On the basis of the equivalent circuit model, we investigate two different mechanisms of extracting energy of rotation and angular momentum from a black hole by magnetic field, namely, the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process and the magnetic coupling (MC) process. The contributions to the efficiency of energy release via pure accretion process, BZ process and MC process are compared in detail by studying the evolutionary characteristics of the spin parameter of the black hole at the center of the magnetized accretion disk. It is shown that the MC process is an important new mechanism of extracting energy from the rotating black hole and its efficiency of energy release is almost as high as that of the BZ process. The efficiency of energy release via pure accretion process is higher than those of BZ process and magnetic coupling process. However, when the rotation of a black hole approaches that of an extreme Kerr black hole, the efficiency of energy release is mainly due to the contributions of BZ process and MC process.

A toy model for magnetic extraction of energy from black hole (BH) accretion disk is discussed by considering the restriction of the screw instability to the magnetic field configuration. Three mechanisms of extracting energy magnetically are involved. (1) The Blandford–Znajek (BZ) process is related to the open magnetic field lines connecting the BH with the astrophysical load; (2) the magnetic coupling (MC) process is related to the closed magnetic field lines connecting the BH with its surrounding disk; and (3) a new scenario (henceforth the DL process) for extracting rotational energy from the disk is related to the open field lines connecting the disk with the astrophysical load. The expressions for the electromagnetic powers and torques are derived by using the equivalent circuits corresponding to the above energy mechanisms. It turns out that the DL power is comparable with the BZ and MC powers as the BH spin approaches unity. The radiation from a quasi-steady thin disk is discussed in detail by applying the conservation laws of mass, energy and angular momentum to the regions corresponding to the MC and DL processes. In addition, the poloidal currents and the current densities in BH magnetosphere are calculated by using the equivalent circuits.

We propose a three-stage model with Blandford-Znajek (BZ) and hyperaccretion process to interpret the recent observations of early afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). In the first stage, the prompt GRB is powered by a rotating black hole (BH) invoking the BZ process. The second stage is a quiet stage, in which the BZ process is shut off, and the accretion onto the BH is depressed by the torque exerted by the magnetic coupling (MC) process. Part of the rotational energy transported by the MC process from the BH is stored in the disk as magnetic energy. In the third stage, the MC process is shut off when the magnetic energy in the disk accumulates and triggers magnetic instability. At this moment, the hyperaccretion process may set in, and the jet launched in this restarted central engine generates the observed X-ray flares. This model can account for the energies and timescales of GRBs with X-ray flares observed in early afterglows.

The power of jets from black holes is expected to depend on both the spin of the black hole and the structure of the accretion disc in the region of the last stable orbit. We investigate these dependencies using two different physical models for the jet power: the classical Blandford–Znajek (BZ) model and a hybrid model developed by Meier. In the BZ case, the jets are powered by magnetic fields directly threading the spinning black hole while in the hybrid model, the jet energy is extracted from both the accretion disc as well as the black hole via magnetic fields anchored to the accretion flow inside and outside the hole's ergosphere. The hybrid model takes advantage of the strengths of both the Blandford–Payne and BZ mechanisms, while avoiding the more controversial features of the latter. We develop these models more fully to account for general relativistic effects and to focus on advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) for which the jet power is expected to be a significant fraction of the accreted rest mass energy.
We apply the models to elliptical galaxies, in order to see if these models can explain the observed correlation between the Bondi accretion rates and the total jet powers. For typical values of the disc viscosity parameter  α∼ 0.04 –0.3  and mass accretion rates consistent with ADAF model expectations, we find that the observed correlation requires   j ≳ 0.9  ; that is, it implies that the black holes are rapidly spinning. Our results suggest that the central black holes in the cores of clusters of galaxies must be rapidly rotating in order to drive jets powerful enough to heat the intracluster medium and quench cooling flows.

The transfer of energy and angular momentum in the magnetic coupling (MC) of a rotating black hole (BH) with its surrounding accretion disc is discussed based on a mapping relation derived by considering the conservation of magnetic flux with two basic assumptions: (i) the magnetic field on the horizon is constant, (ii) the magnetic field on the disc surface varies as a power law with the radial coordinate of the disc. The following results are obtained: (i) the transfer direction of energy and angular momentum between the BH and the disc depends on the position of a co-rotation radius relative to the MC region on the disc, which is eventually determined by the BH spin; (ii) the evolution characteristics of a rotating BH in the MC process without disc accretion are depicted in a parameter space, and a series of values of the BH spin are given to indicate the evolution characteristics; (iii) the efficiency of converting accreted mass into radiation energy of a BH–disc system is discussed by considering the coexistence of disc accretion and the MC process; (iv) the MC effects on disc radiation and the emissivity index are discussed and it is concluded that they are consistent with the recent XMM–Newton observation of the nearby bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG–6-30-15 with reference to a variety of parameters of the BH–disc system.

