault associated with possible conjugate faulting in the central fault segment at the time of the second main shock is not required by the levelling data.  相似文献

Thermomagnetic experiments, isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), hysteresis loops, X-ray reflection analyses, optic microscopic observations, bulk magnetic susceptibility and natural remanent magnetization (NRM) show that the susceptibility signal of 56 sites in the Pont-de-Montvert–Borne pluton is derived mostly from biotite with a very small proportion of ferromagnetic material. Low anisotropy degree ( P parameter) and consistent AMS orientations among monzonite, enclaves and aplitic dykes indicate that the AMS was acquired during pluton emplacement in the subsolidus phase. Magnetic fabrics demonstrate that linear deformation is prominent in the area where the granite is in direct contact with micaschists, and that planar deformation becomes more important in the area where the pluton is surrounded by non-porphyritic peraluminous granites. AMS measurements also show that shallow plunging E–W-stretching lineations are the dominant structure over most of the studied area. Foliation orientations follow the pluton contour in the western part, indicating that the Pont-de-Montvert–Borne pluton is probably rooted in the west and extruded towards the east. These AMS results agree to some extent with fabric inferred from mineral preferred orientation. The AMS data support an E–W extensional tectonic setting during the Pont-de-Montvert–Borne pluton emplacement, which resulted from the Late Carboniferous crustal thinning of the Hercynian orogeny.  相似文献

Abstract Examples of ventifacts and forms of unusual patterned ground that differ in situation, characteristics and/or origin to types reported previously are described from the Falkland Islands, South Atlantic. The ventifacts, represented by clasts projecting from an eroding tillite shore platform, have been grooved by the passage of windblown sand. The patterned ground forms comprise stone polygons on clay loam regolith, stone polygons on peat, peat‐filled desiccation cracks on peat, and clusters of on‐edge clasts (stone packings) on a gravel beach. Aeolian transport of particles is considered responsible for the infill of the polygonal cracks. The clusters of on‐edge clasts are thought to have developed as a result of wave action, in particular backwash and/or undertow. Although these features occupy small surface areas they provide useful information about local geomorphic processes and testify to the marked diversity of such features in nature.  相似文献

Summary. The spatial anisotropy of P -wave velocities was investigated in spherical samples of granodiorite and quartzite and correlated with the orientation of microcracks and grain boundaries, determined optically by universal stage techniques. The preferred orientation of normals to cleavage cracks of biotite and amphibole in granodiorite correlates well with the direction of maximum velocity increase under hydrostatic pressure, although the minerals form only nine per cent of the volume. Irregular microcracks in an almost monomineral quartzite have only a very small effect on the velocity anisotropy, although they are also preferentially oriented. The nature of the microdiscontinuities is of primary importance for the velocity anisotropy observed at atmospheric and low hydrostatic pressures.  相似文献

Late Visean (Asbian–Brigantian) platform carbonates in the British Isles show a pronounced cyclicity marked by the alternation of mainly subtidal carbonates and subaerial exposure surfaces. Whereas the cyclicity of shallow‐water limestones of this age has been well‐documented, there has been little attempt to understand the controls on larger‐scale patterns such as those recognized in Pennsylvanian successions in the U.S.A. The principal aim of this study is to test two contrasting theories of cycle stacking via numerical forward modelling. Earlier studies of Pennsylvanian‐early Permian platform carbonates in south‐west U.S.A. suggest that cycle stacking patterns were controlled by the interaction of third‐ and fourth‐order sea‐level oscillations, with relatively uniform fourth‐order oscillations altered mainly by the harmonic effect of lower‐order sea‐level changes. An alternative model is based on an insolation curve for the Carboniferous calculated using Milankovitch parameters. This model predicts a considerable variability in levels of solar insolation that would have affected the amplitude of fourth‐order sea‐level changes and cycle composition. Both of these ideas were examined via numerous model runs using CARBONATE 6.0 and a new program, CARBOSMUT. Model results were evaluated through the use of 3 key criteria derived from well‐documented outcropping stratigraphies in the U.K.: (1) cycle stacking patterns and the stratigraphic position of major transgressions, (2) stratigraphic position of major faunal changes, (3) degree of development of subaerial exposure surfaces. Computer simulations and comparison with outcrop data suggest that a model invoking the interaction of relatively uniform fourth‐ (c.100 Kyr) and third‐order sea‐level oscillations is most appropriate for much of the late Visean, with major lowstands occurring at the mid‐Asbian and Asbian–Brigantian boundary. Late Visean cycles are important exploration targets in the Pri‐Caspian Basin, Kazakhstan and understanding the controls on stratal patterns is important as a potential exploration tool.  相似文献

Summary. Almost all shear-waves from local earthquakes recorded on closely-spaced three-component seismometer networks deployed near the North Anatolian Fault, Turkey, in two experiments in 1979 and 1980, display shear-wave splitting. The observations are consistent with the presence of EDA (extensive-dilatancy anisotropy), distributions of fluid-filled cracks and microcracks aligned by the regional stress field. Temporal changes in the stress-field, which may occur before an earthquake, may modify the geometry and possibly the orientation of the EDA-microcracks, and lead to corresponding changes in the behaviour of the split shear-waves. A third experiment was undertaken in 1984 to investigate EDA further and to search for possible temporal variations of the polarization of the leading split shear-wave and the time delay between split shear-waves. Observations indicate that the polarization alignments, which are parallel to the strike of the parallel vertical EDA-cracks, are unaltered between 1979 and 1984, implying that the direction of the regional stress field has not changed significantly. Temporal changes in the stress field are more likely to cause changes in the crack density and/or aspect ratio, which would result in a corresponding change in time delay between the split shear-waves. We examine observations of time delay in relation to their propagation path with respect to the crack geometry since it is then possible to separate the effects of changes in crack density and changes in aspect ratio. With this procedure, a small temporal variation of time delays is found between 1979 and 1984, consistent with a decrease in crack density, and consequently a relaxation of stress, in this time period. No evidence was found for any observable variation of time delay over a six month observation span in 1984. We suggest that analysis of repeated shear-wave VSPs offers a technique for monitoring stress changes before earthquakes.  相似文献
