We have detected giant pulses from the millisecond pulsar PSR B1937+214 at the lowest frequency of 112 MHz. The observed flux density at the pulse peak is ~40 000 Jy, which exceeds the average level by a factor of 600. Pulses of such intensity occur about once per 300 000 periods. The brightness temperature of the observed giant pulses is T B≈1035 K. We estimated the pulse broadening by interstellar scattering to be τsc=3–10 ms. Based on this estimate and on published high-frequency measurements of this parameter, we determined the frequency dependence of the pulse broadening by scattering: τsc(f)=25 × (f/100)?4.0±02.  相似文献

We measured the frequency dependence of the pulsar pulse broadening by scattering over a wide frequency range, from 40 to 2228 MHz, based on direct measurements of this parameter using giant pulses from the pulsar PSR B0531+21 in the Crab Nebula. Our measurements were carried out at the following seven frequencies: 40, 60, and 111 MHz at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Astrospace Center, Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences), 406 MHz at the Medicina Observatory (Instituto di Radioastronomia, Italy), and 594, 1430, and 2228 MHz at the Kalyazin Radio Astronomy Observatory (Astrospace Center, Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences). The measured frequency dependence of the pulse broadening by scattering τSC (υ) ? υγ, where γ=?3.8±0.2, agrees with a model Gaussian distribution of interstellar inhomogeneities (γ=?4) but falls outside the error limits of correspondence to a Kolmogorov model spectrum of inhomogeneities (γ=?4.4).  相似文献

We make a statistical analysis of the periodsP and period-derivativesP of pulsars using a model independent theory of pulsar flow in theP-P diagram. Using the available sample ofP andP values, we estimate the current of pulsars flowing unidirectionally along theP-axis, which is related to the pulsar birthrate. Because of radio luminosity selection effects, the observed pulsar sample is biased towards lowP and highP. We allow for this by weighting each pulsar by a suitable scale factor. We obtain the number of pulsars in our galaxy to be 6.05−2.80 +3.32 × 105 and the birthrate to be 0.048−0.011 +0.014 pulsars yr−1 galaxy−1. The quoted errors refer to 95 per cent confidence limits corresponding to fluctuations arising from sampling, but make no allowance for other systematic and random errors which could be substantial. The birthrate estimated here is consistent with the supernova rate. We further conclude that a large majority of pulsars make their first appearance at periods greater than 0.5 s. This ‘injection’, which runs counter to present thinking, is probably connected with the physics of pulsar radio emission. Using a variant of our theory, where we compute the current as a function of pulsar ‘age’ (1/2P/P), we find support for the dipole braking model of pulsar evolution upto 6 × 106 yr of age. We estimate the mean pulsar braking index to be 3.7−0.8 +0.8.  相似文献

Chaos appears in various problems of Relativity and Cosmology. Here we discuss (a) the Mixmaster Universe model, and (b) the motions around two fixed black holes. (a) The Mixmaster equations have a general solution (i.e. a solution depending on 6 arbitrary constants) of Painlevé type, but there is a second general solution which is not Painlevé. Thus the system does not pass the Painlevé test, and cannot be integrable. The Mixmaster model is not ergodic and does not have any periodic orbits. This is due to the fact that the sum of the three variables of the system (α + β + γ) has only one maximum for τ = τm and decreases continuously for larger and for smaller τ. The various Kasner periods increase exponentially for large τ. Thus the Lyapunov Characteristic Number (LCN) is zero. The "finite time LCN" is positive for finite τ and tends to zero when τ → ∞. Chaos is introduced mainly near the maximum of (α + β + γ). No appreciable chaos is introduced at the successive Kasner periods, or eras. We conclude that in the Belinskii-Khalatnikov time, τ, the Mixmaster model has the basic characteristics of a chaotic scattering problem. (b) In the case of two fixed black holes M1 and M2 the orbits of photons are separated into three types: orbits falling into M1 (type I), or M2 (type II), or escaping to infinity (type III). Chaos appears because between any two orbits of different types there are orbits of the third type. This is a typical chaotic scattering problem. The various types of orbits are separated by orbits asymptotic to 3 simple unstable orbits. In the case of particles of nonzero rest mass we have intervals where some periodic orbits are stable. Near such orbits we have order. The transition from order to chaos is made through an infinite sequence of period doubling bifurcations. The bifurcation ratio is the same as in classical conservative systems. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

