The atmospheric mass density of the upper atmosphere from the spherical Starlette satellite’s Precise Orbit Determination is first derived with Satellite Laser Ranging measurements at 815 to 1115 km during strong solar and geomagnetic activities. Starlette’s orbit is determined using the improved orbit determination techniques combining optimum parameters with a precise empirical drag application to a gravity field. MSIS-86 and NRLMSISE-00 atmospheric density models are compared with the Starlette drag-derived atmospheric density of the upper atmosphere. It is found that the variation in the Starlette’s drag coefficient above 800 km corresponds well with the level of geomagnetic activity. This represents that the satellite orbit is mainly perturbed by the Joule heating from geomagnetic activity at the upper atmosphere. This result concludes that MSIS empirical models strongly underestimate the mass density of the upper atmosphere as compared to the Starlette drag-derived atmospheric density during the geomagnetic storms. We suggest that the atmospheric density models should be analyzed with higher altitude acceleration data for a better understanding of long-term solar and geomagnetic effects.  相似文献

Air density at a height of 180–200 km from July 1967 to September 1969 has been determined from analysis of the high eccentricity orbit of satellite 1967-31A. The data show good correlation between sudden density increase and geomagnetic disturbance. The increases for disturbances of equal strength are approximately 40% greater during night-time than daytime hours. The day-night influence is also observed in the changes in density with changes in the solar flux index, F10. The 27-day density variation is predominant mainly during night-time, although the atmospheric response to F10 variations is quite variable regardless of local time. A semi-annual variation of approx. 40% is observed. Also found is a 25% diurnal variation for heights near 170–180 km, which is in good agreement with the CIRA 1972 atmosphere.  相似文献

A development of an analytical solution for the motion of an artificial Earth satellite subject to the combined effects of Earth gravity and air drag is presented. The atmospheric model takes into account a linear variation of the density scale height with altitude, the rotation and the oblateness of the atmosphere. The perturbation theory is based upon Lie transforms. The secular and long-periodic terms as well as the short-periodic effects are included in the theory which is valid for small to moderate eccentricities and for all values of the inclination.Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research  相似文献

The equations describing the disturbed motion of an artificial Earth satellite in the atmosphere are integrated by using a new variable instead of the true anomaly. The atmospheric flattening and rotation, the linear variation of the density scale height with the altitude, the symmetrical diurnal effect and the variation of its amplitude with the heigth are taken into account. Approximate formulae for the perturbations in all the orbital elements over a revolution of the satellite are given.  相似文献

Cosmos 316 (1969-108A) was launched on 23 December 1969 into an orbit with an initial perigee height of 154 km at an inclination of 49.5° to the equator. Being very massive, Cosmos 316 had a longer lifetime than any previous satellite with such a low initial perigee: it remained in orbit until 28 August 1970. Because of its interest for upper-atmosphere research, the satellite was intensively observed, and accurate orbits are being determined at RAE from all available observations. Using perigee heights from the RAE orbits so far computed, and decay rates from Spacetrack bulletins, 102 values of air density have been obtained, giving a detailed picture of the variations in density at heights near 150 km between 24 December 1969 and 28 August 1970. The three strongest geomagnetic storms, on 8 March, 21 April and 17 August 1970, are marked by sudden increases in density of at least 23, 15 and 24 per cent respectively. With values of density extending over eight months, it is possible for the first time to examine a complete cycle of the semi-annual variation at a height near 150 km: the values of density, when corrected to a fixed height, exhibit minima in mid January and early August; at the intervening maximum, in April, the density is 30 per cent higher than at the minima.  相似文献

An expression is derived for the solar radiation pressure disturbing function on an Earth satellite orbit which takes into account the variation of the solar radiation flux with distance from the Sun's centre and the absorption of radiation by the satellite. This expression is then expanded in terms of the Keplerian elements of the satellite and solar orbits using Kaula's method. The Kaula inclination functions are replaced by an equivalent set of modified Allan inclination functions. The resulting expression reduces to the form commonly used in solar radiation pressure perturbation studies (e.g. Aksnes, 1976), when certain terms are neglected. If, as happens quite often in practice, a satellite's orbit is in near-resonsnce with certain of these neglected terms, these near-resonant terms can cause changes in the satellite's orbital elements comparable to those produced by the largest term in Aksnes's expression. A new expression for the solar radiation pressure disturbing function expansion is suggested for use in future studies of satellite orbits perturbed by solar radiation pressure.  相似文献

