Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, we investigate the statistical characteristics and the long-term variations of major sudden stratospheric warming(SSW) events in the Northern Hemisphere. We find that the strength and duration of major SSW events have increased from 1958 to 2019 because of the strengthening of winter planetary wave activity. The frequency of the SSW events related to displacement or split of the polar vortex differs between early,middle, and late winter. Early(middle) winter is dominated by displacement(split) SSW events, while late winter sees almost equal frequency of these two types of events. This is due to the differences in the relative strength of wavenumber-1 and wavenumber-2 planetary wave activity among the three winter periods. As a result of the increase in upward planetary wave activity and the decrease in westerly winds around the polar vortex in middle winter, more SSW events tend to occur in middle winter. In addition, we reveal the influence of the downward propagation of different types of SSW events on the surface temperature anomaly. Compared with early displacement SSW events, middle split SSW events are followed by more surface cold centers in Russia, northern China, and North America.  相似文献

利用ECMWF提供的60层气象场资料诊断分析了2002/2003和2003/2004年两个冬季的爆发性增温(stratospheric sudden warming,SSW)过程,比较了两次SSW期间高纬温度和纬向风的差异,计算了SSW期间的EP通量和剩余环流.结果表明:2003/2004年增温持续时间长、强度大,而2002/2003年则发生了波动;增温都是从平流层上层开始向下传播,但是2003/2004年高层极涡崩溃后迅速恢复,低层极涡恢复得慢,2002/2003年极涡在高层和低层都是缓慢恢复;SSW期间行星渡活动较多,2003/2004年极地EP通量的辐合引起东风长时间持续从而阻止了行星渡再次上传,而2002/2003年行星波则发生多次上传;2002/2003年SSW发生时高纬地区为下沉气流,没有形成环流圈,增温后形成逆时针的环流圈比2003/2004年偏低.  相似文献

The predictability of the position, spatial coverage and intensity of the East Asian subtropical westerly jet(EASWJ) in the summers of 2010 to 2012 was examined for ensemble prediction systems(EPSs) from four representative TIGGE centers,including the ECMWF, the NCEP, the CMA, and the JMA. Results showed that each EPS predicted all EASWJ properties well, while the levels of skill of all EPSs declined as the lead time extended. Overall, improvements from the control to the ensemble mean forecasts for predicting the EASWJ were apparent. For the deterministic forecasts of all EPSs, the prediction of the average axis was better than the prediction of the spatial coverage and intensity of the EASWJ. ECMWF performed best, with a lead of approximately 0.5–1 day in predictability over the second-best EPS for all EASWJ properties throughout the forecast range. For probabilistic forecasts, differences in skills among the different EPSs were more evident in the earlier part of the forecast for the EASWJ axis and spatial coverage, while they departed obviously throughout the forecast range for the intensity. ECMWF led JMA by about 0.5–1 day for the EASWJ axis, and by about 1–2 days for the spatial coverage and intensity at almost all lead times. The largest lead of ECMWF over the relatively worse EPSs, such as NCEP and CMA, was approximately 3–4 days for all EASWJ properties. In summary, ECMWF showed the highest level of skill for predicting the EASWJ, followed by JMA.  相似文献

In this paper,the dynamical evolutions of two types of Arctic Oscillation (AO),the stratospheric (S) and tropospheric (T) types,have been investigated on an intermediate time scale in terms of transient eddy feedback forcing and three-dimensional Rossby wave propagation.S-Type (T-type) events are characterized by an anomalous stratospheric polar vortex that is in phase (out of phase) with its tropospheric counterpart.Approximately onethird of AO events,both positive and negative,are T-type events.For the positive phase of a T-type event,the formation and maintenance of stratospheric positive anomalies over the polar cap are associated with an upward propagation of Rossby wave packets originating from the near-tropopause altitude over northeastern Asia.However,such upward propagating features are not found for S-type events.In the troposphere,transient eddy feedback forcing is primarily responsible for the meridional seesaw structure of both the S-and T-type events,with an additional contribution from Rossby wave propagation.  相似文献

This study presented an evaluation of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity forecasts from five global ensemble prediction systems (EPSs) during 2015-2019 in the western North Pacific region. Notable error features include the underestimation of the TC intensity by ensemble mean forecast and the under-dispersion of the probability forecasts.The root mean square errors (brier scores) of the ensemble mean (probability forecasts) generally decrease consecutively at long lead times during the five years, but fluctuate between certain values at short lead times.Positive forecast skill appeared in the most recent two years (2018-2019) at 120 h or later as compared with the climatology forecasts. However, there is no obvious improvement for the intensity change forecasts during the 5-yearperiod, with abrupt intensity change remaining a big challenge. The probability forecasts show no skill for strongTCs at all the lead times. Among the five EPSs, ECMWF-EPS ranks the best for the intensity forecast, while NCEP-GEFS ranks the best for the intensity change forecast, according to the evaluation for ensemble mean and dispersion. As for the other probability forecast evaluation, ECMWF-EPS ranks the best at lead times shorter than 72 h, while NCEP-GEFS ranks the best later on.  相似文献