From 2000 to 2010, monitoring of radio emission from the Crab pulsar at Xinjiang Observatory detected a total of nine glitches. The occurrence of glitches appears to be a random process as described by previous researches. A persistent change in pulse frequency and pulse frequency derivative after each glitch was found. There is no obvious correlation between glitch sizes and the time since last glitch. For these glitches Δν p and D[(n)\dot]p\Delta\dot{\nu}_{p} span two orders of magnitude. The pulsar suffered the largest frequency jump ever seen on MJD 53067.1. The size of the glitch is ∼6.8×10−6 Hz, ∼3.5 times that of the glitch occurred in 1989 glitch, with a very large permanent changes in frequency and pulse frequency derivative and followed by a decay with time constant ∼21 days. The braking index presents significant changes. We attribute this variation to a varying particle wind strength which may be caused by glitch activities. We discuss the properties of detected glitches in Crab pulsar and compare them with glitches in the Vela pulsar.  相似文献

Space Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of PSR 0329+54 which, by luck, occurred during an interstellar fringing event, are presented. Separate images of the pulsar were not detected. However, the pulsar was observed to be extended. The size of PSR 0329+54 during this event is1.88 × 1.67 mas with a position angle of 30° East of North. This could be due to two separate images of the pulsar separated byΔ θ ≲ 0.5 mas or angular broadening. The observed image size is larger than the expected angular broadening size of < 0.1 mas from the observations of Britton, Gwinn and Ojeda (1998). In this work we propose cyclical reversible transitions as the scenario in which the universe evolves, through a series consisting of reversible expansion, temporary stability, and contraction. Our model is based on the comparison between local and global time-dependent densities {ρ 0(τ 0),ρ(τ)} instead of the critical density ρ c, local and global time-dependent Hubble parameters {H 0(τ 0),H(τ)}, and the variations {Δρ(τ),ΔH(τ)} due to cosmological chaotic fluctuations, which are generally ignored in certain oscillating models. By taking into account all these factors, a rate equation in the form of (H 0/H)2 (ρ 0/ρ) has been established, and from it we derive some others, to provide a mechanism that is responsible for the cyclical reversible transitions. Also, the problems of singularities, black hole overproduction, and the second law of thermodynamics arising in oscillating universe models are conceptually resolved.  相似文献

We develop a numerical code for simulating the magnetospheres of millisecond pulsars, which are expected to have unscreened electric potentials due to the lack of magnetic pair production. We incorporate General Relativistic (GR) expressions for the electric field and charge density and include curvature radiation (CR) due to primary electrons accelerated above the stellar surface, whereas inverse Compton scattering (ICS) of thermal X-ray photons by these electrons are neglected as a second-order effect. We apply the model to PSR J0437-4715, a prime candidate for testing the GR-Electrodynamic theory, and find that the curvature radiation spectrum cuts off at energies below 15 GeV, which are well below the threshold of the H.E.S.S. telescope, whereas Classical Electrodynamics predict a much higher cutoff near 100 GeV, which should be visible for H.E.S.S., if standard assumed Classical Electrodynamics apply. GR theory also predicts a relatively narrow pulse (2φ L ∼ 0.2 phase width) centered on the magnetic axis, which sets the beaming solid angle to ∼0.5 sr per polar cap (PC) for a magnetic inclination angle of 35 relative to the spin axis, given an observer which sweeps close to the magnetic axis. We also find that EGRET observations above 100 MeV of this pulsar constrain the polar magnetic field strength to B pc < 4× 108 G for a pulsar radius of 10 km and moment of inertia of 1045 g cm2. The field strength constraint becomes even tighter for a larger radius and moment of inertia. Furthermore, a reanalysis of the full EGRET data set of this pulsar, assuming the predicted pulse shape and position, should lead to even tighter constraints on neutron star and GR parameters, up to the point where the GR-derived potential and polar cap current may be questioned.  相似文献