We present a general relativistic accretion disc model and its application to the soft-state X-ray spectra of black hole binaries. The model assumes a flat, optically thick disc around a rotating Kerr black hole. The disc locally radiates away the dissipated energy as a blackbody. Special and general relativistic effects influencing photons emitted by the disc are taken into account. The emerging spectrum, as seen by a distant observer, is parametrized by the black hole mass and spin, the accretion rate, the disc inclination angle and the inner disc radius.
We fit the ASCA soft-state X-ray spectra of LMC X-1 and GRO J1655-40 by this model. We find that, having additional limits on the black hole mass and inclination angle from optical/UV observations, we can constrain the black hole spin from X-ray data. In LMC X-1 the constraint is weak, and we can only rule out the maximally rotating black hole. In GRO J1655-40 we can limit the spin much better, and we find 0.68 a 0.88 . Accretion discs in both sources are radiation-pressure dominated. We do not find Compton reflection features in the spectra of any of these objects.

We study the radiation properties of an accretion disc around a rotating black hole. We solve the hydrodynamic equations and calculate the transonic solutions of accretion disc in the presence of shocks. Then we use these solutions to generate the radiation spectrum in the presence of radiative heating and cooling processes. We present the effect of spin parameter of the black hole on the emitted radiation spectrum. In addition, attention has also been paid to the variation in energy spectral index with Kerr parameter and accretion rate. We find that spectral index becomes harder as the spin parameter changes from negative (accretion disc is counter-rotating with respect to the black hole spin) to a positive value. Finally, we compute and compare the spectral characteristics due to a free-fall flow and a transonic flow. We notice significant differences in high energy contributions from these two solutions.

We study the dynamical structure of a cooling dominated rotating accretion flow around a spinning black hole. We show that non-linear phenomena such as shock waves can be studied in terms of only three flow parameters, namely the specific energy     , the specific angular momentum (λ) and the accretion rate     of the flow. We present all possible accretion solutions. We find that a significant region of the parameter space in the     plane allows global accretion shock solutions. The effective area of the parameter space for which the Rankine–Hugoniot shocks are possible is maximum when the flow is dissipation-free. It decreases with the increase of cooling effects and finally disappears when the cooling is high enough. We show that shock forms further away when the black hole is rotating compared to the solution around a Schwarzschild black hole with identical flow parameters at a large distance. However, in a normalized sense, the flow parameters for which the shocks form around the rotating black holes are produced shocks closer to the black hole. The location of the shock is also dictated by the cooling efficiency in that higher the accretion rate     , the closer is the shock location. We believe that some of the high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations may be due to the flows with higher accretion rate around the rotating black holes.

We examine the behaviour of accretion flow around a rotating black hole in presence of cooling. We obtain global flow solutions for various accretion parameters that govern the accreting flow. We show that standing isothermal shock wave may develop in such an advective accretion flow in presence of cooling. This shocked solution has observational consequences as it successfully provides the possible explanations of energy spectra as well as generation of outflows/jets of various galactic and extra-galactic black hole candidates. We study the properties of isothermal shock wave and find that it strongly depends on the cooling efficiency. We identify the region in the parameter space spanned by the specific energy and specific angular momentum of the flow for standing isothermal shock as a function of cooling efficiencies and find that parameter space gradually shrinks with the increase of cooling rates. Our results imply that accretion flow ceases to contain isothermal shocks when cooling is beyond its critical value.

The effects of the Blandford–Znajek (BZ) process on the evolution of the central black holes of accretion discs are investigated by an analytical method and numerical calculations in this paper. It is shown that the BZ process reduces the rates of change of some parameters of the black hole, such as mass, angular momentum, dimensionless angular momentum and temperature, and the evolution of the central black hole towards the extreme Kerr black hole is depressed effectively. However, the rate of change of entropy of the central black hole is augmented in the BZ process. In addition, the consistency of the BZ process with the three laws of black hole thermodynamics is discussed.