Cosmos 359 rocket, 1970-65D, entered orbit on 22 August 1970, with an initial perigee height of 209 km and inclination 51·2°, and decayed on 6 October 1971. Using the values of perigee height from RAE orbits and decay rates from USAF Spacetrack bulletins, 146 values of air density have been calculated between August 1970 and September 1971, mainly at heights between 180 and 230 km.On ten occasions in 1971 when there were substantial geomagnetic disturbances there were sudden increases in density, the largest being about 32 per cent. When the density was corrected to a fixed height and allowance was made for the day-tonight variation and the effects of solar activity, the dominant feature was a semi-annual variation, with maxima in density centred at 6 November 1970 and 7 April 1971, and minima centred at 5 January and 28 July 1971. The maxima in density are nearly equal and exceed the minima by about 50 per cent.  相似文献

The orbit of Explorer 19 (1963-53A) has been determined at 60 epochs between February 1976 and October 1976 from over 3000 observations. Using values of the orbital decay rate corrected for the effects of solar radiation pressure, 58 values of air density at a height of 900 km have been evaluated. After correcting for solar and geomagnetic activity and seasonal-latitudinal and diurnal variations in the exospheric temperature, the residual variation exhibited modulations associated with the ‘winter helium bulge’.An examination of three different models of the helium variation has indicated a procedure, which combines distinct features of the CIRA (1972) and Jacchia (1977) model atmospheres, for determining the atmospheric drag effect on Explorer 19. It is proposed that this technique may be equally applicable to any satellite in near-polar orbit at an equivalent height.  相似文献

An empirical density formula is explored as a practical model for atmospheric variations and satellite drag analyses. Expanding neutral air density as a series of spherical harmonics and normalizing to a fixed height, an analytical expression for the rate of change of the mean motion is developed for an oblate atmosphere with density scale height varying linearly with altitude. A subset of the coefficients in the density expansion is determined by least-squares adjustment to the observed orbital decay rate of Intercosmos 13 rocket (1975-22B) for the period May 1975–December 1979. Comparisons against four thermospheric models are undertaken for the solar activity effect and the diurnal and semi-annual variations. Given the even spread of data and the increase in solar activity from low to moderate, the air density variation with solar activity is particularly well determined. The results support the “J77” model revealing a greater increase in density with the daily solar index than either the “MSIS” or “DTM” thermospheric models near the solar minimum. Analyses of the diurnal and semi-annual variations are less exact.  相似文献

The thickness of the peak of the ionosphere depends primarily on the temperature T n of the neutral gas, and corresponds approximately to an α-Chapman layer at a temperature of 0.87T n. The overall slab thickness, as given by Faraday rotation measurements, is then τ =0.22 n + 7km. Expansion of the topside ionosphere, and changes in the E-andFl-regions increase τ by about 20 km during the day in summer. Near solar minimum τ is increased by a lowering of the O +/H + transition height; if the neutral temperature T n is estimated, this height can be obtained from observed values of τ.Hourly values of slab thickness were determined over a period of 6 yr at 34°S and 42°S. Near solar maximum the night-time values were about 260 km in all seasons. The corresponding neutral temperatures agree with satellite drag values; they show a semiannual variation of 14 per cent and a seasonal change of 5 per cent. Daytime values of τ were about 230 km in winter and 320 km in summer, implying a seasonal change of 30 per cent in T n. Temperatures increase steadily throughout the day in all seasons, with a rapid post-sunset cooling in summer. Downwards movements produce a large peak in τ at 0600 hr in winter. A large upwards flux, equal to about 40 per cent of the maximum (limiting) value, reduces τ for several hours after sunrise in winter. The slab thickness increases near solar minimum showing a reduction of the O +/H + transition height to about 700 km in summer and 500 km in winter.  相似文献

Modeling the effects of atmospheric drag is one of the more important problems associated with the determination of the orbit of a near-earth satellite. Errors in the drag model can lead to significant errors in the determination and prediction of the satellite motion. The uncertainty in the drag acceleration can be attributed to three separate effects: (a) errors in the atmospheric density model, (b) errors in the ballistic coefficient, and (c) errors in the satellite relative velocity. In a number of contemporary satellite missions, the requirements for performing the orbit determination and predictions in near real-time has placed an emphasis on density model computation time as well as the model accuracy. In this investigation, a comparison is made of three contemporary atmospheric density models which are candidates for meeting the current orbit computation requirements. The models considered are the analytic Jacchia-Roberts model, the modified Harris-Priester model, and the USSR Cosmos satellite derived density model. The computational characteristics of each of the models are compared and a modification to the modified Harris-Priester model is proposed which improves its ability to represent the diurnal variation in the atmospheric density. This investigation was supported by the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center under contract NAS5-20946 and Contract NSG 5154.  相似文献