使用国家气候中心大气环流模式BCC_AGCM2.1的30年模拟试验资料,对平流层纬向环流场、高空急流、极涡及爆发性增温过程进行了数值模拟研究,并使用欧洲中期天气预报中心(ECMWF)和美国国家环境预报中心(NCEP)的再分析资料对模式输出结果进行了对比、分析。结果表明:(1) 在观测海温、二氧化碳、气溶胶等外强迫地驱动下,BCC模式能够很好地再现出与再分析资料一致的平流层纬向平均风场、温度场的分布特征和季节变化过程;模拟得到的温度廓线和高空急流与再分析资料的主要差别出现在南、北半球冬季的中高纬度地区;模拟得到的平流层温度普遍偏低,主要的差异位于对流层顶区域和平流层高层。(2) 模拟的对流层上层的副热带急流位置偏南、强度也偏弱,而平流层中的绕极极夜急流则位置偏北、强度更大。这样的急流分布特征使模拟的行星波向赤道的波导更强,向极的波导偏弱;同时由于模式中本身可以形成的行星波就比再分析资料弱,因此导致模拟结果中北半球冬季的平流层极涡更加稳定、极区温度更低。(3) BCC模式对于平流层极涡的季节变化特征模拟得较好,但对强极涡扰动过程,即北半球冬季的平流层爆发性增温(SSW)事件则模拟效果不佳,不论是增温事件出现的频率,还是增温的时间、强度,模拟结果和再分析资料都还存在一定偏差,需要在今后的工作中逐步改善。  相似文献

A meteorological reanalysis dataset and experiments of the Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry-Climate Model, Version 2 (GEOS V2 CCM) are used to study the boreal winter season teleconnections in the Pacific-North America region and in the stratosphere generated by Central Pacific and Eastern Pacific El Niño. In the reanalysis data, the sign of the North Pacific and stratospheric response to Central Pacific El Niño is sensitive to the composite size, the specific Central Pacific El Niño index used, and the month or seasonal average that is examined, highlighting the limitations of the short observational record. Long model integrations suggest that the response to the two types of El Niño are similar in both the extratropical troposphere and stratosphere. Namely, both Central Pacific and Eastern Pacific El Niño lead to a deepened North Pacific low and a weakened polar vortex, and the effects are stronger in late winter than in early winter. However, the long experiments do indicate some differences between the two types of El Niño events regarding the latitude of the North Pacific trough, the early winter polar stratospheric response, surface temperature and precipitation over North America, and globally averaged surface temperature. These differences are generally consistent with, though smaller than, those noted in previous studies.  相似文献

Summary The authors perform an exploratory analysis on the effect of the timing of the stratospheric vortex breakup in the occurrence of cut-off low systems (COLs) in the Northern Hemisphere. The first multidecadal Northern Hemisphere COLs database (Nieto et al, 2005) covering a 41 year-long period (1958–1998) was used in the analysis. The dates of stratospheric vortex breakup were obtained using two different approaches recently purposed in literature based in potential vorticity and zonal winds. An analysis of differences of COLs occurrences for the five earlier (later) breakup years showed that, at latitudes lower than 45° N, COLs are more frequent for earlier vortex years during the following spring and summer. The monthly analysis showed that, in general, the significant differences start in May lasting until September, being especially relevant for the European sector, the area with the highest rates of COLs occurrence in the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

利用CRA空间检验技术对ECMWF模式36 h时效预报的2016—2018年华南前汛期(4—6月)69个降水目标进行了检验及误差统计分析,并将预报落区偏差相似个例的环流形势及天气尺度影响系统进行了分析。(1) 87% 的强降水目标存在明显落区预报偏差,最大偏差为2.75 °。偏差以经向偏差为主,其中偏北的目标多于偏南的目标,平均偏北0.6 °;无系统性纬向偏差。(2) 模式预报的降水面积较实况偏大的个例多。(3) 不同降水落区预报偏差类型月份分布、对应的环流特征与天气尺度影响系统具有一定的差异性。4月各偏差类型出现的频次相当,5月以西北型个例为主,6月东北型个例最多。西北型个例天气尺度影响系统以长波槽或东北冷涡、冷式切变线为主,西南型、东北型个例主要受南支波动与中纬度短波槽影响,低层低涡、冷、暖式切变线等出现的频次差不多。通过降水预报落区偏差较大和较小的个例对比分析,表明模式强降水落区预报偏差可能与对流组织化发展程度以及暖区是否存在有利于对流发展条件等有关。   相似文献