We present the results of our simultaneous observations of giant pulses from the Crab pulsar B0531+21 at frequencies of 594 and 2228 MHz with a high (62.5 ns) time resolution. The pulse broadening by scattering was found to be 25 and 0.4 µs at 594 and 2228 MHz, respectively. We obtained the original giant-pulse profiles compensated for interstellar scattering. The measured profile widths at the two frequencies are approximately equal, ≈0.5 µs; i.e., the giant pulses are narrower than the integrated profile by a factor of about 1000. We detected an extremely high brightness temperature of radio emission, Tb≥1036 K radio emission, which is higher than the previous estimates of this parameter by five orders of magnitude. The decorrelation bandwidth of the radio-spectrum diffraction distortions has been determined for this pulsar for the first time: 10 kHz at 594 MHz and 300 kHz at 2228 MHz.  相似文献

The algorithm for determining effective optical thickness of absorption line formation in a plane-parallel homogeneous planetary atmosphere is presented. The case of anisotropic scattering is considered. The results of numerical calculations of τ e 0) at the scattering angle γ = π for some values of the single scattering albedo λ and the parameter of the Heyney-Greenstein scattering indicatrix g are given. The refined equation for the function T m (−μ, μ0) is presented.  相似文献

New methods are proposed for finding the Ambartsumyan functions φ(η) for a half space and φ(η, τ) and ψ(η, τ) for finite layers, as well as their analogs with complete frequency redistribution, X (z, τ) and Y (z, τ). Substantial simplifications are obtained for monochromatic conservative scattering. Besides the Ambartsumyan functions, expressions for several of their angular moments are obtained directly in terms of the basis functions u ±. A system of differential equations is obtained for the basis functions. A system of equations without the characteristic pseudosingularities is obtained for φ(η, τ) and ψ(η, τ) instead of the classical system of nonlinear equations. Some aspects of the numerical realization of the proposed method are also discussed.  相似文献

Magnetic photon splitting γ → γγ, a quantum electrodynamic process that becomes important when magnetic field approaching the quantum critical value, B c = 4.413 × 1013 G, may have important effects on pulsar radio emission. According to the standard model, the pulsar radio emission is produced by coherent curvature radiation of a large amounts of e ± pairs, which are thought to be generated by the pair creation process γ + Be ±. However, if the magnetic field is strong enough, the photon splitting may dominate the pair creation process, then the amounts of e ± pairs and the radio luminosity will be strongly suppressed and may be undetectable. Here we use the fitted analytical formula of the photon splitting attenuation coefficient to study the above process, and find that the photon splitting will strongly decrease the radio emission when B > 1013 G. We also note that the photon splitting can strongly but not totally suppress the creation of pairs due to the diminishing dependence of B in the attenuation coefficient. We find that the ratio of the probability of a photon being absorbed by photon splitting to that by pair creation is no more than about six. The inertial range of incompressible MHD turbulence is most conveniently described in terms of counter propagating waves. Shear Alfvén waves control the cascade dynamics. Slow waves play a passive role and adopt the spectrum set by the shear Alfvén waves. Cascades composed entirely of shear Alfvén waves do not generate a significant measure of slow waves. MHD turbulence is anisotropic with energy cascading more rapidly along k than along k . Anisotropy increases with k such that the excited modes are confined inside a cone bounded by k k perp 2/3. The opening angle of the cone, θ(k )∝ k -1/3, defines the scale dependent anisotropy. MHD turbulence is generically strong in the sense that the waves which comprise it are critically damped. Nevertheless, deep inside the inertial range, turbulent fluctuations are small. Their energy density is less than that of the background field by a factor θ2(k )≪. MHD cascades are best understood geometrically. Wave packets suffer distortions as they move along magnetic field lines perturbed by counter propagating wave packets. Field lines perturbed by unidirectional waves map planes perpendicular to the local field into each other. Shear Alfvén waves are responsible for the mapping's shear and slow waves for its dilatation. The former exceeds the latter by θ-1(k )≫ 1 which accounts for dominance of the shear Alfvén waves in controlling the cascade dynamics. This paper examines the effect of HD molecules on the thermochemical evolution of the primordial gas behind the fronts of shock waves that may develop during the epoch of galaxy formation. A critical shock velocity is found at which deuterium efficiently converts to HD molecules and the contribution of HD molecules to cooling is dominant. Above this value of the shock velocity the gas can cool to temperatures close to that of the cosmic background radiation. In this case the Jeans mass will depend only on the red shift and the initial density, with MJ ∝ δ c −0.5 (1 + z)0.5. For z≳45, HD molecules heat the gas and for large red shifts they generally cease to play a significant role in the thermal evolution of the gas. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 4, pp. 585–601 (November 2005).  相似文献