Variations in air density have been determined using the orbit of the satellite Cosmos 462, 1971-106A, which entered orbit on 3 December 1971 with an initial perigee near 230 km and inclination 65.75°, and decayed on 4 April 1975. Accurate orbits determined at 85 epochs give perigee height correct to about 200 m throughout the satellite's lifetime. Using these values of perigee height and orbital decay rates from NORAD elements, 604 values of air density at half a scale height above perigee have been evaluated. These densities have been compared with values from the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere 1972, taking account of variations due to solar activity and geomagnetic disturbances, and day-to-night variations, to reveal the residual variations in density at a series of standard heights, 245, 240, 232 and 213 km.The main residual variation is semi-annual, with maxima usually in April and October, and minima usually in January and July; but it is irregular in phase and shape. The amplitude of the semi-annual variation is remarkably constant from year to year between 1972 and 1975, and considerably greater than that given by CIRA 1972: the April/July density ratio is 1.68, not 1.32 as in CIRA; the October–November maxima are all lower than the April maxima, whereas CIRA gives the opposite; the July minima are 18% lower than the January minima, as opposed to 10% in CIRA.A standardized semi-annual density variation for the early 1970s is presented, with January minimum of 0.94, April maximum of 1.28, July minimum of 0.77 and October–November maximum of 1.22. In addition, three other recurrent variations are recognizable: in each year the density has a subsidiary minimum in May and maximum in June; there are low values in mid November and high values in late December.  相似文献

The effect of solar radiation pressure on the orbits of cylindrical satellites is considered. The cylinder is assumed to reflect radiation both specularly and diffusely. The resultant forces on a stationary cylindrical satellite are given. The evolution of the satellite's orbit is described for two particular modes of rotation. In both cases the satellites are assumed to be in circular Sun-synchronous orbits.  相似文献

We consider the effects of the absorption of solar XUV radiation by the Earth's atmosphere that were observed in the solar images obtained with the TEREK-K telescope onboard the Coronas-I satellite in May–June 1994 at low solar activity and with the SPIRIT instrumentation onboard the Coronas-F satellite in October–November 2001 at maximum solar activity. The solar images were recorded during the satellite occultation: in the 175- and 304-A spectral ranges onboard Coronas-I with the TEREK-K telescope and in the 175-, 304-, and 8.42-A ranges onboard Coronas-F with the SPIRIT instrumentation. Based on the XUV solar images obtained during atmospheric sounding, apart from the total absorption, we can determine the direction of the atmospheric density gradient and study the local absorption variations with altitude on spatial scales of less than 1 km. The described method can significantly supplement the data obtained in studies of the upper atmosphere by the methods of mass spectrometry, incoherent radar scattering, and the drag of orbital spacecraft.  相似文献

The satellite NOAA-B (1980-43A) was launched in May 1980 into an orbit with perigee height near 260 km and apogee height 1440 km, at an inclination of 92.2°.The lifetime was 11 months. The orbit has been determined at 40 epochs between October 1980 and May 1981 from about 3000 radar and optical observations. The average orbital accuracy, radial and cross-track, was about 100 m, with rather better accuracy in the final 14 days. The variation of orbital inclination has been analysed to determine two good values of atmospheric rotation rate, namely 1.10 ± 0.10 rev day?1 at 300 km (average local time) and 1.15 ± 0.06 rev day?1 at 225 km (evening). The effect of atmospheric rotation on the precession of the orbital plane of an actual satellite has never previously been detected; it is clearly apparent for 1980-43A in its last days and conforms to the expected theoretical change. The variation of perigee height has been analysed to determine ten values of atmospheric density scale height, for heights of 280–370 km. These values, accurate to about 3%, exceed by 15% the values indicated by the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere. Solar activity was higher in the years 1980–1981 than at any time since early 1958 and it appears that the CIRA model underestimates the density and density scale height at high levels of solar activity.  相似文献

Spatial variations of the atomic hydrogen Lyman-alpha airglow were observed at 550 km from the OSO-4 spacecraft. Near the subsolar position, the zenith, horizon and nadir emission rates were 27,50 and 35 kR, respectively, while near the antisolar position, the respective emission rates were 2·0, 2·7 and 1·2 kR on 27 October 1967. Analyses of these results shows that the mean vertical optical depth above satellite altitude is in the range 0·87–3·5 with 1·3 as the preferred value. Atomic hyrdogen undergoes a diurnal density variation of the order of a factor of 1·7 with a maximum in the early morning and a minimum in the afternoon. A hydrogen altitude profile corresponding to 1100 K exospheric temperature is adequate to explain the data. Temporal variations of the airglow observed from OGO-4 show that the solar line-center Lyman-alpha flux should typically increase by 50 per cent for an increase in Zurich sunspot count from 30 to 210.  相似文献