The present work extensively describes the tropical dynamical changes during the Vortex split Major Stratospheric Warming (V-MSW) event occurred in recent decades. For better visualization of high latitude influence of tropical atmosphere, in this study, we have utilized three successive major vortex split warming events occurred in winters 1984/85, 1988/89 and 2008/09. The realistic visualization of planetary wave activity and its tropical response can be achieved by using Eliassen –Palm flux as a diagnostic tool. The investigation reveals that the tropical weather shows significant changes in temperature, convection and wind circulation during the course of vortex split major stratospheric warming.  相似文献

在对逐日气象资料进行纬向谐波分析的基础上, 对比和讨论了2007/2008年冬季强极涡期间和2008/2009冬季弱极涡期间平流层和对流层不同波数的行星波的变化特征, 特别关注强极涡或弱极涡发生之后, 500 hPa 沿60°N和30°N行星波1波和2波振幅和位相的差异, 以及相应的500 hPa位势场的差异, 进而讨论为什么不同的平流层极涡异常会对东亚有不同的影响, 特别讨论为什么同一种极涡异常, 对我国南北方近地面气温的影响会不同。结果表明:平流层极涡发生异常时, 平流层行星波活动有明显的异常。随着极涡异常的下传, 对流层行星波的振幅和位相也有明显的变化, 而且, 对于不同的纬度带, 其变化又有不同, 表现为:2008年1月强极涡发生之后, 500 hPa行星波1波和2波的扰动都向南伸, 而2009年1月的弱极涡(SSW)期间和之后, 1波和2波的扰动都偏北; 在对流层, 强极涡和弱极涡发生之后不但行星波1波和2波的振幅有所差异, 其位相也有明显的不同。特别是, 其位相的差异还随纬度而变化。就同一年(或者说对于同是强极涡或者同是弱极涡)而言, 无论是1波还是2波, 在60°N和30°N附近的扰动相比, 几乎反位相。这样就使得它们的500 hPa 位势场也有明显不同:在东半球, 主要表现为乌拉尔高压和东亚大槽的强度和位置不同。2008年1月强极涡发生之后, 乌拉尔高压和东亚大槽东移, 不利于冷空气向欧亚大陆北部(包括我国北方)的输送, 使这些地区的温度偏高;而2009年1月弱极涡之后, 东亚大槽西退, 利于冷空气向欧亚大陆北部输送, 导致这些地区较冷。对于同一种极涡异常(如2008强极涡或者2009弱极涡)由于南方和北方行星波扰动的位相不同, 对南方和北方冷暖空气的输送也就不一样。所以同一种极涡异常对(我国)南北地区的温度影响是不同的。  相似文献

国家气象中心台风路径数值预报模式自1996年6月投入业务运行以来, 一直在背景场中采用经验平滑滤波技术消除浅台风和嵌入轴对称的台风bogus涡旋技术。但事实上, 在采用经验平滑技术消除背景场中弱的位置不准确的浅台风涡旋同时, 也滤除了台风中心周围一些宝贵的非对称气流结构, 同时, 由于实际的台风涡旋结构是非对称的, 因而对采用轴对称涡旋的模式初始场而言, 或多或少的贡献了一些模式预报结果的路径误差。为了调查这部分非对称结构对台风预报路径误差的影响, 从T213L31全球谱模式提供的背景场中抽取浅台风周围的非对称流场, 将之加入到轴对称的台风bogus涡旋中。初步的个例试验发现, 加入非对称流场后, 能有效地减少台风路径预报误差。  相似文献

采用NCEP/NCAR逐日再分析资料,通过对北半球环状模指数的分析,将平流层异常分为两类:S型和D型,研究了两类平流层异常过程的差异及其与对流层的关系.结果表明,两种类型的异常特征在平流层类似,而主要的差别发生在对流层.在S型平流层异常期间,平流层纬向风异常有随时间向下传播的趋势,对流层表现为与平流层一致连续的纬向风异常;位势高度和温度距平场的分布中,最显著的特征是对流层与平流层呈相当正压结构,极区和中纬度异常表现为反位相的振荡,呈现典型的北极涛动特征.在D型平流层异常期间,平流层纬向风异常随时间向下传播的趋势不存在,另外平流层纬向风异常仅局限在平流层范围内,对流层表现为与平流层相反的纬向风异常;位势高度和温度距平场的分布中,平流层中低层与高层呈现反位相的距平分布,在对流层中低层,温度和位势高度的距平场呈现无规则的分布.  相似文献