Arrival-time analysis for a millisecond pulsar   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Arrival times from a fast, quiet pulsar can be used to obtain accurate determinations of pulsar parameters. In the case of the millisecond pulsar, PSR 1937 + 214, the remarkably small rms residual to the timing fit indicates that precise measurements of position, proper motion and perhaps even trigonometric parallax will be possible (Backer 1984). The variances in these parameters, however, will depend strongly on the nature of the underlying noise spectrum. We demonstrate that for very red spectrai.e. those dominated by low-frequency noise, the uncertainties can be larger than the present estimates (based on a white-noise model) and can even grow with the observation period. The possibility of improved parameter estimation through prewhitening’ the data and the application of these results to other pulsar observations are briefly discussed. The post-fit rms residual of PSR 1937 + 214 may be used to limit the energy density of a gravitational radiation background at periods of a few months to years. However, fitting the pulsar position and pulse-emission times filters out significant amounts of residual power, especially for observation periods of less than three years. Consequently the present upper bound on the energy density of gravitational waves Ωg <3 × 10-4 R Μs 2 , though already more stringent than any other available, is not as restrictive as had been previously estimated. The present limit is insufficient to exclude scenarios which use primordial cosmic strings for galaxy formation, but should improve rapidly with time. We construct for the first time, the sequences of stable neutron star (NS) models capable of explaining simultaneously, the glitch healing parameters, Q, of both the pulsars, the Crab (Q≥0.7) and the Vela (Q≤0.2), on the basis of starquake mechanism of glitch generation, whereas the conventional NS models cannot give such consistent explanation. Furthermore, our models also yield an upper bound on NS masses similar to those obtained in the literature for a variety of modern equations of state (EOSs) compatible with causality and dynamical stability. If the lower limit of the observational constraint of (i) Q≥0.7 for the Crab pulsar and (ii) the recent value of the moment of inertia for the Crab pulsar (evaluated on the basis of time-dependent acceleration model of the Crab Nebula), I Crab,45≥1.93 (where I 45=I/1045 g cm2), both are imposed together on our models, the models yield the value of matching density, E b =9.584×1014 g cm−3 at the core-envelope boundary. This value of matching density yields a model-independent upper bound on neutron star masses, M max≤2.22M , and the strong lower bounds on surface redshift z R ≃0.6232 and mass M≃2.11M for the Crab (Q≃0.7) and the strong upper bound on surface redshift z R ≃0.2016, mass M≃0.982M and the moment of inertia I Vela,45≃0.587 for the Vela (Q≃0.2) pulsar. However, for the observational constraint of the ‘central’ weighted mean value Q≈0.72, and I Crab,45>1.93, for the Crab pulsar, the minimum surface redshift and mass of the Crab pulsar are slightly increased to the values z R ≃0.655 and M≃2.149M respectively, whereas corresponding to the ‘central’ weighted mean value Q≈0.12 for the Vela pulsar, the maximum surface redshift, mass and the moment of inertia for the Vela pulsar are slightly decreased to the values z R ≃0.1645, M≃0.828M and I Vela,45≃0.459 respectively. These results set an upper and lower bound on the energy of a gravitationally redshifted electron-positron annihilation line in the range of about 0.309–0.315 MeV from the Crab and in the range of about 0.425–0.439 MeV from the Vela pulsar.  相似文献