A new non-singular analytical theory for the motion of near-Earth satellite orbits with the air drag effect is developed in terms of uniformly regular KS canonical elements. Diurnally varying oblate atmosphere is considered with variation in density scale height dependent on altitude. The series expansion method is utilized to generate the analytical solutions and terms up to fourth-order terms in eccentricity and c (a small parameter dependent on the flattening of the atmosphere) are retained. Only two of the nine equations are solved analytically to compute the state vector and change in energy at the end of each revolution, due to symmetry in the equations of motion. The important drag perturbed orbital parameters: semi-major axis and eccentricity are obtained up to 500 revolutions, with the present analytical theory and by numerical integration over a wide range of perigee height, eccentricity and inclination. The differences between the two are found to be very less. A comparison between the theories generated with terms up to third- and fourth-order terms in c and e shows an improvement in the computation of the orbital parameters semi-major axis and eccentricity, up to 9%. The theory can be effectively used for the re-entry of the near-Earth objects, which mainly decay due to atmospheric drag.  相似文献

The semimajor axis of the Lageos satellite's orbit is decreasing secularly at the rate of 1.1 mm day–1. Ten possible mechanisms are investigated to discover which one (s), if any, might be causing the orbit to decay. Six of the mechanisms, resonance with the Earth's gravitational field, gravitational radiation, the Poynting-Robertson effect, transfer of spin angular momentum to the orbital angular momentum, drag from near-earth dust, and atmospheric drag by neutral hydrogen are ruled out because they are too small or require unacceptable assumptions to account for the observed rate of decay. Three other mechanisms, the Yarkovsky effect, the Schach effect, and terrestrial radiation pressure give perturbations whose characteristic signatures do not agree with the observed secular decrease (terrestrial radiation pressure appears to be too small in any case); hence they are also ruled out. Charged particle drag with the ions at Lageos's altitude is probably the principal cause of the orbital decay. An estimate of charged particle drag based upon laboratory experiments and satellite measurements of ion number densities accounts for 60 percent of the observed rate of decrease in the semimajor axis, assuming a satellite potential of –1V. This figure is in good agreement with other estimates based on charge drag theory. A satellite potential of –1.5V will explain the entire decay rate. Atmospheric drag from neutral hydrogen appears to be the next largest effect, explaining about 10 percent of the observed orbital decay rate.  相似文献

655 visual observations of 1972-25G, Molniya 1V Rocket, were made when its perigee height was below 130 km, and have been used to determine its orbit at 17 epochs between 5 November 1973 and 24 February 1974 and obtain almost daily values of its rate of decay. These give 52 values of atmospheric density with a relative accuracy of 1 % at a height of 128 km in latitudes 55–65°S. Day-to-day variations correlated with geomagnetic activity of up to 10% are found, plus an irregular semi-annual variation of amplitude 10%. The decrease in inclination has been measured accurately enough to enable the mean atmospheric rotation rate to be determined over the same time-span.  相似文献

The satellite 1970-114F, the final-stage rocket of the Molniya 1S communications satellite, decayed in the atmosphere on 3 March 1973. During the last 20 days of its life the orbit suffered exceptionally rapid decay, with the apogee height decreasing from 7000 to 1000 km while the perigee height remained near 110 km. About 650 observations, made by visual observers in Britain and by U.S. Navy sensors, have been used with the PROP6 orbit refinement program to determine orbits at 14 epochs. Although the decay rate was more than ten times greater than in any previous orbit determination with PROP, good orbits were obtained, the standard deviation in inclination being less than 0.002° on eight orbits. The combination of high drag and good accuracy allows three techniques in orbital analysis to be successfully applied for the first time. Since zonal winds have little effect on the orbit, the changes in inclination are analysed to determine meridional winds near perigee, at heights of 110–120 km, latitudes of 63–65°S, and 6–12 hr LT. The changes in right ascension of the node are also successfully analysed for the same purpose. The two methods agree in indicating a south-to-north wind of 40 ± 30 m/sec from 11 to 21 February, a geomagnetically quiet period, and a south-to-north wind averaging 150 ± 30 m/sec from 22 February to 3 March, a geomagnetically disturbed period. Thirdly, the changes in the argument of perigee are analysed to determine atmospheric oblateness, which is found to be equal to the Earth's oblateness, to within ±20%. Lastly, the drag coefficient in transition flow is evaluated and found to be 0.85 ± 0.20.  相似文献