基于WRF模式对2011年6月16—19日一次东移西南涡过程的模拟,开展了西南涡激发平流层重力波的特征研究。东移西南涡可以分为发展、强盛和减弱3个阶段,每个阶段均伴随着强降雨天气,但由于降水位置和强度的不同,平流层重力波的分布和强度也不同。西南涡发展阶段,平流层重力波主要位于低涡的东侧,并向东北传播;西南涡强盛阶段,伴随对流降水的强度和范围明显增大,平流层重力波的振幅和范围也显著增大,且围绕西南涡的东侧和南侧呈现出半环状的重力波分布特征可分为两支,东侧波动波列表现为东北西南向分布,南侧的波列表现为东—西向分布;西南涡减弱阶段,重力波的振幅和范围均减小。波谱分析表明,重力波的纬向波数频率谱关于零频率呈非对称分布,且随着西南涡的增强,波谱在小尺度范围显著增大,即强对流更容易激发出小尺度的高频波;经向波数频率谱在波数较小谱段关于零频率基本呈对称分布,但在波数较大谱段,也呈非对称分布,这说明受平流层东风气流的影响,重力波主要向东传播。  相似文献

The quality of Arctic winter stratospheric dynamics forecast using the SL-AV atmospheric global circulation model is studied. The series of numerical experiments show that forecasts with the lead time up to 7 days are successful. Zonal wind reversal during minor sudden stratospheric warmings is predicted 10–11 days ahead. Overall, the situations of strong polar jet disturbances are beneficial for the forecast accuracy.  相似文献

Using the World Meteorological Organization definition and a threshold-based classification technique,simulations of vortex displacement and split sudden stratospheric warmings(SSWs)are evaluated for four Chinese models(BCC-CSM2-MR,FGOALS-f3-L,FGOALS-g3,and NESM3)from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP6)with the Japanese 55-year reanalysis(JRA-55)as a baseline.Compared with six or seven SSWs in a decade in JRA-55,three models underestimate the SSW frequency by~50%,while NESM3 doubles the SSW frequency.SSWs mainly appear in midwinter in JRA-55,but one-month climate drift is simulated in the models.The composite of splits is stronger than displacements in both the reanalysis and most models due to the longer pulse of positive eddy heat flux before onset of split SSWs.A wavenumber-1-like temperature anomaly pattern(cold Eurasia,warm North America)before onset of displacement SSWs is simulated,but cold anomalies are mainly confined to North America after displacement SSWs.Although the lower tropospheric temperature also displays a wavenumber-1-like pattern before split SSWs,most parts of Eurasia and North America are covered by cold anomalies after split SSWs in JRA-55.The models have different degrees of fidelity for the temperature anomaly pattern before split SSWs,but the wavenumber-2-like temperature anomaly pattern is well simulated after split SSWs.The center of the negative height anomalies in the Pacific sector before SSWs is sensitive to the SSW type in both JRA-55 and the models.A negative North Atlantic Oscillation is simulated after both types of SSWs in the models,although it is only observed for split SSWs.  相似文献

利用1980~2017年厦门逐小时降水资料和NCEP再分析资料,分析厦门地区极端降水事件的气候特征,并初步讨论其成因。研究结果表明:1)极端降水事件的年发生频率呈现减少的趋势,厦门岛的减少趋势要比内陆更为显著。2)小时尺度的极端降水事件在较小尺度空间内无论是发生频率还是强度都存在明显的区域性差异,内陆地区在发生频率和强度上均高于厦门岛,但强度的平均值一致。3)造成极端降水事件的天气系统有4类,分别是热带气旋型、冷式切变型、西南风气流型和低槽冷锋型。随着城市抗灾能力的提升,对极端降水预报的要求也不断提高,基于小时值的结论可以为未来厦门地区极端降水事件的预报提供参考基础,进而提升预报的有效性和针对性。  相似文献

Ozone vertical column densities (VCDs) were retrieved by Zenith Scattered Light-Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (ZSL-DOAS) from January 2017 to February 2020 over Fildes Peninsula, West Antarctica (62.22°S, 58.96°W). Each year, ozone VCDs started to decline around July with a comparable gradient around 1.4 Dobson Units (DU) per day, then dropped to their lowest levels in September and October, when ozone holes appeared (less than 220 DU). Daily mean values of retrieved ozone VCDs were compared with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME-2) satellite observations and the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis dataset, with correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.86, 0.94, and 0.90, respectively. To better understand the causes of ozone depletion, the retrieved ozone VCDs, temperature, and potential vorticity (PV) at certain altitudes were analyzed. The profiles of ozone and PV were positively correlated during their fluctuations, which indicates that the polar vortex has a strong influence on stratospheric ozone depletion during Antarctic spring. Located at the edge of polar vortex, the observed data will provide a basis for further analysis and prediction of the inter-annual variations of stratospheric ozone in the future.  相似文献