The BL Lac-type object 3C 66A was observed at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory during the international project OJ-94. Observations were made over 10 nights from February through December 2003 at the Cassegrain focus of the 125-cm AZT-11 telescope with a photopolarimeter capable of simultaneous measurements in the UBVRI bands. In the course of our measurements the brightness of the object increased by more than 1 magnitude in all these bands. Its color indices varied and the degree of polarization decreased from ∼16% in February to ∼3% at the end of our observations. In December 2003 a rapid change in the position angle from 15° to 40° was noticed. The spectral energy distribution Fn is well described by a power law with a spectral index a (Fνν α . The increase in brightness was accompanied by a reduction in the spectral index. The most probable mechanism for the observed changes in the brightness, degree of polarization, and spectral index may be a decrease in the magnetic field strength or a change in its configuration owing to a increase in the chaotic component of the field. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 1, pp. 41–59 (February 2006).  相似文献

Slow magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) standing wave oscillations in hot coronal loops for both strong (i.e. τd/P∼ 1) and weak (i.e. τd/P≥ 2) damping are investigated taking account of viscosity, thermal conductivity and optically thin radiation. The individual effect of the dissipative terms is not sufficient to explain the observed damping. However, the combined effect of these dissipative terms is sufficient to explain the observed strong damping, as well as weak damping seen by SUMER. We find that, the ratio of decay time (τd) and period (P) of wave, i.e., τd/P (which defines the modes of damping, whether it is strong or weak) is density dependent. By varying density from 108 to 1010 cm−3 at a fixed temperature in the temperature range 6 – 10 MK, observed by SUMER, we get two sets of damping: one for which τ d/P∼ 1 corresponds to strong damping that occurs at lower density and another that occurs at higher density for which τd/P ≥ 2 corresponds to weak damping. Contrary to strong-damped oscillations, the effect of optically thin radiation provides some additional dissipation apart from thermal conductivity and viscosity in weak-damped oscillations. We have, therefore, derived a resultant dispersion relation including the effect of optically thin radiation. Solutions of this dispersion relation illustrate how damping time varies with physical parameters of loops in both strong and weak damping cases.  相似文献

We present analysis of flare process as "phase transition" phenomena caused by frustration of current percolation in turbulent current sheet. We show that numerous plasma instabilities in the sheet will form random resistors network with "bad resistors"-turbulent domains and "good resistors"-normal plasma domains. We show that current percolation in random inhomogeneous turbulent current sheet like to another percolated systems is able to produce phase transition with drastic change of global properties of system as whole (conductivity, heat-conductivity, elasticity,) on the threshold value of critical density of "bad" elements (p= p c ). Another property of solar flares, what may be understood on the base of percolation approach is observed universal power dependence of frequency of flares and microflares (elementary events-spikes) on their amplitude: N W W k . It may be explained as natural sequence of universal power dependence of clusters' masses in percolated systems on their sizes. The slope of resulted spectra is determined by the fractal dimension of clusters and depends on feedback between current propagation and turbulence generation. We show that percolation approach allow to explain phenomena of preflare bursts-precursors observed in radio and hard X-ray. It may be understood as results of pre-catastrophic lose of elasticity of system to small disturbance on the percolation threshold, with formation of short life nuclear of "new phase". In an earlier paper, based on simultaneous multifrequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), we reported the variation of pulsar dispersion measures (DMs) with frequency. A few different explanations are possible for such frequency dependence, and a possible candidate is the effect of pulse shape evolution on the DM estimation technique. In this paper we describe extensive simulations we have done to investigate the effect of pulse profile evolution on pulsar DM estimates. We find that it is only for asymmetric pulse shapes that the DM estimate is significantly affected due to profile evolution with frequency. Using multifrequency data sets from our earlier observations, we have carried out systematic analyses of PSR B0329+54 and PSR B1642−03. Both these pulsars have central core-dominated emission which does not show significant asymmetric profile evolution with frequency. Even so, we find that the estimated DM shows significant variation with frequency for these pulsars. We also report results from new, simultaneous multifrequency observations of PSR B1133+16 carried out using the GMRT in phased array mode. This pulsar has an asymmetric pulse profile with significant evolution with frequency. We show that in such a case, amplitude of the observed DM variations can be attributed to profile evolution with frequency. We suggest that genuine DM variations with frequency could arise due to propagation effects through the interstellar medium and/or the pulsar magnetosphere.  相似文献
